Molly Anne Brenner, age 24, passed away Friday afternoon, October 14,
 2022, at the University of Colorado Health Aurora Campus, Aurora, 
Colorado.

She was born March 29, 1998, at Liberal, Kansas, the daughter of 
Mitch and Cindy (Cordes) Brenner.&nbsp; As a young girl, she attended school 
in Meade, graduating from Meade High School in 2016.&nbsp; During her school 
years, Molly was involved in competitive dance&nbsp;and tumbling.&nbsp; She was 
also an active participant in several other activities including a 
member of the Meade High School golf&nbsp;team, Kayettes and cheerleading.&nbsp; 
After her graduation, she attended the Kansas School of the Blind, 
graduating in 2018.

She was a member of Saint John Lutheran Church, LYF, and Our Diamond 
Miss pageant system.&nbsp; She enjoyed shopping--always the fashionista, 
going to the lake and swimming, desserts, chocolate in particular, and 
spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her parents, Mitch and Cindy Brenner of Meade, 
Kansas; a brother, Mason Brenner of Meade; her maternal grandmother, 
Carol Cordes of Meade; her paternal grandmother, Kathleen Brenner of 
Hays, Kansas; her 'big sisters' Megan and Ashley and several aunts, 
uncles, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Larry Cordes; 
paternal grandfathers, Kent Amerine and Larry Brenner; and an uncle, 
Matt Cordes.

A celebration of Molly’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, 
October 22, 2022, at the Meade High School Auditorium. Friends may call 
from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 21, 2022, at 
Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade with the family present to receive 
friends. Private family interment will be held at a later date.

The family would welcome memorials to the Heathers Camp or the Meade High School Golf Team in care of the funeral home.

April Ann Ulrich, 54, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, October 14,
 2022, at the Hays Medical Center Emergency Room in Hays, Kansas. April 
gained her heavenly wings surrounded by her family, after a courageous 
battle with Pancreatic cancer.&nbsp;

April was born on April 6, 1968, in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of
 Richard Wayne and Mary Ann (Deines) Hogan.&nbsp; She grew up in Russell, 
Kansas, and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1986.&nbsp; 
After high school, she graduated from Ft. Hays State University with a 
bachelor’s degree in business.&nbsp; She met, fell in love and was united in 
marriage to Wayne Doug Ulrich Jr. on August 24, 2001, in Russell, 
Kansas.&nbsp; She worked for many years as a legal assistant for the Mark 
Blehm Law Office in Russell.&nbsp; She was a longtime member of St. John 
Lutheran Church in Russell.&nbsp; She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, 
animals, puzzles and watching her daughter Josalyn compete in rodeos.&nbsp; 
Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and especially 
enjoyed being grandma to her six grandchildren. She always had a 
welcoming smile, hugs and warm food to any friends that her daughters 
brought home. She was “Mama Ape” to many.&nbsp;

Surviving family include her husband Doug of the home; daughters 
Brittney Mayberry (Jason) of Hays, Kansas, Brooklyn Harders (Zach) of 
Russell, Kansas and Josalyn Ulrich (Blade Overturf) of Russell, Kansas;

August R. Zordel was born March 1, 1941, in Ransom, KS at Grisell 
Memorial Hospital and he gained his wings on October 12, 2022, at the 
age of 81 years 7 months at Grisell Memorial Hospital.

August was the 9th child of Walter &amp; Josie 
(Clodfelter) Zordel. He was baptized in Christ on June 19, 1955, in the 
Church of Christ at Ransom, Kansas.

August grew up on the family farm Northeast of Ransom. He attended Cyrus School through the 4th
 grade, then transferred to the Ransom school district where he 
graduated in May 1960. As a freshman the family moved to the farm West 
of Ransom.

In the fall of 1960, he enlisted in the United States Army. He did 
his basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas. He was then sent to Aberdeen 
Maryland for more training. After training he was stationed at Fort 
Bliss, Texas where he remained until he was honorably discharged in 
January of 1964.

After returning home he worked for several farmers in the Ransom area.

On May 26, 1964, he was united in marriage to Susan Stull. They 
started their married life living in the apartment above the drug store,
 then moved to a small house North of the hospital where they welcomed 
their first child Elaine Kay on September 17, 1965.

In January of 1966 the family moved to Dodge City where August worked for High Plains Dressed Beef.

In September of 1966 the family moved to the Moris Herl Ranch South 
of Quinter where they spent 13 wonderful years. During this time, they 
welcomed their second child Nolan Andrew on January 15, 1969.

On the 1st of August 1979, August took a job with USD 302 
as a custodian and the family returned to Ness County living East of 
Brownell where on November 16, 1979, their 3rd child Anita Jo
 was born. The family moved to their current home in Ransom in September
 1980. On August 23, 1983, they completed their family by adding David 
Wyatt.

After back surgery, August retired in 2000 with 21 years of service to USD 302.

After retiring, he spent a few years helping Rod Giess on his farm.

After having some health issues, he was forced to completely retire 
spending his remaining years at home doing his hobbies such as 
gardening, woodworking and other crafts and hobbies.

