James S. Eubank, 91, passed away at Salina Regional Hospital on July 10, 2022. He was born James S. Tourtillott, Jr., in Wichita on Feb. 24, 1931, to parents James S. and Winifred I. Tourtillott. Later his paternal grandmother and her second husband, Frank Eubank, adopted him. James' mother remarried Arthur D. Branson, who later adopted his sister, Betty. His father legally changed his own name to James C. Seymour, and joined the Merchant Marines. 

In 1953, James married Susan Johnson in Winfield. They lived in Wichita for a short time, moving to Ellinwood where he went to work for Branson Trucking Service. James and Susan had three children: Christopher K., Craig A., and Kathryn E. James and Susan divorced in 1968. On July 12, 1969, James married Barbara Roy. Barbara had two children from a previous marriage, Ramona A. and Johnita J. This marriage produced another daughter, Jaimie B. 

James was formerly on the Board of Directors of the Kansas Motor Carriers Association at Topeka, representing the Oilfield and Heavy equipment Haulers Division. He was co-founder of the Ellinwood Bowling Association, serving as the first City Association secretary. He was a former member of the Ellinwood Traveling Tournament bowling team.&nbsp;He was a loving father and step-father, and husband. James had a great sense of humor and loved telling jokes and playing practical jokes.&nbsp;&nbsp;He also was a Navy Veteran. 

In 1973, James went to work for Marlette Inc. where he operated a radial drill and worked in the paint room. When Marlette closed the facility in 1980, he went to work for H-30 Inc. and became Assistant Rig Coordinator. He also managed Dakota Dirt Inc. but the oil slump of 1986 ended his oilfield career. James then went to work for Great Bend Industries as a machinist before retiring in 2001. 

He is survived by two daughters, two sons, and two step-daughters, six grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Eubank, on June 23, 2015.

Funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 18 at Minnis Chapel in Ellinwood. Visitation will take place Sunday, July 17 from noon to 4 p.m. at Minnis Chapel in Ellinwood. Interment will follow at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery in Ellinwood. Memorials are suggested to American Legion #320 in care of Minnis Chapel,&nbsp;PO Box 246, Ellinwood, KS.&nbsp;

Roger Kenneth Warner, 89, passed away July 8, 2022, at Diversicare of Larned. He was born on Dec. 29, 1932, at Jamestown, N.Y. to Kenneth and Ethel (Rowland) Warner-Peters. He married Gloria Berger on Nov. 24, 1971 in Poland, N.Y.

A current Great Bend resident, Roger was a farmer. He loved the country life and its serene nature. Roger loved animals and fishing. He was a member of Cornerstone Fellowship Church. Roger served in the United States Army while being stationed in Nuremberg, Germany from 1952-1955.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Warner of the home; four sons, Roger K. Warner, Jr. of Waddell, Ariz., Kirby Warner of Goodyear, Ariz., William Warner of Lakewood, N.Y., and Danny Warner or Jamestown, N.Y.; two stepsons, Chuck Warner and Kim Michael, both of Jamestown, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Donald Warner; and three sisters, Barbara Warner Traver Smith, Janet Traver and Dorothy Lundmark.

Roger Warner, age 89

Dolores Maxine Maddy, 87, passed away July 9, 2022, at Chisholm Place Assisted Living in Wichita. She was born on September 24, 1934, in Alamota, Kan. to Jacob &amp; Naomi (Bahm) Bauer. She married Carl E. Maddy on August 28, 1955 in Dighton.

A longtime Great Bend resident, Dolores was the secretary for Security State Bank for three years before becoming a homemaker. She then worked part time for Ronald L. Miller, CPA for over thirty years. She graduated from Dighton High School and attended Brown Mackie Business College in Salina. Dolores was a member of Central Baptist Church in Great Bend. She enjoyed fishing and camping but especially loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include, her husband, Carl Maddy of Wichita; her children, Steven Maddy and wife Clarissa of Wichita, Terri Kennard of Wichita and Michael Maddy of Larned; a brother, Gary Bauer of Larned; seven grandchildren, Megan, Toby-James, Shannon, Shelbe, Samantha, Taryn and Gannon; two step grandchildren, Brooke and Stephen; a great granddaughter, Emersyn Lynn, with one on the way; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Naomi Bauer; a daughter, Lynette Gallentine; and a sister, Juanita (Bauer) Zink.

Dolores Maddy, age 87

Dona Marie (Fowler) Bender, 72, of Russell, Kansas passed away Thursday, July 7, 2022 at the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

Dona was born July 6, 1950 in Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp; She was the daughter of Donald and Lyla (Bruner) Fowler.&nbsp; She grew up in Wichita and graduated from North High School.

Dona was united in marriage to Larry Bender on March 21, 1981 in Milberger, Kansas.&nbsp; They made their home on a farm south of Russell.

Dona was a devoted wife and homemaker.&nbsp; When she was younger she worked as a Nurse’s Aid.&nbsp; She attended the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Milberger.&nbsp; In her sparetime, she enjoyed gardening, bowling, crocheting, and collecting chickens and dolls.

