Several members of the mobile crisis response (MCR) team at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation recently attended a meeting that attracted many of their peers to Great Bend from throughout Kansas.

Laura Patzner, crisis case manager, said it was gratifying to learn from these other professionals that the local team is off to a good start.

“While we provide this service on a limited basis so far, we hope it will be available 24/7 within a year or less,” Patzner said. “The service has been up and running for a while now but we need to add to our staff.

“We are actively recruiting therapists who can be part of this mobile team,” she continued. “This is so important because sometimes those who are struggling with behavioral-health concerns cannot come to us because of a lack of transportation or other issues.”

Patzner emphasized that The Center, 5815 Broadway, collaborates with many local and area entities on this and other services.

“One thing is always clear: mobile crisis response is a collaborative process,” she commented. “We are so fortunate to have many valuable community partners in our four-county service area.”

These partners include law-enforcement officers, Juvenile Services and many medical facilities.

“We need a buy-in from all these entities and we have it,” Patzner said. “We couldn’t ask for better support.”

Patzner was one of six staff members at The Center to attend the May 14 meeting, which was organized by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS). Participants included crisis-team therapists and case managers, along with a representative of The Center’s Substance Use Disorder department.

“The main purpose was to bring crisis teams together to provide an overall view of MCR across Kansas,” Patzner noted. “We learned from long-established programs in rural and urban areas.

“They have worked the kinks out and we can learn from their experiences. It was great to see that mobile crisis response is one thing everyone can get behind. Everybody is willing to support this process because they all realize its importance.”

When the formation of the local MCR team was announced last fall, Tracie Haselhorst, The Center’s clinical director, noted that “the crises people face entail concerns that are new or escalating. There could also be the threat of suicide.

“They might have been able to cope yesterday but need help today. The main goal is to prevent a trip to the emergency room and/or jail.”

The recent day-long meeting was held at the Great Bend Events Center where topics included: the “why” of MCR and its importance; a primer on crisis continuum of care in Kansas; and roll-out and delivery of MCR. Panel discussions also were on the agenda.

Fridays on Forest returns May 30 with the Bat Cats

At last week’s Great Bend City Council meeting, City Administrator Logan
Burns presented an abatement that was approved by the council. The abatement to
be cleaned up at 2015 Baker Avenue had furniture and mattresses on the west
side of the property.


After seeing the abatement, council member Gary Parr suggested to city
officials to view the issues at 811 Madison.


"It's a landfill," said Parr. "I'm looking at this from a public safety standpoint. There's no telling the rodents and whatever is living in there because it's massive. I have no vendetta against the owner, but you can't do that, I can't do that. There isn't anybody sitting here that can do what's going on over there without somebody saying something about it."

Burns said the Property Maintenance department has previously looked at the 811
Madison lot and were successful in getting rid of a vehicle and tires. He also
noted some of the concerns are difficult to take action on because the city is
allowed to take pictures of private property only from the sidewalk or easement. 


When asked about flying a drone over the property to snap pictures, City
Attorney Allen Glendenning advised against the suggestion.


"If you're flying a drone into somebody's yard at eye level, that definitely would be wrong," said Glendenning. "How high up you go for that, I don't know if there is any legal definition of exactly where you would have to be. It would probably be an unreasonable search."

Burns added that city crews will continue to monitor the status at 811 Madison.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend councilmember voices concern about house on Madison

In late March, the Barton County Commission approved moving their
asphalt preparation to Venture Corporation. A month later, the commission
visited Venture’s asphalt plant to get a look at the more cost-effective method
of generating the county’s cold mix. 

At Tuesday’s meeting, County Works
Director Chris Schartz said the process has gone great so far.


"Our crew drives in there, gets loaded and goes on the scale," said Schartz. "At the end of the day, they have printed load tickets for us so we know how much we have loaded and not loaded. It's gone well. They're doing a great job and our guys are doing a great job."

In the past, Venture would have to break down their plant in order to bring the
cold mix to the county’s pit. Venture now mixes the asphalt and keeps the
material at their plant. The agreement entails Barton County receives 25,000
tons of asphalt from Venture at a cost of $32 per ton.


As of Tuesday, Schartz said the county has already hauled in 3,345 tons of
asphalt mix for a four-mile stretch of road surfacing south of Albert. Crews
are currently working south of Heizer.


Last year, Barton County started their overlay project June 13.
Schartz said with the new agreement with Venture, the county was able to begin
May 1 this year.


