The nearly 100-year-old baseball 
institution of American Legion is hurting. It’s a 20th century 
organization struggling against the conventions of 2022.

It
 appears the 21st century is challenging the mid-century values of 
Legion ball with the existential indifference of Generation Z and a 
brave new America.

The
 Washington Post reported in 2017 that America Legion lost 25% of its 
teams nationwide over a 10-season span, adding that the figure was close
 to 80% in some states.

According to the Bangor Daily News, Oklahoma has two Legion teams, Georgia seven, Texas eight and Arizona nine.

The beleaguered youth program is having trouble in Kansas too.

“This
 is the first year, that I know of there has not been Emporia Legion,” 
said Lebo-Waverly head baseball coach Jason Konrade via email. “It's an 
unusual summer for baseball in the Emporia area with no legion. That’s 
big news in itself.”

There are a few reasons for Legion’s dwindling popularity in the Jayhawk state.

Foremost
 seems to be the decade-long emergence of showcase tournaments that 
promote the player, not the team. They’re basically expensive 
opportunities to display individual skill sets to college coaches.

“I
 think these showcase baseball tournaments also kind of putting a hurt 
on…Topeka and Kansas City Schools used to have tons of Legion programs,”
 said Ryan Redeker, who coached an Emporia independent team this summer.
 “Topeka has one or two Legion programs now (one, according to the 
Legion website, which appears to only have information through the 2021 
season), and I don't think there's a single one in Kansas City at all.”

He rests the blame on these tournaments, saying summer baseball has been trending in this direction.

“Everybody's
 going to these showcase baseball things where you go play in front of 
college coaches on the weekend,” Redeker said. “All the elite players 
have gone to that, so your Legion has gone down to your smaller type 
schools.”

But even the best players from smaller schools or rural communities are defecting to elite showcase teams.

Tanner
 Willhoft, who coaches the Hays America Baseball Club 18U team, said the
 reality of the situation is that Legion ball isn’t a viable option.

“We had nobody really close to 
us at the AAA level of American Legion that we could really play…So it 
was one of those things where it's like, we don't have the competition 
to play, why are we doing it?”

Willhoft
 grew up playing Legion ball but agrees that showcase tournaments have 
become the preference and de facto system of summer baseball.

“In
 the summer, (Legion baseball) gives you great structure…where you have 
something to play for at the end of the year,” Willhoft said. “Whereas 
now, everybody's playing a different tournament every weekend. So you 
win one tournament. It's like, ‘Oh, nice you won a tournament,’ but not 
every team in the state is trying to get to it anymore.”

Kansas American Legion chairman Joe Durham said the organization is experiencing a slow time right now but is on the mend.

“We’re
 down this year there’s no doubt about it,” he said. “Covid hit us hard.
 We were just starting to get our feet back under us, and then we had 
some problems, and now we’re working our way through them.”

Durham cited scholarships as one of the reasons kids and parents are still drawn to American Legion.

“(Showcase tournaments) try to get coaches to come and give scholarships,” he said. “Well, we’re going to offer a scholarship.”

American Legion provides scholarships to qualifying high school seniors in the amount of $500 and potentially $2,500.

Durham also said parents have tired of the steep costs of showcase baseball, where the money is pocketed by coaches.

The
 Florida Times-Union reported that one of the reasons youth baseball is 
on the decline is the showcase cost. The publication stated, “Many 
families simply do not have the financial ability to pay for their sons 
to be on a traveling showcase team. One organization in Florida costs 
$3,800 for just one summer. Others are between $2,200 and $2,500.”

Emporia High School baseball 
coach Anthony Markowitz said the cost-benefit aspect of American Legion 
doesn’t favor the teams or players either.

“I
 think the only thing I would have to say is…the cost that teams had to 
pay for registration and insurance was more than what we got in return,”
 he said in a text message. “Kansas American Legion Baseball really 
never started until the middle of July when they organized Zone 
Tournaments. So we’re paying about $2,000 and only guaranteed a spot in a
 double elimination tournament.”

He said neighboring states’ programs do a better job administratively and structurally.

What has happened to American Legion baseball in Kansas?