Dona’s surviving family include her husband of 41 years, Larry of the home; son, Eric Battaglear (Missy) of Hoisington, Kansas; brothers, Ron Fowler (Glenna) of Valley Center, Kansas and Patrick Fowler (Karen) of Hillsboro, Kansas; sisters, Carolyn Stock (Keith Unterseher) of Flippin, Arkansas and Anita Davis (Denny) of Wichita, Kansas; four grandchildren, Jerica Battaglear and Stephanie Horton (Brian), Jason Battaglear and Danny Battaglear (Samantha Duran); four great grandchildren, Isabella Mickle, Danica Horton, Aurora Horton and Westin Lee Battaglear; and six nieces and four nephews.

Dona was preceded in death by her parents, son Jason Battaglear, and brothers Larry Fowler and Mike Fowler.

Celebration of Dona’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, July 16, 2022 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Milberger.&nbsp; Burial will follow at the Bender Hill Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Friday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. &nbsp;A Memorial has been established as the Dona Bender Memorial Fund.&nbsp; Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Hal Joseph Hollembeak, 66, passed away July 10, 2022, at his home in Great Bend. He was born on May 26, 1956, in Great Bend, to Roy &amp; Twylah (Schmidt) Hollembeak. He married Cindy Coldwater on August 6, 1983, in Great Bend.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Hal worked in maintenance for USD 428 and was also a Great Bend Rec Umpire. He was a member of Central Baptist Church of Great Bend. He enjoyed hunting in his younger years and was an avid sports fan, especially the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs. His favorite player of all time was Mickey Mantle. Hal especially loved coaching his daughters’ ball teams when they were younger.

Survivors include, his wife, Cindy Hollembeak of the home, two daughters, Sara Renee Ford and husband Chris and Ashlei Dawn Hollembeak all of Great Bend; a brother, Bruce Hollembeak and wife Jeanne of Lee's Summit, Mo.; and a sister, Paula Laudick of Wichita. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Brenda Royce; and a brother-in-law, Ron Laudick.

Hal Hollembeak, age 66

Diane Audrey (Dunavan) Gibson passed away on July 8, 2022, at the age of 52 in Salina. She was born on July 1, 1970, at Fort Sill, Okla., the first-born daughter of Lt. Colonel Robert Dunavan and Janice (Hallagin) Dunavan.

Being a child of the military, Diane traveled across the world with her parents and siblings, Brian and Michael Dunavan. At age 14, she was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia, a condition that slowly took away her mobility. She graduated high school at Camp Zama, Japan in 1988, and graduated from Fort Hays State University with a degree in Education. Diane spent several years working off and on as a substitute teacher.

In 1996, she met her future husband Jeff Gibson, and they were married June 7, 1997. Shortly after, they moved to Great Bend, where they lived for more than 20 years. She continued to substitute teach until the birth of her children, Ian in 1999 and Chloe “CJ” in 2002.

Diane was a strong believer in the Christian faith and attended church regularly for most of her life. She was a member of the Pawnee Rock Christian Church for many years and served for a time as church treasurer.

In 2020, the family moved to La Crosse, which became Diane's home until an injury in 2022 hospitalized her, from which she never fully recovered. Her health related to her Friedreich’s Ataxia continued to decline until she passed away peacefully on July 8, 2022 at 7:45 p.m. at Holiday Resort Health and Rehab nursing home in Salina.

Diane is preceded in death by her father Robert Dunavan, and her younger brother Michael Dunavan. She is succeeded by her mother Janice Dunavan, husband Jeff Gibson, children Ian Gibson and Chloe “CJ” Gibson, brother Brian and his wife Karen Dunavan, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at Pawnee Rock Cemetery, Pawnee Rock, with Pastor John Thomas presiding. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at Beckwith Mortuary in Larned. Services will be streamed via Facebook live on the Beckwith Mortuary Facebook page.

Diane (Dunavan) Gibson, age 52

Ersa L. Keenan, 81, passed away July 7, 2022, at Brookdale East in Wichita. She was born on April 5, 1941, in Great Bend, to Frank &amp; Ersa (Cross) Koelsch. She married Johnny R. Keenan on May 23, 1966, in Great Bend. He died March 5, 2015.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Ersa was an insurance clerk for several doctors in town including, Dr. Cavanaugh, Dr. Holt and Dr. Schuetz. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Altar Society. Ersa was an avid golfer and baseball fan, she also enjoyed watching her Kansas City Chiefs.

Survivors include, a son, Mike S. Keenan of Manhattan; two brothers, Frank Koelsch of Ellinwood and James Koelsch and wife Nora of Clearwater. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Johnny R. Keenan; and an infant brother, Vaughn Koelsch.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, July 10, 2022 at Bryant Funeral Home, with Altar Society rosary at 4:00 p.m., and a Vigil service with rosary at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Father Prakash Kola presiding. Ersa Keenan, age 81

Larned – Michael Earnest Walker, 75, passed away July 5, 2022 at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned, KS.

He was born December 4, 1946 in Fresno, CA, the son of William Henry and Irma Sue (Barnes) Bauer. He moved to Larned in 2009 from Albuquerque, New Mexico and was a farm hand and mechanic for many years.

