Sylvia Irene Eddingfield, 97, passed away on Nov. 27, 2023, at Pratt Regional Medical Center, Pratt. She was born on Sept. 29, 1926, in Seward, to Eric and Ida (Bunselmeyer) Fischer. On July 16, 1948, she married Don Triplette in Great Bend. He passed on July 12, 1993. She then married Carl Eddingfield on Feb. 14, 1997. He passed on June 21, 2018.

Spending most of her life in Great Bend, Sylvia was a high school graduate from Great Bend High School and attended college at Emporia State Teacher College. She lived in Wichita for 12 years, then returned to Great Bend, working as a breakfast cook at Hardee’s as well as a clerk at Duckwall’s. She was a member of United Church of Christ in Hudson. In 2018, she and Carl moved to Pratt to be near her niece’s family and became a regular attendee at the Pratt Presbyterian Church. Sylvia enjoyed walking, puzzles and time with family. She especially enjoyed spending time with her great-great nieces.

Survivors include nieces, Brenda (Rex) Johnston of Pratt, whom she considered as a daughter, Judy (Tom) Wolf of Cedar Park, Texas, and Nancy (Morris) Kirschberg of San Antonio, Texas; nephews, Robert (Jenny) Glynn of Great Bend, Donnie Glynn of Hudson, Mike Munz of Hudson, and Pat Munz of Wichita; several great nieces and nephews and several great-great nieces and nephews.

In addition to Don and Carl, Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Eunice Miller and Elda Glynn.

Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, Dec. 8, 2023, at 2 p.m. at the Pratt Presbyterian Church with Pastor Chris Davis presiding. Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, at Great Bend Cemetery, with Pastor Mike Munz presiding. Mel D. (Holly) Holopirek, 81,&nbsp;died November 29, 2023 at his home in Maize, Kansas after an extended battle with cancer. Born May 10, 1942 to Ernest and Pauline (Krug) Holopirek, he grew up in the small town of Timken with brothers Rick (Kathy), Ken, and sister Debra (Eric) Kohn. &nbsp; Mel graduated from Bison High School and Fort Hays State College with a B.S. in Business Administration.&nbsp;

Serving his country in the U.S. Air Force, Mel rose to the rank of Captain where he was a Titan II Missile Commander. He and Darnell Keller Heskett eloped August 17, 1969. After making their first home in Tucson, AZ, they returned home to Kansas where career opportunities led to Oakely, Colby, and Ft. Scott. Mel retired as Vice President of Farmers Bank and Trust, Albert, Kansas in 2014.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mel and Darnell made their final home in Maize. A man of God, his Life Church family was a source of joy and peace for him.&nbsp; Mel will always be remembered as one who dearly loved his family. Preceded in death by his parents, he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Darnell; daughters Terra (Alan) Zerr, Stillwater OK, Jemelle Ebers, Wichita, and son Lander (Kary) Holopirek, Wamego and grandchildren Steele, Shaye, and Stratten Ebers.

Mel 'Holly' Holopirek, age 81

Katherine L. George, 90, passed away Nov. 28, 2023, at Diversicare of Larned.

She was born April 7, 1933 in Pawnee County, the daughter of Albert and Olivia Jenisch Debes. She graduated from Zook High School in 1951.

A former resident of Boulder and Louisville, Colo., their family moved to the Larned area in 1993. She was a homemaker and a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Albert, Larned Garden Club, and Zook Community Club. Katherine loved family history, documenting photos, and organizing the family tree. She spent many hours working in her yard, enjoying her beautiful flowers, bird watching, traveling and going on the Extension trips.

On May 30, 1953 she married Lloyd W. George in Albert; he preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 1997.

Survivors include: sister, Pauline (Norman) Herrmann, Kinsley; daughter-in-law, Debra George, Colo.; several nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Lloyd; son, Alan George; daughter, Debbie George; brother, Bernard Debes; and two sisters, Alma Frick and Rose George.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023, at Peace Lutheran Church, Albert, with Pastor Wayne Baldyga presiding. Katherine George, age 90

Julius Robert “Jule” Scheck, 94, passed away November 23, 2023, at home in Great Bend, Kan. He was born October 27, 1929, in Walker, Kan. to Andrew and Barbara (Vonfeldt) Scheck. Jule married Gretchen (Bradfield) Watkins July 19, 1975, in Great Bend. Gretchen passed away Feb. 24, 2021.

