ELLSWORTH COUNTY —A Kansas man was injured in an accident just after 1p.m. Tuesday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Ford Explorer driven by Robert Davis, 79, Hutchinson, was eastbound on Kansas 140 and came to a stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Kansas 156.

The SUV then proceeded through the intersection. A northeast bound 2019 Infiniti QX driven by 39-year-old Kimberly&nbsp;Ussery of Claflin, struck the Ford.

EMS transported Davis to Ellsworth County Medical Center.&nbsp;Ussery was not transported. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas man hospitalized after Ellsworth Co. crash

On Sunday, July 3, at approximately 12:20 a.m., an officer with the Great Bend Police Department made a traffic stop in the 1500 block of 11th Street for expired registration. 

 The officer contacted the driver, Corey Peverley, age 44, who had a suspended driver's license.  Additionally, there was no insurance for the vehicle. 

 Peverley was arrested for the traffic violations and the department's K9 officer was contacted to respond.  K9 "Menta" made a positive alert on the vehicle which was then searched.  During the search, officers located a quantity of suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Peverley was taken to the Barton County Jail where he was booked on possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, no drug tax stamp, driving while suspended, expired registration and no proof of insurance.

EPA Resurrects Radical&nbsp;Atrazine Proposal, Growers Encouraged to Act The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reopened yesterday the finalized re-registration of atrazine, a widely utilized herbicide in sorghum production, and is proposing to replace the approved 15 parts per billion (ppb) concentration equivalent level of concern (CE-LOC) in the aquatic assessment with the ultra-low 3.4 ppb CE-LOC proposed in 2016—a severely restricted level not supported by credible scientific evidence that would have a devastating impact on farmers. National Sorghum Producers strongly disagrees with the EPA’s proposed level of concern for atrazine and&nbsp;is actively seeking&nbsp;<a href="https://sorghumgrowers.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c7d6bd689602a83f8b92ea37d&amp;id=04ef3d46a0&amp;e=d30ea29a91" target="_blank">input</a>&nbsp;from its grower community.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href="https://sorghumgrowers.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c7d6bd689602a83f8b92ea37d&amp;id=b8dcf52524&amp;e=d30ea29a91" target="_blank">proposal</a>&nbsp;(EPA-HQ-OPP-2013-0266) is published in the Federal Register, and EPA will accept public comments for 60 days.&nbsp; “This is a tool our farmers cannot stand to lose,” NSP CEO Tim Lust said in an NSP statement. “Climate-smart agriculture relies on tools like atrazine particularly for sustainable farming practices like conservation tillage and no-till."&nbsp;In the announcement, EPA stated it “intends to seek external peer review of the risks to the aquatic plant community that underlies this proposed risk management strategy.” NSP and its partners at the Triazene Network maintain that before any part of the proposal is implemented, EPA must stand by its promises to convene a formal FIFRA Scientific Advisory Panel to specifically explore the scientific basis for the proposed CE-LOC revision and ensure high-quality research supports the proposal. PRATT COUNTY—Two juveniles were injured after a weekend accident in rural Pratt County.

Just after 5p.m. Sunday, Pratt County EMS responded to 90294 SE 10th after report of a boy unresponsive at the scene of a UTV accident, according to Sheriff James White.

First responders found two injured boys. EMS transported them to Pratt Regional Medical Center. One victim had life threatening injuries and was later air-lifted to Wesley Medical Center.

The sheriff's office on Tuesday did not released an update on their condition. Their names have also not been released.

If you have been to The University of Kansas Health System Great Bend Campus in the past few months, you may have noticed construction near the operating rooms and area where surgical implements and other medical tools are sterilized.

Construction on the project is expected to be complete by late summer. All four operating rooms, the perioperative areas and sterile processing department are being updated and equipped with new patient safety features.

Each operating room (OR) renovation takes four to six weeks to complete. Only one OR at a time is undergoing renovation. Because the scheduling team is exceptionally efficient, patient surgeries and other procedures aren’t affected by the construction.