He was of the 7th Day Adventist Faith and loved doing mechanic work. Michael enjoyed anything cowboy, collecting cowboy memorabilia and loved John Wayne. He was a quick draw artist and had a contest against Sammy Davis Jr.

Survivors include: two sons, Michael C. Walker, Larned, Robert Eugene Walker; daughter, Christina Nichole Walker, Globe, AZ; two brothers, William Henry Bauer, Nevada, Norman Bauer, Sacramento, CA; two sister, Daisy Martin-Stephens and Beverly Bauer, both of Sacramento, CA; three grandchildren, Cyler Michael Walker, Jasmine Ruth Regna and Robert Joseph Nock.

Cremation has taken place and no service is planned at this time.

Michael Walker, age 75

Roger Keith Gore, 94, passed away July 6, 2022 at Diversicare of Larned.

He was born Aug. 16, 1927 in Paris, Kent., the son of Chester Erasmes and Hazel Ellen Puterbaugh Gore. A lifetime area resident, Roger was a farmer and stockman.

He was a member of the First Christian Church disciples of Christ, Great Bend, Walter S. Chears American Legion Post # 106,&nbsp; a volunteer for living history at Fort Larned National Historic Site and also the Santa Fe Trail Center. Roger was a past Sanford school board member and served in the United States Army.

On Jan. 10, 1951, he married Thelma Arlene (Peggy) Flanders in Great Bend. She passed away Sept. 27, 2007.

Survivors include: two sons, Wayne (Cynthia) Gore, Pawnee Rock, Michael (Betsy) Gore, Larned; daughter, Karen Gore, Larned; five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Stanly Gore; daughter, Jeanette Gore; brother, Hollis Gore and three sisters, Laura Alice Gore, Virginia Sielert and Evelyn Weisensee.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 15, 2022 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with Rev. Josh Leu presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 14, 2022 at Beckwith Mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery with military graveside rites.

Roger Gore, age 94

Doris Eleanor (Corman) Berkley, 93, passed peacefully on April 14, 2022, in Vancouver, Wash., near her granddaughter. She was born on lucky Friday, July 13, 1928, on a farm just outside of Tescott, to Winnifred and Swinley Corman. She married Harold Berkley on Nov. 9, 1947, in Tescott. Doris attended Wesleyan University, went on to work at the bank, and then later started the gift shop at the local Home Appliance store. She then went on to work at the gift shop at Komarek Jewelry, and throughout her life, she frequently recounted her fond memories of assisting all of “her” brides while working there. 

In her later years, her attention turned to doting on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a proud member of the First Christian Church and enjoyed activities with the joy group and serving others. She was also an active member of the Silver Cougars. Perhaps her most proud accomplishment later in life was sewing quilts, and hand embroidering over 850 pillowcases for the Golden Plains Quilts of Valor, a chapter she also helped establish. To date, the organization has awarded more than 860 quilts to local Veterans. 

Doris was an exceptional seamstress and crocheted the most beautiful and intricate afghans. Her afghans were highly coveted for not only their craftsmanship but their thoughtfulness and unique designs, tailored to the recipient. She was also known for her delicious baked goods which she often shared with others. Doris was a devoted wife, mother, loving grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who will be dearly missed by those who had the pleasure of knowing her, as will her abundance of stories. 

Doris was preceded in death by her husband Harold Berkley, her daughter Debbie Berkley, her brothers Gene, Evan, and Blaine, and sister Margaret. She is survived by her brothers Ted and Pat Corman, and sister Mary Louise Werries, her daughter Terri Rous, her grandchildren and their spouses Jennifer (Shawn) Zupfer, Sarah (Steven) DeWhitt, and Darren (Amber) Rous, and great-grandchildren, Mason, Alison, Rogan, Bennet and Colson. 

In her honor, memorial contributions can be made to the Golden Plains Quilts of Valor and the First Christian Church of Great Bend. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at 11 a.m, at the First Christian Church of Great Bend, followed by a light luncheon and fellowship.

On July 4, 2022, Cody Seever, age 22, joined the great rodeo beyond. Cody grew up with a love for the Rodeo world and officially started riding bulls about 10 years ago. Ever the country boy, Cody loved being outdoors and getting dirty. There wasn't a time in his life that Cody didn't have his fair share of animals around, professionally and personally. Most recently Cody left his Blue Healer companion, Roxy, behind to see his family through the loss.

He was born April 5, 2000, in Hoisington, and attended schools in Hoisington. He loved bullriding and hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed his time cowboying at the feedlots.

Survivors include: Father - Richard Lamb of Hoisington, Mother - Erin Dannebohm (and husband Jon) of Ellinwood, Sisters- Ashley Blair (and husband Ben) of Otis and Courtney Seever of Topeka, three nieces: Thea, Ella, and Layla and maternal Grandmother: Debby DuBois of Topeka. Cody was preceded in death by Paternal Grandmother Charlene Lamb. In addition to his immediate family, Cody will be missed by his numerous extended family members.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation with family from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington.

Cody Seever, age 22

Sister Teresita Huse, 103, died July 4, 2022, at the Dominican Sisters of Peace motherhouse in Great Bend. She was born July 23,1918, in Kingman, Kansas, the daughter of Frank and Clara Marx Huse. She entered the Dominican Sisters community in 1933 and pronounced vows in 1936. In 2021 she celebrated eighty-five years of religious profession.

