Randy Lee Boxberger, age 61, passed away on October 18, 2021, in Grapevine, Texas, from complications of COVID-19. He was born on December 19, 1959, the son of Valeria (Vicki) Boxberger and the late, Arlyn Boxberger. He is survived by his mother, Vicki of Great Bend; his wife, Cherie’ of Shady Shores, Texas; and daughters, Megan (fiancé-Ashton Kendall) of Plano, Texas and Erin of Craftsbury, Vermont.

Randy grew up in Great Bend, Kan. an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He played American Legion Baseball. As the only son, nephew, grandson he was very popular among his family members and everyone followed the rule – “No Christmas Paper”.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 20, 2021, at Fairview Cemetery in Galatia, Reverend Wayne Baldyga presiding. A reception will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Galatia. Ronald D. Arnold, 87, passed away November 15, 2021 at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned.

He was born July 14, 1934 in Sanford, the son of John F. and Edna I. Firestone Arnold.

A lifetime area resident, he worked for the City of Larned for thirty-two years, retiring as the city manager. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Great Bend, Larned Noon Lions Club, Kansas Municipal Electric Association, president of the Kansas Municipal Utilities, and a Melvin Jones Fellowship recipient. He was in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957, serving two years in Japan.

On August 17, 1957, he married Sharon Ault at Derby, she survives.

Other survivors include two sons, David (Jan) Arnold, Lenexa, Steven (Staci) Arnold, Park City; a daughter, Kay (Stephen) Schartz, Larned; three brothers, Jim Arnold, El Paso, TX, John Arnold, Larned, Larry (Earlene) Arnold, Great Bend; two sisters, Marie Walker, El Paso, TX, Ruth (Wendel) Bronson, Del Rio, TX; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Alan K. Arnold, and a sister, Barbara Manka.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, November 19, 2021 at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with Reverend Joshua Leu presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, November 18, 2021 at Beckwith Mortuary with family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Burial with military graveside rites will be in the Larned Cemetery.

Mary Ellen Meyer (&nbsp;January 2, 1934 - October 6, 2021)

Mary Ellen Meyer was born January 2, 1934 (or "1-2-3-4," as she'd like to point out), in Sterling, Kansas. She was the second child of Raymond Harold Scott and Mary Margaret (Crawford).

Mary was not born into, nor did she live in opulence. Her mother became the head of the house when Mary was ten years old, and although there was little to go around, Mary remembered fondly the glorious school clothing her mother would sew for her. She inherited her mother's gift for needle, thread, and fabric, spending many delightful hours pursuing her passion for sewing and quilting.

She had a creative spirit and loved learning. She attended grade school in Great Bend, Kansas, and graduated from high school there in 1952. For two years she attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, leaving formal education for a time to start a family. She returned to her studies in 1963, earning a bachelor's degree in education at Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. At that same university, she earned her master's in education in 1968 and went on to study literature in a graduate program at Oklahoma State University from 1970 to 1972.

She moved to the front of the classroom while in Enid, taking a position as a reading teacher at Waller Junior High, and she went on to hold many leadership posts in education. She served as the president for the Cimarron Reading Council and was an executive board member for the Oklahoma Council of Teachers, and she also served that organization as a program leader and consultant. Her work would sometimes range beyond education, including work as a community organizer in Oklahoma City, the development director for the New Mexico State Library, and the proprietor of The Roaring Mouse Cheese and Gourmet Shop in Albuquerque, NM. But she always returned to education. Before retiring Mary taught early childhood facility management at Tarrant County Community College in Texas, and later worked as disabilities coordinator for Head Start of Tarrant County and North Texas.

Mary also answered the call of global missionary work. She graduated from the Academy of the Ecumenical Institute in Chicago, which led her on an odyssey that circled the globe in 1973, making stops in Thailand, India, South Africa, Egypt, Greece, France, and England. In New Delhi, she and her group met with Mother Theresa, who encouraged them to go home and serve in their own communities, and that's exactly what Mary went on to do. She graduated from the Ecumenical Institute in 1975, and in 2010 she found time for one more global adventure when she accompanied members of Helena's St. Paul's congregation on a medical mission to Mozambique.

As with all things Mary, her family life had its share of challenge and joy. She and her first husband, Frank Cates, had three children-Jeffrey, Joe and Susan. After Frank died, Mary went on to marry the love of her life, Ross Edward Meyer, whom she had met for the first time in the sixth grade. When they found their way to each other in 1968, they began a journey that was to last 52 years. "How I love to dance with Ross!" she often exclaimed. In 1999, she and Ross moved to Montana and built their dream home: a place where Mary could quilt and garden, a place where Ross could watch the trains pass by, and a place to fellowship with their new Montana neighbors.