Jule was in the trucking business for 44 years, working for Felton Truckline in Russell coming to Great Bend in 1956; as manager for Knaus Terminal and then employed by Consolidated Freightline by Grave Trucking. He worked for ANR Truckline and Coast Pipeline as senior driver until his retirement in 1990. He was the Union Steward for International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and a member of Prince of Peace Parish, Knights of Columbus Council #862, and Eagles Lodge #646.

Survivors include three daughters, Diana Ellis, Debra Hollins, and Donna Frederick (Terry), all of Overland Park, Kan.; three step sons, Kerry Watkins (Jan) of Great Bend, Kevin Watkins (Pam) of Independence, KS; and Kemper Watkins (Melissa) of Livingston, Texas; step daughter, Shannon Bolding of Great Bend; three grandchildren, six great grandchildren, three step grandchildren, and 3 step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Andrew Scheck, Richard Scheck, Ray Scheck, John Scheck, infant Joseph Scheck, and Severeign Scheck; and four sisters, Amelia Lange, Helen Woodward, Regina Miller, and Mary Ann Elliott.

A Vigil with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Bryant Funeral Home. Julius 'Jule' Scheck, age 94

David Eugene Roberts, 81 of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away on November 25, 2023.

He is survived by his wife, Delene Roberts, children, Roberta Benoit of Corpus Christy, TX, David E. Roberts, Jr. (Michel) of Oklahoma City, OK, Samuel Roberts (Marya) of Denver, CO; sister, Helen Gayle Lank; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Mary Roberts.

He was a native of Eurika, KS and a resident of Madison County since 1993. David was a member of Flint River Baptist Church, The American Legion Post 237, and Apollo Lodge 921. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served his country for four years.

David Roberts, age 81

Kenneth C. Seyfert, 85, died November 28, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. He was born July 11, 1938, in Claflin, Kansas, the sixth son of Ted and Emma (Janda) Seyfert. Kenneth graduated in 1956 from Claflin High School and then went on to mechanics trade school in Kansas City.

On January 28, 1961, he married Norma J. Courange in Hoisington.

Kenneth worked as an electrician for the City of Hoisington for thirty-nine years, retiring in 2013.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Norma Seyfert of the home; and three children; Kevin Seyfert and wife Rita of Great Bend, Nancy Crawford and husband Mark of Hoisington, and Kimberly Lange and husband William of Wichita; a brother, Don Seyfert of Ellsworth; eight grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Gene, Alvin, Dale, and Ivan Seyfert.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m., Thursday, with family to greet friends from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Friday, December 1, 2023, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Ron Bailey presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery.

Kenneth Seyfert, age 85

On Nov. 28, 2023, Raymond L. “Ray” Demel passed away peacefully at Medicalodges in Goddard after a long illness. The son of Frank and Mary (Klug) Demel, Ray was born Aug. 3, 1948, in Claflin. In 1972, he married Lois Schnewise; they later divorced. He then married Patricia “Pat” (Stoppel) Keil on Feb. 3, 1979, in Great Bend. To their union, they had a daughter, Melissa R. Demel.

Raymond was a 29-year veteran of the Army and Army Reserves, serving in both Vietnam and Desert Storm. He was honorably retired with the rank of Sergeant First Class. Ray was a great patriot. He enjoyed leading the Color Guard in the Hoisington Labor Day Parade and serval cemeteries on Memorial Day.

Ray worked serval jobs in his lifetime, including for farmers, The Odin Store, Thies Packing Company, beef selector for TopCo and Dillons, the Job Service Center, United Parcel, Exxon, and Bachman Production Specialties. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish and a lifetime member of the V.F.W.

Survivors include his wife, Pat, of the home; daughter, Melissa Demel; seven siblings, Delores (Jim) Rosenberg of Simsbury, Conn., Rosemary Schremmer of Hoisington, Robert (Rosemary) Demel of Hoisington, Tom (Darlene) Demel, of Hoisington, Marvin (Phyllis) Demel of Kanopolis, Allen (Margaret) Demel of Elk City, Oklahoma, and Mark (Barbara) Demel of Hoisington; brother-in-law, LeRoy Stoppel; many nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Frank Demel; brothers-in-law, Kenny Schremmer and Ernest Stoppel; and nephew, Lantz Walters.