Sister Teresita began her ministry as an elementary school teacher, serving for sixteen years in Kansas and Oklahoma schools. For the next fourteen years she ministered as a high school teacher and college professor. A call to pastoral ministry took her to Goodland, Kansas, in 1970 where she served the next eight years. Sister Teresita also served in leadership positions in her Dominican religious community. During a sabbatical she spent time in Japan teaching English to adults. She moved to the motherhouse in 1991 where she ministered in the Office of Mission and Ministry. She was known throughout the community for her hospitality and her love for the foreign missions.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as the Dominican Sisters of Peace. Sister Teresita was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Leo, Cletus, and Sylvester.

A Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 7. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 8. Both will take place at the Sisters’ Convent. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Cecilia Ann Schneweis, 92, died July 4, 2022, at Country Place Senior Living of Hoisington, Kansas. She was born September 20, 1929, on the family farm in Redwing, Kansas, the daughter of Adolph and Carrie (Linsner) Demel. Cecilia graduated from Odin High School in 1947.

On June 1, 1948, she married Raymond A. Schneweis, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Odin, Kansas. Together they farmed and raised eight children. Cherishing her time as a homemaker and farm wife, her love was shown in her gardening, her many chickens, her exceptional cooking and baking, and mostly just her beloved family times together. Ray preceded her in death on April 1, 2009.

Cecilia was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and was an active member for many years in the Altar Society, first in Odin and later in Hoisington.

Survivors include; four sons, Ron Schneweis of Hoisington, Kevin Schneweis of Hoisington, Bill Schneweis and wife Kitte of Monument, Colorado, Keith Schneweis of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two daughters, Lois Ritterhouse and husband Bob of Albert, Kansas, and Mary Sell and husband Steve of Olathe; daughter-in-law, Kathy Mai and husband Jay of Great Bend; and son-in-law, Kent D. Cecilia Schneweis, age 92

Stephen F. Effertz, age 71 years, of Great Bend, passed away at his home in Great Bend early on Saturday morning, July 2, 2022.&nbsp; Stephen was born on July 25, 1950 at Chippewa Falls, Wisc. to Henry L. and Sharon J. (Grisius) Effertz.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to Cindy J. Neal on Dec. 23, 1971 at Lone Grove, Okla.&nbsp; Stephen spent four years in the service of his country in the U.S. Army, and then worked in the oilfield for Dia-Log of Great Bend for 15 years.&nbsp; For 25 years from 1987 to 2012, he owned and operated the Baseball Card Shop in Great Bend.&nbsp; Stephen had a passion for card collecting, playing golf, coaching baseball, yard work and gardening, and in his younger years loved hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy J. Effertz of Great Bend; three sons: Steven Voth of Texas and Stephen Shane and Daniel Effertz, both of Great Bend; six grandchildren:&nbsp; Jayson Effertz, Justin Effertz, Blaze Jacobs, Trinity Reeves, Brayden Voth, and Tristan Voth; his mother, Sharon Servi of Heartland, Wisc., and his stepmother, Diane Effertz of Great Bend; three brothers:&nbsp; Anthony Effertz of Kansas City, Mo., Douglas Effertz of Great Bend, and John Servi of Yuma, Ariz.; one sister:&nbsp; Jackie Zube of Heartland, Wisc.; three step-siblings:&nbsp; Alana Blessing of Great Bend, Ryan Brack of Huntsville, Ala., and Landon Brack of Ellinwood; nieces and nephews.&nbsp; Stephen was preceded in death by his father, an infant sister Patty, an infant brother Danny, and a sister Janice Effertz.

Effertz, age 71 years, of Great Bend, passed away at his home in Great Bend early on Saturday morning, July 2, 2022.&nbsp; Stephen was born on July 25, 1950 at Chippewa Falls, Wisc. to Henry L. and Sharon J. (Grisius) Effertz.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to Cindy J. Neal on Dec. 23, 1971 at Lone Grove, Okla.&nbsp; Stephen spent four years in the service of his country in the U.S. Army, and then worked in the oilfield for Dia-Log of Great Bend for 15 years.&nbsp; For 25 years from 1987 to 2012, he owned and operated the Baseball Card Shop in Great Bend.&nbsp; Stephen had a passion for card collecting, playing golf, coaching baseball, yard work and gardening, and in his younger years loved hunting and fishing.Survivors include his wife, Cindy J. Stephen Effertz, age 71

Leo John Hall, 87, passed away July 2, 2022, at the University Of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. He was born on Dec. 3, 1934, at Great Bend, to Leo &amp; Bertha (Woods) Hall. On Jan. 31, 1971, he married Jane Francis Buser at St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Wichita. She died April 3, 2013.

A lifetime resident of Stafford County, Leo graduated from Great Bend High School, then later proudly served his country in the Army, stationed at Fort Riley. He spent his professional life as a farmer and rancher, especially enjoying wheat harvest, knowing all the other harvests would soon follow, and providing jobs and meals to many. Leo was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose, fourth-degree member of Knights of Columbus, Eucharistic Minister – both in church and delivering to those home bound, National FFA Farmer, and a member of the North Seward Township for around 25 years. He was a former member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church of Seward, St. John the Apostle Catholic Church of St. John, committee member for the Prince of Peace Parish Endowment and finance council member of the Prince of Peace.

