The wins don't have to be pretty this time of the year. The madness got underway a few days early as the Great Bend boys played host to a Bishop Carroll team with just seven wins on the season in Tuesday's Class 5A playoff opener at Great Bend High School. Sophomores Daxton Minton and Ian Premer made big plays in the final seconds to secure a 54-51 win.

"The scouting report, they were all over," said Panther sophomore Jacob Hall, who scored 16 points in the win. "They're all shooters." 

The biggest shooter of the night proved to be Golden Eagle senior John Hauserman, who averaged just 11 points in his first 20 games of the season. He made four of his six 3-point attempts in the fourth quarter, including one to tie the game at 51 with 1:28 remaining.

Hauserman had made another three just 30 seconds earlier. Hall answered with a pass to Premer for an old-fashioned 3-point play and 51-48 Great Bend lead. The teams traded quick turnovers after Hauserman's final basket, and the Golden Eagles appeared content to run the final 57 seconds off the clock in search of a game-winning shot.

Enter Minton. Playing with four fouls, Minton picked Hauserman's pocket near the midcourt stripe. Minton missed his ensuing layup with Hauserman trailing, but Premer was there to clean it up with just 16 ticks left. The Panther pulled back ahead 53-51.

Minton's fifth foul put Hauserman on the free throw line with 9.8 seconds to play. After a delay, the team foul count was corrected to four Panther fouls, forcing a Golden Eagle inbounds play instead. Hall took a charge on the play to get the ball back to Great Bend. After a foul, Premer and headed to the other end to shoot free throws with 7.6 seconds remaining. He missed his first and made the second to bump the Panther lead to 54-51. Hauserman put up an off-balance, line-drive 3-point attempt to tie the game that rimmed off as the buzzer sounded.

Senior Mikey Brand, Bishop Carroll's leading scorer at 17 points a night, missed six game this season but came out firing with 11 points in the first quarter. Panther senior Carter Coombs provided the highlight of the opening frame with a behind-the-back pass into traffic to Hall, but Great Bend trailed 15-11 after one.

Brand picked up his 13th points of the night early in the second to extend the Bishop Carroll lead to 19-11. Premer got the crowd back into the game with his first dunk, and his second nearly four minutes later tied the score at 23. Coombs picked up another assist to senior Maddox Spray with three seconds left in the half to give the Panthers a 28-26 edge heading into the break.

Hall and senior Parker Dicks each hit threes in the third quarter, and Coombs dropped another assist to Premer for a 33-28 Panther lead. After scoring just four points in the first half, Hauserman warmed to a 7-point third quarter but Great Bend clung to a 40-37 lead with a quarter to play.

Brand did not score in the second half, finishing with 13 points for the Golden Eagles. Hauserman scored 14 of his game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter and added six rebounds.

Hall did a little of everything with 10 points in the first half, including a 4-of-5 effort from the charity stripe. With a pair of big threes in the second half, he finished with 16 points.

"As long as we kept the ball moving, everything was opening up if we used ball fakes," he said. "It was just all there."

Premer led the Panthers with 18 points, Spray scored 11 points, Coombs finished with six points, and Dicks had the one 3-pointer for his total.

The Panthers move their win streak to a season-best seven games. Great Bend (16-5) will play either Hutchinson or Goddard-Eisenhower Friday at Great Bend High School.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — BYU coach Mark Pope had just been given a technical foul late in the game, and the volume was quickly ramping up inside Allen Fieldhouse, where so many opponents over the years have wilted down the stretch against mighty Kansas.

Pope walked back to his huddle and realized something special about his players.

“They were the ones composed,” he said. “They were like, ‘Hey, we’re OK. Let's keep working.' And they did.”

Led by 18 points apiece from unflappable Dallin Hall and Jaxson Robinson, the Cougars wiped away a 12-point deficit and then held on for a 76-68 victory Tuesday night, ending the seventh-ranked Jayhawks' 19-game home winning streak.

“All of us are lifelong college basketball fans,” Pope said, “and this arena, this team, this coach, these players — you know, it's an all-time mecca. I think that's what makes this special. We talk about faith in our program, and certainly it is an important part of our university, and watching our guys' faith in each other tonight and faith in the process was special to watch.”

