The Barton County Health Department is offering free Tetanus shots&nbsp; (Tdap vaccines) in Ellinwood Thursday, July 7 for anyone cleaning up from the storm that occurred Wednesday evening.

The health department's camper will be on Main Street (west side of the city office) until 7 p.m.

Winners were announced for the local showing of the Pitch, Hit &amp; Run
event hosted by the Major League Baseball. The competition provides boys and
girls an opportunity to showcase their baseball and softball skills.&nbsp;

The event was held at the Great Bend Sports Complex on July 5.

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (7/6)

Dr. Bryan Pinkall has seen much of the world after graduating from Great Bend High School in 2003. From the Grammys to the Olympics, Pinkall continues to build upon an impressive resume. He was recently named director of Kansas State University's School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

"I've had the blessing to be able to do a lot of interesting things in my life," he said. "This really wasn't on my radar until April. I feel a lot of honor given to me by my colleagues here, and the students here. I didn't really realize what that fully meant until the last few weeks. It's been special."

As director, Pinkall will be in charge of a school with approximately 500 majors and 60 full-time faculty members. The department also features one of the nation's largest marching bands, and Pinkall estimates some 4,000 students are involved in programming each year.

At 37 years old, Pinkall will be an anomaly of sorts in his new role, but he's spent much of his career in the same position.

"I've often felt that I was among the youngest in a lot of steps along the way," he said. "Sometimes that provides some difficulties. I've prided myself on my work ethic, and I think once people are able to see me and see how I work, that solves a lot of problems."

Upon graduating from Great Bend High School, Pinkall received a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Missouri, Kansas City where he was a Kauffman Scholar. He later earned a Master of Music and Bachelor of Arts from Kansas State University.

In 2014, the Topeka Capital Journal named Pinkall the Distinguished Kansan of the Year in Performing Arts. He was a national quarterfinalist for the Grammy Music Educator Award in 2018, and won the American Prize in Vocal Performance in 2020.

Pinkall earned his Carnegie Hall debut in 2014 as a member of the National Festival Chorus, and he was a featured soloist at the grand opening of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in 2011. That event included opera singer Placido Domingo and famed violinist Itzhak Perlman.

As a soloist and chorister with the Kansas City Chorale, Pinkall has been part of nine Grammy nominations and seven Grammy wins. Even seated towards the back, Pinkall was able to see many of the country's top stars in their natural setting.

"All the fun experiences are at the after parties," he said. "That's when you really see everyone in their element just as normal people. We're used to seeing folks on TV and their personality, but when they're behind the scenes they're just normal people. That's kind of fun."

Pinkall has also worked in the television scene as a manager of performance operations at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Opening Ceremonies in Sochi were nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards, winning one Emmy.

"You have to work with choreographers and dancers, all sorts of people," Pinkall said of his role. "It was my job to organize a lot of that. The ceremonies were divided into segments, so there were a number of people like myself and we were assigned to different parts of the show."

Pinkall spent between a month and two months on site for each Olympics, but said the viewing experience is better suited for those at home.

"It is stressful," he laughed. "It is very stressful. Since it's live and it's huge, there are always issues that come about. In reality, it's a lot better to watch it on TV than to be there in person because it's really designed to be a television event. You lose a lot of details if you're in the audience in the stadium. It's just a really interesting experience."

Pinkall's achievements go on. He helped provide free or discounted music education to more than 1,000 underprivileged children in the Kansas City area as Founder and Education Director of the Kansas City Vocal Institute. He's performed poetry and musical numbers at many of the nation's top venues, including Lincoln Hall and the Kennedy Center. Despite all that, he's most proud of being a teacher.

"I'm a people person and I love to teach," he said. "My family is entirely filled with educators. That one-to-one, you get to see into other peoples' lives and get a chance to be a part of that."