August is survived by his wife of 58 plus years Susan (Stull) Zordel.
 Children Elaine (Kenny) Flax, Gove, KS, Nolan (Jill) Zordel, LaCrosse, 
KS, Anita Jo (Kevin Schaffer) Shepard, Bison, KS and David Zordel, 
Independence, MO. 12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 1 great, 
great grandchild due in April. Brother Albert (Louise) Zordel, Ransom 
and sister Dollie Jean (Clarence) Shoupe, Seeley Lake, MT. Brother 
in-law Ron (Jan) Stull, Ford, KS and a host of nieces and nephews.

August was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Josie Zordel 
and Ron and Thais Stull. Brothers Walter Jr, Roy and an infant brother. 
Sisters Anna Nora, Wanda Joy, Lila Marie and Ida Mae. Brother and sister
 in-laws Clyde Hazen, Bill Freeman, Arthur Nixon, Elmer Reeder, Wilbur 
Decker, Wilma Zordel, Esther Zordel and Lois Stull. Son in-law Lance 
Shepard and great grandsons Takoda Schurr and Kyler Petersen.

There will be a graveside service on November 21, 2022, 11:00 a.m. at the Ransom Cemetery.

Matthew Lee Montgomery, 43, passed away October 13, 2022 in Larned.

He was born May 17, 1979 in Fort Knox, Kentucky, the son of Matthew and Therese Hardin Montgomery.

Moving from Hays, he was a Larned resident. He worked as a materials handler for EnerSys, was of the Druid faith, and was a minister. He enjoyed medieval weaponry, live sword fighting, Dungeons and Dragons, and was a Dungeon Master. He loved spending time with his family and friends and especially loved spending time with his children.

On September 18, 1999, he married Cristy Taylor, and they later divorced. On July 20, 2019, he married Kayla Ann Ansberry Jones at Camp Pawnee, Pawnee County, Kansas; she survives.

Other survivors include: his parents; mother and father-in-law, Gary and Rita Ansberry, Larned; two sons, Merrick Montgomery, Kentucky, Hunter Montgomery, of the home; three daughters, Lillian Montgomery, Delilah Montgomery, Genevieve Montgomery, all of the home; three sisters, Christina Sunshine Melder, Tennessee, Maria Montgomery, Georgia, and Dawn Green, Morgantown, Indiana.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life visitation will be Friday, October 21, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned.

Fred Robert Jennings, 81, passed away October 13, 2022 at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

He was born February 12, 1941 in Larned, the son of Melvin and Roberta Gibson Jennings.

A lifetime area resident, he worked for the City of Larned as the electrical production superintendent. He was a graduate of Rozel High School, a member of Larned United Methodist Church and Methodist Men’s Group. He was a multi-talented handyman of many trades; he had a passion for preserving the history of farm equipment and to this end he built one-sixth scale working antique farm implements.

On June 4, 1961 he married Judith A. Fox at Larned; she survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Mike (Andrea) Jennings, Great Bend, Philip (Tammy) Jennings, Belpre; brother, Leon Jennings, Burdett; two sisters, Linda Maddy, Larned, Cheryll (Kenneth) Meier, LaCrosse; three grandchildren, Brittany (Tayler) Jennings, Larned, Mitch Jennings, Larned, Ian Jennings, Great Bend, and one great grandchild, Lane Jennings.

Brian Eugene Boy, 52, passed away October 12, 2022, in Great Bend. He was born April 22, 1970, in Sterling, Kan. to Lawrence and Frances (Fisher) Boy. He married Stacey Creed October 12, 1996, in Ellinwood.

A longtime area resident, Brian was a farmer and truck driver for Steve Gaunt Farms. He enjoyed playing bingo, watching Barton Community College sports, fishing and going to rodeos.

Survivors include, his wife, Stacey Boy and children, Jordan Boy and Marissa Boy all of the home; a brother, Gary Boy of Wichita; and three sisters, Janet Hutchinson, Carolyn Valenzuela and Anna Boy all of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents..

Rita was born on November 18, 1961, to Herbert Edward Kerr and Lynda Lou (Walls) Kerr. At 10 years old, she was adopted by her stepfather, Thomas R. Weber. She arrived in Great Bend from her hometown of Wichita Falls, Tex. in 1988. She stayed in Great Bend until 1992, when she finished her education to become a Registered Nurse. On October 3, 1992, she married the love of her life, Bradley Ray Scheideman in Wichita, Kan. In 1994, two important events happened for Rita: she moved back to Great Bend, where she would spend the rest of her life, and Bradley adopted her three children, David Ray, Christopher Lee and Shannon Diane. She was proud of the adults their kids grew up to be.

Rita worked as a Registered Nurse in and around Great Bend for around 25 years.