Survivors include a son, Leon Francis Hall of Great Bend; a daughter, Barbara Jane (Daniel) Hall-Grizzell of Great Bend; a daughter-in-law, Lea Hall of Great Bend; and seven grandchildren, Samuel John Hall, Emilee Anastasia Hall, Jacob Francis Hall, Kelli Jane Hall, Karen Ann Hall, Kinze Danielle Grizzell, and Kyla Marie Grizzell. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Sims; and a son, Leonard Carl Hall.

Leo Hall, age 87

Ruth Arlene (Dixon) Williams, 67, passed away on June 13, 2022, in Marion, Ind., surrounded by her kids and grandkids. She was born in Centerline, Mich., on June 13, 1955, to Gerald and Alice Dixon, and raised in Great Bend, by her father and mother, Helene Freeman. Ruth was the only daughter and oldest sibling to brothers Albert “Bert” and Gerry Dixon.

Ruth moved to John Day, Ore., and graduated from Grant Union High School in 1975. She married Arnold Morin, with whom she had a son, Jason. Ruth later joined the Navy in the late 1970s, where she met and later married Clayton Exferd, with whom she had a daughter, Kelly. She then married Kenny Miller and became a stepmother to Karen. In 2002, she married Ken Williams, and they remained married until his passing in 2016.

After moving back to Great Bend, Ruth worked in the Great Bend Tribune Classifieds Department during the late 1980s. In 1990, she moved with her children back to Oregon and worked different jobs to support her family. Starting in 1999, Ruth took on her favorite role in life as a grandma and was blessed with her grandkids: Madison, Kendall, Faith, Hope, Ryan, Jonas and Molly. Aside from spending time with her family, she enjoyed traveling and never met a stranger. Ruth had many adopted kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, and friends whom she cherished.

Ruth is survived by her son, Jason (Michelle) Morin of Converse, Ind.; a daughter, Kelly (Joel) Jones of Union, Ore.; a brother, Gerry (Carrie) Dixon of Hopatcong, N.J.; grandchildren, Madison Exferd, Kendall Exferd, Ryan Jones, and Molly Grimm; a niece, Kathrine Dixon; a nephew, Blake Dixon; life-long best friend Jody (Craig) Bucl; and numerous cousins and relatives. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Ken Williams; her parents, Gerald and Helene Dixon, Alice Hatchel; a brother, Bert Dixon; grandchildren, Faith, Hope, and Jonas Morin; all of her grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

Graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Browns Grove Cemetery in Burdett, with Reverend Dick Ogle presiding and United States Navy and American Legion honors performed. A celebration of life will follow from noon to 2 p.m. at the Eagles Club in Great Bend, Kansas. William John “Bill” Luebbers, 68, passed away July 1, 2022, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born Feb. 7, 1954, to Joseph and Martina (Younger) Luebbers. Bill married Becky (Keener) Schneider May 4, 1990, in Jetmore. She survives.

Bill, a 1972 graduate of Claflin High School and lifelong resident of Hoisington, served the community of Hoisington as a Physician's Assistant for Clara Barton Hospital for 20 years. He had also worked in Hutchinson, Qatar, and Ft. Riley, retiring in 2020. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Fourth Degree member of Knights of Columbus, V.F.W. Post 6240, Russell, American Legion Post 320, Ellinwood. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1972-1978. His life passions include music, camping and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Becky Luebbers of the home; one daughter, Corliss Niethamer and husband Adam of College Station, Texas; two stepdaughters, Brenda Muehleisen and husband Eric of Hays, and Kristy Alvord of Great Bend; one brother, Michael Luebbers and wife Dawn of St. Louis, Mo.; brother-in-law, Roy Weber of Hoisington; and three grandchildren, Carter Muehleisen, Parker Muehleisen and Jace Welcher. He was preceded in death by brother, Andy Luebbers and a sister, Susan Weber.

William 'Bill' Luebbers, age 68

John M. Helfrich, 68, passed away June 25, 2022, at his home in Great Bend. He was born on November 30, 1953, in Great Bend, to Gerald &amp; Patricia (McMullen) Helfrich. He married Connie Deines in Great Bend and they later divorced.

John lived in Great Bend for most of his life. He lived in Oregon for a short time, then moved back to Kansas to help take care of his father. He was a Master Tool and Die Maker for Viega in McPherson prior to retiring. Recently he moved back to Great Bend to be closer to his family. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. John especially loved spending time with his family, camping, treasure hunting, Cheyenne Bottoms and star gazing.

Survivors include, his daughter, Nicole Helfrich of Great Bend; and two sisters, Shannon Smith of St. John and Kimberly Morse of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 30, 2022, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been designated to the Planetary Society or the Wetlands, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

John Helfrich, age 68

Larned- Mark Owen Slattery, 50, passed away June 25, 2022 at his home in Larned, KS. He was born February 25, 1972 in Bucklin, KS. the son of James O. and Donna L. Vandehey Slattery. Moving from Protection and Dodge City he was a Larned area resident for 14 years.