The Cougars (20-8, 8-7 Big 12) trailed 58-57 with 4:50 to go when Hall made two free throws for their first lead. A few minutes later, Noah Waterman hit a 3 to give BYU a 66-63 lead. And when Hunter Dickinson answered with a 3 for Kansas, Robinson hit two free throws and Hall made another 3 to send the Cougars to a win in their first trip to the Phog since 1971.

"They play hard and they challenged us on every front," Hall said, "but we responded and executed our game plan."

Dickinson had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Jayhawks (21-7, 9-6), who were just 3 of 15 from 3-point range and 19 for 31 at the foul line. Dajuan Harris Jr. added 12 points, KJ Adams Jr. scored 11 and Johnny Furphy finished with 10.

BYU won despite heavy foul trouble in part by going 13 of 34 from behind the 3-point arc.

“We played pitifully tonight, but when I say we played pitifully, I don't want to take something away from BYU,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “BYU was better than us. After we go up 12, the second half — they controlled it. We hoped to score. They actually ran offense to score. So give them credit. They caused us to look bad.”

Already playing without Kevin McCullar Jr., who missed his fifth game with a bruised knee, the Jayhawks experienced another scare when Nick Timberlake landed hard after going up for a rebound early in the game. The thud echoed through the fieldhouse, and Timberlake spent a couple of minutes in the locker room before eventually returning to the game.

Foul trouble hit BYU in the second half, when Hall picked up his fourth with 17:39 to go and Trevin Knell got his fourth — after a double-technical with Dickinson — just minutes later. But the Jayhawks were unable to take advantage at the offensive end, and that allowed the Cougars to stay within striking distance.

That's when Pope got called for his technical foul and the entire complexion of the game changed.

The poised Cougars suddenly began to rain 3-pointers, erasing a 56-50 deficit and taking their first lead at 59-58 on two free throws by Hall with 4:50 to play. Hall added two 3s of his own over the next few minutes, including one from the top of the key that gave the Big 12 newcomers a 71-66 lead with 1:31 remaining.

The Cougars were able to hold on the rest of the way for another signature win in their first season in the league.

“I've never seen an atmosphere quite like this,” Pope said afterward. “We're just really grateful we had an opportunity to come compete here. This is one of the meccas and we're just really fortunate to come away with a win.”

BYU returns home to play TCU on Saturday night.

BYU ends No. 7 Kansas' 19-game home win streak, 76-68

The Barton Community College baseball team got back to their winning ways Tuesday afternoon picking up a pair of run-rule victories over the junior varsity squad of Kansas Wesleyan University, 16-2 and 13-3 at Lawson-Biggs Field.

The Cougars scored in each of their four at-bats in the opener securing a 16-2 victory, before getting four shutout innings from Ethan Minaker in the nightcap while cruising to a five run first inning and doubleheader sweep.

Snapping its' three-game skid, Barton improves to 8-4 on the season while the losses drop the Coyotes JV squad to 4-2 overall.

In the midst of a seven game homestand, the Cougars will open a three-game weekend series against North Iowa Area Community College Friday with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader before concluding the series with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch on Saturday.

Four Cougars drove in three or more runs in the twinbill led by Cesar Gomez four while Cooper Tabor, Grant Nottlemann, and Robby Bolin each added a trio of RBIs.

L.J. Cryer scored 22 points, J’Wan Roberts added 15 and top-ranked
Houston won its sixth straight game by beating Cincinnati 67-59. One
day after ascending to No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the first time this
season, the Cougars extended their conference lead to 1 1/2 games
over Iowa State. They've won 21 consecutive home games, the longest
active streak in the nation. Cryer had 15 points in the first half
and Houston led 26-17 at the break. Emanuel Sharp scored 11 points
and Jamal Shead finished with nine points and 11 assists for the
Cougars. Viktor Lakhin and Simas Lukosius each scored 11 for
Cincinnati, which has lost five of six. The Bearcats went 5 of 19 on
3s.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP)
— Dylan Disu scored 21 points, Max Abmas added 18 and Texas rode a
big first half to a 81-69 victory over Texas Tech on Tuesday night in
a game that included a significant delay after fans threw objects
onto the floor. Midway through the second half Texas’ Brock
Cunningham delivered a hard check to Darrion Williams, knocking the
Red Raiders player out of bounds, resulting in Cunningham's ejection.
While officials were reviewing the play, objects including water
bottles were thrown onto the floor and again after Texas Tech was
given a technical for the fans' behavior. Pop Isaacs led Tech with 17
points.