In their new community, Mary immediately got busy creating new friends, hosting sewing circles, planning potlucks, and, in general, teaching Montana about the blessings of southern hospitality. She quilted to her heart's content and created an amazing yard that became home for birds, butterflies, deer, and even a field mouse or two. She would regularly share wisdom in pithy but motivational ways, often saying things like, "When was the last time you did something for the first time?" or "When God closes one door, he opens another, but the hallway between the doors can be a nightmare." Often, when a friend was struggling with a dilemma, Mary would counsel that there were really only three questions to ask, "1) what's the problem? 2) whose problem is it? and 3) want can I do about it right here and right now?"

Mary was a superior chef, owning over 150 well-used cookbooks and creating masterful meals to feed both body and soul. The best recipe to ever drop from one of her well-used recipe boxes-one in her own handwriting-was the "Recipe for Happy":

3. Call a new or different person every day just because

6. Eat yogurt with fruit and chocolate chips

Mary's faith took her beyond recipes. She believed in the goodness of everybody and in the goodness and fairness of God. "If there's a litmus test for grace," she would say, "then there is no grace. There are infinite paths to Heaven." For Mary, there are no qualifications about what the New Testament teaches. It always comes down to feeding the poor, caring for the sick, visiting the prisoner, and seeking justice for all.

Mary was a devoted, enthusiastic, and committed member of the worldwide fellowship of Al-Anon and Alateen. She believed in the here and now, and that God is in every moment.

Mary passed away October 6, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Frank, her son Joe, and her grandson Nathan. She is survived by her husband Ross, her brother Bob Scott (Kay), her son Jeff, her daughter Susan Branch of Orange, California, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and four cats.

Mary Ellen Meyer

Esther Marie Karst, 99, died November 14, 2021, at Country Place Senior Living, Hoisington, Kansas. She was born November 4, 1922, in Barton County, Kansas, the daughter of Siegmund and Ida M. (Deines) Dietz. Esther graduated from Hoisington High School in 1941.

On June 8, 1941, she married Ralph L. Karst in Milberger, Kansas. Ralph was a successful grocer who owned Karst Grocery and Hardware in Galatia, Kansas, and later owned Center Street Market in Hoisington. They were married nearly 50 years. He preceded her in death on March 14, 1991. Esther was a lifelong Barton County resident, moving from Galatia to Hoisington in 1963. She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. H.K. Ritter for 20 years before retiring in 1984. Esther was a member of the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Milberger, the R.S.V.P. and the Clara Barton Hospital Auxiliary. Her last five years were spent at Country Place Senior Living in Hoisington where she was well cared for and frequently said “I’ve got it made in the shade!”

She is survived by two children; Gregory Karst of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Melinda Kershaw and husband John of Wichita; a brother, Markus Dietz and wife Caroline of McPherson; four grandchildren, Kimberly Taylor Epley of Andover, Jessica Harrison and husband John of Seattle, Washington, Sheila Heiman and husband Adam of Topeka, Sierra Karst of Omaha; seven great-grandchildren, Amber Kershaw, Emma and Jack Taylor, Kayla and Tyler Harrison, Bryce and Blake Heiman; two great-great-grandchildren, Tayton Wingelaar and Nathaniel Hernandez; daughter-in-law Joyce Duryea (Stanley) of Topeka, and many nieces and nephews who never forgot her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, son Stanley Karst, brothers Edwin and Luther Dietz, sisters Rosa Nulik, Helen Landon and Leona Kauffman, and granddaughter Amy Hoban.

Esther loved music, reading, and crossword puzzles. For many years, she and her church peers enjoyed piecing quilts for Lutheran World Relief. She valued her church community and her Hoisington friends. During WWII, she accompanied Ralph during his military training in the U.S. prior to his service in Europe, and she looked back fondly on those travels and the lifelong friends they made during that time. She was known for her sense of humor and strong spirit, and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Visitation will be Tuesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Nicholson-Ricke funeral home in Hoisington.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, November 18, 2021, at United Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Milberger, Kansas, with Pastor Randy Maki presiding. Prior to the burial service, family will greet friends at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Galatia, Kansas.

Attendees at the visitation and funeral service are asked to follow COVID-19 precautions of face coverings and social distancing. Esther Marie Karst

Eleanor Ann Bell, age 88, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2021 at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. She was born on December 24, 1932 in Lincoln, Kansas to Melvin and Marie Clark. She was united in marriage to Jack E. Bell in August 1954. He died on August 22, 1997.

Eleanor attended high school in Independence, Kansas. She went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from Kansas State University in 1954 and continued to receive a Master's degree in education from the University of Missouri. She taught at Scott City Elementary School, Selden High School, Claflin Schools, Barton County Community College, and the Great Bend Middle School.

