Like many 4-H and FFA students, Rose Latta from Marysville explored different projects from sewing to photography, but it was at 4-H Discovery Days that she discovered her true passion. During a hands-on milling class, she milled a small sample of wheat and then used the flour to bake cookies — the first time she saw the entire process from kernel to finished product.&nbsp;

“I was fascinated by how milling works and how it connects to the food we consume every day,” Latta wrote in her scholarship essay. “At that moment, I realized the impact milling has on the world, and I fell in love with the process.”

Latta’s interest in flour milling and her conviction to make a tangible difference in the global food system made her the perfect recipient for the David Radenberg Memorial Scholarship, which awards one $1,000 scholarship to a current undergraduate or graduate student from Kansas who is pursuing a career in the field of agriculture.&nbsp;

The scholarship, administered by Kansas Wheat, honors the legacy of David Radenberg, a lifelong wheat farmer from Claflin and an industry leader. He represented central Kansas on the Kansas Wheat Commission from April 2011 to March 2020, including serving as chairman from August 2018 to May 2019. Radenberg was also a founding board member of the Kansas Wheat Commission Research Foundation.

In 2013, Radenberg also visited multiple Pacific Rim countries to promote U.S. wheat. The contrast between third-world poverty he saw in thriving modern cities left an impression on him and reinforced his support of wheat research to help feed a hungry world.

“David Radenberg saw clearly the connection between Kansas wheat farmers and their global consumers,” said Kansas Wheat CEO Justin Gilpin. “This year’s scholarship recipient echoes that passionate belief in how agriculture helps make the world a better place.”&nbsp;

Latta, who graduated from Marysville Junior/Senior High School in 2024, is currently pursuing a major in milling science and management at Kansas State University, complemented by minors in personal financial planning and leadership. She also works as a student employee at the Hal Ross Flour Mill, where she assists with basic maintenance tasks and mill operations. She leads mill tours, providing visitors, domestic and international, with informative and engaging explanations of the milling process.&nbsp;

Latta is an active member of the K-State Milling Science Club, Quest freshman honorary, K-State women’s wrestling club and the Sunflower 4-H Club in Marshall County, demonstrating her well-rounded dedication to her studies and community.

Latta plans to continue expanding her knowledge of milling science, refining her hands-on skills in the mill and finding new ways to contribute to the milling industry’s success.&nbsp;

She is committed to the global food system and making a lasting impact through milling.&nbsp;

The drought monitor report as of Tuesday, May 20th shows a little progress with Severe drought at less than 2% and we are up to 19% totally out of dry conditions (mostly Southeast Kansas into the Northeast. Our entire area is still in moderate drought. This doesn’t include any precipitation after Monday. The six-to ten-day outlook (May 27 to 31) indicates a 40 to 60% chance of below normal temperatures and near normal for precipitation. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (May 29 to June 4) indicates normal to a 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal for temperatures and normal for precipitation. The temperatures are beneficial for the maturing wheat crop. However, we need rain as the recent precipitation was spotty. We need rain for our summer row crops and pasture/forages.

It makes news when there is a foodborne illness outbreak or an exotic disease/ pest is a threat to our food supply/environment. It’s news because over decades through the FDA, USDA, and other federal agencies, we have developed and put in place methods to ensure as safe a food supply as possible, and keep out possible problems in not only agriculture but also the environment or contain/eliminate them if they happen. As the Congress and White House debate efficiencies and cuts, the public needs to understand these agencies and what they do. Last week we discussed the NRCS. This week, what the Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) does and why it matters.

APHIS was established in 1972 during the Nixon Administration. Its origins date back to 1854 with the establishment of an entomology office and over the next century it evolved and added new responsibilities. Its mission is to “protect the health and value of American agriculture and natural resources.” One of its main missions is to protect agriculture from invasive pests and diseases so it is to closely monitor anything coming across our borders, especially foodstuffs. It houses the Chief Veterinary Officer of the U.S. APHIS serves as the point in addressing plant and animal pest/disease emergencies.

