Norma Mae Hammeke, 91, passed away April 4, 2023, at her home in Great Bend, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 16, 1931, to Arza and Marie (Pekarek) Lamoree. She married Maurice Hammeke on March 2, 1954, in Great Bend.

A long time Great Bend resident, Norma was a customer service representative at Sears, specializing in maintenance service contracts. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Barton County Historical Society and was the former Executive Director of the United Way of Central Kansas. Being passionate about music, she was a dedicated member of St. Patrick Choir for over 50 years and served on the Golden Belt Community Concert Association Board. Norma belonged to several bridge clubs and enjoyed fellowship with friends at the Senior Center and American Legion.

Survivors include, her husband Maurice Hammeke of Great Bend; her children, Marla Redburn and husband Dennis of Great Bend, Lynda Ford and husband Earl of Olathe, Vince Hammeke and wife Tina of Overland Park and JoElla Tobin and husband Bill of Lawrence; ten grandchildren, Dustin Sullivan, Trilby Haller (Rob), Colby Sullivan (Brandy), Lynzee Al-Hakeem (David), Taylor Ford, Cressa Felts (Justin), Jensyn Ford (Matt Gaborie), Andrew Hammeke (Taellor), Ryan Hammeke and Adam Hammeke (Kasey); 25 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren, with one more to arrive in August. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ron Hammeke; a brother, Floyd E. Lamoree; and a sister, Irene Pack.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 5, 2023, with an Altar Society Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and Parish Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, April 6, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Father Prakash Kola presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. Carol Jean Miller, 84, of Salina, passed away Tuesday, March 28th, 2023.

Carol was born in Hoisington, Kansas, on April 10, 1938, a daughter of the late Tina Luvenia (Smith) and John Paul Miller.

Survivors
 include her two daughters, Rayshonette  Miller, of Salina, Kansas, Tina
 Miller, of Kansas City, Missouri; 6 grandchildren, Tamitrua Wilkins, 
Jere Thomas, Darius Thomas, Braxton Flemming, Brenan Latimer, Corey 
Latimer; 14 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren; and many 
nieces and nephews.

Carol is also survived by her sister, Dorla "Deane" Hudson, of Salina, Kansas.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Geraldine Miller, Beverly Moon, Barbara Minnis; brother, Jerome Miller.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 22, 2023, at St. John's Missionary Baptist Church.

Carol Jean Miller, age 84

Charles W. Schaffer, 79, died April 2, 2023, with his family at his side, at Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse, Kansas. He was born April 12, 1943, in Hays, Kansas, the seventh child of Vincent and Olinda (Obholz) Schaffer. He attended school in Schoenchen and later served in the Army National Guard.

On July 27, 1964, he married Ilene Schuckman in La Crosse, Kansas. She preceded him in death on August 7, 1971. He then married Karolyn M. Schaffer on December 2, 1972, in Olmitz, Kansas.

Charles was a farmer and had also worked as a rig mechanic for Red Tiger Drilling. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church where he sang in the choir. Charles loved tinkering, especially welding and working on small engine repair. He loved a good card game and golfing, a game which he took up in retirement and thoroughly enjoyed, wishing he had started earlier in life. Thus leading to a membership in the La Crosse Country Club. He also enjoyed delivering friendship meals around the county for the past 10 + years. His family remembers his love of baking, where he was well known for his cinnamon rolls, angel food cake, and his “beerox”.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Karolyn M. Schaffer of the home; and three children, Charnell Breshears and husband John of La Crosse, Kevin Schaffer and significant other Anita Shepard of Bison, Laurie Post and husband Kevin of Lincoln, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Josh Breshears, Jonna Skinner and husband Tim, Emma Post and Kayla Post; five great grandchildren, Preslie, Gabbie, and Josie Breshears and Desmond and Cooper Skinner; six siblings, Virginia Dreiling of Hays, Paul Schaffer, Joseph Schaffer, and Kenneth Schaffer all of California, Gladys Haugaard of Illinois, and Mary Ann Gariepy of Derby.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ilene Schaffer, and brothers, Virgil, Jerry, Dennis, and Irvin Schaffer.

Friends may sign the book today through Friday at the funeral home. Their will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

Family will greet friends prior to the rosary on Sunday, April 9th, at 6 p.m. with Rosary beginning at 7 p.m., all at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse.

Jack Andrew Teeter, 86, passed away in Great Bend, KS on April 1, 2023. Born on June 19, 1936 in Wauseon, OH he was the son of Dillard and Gladys (Busani) Teeter. Jack was a Kansas City (Turner) resident from 1957-2015. 

Jack served in the Navy from 1955-1959. He married Dianna Louise Lynch on August 17, 1957 in Brenner Ridge, MO. They moved to Great Bend, KS in 2015. She passed away on February 27, 2022.

He worked at Mid-Continent Cold Storage in Bonner Springs, Kansas. He enjoyed metal detecting and belonged to metal detecting clubs in Kansas City and Hutchinson, Ks. He was also a member of the Heartland Dalmatian Club.

Survivors include daughters, Martha Ann Socolofsky, Topeka, KS, Tammy (John) Sturn, Ellinwood, KS, Lori Jane (Michael) Spuehler, Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Jason Socolofsky, Justin Socolofsky, Lainie Sturn, Lauren Spare, Eli Sturn, Brandon Spuehler, Heidi Hood; 8 great-grandchildren.