"Doing it earlier, only helps in our sealing process," said Schartz. "We can seal sooner when it's warmer out, as opposed to it starting to get cooler. The hotter it is, the more that aggregate goes into the oil, which only helps the sealing process. It's definitely an advantage to start earlier."

A quarter of the county’s paved roads are overlaid each year. The southwest
quadrant is the focus for repairs in 2025.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Wednesday's weather

June is the time to fertilize warm-season lawn grasses such as bermudagrass, buffalograss, and zoysiagrass. These species all thrive in warmer summer weather, so this is the time they respond best to fertilization. The most important nutrient is nitrogen (N), and these three species need it in varying amounts.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Bermudagrass requires the most nitrogen. Bermudagrass used on athletic fields needs about 4 lbs. nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. during the season.&nbsp; High-quality home lawns are often given 3 pounds per 1000 square feet and low maintenance areas can get by on 2 lbs.. Apply this as separate applications, about 4 weeks apart consisting of 1 lb. N per 1,000 sq. ft. starting in early May for athletic fields.&nbsp; It is already too late for the May application, but the June application is just around the corner. The nitrogen can come from either a quick- or slow-release source. So any lawn fertilizer will work. Plan the last application for no later than August 15. This helps ensure the bermudagrass is not overstimulated, making it susceptible to winter-kill.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Zoysiagrass grows more slowly than bermudagrass and is prone to develop thatch.&nbsp; Consequently, it does not need as much nitrogen. In fact, too much is worse than too little. One and one-half to 2 pounds N per 1,000 sq. ft. during the season is sufficient. Split the total in two and apply once in early June and again around mid-July. Slow-release nitrogen is preferable but quick-release is acceptable. Slow-release nitrogen is sometimes listed as "slowly available" or "water insoluble."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Buffalograss requires the least nitrogen of all lawn species commonly grown in Kansas. It will survive and persist with no supplemental nitrogen, but giving it one lb. N per 1,000 sq. ft. will improve color and density. This application should be made in early June. For a little darker color, fertilize it as described for zoysiagrass in the previous paragraph, but do not apply more than a total of 2 lb. N per 1,000 sq. ft. in one season.&nbsp; As with zoysia, slow-release nitrogen is preferable, but fast-release is also OK. As for all turfgrasses, phosphorus and potassium are best applied according to soil test results because many soils already have adequate amounts of these nutrients for turfgrass growth. If you need to apply phosphorus or potassium, it is best to core aerate beforehand to ensure the nutrients reach the roots.&nbsp;

 </figure>June is the time to fertilize warm-season lawn grasses such as bermudagrass, buffalograss, and zoysiagrass. These species all thrive in warmer summer weather, so this is the time they respond best to fertilization. The most important nutrient is nitrogen (N), and these three species need it in varying amounts.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Bermudagrass requires the most nitrogen. Bermudagrass used on athletic fields needs about 4 lbs. nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. during the season.&nbsp; High-quality home lawns are often given 3 pounds per 1000 square feet and low maintenance areas can get by on 2 lbs.. Apply this as separate applications, about 4 weeks apart consisting of 1 lb. N per 1,000 sq. ft. starting in early May for athletic fields.&nbsp; It is already too late for the May application, but the June application is just around the corner. The nitrogen can come from either a quick- or slow-release source. So any lawn fertilizer will work. Plan the last application for no later than August 15. This helps ensure the bermudagrass is not overstimulated, making it susceptible to winter-kill.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Zoysiagrass grows more slowly than bermudagrass and is prone to develop thatch.&nbsp; Consequently, it does not need as much nitrogen. In fact, too much is worse than too little. One and one-half to 2 pounds N per 1,000 sq. ft. during the season is sufficient. Split the total in two and apply once in early June and again around mid-July. Slow-release nitrogen is preferable but quick-release is acceptable. Slow-release nitrogen is sometimes listed as "slowly available" or "water insoluble."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Buffalograss requires the least nitrogen of all lawn species commonly grown in Kansas. It will survive and persist with no supplemental nitrogen, but giving it one lb. N per 1,000 sq. ft. will improve color and density. This application should be made in early June. For a little darker color, fertilize it as described for zoysiagrass in the previous paragraph, but do not apply more than a total of 2 lb. N per 1,000 sq. ft. in one season.&nbsp; As with zoysia, slow-release nitrogen is preferable, but fast-release is also OK. As for all turfgrasses, phosphorus and potassium are best applied according to soil test results because many soils already have adequate amounts of these nutrients for turfgrass growth. BOOR: Fertilize warm-season grasses

TOPEKA —President Donald Trump&nbsp;has granted&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly’s&nbsp;request for a federal disaster declaration for the state due to damages caused by severe winter storm, straight-line winds, flooding, and wildfires during the period of March 14-19, 2025. Multiple counties sustained damage to utility infrastructure, roads, bridges, and some government-owned buildings, according to a media release from the governor's office.