Renovation in the ORs includes removal of unnecessary doors and windows. All wood doors in the OR area have been replaced with doors made of nonporous materials. The ORs and perioperative areas are getting new floors, wall surfaces, countertops and in some areas ceilings that have nonporous, cleanable surfaces to improve prevention of infections. Two OR suites will also get new lighting.

The sterile processing department will gain about 250 square feet. This means sterile processing will take place in one location, rather than multiple locations. “All new sterile processing equipment means more sterilization can happen in the same amount of time, because the new equipment sterilizes medical equipment and instrumentation more quickly,” said Megan Johns, manager of perioperative services.

The entire perioperative and sterile processing staff has been displaced at one time or another, Johns said. Despite these challenges, their work saw little disruption.

“The staff has been amazing to work around the construction and keep everything running smoothly,” said Josh Gant, director of ancillary and support services. “With this $4.6 million investment in the hospital and community, we will meet or exceed standards for patient care and see the best patient outcomes.”

Surgery areas at Great Bend Campus get upgrades

Sparks flew for an El Dorado couple with a special wedding ceremony on Independence Day. Monday afternoon, Mark Poe and Starla Thomas were united in marriage at the T&amp;L Fireworks stand just north of the Great Bend city limits. 

"We were going to get married in the park on the bridge," Mark said. "The T&amp;L people, along with Starla's cousin (Rhonda Shelton), decided maybe we should have the wedding at the fireworks stand. They started putting all these things together and getting ready for us."

While Independence Day is Mark's favorite holiday, it was not the couple's first choice for a wedding date. The pair was originally scheduled to wed on April 2, but Starla lost her father, Lloyd Thomas, and her stepmother, Jackie Thomas, in late February.

"They passed away 11 days apart, and Starla decided she just couldn't do it," said Mark. "We changed the date to July 30. We had a big 80s-themed wedding planned in El Dorado. Just about a week ago, Starla thought let's do it on the Fourth of July in Great Bend, with family."

And so they did. Shelton baked the wedding cake ahead of Monday's ceremony, and an announcement from T&amp;L staff brought shopping to a brief halt around 1 p.m.

"She got up and made an announcement for everybody to stop shopping, to stop what they were doing to take five minutes so we could hold the wedding there," Mark said. "It was strange because everything just came to a standstill. Everybody just stopped."

Mark and Starla return home to El Dorado as newlyweds, but not before shooting off some free fireworks from T&amp;L.

"They were great people," Mark said. "They went above and beyond. They let us have our wedding in their building, they stopped business for five minutes or so, they gave us a $100 gift certificate for fireworks, and they also gave us about a $45 firework that was called Shotgun Wedding."

Red, white, and blue wedding: Couple marries at GB fireworks stand

The 2022 chip and seal with a fog coat project in Great Bend is scheduled to begin Thursday, July 7, circumstances pending. 

The areas to be affected by this project are select streets north of 24th Street between Williams and Washington, 17th&nbsp;Street Terrace area, south of Broadway Avenue between McKinley and Eisenhower, with the addition of the 1000 block of Walnut Street and the 800 to 1000 blocks of MacArthur Road. 

Again, this will be select streets that have been assessed to benefit the most from this style of maintenance.

Once started, the project is expected to take three days. Please be attentive as crews work in these areas. The city will make every effort to minimize the impact to traffic and thank you for your patience.

Street improvements starting soon in Great Bend

With most shorebirds moving on from Cheyenne Bottoms in June, and with water levels waning as temperatures rise, it's time for some different activities at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. Over the next two weeks, KWEC will host a trip to Kansas Trophy Experience south of Great Bend, and host the newly-minted Minnow Races at this year's After Harvest Festival in Ellinwood.

On July 11, school-aged kids and their families are welcome to participate in this month's WILD program activity. The trip takes off from KWEC at 9:30 a.m. to visit Kansas Trophy Experience south of Great Bend. The topic this month is raising pheasant chicks.

"Our WILD club is just a monthly activity," said KWEC Director Curtis Wolf. "It's open to anyone, but really designed to get kids off of screens and provide some interesting experiences out in nature."