Four former or suspended Iowa State athletes are asking a judge to
throw out evidence in a state sports wagering investigation they say
was gathered illegally and to dismiss all charges against them.
Attorneys for former football players Isaiah Lee, Jirehl Brock and
Enyi Uwazurike and suspended wrestler Paniro Johnson on Tuesday filed
the motion to suppress in Story County. The four are among about two
dozen Iowa State and Iowa athletes criminally charged. They each face
a felony charge of identity theft and an aggravated misdemeanor
charge of tampering with records. The Iowa Department of Public

since Peyton Manning's retirement in 2016. They've churned through 13
starting quarterbacks since then. Wilson was believed to be the
answer but he's won just 11 of 30 starts and was benched for Jarrett
Stidham in December.

— Shohei Ohtani needed just three exhibition at-bats to show what a
$700 million man can do for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Japanese
star hit a two-run homer in his first game wearing Dodger blue,
working a full count in the fifth inning before blasting an opposite
field homer off righty Dominic Leone that just cleared the left-field
wall. Ohtani was hitless in his first two plate appearances, striking
out on four pitches in the first inning before hitting a hard
grounder into a double play in the third.

CARSON, Calif. (AP)
— The U.S. national team has fought for years to raise the level of
women’s soccer across the globe, but that doesn’t make its
inevitable losses to teams it once dominated any easier. The U.S.
fell 2-0 to Mexico at the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup. The loss was
only the second time Mexico has beaten the U.S. The only other Mexico
victory in the 43-game series was in 2010, a 2-1 win at a World Cup
qualifying match. Coming as it did after some difficult times for the
U.S. team, the most recent loss was inevitably going to raise
questions.

onto the floor. Midway through the second half Texas’ Brock
Cunningham delivered a hard check to Darrion Williams, knocking the
Red Raiders player out of bounds, resulting in Cunningham's ejection.
While officials were reviewing the play, objects including water
bottles were thrown onto the floor and again after Texas Tech was
given a technical for the fans' behavior. Pop Isaacs led Tech with 17

Four former or suspended Iowa State athletes are asking a judge to
throw out evidence in a state sports wagering investigation they say

the motion to suppress in Story County. The four are among about two

It's the first time since the Feb. 14 shooting that killed Lisa Lopez-Galvan and left 22 injured that anyone from the organization spoke publicly about the incident.

“I want to share my condolences for the Galvan and Lopez family for their loss of Lisa, and for the people of Kansas City,” Reid said as he opened his news conference at the NFL's annual scouting combine. "She was a personality there, and a very good human being, first of all. We’ll all miss her, as I know her family will.”

Two people, Dominic M. Miller and Lyndell Mays, have been charged with second-degree murder.

But Reid also used the league's second-biggest offseason stage to suggest how tragedies such as the one that rocked Kansas City can be avoided.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Tylor Perry scored 29 points and made six 3-pointers, Cam Carter added 19 points and Kansas State let a 25-point lead slip away before beating West Virginia 94-90 in overtime on Monday night.

Kansas State (17-11, 7-8 Big 12 Conference) set an NCAA single-season record with its seventh overtime victory, extending Jerome Tang’s mark to 12-0 in his two seasons as coach. West Virginia (9-19, 6-9) remains winless on the road this season, going 0 for 8.

Kansas State built a six-point lead, 87-81, in overtime before RaeQuan Battle made West Virginia's first field goal of extra time with 1:48 left. Battle made another 3-pointer with 34 seconds left to get within 89-88.

Kansas State dribbled down the clock before Perry was fouled and made two free throws for a 91-88 lead with 15.4 seconds left. The Wildcats elected to foul before West Virginia could attempt a tying 3-pointer. Kerr Kriisa made two free throws with 12.3 to get within 91-90.