She is survived by her husband, Bradley Ray Scheideman of Great Bend; sons, David Ray Scheideman of Reno, Nev., and Christopher Lee Scheideman and wife, Amber, of Great Bend; daughter, Shannon Diane Unruh and husband, Grant, of Great Bend; grandchildren, Emily Scheideman, Hailey Peterson, Aaron Scheideman, Kendra Scheideman, Gage Peterson and Kaylee Scheideman; sisters, Robin Weber of Dallas, Tex., and Betty Ham of Wichita Falls, Tex.; brother, Larry E. Weber of Bishop, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lynda Lou Weber; biological father, Herbert E. Kerr; adoptive father, Thomas R. Weber; father-in-law, Clair “Ray” Scheideman; and sister-in-law, Brenda Mason.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 21, 2021, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend, with Barbara Gutsch presiding. Memorials have been designated to the Shafer Art Gallery, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Rita Scheideman, age 60

Georgiana Magdalen Herrman, 84, passed away Oct. 8, 2022, at Lamar Court Assisted Living, Overland Park. She was born on Feb. 2, 1938, in rural Rush County, to Isidore and Albertina (Legleiter) Herrman. She married Francis A. Herrman on Aug. 24, 1956, at Liebenthal. He died Jan. 22, 1990.

A Great Bend resident for over 60 years, Georgiana recently moved to Overland Park. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was an avid reader and was always up to date on current news and events. Georgiana enjoyed traveling with her children in her later years. She loved playing bingo, Scrabble, cards, and board games while spending time with her family.

Survivors include her children, Karen Knowles and husband Joe (Arvada, Colo.), Dana Konda and husband Virgil (Spearville), Floyd Herrman and wife Susie (Overland Park), Patricia “Trish” Miller (Wichita), Janet Mullins and husband John III (Dripping Springs, Texas) and Michelle Haetten and husband Todd (West Melbourne, Flo.); a brother, William “Bill” Herrman and wife Lucy (LaCrosse), a sister, Mary Catherine Dreher (Plainville); seven grandchildren, Cade Olson, April Crockett, Matt Konda, John Mullins IV, Marissa Mullins, Korynn Haetten, Caleigh Haetten and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her ex-husband, Francis A. Herrman; a son, Dennis Herrman; a brother, Mike Herrman; and three sisters, Viola Depperschmidt, Lillian Leiker and Henrietta Haselhorst.

Georgiana Herrman, age 84

Eleanor Ann Dailey, passed away Thursday, February 25, 2021, at Medicalodges of Great Bend. She was born September 4, 1940, in Great Bend, the daughter of John and Edith Ann (Kummer) Dailey.

Eleanor has been a lifelong resident of Great Bend. She graduated Great Bend High School with the Class of 1958. She was a beautician for thirty five years and a PBX clerk for CKMC for forty years. Eleanor was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and the altar society.

Survivors include a brother, Richard “Dick” Dailey of Great Bend; nineteen nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, James Dailey, Jerry Dailey, William Dailey, Jack Dailey, Jr., and Donald “Dee” Dailey; five sisters, Janiece Burke, Dorthea Hershey, Peggy Dailey, Patricia Dillard and Gwen Bible; and a nephew, John Dailey.

Eleanor Dailey, age 81

Roland Eugene Nuss, 77, of Hutchinson, died October 12, 2022, at his 
home. He was born June 29, 1945, in St. Joseph, MO, to Roland B. and 
Henrietta L. (Gagelman) Nuss.

Roland graduated from Great Bend High School in 1963 and received his
 bachelors in Business from Fort Hays State University in 1967. Roland 
worked as a buyer for Dillons, supervisor for Kwik Shop, and in sales at
 Collins Bus and Cabinet Connections. He loved the mountains, his 
Tuesday morning coffee group, Tuesday night tennis group, watching 
sports of all kinds – especially K-State and Salthawk sports - with 
Rita, and spending time with his family most of all. Roland was a 
long-time devoted member of Eastwood Church of Christ where he had 
served as a deacon.

On June 5, 1971, Roland married Rita K. Woods, in Dodge City. She survives.

Also surviving are: his daughters, Melissa Thorne (Gavin) of Windsor,
 CO, Jennifer Farr (Jamie) of Junction City; and grandchildren, Grady 
and Kinley Thorne and Mason and Colin Farr.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, October 17, 2022, at Eastwood
 Church of Christ, 2500 N. Plum St., Hutchinson, with ministers Wayne 
DeWindt and Jimie-Wray Mead officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to
 5 p.m. Saturday and 1-8 p.m., with the family present to receive 
friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.

Cremation will follow with a private family scattering in his beloved mountains at a later date.

Joel Michael Landis, age 36, passed 
away on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at his home in Leoti, Kansas.&nbsp; He was 
born on October 22, 1985, in Boulder, Colorado, the son of Christopher 
and Tamala Arnold Landis.&nbsp; 

Joel was a resident of Leoti, Kansas since 
2014 moving from Denver, Colorado and worked for Amerine Construction as
 an underground drilling operator.He was a member of the Operator Engineer Local #9 and Assembly of God Church in Leoti, Kansas. &nbsp;

Survivors include his One Son - Jayce Landis of Marysville, 
Washington, Parents - Christopher &amp; Tamala Landis of Leoti, Kansas, 
Two Brothers - Jeremy &amp; Andrea Landis of Arvada, Colorado, Anthony 
&amp; Sara Landis of Willow Springs, North Carolina, Three Grandparents -

Joel Michael Landis

Lavonne Kay Horchem, 91, died peacefully in her sleep on October 6, 
2022, at Meadowlark Senior Living in Manhattan, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on
 September 20, 1931, at home in Utica, Kansas, the daughter of Ephriam 
“Pete” Gerald and Martha Matilda (Schwindt) Bernbeck.

