KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs backup B.J. Thompson was taken to a hospital in stable condition Thursday after the defensive lineman experienced a cardiac event during a team meeting, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

The person, speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the event, said team trainers and medical staff were able to react quickly and treat Thompson until paramedics arrived.

The Chiefs planned to wrap up their voluntary offseason workouts on Thursday, but a team spokesman said the practice would be pushed to Friday. That is when Chiefs coach Andy Reid and other players will speak to reporters.

The 27-year-old Thompson was a fifth-round pick of the Chiefs out of Stephen F. Austin in last year's draft. The only game Thompson appeared in was their regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers, when Kansas City already had clinched its playoff spot and the game's outcome was meaningless. Thompson had two tackles in that game.

Chiefs lineman hospitalized after cardiac event during team meeting

The Kansas State High School Activities Association has selected sites for the 2025 KSHSAA state basketball championships. All seven sites have hosted at least once previously. For the first time since 2020, Barton Community College in Great Bend will not host a tournament.

"We here at Barton are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to host a KSHSAA State Basketball Tournament the past several years," said Barton Athletic Director Trevor Rolfs. "Barton put its best foot forward in providing a first-class experience for all qualifying teams and schools during that time."

After hosting the 1A Division I state championships last season, the Colby Event Center has been selected to host the 1A Division II state championships in 2025. The 2A tournaments will return to their traditional home at Bramlage Coliseum after a year’s hiatus.&nbsp;

The KSHSAA continues to have a strong relationship with Barton Community College who has hosted the 1A Division II Tournaments the last four years. Colby will be the fourth community to host the 1A Division II state championships since the class split into divisions in 2011. In 2019, Class 1A held a single tournament without divisions.

“The student-athletes, coaches, school communities and officials who participated in the 1A Division I tournament in Colby last year had a great experience,” KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick said. “Colby was given a chance last year and hosted great championship tournaments. We know they will do the same in 2025. With two new hotels coming online before the 2025 tournaments, the experience for teams, families, fans and officials will be even better.”

Barton Community College couldn’t commit to hosting for a fifth year due to potential events on their campus the week of the state basketball tournaments.

“Trevor Rolfs and his team of Heather Panning, Todd Moore, Brooke Thompson, Brandon Smith, Kelsey Feist, Megan Besecker and more did a tremendous job hosting for us the past three years and we thank them for the outstanding job they did,” KSHSAA Assistant Executive Director Kyle Doperalski said. “We appreciate their team and also understand the need for them to pass on a hosting opportunity in 2025.”

Rolfs added a couple of things in the works caused Barton to hit pause on hosting state basketball.

"Increasing concerns about capacity, particularly with the impending renovation to the south upper level of our facility, combined with the potential for Barton to host Region VI playoff basketball in March 2025 led to this joint decision with KSHSAA."

CLEVELAND (AP) — Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt’s Jr.'s throwing error led to Cleveland scoring three runs on an infield grounder in the seventh inning in the Guardians’ 8-5 win over the Royals on Tuesday night, the first matchup this season between the AL Central’s top two teams.

The Guardians trailed 5-0 in the fourth before storming back to win the three-game series opener and push their division lead to five over the Royals.

Witt clobbered a pair of two-run homers totaling nearly 1,000 feet, but his errant throw in the seventh swung the game to Cleveland.

“I made a mistake,” Witt said. “It cost us the game.”

After Tyler Freeman’s homer tied it 5-5 for the Guardians and chased Royals starter Seth Lugo, Cleveland loaded the bases on a fielder’s choice and two walks — one by Sam Long (0-1) — with two outs when David Fry hit a grounder up the middle.

Witt gloved it to the right of the base and initially tried to beat Josh Naylor to second for a force. When Witt realized he couldn’t get the sliding Naylor, he unleashed a wild throw that first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino had no chance of getting.

The ball wound up in the photographer’s pit, and because Naylor had already gotten to second base, he was awarded third and home.

“I should have just thrown the ball to first and made the play,” he said. “I just kind of slow played it and should have just made the decision to throw it to first. You learn from it and you try not to make those mistakes and do the little things right and tonight I didn’t.

“I’ve got to move on and learn from it,” he said while there was little conversation taking place in Kansas City’s subdued clubhouse following a tough loss.