Perry made two free throws with 8.8 seconds left for a 93-90 lead. Battle was long on a 3-pointer at the other end and Kansas State got the ball back after an official review. Carter sealed it with a free throw.

Will McNair Jr. and Arthur Kaluma each added 13 points for Kansas State. The Wildcats entered making just 30.7% of their 3-point attempts and finished 15 of 31 (48.4%) against the Mountaineers.

Battle scored 28 points and made six 3-pointers, and Kriisa added 25 points and five 3-pointers for West Virginia. Jesse Edwards, averaging 14.6 points per game, was held to five points on 1-of-9 shooting.

Kansas State led 48-26 at halftime after making 11 of 19 from 3-point range, while West Virginia was just 11 of 33 overall. The Wildcats led by as many as 25 points, 66-41, in the second half.

Kriisa made his second 3-pointer during a 10-0 run with 2:13 left in regulation to give West Virginia a lead, 77-74, for the first time since it was 11-10. He added two free throws to make it 79-75.

McNair grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back to get Kansas State within 79-77. After Edwards missed two straight free throws for West Virginia, Perry was fouled on a baseline drive before making two at the stripe to tie it at 79-all with 15.5 left. Kriisa's contested jumper at the buzzer didn't hit the rim and Edwards wasn't able to get another shot off before the buzzer.

Kansas State completed the season sweep of West Virginia for the first time since 2019.

Kansas State plays at Cincinnati on Saturday. West Virginia returns home to play Texas Tech on Saturday.

Hernández. The 29-year-old Margot just joined the Dodgers two months

collection, amounting to more than 10,000 cards. The auctioneer says
the case could include 25 or more highly coveted Wayne Gretzky rookie
cards. A man in Regina, Saskatchewan, had kept the case in a packed
storage room. The auctioneer says the longtime collector asked to
remain anonymous.

For the first time since 2002, the Barton Community College men's basketball team is now the nation's top ranked team as the Cougars have moved up a spot in the latest and final regular season NJCAA Division I poll.

Victors of 17 straight, Barton is 26-1 on the season in replacing South Plains College as the Texans were knocked from the unbeaten Thursday 76-69 at Howard College in slipping to 26-1.

Most recently the Cougars survived its own threat to derail its win streak by surviving 70-68 as Mozae Downing-Rivers' short jumper with 2.3 seconds provided the final difference maker hosting Garden City Community College.

Barton received ten of the fourteen first place votes in the poll for 346 points with South Plains garnering the other four top spot votes in sliding to second with 340 points. A distant third with 314 points was the one spot move up by Triton College followed by the three spot climb of Salt Lake Community College (307 points) and Vincennes University (295 points). Joining South Plains in taking a hit last week, Daytona State College fell from third to seventh while Mineral Area College also dropped out of the top five to the eighth spot of the poll.

Fellow Region VI members Cowley College, who has the lone victory over Barton this season, moved up one spot to 11th with Saturday's home opponent Hutchinson Community College staying steady at No. 15 while Butler Community College falls out of the poll.

Two games up with three to play in the conference standings at 20-1, Barton has one regular season home contest left in between a pair of road contests in the hunt for its first conference title since the 2008-09 season.

The Cougars' quest with the bullseye attached begins on Wednesday in a 7:30 p.m. tip at Dodge City Community College, a contest if victorious would secure at least a share of the title.

Looming next is Saturday's 7:30 p.m. hosting of the Blue Dragons on "Pink Out Night" with sophomore recognition taking place in between the women's and men's contests.

Hutchinson stays No. 1 in NJCAA Women's Poll

Now it’s Houston’s turn at the top of The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll. The Cougars moved to No. 1 for the first time this season in Monday’s latest poll. They climbed one spot to end reigning national champion Connecticut’s six-week stay there. Houston became the fifth team to hold the top spot this season after an overtime win at Baylor. Purdue was No. 2 while UConn fell to third. The poll's new additions included South Florida at No. 25 for that program's first-ever appearance. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Freshman S'Mya Nichols scored 22 points to lead Kansas to a 58-55 win over No. 10 Kansas State on Sunday.