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with USD 428, will host the 7th Annual Great Bend Business Showcase. This teacher appreciation event will take place Monday, Aug. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Panther Activity Center (PAC) at Great Bend High School and will be open to 700+ educators and staff.

in severe drought.&nbsp; Much of the western
third of the state is experiencing an expansion in extreme or exceptional
drought.&nbsp; The recent rains may help a
bit.&nbsp; The six to ten-day outlook (August 2
to 6) indicates a 80 to 90% chance of above normal temperatures and believe it
or not, a 40 to 50% chance of below normal precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (August 4
to 10) indicates more of the same.&nbsp; Last
week’s rains and cooler temperatures are likely it for a while.&nbsp; Exactly what our summer crops don’t
need.&nbsp; Today, what needs to be done and
considered for planting the 2023 wheat crop.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; First, what is the long-term outlook
for temperature and precipitation?&nbsp; August
is predicted to be hotter and drier than normal.&nbsp; The current outlook for September isn’t any

preparing to plant the 2023 wheat crop need to do?&nbsp; As always, there is no way to prepare a
complete list in a short space.

with lower wheat yields when planting wheat after wheat or if plating after a
summer row crop, if yields aren’t what was fertilized for, a soil test might be
a wise investment with high fertilizer prices.&nbsp;
Not just phosphorus (P), or potassium for some, but even a profile
Nitrate-N test around the second week of September.&nbsp; There may be adequate P, or even N, to allow
for nothing more than some starter fertilizer.&nbsp;
This is harder to get a handle on if planting after a summer row crop.

a less than ideal temperature and soil moisture outlook, producers may want to
reconsider following a summer row crop, especially grain sorghum, sunflower, or

risky but with the precipitation outlook, except with irrigation, fallow or
wheat after wheat (a shorter fallow period) will have the best chance of
success.&nbsp; There is just no way to know.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; With
the ninety-day outlook, weed control is critical as is minimizing tillage.&nbsp; Fields simply don’t have the moisture to
lose.&nbsp; This is especially true when
following a summer crop where moisture is likely to be even shorter.&nbsp; If possible, no till would be the preferable
option.&nbsp; If tillage is needed, fields
need to maintain as much surface residue as possible.&nbsp; There are several good tillage options here.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Depending
on your conditions, selecting an early maturing variety which will waste less
water on vegetative growth is a better option.&nbsp;
How early depends on the pest pressures in a field and what varieties
fit.&nbsp; 

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While
this may seem counter to accepted practices, if you have decent soil moisture
earlier than the fly free date – plant.&nbsp;
It’s critical to establish as extensive a root system as possible and
set tillers.&nbsp; There is a risk of too much
growth depleting soil water but planting into dry soil is a greater risk.&nbsp; If plating early, look for varieties with a
level of resistance to Hessian fly and barley yellow dwarf.&nbsp; And make sure to eliminate any volunteer
wheat (not a problem so far with the dry conditions) for about two weeks within
two miles of the field to prevent wheat streak mosaic virus.

the ninety-day outlook, weed control is critical as is minimizing tillage.&nbsp; Fields simply don’t have the moisture to
lose.&nbsp; This is especially true when
following a summer crop where moisture is likely to be even shorter.&nbsp; If possible, no till would be the preferable
option.&nbsp; If tillage is needed, fields
need to maintain as much surface residue as possible.&nbsp; There are several good tillage options here.·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Depending
on your conditions, selecting an early maturing variety which will waste less
water on vegetative growth is a better option.&nbsp;
How early depends on the pest pressures in a field and what varieties
fit.&nbsp; ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While
this may seem counter to accepted practices, if you have decent soil moisture
earlier than the fly free date – plant.&nbsp;
It’s critical to establish as extensive a root system as possible and
set tillers.&nbsp; There is a risk of too much
growth depleting soil water but planting into dry soil is a greater risk.&nbsp; If plating early, look for varieties with a
level of resistance to Hessian fly and barley yellow dwarf.&nbsp; And make sure to eliminate any volunteer
wheat (not a problem so far with the dry conditions) for about two weeks within
two miles of the field to prevent wheat streak mosaic virus.

The Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo has removed the old playground structure as preparation continues for the new playground construction.

The zoo stated there will be no playground for the next month or two months while the process is carried out.

The Great Bend Zoological Society and other local groups helped to fund the play area.&nbsp;

The new area will include a wheelchair accessible swing.&nbsp;

The zoo staff plans to use most of the plastic equipment from the old set for animal enclosures.

