Duane Reif grew up on a farm in northeast Barton County and has spent
his entire life in the county. After 30 years as a branch manager for a grain
company, Reif recently retired and is now focused on earning a seat on the Barton
County Commission. 

Reif is one of four candidates that are running for the
District 1 position on the commission, and he felt communication is key for
good leadership. "I'm very diverse," said Reif. "The reason I say that, as far as communication is concerned, I grew up and spent a lot of time in the northeast part of Barton County. I really feel like I know the people. I've heard their concerns and visited with them. Communication is really not a problem. I feel like I have a head start." 
Reif gave his comments at the candidate forum last week hosted by the League of
Women Voters Great Bend – Barton County.

Reif is currently on the Hoisington
City Council and was the co-founder of the Kans For Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation.
When asked about taxation, Reif encouraged everyone to think about the benefits
before considering cuts. 
"We don't want to lose any of these great benefits," said Reif. "That's what brings people into this community. The parks, zoo, swimming pools. Cheyenne Bottoms brings an awful amount of revenue into this community. Roads that take us to and from anywhere you want to go. Emergency services. Probably 90% of you in Barton County can call 9-1-1 and there will be someone at your door in probably five minutes." 
Jeffery Donecker, Matthew Gerritzen and Linda Moeder are also running for the

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (7/28)

Thousands of fans and spectators have watched basketball games and
graduations over the years from the wooden bleachers on the second level of the
Kirkman Center at Barton Community College. Sometime around Christmas of this
year, new plastic-material bleachers will replace the wooden bleachers on the west,
north and south sides of the upper level of the gym. 
Barton Athletic Director Trevor Rolfs said his staff was working on the bleacher
replacement before the COVID-19 pandemic. With all the delays on construction
and materials, the project will finally take place this winter. 
"We're so excited we're going to make things more compliant and appeasing to our fans," said Rolfs. "We feel like the main gym is kind of the front door to our college. It will be ADA accessible. We're excited about how much good is going to come of this." The total project will cost just over $200,000. The Kirkman Endowment through the Barton Community College Foundation
contributed $100,000 for the bleacher replacement. While the Foundation cannot
fund athletic projects, the gym is used for graduations, community events and
other college functions. 
"We couldn't have done this project without the generosity from a lot of people, particularly the Larry and Kathy Schugart family," said Rolfs. "Certainly, the recent contribution from the Barton Community College Foundation was huge in getting us to the finish line and making this thing become a reality." 
Rolfs said the color for the new bleachers will be black and the west side will
have seatbacks. The bleachers will include railings throughout to assist spectators up and down.

SOPA Inc. will install the bleachers during the college's Christmas break and be finished before the first home basketball game in January 2023.

RUSSELL COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 1:30p.m. Thursday in Russell.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Ford F150 driven by Ray E. Bosch, 72, Gorham, was northbound on 176th Street three and one half miles south of Interstate 70.

The pickup struck the drivers side of a 2002 Ford F150 driven by Sheila K.&nbsp;Bosch, 69, Gorham, who was northbound and attempted to make a U-turn at the intersection of&nbsp;176th Street and Four Corners Road.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sheila Bosch was airlifted to Wichita hospital. EMS transported Ray Bosch to Hays Medical Center..&nbsp; Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Hi! My name is Monique Koerner. I’m the new Family and Community Wellness Extension Agent in the Cottonwood Extension District. I’m passionate about the community of Hays and the families and children that live here!

Hays is my hometown and I graduated from Hays High School and Fort Hays State University. Most recently I graduated from Fort Hays State University in 2019 with a Masters in Professional Studies with an emphasis in Public Health Administration. Before being hired as an extension agent, I worked for Early Childhood Connections. I was a home visitor for Early Head Start and Parents as Teachers.

My family consists of my husband, Lance, five children ranging in age from 25-15, and two dogs. A long-haired Chihuahua named Bella, and a yellow lab named Phiobe, round out the family.

Advocating for and supporting families who breastfeed is also a passion of mine. I have been a La Leche League Leader for almost 23 years and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) for 11 years.

I’m excited to begin my new position with K-State. I plan on being at the Backpack for Kids event on Aug 4, at the Presbyterian Church from 7am-6pm, Go Truck Go on Sept 22, at Early Childhood Connections 5-7pm, and have started planning the annual Family Dinner Night make and take pizza event the last Monday in September. Please come out and say “hi”! I look forward to seeing old friends and acquaintances as well as making new ones.

Cottonwood Extension welcomes new agent, Monique Koerner

Great Bend Public Lands Director Scott Keeler said for the first time in
his 28 years working with the City of Great Bend, there have been no baseball
or softball tournaments in town this summer canceled due to rain. 
This summer has marked the first “tournament season” with artificial turf at
the Great Bend Sports Complex.