Over in Cleveland’s side, it was a familiar scene — music and card games following the club’s 15th come-from-behind win.

“Our guys truly believe we’re one rally, one hit away from starting a rally to come back and we don’t quit,” said Guardians manager Stephen Vogt. “These guys don’t quit. And it’s just a testament to who they are. That’s who they’ve always been. And it’s just that belief that we’re going to come back.”

Rookie Cade Smith (3-0) came on for Triston McKenzie, and Emmanuel Clase worked the ninth for his AL-leading 19th save. Clase has given up just one earned run in 2024.

Naylor hit a two-run homer for the Guardians, who reached 40 wins in 60 games for just the fourth time in club history. They also did it in 1954 (42-18), 1995 (42-18) and 1999 (40-20).

Witt connected in the third and fourth innings off Cleveland starter McKenzie, who has given up eight homers in his last three starts.

Royals look to rebound in game two against Cleveland

BOSTON (AP) — Luka Doncic didn’t stay up all night to watch NBA Finals games as a kid. They usually started at something like 3 a.m. in his native Slovenia. He had school to get to a few hours later. He’d wake up and find out who won. Make no mistake, though: Doncic was paying attention. Dreams become reality for Doncic on Thursday night, when the 25-year-old makes his NBA Finals debut for the Dallas Mavericks as they take on the Boston Celtics in Game 1 of this year’s title series. He could become the first player to win a scoring title and a championship in the same season since Shaquille O’Neal in 2000, and a title would surely only add to the argument that Doncic — who leads all players in this postseason in points, rebounds and assists.

The <a href="https://njcaafoundation.com/landing/index" target="_blank">NJCAA Foundation</a> has announced the 2024 Champion Award recipient will be Barton Community College men's basketball player, Myles Thompson. This prestigious award will be presented during the NJCAA Foundation Awards event held on Thursday, June 6 at the Hilton Charlotte University Place at 6:30 PM ET. The event will recognize the NJCAA Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year, the Lea Plarski Award winner, the Champion Award winners, and the Difference Maker Award winner, in addition to the 2024 class of the NJCAA Hall of Fame.&nbsp;

The Champion Award was established to honor a member or former member of the NJCAA community who exemplifies resilience, excellence, and passion.  &nbsp;

Myles Thompson began his collegiate career at Barton Community College (KS) where, as a freshman, averaged 7.1 points and 5.5 rebounds. Entering his sophomore season, he thought it would be like any other year. Thompson, a 6-foot-7 Hutchinson native, played basketball his whole life and was never once worried or concerned about injury or illness. However, things took a turn six weeks before the start of his sophomore season when he fell ill. Receiving medication for a cough and fever, Thompson thought he was back on his way to Barton for a second season, but a week later, he was sick again with all symptoms returning and pain in his right ankle. After experiencing severe rigors and shaking chills, Thompson was hospitalized for 20 days, during which doctors continuously tried to figure out what was going on, and his future in basketball was in question. It was found that Thompson had a blood infection and required surgery on his leg. The surgery was a success and Thompson was headed towards recovery but the question of if and when he'd ever be able to return to basketball was still looming.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After surgery, he returned home to Hutchinson and required daily antibiotics for six weeks. Thompson attempted to return to school but due to his compromised immune system,contracted clostridium difficile and was bedridden for an additional three weeks. Thompson struggled during this time,losing 20 pounds along the way and still being unsure of his athletic future. Through countless physical therapy sessions and a daily regimen of four different antibiotics, Thompson recovered and returned to practice in February 2023.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rededicating his time and efforts to basketball, Thompson began to work&nbsp;out and train with his former high school coach, Bryan Miller. He would wake up early&nbsp;to work out&nbsp;with the high school players in the morning and then lift weights and practice his shots in the evening. Thompson's constant efforts and determination&nbsp;allowed him to step back onto the court&nbsp;at&nbsp;Barton&nbsp;for the 2023-24 season. Through his resilience,&nbsp;character, and faith, Thompson was able to help lead the Cougars to the 2024 NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship title.&nbsp;This past season, Thompson started in all 37 games for the&nbsp;Cougars,&nbsp;averaging 14.0&nbsp;points per game with 6.7&nbsp;rebounds.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Thompson serves as a beacon of inspiration, motivating student-athletes around the world to never give up on their dreams, reminding them that regardless of the circumstances, anything is attainable. Culpepper's 3-run HR helps Kansas State beat Arkansas 7-6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ha-Seong Kim hit a go-ahead three-run double, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Kyle Higashioka homered and the San Diego Padres beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3 on Saturday.