Great Bend Chamber coffee hour (7/7)

This is the time of year that gardeners often have trouble with vegetables that are blooming but not setting fruit.&nbsp; There are several possible reasons for this. One condition that can affect several species is overfertilization. Too much nitrogen causes the plant to emphasize vegetative growth, often to the detriment of fruit production.&nbsp; Overfertilization can lead to a delay in flower production and a decrease in fruit set among the flowers produced.&nbsp; This is especially true of tomatoes.&nbsp; Overfertilized tomatoes will produce a large, apparently healthy plant with no flowers or with flowers that don't set fruit.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Another possible problem with tomatoes setting fruit is temperature. Tomatoes normally won't set if the night temperature is below 50 due to sparse pollen production.  </figure>This is the time of year that gardeners often have trouble with vegetables that are blooming but not setting fruit.&nbsp; There are several possible reasons for this. One condition that can affect several species is overfertilization. Too much nitrogen causes the plant to emphasize vegetative growth, often to the detriment of fruit production.&nbsp; Overfertilization can lead to a delay in flower production and a decrease in fruit set among the flowers produced.&nbsp; This is especially true of tomatoes.&nbsp; Overfertilized tomatoes will produce a large, apparently healthy plant with no flowers or with flowers that don't set fruit.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Another possible problem with tomatoes setting fruit is temperature. Tomatoes normally won't set if the night temperature is below 50 due to sparse pollen production. The August contract for light sweet crude on the Nymex posted big gains on Friday, up nearly three dollars a barrel to settle at $108.43 per barrel. But by Tuesday the bottom fell out. Crude futures prices on Tuesday were down eight percent in New York and nine percent in London.&nbsp; New York prices fell to eight-week lows, dipping below $100 per barrel for the first time since May 11. In lunchtime trading the benchmark Nymex contract was down nearly nine dollars to $99.67 per barrel. London Brent was down more than ten dollars to $103.15 per barrel. The auto club AAA says fewer Americans fueled up over the last two weeks and that has helped drop pump prices by eight cents in the last seven days. The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline Tuesday was $4.80. Motorists in Kansas were paying $4.55, about four cents less than last week. The United States Supreme Court dealt a blow to the Administration's climate-change agenda. The court said the Administration does not have the legal authority to force power plants to shift away from fossil fuels to cleaner sources. The high court says it is up to Congress to give the EPA that authority. Kansas regulators posted 201 new intent-to-drill notices last month. That's 851 new notices so far this year compared to 540 through the first half of last year. There are three new intents in Barton County, three in Ellis County, two in Russell County, and one in Stafford County. The Rig Count in Kansas from Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service increased slightly, with 32 active drilling rigs in Western Kansas, up two rigs. The count east of Wichita was down one at 24. There are two new drilling permits in Russell County this week, out of 29 in western Kansas and 42 statewide. Midway through this year there are 801 permits for drilling at new locations, compared to 483 by the end of June last year. Operators completed 29 wells during the week through June 30th, all of them in Western Kansas. IOGSI reports 672 spuds in the Kansas oil patch at the midway point this year, and is currently scouting oilfield activity at 388 well sites across the state. The spud count is up 74% from last year. The weekly Rotary Rig County from Baker Hughes dropped slightly, with 750 active drilling rigs, with gas rigs dropping by four and oil rigs up one. The count in Texas was down two, although the count in the Eagle Ford play of South Texas was down four rigs. New Mexico was up one for the week. U.S. exports of crude oil and petroleum products reached a record of 9.8 million barrels per day during last month, based on a four-week rolling average through May 27th. The Energy Information Administration said exports of crude oil, finished motor gasoline, and distillate fuels have all increased since the beginning of 2022, partly due to increased demand from Europe, although they all remain below their record highs. Oil-by-rail traffic in the US is down just over three percent from year ago. The Association of American Railroads reports 9,884 tanker carloads for the week through June 25th, down four tankers from a week earlier. Canadian traffic rose 613 carloads for the week. The current tally in Canada is up 15% year-over-year. The Energy Information Administration reported output for the week through June 24th reached 12.129 million barrels per day, the highest weekly average since April of 2020. Tallies from the week before were delayed by what were called systems issues that blocked or delayed several regular government reports. EIA now says output for the week through June 17th averaged just over 12 million barrels per day. The all-time record weekly production report from EIA dates back to February of 2020, when the average reached 13.174 million barrels per day. US crude inventories dropped by 2.8 million barrels last week, to 415.6 million barrels as of June 24th. The Energy Information Administration says stockpiles are about 13% below the five-year seasonal average. Total motor gasoline inventories increased by 2.6 million barrels last week and are about 8% below the five-year average for this time of year. EIA reports crude imports dropped 200-thousand barrels to six million barrels per day. The four week rolling average show imports 5.1 percent lower than the same four weeks last year. Houston-based pipeline company Targa Resources has agreed to acquire Lucid Energy, one of the largest natural gas processors in the Permian Basin, in a deal valued at $3.55 billion. Lucid gathers, treats and processes natural gas in the Delaware Basin, the portion of the Permian Basin that straddles West Texas and New Mexico. The firm has natural gas processing capacity of around 1.4 billion cubic feet per day. A trade group says Texas employment in the oil patch dropped for the first time in four months. According to the Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association (TIPRO), direct employment in exploration and production for May was over 188-thousand, down 1,400 jobs from April but still an increase of 25,500 positions over a year earlier. The group the industry payed $666 million in severance taxes in April, the highest in history and nearly double the total paid in April of last year. President Joe Biden said he’ll ask U.S. allies in the Persian Gulf region to boost oil production when he meets with them during a trip to Saudi Arabia next month. But recent news accounts indicate that is not something that can happen quickly. According to its own market analysis, the so-called OPEC-Plus crude export alliance is now half a billion barrels behind in its pledge to increase supplies. That's 2.7 million barrels a day below their collective output targets. Last week, the UAE and Saudi oil ministers told world leaders and energy ministers they're already pumping about as much as they can.&nbsp;&nbsp;