KWEC will have limited transportation available from its facility to Kansas Trophy Experience, just south of the River Bridge in Great Bend, and drive-up participants are also welcome. Wolf requested all interested parties to call and register with KWEC prior to the tour.

KWEC's turtle races have been a big hit at Ellinwood's After Harvest Festival in recent years. But with conditions less than ideal for grabbing turtles this summer, Wolf is mixing things up after the After Harvest Festival Parade on July 16.

"With the water levels down, it's going to be a little harder to set those traps," Wolf said. "We're going to shift gears, and instead of turtle races, I think we're going to be doing minnow races."

This year's festivities will take place after the parade in the Ellinwood City Park next to the splash pad.

Wolf also reminds area residents to take advantage of the Summer Sunflower app. Through Aug. 14, the app provides free admission to many of the state's top museums, zoos, and historic landmarks. Visit sunflowersummer.org for more information.

Election season is just around the corner. July 12 is the final day to register to vote ahead of the Aug. 2 primary election. The August ballot will include several contested primaries in Barton County, as well as the constitutional amendment question pertaining to abortion.

"Unaffiliated voters can declare up to and on Election Day," said Barton County Clerk and Election Officer Bev Schmeidler. "They can pick a party if they want to vote that party ticket. If you are already registered as one of the major parties, you cannot unaffiliate. That deadline passed on June 10th. That can't be done until the election is over and closed."

The United States Supreme Court's recent reversal of Roe v. Wade has put the abortion issue back on the front burner. The proposed constitutional amendment regarding a state right to abortion is expected to bring out more voters than usual. Unaffiliated voters and those registered as Libertarians can still vote on the constitutional amendment.

Locally, the Republican primary will feature several contested races. There are currently four candidates in the Barton County Commission, District 1 race, and two candidates are vying for spots in each of the fourth and fifth districts.

"As long as I've been in this office, I don't think we've had that much interest in our county commisison races before," Schmeidler said. "That's definitely different. A lot of people are interested and that's a good thing."

Early voting may begin as early as July 13 around Kansas. Schmeidler said early voting in Barton County will depend on the availability of materials.

'That's dependent on if we have all of our media, if we have our ballots, and everything we need for the machines back," she said. "When we start early voting, we'll do it from 8-5, Monday through Friday, up until noon the day before the election."

Primary day polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2. Photo IDs are required, and both machine and paper ballots will be available.

The Great Bend Fire Department responded to 38 calls on Monday, July 4.

Of the 38 calls, there were 31 grass/trash calls, five EMS calls and two structure fires.

In an effort to post public notices and replace an aging sign west of
town, the Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce is seeking funds to install an
electronic sign at the southeast corner of the Santa Fe Boulevard and Main
Street intersection. 

Ellinwood Chamber Executive Director Jordan Waite said the sign will be able to highlight existing businesses and update those driving by on
upcoming events. 
"We did a survey, and there is more traffic there than out by the 'Y'," said Waite. "There is a lot more traffic by that stop light so we teamed up with the American Legion to place it there." 
A sign committee wants to install a 6' x 8', one-sided sign near the signal
light. Waite said there are a pair of fundraisers to help pay for the sign,
installation and maintenance. 
"We have a Lucky 13 Gun Raffle with 500 tickets," said Waite. "The drawing will be Aug. 20 which is another fundraiser we're doing. A golf tournament will be that day, and we're looking for hole sponsors and corporate sponsors. That money will go to toward our sign project." 
The sign committee’s fundraising goal is $50,000. To view how to donate or get

USD 428 Food Service will resume FREE summer meals beginigng Tuesday, July 5!&nbsp;

Each weekday, USD 428 Food Service will provide free meals for ALL Children 18 years of age and younger at the above elementary school locations from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the gyms. Children will be provided with a to-go lunch and a breakfast pack. They can choose to eat in the gyms or take the meals home.&nbsp;

Great Bend City Council meeting agenda (7/5)

It's good to stay hydrated as Kansas temperatures reach their peak. And the water in Great Bend is good for that. The city recently issued its Consumer Confidence Report for 2022, and things are going swimmingly.

