STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Javian McCollum’s dramatic 3-pointer as time expired in overtime gave Oklahoma an 84-82 victory over Oklahoma State, sending the basketball version of Bedlam out with a bang. WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Duke star big man Kyle Filipowski was hobbled after a collision with a fan rushing onto the court to celebrate Wake Forest's win against the eighth-ranked Blue Devils. The 7-footer had ice on his right knee when talking to reporters afterward. Filipowski told reporters it was “ridiculous” that more wasn't done to slow the court-storming fans to allow the Blue Devils to get off the court. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Major League Baseball’s move to slice two seconds off the pitch clock with runners on base is too much, too soon, according to the head of the players’ union. MLBPA executive director Tony Clark said on Saturday that pitchers around the league are concerned about injuries now that the pitch clock is moving from 20 seconds to 18 seconds with men on base in 2024. The pitch clock will stay at 15 seconds with no one on base. MLB introduced a new rules package last season that radically cut game times by about 25 minutes, which was the quickest games have been played since 1984. MLB still wants to shave a few more minutes off game times, cutting the pitch clock even more for the upcoming season.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Eric Bieniemy is expected to become UCLA’s associate head coach and offensive coordinator, two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because details of the contract are still being worked out. Bieniemy, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs, spent the past season in Washington. He wasn’t retained by new Commanders coach Dan Quinn, who replaced Ron Rivera. Bieniemy joins DeShaun Foster’s staff at UCLA. Foster took over after Chip Kelly left to become the offensive coordinator at Ohio State.

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) — NASCAR drivers are still making adjustments in the third year of Atlanta Motor Speedway's reconfigured track with higher banks. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson scored 20 points, KJ Adams had 16 and No. 9 Kansas beat Texas 86-67 on Saturday night.

All five Kansas starters scored in double figures as Johnny Furphy contributed 16, Dajuan Harris had 14 and Nicolas Timberlake scored 13.

“Games like this where we come out really good and stay even keeled are nice," Adams said. "It’s always a good time beating my hometown team, it’s definitely fun, but hopefully we get to play them again.”

Kansas (21-6, 9-5 Big 12) separated midway through the first half with a 12-0 run to take a 28-15 lead which was highlighted by two jams. Furphy back cut on a defender and threw it down between two Longhorns which started the run.

Two minutes later, Timberlake leaped over Dylan Disu for an alley-oop slam from Harris on a two-on-one fast break. The crowd erupted and Kansas used that momentum to distance themselves and take a 45-25 lead at halftime.

“He was really good today and hit some big shots and that alley-oop was massive," Furphy said about Timberlake.

The Jayhawks outscored Texas 52-34 in the paint, which led to Kansas shooting 32 of 52 or 62% from the field. Texas shot 26 of 62 or 42% from the field.

“We played great in the first half, we were terrific, bench was good and starters were great," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "When the ball moves like that and we guard like that, you’ll be in a favorable position, especially when you’re at home.”

Texas (17-10, 6-8) was led by Tyrese Hunter and Dillon Mitchell with 12 points each.

“I give Kansas a lot of credit tonight because they played at a very elite level," Texas coach Rodney Terry said. "They were ready to play and I didn’t do a great job of having my guys ready to play as far as what it takes to play at a place like this.”

The Jayhawks' Kevin McCullar Jr. missed the game due to a lingering knee injury. Before the game, Self said McCullar is considered “week to week.” He has missed four Big 12 games this season.

“My concern is if he will play again this season,” Self said. “I'd like to have him for the postseason. I'm hoping we have him back, but I'm not thinking it's going to be tomorrow or Monday.”

Texas: Poor shooting early haunted the Longhorns and they are now in a tie for ninth in the Big 12.

Kansas: Several dunks and a behind-the-back pass for a layup by Elmarko Jackson showcased an impressive first half from the Jayhawks. They showed that when they are hitting on all cylinders, they are as good as anyone in the country.

Texas: Travels to No. 23 Texas Tech on Tuesday night.

The Wildcats started the second half with a run to retake a double-digit lead. They built a 61-47 advantage with 12:47 left in the game and extended their lead to as many as 16 points before BYU tried to rally late.