Eleanor had been a resident of Great Bend since 1973, after moving from St. Louis. She was a member of the Great Bend Panhellenic, Chi Omega sorority, Chapter DU of PEO, Concord Investment Club, Monday Book Club, First United Methodist Church, Creatures of Habit choral group, Lifetime Member of the Kansas State University Alumni Association, and also a member of the Kansas State University President’s Club. Eleanor loved to travel, cook, read and be with family.

She is survived by her children, DeLayne Ewing (Doug) and Spencer Bell (Vija); her grandchildren, Evan Ewing (Lindsey), Lauren Ewing (Matt) and Preston Bell. Amber Dawn Wilson, 42, passed away November 8, 2021, at her home in Great Bend. She was born October 24, 1979, at Enid, Okla. to Gene &amp; Jana Sue (Chance) Wilson.

A Great Bend resident for the last several years, Amber worked for Wendy's. She enjoyed coloring and drawing but was also known to write poetry and bible verses. Amber was known for her love of perfumes and fragrances and you could always tell when she walked into the room. She loved spending time with her family, especially her nieces and nephews whom she adored dearly.

Survivors include her father, Gene Wilson of Newkirk, Okla.; three sisters, Kristy Blazek (Eric) of Hoisington, Tonya Wilson (Gregg Adamson) of Enid, Okla., and Tori Smock (Garrett) of Springfield, Mo.; her nieces and nephews, Kelsea Wagner, Karissa Wagner, Kaleb Blazek, Jynna Adamson, Kyler Adamson, Mando Smock, Raiden Smock and Olive Smock; five great-nieces and nephews; and longtime companion, Pete Brown. Jerry Lee Becker, 81, passed away on November 6, 2021, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. Jerry was a private pilot, salesman, businessman, boating enthusiast, and devoted family man. Jerry was born September 26, 1940 in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Elmer and Bernice Becker. Entering adolescence in the 1950s, he was a mischievous teenager, frequently drag racing the streets and highways of Barton County, much to the chagrin of his paternal grandfather Lou Becker, who was sheriff at the time. Looking back years later, Jerry’s only regret was that he didn’t keep that 1957 Chevy. Jerry met the love of his life, Janice Margaret Keller (Becker) during high school band class. With Jan sitting in front of him, he would “accidentally” tap her with the end of his trombone. Thus began a courtship that would lead to nearly sixty years of marriage. The two obviously adored each other, which could easily be seen just by the way they looked at one another. Their storybook marriage, romance and love began with a beautiful wedding at St. Frances Xavier Church in Seward, Ks on June 10, 1961. Their marriage was blessed by God with four children: Bradley James, Gregory Lee, Diane Marie and Michael Jon. Thirteen grandchildren: Luke, Ryan, Zachary, Jordyn, Lindsey, Malorie, Natalie, Matthew, Haley, Jace, Cole, Cannon and Ainsleigh. Two step-grandchildren Dylan and Natalie. Five great-grandchildren: Wesley, Grayson, Claire, Connor and Ellie. For years, the couple owned a boat and hosted events for family at the lake nearly every weekend of the summers. They taught their children and grandchildren how to waterski. Not satisfied to be confined to the earth, Jerry obtained his private pilot’s license and owned a small plane. He took his family and friends on their first of what would be many airplanes rides. He had a lifelong love of cars, boats, planes, and pretty much anything that went fast and had a big engine. As such, he was a frequent attendee at car shows and air shows. Jerry and Jan took some of their greatest enjoyment in life from spending time with their children and grandchildren. His children were lucky to be spoiled with big birthday and holiday celebrations. This would include lakes, sandpits, pools (some of which were aka horse tanks), horses, dogs, cats, hamsters, motorcycles, boats, airplanes and cool cars when his children were old enough to drive. He literally had enough bicycles in his garage so that every grandchild would have one to ride. He installed a pool, owned video game systems, and even set up rope swings and treehouses in his yard for the grandchildren to enjoy. This resulted in lifelong smiles and feelings of happiness for the whole family and those lucky enough to be invited to Becker family gatherings. Jerry and Jan generously volunteered their time and resources both serving as President and on the board of directors of the Argonne Rebels Inc. a not-for-profit organization. He was very proud of granddaughter Jordyn Kennedy when she took on a leadership position with the Argonne cheer team. Jerry and Jan adopted and loved all the kids that participated in the decades of color guards and marching corps of 1977 to 1984. They were extremely proud of and loved all their drum corps and color guard children. He always made sure that lots of hours of practice were rewarded with something fun. Having marched in the Argonne Rebels Horn Line in his youth and getting to enjoy the thrill of traveling to the VFW Drum Corps Championships in Boston, convinced Jerry of the importance of the Argonne Rebels organization and its positive impact on Barton County’s youth. Jerry also was elected and served on the school board for USD 428 School District. Jerry and Jan were first and foremost believers in the power and saving grace of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Dad was raised in the Methodist church and joined mom in the Catholic church at marriage. During their lifetime they were members of St Rose, St Patrick’s and Holy Cross Churches. Dad was a eucharistic minister and lector at St. Rose and St. Patricks. Both Dad and Mom were active as youth ministers at the house of faith charismatic Catholic movement in Great Bend. They were both active in the St. Rose scouting troop and very proud of their grandson Jace and Cole being in Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts. Cole achieved Life Scout and Jace the coveted Eagle Scout.