Keeler said there were reservations at first for
the $1.37 million turf project that was completed last winter, but the learning
experience has been rewarding this summer. "From other teams, surrounding communities and local teams, just everyone I talked to...it's been all positive," said Keeler. "They said it played better and they didn't have the dirt blowing in their face." 
The upgrades placed turf on the infields of the five ballfields at the complex
while leaving natural grass in the outfields. Keeler said the turf
installation has allowed the city to water the outfields multiple times a day
because there is no more worry of getting the infields too wet. Because of this, the condition of the grass throughout the hot summers should improve. 
The city, USD 428 and Great Bend Recreation Commission divvied up the cost of
the turf project. The Rec Commission is handling annual maintenance and paid
$6,750 this year for Hellas Construction to perform professional sweep cleaning
services.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

First time in a long time, no GB tournaments canceled due to rain

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce staff, ambassadors, and community joined the First Congregational United Church of Christ staff and congregation for a coffee and ribbon cutting to celebrate the church’s 150th&nbsp;Anniversary in Great Bend.

Over its 150 years, the church has served this community. This service has changed according to it’s membership and what can be helped with those needs. This church is welcoming and open to all.

The only paid staff are the minister and organist, with the remainder of those serving the church being volunteers. The congregation is small in numbers and tries to meet the needs of the congregation. The church has historically been a church that welcomes all, no matter where they are on life’s journey.

In August of 1872, a dedicated group of early Kansas settlers resolved to establish a new church in the newly formed town called Great Bend, Kansas. That dedicated group became the First Congregational United Church of Christ. On Sunday, August 7, the church will celebrate its 150th year with a special worship service at 11 am and an Anniversary service at 2 pm. Following the 2 pm service, the church will hold a reception in the Fellowship Hall. They anticipate former ministers, members, and friends of the church will attend. The pandemic created a need to have services on Zoom. The church has continued to do so to further reach its congregation. Contact Pastor Mike Munz to receive information to watch on Zoom.

As predicted, voters are heading to the polls for the 2022 primaries. Given many contested races around the area and the state, and with the constitutional amendment regarding abortion being decided in the primary, election officials are seeing increased participation over previous elections. 

"I just checked, and we've had 538 vote here in the office so far," Barton County Clerk Bev Schmeidler said Wednesday morning. "We did over 100 (Tuesday), just the one day. The Secretary of State said statewide, the numbers are up over the 2018 gubernatorial election year. It has seemed busier. We've mailed a lot more ballots."

Across the state, the Secretary of State's office reported that 65,526 advance ballots had been cast in person as of 8 a.m. Monday morning. That is more than three times the number of votes cast by this time in the 2018 election cycle. More than 111,000 advance ballots had been mailed as of Monday morning, compared to just over 47,000 ballots in 2018. The 29,210 returned ballots are nearly double the 2018 total at this time.

Early voting in Barton County continues at the clerk's office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday. The office will have special hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, July 30. Early voting ends at noon on Monday, Aug. 1.

Barton County Clerk's Office open for voting this Saturday

On Thursday, July 28 at about 1:30 a.m., a Barton County Sheriff's Office deputy sheriff stopped a blue 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis for a traffic infraction in the 1600 block of K-96 Highway. 

Upon approaching the vehicle, deputies observed what appeared to be a bag of white crystalline substance laying on the back seat of the vehicle. The deputies field-tested the substance which indicated it was methamphetamine. 

Further investigation located a container in the front seat area of the vehicle which contained more suspected methamphetamine. The three occupants of the vehicle were placed under arrest and transported the Barton County Jail without incident.

Arrested at the scene, was the driver, Clayton Hines, age 40 of Great Bend; Earl Davis, age 46 of Great Bend and Ralph Tuey Jr., age 49 also of Great Bend. 

All three were booked on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. Tuey was booked on an additional failure to appear warrant from the City of Great Bend.&nbsp;

One traffic stop, three drug arrests in Great Bend

Linda Moeder has been attending the Barton County Commission meetings
since March and hopes to take a seat on the commission next January. Moeder is
one of four candidates in the District 1 race for the commission. 

Moeder and
her husband moved to Beaver 23 years ago and owned Mo’s Place Grill &amp; Brew
Pub for 15 years. &nbsp;"Taxes are necessary to provide needed services, but it's not the government's job to fix all the problems," said Moeder. "County commissioners should have a focus on the government's role versus that of private business. I believe limited government is better. We need good management of tax resources to maximize the benefit for all the county residents." 
Moeder participated in the candidate forum last week hosted by the League of
Women Voters Great Bend – Barton County. When asked about inflation, Moeder
acknowledged there is not much the county can do to battle the current inflation
problem. 
"I believe the best thing the county commissioners can do is keep spending under control," said Moeder. "For instance, the sheriff's office has purchased fuel at a contracted price, and the county treasurer is not including envelopes for return payment. These are small things but they add up to big savings. They should be encouraged." 
Duane Reif, Jeffery Donecker and Matthew Gerritzen are also running for the
District 1 position. Eagle Radio has or will feature each candidate this week.