Kansas State scored the first eight points of the game and led 12-2 with 16:44 left in the first half. Kansas State extended its lead to 16-4 before BYU used a 10-0 run to close the gap.

The Cougars managed to tie the game at 28 with 6:35 left in the half, but never took a lead. The Wildcats led 42-38 at the break, helped by Kaluma's 16 points and six rebounds. Perry added 10 points.

BYU was slowed by 40.8% (29 for 71) shooting overall, including 20% (6 for 30) from 3-point distance.

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — MLB's new uniform reveal hasn't gone very well. Now some of the rampant criticism has moved below the belt.

Major League Baseball Players Association deputy executive director Bruce Meyer confirmed on Thursday that the organization is relaying concerns from players to MLB about the new pants, which are somewhat see-through. The complaints — first reported by ESPN — are part of broader scorn for the new uniforms, which are designed by Nike and manufactured by Fanatics.

“I know everyone hates them,” Phillies shortstop Trea Turner said last week. “We all liked what we had. We understand business, but I think everyone wanted to keep it the same way, for the most part, with some tweaks here or there.”

MLB officials say the new uniforms improve mobility by providing 25% more stretch and also will dry 28% faster. The lettering, sleeve emblems and numbering are less bulky in an attempt to make uniforms more breathable and comfortable.

Commissioner Rob Manfred previously said he expects criticism to fade, but that was before the below-the-belt complaints.

Some MLB players don't know if they like the new pants — because they don't have them yet. The San Diego Padres played their first spring training game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday in last year's pants.

Veteran pitcher Joe Musgrove wasn't sure when the Padres were supposed to get their new pants.

“Hopefully by Opening Day,” Musgrove said. “We tried stuff on last year, we tried stuff on again in spring, but the samples they gave us, they didn't have the proper length for anybody, so it's hard to gauge if they fit right or not.”

Musgrove shrugged off the controversy, saying that it was far from the most important thing he's worried about this spring, even if it's a little annoying.

MLB players miffed at sport's new see-through pants

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are signing punter Matt Araiza, who was dropped from a lawsuit in December that had been filed by a woman who alleged she was raped by San Diego State football players in 2021.

The signing was announced by Araiza's agent, Joe Linta, and confirmed a short while later by the team.

“I am proud and honored to sign a contract with the Chiefs,” Araiza said in a statement. “I am thrilled to be able to continue my NFL career. I want to thank my family, who have been my rock and my many friends who have been unwavering in their support. I am excited to begin the next phase of my career with the Super Bowl champs!”

Araiza earned the nickname the “Punt God” at San Diego State while earning All-America honors during the 2021 season, when his massive kicks helped the Aztecs go a school-best 12-2 his senior season. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft, but he was released two days after the woman filed her lawsuit.

She alleged that she was 17 and attending an off-campus party in October 2021 when Araiza, then 21, had sex with her in a side yard at an off-campus house. The woman then claimed he brought her to a bedroom, where a group of men took turns raping her, but Araiza has said he never entered the home during the party and left before the alleged rape occurred.

The woman reported the alleged assault to San Diego police the following day, and her lawsuit was filed in August 2022.

Araiza and most of the other players named in the lawsuit claimed that their encounters with her were consensual.

After a month-long investigation, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office said in December it would not file criminal charges. An audio recording was released of a meeting between prosecutors and the woman in which deputy District Attorney Trisha Amador said she concluded, based on a witness statement, that Araiza “wasn’t even at the party anymore” when the alleged rape could have occurred and he wasn’t visible in videos that were recovered.

The woman agreed to dismiss Araiza from the lawsuit, and he agreed to dismiss a defamation countersuit against her.

“Matt has been forced to defend himself for the last 16 months against false accusations and a campaign to ruin his career in the NFL. He will never get this time in his life back,” Araiza's attorneys, Dick Semerdjian and Kristen Bush, said at the time.

Last year, the New York Jets hosted Araiza for a workout at the team’s facility, six days after a San Diego State investigation found no wrongdoing by him in connection with the alleged rape. He did not sign with the team.

Araiza now appears to be getting his long-awaited shot in the NFL with a team coming off back-to-back Super Bowl titles.

Chiefs sign punter Matt Araiza, who was dropped from lawsuit in December after alleged rape

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals signed Austin Nola to a one-year contract Friday, adding a veteran catcher to provide some insurance behind Salvador Perez alongside young backup Freddie Fermin.