Jerry’s (with Jan often working beside him) business ventures included Becker Homes and Campers (the 2nd Largest Volume Holiday Rambler Dealer West of Mississippi) and then Kansas Kamper Center, and Becker Tire of Hoisington. His final two with his sons Greg and Mike, Becker Homes and VR Business Brokers of southwest Missouri (managing the very successful fourth Becker Homes location in Hutchinson and helped found the VR Business Brokerage office in 2012 that finished as top ten VR business brokerage office in the world). When Jan went back to school in her forties to become an elementary school teacher, Jerry was fully behind her educational journey and even gifted her a new car for graduation. Jerry proudly served in the US Army Reserve, Air National Guard and US Airforce Reserve. He was an entrepreneur and best of the best salesman. Sadly, in their twilight years, Jan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. For over a decade, Jerry selflessly acted as the caretaker for his beloved wife as she slowly deteriorated. She passed away in April this year, just a month short of the couple’s 60th wedding anniversary. Love for family endures everything, even the death of his soulmate. Jerry was a fighter and was never one to give up and wanted very badly to get back to being independent so he could go visit all his children and grandchildren. He was so proud of his progress in rehab and general improvement with his heart and kidneys. He very much wanted to catch up with all that he missed with his family during mom’s sickness. God always has a wiser, better plan than even the best intended ones and He called Jerry home to be with his heavenly wife and family.

On Nov 6 at 6:49 AM, Jan and all of Jerry’s family and friends joyously welcomed Jerry Lee Becker to Heaven. Ironically, his Grandson Cole’s confirmation (Received Holy Spirit) was that day too. Anyone who knew my Mom and Dad’s love for the Holy Spirit smiled at what they knew was no mere coincidence. It was definitely a life well-lived. Jerry is survived by his uncle and aunt Larry and Joy Becker. His brother and sister-in-law Ron and Helen Becker. His sons, son-in-law and daughter-in-law: Brad and Sandra Becker, Diane and Travis Grigg, Michael Jon Becker and Gregory Lee Becker and his thirteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two grandchildren in law.

Roger Duane Stremel, 83, died November 10 at his home. He was born April 13, 1938, in Hutchinson, KS to Jerome F. and Maxine (Griffin) Stremel.

Roger graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1956. He earned his associate's degree from Hutchinson Community College in 1958 and then earned a bachelor's degree from Emporia State Teachers College in 1962. Roger married Janis Libby on February 28, 1959 in Hutchinson. He began his 38-year teaching and coaching career at Ellinwood High School where he taught math and coached football and track. He also attended Colorado State University and earned his master's degree, attending on a National Science Grant.

Roger loved the outdoors and spent many years hunting, fishing and playing golf. With his wife Jan of 62 years, they traveled the world for over 30 years taking 93 trips to six continents, 35 countries, all 50 states, and all 30 MLB ballparks where they loved to spend time with travel companions they met over the years. Roger served on the Ellinwood City Council, Ellinwood Library Board, and the election board. Roger was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1187 and Grove Park Golf Club. He was a devoted husband, a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Donald Dean Schoonover, 79, passed away at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS on the morning of Saturday, November 6, 2021.

Don was born in Dodge City, KS on October 22, 1942, the first of four children to Homer and Lavergne (Ingels) Schoonover, of Kingsdown, KS. He graduated from Ford High School, Ford, KS in 1960. While in school, Don was a varsity letterman in football, basketball, and track. After graduating high school, he went on to study architecture at Kansas State University, graduating with a degree in Business in 1965.

After graduation, he joined the Marine Corps Reserve (Electronics Maintenance Company Maintenance Battalion 4th Marine Division) and attended basic training at Camp Pendleton, CA. Don began his career in the aerospace industry with the Boeing Company in Wichita and later in Seattle, WA where he met Mary Catharine (Cathy) Park. They were married at Eastminister Presbyterian Church in Wichita, KS.

Don and Cathy lived in Arlington, TX and Woodbridge, VA before returning home to Kansas to be closer to family. In 1978, Don moved to Larned, KS where he formed the irrigation company, Ag Systems, Inc. with his brother Kent, serving farmers throughout western Kansas for nearly 40 years.