News from the Oil Patch: Oil prices dip below $100

At the June 20 Great Bend City Council meeting,
councilmember Lindsey Krom-Craven asked if there were possible incentives available
to get more residents interested in serving on the city council. 
In June, Krom-Craven suggested incentives that the city already funds such as
swim passes to the pool and memberships to a gym. At Tuesday’s meeting,
Krom-Craven recommended a monetary incentive. 
"After several discussions with Mayor Cody Schmidt, City Administrator Kendal Francis and myself, the only thing that was determined to be a fair value, because our council is blessed with being diverse in ages, was a meeting allowance," said Krom-Craven. 
The five-member Barton County Commission has paid board members. The
eight-member Great Bend City Council, plus a mayor, are unpaid positions. Generally, the county commission has seen more interest in candidates filing for office. 
Great Bend City Councilmember Alan Moeder said he would refuse any payment and would be concerned residents would run for office for the money and not the
care of the city. 
Councilmember Natalie Towns said it’s a shame that more people don’t run for
office, and Jolene Biggs said the city has to be financially responsible when
considering paying eight board members and potentially a mayor. 
"I do think there is an issue with people not wanting to run for office," said Towns.

"I don't think it has anything to do with money though," responded Biggs. "I don't think we can give enough of a financial stipend that is going to entice people to run. That's my personal opinion." 
The council agreed to discuss the possibility of paying councilmembers at a
future work session.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Fourth of July fireworks are fun. And now it's time for the cleanup. Great Bend's Code Enforcement Supervisor Art Keffer reminds residents that all Independence Day trash needs to be disposed of in a timely manner.

"We usually give them several days before we go looking around," Keffer said. "If we have to write up anybody further, at that point it's trash and refuse, which becomes another issue."

According to Great Bend city ordinance, fireworks are to be discharged only on private property, not public streets. Keffer acknowledges many do use the street but asks that residents now clean up any trash left behind.

"If we wanted to be really painful about it, you're not supposed to be shooting them off in the streets," he said. "We know it's going to happen. What we do ask is that they, in a timely manner - we usually give them several days - to clean it up and make sure there are no hot embers before they throw it in the trash."

Any lingering trash may later fall into a violation of the city's trash and refuse ordinance. In those instances, violators may receive a 10-day courtesy letter from the city. If the violation is still not addressed, the city council may take abatement action on the property.

Reminder: Part of July 4 celebration is picking up trash

This is day 15 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers and the Kansas Grain and Feed Association.