Raymond 'Ray' Demel, age 75

Dorthy Lynn Doonan, 74, died November 26, 2023, in Salina, Kansas. She was born July 2, 1949, in Elkins, West Virginia, the daughter of Arnold and Alice (Chewning) Hart. Dorothy graduated from Elkins High School in 1967.

On September 6, 1969, she married Glen A. Doonan in Patuxent River, Maryland. He preceded her in death earlier this year on June 18th.

A Hoisington resident since 1975, coming from Pratt and Great Bend, Dorthy was the Barton County Clerk of the District Court for 23 years retiring in 2012. She enjoyed crocheting and bird watching and was known for the many wedding cakes she made. Family was her most central part of her life and she loved spending time with them.

She is survived by her three children; Jeff Doonan and fiancé Loretta Smith of Hoisington, Lynn Andres and husband Merlyn of Solomon, and Wade Doonan and wife Sandy of Salina; six siblings, John Hart and wife Becky, Joe Hart and wife Kelly, David Hart and wife Kay, Debbie Gainer and husband Harold, Edward Hart, all of Elkins, West Virginia and Steve Hart and wife Carol of Charles Town, West Virginia; six grandchildren, Jacob Andres and wife Jennifer, Shauna Andres and fiancé Krys Lane, Alexis Miller and husband Conlan, Austin Doonan, Kacee Doonan, and Bryce Doonan; and a great grandson, Benjamin Andres.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother, Jeffery Hart.

Merle Raymond McLaren,94, of Hays, passed away Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, in Hays. He was born Dec. 23, 1928, in Chicago, Ill., to David and Blanche (Beique) McLaren.

On Jan. 16, 1954, he married Betty Lou Schemm in Wichita. They celebrated 67 years together before her passing on Oct. 14, 2021. Merle left school at 16 years old to help take care of the family after his dad passed but did continue his education later in life ending with a bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University.

He later joined the U.S. Air Force and retired after 23 years of service to his country. His service included both Korea and Vietnam in which he received numerous accommodations, including a Bronze Star.

He owned McLaren Lincoln-Mercury-GMC in Hays for 18 years and was one of the original business owners to push for expansion north of I-70. Merle was a member of the Hays VFW and an active member of the Honor Guard. He received a Quilt of Valor. He was chosen as Hays All-American Citizen in 2018, but his greatest joy was family and taking care of his grandkids.

Betty L. (Schemm) McLaren, 87, of Hays, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. She was born March 21, 1934, in WaKeeney, the daughter of Joseph and Eva (Schwien) Schemm. Betty was a homemaker and a selfless mother. Her primary concern in life was always the welfare of her family.

She loved people in general and doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a graduate of Trego High School, WaKeeney. Her husband, Merle, was a career member of the USAF, and together with their growing family traveled to many areas of the free world.

Survivors include their children, Terrence K. McLaren and wife, Carla, Cape Coral, Fla.; Laurie A. Johnson and husband, Kris, Hawaii; Debra A. McLaren, Hays; Erin P. Filbert, Ness City; Nita M. A combined celebration of life service for Merle and Betty will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023, with memorial visitation from 1:30 until service time at Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory-Brock's Chapel 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.

Helen L. Moos, 97, passed away Nov. 27, 2023, at Medicallodges of Great Bend, Great Bend, Kan. She was born July 29, 1926, in Great Bend, to Clyde and Hattie (Webster) Denney. Helen married Robert V. Moos Aug. 25, 1942, Great Bend, and were later divorced.

Helen, a lifetime resident of Great Bend, dedicated her professional life to health care, as a Nurse Aide, Physical Therapy Aide, and activities director for Great Bend Manor. She was a member of the Catholic faith and enjoyed embroidery and painting.

Survivors include three sons, Robert W. Moos (Dennie) of Great Bend, David Moos of Wichita, and Mike Moos (Stephanie) of Ellinwood; two daughters, Toni Leiker (Don) of Great Bend, and Susan Cain (Alan) of Lyons; 14 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by son, Patrick Moos; one grandson, Ryan Moos; four brothers, Vernon Denney, Cecil Denney, Fred Denney, Dale Denney; and four sisters, Lula Michel, Eunice Lopeman, Mary Seeley, and Ethel Baldwin.