A shoe drive fundraiser is ongoing in Great Bend until Aug. 29 to raise funds for community awareness against suicide.&nbsp; 

Surviving Suicide Foundation will earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used and new shoes collected, as Funds2Orgs will issue a check for the collected shoes. 

Those dollars will benefit suicide prevention and education in learning the signs. 

Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used and new shoes at 1411 Wilson Street in Great Bend.&nbsp;

Russell City Manager Jon Quinday took to social media Thursday, July 28 to defend the decision to close the public pool Aug. 7 and the job the pool's lifeguards do. Quinday's comments came after citizens made remarks of the pool's status this summer and the early August closing date.

 I understand that the decision to close the Duke Johnson Municipal Swimming Pool on August 7, 2022, has created quite a stir with quite a few questions and some misinformation that I'd like to clarify.  Before I do, I want to thank folks on social media who posted positive comments about the lifeguards.  The lifeguards are certified and provide an invaluable service to the pool patrons.  They are not daycare providers and do not deserve public criticism on a social media platform without the opportunity to respond.  Are our lifeguards perfect?  No.  They are not robots.  These are young men and women whose primary responsibility is the safety of all patrons at the pool.  They make mistakes, and we receive calls when they do, which we address.  More on that later.

This year the pool opened on May 28th with a tentative closing date of August 14th.  The pool will close on August 7th because of staffing issues.  We won't have enough lifeguards to stay open longer.  The American Red Cross standard is one certified lifeguard per 25 people.  The City requires a minimum of seven certified lifeguards for the entire pool to be open.  The seven-person requirement is to provide one certified lifeguard at each station and one in the office.  We prefer to have nine certified lifeguards on duty, so they can take a 30-minute break after completing the rotation.  Two weeks ago, I directed the pool managers to move to a modified heat schedule so the guards could take a 15-minute break every 60 minutes.  I based this decision on high heat indexes and the lifeguards' safety. 

 There was a comment that the pool used to be open until Labor Day.  The pool has been closed in August for the past decade.  Last year the pool closed on August 9th; in 2020, it closed on August 11th, and in 2019 it closed on August 9th.  The August closing coincides with the beginning of school in Russell and when college-aged lifeguards start moving into the dorms and preparing for the fall semester. 

 The number of days the pool closed this year was another hot topic.  Please let me add some context to that discussion.  The pool opened on May 28th and will close on August 7th, 72 operating days.  As of today (July 28th), the pool has closed nine times for the following reasons:

7/26 Closed at 5 pm due to low attendance 7/25 Closed at 4 pm due to low attendance 7/23 Closed for the day due to mechanical issue – Chlorinator issue, low chlorine(Was able to open for a pool party at 7:00, chlorine level improved) 7/17 Delayed Opening due to mechanical issue – Chlorinator issue, low chlorine 6/27 Closed for the day for scheduled maintenance – water sunscreen application which is performed at least once during the pool season 6/26 Closed at 2 pm due to low attendance 6/22 Closed at 2:48 pm due to weather conditions 6/9 Closed at 4:23 pm due to low attendance 6/1 Closed for the day due to low temperatures

In summary: that is four closures for low attendance, two for weather, two for mechanical issues, and one for scheduled maintenance.  Three of the nine days were full-day closures.

 The low attendance policy is six or fewer patrons. 

The weather policy is: 1. The temperature must be 67 degrees Fahrenheit at 12:30 pm to open. 2. The pool remains open for rain-only events unless attendance drops to six or below. 3. The lifeguards clear the pool for lightning, as determined by the lightning prediction system installed at Memorial Park. Once the system gives the all-clear signal, patrons can return to the pool. The pool is closed if the storm is long-lasting or attendance drops to six or below.

One concern about the pool closings is that the person bought a season pass.  Let's put some numbers to that concern.  A single-season pass is $50.00.  Assuming the pool stays open all 72 days, the cost of attending is $0.69 per day.  Since the pool (as of today) has closed early or opened late six times and fully closed three times, that cost per day increased to $0.79.  That may rise as it rained all morning and still looks pretty overcast today.  Weather and other unforeseen events are reasons placed on the pool pass application as to why the pool may close.  Whether a person wishes to purchase a season pass to save money or pay the daily $2.00 entry fee is an economic decision that is out of my control.  It's similar to the decision I faced as a young kid.  Do I pay for a season ski pass for a lift ticket each time I go skiing?  Some days the snow is not good, so I stay home.  Some days the mountain is closed due to weather.  I digress, back to the concerns raised on social media. 