Kansas farmers made significant progress completing wheat harvest in the last week, including many who spent the holiday weekend in a combine cab. In the weekly Crop Progress and Condition report, USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service noted 83 percent of the wheat crop has been harvested as of July 3, well ahead of 59 percent last year and 65 percent for the five-year average.&nbsp;

Nathan Larson — a one-man show — just started cutting in Riley and Clay counties with his first load delivered to the elevator on July 1. Larson is averaging about 40 bushels per acre on fields planted to LCS Chrome from Limagrain Cereal Seeds. Overall, Riley County is yielding a bit better around 50 bushels per acre. While he is happy with his fields considering the weather this year, he is concerned about recent rains bringing test weights down, a concern he has heard from several others. Even though growing conditions have been a bit different this year, Larson reported his harvest schedule is very similar to last year. If the rain holds off, he anticipates he will finish up in just two more days. Osborne County is now about 80 percent complete with harvest, according to Craig Mans, general manager with Midway Coop in Osborne. Before mid-harvest showers, test weights were averaging 63 pounds per bushel, but now have dropped to 59 pounds per bushel.

Yields range from 20 bushels per acre to 75 bushels per acre with wheat following summer fallow coming in significantly better. Protein is nothing special with the southern end of the coop’s territory above 12 percent and the northern end below 12 percent. Despite the mixed results, Mans noted wheat harvest is better than expected.

“Considering in April we didn’t even know if we would have a crop, most people are pretty happy,” he said.

Harvest in Sheridan County should also wrap-up by the end of this week, according to David Brooks with Hi-Plains Coop Association in Selden. The coop took in their first load on June 20, which puts harvest on a normal pace, thanks to newer combines and a slight decrease in wheat acres.

“Harvest is moving along with a break from a shower here or there that is very welcome,” Brooks said. “Overall, it’s going very smooth.”

Yields are averaging around 40 to 45 bushels per acre, but with a wide range from top to bottom depending on how much moisture the field received. The lowest yield so far was 1.1 bushels per acre from a field that received only 1.5 inches of moisture in the last 10 months. In contrast, the high yield thus far is 75 bushels per acre on wheat following summer fallow that caught some rain.

Protein has been average, but test weights have been excellent. The coop is averaging 61 pounds per bushel and test weights are staying steady even with little rains throughout harvest.

“Everything is going good, and everyone is pretty happy,” Brooks said. “We can’t ask for anything more than Mother Nature has given us.”

 </figure>This is day 15 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers and the Kansas Grain and Feed Association. Kansas farmers made significant progress completing wheat harvest in the last week, including many who spent the holiday weekend in a combine cab. In the weekly Crop Progress and Condition report, USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service noted 83 percent of the wheat crop has been harvested as of July 3, well ahead of 59 percent last year and 65 percent for the five-year average.&nbsp; Nathan Larson — a one-man show — just started cutting in Riley and Clay counties with his first load delivered to the elevator on July 1. Larson is averaging about 40 bushels per acre on fields planted to LCS Chrome from Limagrain Cereal Seeds. Overall, Riley County is yielding a bit better around 50 bushels per acre. While he is happy with his fields considering the weather this year, he is concerned about recent rains bringing test weights down, a concern he has heard from several others. Even though growing conditions have been a bit different this year, Larson reported his harvest schedule is very similar to last year. If the rain holds off, he anticipates he will finish up in just two more days. Osborne County is now about 80 percent complete with harvest, according to Craig Mans, general manager with Midway Coop in Osborne. Before mid-harvest showers, test weights were averaging 63 pounds per bushel, but now have dropped to 59 pounds per bushel. Yields range from 20 bushels per acre to 75 bushels per acre with wheat following summer fallow coming in significantly better. Protein is nothing special with the southern end of the coop’s territory above 12 percent and the northern end below 12 percent. Despite the mixed results, Mans noted wheat harvest is better than expected. “Considering in April we didn’t even know if we would have a crop, most people are pretty happy,” he said. Harvest in Sheridan County should also wrap-up by the end of this week, according to David Brooks with Hi-Plains Coop Association in Selden. The coop took in their first load on June 20, which puts harvest on a normal pace, thanks to newer combines and a slight decrease in wheat acres. “Harvest is moving along with a break from a shower here or there that is very welcome,” Brooks said. “Overall, it’s going very smooth.” Yields are averaging around 40 to 45 bushels per acre, but with a wide range from top to bottom depending on how much moisture the field received. The lowest yield so far was 1.1 bushels per acre from a field that received only 1.5 inches of moisture in the last 10 months. In contrast, the high yield thus far is 75 bushels per acre on wheat following summer fallow that caught some rain. Protein has been average, but test weights have been excellent. Day 15, Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

After an extra meeting ahead of the Fourth of July weekend, the Barton County Commission turned to a lighter agenda for Wednesday's regularly-scheduled meeting. The commission approved a bid for electrical work on a new sign at the health department, and also approved the purchase of a new ATV for county use.