Barbara Kay Guerra, 64, passed away on Nov. 22, 2023, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas. She was born on Aug. 11, 1959, in Mechanicsburg, Ohio, to Kenneth Sr., and Nancy (Wilson) Pack. On June 2, 1980, she married Roberto Guerra in Miami, Okla.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Barbara was a homemaker, known for her great cooking. She enjoyed crafting, flower gardening, and attending garage sales. Barbara’s greatest joy was spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Chai Guerra and wife, Gracie, and Izzy Guerra and wife, Ashley, all of Great Bend; six grandchildren, Ethen, Peyton, Brooks, Teegan, Raquel and Owen; uncles, Al and Keith Pack, both of Ohio; and an aunt, Bea Metz and husband, Steve, of Woodstock, Ohio; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Matthew Ryan “Matt” Deschner, 41, passed away on November 25, 2023, at his home in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on May 21, 1982, in Hays, Kansas, to Bradley and Karry (Boyd) Deschner.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Matt worked as a truck driver. Growing up, he attended Trinity Lutheran Church. Matt was a member of the Kansas Motocross Championship Series (KMCS) and enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing darts, spending time with family and friends – he didn’t know a stranger and was a friend to all, but most importantly, spending time with his son, tinkering on motocross bikes.

Survivors include a son, Tyler Deschner of Burrton; his father, Brad, of Great Bend; a brother, Josh Deschner and wife, Tiffany, of Valley Center; a sister, Barbie VanderGiesen and husband, Blake, of Great Bend; nephews, Cole Deschner, and Bankston and Bishop VanderGiesen; nieces, Brooke, Paige and Quinn Deschner; co-parent, Candra Ruppe; and among numerous friends and loved ones, special friends Koen, Jake, Trent, Chelsea, Aaron, Taree, Troy and April.

Born in California and raised in Kansas, Doug became an avid spectator of all sports, especially those involving his family. Doug will be best remembered within the Great Bend community because of his bigger-than-life persona and his raw athletic ability. Doug's laughter had such bass, it could be heard by all the children playing downstairs during the holidays; and when Doug spoke, people listened. He enjoyed spending time with his family, including three-wheeling, hunting and fishing. Doug's eyes really lit up when talking about childhood memories and all the times he got in trouble with his mother, but it was usually the fault of his siblings.

Doug was involved in many sports throughout his life including rodeo, arm wrestling, softball and track and field, but he was best known for his time spend on the football field at Great Bend High School. His size and quickness earned him All-State honors for offensive line and defensive line. He was heavily recruited by major universities including Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, Ohio State and KSU.

Doug is preceded in death by his parents Rodney Keith Hilton and Veda Hilton, and his wife Karen Hilton. Those left to cherish his memory include his sister Vicky Mitchell and Lee Mitchell; brother Lyle; brother Steve and wife Dara; the children he loved and called his own, son Dale and his wife Jana; daughter Cary Hilton; stepson Jason Myers; and stepdaughter Janette Linsky and husband Russ, Donna Ramsey. Survivors also include his grandkids Alexis Hurd, Jaylin Brown and fiancé John Boese, Trey Hurd, Brendon Hilton, Jonathan Hilton, Caroline Linsky, Charlotte Linsky, Danton Hilton and Daymon Hilton; three great grandchildren, five nephews, and three nieces.&nbsp;

Douglas Hilton

Dortha Keenan passed away on November 22, 2023 at Overland Park, KS. She was born January 11, 1935 to Clyde Willis and Lela (Williamson) Willis in Ada, OK. As a young child, she and her family moved to Salem, IL. She enjoyed her time there and had many good memories. In 1945, the family moved to Great Bend, KS. She remembered the celebration of World War II on Main Street with confetti, singing and dancing.