Growing up on a farm, Don valued honesty, integrity, hard work, and most of all he loved people. When not at “the shop”, Don loved spending time with his four children and six grandchildren, whether on yearly snowmobiling trips to Colorado, cheering on his K-State Wildcats, or going to see his grandkids’ sporting events. Don and Cathy loved spending time with their three dogs and working on the house, stopping only to enjoy the occasional margarita together.

Don and Cathy had four children, David of Larned, Michelle (Mike) Daniel of Great Bend, Ashley (Scott) Taylor of Dodge City, and Jason of Nashville, TN along with six grandchildren, Dylan Kent, Michael Warren, Brady and Laura Daniel, and Dawson and Addisyn Taylor. Don is survived by his brother Kent (Robyn) of Littleton, CO, sister-in-law, Leslie Schoonover of Dodge City, and brother-in-law, Alan Steele of Ford. Matthew R. Morgenstern, 46, died November 8, 2021, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born November 14, 1974, in Wichita, Kansas, the son of Robert and Janice E. (Smith) Morgenstern. Matt graduated from Hoisington High School in 1993 and then attended Fort Hays State College.

A lifetime Hoisington resident he worked for FIS, a partner of Cuna. Matt was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council #1521. Matt enjoyed helping on the farm particularly during harvest. He was an avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, kayaking, and camping. He also loved playing cards and attending sporting events, but most especially spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his parents, Bob and Jan Morgenstern of Hoisington; two sisters, Crista Robinson and Karla Wilkens and husband Jake, all of Hoisington; he was especially proud of his nephews and niece, Xavier, Chase, Legend, and Jason Robinson and Kinley and Adler Wilkens; and so many much-loved aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, LeRoy and Loretta Morgenstern and Robert “Bob” &amp; Margaret Smith.

Nancy Marie Brady, 66, passed away November 8, 2021, at Diversicare of Larned. She was born on July 24, 1955, at Great Bend, to Alvin &amp; Janet (Read) Schettler. She married Dale Brady on April 27, 1974, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend.

A lifetime Rush County resident, Nancy was a devoted wife, mother and grandma. She had been a social worker for SWKAAA for 17 years, retiring in 2015. Previous to that, she served as a social worker for hospice and worked at Barton County Community College. Nancy was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Albert. Having a servant’s heart, she volunteered at the Barton County Food Bank and the Dream Center Soup Kitchen. She enjoyed playing Bingo, doing yardwork, holidays with family, and above all, time with her grandkids.

Survivors include her husband, Dale Brady of the home; two daughters, Brandy Maneth and husband Mike of Albert, and Kimberly Duran and husband Paul of Texas; two brothers, Mike Schettler and wife Terri of Great Bend, and David Schettler and wife Nola of Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren, Bryce Maneth, Kolton Maneth, Hanna Duran and Brady Duran; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Lee and Jane Brady of Albert; brother-in-law, Charlie McClure; and several nieces and nephews. Nancy was preceded in passing by a sister-in-law, Arlene McClure.

John Wayne Akard, 80, passed away November 6, 2021, at his home in Great Bend. He was born on March 2, 1941, at Delta County, Texas, to Wayne &amp; Daisy (Simpson) Akard. He married Linda Mudgett on December 27, 1968, at Mesquite, Tex.

A resident of Great Bend for the last 9 years, John was formerly of Arthur City, Tex. and Foley, Mo. He was a Pastor for Bible Holiness Church. He loved performing God's work and his children.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Akard of the home; a son, David Akard of Great Bend; two daughters, Christy Romero and husband Aaron of Cimarron, and Angela Gordon and husband Curtis of Wichita; a brother, Jerry Akard of Paris, Tex.; a sister, Dot Dankowski and husband Herb of Paris, Tex.; five grandchildren, Erica McEnulty, Caleb Romero, Travis Gordon, Corey Gordon, and Eric Gordon; and one great-grandson, Grayson Forrest. Lawrence Wayne “Butch” Jackson, 77, passed away on November 5, 2021, at home in Great Bend, Kansas.

He was born July 22, 1944 at West, Texas to Oliver Glenn &amp; Frances Lucille (Colgin) Jackson. He married Mary Graves on January 6, 1984 at Great Bend, Kansas.

Mr. Jackson was a Great Bend, Kansas resident. He worked for Cessna in his younger years, Godsey Ehrlacher, and American Energies for 20 years, retiring from the role of production superintendent in 2014. He also worked in various other companies in the same capacity.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jackson, of the home; a son, Miles Jackson, of Great Bend; two daughters, Kristin (Andrew) Harris of Wichita, Jenny (Sean) Hughes of Hutchinson; one brother, Dennis (Diane) Jackson of Ellinwood; two grandchildren, Dakota Hughes, Brady Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandchild, Wyatt Hughes.