Some of the programs involve keeping out invasive species; addressing animal welfare; working on diseases that can jump from animals to humans (see the avian flu); monitoring noncompliant biotechnology; addressing animal and plant health threats within our borders; and potential agricultural bioterrorism; and more. Now for a few examples:

· Honeybee loss is a critical threat to much plant base agriculture. APHIS is involved.

· Quarantining animals to stop diseases with the screwworm problem with Mexican screwworm as recent case. Or working to contain the spread of avian flu.

· APHIS regulates biotechnology to ensure the safety of GMOs and that they don’t negatively affect the environment.

· APHIS plays a major role in inspecting products coming into the country. We live in an international economy with items entering the country from all over the world. This raises the possibility of exotic pests/diseases entering the country, and not just on our imported foodstuffs. These are a particular problem as they often lack natural controls and native plants and animals often lacking resistance or tolerance.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.

The water recreation season in Kansas officially runs from April 1 to Oct. 31, as do the harmful algae blooms (HAB) response program's active operations. Kansans should remain vigilant while engaging in activities taking place in or on the water, such as swimming, boating, and fishing.

A HAB may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g., direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache.

Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

School is out for the summer!&nbsp; Now is the time to get your child registered for a summer of fun with the Rec so please get enrolled early. These amazing programs are set to begin the first of June and run through July.&nbsp; Summer activities will be offered at the Recreation Center, Activity Center, Lincoln, Jefferson, Eisenhower and Park Schools, Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo, Kansas Wetlands Education Center (KWEC), and other locations throughout Great Bend.&nbsp;

A variety of enrichment and recreation programs are available for children between Kindergarten and Sophomores grades. &nbsp;These programs include Sketching, Painting, Ceramics, Art &amp; Craft Studio classes, Swim lessons, special one-time classes, 4th&nbsp;of July Crafts, Bread Dough Art, Girly Bling classes, Tye Dye, Guitar lessons, Father’s Day classes, Cooking, Golf, Tennis, Roller Skating, STEM classes, Puppets, Creating A Commercial, just to name a few.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kelly’s Garden Sense welcomed community members to the greenhouse for a Great Bend Chamber ribbon cutting ceremony on May 8. The morning celebrated the addition of a new greenhouse named Franie—a cool, shaded haven dedicated to their perennial collection and the latest expansion.

What started as a dream to blend creativity and landscaping has grown into a destination offering everything from tropicals, succulents, and seasonal pottery to full-scale landscaping that can include outdoor lighting, and 3D project renderings.&nbsp;

Guests at the ribbon cutting had the chance to stroll through the new Franie greenhouse, enjoy light refreshments, and chat with Kelly’s crew about upcoming plans—including the addition of a fall pumpkin patch. Kelly’s Garden Sense is located just east of the city limits at 134 NE 10 Ave. Greenhouse hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Volunteers in Action (sponsored by Barton Community College), and the Great Bend Economic Development invite the community to become part of an exciting journey as a volunteer for the next phase of revitalizing downtown Great Bend by helping with the first-ever Big Bend Bash.

“The Big Bend Bash will be not only a gathering of friends, food, and festivities but also the exciting kickoff of a lively, community-driven initiative to transform downtown with a streetscape enhancement plan,” said GBED President Sara Arnberger.

“As a volunteer, you can help make this day packed with excitement, entertainment, and community spirit,” said Volunteers in Action Director Linn Hogg. Volunteer opportunities include:

Every dollar spent at the Big Bend Bash will directly fund Phase 1 of an ambitious streetscape redesign, aimed at creating a vibrant, walkable, and beautiful downtown. “It's been quite a while since Great Bend’s last major renovation back in 1996, and GBED is eager to update the space to reflect the identity and dreams held for the future,” Arnberger said.

“Downtown is the heart of Great Bend, showcasing its story to every visitor. We want our story to shine: a community that believes in progress, rich with pride and optimism for what's ahead,” she said. “Imagine enhanced sidewalks, upgraded lighting, lush green spaces, and thoughtful design elements that will transform how we live, work, and connect in our downtown.”