 The installation of the two new slides and other water features at the pool was a decision to replace old worn-out equipment.  The manufacturer's safety recommendations do not allow persons under forty-eight inches to ride the slide, no more than one person at a time, and no one at the slide's base to "catch" those coming down the slide.  We would be remiss to ignore the safety recommendation of the manufacturer – especially when young children are involved.  Contrary to some suggestions, the lifeguards are not at the base of the slides to "catch" people.  The lifeguards are present to prevent and respond to water emergencies.

Lifeguards are not allowed to have cell phones while at their duty station.  Phones are left in the office where lifeguards can access and use their phones during breaks.  Is the office an ideal area for the lifeguards to take a break?  No., but it gets them out of the sun.  Is it difficult to tell who in the office is on break and who is not?  Yes.  It's a small area.  We can and will work on a better break area where the lifeguards can cool off and unwind for their short breaks. 

 Finally, I want to close with two items: About our lifeguards and how to contact me if you have questions or concerns.

First, as I said previously, our lifeguards provide an invaluable service monitoring patron activity to prevent and respond to water emergencies.  Yes, they will blow the whistle if you run around the pool, and no one wants you to slip and hurt yourself.  Our lifeguards are certified through the American Red Cross.  Lifeguards must be at least 15 years old and pass a pre-course swimming skills test before taking the lifeguarding courses.  The skills test is a 300-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke, a 2-minute tread using legs only, and the ability to retrieve a 10- pound dive weight from 7 feet deep, surface, and swim twenty yards with the weight, using legs only and exit the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds.

Members of the next generation of flour millers and commodity buyers from operations in Morocco, Algeria, Egypt and Oman discussed the science behind the hard red winter (HRW) wheat crop as part of a 12-day tour to Idaho, Kansas and North Dakota.&nbsp;

The team, organized by U.S. Wheat Associates (USW), was comprised of future industry decision-makers. Some attendees were students and had part-time jobs in their family’s flour mills to prepare them to take over from their parents. USW used this opportunity to introduce information about the U.S. grain marketing system at an early stage in the careers of these young professionals and build strong relationships to lay the foundation for future opportunities like potential combination cargos.&nbsp;

“These young generation millers represent their family businesses and are exposed to the U.S. grain marketing system at a very early age,” said Tarik Gahi, milling and baking technologist in the USW office in Casablanca, Morocco, who accompanied the team. “Visits to different states on this trip were an opportunity to introduce different classes of U.S. wheat and learn about efforts implemented by organizations and facilities to produce the best quality wheat.”

Overall, the Middle East/North African region imports primarily HRW wheat in addition to soft white (SW) and soft red winter (SRW) wheat. However, the region is composed of more than 30 countries, meaning there is a wide variation in the sophistication of local flour milling operations and wheat importation.

Egypt is the world’s largest wheat importer due to high per capita consumption, driven by government flour and bread subsidies. While the country imports from multiple origins, the largest market share is traditionally given to Black Sea suppliers.&nbsp;

In the MAGHREB countries (Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia), imports depend heavily on domestic wheat production as well as crop quality from geographically closer suppliers. As a result, U.S. wheat exports to these countries fluctuate greatly from year to year, although these countries are consistent buyers of U.S. durum.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Taking advantage of market opportunities in the Middle East/North African region requires a long-term commitment to building relationships within the industries of individual markets, like the up-and-coming leaders of the young millers team. As part of this work, USW organizes in-person tours to the United States to provide firsthand insights into the current year’s wheat harvest. Kansas Wheat staff regularly participates in these programs to provide personalized information to each market and receive feedback directly from customers.&nbsp;

From July 17 to July 20, the team spent time in Kansas learning about HRW production, visiting research facilities and meeting with leading wheat researchers. At the USDA Center for Grain and Animal Health Research, the team discussed how USDA scientists in the Hard Winter Wheat Genetics Unit focus on different diseases that affect the wheat plant, including leaf rust, stem rust or Fusarium Head Blight. They also discussed how both basic and applied research help ensure a high-quality U.S. grain supply by evaluating the end-use of breeding lines through biochemical and physical characterization.&nbsp;