Jack was predeceased by beloved wife of 64 years, Dianna and brother, Ronald Dillard Teeter; step brother, Ira Teeter; and step sister, Virginia Mendenhall.

Jack Teeter, age 86

Joyce Marie Thompson (Gore) passed away on Saturday April 1, 2023, at Prairie Sunset Home in Pretty Prairie, Kansas. Joyce was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She passed away at the age of 89 after battling Dementia for the past 14 years.

Joyce was born on February 12, 1934, in Tuskahoma, Oklahoma, to Ulysses S. Young and Lennie Audie (Haynes) Young. She came from a large family with five brothers: Cecil Young, Melvin Young, Selbert Young, James Young, Tom Young, and two sisters: Bernice Calhoun, and Nita Melick. Her family remained in Oklahoma during her early years and eventually moved to El Dorado, Kansas,&nbsp; a few years after her mother died when Joyce was 8 years old. She attended school in El Dorado and later met the love of her life, Alvin Keith Gore. They married on January 16, 1953, and together they raised a family of four children: Steven, Dianna, Monte, and Gayla.

Joyce was a Christian and had an infectious smile and warm heart. She was indeed a caregiver and always looked for the best in everyone she met. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren immensely. She loved the smell and beauty of flowers and enjoyed listening to music and singing hymns that she learned as a young child. Chocolate was her guilty pleasure.

Joyce was always determined to succeed in everything she did. Her work outside the home included positions as a terminal manager for Morgan Drive Away in Plainville, KS, a clerk for the Barton County Treasurer’s Office in Great Bend, KS, and co-owner and office manager for Gore Trucking in Plainville, KS until she retired.

Joyce was preceded in death by her mother and father, her in-laws, her five brothers, sister Bernice, her husband Alvin Gore, daughter Dianna Mock, her second husband Alan Thompson, granddaughter Danielle Gore, infant grandson Brett Gore, and infant great-granddaughter Zavery Gore.

She is survived by her sons Steven Gore Sr. and wife LuAnn of Palmyra, PA and Monte Gore of Bainbridge, PA; son-in-law Phillip Mock of OKC, OK; daughter Gayla Puthoff and husband Fred of Wichita, KS; sister Nita Melick and husband John of Mulvane, KS; and thirteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Celebration of life services are planned for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 6, 2023, at the First Christian Church in Plainville. Burial will follow in Plainville City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home home.

Calvin Leroy “Trapper” Calp, 75, passed away on March 31, 2023, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born on May 27, 1947, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Austin and Lillian (Tuzicka) Calp. In 1981, he married Elizabeth Myers-Springer in Great Bend. She survives.

A lifelong area resident, Calvin owned and operated Calp Furs. He also worked as a bartender at Slacks. In his spare time, he enjoyed riding motorcycles in his young years. Calvin was an outstanding trapper and fisherman, and was revered by many in the area.

Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Calvin Calp, Jr. and significant other, Tracey, of Salina; a daughter, Carrie Holland of Tennessee; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a half-sister, Betty Puckett of Texas; a half-brother, Alvin Brazda of Las Vegas, Nev.; and a stepson, Leonard Mumford and significant other, Jozette. He is preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Charles “Charley” Calp.

Calvin 'Trapper' Calp, age 75

Devastation struck one-half mile from home. Ron Kelly of Ellinwood was involved in a single-vehicle accident. Life watched to Wesley Medical Center, loved ones by his side, Ronald Wilfred Kelly 83, of Ellinwood passed away on Friday March 24, 2023. Ron was an amazing husband to his wife, Kay, for nearly 62 years. He was a loving father, fun grandfather, and the perfect example of a true gentleman.

Born Oct. 3, 1939 in Barrhead, Alberta Canada to Wilford and Ida Kelly, Ron was the third child of five siblings.

By age 15, he participated in Golden Glove Boxing and hockey. At age 16, the family moved to Santa Monica, Calif., working in the family meat locker plant and a small family restaurant. In Canoga Park, Calif., Ron met the only true love of his life and, in time, married Kay Elizabeth Gardner on April 24, 1961. Soon after, Ron was called to duty and stationed at Langley Air Force Base. Military life found the newlyweds moving from base to base and they soon started a family with first-born son, John Howard.

While Ron served in the Air Force, he took many study courses, earning several certificates of completion. By 1969, Ron and Kay brought their two children to settle in Ellinwood, where they raised all three children.

Ronnie volunteered within the community, including the delivery of Meals on Wheels, German Buffet, and entertaining those who love accordion music. A passion for adventure, be it by motorcycle or vehicle, this led Ron and Kay to the Colorado Rockies for many years, bringing home fishing stories and fond memories. He loved camping, fires, making new friends, kids, boating, motorcycles, puzzles, cards, board games, reading, history, family traditions, and mechanics. A gentle soul, jolly laugh, positive attitude, huge heart, meaningful hugs, never a negative word.