Arnberger’s goal is for the Big Bend Bash to become an annual celebration, empowering the community to build momentum each year, a vision shared by Volunteers in Action, Hogg said. “Volunteers will be vital to making a meaningful difference and being part of an exciting transformation.”

Volunteers needed for Big Bend Bash in Great Bend

Delivering property tax relief and reform for Kansan homeowners was atop every Kansas legislator’s list as if Moses himself was delivering them on stone tablets from Mount Sinai.&nbsp;

An expanded Republican supermajority riding high off November’s victory party rhetoric blustered that property taxes were job #1, #2, and #3.&nbsp;Senate President Ty Masterson&nbsp;chiseled it to the very top of his GOP tablets daring Governor Kelly’s compliance. And when three property tax bills passed out of committee within the first weeks of the session, it appeared the mountain was moving to Moses just as promised.

Three months later, Moses came back down with broken tablets and a t-shirt, “I went to the mountain top and all I got were these crummy 1.5 mills.”&nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Lawmakers grossly oversold their agency.&nbsp;It shouldn’t be a big secret by now that the State can only be so transformative with property taxes. They controlled a miniscule one percent (1.5 mills) portion of your property tax bill for state and university building maintenance. In the end, it was the only unilateral thing they could play with and eliminated it to their credit. The fact it only saves $35 on a $200,000 house is a kick in the shins to vulnerable homeowners. Other bills like&nbsp;HB 2011&nbsp;and the Dems&nbsp;SB 217&nbsp;targeted the other portion of your bill under State auspices - 20 mills for local schools – but the juice was not worth the squeeze.&nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Dueling chambers&nbsp;– For some reason, the Senate revived the same 3% cap on property value increases the House rejected last year. House leaders rejected it again calling the constitutional amendment&nbsp;gimmicky&nbsp;given it doesn’t force cities to cut any property tax. Instead, the House deftly proposed an innovative $60 million fund to incentivize local governments to lower property taxes (HB 2396/ASTRA fund). One stick. One carrot. One philosophical logjam.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The well is running dry&nbsp;– As time wore on, enough lawmakers realized they were either not willing, or unable, to cash checks they’d have to write for property tax relief. This session came on the heels of a massive signature $1.3 billion tax cut in 2024 including twice as much property tax relief. Don’t forget, for every dollar of property tax relief they had to backfill with an equal dollar of income/sales tax revenue so schools and public building maintenance didn’t’ suffer. With the specter of&nbsp;state coffers going red by 2028, the well is drying up like an Ogallala aquifer.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The flat tax “okey doke”.&nbsp;With everyone spellbound on property taxes, Republican leaders pulled a classic&nbsp;“okey doke” ball fake&nbsp;very late in the session by slipping past a Kelly veto block to deliver a phased-in 4% flat income tax. Talk about deep fakes. Kelly proclaimed it the “kiss of death for the Kansas budget” as it sucked the well even drier for property tax relief and unmasked conservatives true colors putting income tax cuts first.

In the end, there was no Promise Land. But maybe that’s the lesson. The State will not part the Red Sea meddling with mill rates. Not now. The real issue, and their real power, lies in property assessment reform which they control through Kansas statutes and the county appraisal system. That’s a talk they could walk.

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Pawnee County Health Department are reporting a positive case of measles in a Pawnee County resident, according to a media release from the KDHE.

It is unknown if this case is associated with the ongoing outbreak of measles in Southwest Kansas.  KDHE, along with the Pawnee County Health Department, are actively notifying persons potentially exposed to this case of measles.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus. It spreads easily when an infected person talks, sneezes or coughs. 

People who are not vaccinated or lack immunity are especially at risk of becoming infected. Symptoms of measles typically begin with a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Three to five days after symptoms begin, a skin rash develops and usually starts on the face and spreads down to the neck, trunk, arms and legs. 