The team toured the Grain Science Complex on the north campus of Kansas State University, including the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center, IGP Institute and Hal Ross Flour Mill. Participants received an overview of how U.S. wheat classes are graded, including a hands-on grading practicum. The team also visited Research Productions Company in Salina, which provides innovative ideas, services and products for the milling and baking industries.&nbsp;

The team left with a greater understanding of the science behind HRW development in Kansas and the commitment of U.S. wheat producers to continue to grow the world’s most reliable supply of high-quality wheat. Both lessons will stick with these young leaders throughout their burgeoning careers and contribute to future sales of U.S. wheat.&nbsp;

Free sports physicals will be available for Great Bend Middle School &amp; Great Bend High School student-athletes again this year thanks to the generosity and partnership of local healthcare providers.

The walk-in event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 7 a.m. – 10 a.m. in the GBHS Commons Area. Paperwork can be picked up in advance or will also be available at the door.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association requires an annual physical for any student grades 7-12 who wishes to participate in interschool athletics, spirit, or spirit competition groups in the 2022-2023 school year. A primary care physician can also complete the physical, but the KSHSAA form must be on file with the student’s school before they are allowed to practice with an athletic team.

“Doctors in our community have been incredibly generous over the years, giving their time to provide free athletic physicals for our students,” said Andrea Bauer, public information director for USD 428. “This is a great convenience and service to our students and families that we’re excited to see resume this year.”

August signals the beginning of another school year. Kids of all ages will be learning new skills in the classroom. My hope is that you will find something that you want to learn more about and sign up for a class or two. I have loved my years in Extension because it has encouraged me to be a life-long learner. When I prepare to teach others in a workshop setting, I always find that the time I spend researching the subject teaches me as much as the participants.

Consider signing up for the fermentation workshop I am offering in Great Bend on August 29th. Participants will learn how to make Kimchi which is a tasty Korean condiment. There is a registration fee of $25 that covers the ingredients and equipment needed to ferment a quart of Kimchi.

It is also time to think about registering for the Stay Strong Stay Healthy workshop that begins in September. I will be leading this popular workshop which focuses on improving strength, flexibility, and balance. A $20 registration fee will hold a spot for you and class size is limited. Classes run from September 29th through November 29th, from 10 – 11 AM at the Great Bend Activity Center.

Before I close today, I want to extend a warm welcome to our newest team member, Monique Koerner. Monique is bringing her professional experience to the Cottonwood District as the Family and Community Wellness agent in the Hays office.

Early in August the Cottonwood District Horticulture position will open for applicants and later in the fall the 4-H and youth development position in the Hays office will be filled. Watch for these announcements in the weeks ahead and encourage people you may know who have the qualifications to apply.

Exciting times lie ahead in the Cottonwood District. I hope you will be part of the life-long learning that is happening!

Barton Community College Institutional Research Coordinator Jose
Palacios presented information to the college’s board of trustees this week of
the potential population and job increases coming to Kansas. 
Pandemic restrictions led Americans to move to rural states due to the increase
of remote work. Inflation is also creating a housing issue. Construction has
slowed down, causing Americans to move further into the Midwest because of
lower home prices. Palacios presented data showing Kansas ranked third in the United States in low cost of living. 
Palacios also highlighted Panasonic, Mythical Games and Garmin will be adding
thousands of jobs over the next few years to the Kansas City area that will
need trained employees. 
"This presents Barton with a unique opportunity because these jobs are highly-skilled and technical jobs, like cyber security, IT and software engineers," said Palacios. "Businesses are coming. Usually when businesses come, families come and it opens an opportunity for education and training for those new jobs." 
Barton Board of Trustees Chair Mike Johnson said the boom in jobs, even hours
away, could benefit Barton. 
"It's a different perspective, being three hours away, but with the idea of the number of jobs going to be needed and our online capabilities...Barton could be in position to capture some student head count," said Johnson. 
Kansas City will be a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Opportunities from
hosting the World Cup could bring Fortune 500 companies to open new locations

Prevention is often cost effective and beneficial when compared to reaction. Juvenile Services for the 20th Judicial District is playing its part with a pair of primary prevention programs aimed at keeping area youth on the right line toward success. The All Stars program has been implemented in most school districts in Barton County, and the Youth Crew program gives students grades 6-12 an opportunity to get involved in their communities.