He was the pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church, Larned, a member of the Pawnee County Ministerial Alliance and a lifetime member of the VFW. Mark thoroughly loved supporting all his children in all they do and singing to his grandson. He enjoyed announcing at all Larned Indian sports and was an avid Royals and Chiefs fan.

On May 25, 1996, he married Shannon Winget in Dodge City, KS. She survives.

Other survivors include: his father, James (Donnetta) Slattery, Dodge City, KS.; one daughter, Ashleigh Slattery, Manhattan, KS.; four sons, Jeremiah (Abigail) Slattery, Larned, KS., Ricky Slattery, Larned, KS., Christopher Slattery, Larned, KS. and Christian Slattery, Larned, KS.; one brother, Tom (Bridget) Slattery, Thomas, OK.; one sister, Lisa Statton, Grove, OK. and one grandchild, Nathaniel Slattery.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Donna Slattery and one brother, Jimmy Slattery.

Mark Slattery, age 50

Darlene
 Kay (Bell) Kasselman was born June 5, 1945, and joined the Lord on June 
21, 2022.&nbsp; Born to John Elmer and Ruby (Perkins) Bell in Lyons, Kansas.&nbsp;
 She is survived by her husband Larry D. Kasselman of Valley Center; 
children Tammy Kasselman (Martin Navarrete), Daron Kasselman (Holly 
Kasselman); brother Ronald Bell (Patricia); sister Diane Cunningham; 
grandchildren Samantha Hill (Jeff Hill), Devan Navarrete, Brittany Young
 (Jake Wright), and Jacob Kasselman; great grandkids: Danielle, Waylen, 
&amp; Charlie Hayes, Jarrod and Jace Hill, Jianna &amp; Josie Wright; 
many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and 
grandson Jesse Navarrete.

As
 a youth she moved from Lyons to Sterling, Hays and finally Great Bend 
where she met Larry. She attended Brown Machie Business College in 
Wichita. It was in Great Bend where Darlene got her first glimpse of 
Larry. She was working in the upstairs office of Montgomery Wards. Larry
 would come over from the tire shop on Thursday night to pick up his pay
 envelope of $49.19 cash. Larry encountered Darlene on a double date and
 later asked his buddy permission to ask her out.&nbsp; Dating less than a 
year, they went to Pastor Talbet. As pastors are prone to do it wasn’t 
long before salvation came up. After presenting the love of God through 
Christ, She readily accepted. She grew in Jesus Christ becoming more and
 more faithful over 56 years.&nbsp; She worked in real estate in Great Bend 
and later opened a clothing store called “Tammy’s" to provide plus-size 
clothing for women. In 1979, Larry was transferred to Wichita and the 
family moved to Valley Center. Darlene got a job at Koch Industries 
which turned out to be more physical than she expected. She got a job 
with the Ark Valley State Bank for many years.&nbsp; Daughter Tammy was 
working in home health and Darlene then began working doing the books. 
They later decided to start their own company which became a family 
story starting in our home’s basement, relocating four times ending up 
in Wichita with a satellite office in Hutchinson. In early 2014 
Darlene’s mind began changing. The doctor gave her a piece of string and
 asked to make a circle with it to resemble a clock. She handed him back
 the string without understanding or trying. The doctor shook his head 
and sadly told us that dementia and Alzheimers is a cruel disease.

Darlene
 will be greatly missed by family and many friends and acquaintances. 
She was a champion of her family and helped many people who needed her 
help. To have her time back would be most selfish on our part. Christ 
has built her a mansion above. The family would like to sincerely wish 
to thank the workers and nurses from All Saints Home Care, Inc., 
Rivercross Hospice and Phoenix Hospice.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Memorial