Memorial service will take place 2 p.m., April 22, 2023, at Minnis Chapel in Ellinwood, with Pastor Thomas Thierfelder, followed by inurnment at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery in Ellinwood with military honors. Life watched to Wesley Medical Center, loved ones by his side, Ronald Wilfred Kelly 83, of Ellinwood passed away on Friday March 24, 2023. Ron was an amazing husband to his wife, Kay, for nearly 62 years. He was a loving father, fun grandfather, and the perfect example of a true gentleman.Born Oct. 3, 1939 in Barrhead, Alberta Canada to Wilford and Ida Kelly, Ron was the third child of five siblings.By age 15, he participated in Golden Glove Boxing and hockey. At age 16, the family moved to Santa Monica, Calif., working in the family meat locker plant and a small family restaurant. In Canoga Park, Calif., Ron met the only true love of his life and, in time, married Kay Elizabeth Gardner on April 24, 1961. Soon after, Ron was called to duty and stationed at Langley Air Force Base. Military life found the newlyweds moving from base to base and they soon started a family with first-born son, John Howard.While Ron served in the Air Force, he took many study courses, earning several certificates of completion. By 1969, Ron and Kay brought their two children to settle in Ellinwood, where they raised all three children.Ronnie volunteered within the community, including the delivery of Meals on Wheels, German Buffet, and entertaining those who love accordion music. Richard Lee Rolo, 52, of Lubbock, Texas, formerly of Great Bend, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at his home. He was born on Sept. 5, 1970 in Pratt to Barry Lee and Marcella Eileen (Randle) Rolo. Richard graduated from Great Bend High School. He worked as a clerk for 7/11. He is survived by his father, Barry Rolo of Lubbock; some aunts and uncles; and several cousins.&nbsp;Richard is preceded in death by his mother, Eileen Rolo and sister, Sherry Roxann Rolo. Cremation has taken place. A Graveside Memorial service will be held at a later date at Iuka Cemetery, Iuka. David L. Mull, 64, passed away March 31, 2023, at Hospice House in Hutchinson. He was born&nbsp;on Nov. 23, 1958, in Great Bend, to Charles &amp; Mary Anne (Merten) Mull, and raised on a farm north of Pawnee Rock . He later moved to Great Bend and graduated from Great Bend High School, and attended automotive classes at Barton Community College. He married Sandy Miller in 1980, in Great Bend.

David farmed and owned Mull Landscaping before later working for Lance, Inc., Harkers Distribution, and then retiring from Frito Lay in 2016. David was a past member of the Great Bend Coop, Noon Lions Club, Elks Club, and Board of Directors of Barton Farm Bureau. He enjoyed muscle cars, driving anywhere, working in the yard, KC Chiefs football, overnight trips, and his dog, Roxy.

Survivors include, his wife, Sandy of 42 years of the home; a son, Marcus Mull of Great Bend; a brother, Robert Mull of Seattle, Wash.; a sister, Emily Ferri and husband Joe of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and special friends, Larry Lancaster, Ralph Reichuber and Leon Haselhorst. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary Anne Mull.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 17, 2023, at First Christian Church, with Reverend Joshua Leu presiding. Inurnment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery. Ryan Neil “Boonie” Kleweno, 48, passed away on March 22, 2023, at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, Kan. He was born on May 10, 1974, in Ransom, Kan., to Donald “Donnie” and Connie (Gross) Kleweno.

Growing up in LaCrosse and Bazine, and later living in Hays and Great Bend, Ryan worked as a tile mechanic installing all types of flooring, along with different shop jobs. He was a free spirit, uninhibited, and went where life took him. Ryan was an animal lover and his passions included RC cars, riding ATVs and motorcycles. He especially loved spending time with family and friends. Ryan will be remembered for his good heart and willingness to give and help where he could.

Survivors include his son, Adam Kleweno of Henryetta, Okla.; two brothers, Lonnie (Pamela Venn) Kennedy of Charlotte, N.C., and Jason Kleweno of Columbia, Mo.; a niece, Nicole (Craig Sharp) Kennedy-Sharp of Wichita, Kan.; two nephews, Michael and Davey Kennedy, both of Wichita, Kan.; significant other, Laura Stevenson; co-parent, Andrea Strobel-Guynes; and four half sisters. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Mark Kennedy; and grandparents, Adam and Helen Gross.

Ryan 'Boonie' Kleweno, age 48

Joyce Lee (Wray) Shriner, 87, of Geneseo, Kansas, passed away March 27, 2023, at the Salina Presbyterian Manor, Salina, Kansas. She was born July 10, 1935, in Salinas, California, the daughter of Ernest E. and Lydia M. (Galyardt) Wray. 

Joyce resided in Geneseo for 69 years, and was formerly of Lyons, Kansas. She graduated from Lyons High School, with the class of 1953. Joyce was a homemaker. She worked for the United States Postal Service from 1977 until retiring in 1997. 

Joyce was a member of the Geneseo United Methodist Church, where she served on numerous church committees, sang in the church choir, and taught Sunday School. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Geneseo, Girl Scouts of America, and the Geneseo Ladies Thanksgiving Club. Joyce served on the Rice County Election Board and Geneseo Library Board. 

She enjoyed singing, reading, cooking, and spending time with family. 

On August 29, 1953, Joyce was united in marriage with James William “Jim” Shriner in Lincoln, Kansas. He preceded her in death on October 3, 2021. She is also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jack Wray; sister-in-law, Marlyn Wray; brother-in-law, Jim Ludes; son-in-law, David Phillips. 

Joyce is survived by her three children, Jamie Lea Shriner Hart and husband Randall of Midwest City, OK, Jerri Lynn Shriner Phillips of Salina, KS, and James Wayne Shriner of Geneseo and girlfriend Dianna Lange of Lyons, KS; sister, Evelyn Ludes of Great Bend, KS; eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. 