Taiyanna Jackson added 11 points and Holly Kersgieter scored 10 for Kansas (16-11, 9-7 Big 12), which closed out the victory with an 11-4 run and improved to 6-1 in its last seven games.

“This is the best memory I have of Allen Fieldhouse,” Kersgieter, a super senior, said of her final game against rival Kansas State. “Whether you’re playing for a championship, or whatever, having a home rivalry game against the top-10 team at a crucial moment in the season, I thought to myself, ‘This is the best moment.’”

Kansas coach Brandon Schneider, who is in his ninth season at Kansas, agreed.

“Obviously winning the NIT championship was great last year, but this team is fighting for an NCAA Tournament berth," he said. "I think a top-10 win late in the year is one of those that you add to the resume.”

Ayoka Lee scored 14 points and Taryn Sides added 11 for Kansas State (23-5, 12-4), which has gone 3-4 in its last seven games.

“I thought Kansas outplayed us down the stretch in a tight ballgame all the way around,” Kansas State coach Jeff Mittie said. “They executed their stuff better than we did. They did a real good job of disrupting some things for us. And we didn’t play with as much poise as we needed to play with.”

Mittie said Lee is still working her way back into game shape after missing multiple games with injuries.

“She hasn’t had a lot of reps,” he said. “It wasn’t the type of injury that you’re able to get a lot of reps on. I think it’s going to take her a couple of weeks to get the feel around the rim.”

Kansas State held a 51-47 advantage before Kansas started its closing run. Nichols used a spin move for an open layup to tie the game at 51 with 3:31 left.

“We knew exactly what we were getting from her as a player, in terms of her skill level and our versatility,” Schneider said of his freshman star. “But until you start working with the player, you see the poise and composure and that side of it. I think she is far beyond her years of experience.”

Kersgieter hit a mid-range jumper to give Kansas the lead with 2:43 remaining. After Serena Sundell hit one of two free throws, Nichols scored to make it a three-point game, 55-52, with 2:03 remaining.

Sundell missed a contested layup on the next possession, and Kersgieter hit two free throws to give Kansas a five-point lead and added another to push the advantage to six points at 58-52 with 24.8 seconds left.

Sides hit a 3-pointer that pulled the Wildcats within 58-55, but her 3-point try at the buzzer bounced off the rim.

“I was thinking, ‘Stay out,’” Schneider said with a laugh. “It's like rooting against a putt.”

The third quarter ended with the Wildcats clinging to a 43-42 lead after the teams traded buckets most of the period. Nichols scored seven of Kansas' 14 points in the third quarter.

Kansas State: The Wildcats will be tough to stop once Ayoka Lee is at full strength. Lee is working into shape after missing multiple games due to injury.

Miami’s Jimmy Butler and New Orleans’ Naji Marshall have both
been suspended for one game for instigating an on-court altercation
that happened during the Heat-Pelicans game on Friday night. Miami’s
Thomas Bryant and New Orleans’ Jose Alvarado were both handed
three-game suspensions for fighting and leaving the bench area.
Miami’s Nikola Jovic also got a one-game suspension for leaving the

video surfaced Sunday that appeared to show 2015 NFL Most Valuable
Player Cam Newton being involved in a scuffle at a 7-on-7 youth

Daniel Suarez edged Ryan Blaney and Kyle Busch in a three-wide finish

(AP) — Jake Knapp has won the Mexico Open, and it wasn't easy until
the end. Knapp had a four-shot lead going into the final round. That
was cut in half in three holes and gone after seven holes. But the
29-year-old rookie from UCLA never lost the lead. He hit only two
fairways and leaned on a short game that carried him to a 71. He won
by two shots over Sami Valimaki. The victory gives Knapp a spot in
the Masters and the PGA Championship. He also gets into the remaining

Cody Bellinger is going back to the Chicago Cubs, agreeing to an $80
million, three-year contract, according to a person familiar with the
deal. The slugger can opt out of the deal after each of the first two
years. The person confirmed the agreement to The Associated Press on
condition of anonymity because it was pending a physical. Bellinger’s
return would be a big win for the Cubs, who waited into spring
training as the center fielder explored his options in free agency.