No visitation will take place as cremation has occurred. Memorial service is pending for a later date with Bryant Funeral Home.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Hector before going to work in the oil and gas industry. He was proud to have worked for 41 years for Lario Oil &amp; Gas.

He married Mary (Habiger) Hill Sept. 11, 1950, at Holyrood, Kansas. Bill and Mary lived in Ellinwood for many years before moving to rural Ellis County, Kansas, in 1978. They moved to Great Bend in 1989. Bill was a scout troop leader in Ellinwood, accompanying the scouts to Camp Kansa, Philmont Scout Ranch and on many other trips. Bill took pride in his family and always stressed to them the importance of education. He enjoyed being outdoors, especially fishing and birdwatching.

He is survived by three sons and their families, Dr. Lary M. and Diane Hill, Andover; Mark D. Hill and Scarlett Hill, Oakley; Kevin L. Hill and Teresa, Cedar Point; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, Sarah, Chris and Calvin Green, Wichita; Clayton, Carly, Dason, Kyler and Braxton Hill, Seneca; Kathryn Hill and Richard Pund, Overland Park; Shea Hill, Oakley; Cori, Cody, Tait, Maycee, Lakota and Hannah Younkin, Oakley; Jonathan, Amanda, Walter and Wade Hill, Spearfish, South Dakota; Dr. Nellie Hill, Manhattan; Heath Hill and Brynn, Darcy and Haidyn, Americus; and Cassidy Hill of St. George; cousin Johnny Hill and his wife Connie, Western Grove, Ark.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary Hill, aunt and uncle Gladys and Mose Hill and cousin Mozelle McBain.

Bill Hill

Geraldine E. “Jean” Moeder, 88, passed away November 7, 2021, at the University of Kansas Health Systems - Great Bend Campus. She was born November 28, 1932, in Hoisington, to Alois and Anna (Hitschmann) Reif. Jean married Richard Moeder on November 10, 1953, in Odin.

After growing up in Odin, Jean moved to Great Bend in 1950. She was a devoted wife and mother. She was also a registered nurse, working in St. Rose's surgical ward before focussing on her daughters and working with her husband Rich as bookkeeper for Rich's Electric. She was a devoted member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, a 50-year member of the Immaculate Conception Circle of the Daughters of Isabella. She was also a long-term member of the church's Altar Society, in which she coordinated funeral dinners for many years. Jean enjoyed many years of bowling in the Great Bend Women's Bowling Association, winning many league championships as well as the 1975 state singles title.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Moeder of the home; four daughters, Deb Floodman and husband Michael of Wichita, Cheri Hayes and husband Bill of New Fairfield, CT, Diane Stalcup and husband Kevin of Great Bend and Karen Williams and partner Kendal Nelson of Wichita; eight grandchildren, Kyle Gerstner and wife Allie, Abby Rickard and husband David, Macee Kelley and husband Daniel, Kelli Myers and husband Shane, Matt Stalcup and wife Andrea, Barry Stalcup and wife Daphne, Lauren Williams and Kacey Williams and partner Ryan Fletter; and 15 great-grandchildren. Eileen Fisher, age 81, entered the gates of heaven Sunday, November 7, 2021.&nbsp; She was born to Henry C. and Elsie E. (Miller) Hutchison October 7, 1940 at St. Rose Hospital, Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; She was a lifelong resident of the Ellinwood area, attended Star School, District 30 near her family home east of Ellinwood, and graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1958.

Eileen was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church, Ellinwood, where the following three important events in her life took place.&nbsp; She was baptized by Rev. Fred Kramer November 3, 1940, confirmed by Rev. Arthur F. Traugott on April 11, 1954, and united in marriage to Stephen H. Fisher June 25, 1957, with the ceremony conducted by Rev. Arthur F. Traugott.

Through the years she served St. John as a vacation Bible school and Sunday school teacher, Sunday school treasurer since 1984, congregational secretary, altar guild member, greeter, lector, newsletter editor, and financial secretary since 1986.

Eileen was a longtime typesetter for the Ellinwood Leader newspaper, advancing from the linotype method to the phototypesetter, and finally finished her newspaper career with the computer method.&nbsp; She was employed by Ellinwood USD #355 for 19 years serving as secretary at the grade school and middle/high school offices.&nbsp; She retired from the school system in 2006.

Through the years she enjoyed sewing and fashioned many of her clothes and those of her children in their younger years.&nbsp; Later she learned the art of paper quilling while spending winters in a Mission, TX RV park with her husband in their retirement years.&nbsp; Attending all the sports and academic activities of her three children, and later those of her grandchildren, was truly a highlight in her life.&nbsp; For a number of years, she served as secretary of the Cheyenne Archery Club where she and her husband were members.