She graduated from Utica High School and Kansas State University.

She married Richard “Dick” Gayle Horchem on August 16, 1953, in the 
First Christian Church in Utica.&nbsp; They made their home in Ness City, 
Kansas, where they raised their three sons.

Kay taught in the Ness City School District for many years. She was 
active in various community organizations and supported numerous 
charities over the years.

Kay is survived by two sons, Brad (Cindy) Horchem, Manhattan, Kansas,
 and Todd (Brenda) Horchem, Ness City; four grandchildren, Travis 
Horchem, Newton, Kansas; Megan (George) Heyns, Kansas City, Missouri; 
Kali (Mark) Solomon, Wichita, Kansas; and Jana Horchem, Englewood, 
Colorado; and five great-grandchildren, Aiyana, Adijah, and Ajani 
Solomon and Van and Vivian Horchem.

In addition, she is survived by two sisters, Elvira Kilroy, Nokomis, 
Florida and Wanda McKenzie, Gold Canyon, Arizona; one brother, Gary 
(Anita) Bernbeck, Grand Junction, Colorado; a sister-in-law, Linda 
(Terry) Claycamp, Hays, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews. Petros 
Levis joined the family as an exchange student from Greece during his 
senior year of high school. Petros and his wife, Ann, Denver, remain a 
part of the family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Craig Horchem, and two brothers, Don Bernbeck and Gerald Bernbeck.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be 
made to the Ness County Bank Building Foundation, St. Jude Children’s 
Research Hospital or any organization of the donor’s choice. Memorials

Lavonne Kay Horchem

Jerry Lee Hanhardt was born 07/27/1942 in 
Great Bend, Kansas. He began his dance with the angel's on 10/04/2022 
with his loving family witnessing his transition. Shortly after he was 
born to Harold and LaWanda Hanhardt (Smith), Harold was called to serve 
in WWII. Jerry and his mom then went to Fox Mountain at Quemado, New 
Mexico to be with her parents, Baron and Ovadell Smith. Jerry loved to 
share stories of those days. After Harold's return, the family moved to 
Aztec.

Jerry graduated in 1961 from Aztec High. He had many friends in that 
class who are still friends to this day. Among those friends was Fran 
Trayer. In 1964 his romantic proposal to Fran (as he told it) was "We 
are the only ones left in our class who aren't married, so we should get
 hitched". She said "yes" and they spent the next 58 years together.

Jerry spent a few years as a salesman, but the majority of his career
 was in purchasing. He worked on several pipelines, power plant 
construction and finally retiring from APS (Arizona Public Service) with
 20 years of service.

Jerry was diagnosed with MS over 45 years ago, but never let that 
stop him from getting things done. The only concession he gave to the 
disease was to use a motorized wheelchair. He wanted to save his energy 
to do "other" things. He actually wore out 11 scooters and was doing a 
good number on his 12th.

Jerry was very civic minded and was always in the middle of 
something. He was instrumental in starting the Four Corners Search and 
Rescue, Four Corners Purchasing Management Association, and San Juan 
Center for Independence. He served on the State Construction Industries 
Commission and on the Governor's Commission on the Concerns for the 
Handicapped. He was elected to and served on the Aztec City Commission 
for 10 years. That position included him serving on the CRWVA and 
Northwest NM Seniors board. He was a Mason, a Shriner and member of 
Order of Eastern Star. And was EXTREMELY PROUD to be in that 
brotherhood.

He was a very humble man but took great pride in his family. The 
example he made by the way he lived his life is an inspiration to many. 
His quick wit, his commitment to anything he put his mind to, his drive 
and determination to not let anything or anyone get him down are 
demonstrated by his daughters and grandchildren. Those traits will be 
carried on by the great grandchildren Papa loved so much.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and LaWanda 
Hanhardt, his sister Karren Hodges, and his grandparents. He is survived
 by this wife Fran; daughters Jerilyn (Mickey), Julie (Jimmy), and Jodi 
(David). His brother Leon (Leanna), brother-in-law Milton "Sonny" 
(Darlene) Trayer, his 12 grandchildren and 13 ½ great grandchildren, 
numerous nieces and nephews and many, many friends.

Jerry was adamant about not wanting a funeral. He wanted us to have a
 party, so that is what we will do. Please join us at the Aztec Civic 
Center 101 South Park, Aztec NM on Saturday 10/08/2022. The celebration 
will start at 1:00pm and end around 4:00. There will be a Masonic 
service at 4:00pm.