The goal of All Stars is to prevent the use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other illicit substances. It was implemented as a pilot program at Riley Elementary in Great Bend. Based on success there, Juvenile Services Director Marissa Woodmansee pushed to have it incorporated in all elementary schools in USD 428. It has since been implemented in USD 431 Hoisington, USD 112 Wilson-Central Plains, and Holy Family school in Great Bend. Woodmansee was recently contacted by USD 355 about implementing the program in Ellinwood.

"All-Stars is an evidence-based program that looks at delaying the onset of substance misuse, bullying, and promiscuity," Woodmansee said. "It enhances bonding with that trusted adult. My favorite part is it starts emphasizing forward thinking for your future. What do you want for your future? And what does substance misuse look like to deter your future should something like that cross your path?"

A celebration is held once sixth graders complete the All Stars program. The students write commitment letters and read them to their families as part of owning up to personal responsibility. Some students have even presented their letters on the radio and at Barton County Commission meetings.

All Stars is a jumping off point for Youth Crew, which is open to all students grades 6-12 who wish to assume a leadership role and be active in their communities. The program started in May 2021, and Tyler Morton was hired as prevention specialist in February 2022 as part of a 10-year Drug Free Communities grant.

"The number of kids we've had has consistently been 14-20," Woodmansee said. "With Tyler being hired in February of this year, we have the momentum and it's like okay, let's break the barrier for some of these other communities and let's go to them. I'm excited. That's what we're doing."

Targeted areas for Barton County youth involve alcohol and marijuana misuse. The county has seen a drop in use over the past few years, but local rates remain higher than state rates. Woodmansee sees room for improvement.

"We would like to be able to contribute that to the programming we are implementing," she said. "This data is collected every year in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12. We'll be able to continue to identify that. Even then, maybe there will be a new trend identified with this year's data collection. I say that because, a couple of kids that are in our Youth Crew, their concern right now is vaping in the school setting. Even though that's not necessarily one of our targeted areas with that grant, specifically, it is something we continue to address with them to be able to have a voice within their community and with those school professionals about how to address it."

One Youth Crew participant recently had the opportunity to attend a national seminar in Florida. She will soon have the opportunity to share her experience with the Barton County Commission. Woodmansee hopes that is just a start to the program.

"There's just going to be more leadership opportunities for these kids going forward," she said. "I think that's something unique that maybe hasn't been afforded in years past."

The rainy weather in late May resulted in the postponement of Mental Health Awareness Day activities, which have been rescheduled for 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2 at downtown Great Bend's Jack Kilby Square, 1400 Main.

“We were disappointed that our special day was rained out on May 24 but are thankful we could reschedule,” said Julie Kramp, executive director of The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation. “We will share information about the many local resources available, while making connections that can lead to better mental health in our community.”

One of The Center’s display booths will focus on #Zero Reasons Why, the local teen-led, suicide-prevention program. In a neighboring booth, local therapists will share information and answer questions.

Many of The Center’s community partners will offer fun events and educational opportunities for all ages at their booths. Some will serve food and others will showcase their displays and provide handouts.

“Arts and crafts and kids’ games also are on the agenda,” Kramp commented. “This truly is an opportunity to engage with one another at all levels.”

There is no charge for entities that want to set up a booth. Kramp noted that The Center’s staff deserves even more credit for following through on their plans after the event had to be postponed.&nbsp;

“They take The Center’s sponsorship of this popular annual event very seriously,” Kramp explained. “They know how important mental-health information is to our whole community and are eager to help educate the public about it.”

Tickets for the Barton Foundation’s 43rd Annual Big Benefit Auction, themed “Boots and Brews,” are available through Aug. 12. The auction will take place on Aug. 27.

Tickets are $50 each or $400 per table of eight. Seating is limited and no tickets will be sold at the door, so those interested are encouraged to reserve their tickets early. Doors open at 6 p.m. at the Great Bend Columbus Club with complimentary beer and food available until 8 p.m.