"We really do have good water, and really clean water," said Reuben Martin, Great Bend's utilities superintendent. "There's really nothing we can improve on, much of any of it would make the water better. Here we don't treat the water, we just pump it up out of the ground, chlorinate it, and send it to the customers."

Great Bend tests its water 15 times per month in accordance to the Revised Total Coliform Rule for microbiological contaminants. Taking samples from meter boxes eliminates contaminants that may be specific to the inside of each home.

"We go to addresses in different zones, and we go to the meter box out there in front or behind the house," Martin said. "We take the sample out of there and send it in. That shows the quality in our system." 

Regulated contaminants like arsenic, selenium and chromium fell well-below maximum-allowed levels, and nitrates, which typically come from fertilizer, came in just below the maximum-allowed levels. Calcium carbonate levels in the water did exceed recommended levels for water hardness.

But all in all, Martin is pleased with the results and said the city will stay its course on provided good drinking water for its residents.

"We don't have any major changes," he said. "It's pretty much the same every year. They haven't come to us and said anything is posing an issue by rising in levels or anything."

The
drought monitor report as of Tuesday, June 28 indicated no real change for our
area as we continue in moderate drought.&nbsp;
The extreme drought in Southwest Kansas is almost back to Pawnee County
again.&nbsp; The eastern half of the state is
in pretty good shape with only a few areas of abnormally dry conditions.&nbsp; The six to ten-day outlook (July 5 to 9) indicates
a 70 to 80% chance of above normal temperatures and normal precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (July 7 to 13)
indicates a 60 to 70% chance of above normal temperatures and a 33 to 40%
chance of above normal precipitation.&nbsp; In
fact, almost the entire continental U.S. is forecasted for above normal
temperatures during this time.&nbsp; Wheat
harvest in the area is essentially wrapped up and as expected, yields range
from under twenty bushels per acre to over fifty and even a report or two of
seventy bushels per acre.&nbsp; Test weights
and proteins overall look pretty good.&nbsp;
Today, as we celebrate Independence Day, how does agriculture factor
into the country’s independence?

How is agriculture linked to this country’s
independence?&nbsp; Let’s go back about two
hundred and forty-five years.&nbsp; Many of
the signers of the Declaration of Independence were farmers and if not farmers,
gardeners.&nbsp; Even an “urbanite” like
Benjamin Franklin had an interest in agriculture advocating for gypsum as
fertilizer and for crop insurance for farmers.&nbsp;
And don’t forget Poor Richard’s Almanac.&nbsp;
We often think of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and other cities
during colonial times.&nbsp; However, with an
estimated population of 2.5 million people, the largest city in the colonies
was Philadelphia with about 40,000 people followed by New York with 21,000 and
Boston with 17,000.&nbsp; Most colonists were
rural and farmed as only around five percent of the population lived in
cities.&nbsp; Why bring this up?&nbsp; Most of the Continental Army and militias
were comprised of farmers.&nbsp; Not only
since they were the bulk of the population but also as they were the most
likely to be trained in using firearms.&nbsp; 

During and after the end of the
Revolutionary War, the leadership of the newly formed United States valued
agriculture for economic, societal, and moral reasons.&nbsp; They saw it as the foundation of their
democratic republic.&nbsp; Indeed, it was the
production and export of agricultural commodities and value-added products that
helped keep the country solvent and able to trade with other nations, primarily
Europe.

During the Civil War, again men
working the land made up a majority of union forces.&nbsp; Before, during, and after the war, a
demographic change had started.&nbsp; While in
1776, only five percent of the population lived in cities by the time 1900
arrived, that had decreased to less than two-thirds being rural.&nbsp; This was due to advances both scientific and
through technology that allowed production to increase with fewer people having
to farm.