Great Bend, Kansas. He began his dance with the angel's on 10/04/2022 
with his loving family witnessing his transition. Shortly after he was 
born to Harold and LaWanda Hanhardt (Smith), Harold was called to serve 
in WWII. Jerry and his mom then went to Fox Mountain at Quemado, New 
Mexico to be with her parents, Baron and Ovadell Smith. Jerry loved to 
share stories of those days. After Harold's return, the family moved to 
Aztec.Jerry graduated in 1961 from Aztec High. He had many friends in that 
class who are still friends to this day. Among those friends was Fran 
Trayer. In 1964 his romantic proposal to Fran (as he told it) was "We 
are the only ones left in our class who aren't married, so we should get
 hitched". She said "yes" and they spent the next 58 years together.Jerry spent a few years as a salesman, but the majority of his career
 was in purchasing. He worked on several pipelines, power plant 
construction and finally retiring from APS (Arizona Public Service) with
 20 years of service.Jerry was diagnosed with MS over 45 years ago, but never let that 
stop him from getting things done. The only concession he gave to the 
disease was to use a motorized wheelchair. He wanted to save his energy 
to do "other" things. He actually wore out 11 scooters and was doing a 
good number on his 12th.Jerry was very civic minded and was always in the middle of 
something. He was instrumental in starting the Four Corners Search and 
Rescue, Four Corners Purchasing Management Association, and San Juan 
Center for Independence. He served on the State Construction Industries

Jerry Lee Hanhardt, age 80

Donald Wayne Schlegel, 73, died Oct. 4, 2022, at his home in Otis. He was born Nov. 9, 1948, in Great Bend, the son of Samuel and Margaret (Lebsack) Schlegel. Don served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War.

A lifetime resident of Otis, Don was a farmer and a truck driver. He worked for H &amp; K Trucking, Westcott Trucking, and Old Dominion Freight Line.

On Dec. 14, 1983, he married Donna L. Moore-Evans in Otis. She preceded him in death on Jan. 4, 2009.

He is survived by his mother, Margaret Schlegel; and a sister, Connie Galusha, both of Otis; three stepsons; Gerald Evans and wife Brenda of Naperville, Ind., David Evans of New Creek, W.Va., and Steven Evans and wife Deanna of Scherr, W.Va. ; and six grandchildren, Justin and Cody Evans, Luke and Louise Evans, Deprise Evans-Hawk and husband Logan, and Desire-e Evans.

He was preceded in death by his father and a nephew, David Galusha.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday and Friday at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Lyle Knebel presiding. Burial with military honors will follow at Hoisington Cemetery.

Donald Schlegel, age 73

LaVerna Marie (Braun) Younger, 90, left
 this life on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at Locust Grove Village, 
La Crosse, Kansas, surrounded by her family.&nbsp;

LaVerna was born on March 6, 1932, in 
Hays, Kansas, to Frank J. and Helen (Brungardt) Braun.&nbsp; She was the 
second of five children raised on the Braun Dairy Farm north of Hays.&nbsp; 
One of her childhood chores was milking dairy cows before school.&nbsp; She 
often blamed her arthritic fingers on her milking cows, but she was 
especially proud of how hard her parents and her siblings worked on the 
family farm.

LaVerna attended Hays schools and 
graduated from Girls Catholic High School in 1950.&nbsp; She was employed at 
Spiess Bookkeeping Service until she married the love of her life, 
Bernard A. Younger on June 10, 1952.&nbsp; He was one of twelve children of 
Jacob and Catherine Younger, and at the time of their marriage, he was a
 member of the Signal Corps of the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort 
Polk, Louisiana.&nbsp; After serving his duty and being honorably discharged,
 Bernie and LaVerna returned to Hays in February 1953.&nbsp;

Together they owned and operated the 
Jobbership for Sunray DX Oil Co. in Hays and Russell and later started 
their own business, Younger Propane.&nbsp; She was the bookkeeper for several
 other jointly owned family businesses throughout the years including 
Younger Party Mix, BA Younger Oil, and various rental properties.

LaVerna and Bernie built their home on 
Toulon Road in 1955 and resided there throughout their 50-year 
marriage.&nbsp;&nbsp; They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary with their 
family shortly before Bernie’s passing on October 20, 2002.&nbsp; Mom spent 
the 20 years after his death missing him and continuing to love and 
honor his memory.&nbsp; She spread the love they shared with her children, 
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp; Her home was meticulous and her 
flower gardens flourished.&nbsp; Many of her friends and family wear winter 
scarves that she knitted and many of her needlepoint pictures and 
embroidered tea-towels are displayed in her children’s homes.&nbsp; LaVerna 
instilled her love of reading in her children and grandchildren.&nbsp; She 
enjoyed word search, praying her rosary, and playing Bingo, Chinese 
checkers, and pinochle.&nbsp;

LaVerna is survived by her children:&nbsp; 
Janet (Mike) McCann, Rock Springs, WY; James (Sue) Younger, Hays, KS; 
Jolene (Ken) Windholz, Hays, KS; Jeff (Karie) Younger, Olathe, KS; Joan 
(William) Steinkuhler, Battlement Mesa, CO; and Jean Younger (Scott 
Dold) Lawrence, KS.

