The Ellinwood Eagles volleyball squad is one of the best in Kansas history. An undefeated 47-0 season that ended in a state championship trophy put the small town in a state-wide spotlight, but, the Lady Eagles aren’t done yet.
Returning all but two players from last year’s squad, the Eagles want to run it back. Appearing on 1590 KVGB and 95.5 FM's Sports Day program, Senior Alivia Bachman and junior Metta Maxwell said that winning once was great, but they want that feeling again.
"We've been doing this for a very long time." Bachman said. "So we have a lot of emotion and a just time into this sport. We've never settled. We're never going to settle. So that's why we're ready to come back and do it again. It felt amazing. We finally got the reward. But it's like. I wanna do that again. I want to double that emotion."
"Definitely what she said on how we know how it feels, we want it, and we know how to do it." Agreed Maxwell. "So that definitely helps. We try to make our practices just as hard as how it was (last year), so if we succeed in practice, we're going to succeed in the season."
Senior Bennett Jacobs talked about the younger girls on the team, who might not be on the varsity squad, but do their part in making the first team better in those tough practices.
"We have a JV team that works us really hard. And we work on these hard, pressure-like drills, and they hit the ball into spots that we never thought could be hit. They're another varsity team that's challenging us to be better than we were before."
Ellinwood begins their title defense on Thursday September, as they host Beloit.