She graduated from Great Bend High School and attended Hutchinson Junior College. In 1956 she married Patrick Keenan at St. Rose Catholic Church in Great Bend. She was a housewife and mother until 1969 when she received her Kansas Real Estate License. Dortha often said that being in real estate was such a good fit for her because she enjoyed helping friends and relatives, but also meeting new people and showcasing interesting homes. She was proud to be among the first Realtors in Great Bend to earn the Certified Real Estate Specialist (CRS) and Certified Real Estate Broker (CRB) designations and was a graduate of the Realtor Institute (GRI). She is a member of the Kansas Real Estate Honor Society, was named 1982 Realtor of the Year, and was the first female President of the Great Bend Board of Realtors in 1982, and again in 1992 and 1993. She was president of the St Rose Altar Society, member of the Great Bend Pilot Club and active in the ACTS ministry at Prince of Peace Parish.

Dortha was proud to live in Great Bend, promoting it in any way she could. She became an early member of the Chamber of Commerce, lasting 38 years. She chaired the Chamber’s Beautification Committee for nine years, the initial project of which lined Broadway’s islands with decorative bricks and flower planters.

Though her real estate career and civic involvement brought her fulfillment, it was her family who always came first. Family dinner was always the high point of the day.

Survivors include her four children, Kelly and wife Sharon Beemer of Houston, Carrie Keenan Nash and husband Todd of Boulder, Cade and wife Sara of Kansas City, Chris of Minneapolis, and eight grandchildren: Connor Nash, Parker Nash and wife Veronica, Audrey Keenan, Samuel Keenan, Annie Keenan, Katherine Keenan, Emma Keenan, and Madeline Keenan. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Patrick Keenan.

Dortha Keenan, age 88

On the afternoon of November 19, 2023, Betty Louise Toot passed away at the age of 98, in Amarillo, TX. Born on July 16, 1925, in Belpre, KS, Betty was the ninth child of Maurice and Mabel Montgomery. With 11 sisters and three brothers, there was always someone to play with and Betty remained close to her siblings throughout their lives. She graduated from Belpre High School and sometime after met Calvin L Toot at a Hug and Stomp Dance held at the Community Center. Calvin enlisted and Betty followed him to San Francisco where they married on August 2, 1945. A young war bride, Betty worked as both a waitress and a telephone operator while Calvin was a gunner on the USS Fair in the Pacific Fleet. Deployment also took them to Seattle, WA until Calvin’s release from the Navy when they returned to Larned, KS to work the family farm. The Toots also resided in Hill City, KS and then Liberal, KS where Betty lived for more than 56 years. She worked in the cafeteria at West Junior High which allowed her to be home when her children were not in school. After they were grown, she went to work at Southwest Medical Center as a cook and was promoted to Supervisor. She worked early mornings and delighted in the days when her visiting grandchildren would stop by to eat breakfast or lunch at the hospital cafeteria with her. She was then free to spend the afternoon and evenings with her family, cooking for them, taking an evening walk, and hearing about their lives. After retirement, Betty enjoyed traveling to visit her family, her daily walks, and volunteering at the hospital gift shop. A lifelong gardener, Betty cared for her flower beds and continued to mow the lawn herself until her move to Amarillo, TX.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Calvin L Toot. They had been married for 55 years. She is survived by her daughters Linda (Bill) Morlan of Overland Park, KS; Judy (Mike) Connelly of Amarillo, TX; David Toot of Granbury, TX; and Colin (Cindy) Toot of Kingsland, TX and her sister Marietta Snodgrass of Pinole, CA. Betty was proud of her 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her honor to further Macular Degeneration Research through the Brightfocus Foundation (brightfocus.org/macular). Betty will be laid to rest at a graveside service in Belpre Cemetery (KS) on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at 1 p.m. Honorary pallbearers are her grandsons: Brian Mitchell, Joshua Connelly, Shawn Toot, Jeremy Berry, Toby Lohman Fuller, Daniel Connelly, Cameron Toot, Zachary Toot, and Adam Brown. A woman of strength, love, humor and enduring grace, Betty’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew her. John Edwin Grummon, 80, passed away Nov. 21, 2023, at his home in Great Bend. He was born April 2, 1943, in Omaha, Neb., the son of American Baptist Missionaries Daniel and Elda (Goff) Grummon. After graduating in 1965 from Ottawa University, he married DeeAnne Baldwin.