LaVerna’s pride and joy were her 16 
grandchildren:&nbsp; Nicole (Brian) Nelson; Erin (Todd) Graham; Bridget 
(Kobe) Burraston; Adrianna Smith; Michael (Kelsi) Younger; Megan (Craig)
 Mason; Mason (Maddie) Younger; Ben (Joan) Karst; Mark (Nikki) Karst; 
Jon Karst; Clayton (Janae Levier) Karst; Kyle (Kendra) Younger; Emily 
Younger; Alexa (Chad Turek) Steinkuhler; Kennedy Dold and Crosby Dold.

While greatly enjoying the love of her 
grandchildren, LaVerna was able to meet her 23 great-grandchildren:&nbsp; 
Tyler and Hollie Nelson; Alex Graham; Syree, Bernie and Carter 
Burraston; Mallory Fallas; Jacob, Parker, Blake and Grayson Younger; 
Joslyn, Lexi and Trevor Mason; Katrina and Kailey Delimont; Hendrix and 
Jaxon Karst; Cadence and Lyric Karst; and Ava, Owen and Elsie Younger.

LaVerna is also survived by her sister:

Donald Wayne Schlegel

Brian Joseph Palen was born on December 6, 1970, to Cyril and DiAnna 
Palen.&nbsp; Brian was an adrenaline junkie from a young age.&nbsp; Whether he was
 running from the city cop on a snowmobile, or racing go-carts with his 
dad cheering him on. Brian loved being ornery and enjoyed doing pranks 
with the neighborhood kids of Tipton.&nbsp; Brian quickly moved from go-carts
 to race cars.&nbsp; He enjoyed working with his crew and loved going fast.&nbsp; 
Brian’s love for speed gave his mother anxiety.&nbsp; Surviving a wreck that 
most people wouldn’t.&nbsp; Once he decided to give up the need for speed, he
 decided to go big.&nbsp; He purchased a Peterbilt and a bull trailer.&nbsp; He 
enjoyed the long hauls and would call Melissa to keep him awake on long 
trips.&nbsp; Brain decided he wanted a change of scenery so he moved to 
Colorado.&nbsp; He was soon blessed with a beautiful daughter, Kaitlyn.&nbsp; 

He 
would always brag he was the only man that could drive an 18-wheeler and
 change a diaper at the same time.&nbsp; Brian loved building cars and 
rebuilt a '69 Camaro which he nicknamed “Purple Passion.”&nbsp; While is 
Colorado Brian’s adrenaline rush continued.&nbsp; He decided to take up bull 
riding.&nbsp; He soon realized riding wasn’t all it was cut out to be.&nbsp; He 
competed with a broken pelvis and ankle.&nbsp; Thank goodness his daughter 
convinced him to retire. After 16 years Brain decided to leave Colorado 
behind. He returned to Osborne to help care for his mother but the truth
 be told DiAnna did the caring for. After returning, Brian rekindled an 
old love with Melissa Hoffman - Lyle. They were wed in a backyard 
ceremony on August 2, 2014. Brain was a skilled leather craftsman and 
enjoyed crafting projects. He ended up turning his hobby into a 
business. Brian also had a love for fishing that he got from his dad and
 mom.

Brian had many jobs through is life from selling computers in Salina,
 rebuilding engines at R and M in Beloit. Brian was also employed with 
Osborne Industry. Brians last job at American Ag and Auto was his 
favorite. He enjoyed his time he got to work with his cousin Mike 
Becker.

Brian and Melissa shared a blended family. They are proud parents of 
Katlyn Lawrence, and Chantell Wessling. Brian was a very proud 
grandfather to Kinsley and Kamryn Lawrence and Kale and Kaden Wessling. 
His face would sparkle when he shared stories about his kids and 
grandkids.

On October 2, 2022, Brian lost his battle to an aggressive cancer that
 was only diagnosed two weeks prior. He fought a hard battle because he 
didn’t want to leave his family.

Brian is proceeded in death by his father Cyril Palen. Brian is 
survived by his wife Melissa Palen of Tipton. His mother DiAnna Palen of
 Osborne. Kaitlyn Lawrence and husband James. Their two girls Kinsley 
and Kamryn of Stephenville, Texas. Chantell Wessling and her husband 
Josh their two boys Kale and Kaden of Beloit, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at