&nbsp;Today, less than three percent of
the population is directly tied to agriculture, yet our independence is still
tied in great part too that three percent.&nbsp;
We are able to not only feed our country but help feed much of the
world, political turmoil aside, creating a more stable world.&nbsp; One of the major reasons this country has
endured this long and has as much influence as it does in the world, are all
the factors that allow us to be an agricultural juggernaut with only a fraction
of our total population.&nbsp; Happy Fourth of

drought monitor report as of Tuesday, June 28 indicated no real change for our
area as we continue in moderate drought.&nbsp;
The extreme drought in Southwest Kansas is almost back to Pawnee County
again.&nbsp; The eastern half of the state is
in pretty good shape with only a few areas of abnormally dry conditions.&nbsp; The six to ten-day outlook (July 5 to 9) indicates
a 70 to 80% chance of above normal temperatures and normal precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (July 7 to 13)
indicates a 60 to 70% chance of above normal temperatures and a 33 to 40%
chance of above normal precipitation.&nbsp; In
fact, almost the entire continental U.S. is forecasted for above normal
temperatures during this time.&nbsp; Wheat
harvest in the area is essentially wrapped up and as expected, yields range
from under twenty bushels per acre to over fifty and even a report or two of
seventy bushels per acre.&nbsp; Test weights
and proteins overall look pretty good.&nbsp;
Today, as we celebrate Independence Day, how does agriculture factor
into the country’s independence?How is agriculture linked to this country’s
independence?&nbsp; Let’s go back about two
hundred and forty-five years.&nbsp; Many of
the signers of the Declaration of Independence were farmers and if not farmers,
gardeners.&nbsp; Even an “urbanite” like
Benjamin Franklin had an interest in agriculture advocating for gypsum as
fertilizer and for crop insurance for farmers.&nbsp;
And don’t forget Poor Richard’s Almanac.&nbsp;
We often think of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and other cities
during colonial times.&nbsp; However, with an
estimated population of 2.5 million people, the largest city in the colonies
was Philadelphia with about 40,000 people followed by New York with 21,000 and
Boston with 17,000.&nbsp; Most colonists were
rural and farmed as only around five percent of the population lived in
cities.&nbsp; Why bring this up?&nbsp; Most of the Continental Army and militias
were comprised of farmers.&nbsp; Not only
since they were the bulk of the population but also as they were the most
likely to be trained in using firearms.&nbsp; During and after the end of the
Revolutionary War, the leadership of the newly formed United States valued
agriculture for economic, societal, and moral reasons.&nbsp; They saw it as the foundation of their
democratic republic.&nbsp; Indeed, it was the
production and export of agricultural commodities and value-added products that
helped keep the country solvent and able to trade with other nations, primarily
Europe.During the Civil War, again men
working the land made up a majority of union forces.&nbsp; Before, during, and after the war, a
demographic change had started.&nbsp; While in
1776, only five percent of the population lived in cities by the time 1900
arrived, that had decreased to less than two-thirds being rural.&nbsp; This was due to advances both scientific and
through technology that allowed production to increase with fewer people having
to farm.&nbsp;Today, less than three percent of
the population is directly tied to agriculture, yet our independence is still
tied in great part too that three percent.&nbsp;
We are able to not only feed our country but help feed much of the
world, political turmoil aside, creating a more stable world.&nbsp; One of the major reasons this country has
endured this long and has as much influence as it does in the world, are all
the factors that allow us to be an agricultural juggernaut with only a fraction

Governor Laura Kelly today announced the Kansas Children’s Cabinet will begin matching dollar-for-dollar investments made by local Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (DPIL) programs to accelerate efforts to promote a love of reading in every Kansas child. This additional funding is made possible by a line item to add $500,000 to the Children’s Initiatives Fund that the Governor included in her proposed Fiscal Year 2023 budget, which the legislature passed. Kansas children who participate in the Imagination Library program will have an age-appropriate book mailed to them from birth until they turn 5 years old. The goal of this additional funding is to increase the number of children signed up and expand the reach of local contributions.

“We know that one of the most important factors for early childhood learning and development is an early introduction to books and being read to at home,”&nbsp;said Governor Laura Kelly.&nbsp;“Kansas community organizations currently connect more than 42,500 children with the gift of books from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library each month. This new funding will enable the program to reach even more Kansas children.”