Funeral service will be at 10:00 A.M., Monday, April 3, 2023, at the Geneseo United Methodist Church, Geneseo, with Pastor Steve Holmes officiating. Burial will follow at the Geneseo Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M., Sunday, April 2, 2023, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with family present.

Mia Jade Roth, 4 months

Larry G. Miller, 84, died Sunday, March 26, 2023, at Penrose Hospital in
 Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was born May 13, 1938, in Garden City, 
Kansas, the son of Alvin Charles Henry &amp; Agnes Helenia (Tiemeyer) 
Miller. 
 Larry grew up on a farm near Ingalls, Kansas. He attended Ingalls 
schools and Graduated from High School in 1956. He then attended St. 
Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City, Kansas. Larry served in the 
United States Army from 1960 to 1966.

On February 7, 1966, he married 
Anna Marlene Rohling in Ingalls, Kansas. They lived in Ingalls for a 
short time before moving to Great Bend, Kansas in 1968. Larry worked at
 Dresser Atlas Oil Field Operations. In 1982, they moved back to 
Ingalls where Larry worked in farming. He then worked for the Gray 
County Road Department until his retirement in 2000. Larry and his wife
 moved to Garden City in 2015 where they have lived since. 
 He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City; a 
member of the Ingalls Knights of Columbus; and an auxiliary member of 
the Legion of Mary Church of the Nativity in Burke, Virginia. He 
enjoyed handyman work around the house, making rosaries, and singing. 
 Survivors include his wife A. Marlene Miller of the home; children 
Debra Miller of Garden City, KS, Elaine (Ted) Ivy of Frisco, TX, Annette
 (Jason) Trober of Wichita, KS, and Andy (Ericka) Miller of Austin, TX; a
 granddaughter Emily Pietersz of Frisco, TX; and two sisters Georgiann 
Keller of San Jose, CA, and Jane Hamilton of Lorton, VA. Larry is 
preceded in death by his parents; a son Chris Miller; and a brother 
Melvin Miller.

Larry G. Miller, age 84

Mary Lois Fletchall, 98, died peacefully March 27, 2023, at Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born May 2, 1924, in Jackson County, Kansas, to Arthur and Effie (Kroth) Venneberg.

Mary graduated from Havensville High School, Havensville, KS, and attended Strickler Business College in Topeka.&nbsp; She worked three years at Southwestern Bell Telephone, and after moving to Hutchinson, Mary taught at Hook Playschool for 13 years.&nbsp; She enjoyed quilting, winning many ribbons at the Kansas State Fair.&nbsp; Mary was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, taught Sunday school, was a Stephen Minister, and helped make church banners.&nbsp; She was a devoted mother and grandmother and looked forward to phone calls and visits from her family.

On May 31, 1946, Mary married Glenn Lloyd Fletchall.&nbsp; They lived in Sabetha, Kansas for 10 years, before moving to Hutchinson in 1957.&nbsp; Glenn died June 19, 2005, after they shared 59 years of marriage.

Mary is survived by:&nbsp; daughter, Janie Peterson of Hutchinson; sons, Mark Fletchall (Lynné) of Wichita, Randy Fletchall (Vickie) of Scottsdale, AZ, Mike Fletchall (Brenda) of Roseville, MN, and Craig Fletchall (Patty) of Great Bend; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren;

Mary Fletchall, age 98

Joann Marie (Huss) Malone, 93, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2023, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Joann was born December 21, 1929, on the family farm 5 miles west of Herndon, Kansas.&nbsp; She was one of eight children born to John and Emma (Keplinger) Huss.&nbsp; She attended over eight years in rural country schools.&nbsp; She was a graduate of Herndon High School in the Class of ‘47.

Joann was united in marriage to John H. Leitner on June 19, 1948.&nbsp; This union was blessed with a son Bruce.&nbsp; They divorced, and later she met and was united in marriage to Francis Gerald “Tim” Malone on November 28, 1950.&nbsp; This union was blessed with five children: Jerry, Rosalie, Nancy, John, and James.&nbsp; They made their home in Herndon.&nbsp; Tim preceded her in death on September 28, 1986.

Joann was a devoted wife and homemaker for her children.&nbsp; Early in life, she worked in the post office in Herndon. While her boys were in college, she worked for the local IGA Grocery store in Herndon and for Gwen’s Plumbing &amp; Heating in Oberlin.&nbsp; She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Christians Mothers in Herndon, KS.&nbsp; Upon moving to Russell in 2002, she was an active parishioner of St. Mary’s Queen of Angels Catholic Church and the Russell Council of Catholic Women.&nbsp; She enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle, square dancing and was a proud member of the Shooting Stars Dance Club.&nbsp; She loved her family and friends but her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the apple of her eye.

Joann’s surviving family include her two daughters, Rosalie Wilkinson (Brad) of Chanute, Kansas, and Nancy Malone of Muskogee, Oklahoma; three sons, Bruce Leitner of Oxford, Georgia, John Malone of Russell, Kansas, and James Malone (Jamie) of Russell, Kansas; ten grandchildren, David Leitner (Audrey) of Conyer, Georgia, Rory Leitner of Germany, Quenton Wynn of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, Jill Henning (Mark) of Naperville, Illinois, James Wynn (Vanessa) of Norman, Oklahoma, Kayla Newman (Todd) of Chanute, Kansas, Randee Olive of Andover, Kansas, Joanna Orschelen (Billy) of Prairie Village, Kansas, Megan Wynn-Jasso (Marco) of Dallas, Texas and Juliana Willis (Ryan) of Overland Park, Kansas; and 18 great grandchildren.