Survivors include her husband, Stephen H. Fisher; two sons: Stephen L. Fisher (Kim), Wichita, KS and Scott M. Fisher (Tawnya), Overland Park, KS; one daughter: Jean R. Eileen Fisher

Sheri Anne (Sextro) Heilman was born May 31, 1964, in Harlan, Iowa to Dave and Anne (Allstot) Sextro, and passed on to be with her Lord on November 7, 2021, after battling a rare form of cancer.

Following graduation from high school, Sheri attended the University of Northern Iowa and Drake University where she achieved her Bachelors's and Masters's degrees in English and Educational Administration. While teaching and coaching in the Titonka School District, Sheri met the love of her life, Carl Heilman. On July 27, 1990, Carl and Sheri were joined in holy matrimony. Of the many things Sheri did in her life, she took most pride in being a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend and teacher.

While living in Iowa, Carl and Sheri welcomed the first of their four children, Brooke Anne Heilman, who was born June 15, 1991. A job opportunity led the Heilman family to Arizona, where they would reside for the next 10 years and would welcome their second daughter, Alissa Roi Heilman, born February 17, 1994. It was while in Arizona that Sheri made the move from classroom teacher to school principal. God’s next plan led the Heilmans from Arizona to Robinson, Illinois, where they welcomed their third child, Scott Benjamin Heilman, on October 8, 2003. It was their time in Illinois that found the Heilmans extremely busy as both Sheri and Carl filled their roles as school administrators and parents to a growing family. As was their habit, a final move to Great Bend, Kansas, brought the arrival of another baby, when Maximus Otis Heilman was born on January 8, 2008. Sheri and Carl often joked that they would need to stop moving to different states.

Left to honor Sheri’s memory are her husband, Carl; daughters, Brooke Heilman, and Alissa Buenger (Chris); and sons Scott Heilman and Maximus Heilman. Additionally are her parents Dave and Anne Sextro; two sisters, Susan Oberg (Steve), and Beth Namanny (Mike); and brother Ryan Sextro (Melanie). As well, Sheri leaves behind her mother-in-law, Marianne Vigen Stanard; a brother-in-law, Darren Vigen, and sister-in-law Darice (Vigen) Fink; five nieces, Jaime Hanson (Matthew), Taylor Namanny, Logan Namanny, Taegan Fink, and Terra Fink; three nephews, Ethan, Lincoln, and Beckett Sextro; and great-nephew, Kaden Hanson.

Those who have gone on before to make a place for Sheri include maternal grandparents, Cecil and Marcella Allstot; paternal grandparents, Frank and Lorine Sextro; Sheri’s father-in-law and partner in crime, Otis Vigen; a nephew, Chris Oberg; two uncles; and four cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 11, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m., at Encounter Church, First Assembly of God, on November 12, 2021. Cremation has already taken place and Sheri’s remains will be inurned in a burial plot at a private family service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to Scott and Max Heilman educational fund or the Central Kansas Dream Center, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Sheri Anne (Sextro) Heilman

Marla Jean Macy, 67, passed away on November 5, 2021 in Ellinwood, KS. Cancer is a thief and has taken our beloved mother and grandmother from us all way too soon. She was born to parents Herman Joseph &amp; Mary Ann (Klepper) Kowalsky on April 18, 1954 in Ellinwood, KS. A lifetime Ellinwood resident she graduated from Ellinwood High in 1972. Marla married Tom Macy on November 24, 1972 and they later divorced. She was as stoic as it gets when it came to fighting all things in life, but stood up to her cancer diagnosis and outlived it by years. Marla loved hosting her family, filling her house with laughter and games, and always wanted to be the host for her children so she could have fun too. She loved Christmas time, auctions, and antiques which she collected over the years. She always looked forward to her class reunions with the EHS Class of ‘72. She was a member of the Tuesday Morning Prayer Group, St. Joseph Church and Altar Society, Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer, and the Jaycees.

Marla was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Barbara Kowalsky, and a son, Eric Macy.

Survivors include partner of 20 years, Paul Fullbright; daughters, Dawn (Dallas) Beck, Lisa (Terry) Gross, Andrea (Josh) Sturgis, Amanda Fullbright; siblings, Gail (Ed) Geer, Gregg (Lori) Kowalsky; beloved grandchildren, Macy Fahrney, Brynlee Baker, Bryce Baker, Myles Menges, Bella Baker, Peyton Edwards, and Ruby Sturgis; great-grandchildren, Crew Lawrence and Hadley Fahrney. Blended grandchildren include Jayde Beck, Brittney Beck, Dalton Beck, Erica Gross, and Hailey Gross.