John graduated from Central Baptist Theological Seminary in 1969, then served as a pastor at First Baptist Church, Marysville for five years, and at the Beloit-Simpson Baptist Parish for 22 years. In 1996, he began a new career as a hospital and hospice chaplain. John and DeeAnne moved to Great Bend, where he served as chaplain for CKMC and Golden Belt Home and Hospice until retiring in 2014. John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

John Grummon, age 80

Marjorie Diane Rodriquez, 66, passed away on Nov. 21, 2023, surrounded by loved ones at her home in Great Bend. She was born on Aug. 6, 1957, in Wichita, to Harold and Sue (Smith) Fortney. In 2002, she married Dave Rodriquez in Rocky Ford, Colo.

A resident of Great Bend, coming from Rose Hill, Marjorie formerly worked in catering and as a secretary. She enjoyed crafts, specifically making door wreaths, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband of the home; three daughters, Jennifer (David) Borowski of Henderson, Nev., Kristina (Jesse) Staab of Auburn; and Diana (Marci) Devera of Fairfield, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers-in-law, Mike, Fred, Paul and Gary Rodriquez; and numerous extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Deborah Fortney.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.

Mitchel A. “Mitch” Sommers – age 64 of Victoria, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at the Catholic Care Center in Bel Aire.

He was born Feb. 5, 1959, in Topeka to Donald A. and Irene (Peck) Sommers.

Mitch grew up in Delia and Victoria. He graduated from Victoria High School and Fort Hays State University. He taught school for a few years in Liberal then moved back to Ellis County. He was a guide at Sternberg Museum in Hays, taught classes, painted murals and back drops for exhibits, and volunteered a lot of time at the museum. He held stained glass classes and was a volunteer for the Hays Arts Council. He enjoyed his flower gardening, the arts, cooking, animals and his dogs.

He is survived by his brother, Michael Sommers, Ellis; his sister, Donna Funk, Otis; his step-sister, Cheryl Frederick and husband, Tom, Topeka; his former sister-in-law, Sharon Sommers, Victoria; his nieces and nephews, Richard Frederick (Mia); Robert Frederick; Brian Frederick; Donald Sommers (Sandra); Jamie Buehler; Phillip Funk (Jessica); Shane Sommers; Dawn Wasinger (Danny); his 14 great-nieces and great-nephews; one great-great-nephew; and a large extended group of friends.

Mitchel 'Mitch' Sommers, age 64

Daniel Thomas Hauck, 70, passed away Nov. 19, 2023, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. He was born Jan. 18, 1953, in Hutchinson, to Thomas Frank Hauck and Thelma Merleen (Leeper) Hauck.

Daniel was a proud member of the military, having served two terms in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1973, on the USS Jouett and from 1977 to 1981, on the USS Coral Sea.

He moved on to be a driver and mechanic for Chism’s Trash Service, in Great Bend. Daniel was not just an employee, but a friendly face to all on his route, from passing out candy for the kids, handing out treats for the furry friends, and being followed around and recorded by teens that were interested in his work.

On Feb. 14, 2000, he married the love of his life, Janice Lynn Goans. Janice brought along her daughter, Shawna, and Shawna’s daughter, Caitlin, that he grew an unconditional, lifelong bond with. Janice later passed away on April 22, 2007.

Daniel is survived by: his mother, Thelma M. Hembree of Hutchinson; children, Shawna Goans of McPherson, and Kevin (spouse Tammi) Schreiner of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Caitlin Schmitt of Lincoln, Neb., Nola Schreiner of Austin, Texas, and Gibson Schreiner of Austin, Texas; siblings, Mike Cooper of Hutchinson, Kelly (spouse Milton) Clevenger of Colwich, and Amenda Lobstein of Hutchinson, a God Daughter, Leanda Love Mooney, Leadville, Colo.; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his stepfather, George ‘Tommy’ Hembree; wife, Janice Lynn Hauck; brother, Robert Lee Hauck; and three infant sisters. If you knew Daniel, you most likely knew him as Dan, Danny, Dan-Dan the trash man, or Caitlin’s papa.

He was a devoted family man, and lifelong friend to many. His passion for his work, his wife, and his family never failed to shine.

