Robyn Renee Appel, 57, passed away November 2, 2021 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS.

She was born July 6, 1964 in Dodge City, KS, the daughter of Johnnie D. and Kathleen “Kathy” A. Grumbein Appel. Robyn was friendly and full of energy. She would greet you with a hug, kiss, and pat! She loved babies, animals, (although all animals were “cats”) her stuffed animals, helping in the kitchen and going for car rides. She liked to laugh, be the center of attention and would get very excited about special occasions, especially if it was centered around her.

Robyn was mostly non-verbal and used sign language often to communicate. She struggled and often was frustrated trying to express her feelings.

Survivors include two brothers, Mike (Phyllis) Appel, Dodge city and John Pat Appel, Topeka; three nephews, Jeremy (Ashley) Appel, Jetmore, Josh Appel, Mason City, IA, Caleb Appel, Topeka; niece, Amy (Jon) Eilert, Beloit and six great-nieces and nephews, Korbin, Colt, Quinn, Callie, Kassidy, Cambryn and lots of friends. She will be greatly missed by all her caregivers and roommates who always looked out for her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Kathy Appel

Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, November 8, 2021 at Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore.

Alwana Crutcher, 98, passed away November 2, 2021, in Hoisington. She was born November 27, 1922, in Newcastle, Texas, to Robert and Winnie (Blanton) Weatherbee. Alwana married William Crutcher July 20, 1941, in Graham, Texas. He died Sept. 24, 1988.

Alwana, a resident of Hoisington since 1965, was a homemaker and devoted wife, daughter and grandmother. She was a life member of V.F.W. Auxiliary, Post 7428, Hoisington, and enjoyed cooking, gardening, crocheting and was a voracious reader.

Survivors include one son, Bill Crutcher of Hoisington; two daughters, Dianne Scott and Wynee Weatherbee of Hoisington, and Donita Crutcher of Hoisington; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Crutcher; son, Robert Crutcher; two sisters, Anna Mae Boren and Beulah J. Webb; and two grandsons, Brian Scott and Jordan Boor.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 6, 2021, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, with Rhonda Templing, SAM, presiding. Interment will follow at Hoisington Cemetery, Hoisington. Alwana Crutcher

Mary “Evelyn” Van Steenburgh, 83, died November 2, 2021, at her home in Hoisington, Kansas. She was born May 8, 1938, in Big Spring, Texas, the daughter of W.E. “Bill” and Lena E. (Wallace) Hanson.

Evelyn graduated from Big Spring High School. She worked as a Nurse’s Aide and later as a secretary for the Howard County Clerks Office.

In July of 1975, she married Fred Van Steenburgh. He survives.

Other survivors include son, Marlon Hale (Jill) of Midland, Texas; four grandchildren, Aletha Garland (Allen), Amanda Dennis (Geoff), Athena Miller (Jeff), Billy Paul Herl; and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Billy Marvin Hanson, and a daughter, Sheri Quiroga.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m., Monday, November 8, 2021, at Mt. Olive Cemetery, Big Spring, Texas. Friends may sign the book at the funeral home.

Mary “Evelyn” Van Steenburgh

Dolores Ann Bieberle-Westbrook, 91, died October 31, 2021, at Country Place Senior Living, Hoisington. She was born January 22, 1930, in Rural Redwing, Kansas, the daughter of Anthony P. and Veronica L. (Meyeres) Francis. Dolores graduated from the high school in Odin in 1948.

She married Gilbert Bieberle on August 22, 1950, at St. Rose Catholic Church, Great Bend. To this union, five children were born. Dolores was a devoted mother, homemaker and farmwife. She always had a large garden and helped with all aspects of the farm until Gilbert’s death on August 14, 1984.

She later married James W. Westbrook on August 12, 1988, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington. They then moved to Augusta, Kansas, where she was a member of the St. James Catholic Church and Altar Society, and faithful in her devotional hour. They spent many happy years traveling together until his death on November 29, 2003.