Nola gets a $975,000 salary while in the major leagues and $175,000 while in the minors. He can earn $250,000 in performance bonuses for games while in the major leagues: $50,000 each for 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125.

The 34-year-old was released from a minor league contract by Milwaukee on Thursday after the Brewers finalized a deal with Gary Sánchez.

Nola appeared in 110 games for San Diego two years ago, hitting .251 with four homers and 40 RBIs. But he only hit. 146 with one homer and eight RBIs while appearing in 52 games for the Padres last season.

He is an older brother of Philadelphia pitcher Aaron Nola.

Kansas City has little depth at catcher behind Perez and Fermin, though outfielder MJ Melendez can play the position. The only other catchers in big league camp are non-roster invitees Logan Porter, Tyler Cropley, Sandy León and Rodolfo Durán.

(AP) — The Kansas City Royals signed Austin Nola to a one-year contract Friday, adding a veteran catcher to provide some insurance behind Salvador Perez alongside young backup Freddie Fermin.Nola gets a $975,000 salary while in the major leagues and $175,000 while in the minors. He can earn $250,000 in performance bonuses for games while in the major leagues: $50,000 each for 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125.The 34-year-old was released from a minor league contract by Milwaukee on Thursday after the Brewers finalized a deal with Gary Sánchez.Nola appeared in 110 games for San Diego two years ago, hitting .251 with four homers and 40 RBIs. But he only hit. 146 with one homer and eight RBIs while appearing in 52 games for the Padres last season.He is an older brother of Philadelphia pitcher Aaron Nola.Kansas City has little depth at catcher behind Perez and Fermin, though outfielder MJ Melendez can play the position. Thursday in Hutchinson, the Great Bend girls finished third to secure the final team qualification for Friday's state tournament in Wichita. The Panther boys finished seventh as a team and just missed out on individual state qualification.

Topeka Seaman finished with 2,800 pins for the girls' team championship. Salina South finished second with 2,770 pins, and Great Bend had 2,744 pins to beat fourth-place Topeka West by 140 pins for the final qualifying spot.

Topeka West's Brenna Rutschman had the lone 600 series on the girls' side at The Alley in Hutchinson. Seaman senior Cheyenne Turkin placed second with a 571 series. Lady Panther senior Kaylin Wahlmeier closed with games of 214 and 199 to finish fifth with a 563, just two pins out of fourth. Sophomore Zoey Mayberry topped out at 191 for a 10th-place finish with a 514 series. Senior Emilee Nelson opened with a 188 and placed 12th with a 509 series. Freshman Brooklynn Mayberry rolled a 193 in her first regional game on the way to a 15th-place finish with a 498 series. Paige Heine rolled a 422, and Rionna Rodriguez finished at 298. rooted in methods developed through years of building brackets. The
12-person selection committee spends the season monitoring teams
across the country before gathering five days before Selection Sunday
to being building the bracket. They are guided by a detailed set of
rules that make sure the best 68 teams in the country get the chance
to play.

Steve Sarkisian is college football’s latest $10 million man. The
University of Texas System Board of Regents on Thursday approved a
raise and contract extension for the Longhorns coach to boosts his
guaranteed salary to $10.3 million this year and sign him through the
2030 season. The four-year extension makes Sarkisian one of the
highest paid coaches in the country. Texas won the Big 12 last season
and made the College Football Playoff. Sarkisian's original contract
paid him $5.8 million this year. The board's approval was expected.
The extension was announced in January. The board published financial
details last week.

AMES, Iowa (AP) —
Jake Waters has been promoted to Iowa State running backs coach after
working as a senior offensive quality control staff member the past
three years. Waters was an ISU graduate assistant in 2017 and coached
tight ends, fullbacks and wide receivers at UTEP over three seasons
before he returned to Ames in 2021. Waters was national junior
college offensive player of the year for Iowa Western Community
College in 2012 and a two-year starting quarterback at Kansas State.
He returned to Iowa Western as volunteer quarterbacks coach for two
years before his first stint at Iowa State.