If you have been exposed to measles you should take the following steps:Understand if you are susceptible to infection. Check if you’ve received a measles-containing vaccine, like the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, have medical documentation of past measles infection, or have laboratory evidence of immunity. People who are not vaccinated and have not previously had measles are especially vulnerable to becoming infected. 

 Monitor yourself for 21 days after your exposure. Look out for any symptoms—especially a fever and a new or unexplained skin rash—and contact your healthcare provider or local health department if symptoms develop. Avoid high-risk settings. If you are not immune, consider staying home to prevent the spread of measles. If you cannot remain home, stay away from large gatherings and people that might be susceptible to measles, including those who are unvaccinated, pregnant women, infants, or people who are immunocompromised. 

If you need medical care, call your provider ahead of time and let them know you may have been exposed to measles so they can take any necessary steps to protect others from potential measles exposure.  Talk to a healthcare provider. If you have any questions about your health or your immunity status, contact your healthcare provider. If you are not immune to measles, a healthcare provider can determine whether you need treatment to help prevent or lessen the severity of infection.  The best way to prevent measles is to get the MMR vaccine.

 If you have had measles or have been vaccinated, your risk of contracting the disease is very low. However, a few people (about three out of 100) can still get measles even after two MMR vaccine doses if they are near someone who is sick.

Wheatland Electric Cooperative, Inc. is inviting the local community to their Power Play – an evening of food, fun and festivities – with the Great Bend Bat Cats at Al Burns Memorial Field on June 10.

Wheatland will be grilling free hamburgers and hot dogs for the first 200 attendees, first-come first-served, beginning at 6 p.m. Dollar beer will also be available.

Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and admission is free. Help Wheatland cheer on this semi-professional team and fill the stands with local fans. The Bat Cats will be playing host to the non-league Junction City Brigade during this home game.

The Bat Cats are playing this summer as part of the Jayhawk Collegiate League, a not for profit 501(c)3 summer collegiate baseball league formed in 1976. The league is made up of 7 independently owned teams in south central Kansas playing in Derby, Great Bend, Haysville, Hutchinson, Augusta, Kingman, and Newton. In honor of Memorial Day, Summit Roofing announced it will gift two new roofs to local veterans, Sonny Mead and Joe Viegra, both of Larned. After providing care in Larned for 17 years, Dr. David Sanger moved to Hutchinson to help care for his mother during her battle with lung cancer. Now his passion for rural health care brings him back to Ellinwood Hospital and Clinic where he’s currently seeing patients.

“I was not doing direct patient care while I was in Hutchinson, so I was really wanting to get back into that,” he said. “The hospital heard through a nurse practitioner here that I was looking to get back to hands-on patient care and reached out to me.”

Sanger was born and raised in Wichita. He attended Wichita State University for his undergraduate studies before attending The University of Kansas School of Medicine. His residency was done at Via Christi St. Joseph.

“I just loved taking care of the people in Larned,” he said. “All of my children were born and raised in rural Kansas, so I wanted to get back here and start taking care of these folks again.”

Sanger has been married for 30 years. Together, he and his wife adopted five children who now range in age from 18-26.

“They’re getting older now and moving out of the house but my oldest lives in Larned. My daughter works at the hospital in Hutchinson and a middle son and his wife live in Kansas City. I have another son working on his associate’s degree and our youngest just graduated from high school.”

“He loves to go cycling with me and hanging out so that’s been wonderful,” he said. “I didn’t know how great it was to have a grandkid. If I had known, I would’ve had them first!”

Sanger enjoys taking care of patients throughout the spectrum from birth to death and also has a passion for caring for athletes.

“I spent a lot of time on the sidelines,” he said. “We are going to be working to improve concussion care for athletes here locally in our community.”

Sanger said he is excited to be back to taking care of patients on a daily basis.

“I really like to partner with a patient,” he said. “I don’t like to tell them what needs to be done. I like to give them recommendations and work with them on their level of comfort to put together a plan for taking care of their health.”