Dolores then moved back to Hoisington in 2018, where she became once again a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

She is survived by four children; Janiece E. Klenda (Michael) of LaCrosse, Katherine A. “Kay” Demel (Rick) of Hiawatha, Glen J. Bieberle (Starla) and Darin A. Bieberle, all of Redwing; daughter-in-law, Mary Bieberle of St. John; five stepchildren, Cheryl Hoffman and Tony Westbrook, both of California, Sonya Westbrook of North Carolina, and Randy Westbrook and June Westbrook of Colorado; nine grandchildren, Joel, Sarah, Joshua, Jared, Justin, Kristin, Deidra, Trevor and Ryan; one step grandson, Jason; and 14 great grandchildren, Grace, Ava, Luke, Brody, Bristol, Clayton, Chase, Clark, Lainey, Rhett, Sawyer, Wilder, Bodhi, and one more on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son, Keith D. Bieberle; five brothers, Ed, Leonard, Bernard, Marcellus, and Ray Francis; and three sisters, Martha Francis, Margaret E. Gates, and Joan Krier.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Vigil and Rosary will begin at 7 p.m., all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.

Anne Dunekack, age 77, longtime Great Bend, Kan., resident, passed away early Sunday morning, Oct. 31, 2021, at Azria Health, Great Bend. Anne was born May 24, 1944 at Corpus Christi, Texas, to Arthur M. and Bertha E. (Sedgwick) Preston. She moved to Great Bend in August of 1962 to attend the Dominican School of Nursing, where she received her Registered Nursing degree. She worked for Drs. Polson and Schuetz in Great Bend for nearly all of her 40-plus year nursing career, retiring in 2006. She was united in marriage to Darrel Dunekack on Oct. 24, 1965, at Great Bend. He preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 2013.&nbsp; &nbsp; Mrs. Dunekack was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Survivors include two sons, Michael Dunekack and his fiancee’ Kendra Kaiser, and David Dunekack, both of Great Bend; and two grandchildren, Camryn Dunekack and Cal Dunekack.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Darrel Dunekack; and an infant brother, Don Lee Preston.

Wanda M. Stanford, 60, passed away October 26, 2021 at her home in Larned.

She was born October 26, 1964 in Larned, the daughter of Charles and Frances Thomson Stanford.

A longtime area resident, she grew up in Hutchinson, graduating in the 1983 class of Hutchinson High School. She was a Licensed Mental Health Technician at Larned State Hospital and she enjoyed beading, crafting, reading, playing cards, and was a Kansas City Chiefs fan.

She is survived by Mary (Jeanne) Chaffin, Coffeyville, Clayton (LeAnne) Chaffin, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and numerous other cousins.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Sonia, and two aunts, Betty Base and Patricia Chaffin.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Ricky Meier

Stephen Edward Hart, 75, died October 30, 2021, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born November 28, 1945, in Hays, Kansas, the son of James Michael and Cecilia (Sack) Hart. Stephen graduated from St. Joseph Acadamy of Hays, and then went on to earn his bachelor's and master's degrees from Wichita State University.

Stephen was in education for 30 years. He taught K-5th grade and was a school administrator and principal for the Diocese of Wichita. He then went on to teach in Marion, Kansas, where he taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. Later he worked for the American Milk Production Inc. of Hillsboro and was an office manager for Pratt Well, Pratt, Kansas.

He was a member of St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Russell, Kansas, and the Knights of Columbus Council. Stephen put many happy miles on his treasured Harley trike often riding in Toy Runs and with clubs. He was a gun enthusiast and enjoyed target shooting, loved doing yard work and was very particular with its care, and loved to draw. He was also considered the Clark Griswald of Christmas lights. Stephen’s famous quote was “The one that eats the fastest gets the mostest!” This was true in his love of fried chicken.

He is survived by his wife of sixteen years, Mary Hart of the home; daughter, Lisa Sewell and husband Eric of Trinity, Florida; son, John Hart of Houston, Texas; stepchildren, Cody Roach of Russell, Brandon Roach of Great Bend, Shiloh Roach and wife Krystal of Russell, Chelsie Link and husband Shane of Great Bend; sister, Barbara Janzing of Bel Aire; brother, Joe Hart and wife Kathy of Amarillo, Texas, Delia Hart of Ocarver, Washington; sisters-in-law, Shawna Shadduck and husband Kelly of Beaver, Michelle Root and husband Steve of Great Bend; brothers-in-law, Everett Hoeffner and wife Davina of Dallas, Texas and Dennis Krawetzke of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Trevor Hart, Kyle &amp; Justin Sewell; and nine step-grandchildren, Cheyenne Roach, Annabelle and Alyssa Roach, Aiden, Andy and Reagan Roach, Rylee Rupp, Koby and Jamison Link; and his beloved dogs, Hunter, Teddy, and Harley.