Gamers will be blocked from manually adding players to EA Sports’
new college football game who decide not to accept an offer to have
their name, image and likeness used in it. EA Sports revealed the
safeguard Thursday in its announcement that it has begun reaching out
to athletes to pay them to be featured in the game that’s set to
launch this summer. EA Sports said players who opt in to the game
will receive a minimum of $600 and a copy of EA Sports College
Football 25. EA Sports didn’t say how it plans to prevent people

The format is finally locked in. University presidents have
unanimously approved one last tweak to increase the number of
at-large bids from six to seven. The change reserves five spots for

expanding the CFP from four to 12 teams began in 2019. The new system
finally arrives during the upcoming 2024 season. The next two seasons
are expected to be something of a test drive.

person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press that
former AL batting champion Tim Anderson has agreed to a one-year
contact with the Miami Marlins. The deal for the shortstop is pending
a physical, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity
because the deal was not yet announced. The agreement is worth $5
million, according to ESPN. Anderson is Miami’s first big free
agent addition of the offseason. The two-time All-Star became a free
agent in November after the Chicago White Sox declined a $14 million
option, completing a $25 million, six-year contract.

National League All-Star right-hander is getting the largest contract
ever for a Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher. Another All-Star pitcher is
expected to miss the start of the season for the New York Mets. A
person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press that
Mitch Keller and the Pirates have agreed to a new $77 million,
five-year contract. Meanwhile, the Mets are shutting down Kodai Senga
because of a shoulder strain. Their All-Star right-hander will likely
start the season on the injured list. Senga is going into the second
year of a $75 million, five-year deal in New York after pitching 11
seasons in Japan.

MLB’s new uniform reveal hasn’t gone very well. Now the rampant
criticism has moved below the belt. Major League Baseball Players
Association deputy executive director Bruce Meyer confirmed on
Thursday that the organization is relaying concerns from players to
MLB about the new pants, which are somewhat see-through. The
complaints — first reported by ESPN — are part of broader scorn
for the new uniforms, which are designed by Nike and manufactured by
Fanatics. Commissioner Rob Manfred previously said he expects
criticism to fade, but that was before the below-the-belt criticisms.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.
(AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are signing punter Matt Araiza, who
was dropped from a lawsuit in December that had been filed by a woman
who alleged she was raped by San Diego State football players in
2021. The signing was announced by Araiza’s agent, Joe Linta, and
confirmed a short while later by the Super Bowl champions. The
lawsuit filed by the woman came after a party in 2021 in which she
claimed Araiza had sex with her in a side yard, then brought her
inside a house where a group of men took turns raping her. She agreed
to drop Araiza from the lawsuit when prosecutors concluded he was no
longer at the party when the alleged raped occurred, and he agreed to
drop a defamation countersuit against her.

(AP) — The 15-year-old son of Tiger Woods had a rough welcome in
his first attempt at playing a PGA Tour event. Charlie Woods shot an
86 at a pre-qualifier for the Cognizant Classic. That's one of four
pre-qualifiers from which a total of about two dozen players advance
to the main Monday qualifier for next week's PGA Tour stop. Woods
didn't make a birdie at Lost Lake Golf Club. His round came undone
with a 12 on the par-4 seventh hole. The leading score was 65. Woods

(AP) — Erik van Rooyen of South Africa is feeling right at home in
Mexico. Van Rooyen began the Mexico Open at Vidanta with a 63 for a
one-shot lead over Sami Valimaki of Finland. Van Rooyen is trying to
win a PGA Tour title for the second time in four months in Mexico. He
won the World Wide Technology Championship last November. Van Rooyen
had a pair of eagles at the Vallarta Vidanta course. Among those two
behind was Cristobal Del Solar. He shot 57 two weeks ago on the Korn
Ferry Tour in Bogota.

(AP) — Sara Scalia scored 25 points, All-America center Mackenzie
Holmes had 24 points and nine rebounds, and No. 14 Indiana frustrated
Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark in an 86-69 win over the fourth-ranked
Hawkeyes. Playing for the first time since she broke the NCAA women’s

ESPN “College GameDay” analyst Herbstreit and network broadcaster Fowler announced Thursday on social media they will be voices in EA Sports' upcoming college football video game. Analysts David Pollack and Jesse Palmer made similar announcements.