Joann was preceded in death by her parents; husband Tim; three brothers, Donald Huss, John Huss Jr., and Larry Huss; four sisters, Marion Huss, Emalou Sattler, Madonna Anderson and Celene Dunker; and her son Jerry Malone.

Joann Marie (Huss) Malone, age 93

James (Jim) Willis Feil, 67, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, March 24, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Jim was born July 4, 1955, in Stockton, Kansas. He was the son of Willis Leo and Georgia Marie (Mai) Feil. He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School with the Class of ‘73. He attended The University of Kansas for one year before transferring to Fort Hays State University. He continued college there until he made the selfless decision to put his education on hold to provide for his family instead. In 1989, he returned to FHSU and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.

When Jim met his soulmate, Jaci Lee Beeman, he fell in love with her instantly. His best friend had never heard him speak in such a way about a girl. Jim knew he would marry Jaci someday. Jaci knew she would marry Jim someday. They are high school sweethearts and were united in marriage on June 7, 1980. This union was blessed with their son, Ryan James and daughter, Lindsay Lee. They made their one and only family home on Ash Street in Russell.

When Jim was younger, he worked for Revell Oil Field Construction as a roustabout and later became a pumper for Fina Oil Company. Jim worked as an insurance agent for United Services Agency of Russell, which was later purchased by Insurance Planning, Inc. of Hays, Kansas. He worked as the office manager and insurance agent for 25 years before retiring in 2019. Jim always had faith and gave grace as he was a christian and a proud member of St. John Lutheran Church. He attended church regularly with his family for many years and felt the urge to stream the service online the Sunday before he passed.

Jim was a kind and gentle man who always put others before himself. If something needed to be fixed or built, he found a way to do it. He was involved with coaching both his children in recreational sports which, in turn, inspired their desire to coach as well. Watching his grandsons compete in a variety of sports brought him such joy. He absolutely adored his granddaughter and loved spending time with her. He enjoyed watching KU Basketball and hanging out with family and friends at the lake. If he wasn’t at the lake, you could find him at their pool. He was a wonderful host and made everyone feel welcome because he wanted to share his little slice of paradise with everyone he loved.

Jim’s surviving family include his wife of 42 years, Jaci of the home; daughter, Lindsay Homeier (Bobby) of Great Bend, Kansas; son, Ryan Feil (Erica) of Russell, Kansas; brothers, Bob Feil (Tracy) of Marshalltown, Iowa and Alan Feil of Salina, Kansas; three grandchildren, Bryson Feil, Lawson Feil and Jayde Feil all of Russell; niece, Jessica Dumler of Topeka, Kansas and nephews, Chris Feil of Salina, Kansas and Kellin Feil of Newton, Iowa; and many friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Brenda Kay.

Celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, March 30, 2023 at St. John Lutheran Church. A private burial of ashes will follow at a later date. James 'Jim' Feil, age 67

Awad Abdelrahim Abdelgadir Abu Hulayga was born in 1954 in Az-Zawrat village on the bank of the Nile River in the Northern Province of Sudan. He was the son of Abdelrahim Abdelgadir Abu Hulayga and Maryam Saeed Ahmed. He died on March 7, 2023, after fighting a long illness, at the age of 69.

Awad was educated at Dongola Boarding School and studied law at the University of Omdurman. In 1977, he moved to the Republic of Yemen, where he worked as a legal advisor and later taught Arabic and ESL at the Sana’a International School. During the years he lived in Yemen, Awad traveled throughout the country and enjoyed friendships with many people from all walks of life. He was active in expatriate affairs, including community theater and the Highest Hash House Harriers, a mountain trail running club. He married fellow Hasher Linda Boxberger in Sana’a in 1986.

In 1988, Awad and Linda moved to Austin, Texas, to attend graduate school. Awad earned a Master’s degree in Early Child Development at Southwest Texas State University. Mentored by Dr. Kathleen Fite, he developed a “Life on the Nile” presentation that he gave at schools, museums, and other organizations in central Texas as well as nationally. He wanted to share his love for his village, his ancestral heritage, and Nubian culture with people in his new home country.

Awad founded Nile Valley Herbs, a small business that sells hibiscus tea throughout the United States. He loved introducing people to the healthy herbal tea he enjoyed drinking in his village. Awad also taught Arabic at The University of Texas at Austin and St. Edward’s University.

A member of the South Austin Rotary Club, Awad was a firm believer in its precept “Service Before Self.” To honor the memory of his mother, Awad created the Mother Maryam Foundation for Humanitarian Development, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that implements community-based projects improving education, health care, and water quality in the agricultural area in Northern Sudan from which he came.