Pammie Rose Shank, 58, passed away October 18, 2021 at her home in Larned.

She was born February 7, 1963 in Aransas Pass, TX, the daughter of Clinton Harold and Iona “Betty” Bethine Norris Lauber. A longtime area resident, she was the Assistant Cashier for 32 years at the Fusion Bank (First State Bank) in Larned.

She was a member of the Larned Area Chamber Ambassadors and a past member of the Jaycees Club. She enjoyed fishing, hunting and loved to travel.

On May 1, 1989, she married Jan Arlyn Shank in Las Vegas, N.V. He survives.

Other survivors include brother, David (Martha) Lauber, Cheney, WA; sister, Tammie (Jimmy) McClaren, Kinsley; two nieces, Kaitlyn (Joby) Reisenauer and their children, Quintin and Tobin, Mackenzie (Cory) Dilport and their daughter, Ember and a nephew, Cole (Kristin) McClaren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert and Terry Lauber and a sister, Sandra Davis.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 6, 2021 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with Pastor Ryan Webster presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, November 5, 2021 at the mortuary.

Stanley R. Haynes, 90, passed away October 29, 2021 at Country Living of Larned.

He was born February 2, 1931 in Amarillo, Texas, the son of Frank and Helen Blanton Haynes.

A longtime area resident, he was an electrical contractor and the founder of Haynes Electric, Larned where he was currently serving on the Board of Directors. He was a member of the Frist Presbyterian Church, Building and Trade Board, and the Country Club, all of Larned.

On September 5, 1948 he married Norma J. Snavely at St. Paul Minnesota; she preceded him in death on December 6, 2013.

Survivors include four sons, Kenneth S. (Patricia) Haynes, Media, PA, Bradley R. (Jeanine) Haynes, West Field, IN, Keith R. Haynes, and Jim S. (Suzan) Haynes, both of Larned; daughter, Cynthia A. Claussen, Springdale, AR; twelve grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Gene Haynes; a sister, Phyllis Bethel; and son-in-law Ron Claussen.

Clark Dale McEachern, 57, passed away September 24, 2021, in Lake Charles, La. He was born on December 27, 1963 at Benkelman, Neb. to Don and Kay (Smith) McEachern. He married LaNette Morlock in 1980 and they later divorced. He then married Joan Dekle in August 2009.

Clark had a passion for all things related to the water. He especially loved fishing and was the Captain of a supply boat. He also loved spending time with his dogs, hunting, and riding his motorcycle.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Kay and Gail Hulse of Great Bend; his wife, Joan McEachern of Freeport, Fla.; a son, Shawn McEachern of Moorehead, Mont.; his sister, Tonna Thomas and her significant other Chad Betts of Newton; a stepdaughter, Cami Dekle; and a half brother, Christopher McEachern. He was preceded in death by his father, Don McEachern.

James Philip “Jim” Steitz, 80, passed away October 28, 2021, at his home in Great Bend. He was born on October 28, 1941, in Ness County to Richard and Emilie (Mateyec) Steitz. He married Ruth Van Winkle August 21, 1964, at Byers.

A longtime Great Bend resident, Jim was the owner of J&amp;S Cash Register Sales and Service. He also farmed and sold Aloe Vera in his spare time. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, serving on the Building and Grounds Committee, as well as the Stewardship Board. He was a proud supporter of 4-H, loved attending his coffee group, and especially cherished time spent with his family and friends. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving from 1963-1967, having made two West Pac cruises aboard the U.S.S. Gurke.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Steitz of the home; daughters. Kim Kummer (Steve) of Great Bend; Vicki Tucker (Brad) of Pleasant Dale, Neb. and their children, Bailee Tucker, Miranda Tucker and Cason Tucker, and Brenda French (John) of Council Grove and their children, Brendan Steitz, Emilie French, Hawk French, Natalie French, Blaise French and Grace French; sisters in law, Lynda Steitz and Gail Drotts; brother in law, Ken Van Winkle (Paula); and nieces and nephews, Jaime, Nicole, Jorja, Mikel, Kandee, Kathy, Kerrie, Kristy, and Todd; and family at heart, Martha Wondra, Tiffany (Tim), Tamara (Mark), Jessi, Abi (Chris) and Olivia. Loarn Leo Bucl, 69, of Sublette, died Monday, October 25, 2021, in hospice in Kansas City, after a long battle with cancer. He was born October 11, 1952, in La Crosse, KS, to Ernest and Hedy Bucl.