Randy Vásquez (1-3) started after Joe Musgrove was scratched hours before the first pitch with right elbow inflammation and went five innings, allowing three runs and four hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

“I'm very happy and grateful to the organization that I get this opportunity to help out,” said Vásquez, who was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to make the start. “Everything worked out good for us. I do feel a lot more in the loop with my arsenal and grateful for these good results.”

With the Padres trailing 3-2 in the fourth inning, Kim cleared cleared the bases with a double to left field off Royals starter Alec Marsh (4-3).

“It's true that I didn't have the greatest start that I liked, but I felt like I've been hitting the ball really hard but unfortunately a lot of them have been outs lately,” said Kim, who also had a triple. “I did feel myself getting better and now is just the beginning of the summer and I have good memories of the summer, so hopefully I can carry this momentum forward.”

Marsh gave up five earned runs and seven hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out three.

Tatis Jr. hit a solo homer in the top of the first to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. But Vinnie Pasquantino, who went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning to put the Royals ahead.

Pasquantino had another chance to get Kansas City closer in the seventh when he came up with two outs and the bases loaded, but Jeremiah Estrada struck him out.

“There are always opportunities,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Any time you have the bat in your hand, you have an opportunity. I thought we competed well at the plate we just weren’t able to extend the lead when we had it and weren’t able to come back when we were behind.”

Higashioka homered in the top of the ninth for his second of the season.

“That was a great team win,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said. “We had contributions from a lot of people and that typically starts on the mound and our man Randy battled through five. He did his part and the bullpen did a really good job.”

The Padres will look for their first sweep of the season Sunday, while the Royals will try to avoid being swept for the first time this year.

A trio of members from the Barton Community College tennis program have received All-America honors announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

For the 8th ranked women's team, Luciana Braga finished the season ranked No. 5 overall of the standings landing on the ten-member post-season award list.

Victor Alves and Gabriel Garay led the men's team to a final No. 4 national ranking, Alves finishing as the No. 8 ranked player in the NJCAA with Garay in the No. 10 position.

For Head Coach Lyle Stickney, the awards are his 11th All-America performances with Braga the first women's since Alexandra Abyasova's 2021 while the men's comes on the heels of Gustavo Campos' 2022 performances for the 2nd and 3rd men's singles accomplishment.

Final rankings had Braga joined by fellow freshman Andjela Mrvaljelic at No. 26 in singles with Braga's doubles rankings with sophomore Carmen Lyons ranked as the No. 19 tandem.

On the men's side, sophomore Fernando Andre also finished in the rankings at No. 41, teaming with Alves in doubles to earn a final 8th duo ranking while Garay and fellow freshman Shane Tapera ranked as the No. 22 squad.

Braga took just two losses all season, both coming against the eventual national champion Yerkezhan Arystanbekova of Cowley College, in finishing the year the year 13-2. Seeded 5th at the national tournament, Braga rolled to the quarterfinal before dispatching the 4th seed in straight sets to make her second appearance in the national semifinals. Derailed last year by the top seed, the same fate occurred this year as the second loss against Arystanbekova ending the Porto Alegre, Brazil, native's Barton career in the final four.

Braga's character on the court showed throughout the tournament was rewarded with the prestigious NJCAA "Jovana Vasic Spirit of Competition Award". Nominated, evaluated, and selected by coaches and officials at the championship. Braga was rewarded of her fair play, sportsmanship, and competitive spirit with the annual award present in memory of St. Petersburg College standout Jovana Vasic. Braga's recipient of the award marked the third time the Cougars have received the award since 2017, as the sophomore joined 2024 Barton Sports Hall of Fame inductee Neus Torregrosa's pair won in 2017 and 2018.

Alves was the Cougar's top singles player all season compiling a 14-3 record. Dropping an early season tight loss to an NAIA player, Alves won five straight before falling to Cowley's No. 3 ranked Bruno Nhavene.