Awad was buried in a private service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mother Maryam Foundation, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Awad Abdelrahim Abdelgadir, age 69

John M. Heinz, age 83, longtime resident of Great Bend, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, March 22, 2023 in Great Bend.&nbsp; John was born on Dec. 12, 1939, in Great Bend to Lawrence and Evelyn (Kimpler) Heinz.&nbsp; He graduated from Bushton Rural High School in 1957, and served in the U.S. Navy on active duty from December of 1961 until April of 1966.&nbsp; 

John was a real estate broker and owner of Heinz Real Estate and Property Management in Great Bend for more than 30 years prior to his retirement. He was of the Catholic faith and a member of&nbsp;Knights of Columbus Council #862,&nbsp;American Legion Post #180, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3111, all of Great Bend, Kansas. John never liked to sit still. He was a "workaholic" and his farming youth never left his blood. When he wasn't working, his favorite pastime was attending his grandkids'&nbsp; sporting events and activities. He loved working in the yard, watching his KC Chiefs, and was an “avid” coffee drinker. He enjoyed traveling, going to casinos and spending time with family and friends.&nbsp;

Heinz, age 83, longtime resident of Great Bend, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, March 22, 2023 in Great Bend.&nbsp; John was born on Dec. 12, 1939, in Great Bend to Lawrence and Evelyn (Kimpler) Heinz.&nbsp; He graduated from Bushton Rural High School in 1957, and served in the U.S. Navy on active duty from December of 1961 until April of 1966.&nbsp; John was a real estate broker and owner of Heinz Real Estate and Property Management in Great Bend for more than 30 years prior to his retirement. He was of the Catholic faith and a member of&nbsp;Knights of Columbus Council #862,&nbsp;American Legion Post #180, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3111, all of Great Bend, Kansas. John never liked to sit still. He was a "workaholic" and his farming youth never left his blood. When he wasn't working, his favorite pastime was attending his grandkids'&nbsp; sporting events and activities. He loved working in the yard, watching his KC Chiefs, and was an “avid” coffee drinker. He enjoyed traveling, going to casinos and spending time with family and friends.&nbsp;John is survived by his daughter, Kristi K. John Heinz, age 83

The final curtain has closed on the 
magnificent life of the gifted Casey Charles Rohrer who passed 
peacefully at home on February 21, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
 Casey was born on May 22, 2002, in Torrance, CA when a birth injury 
caused Cerebral Palsy.

Despite this devastating diagnosis, Casey lived a most spectacular 
and full life. The introduction at age seven of his "Tobii." an eye gaze
 communication device, afforded him the opportunity to finally let the 
world hear his voice. Over the course of his life he shared his thoughts
 and opinions on a myriad of subjects and occasions. However, it was 
musical theatre which sparked his greatest creative and imaginative 
achievements. His first big break came when he landed the role as "The 
Mirror" in an elementary school production of "Snow White." Later he was
 cast as ‘The Silent King’ in Family Theatre’s production of "Once Upon a
 Mattress." As part of Anchorless Productions’ cast of ‘The Lion King’ 
he brought to life the character of kingly Mufasa, as well as Uncle Joe 
in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Casey’s skills as a playwright emerged as he wrote and later starred 
in his first play ‘Once Upon a Roadtrip’ the comical journey of him and 
his family as they made their way through Yellowstone. Over the past 
year, Casey completed the script for the story of his life, which he aptly
 named "Casey: The Musical," in which he highlights the importance of 
friends and friendships. Casey’s love of the theatre brought him to the 
bright lights of New York City where he was captivated by The Lion King 
and then invited backstage after the performance of Aladdin. He got to 
realize his dream of being on stage of a Broadway musical.

Casey was also a successful motivational speaker being invited to San
 Francisco by Microsoft/Tobii Dynavox and to New York City by CVS 
Pharmacy. His first speech was at his 8th grade graduation, and he went 
on to write and give speeches at UCLA, StemCyte, Beverly Hills Medical 
Science Academy, as well as several local elementary schools.

Casey’s smile was infectious, his laugh contagious and his outlook on
 life never-endingly positive. His adventurous and exciting journey 
through life was admirably addictive to watch from the outside. We all 
wanted to live vicariously through this boy whose dreams became his 
reality.

Casey’s magical life is celebrated by his devoted parents Matt and 
Beth (Palmer), his siblings Luke and Anna, his paternal grandmother 
Beverly Rohrer (Princeville, Hawaii) and maternal grandparents Lon and 
Ann Palmer (Hoisington, KS). He was predeceased by his grandfather Don 
Rohrer. Casey’s zest for life will be sorely missed by his aunts, 
uncles, and cousins as well as his many teachers, therapists, the 
talented doctors and nurses at UCLA Medical Center, his theater cohorts 
and his dear friends who had the pleasure of spending time with him over
 the years.

A Memorial for Casey will be held on March 25th at the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach, Calif.

Casey Charles Rohrer, age 20

Blake E. Herres, 70, of Hoisington, Kansas, passed away March 23, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was born in Hoisington, Kansas, to Mary Ellen “Jill” Herres and James Edward “Ed” Herres on August 13, 1952. Blake was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in March of 2021 and was ready for battle. He was willing to complete any surgery or treatment offered to him. Although the battle was eventually lost, he fought to the bitter end. Although he had the excitement of seeing those loved ones who have passed, he was taken too soon and wanted more time with his children and grandchildren.

Blake attended Roosevelt Elementary School, Hoisington Junior High, and then graduated from Hoisington High School in 1970 where he developed lifelong friendships and an appreciation for learning. Growing up as a Kansas State Wildcat fan, he attended Kansas State University where he belonged to the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Pre-Med in 1974. He remained a passionate Kansas State University football and men’s and women’s basketball fan. Blake worked in the oil field prior to attending the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry. Blake met Julie L. Stone in Manhattan and they married on May 10, 1975. They moved to Hoisington in 1979 where Blake started his dental practice which lasted until his retirement in the Fall of 2022.