Daniel Thomas Hauck, 70, passed away Nov. 19, 2023, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. He was born Jan. 18, 1953, in Hutchinson, to Thomas Frank Hauck and Thelma Merleen (Leeper) Hauck.Daniel was a proud member of the military, having served two terms in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1973, on the USS Jouett and from 1977 to 1981, on the USS Coral Sea.He moved on to be a driver and mechanic for Chism’s Trash Service, in Great Bend. Daniel was not just an employee, but a friendly face to all on his route, from passing out candy for the kids, handing out treats for the furry friends, and being followed around and recorded by teens that were interested in his work.On Feb. 14, 2000, he married the love of his life, Janice Lynn Goans. Janice brought along her daughter, Shawna, and Shawna’s daughter, Caitlin, that he grew an unconditional, lifelong bond with. Janice later passed away on April 22, 2007.Daniel is survived by: his mother, Thelma M. Hembree of Hutchinson; children, Shawna Goans of McPherson, and Kevin (spouse Tammi) Schreiner of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Caitlin Schmitt of Lincoln, Neb., Nola Schreiner of Austin, Texas, and Gibson Schreiner of Austin, Texas; siblings, Mike Cooper of Hutchinson, Kelly (spouse Milton) Clevenger of Colwich, and Amenda Lobstein of Hutchinson, a God Daughter, Leanda Love Mooney, Leadville, Colo.; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.He was preceded in death by: his stepfather, George ‘Tommy’ Hembree; wife, Janice Lynn Hauck; brother, Robert Lee Hauck; and three infant sisters. If you knew Daniel, you most likely knew him as Dan, Danny, Dan-Dan the trash man, or Caitlin’s papa.He was a devoted family man, and lifelong friend to many. Patrick (Pat) Dean Streck, born April 27, 1950, to Leonard and Joan (Powers) Streck, departed this life in true outdoorsman fashion and of natural causes, on a final pheasant hunt with friends, Nov. 18, 2023. He is preceded in death by the pheasant he had just harvested. 

Pat proudly served in both the Nebraska and Kansas National Guard, obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant, carrying on a family tradition of military service that extends back to the Spanish-American War. A Great Bend High School alumnus and former FHSU student, Pat pursued a successful career in sales. Starting as a traveling salesman for Brown &amp; Williamson Tobacco Co., he retired a very successful figure within the Kansas Agribusiness community. Even after retirement, Pat remained dedicated to the farming community, often working for some of the same people he once called on as customers, but now calls friends. 

Pat’s love of the outdoors is only surpassed by his love of family. On Jan.&nbsp; 4, 1986, he married Cindie Moran and raised four sons: Stuart, Timothy, Kelly and Scott. Together Pat and Cindie dedicated their lives to seeing their boys grow and prosper into men with love of God, Family and Country. Pat served as an elder of St. John’s Lutheran Church, was a competitor in the local trap shooting league, he volunteered with 4-H youth shooting sports and taught many years as a Kansas Hunters Education instructor for the State of Kansas. 

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Cindie; his sons Stuart (Jen) of Johns Creek, Georgia, Timothy (Tyra) of Newton, Kelly (Katie) of Lansing and Scott (Amy) of Spring Hill. Pat leaves behind seven grandchildren, his pride and pure joy: Kristian (Johns Creek, Georgia), Alexandria and Vaughn (Newton), James and Ella (Lansing) and Claire and Natalie (Spring Hill); his brother Kevin Brown (Tucson, Ariz.); brother-in-law and sister-in-law Grant and Rhonda Gaede. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Joan (Powers) Streck, and his special “adoptive” parents, Lyman and Esther Kruckenberg.

Bernice Catherine Petz, 96, passed away peacefully on Nov. 19, 2023, at Olathe Hospice House having spent the day with her children. Born Aug. 28, 1927, in Menlo, she was the daughter of Frank &amp; Rose (Mannebach) Moos. Bernice graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1945 and from Salt City Business College in Hutchinson. She married Raymond Petz on Dec. 30, 1947, in Ellinwood and they were married for nearly 63 years. He passed away Oct. 5, 2010.

A four-year resident of Olathe, Bernice was a longtime Ellinwood resident. She enjoyed a successful career as a legal assistant with G.I. Robinson, Attorney at Law; and later retired as an Executive Assistant to the President of Barton County Community College. Bernice enjoyed spending time with her family and friends as well as watching and attending sporting events including the Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas State Wildcats, and the Salina Liberty. She also followed her grand and great-grandchildren’s activities. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ellinwood; a member of the Altar Society; and the Daughters of Isabella, recognized for 75 years of service, including having served as Regent and State Regent. 