The broadcasting updates came the same day that media outlets, including ESPN, reported FBS football players were receiving invitations from EA Sports to have their name, image and likeness in the game, which the developer has said would be launching in summer 2024.

John Reseburg, vice president of marketing, communications and partnerships at EA Sports, said Thursday on social media that the game is a “scale of NIL that has never been done before.”

“More than 11,000 individual NIL deals all at once. Guaranteed income for athletes that opt-in. It’s in the game," Reseburg tweeted.

EA Sports College Football 25 will feature all 134 FBS teams, the video-game developer announced.

Notre Dame's inclusion had been a big question mark since the school said in 2021 it would not participate “until such time as rules have been finalized governing the participation of our student-athletes.” But the Fighting Irish's athletic director, Jack Swarbrick, said Tuesday they're in.

“The work that EA SPORTS is doing to provide over 11,000 college student-athletes opportunities to benefit directly from their name, image and likeness is a first-of-its-kind undertaking and we’re proud to have been involved in the process,” Swarbrick said in a statement on social media.

Sean O’Brien, EA Sports vice president of business development, told ESPN that players who opt in will receive $600 and a copy of the game.

A generic avatar created “based on the traditional strength or weakness of a position over the past decade for that school" will be used in place of players who opt out, Daryl Holt, EA Sports senior vice president, told ESPN.

Holt also told the network that gamers will not be able to create an opted-out player, but “I won’t reveal how we’re dealing with that."

Eric Hosmer announced his retirement from baseball Wednesday following a 13-year career that included winning four Gold Gloves and helping lead Kansas City to victory in the 2015 World Series.

Hosmer, 34, was released by the Chicago Cubs on May 25 after hitting .234 with two home runs in 31 games. The first baseman decided not to pursue any other playing opportunities.

“You have to be 110% committed and doing what is necessary both physically and mentally to play at the major league level and I reached a point where I wasn’t there anymore,” Hosmer said. “I’m very satisfied with my career. I feel like I accomplished a lot, was around a lot of great people and have a lot of good stories to tell.”

Hosmer will begin telling those stories on air after partnering with former minor league teammate Anthony Seratelli to form MoonBall Media, which is launching a podcast called “Diggin’ Deep.” Hosmer will be one of the show’s hosts.

“Now that the playing days are over, I feel like I have so many fun stories that I want to give back,” Hosmer said.

Kansas City selected Hosmer third overall in the 2008 amateur draft and he made his major league debut three years later. He spent seven seasons with the Royals before signing an eight-year, $144 million contract with San Diego before the 2018 season.

Hosmer played five seasons for the Padres before being traded to Boston in 2022, then finishing up with the Cubs last year. He had a .276 career batting average and 198 home runs.

The Barton Community College softball team made a rare trip to northeast Kansas on Wednesday in dropping 5-1 and 8-2 contests at Division II No. 8 ranked Johnson County Community College.

The host Cavaliers put game one's decisive four runs on the board in the second inning then in the nightcap plated another four in their first at-bat with another three crossing in the second frame as the Cougars stranded eleven runners preventing a comeback.

Barton slips to 2-6 on the year in final preparation for conference play beginning Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Dodge City Community College. Johnson County improves to 5-3 on the season.

Laci Dryden led the Cougars' fourteen hits on the afternoon with a trio of connections, 2-for-3 in the opener including driving in Barton's lone run in the third frame of the opener before driving in sister Lani Dryden with a two-out triple slicing the deficit to 4-2 in the second inning of nightcap.

Allyson McDougal drove in the Cougars' other run on the day by putting Barton briefly out-front in game two on a one-out, first frame hit scoring Laci's leadoff walk.

The Golden Hurricane (13-13, 4-10) were led by PJ Haggerty, who posted 24 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Tulsa also got 14 points and two steals from Tyshawn Archie. Isaiah Barnes also recorded 10 points and three steals.

Wichita State took the lead with 9:15 remaining in the first half and did not relinquish it. The score was 43-26 at halftime, with Rogers racking up 11 points. Wichita State extended its lead to 57-32 during the second half, fueled by a 10-0 scoring run. Rogers scored a team-high eight points in the second half as his team closed out the win.

Wichita State next plays Sunday against Temple at home, and Tulsa will host Charlotte on Saturday.