He graduated from Otis-Bison High School and attended Kansas State University, earning a bachelor's degree in Crop Protection. On April 16, 1977, he married Janet Sullivan in Holton. They made their home in Sublette, where he established and ran a business as a crop consultant in the Southwest Kan. region.

Loarn had a passion for all things related to agriculture, including crop production and entomology. He loved to teach and share his knowledge with others. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed sharing these experiences with family and friends.

He was an active member and served on the boards of the National Alliance of Independent Crop Consultants, Kansas Association of Independent Crop Consultants, and the Foundation for Environmental Agriculture Education. Survivors include his four sons, Casper (Jenni) of McKinney, TX, Lucas (Lindsay) of Overland Park, KS, Sheldon of Overland Park, KS, and Colby of Lenexa, KS; three brothers, Craig, Bradley, &amp; Bryan; one sister, Diana Sunley; and five grandchildren, Mackenzie, Owen, Carter, Jackson and Leo. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet; mother Hedy and father Ernest. Daniel L. Harsch, 72, passed away October 24, 2021 at Diversicare of Larned.

He was born November 20, 1948 at Bernalillo, New Mexico, the son of Thomas B. and Geraldine M. Driscoll Harsch Jr. Moving from Colorado to Larned in 1971, he was a longtime area resident and was a former Police Officer, EMT, and retired from the Larned State Hospital in 2010.

He was of the Catholic religion and was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, American Legion Riders, Patriot Guard, all of Larned and served in the United States Marine Corps during Vietnam.

Survivors include longtime companion, Jeannie Beer, Larned; step-daughter, Stephanie A. Yahne, Lakeside, CA; two sisters, Patricia (Terri Coomer) Harsch, Fort Collins, CO, Kimberly (Russ) Bird, San Diego, CA; one brother, Herbie Pirrung, Austin, TX; grandson, Wyatt Tatloc, Lakeside, CA; nieces and nephews, BJ (Alisha), Jamie (Dani), Bennett (Nikki), Kolby, Slater.

Zelda L. Milner, 88, passed away on Oct. 23, 2021 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS. Born on Oct. 11, 1933 to parents Theodore A. &amp; Inza I. (Hawkins) Ward. Zelda grew up in Quincy, KS. After high school, she graduated from American Business College in Wichita and the Menninger Bible Class of the Young Woman’s Christian Association in Topeka. She married Marion Milner on Apr. 26, 1953 in Eureka, KS. He died in 1973. A 60+ year resident of Ellinwood, she worked as a receptionist for Dr. Stone's dentist office. Zelda was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ellinwood, its women's group, and the BCCC Cougar&nbsp;Club.&nbsp;

Survivors include son, Steve Milner, Las Vegas, NV and daughter, Sue Milner, Las Vegas, NV; and 2 grandchildren, Natalie Milner and Cristen Buckenroth. Zelda was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Ward and sister, Melba Fechter.

Zelda was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ellinwood, its women's group, and the BCCC Cougar&nbsp;Club.&nbsp;Survivors include son, Steve Milner, Las Vegas, NV and daughter, Sue Milner, Las Vegas, NV; and 2 grandchildren, Natalie Milner and Cristen Buckenroth. Zelda was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Ward and sister, Melba Fechter.Graveside service will take place at 11 AM at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery on Mon., Nov. 1st with Pastor Tom Reazin officiating. Linda Fern (Croft) Maser, widow of Virgil Maser, left this world to be with Jesus on Tuesday, October 26, 2021. She was born Linda Fern Croft in Larned, Kansas on November 17, 1933, daughter of Royal (R.O.) and Blanch (Wheeler) Croft of Hodgeman County. She was the youngest of four children.

