United Way of Central Kansas (UWCK) is launching a new initiative designed to support families during some of life’s most unexpected and overwhelming moments. In partnership with local hospitals, the Companion Support Bags program will provide comfort and practical care to families whose loved ones are transferred out of local hospitals during medical emergencies.

UWCK extends sincere appreciation to Clara Barton Medical Center for bringing this idea forward and partnering to expand it across Central Kansas.

When a loved one is suddenly transferred to an out-of-town hospital, families often leave in a hurry — with no time to pack, plan, or even think clearly. Many walk into one of the most difficult moments of their lives with nothing but the clothes they’re wearing. Through conversations in our community, we’ve learned just how many people across our area have experienced this exact situation. It can happen to anyone.

These moments are especially challenging for ALICE families — those who are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed. In Barton and Pawnee Counties, 45% of households are ALICE or below, meaning unexpected crises can quickly create financial and emotional strain.

Companion Support Bags will be distributed directly by hospital staff and will include essential items such as snacks, hygiene supplies, a phone charger, and materials to help families organize important medical information. There are no income guidelines or eligibility requirements — any family in need will receive a bag.

Approximately 500 bags will be distributed each year across Barton and Pawnee Counties. The program is already more than halfway funded for its first year, and UWCK is seeking additional community partners to help bring this effort to full implementation.

“These bags are a way for our community to be there for people during incredibly hard moments,” said Charell Owings, United Way of Central Kansas. “They provide comfort, meet basic needs, and most importantly, let families know they are not alone.”

Sponsorship opportunities range from $250 to $1,000 and may be made through monetary donations to help purchase supplies. Community members and organizations may also contact UWCK to learn which items are still needed to help fill the Companion Support Bags. Organizations and individuals interested in supporting the initiative are encouraged to reach out to United Way of Central Kansas to learn more about how to be part of this meaningful effort.