Since September 2021, the Kansas Children’s Cabinet has been working to expand access to DPIL to every child under five years old throughout Kansas – no matter their family’s income level or background. Since every family must be signed up through a local community program, enlisting nonprofits to participate is essential. Efforts to date have resulted in an increase from 82 to 98 community programs, adding coverage in 65 additional zip codes across a total of 91 counties. This additional funding will help cultivate even more local community programs.

“As a father, I know the joy that comes from reading with your child,” said State Representative Troy Waymaster.&nbsp;“Shortly after our son was born, we enrolled him in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. All children in the state of Kansas should have the ability to participate in this program as well. I am committed to helping ensure that all children in the state of Kansas, from ages zero to five, will have this opportunity.”&nbsp;

More funding to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library programs in KS

A local committee in Russell is looking to raise approximately $1.5
million to replace the outdated playground at Russell Play Park at Memorial
Park. 
The park will include an accessible and inclusive playground for everyone to
join. 
The renovation of the Play Park is a community led effort. The playground will
encompass nearly 1,600 square feet in Memorial Park.

On July 11, school-age kids and their families can either meet at Kansas Trophy Experience at 10am, or KWEC can provide rides from the KWEC at 9:30 a.m.

KWEC program to tour Kansas Trophy Experience

For the past 15 years, Paige Wagner has been staying in her lane. And all that bowling is paying off. In the past year, Wagner competed in the U.S. National team trials and just missed a spot on national television. A former state runner-up for Great Bend High School, Wagner recently signed a letter of intent to bowl for national powerhouse Wichita State University.

"It's definitely been my dream to go there the whole time," Wagner said. "Now that they've reached out to me and offered it, that's for sure where I want to go. I'm excited to be on the team."

Wagner, the daughter of Cheri and Tim Wagner of Great Bend, has built an impressive resume on the lanes. The 18-year-old is a four-time Youth Scratch Masters champion, a two-time Southwest Gold Tour champion, and a Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Junior National Qualifier champion.

Wagner took a perfect game into the 10th frame of what proved to be her final high school game. She finished with a 289 as the individual Class 5-1A state runner-up, and also moved the Lady Panthers into second place as a team. Her 289 individual game and 725 series at state that year are both school records, as is her 209 season average as a junior. Wagner also excelled in the classroom with a 3.8 GPA.

Wagner was hoping for a big senior season at GBHS before a nagging hip injury took her down just five frames into her first game in February.

"It was definitely very hard for me," she said. "It definitely shows how hard it is to get injured while playing a sport for high school. I just pushed through it and knew I could get past it, and continue with the big things I knew were coming up."

Wagner first suffered the hip injury of September 2021,  but that hardly slowed her down. After six weeks of therapy, she was back on the lanes in Las Vegas for New Year's Eve, trying to find a spot on the U.S. National Team. The end results were disappointing, but Wagner was among the youngest of hundreds of the nation's top bowlers that featured many professionals and top-tier college athletes. Wagner shared the lanes with her favorite professional bowler Shannon O'Keefe.

"It was very nervewracking but it was a good experience to be able to be bowl with them, and just getting to know how it is to bowl with them and how they do things," said Wagner.

Two weeks after that, Wagner bowled in Euless, Texas, just outside of Dallas, at the PBA Junior Nationals. She finished in the top-10 but re-aggravated the hip injury before heading back into high school competition.

After another six weeks of therapy, Wagner is back at it. On July 3, the Wagners head south to Oklahoma City for the Youth Scratch Masters Tournament of Champions. On July 12, she will open two weeks of competition at the Junior Gold Championships in Grand Rapids, Mich. Last year, Wagner tied for fifth out of 570 bowlers and just missed a televised tournament by one placing. She won $3,000 in scholarship money at that tournament a year ago, bringing her total to nearly $17,000.

The key to her success, Wagner said, is two-fold: lots of good work and a healthy attitude.

"I've been bowling since I was three," she said. "I'm out there every week, almost every day. Since the injury I haven't been bowling a whole lot, but usually I'm out there every day.

"You're definitely going to make mistakes in bowling, or any sport in general. Make sure to keep the attitude good and positive. Don't worry about what happened and just move forward."