Survivors include sons, Kenneth (Jean) Petz, Thomas (Susan) Petz, Merle Petz, and Carl (Melinda) Petz; daughters, Kay (Larry) Thompson, Carmen (Francis) Flax, and Melba (Dan) Detmer; 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and sister Thelma (Moos) Cole; and several nieces and nephews. Bernice was preceded in death by husband Raymond Petz; her parents; brothers Gene, Richard and Larry; sisters Ermina Moos, Velma (Moos) Wornkey, and Delores (Moos) Bressler.

LaVern A. “Ace” Leiker, 87, formerly of Great Bend, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2023 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 11, 1936 in Hays, the son of Leo A. and Angela (Klaus) Leiker. In 1954, he graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy, and on August 6, 1965 he was united in marriage to Junalie Ann Archer in Hill City, and they celebrated 42 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on Sept. 20, 2007. For over 30 years, LaVern worked in oilfields for Koch Industry, retiring as a foreman. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish in Great Bend and the Great Bend Knights of Columbus Council #862. He enjoyed going to car races with Junalie, fishing, and being at the lake as much as possible. He was a University of Kansas basketball and Kansas City Chiefs fan. LaVern lived simply, was a man of faith, and loved his family.

Survivors include his daughter Karla Cordes of Lawrence, two brothers, Reinhold “Ronnie” Leiker and wife Diana and Art Leiker and wife Marilyn, both of Hays, a sister, Erma Dinges of Hays, four grandchildren, Josha Cates and husband Chris, and Shannon, Easton, and Kaidon Cordes, a great granddaughter, Jackie Cates, a great-grandson, C.J. Cates who will be born soon, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Junalie, three brothers, Herbert, Erwin “Erv”, and Kenneth Leiker, a sister, Norine Leiker, and an infant son, Ricky Leiker.

LaVern 'Ace' Leiker, age 87

Donna Loree Smolik, 83, passed away Nov. 17, 2023, at the University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend Campus. She was born Feb. 19, 1940, in Great Bend to Dan Ochs, Sr. and Violet (Shetler) Ochs. She married Richard Smolik Sept. 12, 1959, in Timken.

Being raised on a farm north of Otis and a lifetime Rush County resident, Donna worked as a cook and dietary manager for Rush County Nursing Home (Locust Grove), LaCrosse, for 34 years. Developing a good work ethic at an early age, she worked at her mother, Violet's, restaurant, The Nifty Nine, and also the Tastee Freeze, all of LaCrosse. She was also known to be an exceptional farm hand and an excellent cook, passing on her love of cooking to her daughter and grandchildren. When her children were in school, Donna attended all of their activities whenever she could and loved to watch KU basketball.

Donna was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Timken and attended Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend. Donna will be missed for her servant’s heart and always being ready to lend a hand where needed.

Survivors include, her husband Richard of the home; two sons, Ken Smolik and wife Kris of Great Bend and Gerald Smolik of Timken; a daughter, Mary Bieker and husband Darrell of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Scott Smolik and wife Cassie, Michael Smolik and wife Kendyll, Michala Bieker and Emma Bieker; three great-grandchildren, Olivia Smolik, Connor Smolik and Levi Smolik; and four step-great-grandchildren, Kadyn Schmidt, Carsyn Berggren, Brock Berggren and McKoy Berggren. Coming from Colby in 1974, Bill was a current Great Bend resident. He was an independent insurance adjuster for many years. He was a member of Foundry Community Church, The Gideons International and Promise Keepers. Bill enjoyed fishing and hunting but especially loved to spend time with his family.

Survivors include, his wife Sheryl of the home; two sons, Chad Terry and wife Sue of Castle Rock, Colo. and Shawn Terry and wife Kim of Loveland, Colo.; a daughter, Angie Berringer and husband Todd of Erie, Colo.; six grandchildren, Triston Berringer, Darby Berringer, Kalyssa Berringer, Rocco Terry, Payton Terry and Cameron Terry; and a great-grandson, William Berringer; three brothers, Cecil Terry and wife Mary of Aurora, Colo., Dean Terry and wife Donna of Superior, Neb. and Dwaine Meireis of Scott City.