Dr. Sanger is accepting new patients in the Ellinwood Clinic. He is in the office Monday and Tuesday and will be seeing patients remotely through a hybrid telehealth from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday through a new walk-in clinic that opens June 1. Patients must come to the clinic but no appointment is necessary.

Dr. Sanger returns to rural KS at Ellinwood Hospital and Clinic

PAWNEE COUNTY– Rhonda Hudson-McNutt, 47, appeared in the Pawnee County District Court in custody Thursday afternoon for sentencing on two separate felony cases, according to Pawnee&nbsp; County Attorney Doug McNett.

In July of 2024, Hudson-McNutt was arrested on probable cause without incident following an investigation by the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Department. 

She was charged with Blackmail, Breach of Privacy, to wit: disseminating nude images, Identity Theft,&nbsp; Interference with Law Enforcement, to wit: falsely reporting a felony crime,&nbsp; Interference with Law Enforcement, to wit: falsely reporting information in a felony investigation, and Criminal False Communication. She was also charged in a separate criminal complaint with misdemeanor Trespass.

Hudson-McNutt subsequently posted bond and was released. However, on August 9, 2024, the defendant was arrested for violating the no contact conditions of her bond. Incident to that arrest, she was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine.

On November 19, 2024, she entered no contest pleas in the first case to&nbsp; Breach of Privacy, to wit: disseminating nude images, Identity Theft, and&nbsp; Interference with Law Enforcement, to wit: falsely reporting a felony crime. She also entered a no contest plea to Possession of Methamphetamine. In exchange for the pleas, the State dismissed the remaining charges. Following the plea hearing, the defendant was released on bond but was re-arrested the following day for violating the no contact condition.

In support of the plea, Pawnee County Attorney Douglas McNett advised the Court that in July of 2024 Hudson-McNutt threatened an individual that she would contact law enforcement to falsely claim he sexually assaulted her if that individual didn’t disclose the whereabouts of her estranged husband. The investigation revealed that she also distributed, without permission, nude images of the individual that she’d gained access to. During this same timeframe, Hudson-McNutt accessed her estranged husband’s email account and sent an email to the Kansas Department of Children and Families claiming to confess to child sex crimes.

Following an extended sentencing hearing which included testimony from the victims, District Judge Bruce Gatterman denied her request for probation citing her behavior on bond and sentenced Hudson-McNutt to an aggregated sentence of 47 months in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections.

The energy was high in downtown Great Bend on Friday, April 25, as the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce held a celebratory Ribbon Cutting to commemorate the 5-Year Anniversary of Great Bend Alive, the downtown arm of Great Bend Economic Development. The event also marked the official launch of the 2025 Fridays on Forest season, a beloved community series bringing food, fun, music, and fellowship to Forest Avenue on the last Friday of each month, April through October.

Despite brisk temperatures, the community showed up in force, with more than 430 attendees bundling up to enjoy the kickoff event. Guests were treated to a vibrant evening filled with local food vendors, drinks, and live music, all in a family-friendly atmosphere. The April event was made possible by event sponsor SOFTwarfare, and the Chamber’s Ribbon Cutting added a festive moment to celebrate the ongoing revitalization of downtown Great Bend.

Fridays on Forest has grown into a signature downtown tradition, thanks to the support of local businesses, volunteers, and residents. The event series will continue throughout the summer and fall with extended hours from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, featuring rotating food and drink vendors, live entertainment, and themed nights.

The next event, Bat Cats Night, is scheduled for Friday, May 30th and will feature appearances by the Great Bend Bat Cats baseball team, live music from Artifact, and crowd-favorite vendors including Freaking Delicious Cheesecake Co., Lana’s Catering and Goodies, Lumpy’s, Dry Lake Brewing, and more.

In addition to community celebrations, Great Bend Alive is proud to announce its 2025 accreditation from Main Street America, a recognition of excellence in revitalizing and preserving the heart of the city.
