(AP) — Pinch-hitter Edmundo Sosa hit his first career grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning, and the Philadelphia Phillies roared back for a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Sosa connected just two batters after Wade Meckler reached deep into the right field stands to rob Bryson Stott of a three-run homer. Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola is heading to Liverpool in one of the big-money signings of the summer transfer window. A person with knowledge of the transaction confirms to The Associated Press that the clubs have agreed to a deal worth 123 million pounds ($166 million) for Barcola. The person has confirmed the deal on the condition of anonymity because the details have not been made public. Neither Liverpool nor PSG have made any official comment about the transfer. The deal will see Liverpool paying 106 million pounds ($143 million) for the France international and up to an additional 17 million pounds ($23 million) in potential add-ons.
NYON, Switzerland (AP) — Record 15-time European champion Real Madrid will start the league phase of the Champions League on September 8 when it hosts Inter Milan. Match dates for each of the 36 teams’ eight-game schedules were published Saturday by UEFA, two days after the draw in Monaco. In two early starts on the opening Tuesday, Club Brugge will host Aston Villa and AEK Athens will welcome Austria newcomer LASK. On September 9 defending champion Paris Saint-Germain will host Slovan Bratislava, which is coached by Yaya Touré who's the first African leading a team at this stage of the competition. Debut-making Sabah of Azerbaijan will start at Manchester United on September 10. Manchester City will host PSG on October 14.
DENVER (AP) — Cale Makar and the Colorado Avalanche agreed to a $163.2 million, eight-year extension on Friday that will make him the highest paid player in league history. The terms of the deal were confirmed by his agency, Bartlett Hockey. Makar’s extension is set to be the the richest in NHL history, surpassing eight-year, $136 million extension signed by Minnesota forward Kirill Kaprizov last September. Makar’s deal runs through the 2034-35 season. The 27-year-old Makar is coming off a season in which he had 20 goals and 59 assists. He finished second to Zach Werenski of Columbus in the Norris Trophy voting, an award that goes to the league’s top defenseman. Makar has won the award twice over his career.
LONDON (AP) — Formula 1 defending world champion Lando Norris has extended his contract with McLaren until at least the end of 2030. The team announced the deal on Saturday and said it includes a multi-year option to commit beyond that date. Financial terms weren't disclosed. Norris claimed McLaren’s first drivers’ title last year since Lewis Hamilton's victory in 2008. Norris expressed his commitment to McLaren, calling it his home and emphasizing his desire to keep winning championships with the team.
DETROIT (AP) — Tarik Skubal shed some tears, walking on a field that used to be his home turf as the team that traded him away paid tribute to the two-time Cy Young Award winner. Skubal was welcomed with cheers and a smattering of boos in his return to Detroit, pitching for the first time against the middling franchise that traded him to the two-time defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur says there are no plans for the team to release Josh Jacobs as the three-time Pro Bowl running back faces two misdemeanor charges stemming from what police have described as a physical confrontation with his girlfriend. LaFleur said that “I fully anticipate him being a member of our team.” LaFleur said he couldn't comment on Jacobs' potential availablity for the Packers' Sept. 13 season opener at Minnesota. The Brown County (Wisconsin) District Attorney’s office filed misdemeanor charges of battery and criminal damage to property against Jacobs on Thursday