Seeded 4th at the national tournament, freshman from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was upset in the first round by the nation's 24th ranked player but bounced back to his next four matches to capture one of the two Cougars' consolation bracket titles.

The Cougars' No. 2 draw player had just two three-set matches all season as his straight set dominance rolled through fourteen matches into the eventual national championship match.

Defeating three opponents at nationals including the 8th and 5th seed, Garay's bid for the title fell short to 2nd seeded Reiya Komagata of Cowley in completing the Carazinho, Brazil, freshman's year at 14-1 overall.

Trio of Cougars earn ITA All-America tennis honors

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Big 12 schools will share in a record $470 million of revenue distribution, the conference announced Friday when wrapping up its first spring meetings as a 14-team league and before growing by two more teams.

While the 10 full-share members will get smaller amounts than they got last year because of the addition of the four schools that joined the league for the 2023-24 academic year, Commissioner Brett Yormark said the conference is more relevant than it has ever been.

“We went with stability as a conference and we felt it was investing in all the right ways and for all the right reasons,” Yormark said. “Clearly that was the right one for this conference as we think about where we’re going.”

First-year members BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF each will get partial shares of about $18 million each. That leaves about $398 million to be split among the league's other 10 schools, including Oklahoma and Texas before they move this summer to the Southeastern Conference.

About $440 million was distributed last year.

The Big 12 will grow to 16 teams with the additions of Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah from the Pac-12, officially on Aug. 1. The four incoming schools took part in this week's meetings, while Oklahoma and Texas did not.

Yormark said the increases came as a result of bigger College Football Playoff and bowl revenues, growth in ticket revenue across all of the conference championships and sponsorship after streamlining that to be handled directly by the conference instead of using outside parties.

According to tax filings released last week, the five power conferences generated $3.55 billion in the 2022-23 fiscal year, with the Big Ten reporting revenue of $879.9 million compared with $852.6 million for the SEC. The ACC saw the most significant increase, going from $617 million in 2021-22 to $707 million.

The Pac-12, which will see 10 of its 12 members disperse to other conferences in 2024-25, generated $603.9 million. The Big 12 was fifth at $510.7 million, which was before distributions when it was still only a 10-member league.

Like the other leagues, the Big 12 is preparing for big changes after news of a landmark $2.8 billion settlement that will transform how athletes are compensated. The power conferences last week agreed to settle a host of antitrust claims that could start steering millions of dollars directly to athletes as soon as the 2025 fall semester.

“I think we ended up in a fair and reasonable place,” Yormark said. “Obviously, it’s going to be a changing landscape. But I also do see opportunities in that changing landscape, and the work really starts now. A lot of work to be done. I look at this as a bit of a reset for our industry. And we’re prepared for that. The ADs, myself, the board, we’ve been discussing that reset for quite some time. So it’s not coming as a surprise.”

When he became the Big 12 commissioner two summers ago, Yormark was an executive with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation and a former CEO of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets. He spent almost 15 years with the Nets, overseeing the club’s move from New Jersey and construction of the Barclays Center, and previously was with NASCAR, where he oversaw a $750 million agreement with Nextel Communications for naming rights to the circuit’s top racing series.

“Since I took this job, you know, I said from day one, I was open for business. And I guess you could say we’re open for business now more so than ever before,” Yormark said. “When I think about my background, I certainly do believe that collegiate athletics is shifting, more closely to where I came from than where we are today.”

Big 12 will distribute record $470 million, though 10 full-share members getting little less

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden welcomed the Kansas City Chiefs to the White House on Friday, lauding the back-to-back Super Bowl champion team for its sportsmanship on and off the field, and breaking an unofficial political rule about headwear. He tried on a Chiefs helmet the team gave him as a gift.

“It was cool to see him put the helmet on,” quarterback Patrick Mahomes told reporters after the celebration on the South Lawn. “We didn't expect that."

Coach Andy Reid speculated that Biden might have been the first president to wear an NFL helmet.

"You all witnessed it. It's history being made,” said Reid, who appeared with Mahomes.

At the sun-splashed celebration, the Democratic president recalled that he had said during the Chiefs' visit last year that the team is building a “dynasty.” He noted the struggles they encountered last season on the road to another Super Bowl trophy and said, “I don't think anybody's doubting you now.”