 Kay (Bell) Kasselman was born June 5, 1945, and joined the Lord on June 
21, 2022.&nbsp; Born to John Elmer and Ruby (Perkins) Bell in Lyons, Kansas.&nbsp;
 She is survived by her husband Larry D. Kasselman of Valley Center; 
children Tammy Kasselman (Martin Navarrete), Daron Kasselman (Holly 
Kasselman); brother Ronald Bell (Patricia); sister Diane Cunningham; 
grandchildren Samantha Hill (Jeff Hill), Devan Navarrete, Brittany Young
 (Jake Wright), and Jacob Kasselman; great grandkids: Danielle, Waylen, 
&amp; Charlie Hayes, Jarrod and Jace Hill, Jianna &amp; Josie Wright; 
many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and 
grandson Jesse Navarrete.As
 a youth she moved from Lyons to Sterling, Hays and finally Great Bend 
where she met Larry. She attended Brown Machie Business College in 
Wichita. It was in Great Bend where Darlene got her first glimpse of 
Larry. She was working in the upstairs office of Montgomery Wards. Larry
 would come over from the tire shop on Thursday night to pick up his pay
 envelope of $49.19 cash. Larry encountered Darlene on a double date and
 later asked his buddy permission to ask her out.&nbsp; Dating less than a 
year, they went to Pastor Talbet. As pastors are prone to do it wasn’t 
long before salvation came up. After presenting the love of God through 
Christ, She readily accepted. She grew in Jesus Christ becoming more and
 more faithful over 56 years.&nbsp; She worked in real estate in Great Bend 
and later opened a clothing store called “Tammy’s" to provide plus-size 
clothing for women. In 1979, Larry was transferred to Wichita and the 
family moved to Valley Center. Darlene got a job at Koch Industries 
which turned out to be more physical than she expected. She got a job 
with the Ark Valley State Bank for many years.&nbsp; Daughter Tammy was 
working in home health and Darlene then began working doing the books. 
They later decided to start their own company which became a family 
story starting in our home’s basement, relocating four times ending up 
in Wichita with a satellite office in Hutchinson. In early 2014 
Darlene’s mind began changing. The doctor gave her a piece of string and
 asked to make a circle with it to resemble a clock. She handed him back
 the string without understanding or trying. The doctor shook his head 
and sadly told us that dementia and Alzheimers is a cruel disease.Darlene
 will be greatly missed by family and many friends and acquaintances. 
She was a champion of her family and helped many people who needed her 
help. To have her time back would be most selfish on our part. Christ 
has built her a mansion above. The family would like to sincerely wish 
to thank the workers and nurses from All Saints Home Care, Inc., 
Rivercross Hospice and Phoenix Hospice.&nbsp;&nbsp;Memorial

Darlene Kay (Bell) Kasselman 

Janice Kay Folkerts, 77, passed away June 22, 2022, at Almost Home in Great Bend. She was born on May 20, 1945, at Great Bend, to Edwin &amp; Margaret (Halda) Hemken. She married Leon John Folkerts April 29, 1972, in Albert.

A lifetime Rush county resident, Janice was a paraprofessional for USD #428 and was very active on the farm. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Albert and the church ladies quilting society. She enjoyed tending to her flower gardens but especially loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include, her husband, Leon Folkerts of the home; a son, Jonathan Leon Folkerts of the home; a daughter, Christina Kay Folkerts and husband Randy Zellers of Wichita; two brothers, Edwin Hemkin, Jr. of Derby and Robert Hemken of Pawnee Rock; and four sisters, Joyce Hemken of Alvin, Tex., Dorothy Hessman of Dodge City, Susan Wozniak of Bella Vista, Ark. and Patricia Hemken of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant daughter, Victoria Rose Folkerts.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, June 26, 2022 at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 27, 2022, at Peace Lutheran Church in Albert, with Rhonda Templing, SAM presiding. Janice Folkerts, age 77

Paul Jerome “P.J.” Axman, 64, passed away June 21, 2022, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. He was born on April 22, 1958, at Great Bend, to Jerome "Jack" &amp; Betty Mae (Smolik) Axman. He married Brenda Frydendall on June 5, 1981, at Olmitz.

A lifetime Barton county resident, Paul was a general contractor, owning and operating Axman Builders for nearly 38 years. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Hoisington, and devoted member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly and Knights of Columbus Council #2100, Olmitz. Never having idle hands, it was his lifelong passion spending time restoring his 1931 Model A with his nephew, Chad Axman. He especially loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include, his wife, Brenda Axman of the home; his son, Douglas Axman and wife Jenn and beloved granddaughter, Adalynn Axman, all of Hoisington; one brother, Joe; three sisters, Lillian, Barbara and Rita; mother-in-law, JoAnn Frydendall; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Michael; a sister, Judy; brother-in-law, Tom; and father-in-law, Garth Frydendall.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday, June 27, 2022, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, 415 N. Main in Hoisington. Vigil service and Knights of Columbus Rosary will be 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 27, at St. Ann Catholic Church, Olmitz. Patricia Ann&nbsp;“Pat”&nbsp;Gerstenkorn, 95, passed away June 21, 2022, at&nbsp;River Bend Assisted Living in Great Bend. She was born on December 18, 1926, at Great Bend, to Arthur &amp; Mary Ellen (Keenan) Campbell. She married LeRoy Benedict Gerstenkorn on August 10, 1949, at Great Bend. He died February 22, 2008.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Pat graduated from Great Bend High School. Pat would say her main job in life was raising her family of five, but she also helped her husband LeRoy build and operate their business, City Ice. She was also a teacher's aide and librarian for St. Patrick Catholic School. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Altar Society.&nbsp;Pat liked to listen to country music, read and bake. She loved to&nbsp;cheer on the Kansas City Royals and&nbsp;play games,&nbsp;especially cards and dominos. In her younger years,&nbsp;she&nbsp;enjoyed fellowship with her friends in a bowling league&nbsp;and her position on the&nbsp;St. Patrick School Board. Pat loved holding the tradition of spending Friday and Saturday nights with her family.&nbsp;