Blake thoroughly enjoyed small-town living where the country was always at his doorstep. He was an avid outdoorsman with his favorite outdoor time being spent fishing for walleye with his Dad, girls or sons-in law, hunting for pheasants and geese, and attending his annual turkey hunt in Arkansas or Missouri with his long-time hunting buddies. He was an active member of the Hoisington Gun Club. He always took a moment to appreciate the fresh air and to take a walk at the farm. He made sure that his daughters were taught the value of nature and to appreciate their surroundings.

Blake was a volunteer coach in Hoisington ranging from his Pre-Molars tee ball teams up through various softball and basketball teams until school sports began in 7th Grade. He served on the USD 431 school board 12 years, including 5 years as President. His school board stint involved navigating the school district through the aftermath of the Hoisington tornado in 2001. “Once a Cardinal, Always a Cardinal” rang true for Blake. His support of the Hoisington Cardinals never waned, even after his girls had graduated from high school. He frequented as many Cardinal sporting events as time would allow. His most recent and maybe most enjoyable hobby was being the color commentator on the radio for the Hoisington Cardinals calling games for the football and basketball teams. Blake started as the color commentator in 2001 and called his last game on December 13, 2022 where the Cardinals played Sterling at home. Even after his disease didn’t allow him to call any more games, the radio dial was always set to 100.7 F.M. when the Cardinals were playing.

He instilled in his daughters that as long as you work hard, you can play hard too. He took the girls on annual vacations where he introduced them to his love of music making a “pick hits” tape for every trip that included his favorite tunes ranging from Gordon Lightfoot, The Beatles, bluegrass, rock -and-roll and folk music. Music was always playing in the Herres household and permeated throughout the house and their many adventures.

He is survived by his children: Sarah J. Linsner (Kevin), Hoisington; Hannah R. Herres, Wichita; and Addie L. Baird (Zach), Hoisington. He will be forever cherished and remembered by his grandchildren: Ella Linsner, Vivien Linsner, Lydia Linsner, Dominic Gloria, Dakota Gloria, Halle Baird, Cordell Baird, and Mylee Baird, and one sister, Kimberly A. Herres. He is preceded in death by his parents, and Julie L. Herres.

Friends may sign the book 12 - 6 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 27, 2023, at Concordia Lutheran Church, with Pastor Gary Wolf presiding. Inurnment will be in Hoisington Cemetery.

Glennis Margaret Durand, 94, died Feb. 14, 2023, at Town Hall Estates in Arlington, Texas. Born Sept. 17, 1928, in Hoisington, she was the daughter of Emil &amp; Helen (Remley) Pflughoeft.&nbsp;In 1946, she graduated from Hoisington High School. She married the love of her life, George Leroy Durand, on July 20, 1947.

Glennis lived in Great Bend, and was a dedicated secretary for the General Adjustment Bureau for more than 30 years. Her passions in life included being a wife &amp; mother, crocheting, crafting, collecting antiques, preserving family memorabilia, and spending time with friends &amp; family. Mrs. Durand was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, local square-dancing club, and an active participant in the American Legion with her husband.

Survivors include her two daughters, Kathy Hancock &amp; husband Randy of Arlington, Texas, and Colleen Stevenson of Rockledge, Fla.; six grandchildren, Kelly Schmitt &amp; wife Kim of Wichita, Dawn Buhrkuhl &amp; husband Joey of Arlington, Monica Dow &amp; husband John of Northlake, Texas, Tiffany Mansell &amp; husband Shane of Arlington, Mark Stevenson &amp; wife Michelle of Hanover, M.D., and Michelle Popilek &amp; husband Scott of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla; &amp; 12 great-grandchildren.&nbsp;She was preceded in death by two sisters, Elaine “Daisy” Briley &amp; Patricia L. Glennis Durand, age 94

Marshall P. Reece, 69, passed away March 14, 2023, at Azria Health in Great Bend. He was born on Jan. 21, 1954, in Kansas City, Mo. to Jack and Frances (Pagano) Reece. He graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School and attended Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Mo., and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He then studied on and received his Master’s of Public Administration from Rockhurst University and graduated from the Wyoming Department of Corrections Academy. He married Rochelle Luckey on July 7, 1997, in Las Vegas, Nev. She died March 2, 2003.

Marshall was proud of his life’s work and certifications, including his Kansas Emergency Substitute Teacher’s License, Pharmacy Technician License for Kansas and Missouri, FCC Radiotelegraph Operator License and Amateur Radio Extra Class Licenses. He was the Business Manger and Interim Superintendent of Larned States Hospital, Wyoming State Penitentiary Business Manager and Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp Business Manager.

Marshall also spent his life volunteering and dedicating his time through many civil defense agencies, including Second Chance Sheridan Cat Rescue, The Catz Meow Cat Transport, Underground Railroad: Rescued Kitty Network, the International Cat Association, the Miniature Horse Association, American Radio Relay League, Kaw Valley Amateur Radio Club, Larned Volunteer Fire Department, and Kansas Peace Officers Association. He was also the dispatcher and emergency communications operator for the Larned Police Department, Edwards County Sheriff's Department and Kiowa County Sheriff's Department.