She must have liked Virgil because she eloped May 16, 1952 and married him again 50 years later at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Great Bend, KS, surrounded by her children, friends and family. They lived a short time in Hodgeman County then Hutchinson, Kansas but spent the better part of their lives together in Great Bend, Kansas. They were married for 62 years and raised eight children.

Linda was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She “could get lost in a book” and her love for reading lasted a lifetime. She was second in her eighth grade graduating class and the Bazine High School Class of ’51 Salutatorian. She was active in 4-H where she learned to sew. And if she got it wrong, her mom would rip it out and make her do it again! She was most proud of her blue ribbons for sheep, sewing and cooking. She continued the 4-H legacy with her own children. She attended Fort Hays State University for one year.

Linda was a restaurant owner—the original “Granny” from Granny’s Kitchen—seamstress, painter/artist, quilter, and a thrifty entrepreneur. Over the years, she made and sold care bears, her paintings, denim quilts and offered the community a traveling baked goods shop where everything was delicious and fresh! She had a love for music from stepping out on the dance floor and kicking up some dust to her beautiful soprano vocals at church.

She knew that life would never be handed to her—she’d have to go out and get it. Her advice was to “turn things that trouble you over to God and if He thinks they need fixed He’ll go the last mile.”

After her mother passed away, Linda cared for her father for nine years in her Great Bend home. Once their children were living life, she and Virgil would travel for Shaklee conventions and bowling trips. They visited New York City, Washington D.C., the Caribbean and Hawaii amongst many other cities and sites throughout the U.S.

After Virgil passed in 2013, Linda lived with her daughter and son-in-law near Pawnee Rock, Kansas. She enjoyed the farm life.

Survivors include her children, Michael Maser (Mary), El Paso, TX, Daniel Maser (Carol), Great Bend, Cindy Rogers, Rush Center, Benjamin Maser (Marisa), Hutchinson, Laura Straub (Travis), Pawnee Rock, Sandra Geschwentner (Brent), Belle Plaine, DeAnna Maser (Santo), Palm Harbor, FL, and daughter-in-law Shirley Maser, Seward; seventeen grandchildren: Brian and Michelle; Shannon, Dal, Christopher and Brandon; Joseph and Jeanna; Amanda, Matthew and Dakota; Brandon, Allyson and Grant; Joshua, Jordan and Jacob;

and more than a dozen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by twin daughters, Jeannie and Janet; her parents; her husband, Virgil Maser; a son, Kim Ivan Maser; and siblings Nina, Loren and Maxine.

Linda lived many years with dementia—but it did not define her. She could often be found smiling, singing “Clementine,” or playing a unique combo of “Chop Sticks” and “How Great Thou Art.” She is loved and will be missed.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, October 31, 2021 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 1, 2021, at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, with Reverend Tim Bever and Pastor Tim Singleton presiding. GREAT BEND, KANSAS - Donna Nadine Marbut, 67, passed away October 24, 2021 at home in Great Bend, Kansas. She was born on August 26, 1954, at Smith Center, Kansas, to Donald Eugene &amp; Myrna (Yenne) Sheets.

Coming from Smith Center in 1962, Donna was a Great Bend resident. She was a nurse at Hoisington’s Cheyenne Meadows Living Center, Cherry Village, Great Bend Manor, and Ellinwood Country Living, retiring in 2019. She especially loved to spend time with her family.

Survivors include two sons, Jason Marbut and wife Mandy of McPherson, and Trevor Marbut and wife Sam of Lenexa; a brother, John Sheets and wife Vicki of Great Bend; a stepbrother, Steve Skeels of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three stepsisters, Vicki Schamaun and husband Mike of New Braunfels, Tex., Cathy Winters of Phillipsburg, and Sheila Stocker and husband Randy of Shelton, Neb.; three grandchildren, Tyler Marbut and wife Taylor, Makenzie Marbut, and Kaleigh Marbut; and three great-grandchildren, Brantlie Marbut, Adlie Marbut and Carter Marbut. Sharon Louise Smolik, 74, passed away October 23, 2021, at Medicalodges of Great Bend. She was born on November 18, 1946, at Great Bend to Bill &amp; Hilda (Ehrlich) Galliart. She married Robert Smolik on November 28, 1963, at Great Bend.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Sharon was a hostess and cook for various places in town, including, USD 428 Central Kitchen, Kiowa Kitchen, Great Bend Learning Center and the Dominican Sisters of Peace. She most recently retired from True Value. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Altar Society, VFW Post #3111, and the American Legion Post #180 Auxiliary. Sharon loved to cook and especially spend time with family.