“I am grateful that this request for federal assistance has been approved,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly&nbsp;said. “These federal funds will go a long way in supporting the restoration work by those in counties impacted by the storms.”

The declaration allows state and local levels of government, as well as certain private nonprofit organizations that provide vital and essential services, such as rural electric cooperatives, to apply for Public Assistance funds for emergency and permanent work for the repair or replacement of infrastructure damaged by the disaster.

Counties named in the declaration are Barton, Chautauqua, Edwards, Elk, Ellis, Gove, Graham, Gray, Greeley, Hodgeman, Jewell, Lincoln, Logan, Ness, Norton, Osborne, Pawnee, Phillips, Rice, Rooks, Rush, Russell, Sheridan, Sherman, Smith, Stafford, Wallace, and Woodson Counties.

Earlier this month, Barton County officials reminded the public of how
decorations should be handled on graves at any of the county cemeteries.
Decorations were allowed to be placed on graves seven days prior to Memorial
Day. 

Barton County Commission Chair Tricia Schlessiger on Tuesday reminded citizens it is
now time remember the second half the resolution, that all decorations must be removed seven days after the holiday.


"Barton County will not be responsible for the loss or damage to appropriate ornamental items left on the lot, grave or other parts of the Memorial Parks and Cemeteries during the listed holiday periods," said Schlessiger.

All grave decorations not in a vase may be displayed only seven days before and after the holiday. As Barton County will get back into mowing and regular cemetery maintenance,
employees will not attempt to find items after being removed.&nbsp;

Barton County maintains the Golden Belt Cemetery and the Hillcrest cemeteries,
north of Great Bend.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (5/23 - 5/26)

Picking the right paint has recently been a problem for the City of
Great Bend and other area communities. The Great Bend City Council approved a
quote from Venture Corporation last week to apply pavement markings to several
intersections in town. 

City Administrator Logan Burns said applying the street
markings is usually a task city crews can handle but after trying multiple
manufacturers, the street paint is not lasting.


"We went to 10th and Washington toward the latter end of last year," said Burns. "We went back and repainted that. We're having issues with paint. We've tried three or four manufacturers of paint. Whatever Road Safe has, seems to stick a little bit better. It seems like a week or two after we put that down, it was already gone."

Kadiyala said this approach will help the city save time and money by reducing
mobilization costs to paint eight intersections along 10th Street.


"The eight intersections on the list are what we are prioritizing since they are on the highway and it's essential for the safety and traffic flow," said Kadiyala. "Meanwhile, we are going to be looking into a viable solution in-house for other intersections. We just want people to know we are prioritizing these intersections, but we're not neglecting any other intersections on our list as well."

The price to mark the eight additional intersections is $59,312.19.

Great Bend and other area communities. The Great Bend City Council approved a
quote from Venture Corporation last week to apply pavement markings to several
intersections in town. City Administrator Logan Burns said applying the street
markings is usually a task city crews can handle but after trying multiple
manufacturers, the street paint is not lasting.
"We went to 10th and Washington toward the latter end of last year," said Burns. "We went back and repainted that. We're having issues with paint. We've tried three or four manufacturers of paint. Whatever Road Safe has, seems to stick a little bit better. Barton Co. IGNITE Business Competition deadline is July 1

A big addition to Heizer Park is wrapping up and more improvements are
right around the corner for the Great Bend park. Musco installed the mini-pitch
double soccer system earlier this month. Merritt Tennis &amp; Track Systems
placed an acrylic surface on the court last week.

"Out over the weekend, there were a lot of kids out there," said Burns. "Dirt work will start for the bathroom install on June 4. Irrigation will start on June 9. This project is starting to come together for that."

Great Bend was awarded grant funds from the Land &amp; Water Conservation Fund
through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) in the amount of
$161,260 with matching funds from the city for a total of $361,260.


The Heizer Park improvements also include a restroom facility, upgrades to the
sand volleyball and basketball court and a soccer field with new netting.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