 </figure>Brian Joseph Palen was born on December 6, 1970, to Cyril and DiAnna 
Palen.&nbsp; Brian was an adrenaline junkie from a young age.&nbsp; Whether he was
 running from the city cop on a snowmobile, or racing go-carts with his 
dad cheering him on. Brian loved being ornery and enjoyed doing pranks 
with the neighborhood kids of Tipton.&nbsp; Brian quickly moved from go-carts
 to race cars.&nbsp; He enjoyed working with his crew and loved going fast.&nbsp; 
Brian’s love for speed gave his mother anxiety.&nbsp; Surviving a wreck that 
most people wouldn’t.&nbsp; Once he decided to give up the need for speed, he
 decided to go big.&nbsp; He purchased a Peterbilt and a bull trailer.&nbsp; He 
enjoyed the long hauls and would call Melissa to keep him awake on long 
trips.&nbsp; Brain decided he wanted a change of scenery so he moved to 
Colorado.&nbsp; He was soon blessed with a beautiful daughter, Kaitlyn.&nbsp; He 
would always brag he was the only man that could drive an 18-wheeler and
 change a diaper at the same time.&nbsp; Brian loved building cars and 
rebuilt a '69 Camaro which he nicknamed “Purple Passion.”&nbsp; While is 
Colorado Brian’s adrenaline rush continued.&nbsp; He decided to take up bull 
riding.&nbsp; He soon realized riding wasn’t all it was cut out to be.&nbsp; He 
competed with a broken pelvis and ankle.&nbsp; Thank goodness his daughter 
convinced him to retire. After 16 years Brain decided to leave Colorado 
behind. He returned to Osborne to help care for his mother but the truth
 be told DiAnna did the caring for. After returning, Brian rekindled an 
old love with Melissa Hoffman - Lyle. They were wed in a backyard 
ceremony on August 2, 2014. Brain was a skilled leather craftsman and 
enjoyed crafting projects. He ended up turning his hobby into a 
business. Brian also had a love for fishing that he got from his dad and
 mom.Brian had many jobs through is life from selling computers in Salina,
 rebuilding engines at R and M in Beloit. Brian was also employed with 
Osborne Industry. Brians last job at American Ag and Auto was his 
favorite. He enjoyed his time he got to work with his cousin Mike 
Becker.Brian and Melissa shared a blended family. They are proud parents of 
Katlyn Lawrence, and Chantell Wessling. Brian was a very proud 
grandfather to Kinsley and Kamryn Lawrence and Kale and Kaden Wessling. 
His face would sparkle when he shared stories about his kids and 
grandkids.On October 2, 2022, Brian lost his battle to an aggressive cancer that
 was only diagnosed two weeks prior. He fought a hard battle because he 
didn’t want to leave his family.Brian is proceeded in death by his father Cyril Palen. Brian is 
survived by his wife Melissa Palen of Tipton. His mother DiAnna Palen of
 Osborne. Kaitlyn Lawrence and husband James. Their two girls Kinsley 
and Kamryn of Stephenville, Texas. Chantell Wessling and her husband 
Josh their two boys Kale and Kaden of Beloit, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A memorial service will take place on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at

Brian Joseph Palen

Marilyn Kay Charles passed away on October 2, 2022 in McPherson, Kansas. She was born October 23, 1946 at Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Emanuel and Elsie Funk. She was a retired teacher.

Marilyn was raised on a farm in a German community in rural Galatia, Kansas. She graduated from Fairview Rural Grade school in northern Barton County and Otis Rural High School in 1964. She was baptized and confirmed, choir member, Luther League member and a Sunday school teacher at the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Milberger, KS. She went to Wichita Business College in 1964 and obtained a Stenographic diploma which allowed her to be a secretary for 10 years at Beech and Boeing Aircraft, Paine, Webber Brokerage Co. and Barton County Community College. While working at Barton County Community College she completed an Associate's Degree in general course work. She went on to Kansas State University where she worked her way through college and received a Bachelor's Degree in Education, with an emphasis in Special Education, Mental Retardation. She completed her Education with a Master's Degree in Special Education at Fort Hays State.

On May 28, 1983 she married Richard Lynn Charles in Great Bend, Kansas. They adopted Cassie at the age of 7 in 1990. Marilyn taught for 20 years in various locations: Topeka, KS as EMH teacher; in the Interrelated Special Education Classroom at USD 428 Great Bend, KS; St. Patrick's Elementary Great Bend, KS as a 6th grade teacher; USD 431 Hoisington, KS for 16 years as a 4th grade teacher. She later went on to teach at the Adult Education Department at Barton County Community College as an ESOL instructor. She completed her teaching career by being an ESOL Director for ESSDACK/Barton Academy, Great Bend, KS.

Marilyn was a member of the Alpha Iota Honorary Business Sorority, Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Junior College Fraternity, Big Sisters and Big Brothers, Council of Exceptional Children, past president of Central Kansas Reading Association. She was an officer of Girl's Aglow Christian organization of Topeka, KS and an officer for 20 years in Women's Aglow Christian International organization of Great Bend, KS.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, KS where she taught Sunday school for many years, serving on the Educational Committee, decorating committee and many other committees. Marilyn loved floral decorating, painting, and enjoyed working with plants and flowers indoors and outdoors. She thoroughly enjoyed working with and helping educate young children and adults.

She is survived by her exhusband and best friend, Richard Charles of Lindsborg; her sister, Joetta Hendrickson of Port Angelas, Washington; her daughter, Cassie Koehn and husband Dustin Koehn, and grandchildren Cade, Matthew, Tyler, Kylie, Lakyn and Kinzie all of Newton; sister-in-law, Janet Funk of Milberger, and nephews Doug, Warren and Deric.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emanuel and Elsie Funk and brother, Wayne Funk.