Of the doubters, Biden joked, “I know what that feels like.”

He referred to Mahomes as the “comeback king, not kid” and said he'll never forget watching the game as the Marine One presidential helicopter brought him back to the White House that Sunday night.

The Chiefs came from behind in overtime to defeat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 to win the Super Bowl in Las Vegas in February. The Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles to win the Super Bowl in 2023.

They have won the Lombardi Trophy three times in the past five years.

Biden also lauded the players for their actions in February when gunfire rang out during Kansas City's parade and rally honoring the team. A mother of two was killed, and others injured.

“We saw pride give way to tragedy,” Biden said, adding that, “amid the chaos this team stepped up.”

“‘This team is exceptional,” the president said, adding that the country as a whole must “do more to stop the tragic shootings before they happen.”

Kicker Harrison Butker, who made headlines by assailing some of Biden's policies during a commencement speech earlier in May, accompanied his teammates to the White House. Butker recently defended his comments, saying he had no regrets about expressing his beliefs.

In the May 16 speech at Benedictine College, a private Catholic liberal arts school in Atchison, Kansas, Butker congratulated the women who were receiving degrees and said most of them were probably more excited about getting married and having children.

He criticized some of Biden's policy positions, including the president's condemnation of the Supreme Court’s reversal of its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide. Abortion is an issue that Biden and his fellow Democrats hope to use to their advantage in the November elections.

Butker also tackled Biden’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed nearly 1.2 million people in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Many of those who attended the celebration had hoped to catch a glimpse of singer Taylor Swift, tight end Travis Kelce 's girlfriend. She has been traveling abroad on her Eras tour and was not at the White House.

But the president and Kelce shared a moment when Biden said he'd invite Kelce, who often is brash and outspoken, to the microphone, “but God only knows what he'd say.”

“My fellow Americans,” Kelce said to laughter. “It's nice to see you all yet again." Then he told Biden he was going back to his place on the riser because “they told me if I came up here I'd get tased.”

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After a 90-minute weather delay, NCAA Tournament officials announced the suspension of Friday's K-State – Louisiana Tech contest at Baum-Walker Stadium. The Wildcats' opening round game will resume Saturday morning at 11 a.m.

The winner of the third-seeded Wildcats – second-seeded Bulldogs game will play top-seeded Arkansas (44-14) at 8 p.m. Saturday night, while the loser will face fourth-seeded SEMO (34-26) at 2 p.m.

K-State, La Tech Game Suspended Until Saturday Morning

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jake Cronenworth drove in three runs in a nine-run eighth inning, Luis Arraez had four hits and the San Diego Padres beat the Kansas City Royals 11-8 on Friday night.

Cronenworth hit a two-run single in the eighth to give the Padres a 4-3 lead and added an RBI double to make it 11-3. He leads San Diego with 38 RBIs. Luis Arraez had his fifth four-hit game of the season.

“That was amazing,” Arraez said. “When we put the ball in play, good things happen, so we just need to continue to do that so we can win a lot of games."

San Diego took command in the eighth inning, getting seven straight singles before the Royals recorded an out. The Padres totaled 18 hits in the game and had 10 singles and 11 total hits in the eighth inning, a club record for an inning.

“That eighth inning was pretty special and you don’t see many of them,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said. “We just put together professional at-bats throughout, so it was pretty exciting. The approach was good we were just taking what the game gave us. It was a great inning and we got contributions from all.”

Yuki Matsui (3-0) got the victory with a scoreless seventh.

Dylan Cease gave up three runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Cease made his 16th career start against the Royals, which is his most against any club in his career. He also added to his strikeout total against Kansas City, eclipsing 104 strikeouts, the most against one opponent.

“I think my outing was good enough to keep us in it, but it wasn’t very dominant," Cease said. “I am not thrilled with it, but I am happy we got the win, and the offense picked it up.”

Michael Wacha pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk. It was his lowest strikeout total of the season and the fewest since June 19, 2023, while with San Diego. John Schreiber (3-1) gave up three runs in the eighth.

Nelson Velázquez hit a solo home run in Kansas City's five-run ninth.

“That’s the nature of baseball," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “I wish we could explain the ins and outs of why, but a lot of it has to do with these guys never quitting. When their back is against the wall they know they have to go and keep fighting.”