Thank you to everyone who provided transportation during radiation, meals, and prayers for Marla and her family over the past 5 years of this battle.

Marla loved hosting her family, filling her house with laughter and games, and always wanted to be the host for her children so she could have fun too. She loved Christmas time, auctions, and antiques which she collected over the years. She always looked forward to her class reunions with the EHS Class of ‘72. She was a member of the Tuesday Morning Prayer Group, St. Joseph Church and Altar Society, Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer, and the Jaycees.Marla was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Barbara Kowalsky, and a son, Eric Macy.Survivors include partner of 20 years, Paul Fullbright; daughters, Dawn (Dallas) Beck, Lisa (Terry) Gross, Andrea (Josh) Sturgis, Amanda Fullbright; siblings, Gail (Ed) Geer, Gregg (Lori) Kowalsky; beloved grandchildren, Macy Fahrney, Brynlee Baker, Bryce Baker, Myles Menges, Bella Baker, Peyton Edwards, and Ruby Sturgis; great-grandchildren, Crew Lawrence and Hadley Fahrney. Eunice L. North, 97, McCracken, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society, Ellis, Kansas.

Mrs. North was born January 28, 1924, in rural Rush County, Kansas, the daughter of Chess and Maggie (Hayes) Irvin.&nbsp; She was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas.&nbsp; Eunice was a homemaker and farm wife.&nbsp; She worked on the farm alongside her husband, Albert, whether that be working in the fields, running parts, or any of the other many chores she “volunteered” for.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was a member of the EUB Church, which later became the United Methodist Church, McCracken, Kansas.&nbsp; She served as the church Sunday School Treasurer for many years.

On May 18, 1941, she married Albert L. North at Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on January 22, 1994.

Survivors include two sons, Arlyn North (Jan), McCracken, Kansas, and Daryl North, Hays, Kansas; two daughters, Jolene Showalter (Jesse), Bloomington, Illinois, and Janice Basgall, McCracken, Kansas; 14 grandchildren, Jacque Showalter Sparrow, Julie Showalter Stull (Craig), Jeffrey Showalter (Karen), Laura North Martin (Ronn), Heath North (Paula), Ted North (Shawna), Tricia North, Adam North (Jami), Travis North (Ava), Cindy North Zadina (Chris), Joshua North (Kayla), Dane Basgall (Janae), Danae Basgall Younger (Chris), and Dylan Basgall (Rachel); 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Paul North; an infant daughter, Joan North; one grandson, Arthur North; one great-grandson, Cory Stull; two brothers, Williard Irvin and Chester Irvin; and one sister, Clara Daniel.

Peggy Alice Martin, 85, passed away November 6, 2021 at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned.

She was born August, 21, 1936 in Larned, the daughter of Merne F. and Lola Belle Hager Robinson.

A lifetime area resident she was a cook and waitress. She enjoyed watching westerns on tv and loved her family.

She married Clifford Martin and he preceded her in death on August 4, 1986.

Survivors include one sister, Betty Ann Dotson, Rose Hill; three brothers, Robert (Mary) Robinson, Wray, CO, Elvin Robinson, Springfield, MO, Keith Robinson, Larned; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four sisters, Bessie Mae Mantz, Dorothy Irene Boltman, Ruby Louise Stevens, Donna Belle Burns; three brothers, Ervin Robinson, Jim Robinson, and Elroy Robinson.

Dorothy “Dee” D. White, 85, passed away November 4, 2021 at her home in Jetmore.

She was born June 29, 1936 in Englewood, KS, the daughter of Frederic Solomon and Mary Henrietta Klotz Ward. A lifetime area resident, she was retired from Venture Corporation after many years.

She was of the Christian faith and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Gold Wing Riders Association.

On April 3, 1954, she married Harley “Gene” White in Granby, MO. He passed away on January 2, 1999.

Survivors include three sons, David (Audrey) White, South Haven, KS, Rick (Nancy) White, Bakersfield, CA, Ron (Ronda) White, Jetmore, KS; daughter, Dorothy “Dot” (William) Fernandez, Lawrence, KS; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Miran “Sonny” Ward; six sisters, Katy Jones, Ellen Sherrill, Vona Bedell, Freda Lynn, Lois Jackson and Lucy Green.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at United Presbyterian Church, Jetmore, with Rev. Mark Durham presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Beckwith Funeral Home, Jetmore. Burial will be in the Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore.

Grumbein Appel. Robyn was friendly and full of energy. She would greet you with a hug, kiss, and pat! She loved babies, animals, (although all animals were “cats”) her stuffed animals, helping in the kitchen and going for car rides. She liked to laugh, be the center of attention and would get very excited about special occasions, especially if it was centered around her.Robyn was mostly non-verbal and used sign language often to communicate.