There will be a Graveside Service at Milberger Cemetery, Milberger, Kansas, on Tuesday October 11th at 11am followed by a lunch at the church. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials may be donated to the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Milberger, in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, PO Box 146, Hoisington, KS 67544.

Robert M. Zimmerman, 84, passed away on Oct. 2nd, 2022 at Azria Health in Great Bend, KS. Born on March 14th, 1938 in Holyrood, KS he graduated Ellinwood High School and later served in the US Army from 1959-1962. Bob married Beverly A. Blehm in Sept. of 1956 in Ellinwood, KS she passed away on January 30, 2022. Bob worked in the oilfield at various jobs. Memberships include American Legion #320 and VFW.

Robert Zimmerman, age 84

Philip Alan Schreiber, 71, passed away September 21, 2022 at his home in Larned.

He was born February 13, 1951 in Great Bend, the son of Elmer Leon and Mildred L. Fairchild Schreiber.

A lifetime area resident, raised on a farm south of Larned, he was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned. He was an Activity Therapist at Larned State Hospital and later a Para Educator for USD 495. He enjoyed yardwork and gardening, running, attending his children and grandchildren’s activities, and spending time with family.

On December 3, 1977 he married Ann Vratil in Larned; she survives.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Stefanie (Cody) Turner, Wamego, Emily (Michael) Racette, Larned; six grandchildren, Savannah Racette, Brayson Bird, Camden Bird, Kennedy Bird, Dalton Turner, Adreana Turner; and his loyal companion, Sandy.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; step father, Bill Hanshew; brother, Eldon Schreiber; two step brothers, Dudley Hanshew, and Dean Hanshew.

Memorial mass will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 7, 2022 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned, with Father Bernard Felix presiding. Stefanie Linn Turner, 44, passed away September 27, 2022 in Wamego.

She was born July 4, 1978 in Larned, the daughter of Philip Alan and Ann Vratil Schreiber.

A Larned resident until 2001, she moved to Wamego where she was the head of the billing department at Manhattan Dermatology. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned. She was always a helper and was active in the kids wrestling club. She loved music, reading, dogs, fishing, taking pictures, being outdoors, decorating for the holidays, watching the Chiefs and all K-State sports. She especially loved watching her kids, nieces and nephews in sports and all their activites.

On October 23, 1999 she married Cody Joe Turner at Larned; he survives.

Other survivors include: mother, Ann Schreiber, Larned; children, Adreana and Dalton Turner, of the home; sister, Emily (Michael) Racette, Larned; nieces and nephews, Jocelynn, Logan, Brayson, Camden, Kennedy, Savannah; and her beloved dogs, Mocha and Ashford.

Marilyn (Klaus) Leiker, 80, Hays, died Thursday, September 29, 2022, at her home.

She was born March 14, 1942, in Hays, 
the daughter of Paul and Emmerentia (Haselhorst) Werth.&nbsp; In 1960, she 
graduated from Girls Catholic High School.&nbsp; She was the owner of Klaus 
Carpet.&nbsp; On June 2, 1962 she was united in marriage to Norman J. Klaus 
in Schoenchen, and they celebrated nearly 34 years of marriage before he
 preceded her in death on May 24, 1996.&nbsp; On June 30, 2001, she was 
united in marriage to Alexius “Alex” Leiker.&nbsp; He preceded her in death 
on February 2, 2020.&nbsp; She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic 
Church and the VFW Auxiliary.

Survivors include her two sons: Neil 
Klaus and wife Sondra of Hays and Nolan Klaus and companion Shelley of 
Olathe, four stepsons: Curt Leiker and wife Davina of Greeley, Wes 
Leiker and wife Jenni of Hays, Todd Leiker of Olathe, and Mike Leiker 
and wife Kelly of Hays, 14 grandchildren: Adam Klaus, Amber Albers and 
husband Kord, Mackenzie Klaus, Matthew Leiker, Bethany Boschert and

She was preceded in death by her

Jerry Rogers.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Monday, October 3, 2022, at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic 
Church with Fr. Damian Richards officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in St. 
Joseph Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Sunday

four sisters: Donna Jacobs and husband Ron of McCook, NE, Carolyn 
Windholz of Victoria, Joan Rogers of Ben Wheeler, TX, and Ellen 
Montgomery and husband Tom of Hays, two sisters-in-law: Lisa Werth of 
Hays and Irene Werth of Kanopolis.She was preceded in death by her 
parents, her first husband Norman and second husband Alex, two brothers:
 Gary and Firman Werth, and two brothers-in-law: Wayne Windholz and 
Jerry Rogers.Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Monday, October 3, 2022, at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic 
Church with Fr. Damian Richards officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in St. 
Joseph Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Sunday 
and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Monday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel 
Funeral Home.&nbsp; A VFW Auxiliary rosary will be at 5:30 pm followed by a 
vigil service at 6:30 all on Sunday at the funeral home.&nbsp; Memorials are 
suggested to St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church or to TMP-Marian High