Survivors include his daughter at heart, Renee McVey of Macksville; his many friends and supporters including, his best buddy Bill Clapham and Scott King both of Larned, Kendal and Lorena Lothman of Haviland; as well as his loving fur babies: Spyder, Peake and George who are located at the Second Chance Sheridan Cat Rescue in Wyoming, currently. He was preceded in death by his parents; and loving wife, Rochelle.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, March 31, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Jeffrey Owen presiding. Marshall Reece, age 69

Norman Joseph Apel, 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at home with his wife, Mary, and family by his side. He was born on Feb. 27, 1929, on the family farm north of Ellinwood, to Mathias &amp; Barbara (Heyne) Apel.

He graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1947, and Married F. Marilyn Eves on Nov. 28, 1950. He and Marilyn had five children and divorced in 1978. Norman worked on the family farm and in the oilfield including, Globe Oil Well Cementing and Allied Cementing, out of Great Bend. He then married Gladys Price on Aug. 9, 1980, and she passed in March 2015.

Norman was an active volunteer member of the Assembly of God (now Encounter) Church for many years, driving the Sunday school bus and many other activities. He continued farming while working for Harv’s furniture, Mid Continent LP Service, and was a part time driver for Marmie Motors.

He later married Mary Arlene Bieberle on June 25, 2017. They enjoyed traveling, church activities, watching Westerns and old cartoons, and spending time together.

Survivors include, his wife Mary of the home; his children, Briana Ernst (Larry) of Great Bend, Gerilyn Hoard of Salina, Amy Astrab (Robert) of Hollister, Mo., and David Apel of Salina, Michael Price (Loretta) of Wichita, Bobby Price (Ina) of Cushing, Okla., Eddie Price (Karen) and Terry Price (Shelly) all of Great Bend, and Sherry Cox (Shawn) of Derby; one sister, Mary Jean Miller (Dick) of Great Bend; 27 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his second wife, Gladys; one son, Gary Duane Apel; son in law, Mark Hoard; a brother, Harry Apel; two sisters, Sally Sigley and Theresa Wornkey; a granddaughter, Tamara (Apel) Green; a grandson, Jason Hoard; and two great grandsons, Chance Streit and Carlin Hill, Jr.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m., Sunday, March 26, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, March 27, 2023, at Encounter Church in Great Bend, with Pastor Dwight Dozer presiding. Norman Apel, age 94

With great sorrow, the Boots and Lewis families announce the unexpected passing of our loving and caring mother and grandmother, Margaret (Darlene) Knox. Her soul peacefully ascended into heaven on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, in Hutchinson.

Darlene was born in February of 1944 to Harry and Christobelle (Henning) Huck in Wichita, and moved with her parents soon thereafter to Zook and Larned. She was a previous member of the Larned United Methodist Church. Darlene graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in piano performance. Darlene resided ‘on the hill’ in Larned for the majority of her life until recently relocating to be closer to family in Hesston and then on to Hutchinson.

Darlene’s youthful years were full of energy and passion for her love of dance and playing the piano. She often danced as a child and into her young adult years, performing in recitals and special events. She choreographed performances for the Sweet Adelines of Wichita, and even had the opportunity to perform on television in 1959. Her love of the arts was further fulfilled by providing private piano and group dance lessons to young children for many years in Larned. Darlene went on to study nursing while working full-time and obtained her RN degree from Barton County Community College in Great Bend in 1978. She worked as a nurse for Dr. Durwin K. Smith Chiropractic and then at Larned State Hospital as a charge nurse for 16 years until retiring early in 2002 to spend more time with her grandchildren.

Darlene’s family meant the world to her. She never hesitated to tell anyone who would listen just how proud she was of the accomplishments of both her daughters, their husbands, and her grandchildren. Darlene was a generous mom and mamaw who took joy in hearing about family updates and reliving memories until her physical body tired and succumbed too early.

Darlene was the only daughter born to Harry and Christobelle Huck, who both preceded her in death. Darlene is survived by her daughter, Denise Boots and son-in-law Henry Boots, Jr.; daughter, Dana Knox Lewis and son-in-law Pat Lewis; grandchildren Ashleigh Boots, Austin Boots, Peyton Lewis, and Gunnar Lewis.

James Dwight Noble, 79, passed away March 20, 2023, at his home, Larned.

He was born Sept. 29, 1943, in Wellington; the son of James and Dorothy Bruce Noble. A longtime area resident, he was a mechanic for John Deere Implement and USD 495 Bus Barn. He retired from the Army National Guard as a Staff Sergeant after 20 years of service.

Dwight was a master of many trades, Lock Smith, Plumber and Carpenter, he was a Mason and a Shriner.

Survivors include; his common-law spouse, LaVerna (Schaffer) Ochs, Larned; three daughters, Dana Noble, Larned, Danette Noble, Salina and Dawnita Noble, Wesley Chapel, Fla.; two sisters, Carolyn Prather, Peoria, Ill., and Judy Lauterbach, Ore.; six grandchildren, Trenton Barrett, Kelton Barrett, Mickiah Whaley, Shaughn Noble, Abbygayle Noble and Tiffany Bair; two great-grandchildren, Johnathon King Barrett and Rocky Noble; a nephew Chance (Michelle) Noble, Larned, and numerous other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by; two brothers, his twin brother, Dwayne Noble and Merel Lauterbach.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be 20 p.m. Friday, March 24 at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 23 at the mortuary.