Last month, the commission approved the purchase of a new electronic sign at the Barton County Health Department for $51,096. Mark's Custom Signs will install the digital sign but will not be handling the electrical work. Wednesday, Health Director Karen Winkelman asked for the funds required to complete the electrical work. The cost of the electrical work was removed from the original request for proposal (RFP). PNS Electric won the additional bid at $7,000.

"Half of it is coming from our maintenance of buildings," Winkelman said. "That's because the breaker box was going to have to be replaced regardless. The other $3,500 is going to come from state formula, and that is grant."

Winkelman said several of the health department's grants require messaging to the public and the new sign will better accomplish that.

"Twenty-four/seven we are able to  get messages out to the public for upcoming events or emergency-type situations," she said. "We can get it displayed quickly."

The anticipated start date for the installation of the sign was not known as of Wednesday's meeting.

The commission also approved the purchase of a Polaris Sportsman XP from Straub's Powersports for $10,490, to be paid from the Noxious Weed Equipment Replacement Fund. The new ATV will be used for spraying weeds in the warm months and clearing sidewalks around the courthouse during the winter.

Barton Commission moves forward on electrical work at Health Dept.

Following delays in the construction process, the new Hoisington city
pool officially opened last Friday. Carrothers Construction handled the
construction on the $3 million facility in Bicentennial Park. 

Hoisington City
Manager Jonathan Mitchell said the city’s “quality of life” sales tax helped
fund the new pool to replace the old facility built in 1962. 
"We're stoked," said Mitchell. "It's been 60 years since Hoisington dedicated its last pool. The voters overwhelmingly supported the sales tax that is helping to finance this." 
Admission is $3 for anyone three years of age or older, unless you submitted a
pool form prior to May 15. 
"This is an ADA-compliant pool with a zero-depth entry, splash pad, two slides, basketball goal and a diving board," said Mitchell. 
The Hoisington pool will be open Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. for
open swim and again from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The Commission accepted the $7,000.00 bid from P &amp; S Electric Inc.  Karen Winkelman, Health Director, joined in this presentation.  She was late to the Commission meeting as she was helping a citizen that had fallen outside the Courthouse. 

It was announced that County officials may meet with Orazem &amp; Scalora Engineering, P.A. and DMA Architects, P.A., as relates to the feasibility study reference the replacement of the existing heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC).  At this time, efforts will center on the Fourth Floor of the Courthouse.  The meeting begins at 2:00 p.m. in the Commission Chamber, Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main – Room 106, Great Bend, Kansas. 

Discussed the fireworks issue and the compromise reached by the Commission in reference to the expanded discharge period.  Discussion then moved into emergency call statistics relative to the Independence Day holiday and the County’s radio system.

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (7/5)

While many residents were busy celebrating Independence Day Monday, the Great Bend Fire Department was extra busy putting out fires. After responding to just nine fire and EMS calls on July 4, 2021, the department responded to 38 total calls this Fourth of July.

Brent Smith, deputy chief with the Great Bend Fire Department, blamed dry weather, high winds, and low humidity for the increased call load. The department responded to two structure fires Monday, including a significant fire in the 1900 block of Van Buren in Great Bend.

"One of them was just minor roof damage, some wood shingles," Smith said. "We got it stopped before it got to the main body of the house. The other one, the house will probably be a total loss."

Given time and staff, the local fire department uses one of its two investigators to determine the cause of a fire. Smith said the Van Buren fire was likely caused by fireworks that landed in a gutter with dry leaves.

"The Van Buren house was significant enough, and we were busy enough, we had assistance from the state fire marshal's office," he said. "They sent an investigator to help us with that one."