Survivors include her husband Robert Smolik of the home; a daughter, Darla Stroud and husband Huie of Great Bend; two granddaughters, Jamie Johnson and husband Scott, and Jessika Stroud; and two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Kolton. She was preceded in death by her father, Bill Galliart, and her mother, Hilda Meisner.

Raymond Schaffer was born to Frank and Barbara (Urban) Schaffer, on February 27, 1931, on the family farm near Loretto, KS.&nbsp; Raymond passed from this world on October 23, 2021.

He spent his childhood years going to the Catholic Grade School in Loretto, helping with farm chores and spent many Sunday afternoons playing baseball. Being the youngest in the family, he learned many useful life skills from his parents and siblings.

He married the love of his life, Mary Lou Schuckman on July 29, 1952. Together they moved around and worked at many jobs supporting each other and their love.&nbsp; They lived in and worked in La Crosse, KS, Denver, CO, Dodge City, KS, on the farm at Alamota, KS, Montezuma, KS, Ulysses, KS, Garden City, KS, and Round Rock, Texas, before returning full circle, back to La Crosse in 1991.&nbsp; During this moving about&nbsp;they also raised two children, Tamra and Troy.

Some of the jobs Raymond held through the years were carpentry, mechanics, sales, and factory production of mobile homes and customized vans. He was also half of the Handy Pair with his brother Francis in Round Rock.

Raymond and Mary Lou also shared a love and the creative skills of remodeling many of the homes in which they lived. They remodeled and repurposed homes, which was a fine tribute to their German roots and heritage. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Barbara, an infant sister, Eleanor, a sister, Mary Jones, four brothers, Clarence, Aloyius, John, and Francis, and a son-in-law, Brad Sligar.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary Lou, his children, Tamra Sligar, of Garden City, KS, and son Troy and wife Janet of Waco, TX, nine grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Services will be on Thursday, October 28, 2021, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in La Crosse. The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.&nbsp; A rosary will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the funeral mass celebrating Raymond’s life will begin at 10:30, followed by inurnment at La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse.

Viola Ruth Ummen, 96, passed away on October 21, 2021, at Diversicare of Larned. She was born on March 4, 1925, at Claflin, to Henry &amp; Anna (Christians) Riemann. She married Lester J. Ummen on February 14, 1960, at Great Bend. He died December 29, 2000. 

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Ruth was a homemaker for many years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. At 18 she moved to Kansas City to become a "Rosie the Riveter" at the North American Aviation plant during WWII. She supported the war effort by sanding airplane wings and delivering parts. She returned to the area and worked at various local businesses, including Scheufler Supply, as a secretary and bookkeeper. Her pastimes included bowling, traveling, water skiing, and quilting. She became a full-time farm wife and added gardening, genealogy, and painting to her hobbies. Ruth especially loved spending time with her family and traveling with them to share new adventures. She spent endless hours involved with school and church activities, scout activities, and 4-H activities to support her children's interests. 

Survivors include a son, Mark Ummen and wife Tracy (Bellendir) Ummen of Springfield, Va.; a daughter, Dr. Karla Eisele of Flatwoods, Ky.; four grandchildren, Jessica (Damm) Lamphere, Paul Damm, Christopher Ummen and wife Helenna Cunha, and Sarah Ummen; and 3 great-grandchildren, Delilah Damm, Paul Damm Jr., and Onyx Lamphere. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester Ummen; and her siblings, Willis Riemann, Albert Riemann, Opal Cox, and Mabel Bender. 

There will be no visitation and a graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 28, 2021, at the Great Bend Cemetery with Reverend Merle Brockhoff presiding. Memorials have been designated to Barton County Historical Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Viola Ruth Ummen

Sandra Elaine Robinson, 72, passed away October 22, 2021 at Pratt Regional Medical Center, Pratt, Kansas.