Survivors include, a son, Kevin Gerstenkorn and wife Colleen of Wichita; four daughters, Deborah Daniel and husband Mark, Sue Hemphill and husband Brad, Lisa Seiwert and husband Bernie, and Jennifer Hoskins and husband Kendall all of Great Bend; a sister, Mary Ellen Nieman of Chino Hills, Calif.; ten grandchildren, Brandon Hemphill (Erin), Matthew Daniel, Brett Hemphill (Erin), Kendra Metzger (Kyle), Tyler Gerstenkorn (Shelby Alcorn), Hannah Degenhardt (Devon), Kayla Debes (Colton), Emily Kennedy (Mark), Braden Gerstenkorn and Breann Weppler (Logan); and ten great-grandchildren, Adalyn Hemphill, Jacob Hemphill, Avery Hemphill, Emma Hemphill, Brynn Metzger, Grayson Degenhardt, Whitney Metzger, Fletcher Degenhardt, Hoyt Gerstenkorn and Patton Kennedy. Patricia ‘Pat’ Gerstenkorn, age 95

Karen Louise Sunderland, age 80 years, of Great Bend, KS passed away on Thursday morning June 16, 2022 at Azria Health Woodhaven Care Center in Great Bend. &nbsp;Karen was born on October 1, 1941 in Hutchinson, KS to Raymond T. and Mary Louise (Alexander) Mullenix. 

Karen was raised in Bushton, KS and graduated from Bushton High School in 1960. &nbsp;Later, she became a Nurse’s Aide in Wichita, KS working there and also at CKMC hospital in Great Bend for several years. &nbsp;On March 10, 1977 Karen and Guy Sunderland were united in marriage in Great Bend. The blended family of Guy’s three daughters and Karen’s son grew larger when their only child together, Mandi Kay, was born May 15, 1978. The family lived in Dodge City, KS and Tulsa, OK before returning to Great Bend permanently. Karen became an active volunteer in the community, especially for the Central Kansas Dream Center and Soup Kitchen. She was also known for mentoring high school students and others with her faith and Bible studies. Karen was quick to respond to anyone who wanted to hear a comforting scripture, including her sisters who admired her vast knowledge and understanding of the Bible. &nbsp;Known as the “best cook in the family”, Karen loved making collages and was talented in many kinds of crafts. She always enjoyed fishing with her husband, Guy. &nbsp;Above all, Karen loved God, family, and life as a Christian woman. As everyone has struggles and hardships, Karen faced more than her share, yet she&nbsp;remained strong in her faith and touched so many lives with her kind, loving heart.

Karen is survived by two daughters: Desiree Werth of Holyrood, KS and&nbsp;Dawn Lang of Great Bend, KS; seven grandchildren: Briana Feist, Sarah Tisdale, &nbsp;Ashley, Keshia, &amp; Sydney Werth, Jotni Pankey and Kialy Giesking; &nbsp;nine great-grandchildren; four sisters: Shirley R. Jeter of Kingfisher, OK, Trudy M. Magee of Bloomington, IL, &nbsp;Nora J. Anderson of Bloomington, IN, and&nbsp;Deanna S. Harris of Overland Park, KS; Also one very special brother-in-law; &nbsp;Ed Harris of Overland Park, KS; many nieces and nephews. &nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 40 years, Guy L. Sunderland, two daughters: Sue Ann Murray and Mandi K. Alexander (Sept 2002), one son, Brian Brueggemann (Oct, 2016), and one granddaughter&nbsp;Kirsten Danielle Desiree Coble&nbsp;(May, 2021).

According to Karen and Guy’s wishes, she has been interred with Guy at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery at Fort Dodge, KS. &nbsp;Memorial donations are designated to either the Central Kansas Dream Center,&nbsp;2100 Broadway Avenue, Great Bend, KS 67530&nbsp;or the Kansas Veterans Cemetery at Ft. Dodge, Kansas. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Karen spent the last 4 years of her life making the Great Bend Health &amp; Rehab, later becoming Azria Health, her home. After Guy’s passing, Karen sold their home and chose this facility on her own. She enjoyed many friends there, including caring staff and families. The activities were the highlight of her day. Bingo was rarely missed! &nbsp;Karen’s sisters want to extend our gratitude and appreciation for all the hard work, extended hours, phone calls, patience, and good care given to Karen. We are so glad she was “home” in her final days. Thank you!

Karen Sunderland, age 80

Ida (Beth) Elizabeth Ford, 69, passed away in Kansas City, KS on June 20th, 2022. The daughter of Robert &amp; Ida Marlene (Jepson) Helton, Beth was born in Greensburg, KS on Sept. 1st, 1952. She graduated from Dodge City High School in 1970 later receiving her Bachelors in Nursing from Wichita St. University in 1980. Beth went on to work 35 years as an RN for APPS. She married Randy Ford on Sept. 16, 1978 in Wichita, KS.&nbsp; Beth was a loving and devoted mother and wife who is survived by her husband, Randy Ford, Dodge City, KS; daughters, Tiffany Ford and Melissa Ford, both of Great Bend, KS; mother, Ida Marlene Jepson, Leavenworth, KS; brother, Dale Helton, Lawrence, KS; and sister, Mary Sudduth, Springfield, MO. Beth also leaves behind beloved granddogs Filly &amp; Elise.&nbsp;She was preceded in death by father Robert Helton.&nbsp; Funeral service will take place 10:30 AM, Fri., June 24th at First Baptist Church south of Ellinwood, KS with Pastor David Wesner officiating. There will be no visitation. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City at 3 PM Friday.