Within the city limits Monday, Great Bend Fire and EMS responded to 17 calls for grass, trash, or brush fires, with at least 15 of those calls being fireworks related. EMS responded to seven calls. The department also responded to 13 grass or stubble fires in the county, with at least 10 of those attributed to fireworks.

The City of Great Bend anticipated receiving their financial audit presentation on
June 6. Nearly a month later, and the city is still waiting to have their audit
finalized because of a delay involving the Great Bend Public Library. 
City Administrator Kendal Francis said Tuesday night that the library went through an accounting software
conversion and there are differing budget balances. The city’s auditor flagged
the issue as a material violation. 
"I don't know if the library will end up fixing it on their own or get a CPA to assist them," said Francis. "We're not able to and the auditor is not able to because that would be an ethical violation. They (library) used a local company as their accountant. They wanted to switch that over and take care of their bookkeeping on their own for budget savings." 
The library operates as its own entity, with a separate board, but the city
owns the infrastructure and provides funding to the library each year as an
outside agency. 
Francis said the library employee that handles the accounting has been out with
a long-term sickness, which has likely compounded the delay.

The delay had councilmembers considering if the library should conduct their own, separate audit in the future. "Honestly, this has drug on for a while, and there doesn't seem to be any urgency on their part," said Francis.

"It almost makes you wonder if they're (library) trying to cover something up," said Great Bend City Council member Alan Moeder.

"I hope that is not correct," responded Francis. "It is completely on them (library). It does not affect our finances directly, but it does delay us getting our city audit." 
The library has requested $650,000 from the city for the 2023 budget.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Library issue causing delay in Great Bend’s audit report

The rainy weather in late May resulted in the postponement of Mental Health Awareness Day activities, which have been rescheduled for 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2 at downtown’s Jack Kilby Square, 1400 Main.

“We were disappointed that our special day was rained out on May 24 but are thankful we could reschedule,” said Julie Kramp, executive director of The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation. “We will share information about the many local resources available, while making connections that can lead to better mental health in our community.”

One of The Center’s display booths will focus on #Zero Reasons Why, the local teen-led, suicide-prevention program. In a neighboring booth, local therapists will share information and answer questions.

Many of The Center’s community partners will offer fun events and educational opportunities for all ages at their booths. Some will serve food and others will showcase their displays and provide handouts.

“Arts and crafts and kids’ games also are on the agenda,” Kramp commented. “This truly is an opportunity to engage with one another at all levels.”

There is no charge for entities that want to set up a booth.

Kramp noted that The Center’s staff deserves even more credit for following through on their plans after the event had to be postponed.

“They take The Center’s sponsorship of this popular annual event very seriously,” Kramp explained. “They know how important mental-health information is to our whole community and are eager to help educate the public about it.”

When we switched to a Fair that welcomed both 4-H and open exhibits, the schedule shifted to an earlier start date. It was an adjustment the first few years, but I would venture to say that now it would be hard to revert to a fair in late summer.

Today, my goal is to encourage your participation in the Fair by exhibiting an item or two. I know many of you who are reading this enjoy hobbies of photography, woodworking, baking, fiber arts or others. It is a simple process to enter something in the Fair. Of course, today many things are accomplished on-line. If that is not your thing, you can bring your items to the Expo area west of Great Bend on 10th Street and someone will help you with the process.Check-in of open class exhibits except perishables like food and horticulture is set for Wednesday, July 6th, from 8 AM to noon and 6 – 7 PM. Thursday, July 7th, from 8 AM to 9:30 AM, food, horticulture and crop exhibits will come in.Some special events you won’t want to miss include the Business Appreciation Breakfast and Chamber Coffee set to begin at 7:30 AM on Thursday, July 7th, in Expo II. The Dick Dougherty family serves up a full breakfast including pancakes and sausage and 4-H clubs donate some great door prizes.An event I am helping organize is the Family Fun Bike ride set for Saturday, July 9th, from 8-9 AM. This is our second time to offer this fun and educational event to encourage families to bike together and focus on safety. I have over 40 helmets for riders of all ages to give away on a first come first served basis. The bike ride will be held on the runway just west of the Great Bend Armory.Don’t miss out on any of the fun events I have mentioned.