She was born February 19, 1949 in Las Animas, Colorado; the daughter of Ellsworth J. and Vivian L. Buhrer (Davidson) Miller. A longtime area resident; she was a supervisor custodian at the Larned State Hospital.

She was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing on her computer watching the monkeys and sewing. She was especially proud of Lucas and his woodworking; Viktor and Jayde for becoming great parents to her great grandkids and always enjoyed spending time with Coltin.

On November 3, 1968 she married Keith W. Robinson in Commerce City, Colorado. He survives.

Buhrer (Davidson) Miller. A longtime area resident; she was a supervisor custodian at the Larned State Hospital.She was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing on her computer watching the monkeys and sewing. She was especially proud of Lucas and his woodworking; Viktor and Jayde for becoming great parents to her great grandkids and always enjoyed spending time with Coltin.On November 3, 1968 she married Keith W. Robinson in Commerce City, Colorado. Sandra Elaine Robinson

Larry Gene Schenk, 57, died October 17, 2021, at his home in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born February 10, 1964, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Donald D. “Shorty” and Karlene K. (Kraus) Schenk. Larry graduated from Great Bend High School.

A Great Bend resident, formerly of Olmitz, Larry had worked for Stoneridge Golf Course. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church of Olmitz.

He is survived by his mother, Karlene K. Schenk of Ellinwood; sister, Sheryl Hickel and husband Jim of Claflin; brother, Randy Schenk of Great Bend; and nephew, Dylan Hickel of Claflin.

He was preceded in death by his father, Shorty Schenk, and brothers, Darrell and Ronald Schenk.

A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m., Friday, October 29, 2020, at St. Ann’s Cemetery, Olmitz. Friends may sign the book now until service at the funeral home. There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

Larry Gene Schenk

Alberta Ann Mawhiney, 91, passed away on October 5, 2021, at Country Place Senior Living in Hoisington, KS. She was born on December 29, 1929, in Parsons, KS to James and Mabel (Pearce) Aldridge. She married Billy Joe (Bill) Mawhiney on March 31, 1951 in Parsons. Bill died June 5, 2021, three months after their 70th wedding anniversary.

Alberta was a resident of Hoisington since 1971 when she and Bill moved from Great Bend to purchase the V.L. Durand Insurance Agency which later became the Mawhiney Insurance Agency. Alberta was a co-owner and licensed agent of Mawhiney Insurance Agency and worked alongside Bill for many years before their retirement in 1992. Prior to that, she was the administrative assistant to the president of Barton County Community College in its early days. Before coming to central Kansas, Alberta and Bill lived in Parsons and Coffeyville, KS then Norfolk and McCook, NE. At that time she was a homemaker devoting her time and love to their four children. She took great pride in her family which grew to nine grandchildren, their spouses and then 16 great-grandchildren. She and Bill followed the activities and sports for their four in-town grandchildren and hosted many summer camp weeks for the out-of-town kids. Alberta was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hoisington. She enjoyed playing bridge, needle craftwork, reading and gardening. She and Bill traveled extensively, going to K-State games with friends, bus trips all over the US, as well as to visit family. She spoiled her family by cooking giant, hearty meals to feed all the generations. The family returning for Labor Day was an especially strong Mawhiney tradition. However, holiday or not, she created a special place that always drew her family home.

Survivors include two sons, Mark Mawhiney and wife Kim of Overland Park, and Brad Mawhiney and wife Cyndi of Gardner; two daughters, Janet Koester and husband Duane of Hoisington, and Lisa Baum and husband Bob of Great Bend; a brother, James Edward Aldridge and wife Dixie of Parsons, KS; a sister, Rosella "Rosie" Shivers of Pleasanton, CA, and; nine grandchildren, Brett Mawhiney and wife Kati, Blair Uriell and husband Brandon, Megan Bray and husband Jerron, Brian Koester and wife Brooke, Audrey Koester, Sarah Lober and husband Kyle, Allison Klingenberg and husband Grant, Amanda Malone and husband Jake, and Matt Mawhiney and wife Jaci; and 16 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; and sister Nadine Hoffman.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at First United Methodist Church in Hoisington with Reverend Chris Lehew and Chaplain Jeffrey Owen presiding. The family will receive friends prior to the service. Inurnment will follow at the Hoisington Cemetery at 1 p.m., for those wishing to attend.