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (7/27)

By COLE REIF Great Bend Post Communities Organizing to Promote Equity, known as COPE, formed in 20
counties across Kansas this year to identify and reduce barriers to health and
wellbeing for all residents. Barton County is one of the 20 counties that
formed the COPE group. COPE Lead Callie Miller said one social deterrent that
is underserved in the community is access to everyday things. 
"The underserved community is already struggling," said Miller. "We want to do things that can help them have one less thing on their plate. We've learned that, with the underserved community, sometimes hygiene or things that those without financial issues take for granted, like haircuts for their kids." 
To help those underserved, COPE has organized free back-to-school haircuts for
children 17 years old and under on Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Lox Salon and Furbs Hair Studio in Great Bend and 5th Street Hair
Studio in Ellinwood are participating. 
"We got lucky and three businesses were extremely willing to participate in the event because of who it served," said Miller. "They were able to finagle their schedules to make it work." 
The free haircuts will be offered on a first come first serve basis and are for
walk-ins only. COPE will offer prizes for the children while they wait for
their haircuts and drinks will be available as they leave.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

 </figure>By COLE REIF Great Bend Post Communities Organizing to Promote Equity, known as COPE, formed in 20
counties across Kansas this year to identify and reduce barriers to health and
wellbeing for all residents. Barton County is one of the 20 counties that
formed the COPE group. COPE Lead Callie Miller said one social deterrent that
is underserved in the community is access to everyday things. 
"The underserved community is already struggling," said Miller. "We want to do things that can help them have one less thing on their plate. We've learned that, with the underserved community, sometimes hygiene or things that those without financial issues take for granted, like haircuts for their kids." 
To help those underserved, COPE has organized free back-to-school haircuts for
children 17 years old and under on Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Lox Salon and Furbs Hair Studio in Great Bend and 5th Street Hair
Studio in Ellinwood are participating. 
"We got lucky and three businesses were extremely willing to participate in the event because of who it served," said Miller. "They were able to finagle their schedules to make it work." 
The free haircuts will be offered on a first come first serve basis and are for
walk-ins only. COPE will offer prizes for the children while they wait for

Great Bend Chamber coffee hour & ribbon cutting (7/28)

Last year, Holy Family School in Great Bend, along with two other
private schools, were awarded an $824,000 grant from the United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA) to deliver high-quality distant learning
services in the future. 
The bulk of the grant is going towards Holy Family and will provide an upgrade
to the school’s internet infrastructure and 75", interactive, touchscreen
panels for each classroom. 
Holy Family Principal Debbie Hagans said the goal is to have the west wing of the
school upgraded within the next month or two and then the rest of the
classrooms next spring. 
"The Clear Touch screens are ordered and are being shipped," said Hagans. "We did need upgrades to our internet in the building to make sure all students had internet access without dropping. It's going to be very good." 
Along with Holy Family, St. Joseph Catholic School in Ellinwood and Sacred
Heart School in Ness City received part of the grant.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

If you plan to feed out sorghums, there are several things to consider before feeding. Below, we talk about the various ways and what level of concern you should have. When in doubt, test before feeding.&nbsp;

Pasture. Grazing sorghum is considered to be the most dangerous option when HCN potential is a concern; however, proper management can reduce risk. Figure 6 shows a calf grazing sorghum-sudangrass that is more than 18 inches tall and shows no stress from frost or extreme drought, both conditions that could increase HCN potential. Residues from grain sorghum can be safely grazed after grain harvest, if the remaining plant is totally dead after a frost, or a week has passed since the frost occurred. Grain sorghum can have small tillers that can be high in HCN until after a killing frost.&nbsp;

Hay. It is recommended to use forage sorghum as hay when HCN potential is not a concern; plants are greater than 18 to 24 inches tall, and not drought or cold stressed. Drying does not eliminate risk. If in doubt about the degree of stress that might lead to elevated dhurrin in hay, collect a representative sample and test for HCN potential.&nbsp;

Silage. Silage is considered one of the safest options when feeding sorghum forage.&nbsp;

Green Chop. Use of green chop reduces HCN potential as compared to grazing but is not considered as safe as feeding silage.&nbsp;

If HCN is a concern, several steps can be taken to reduce the potential of cyanide toxicity. These steps include:&nbsp;

If you suspect HCN poisoning in even one animal, call your local veterinarian immediately and remove the rest of the livestock from the feed. Accurate diagnosis of clinical signs and removal from feed is important in these cases. Your veterinarian may collect samples of forage, rumen contents, or blood to help confirm a diagnosis.&nbsp;

Overall, sorghum has many beneficial properties. If proper management occurs, sorghum can be a safe and beneficial forage crop. Soon, a new hybrid will be on the market that is dhurrin-free. This hybrid will not release HCN because there is no accumulation of dhurrin. This new hybrid will be a great option for removing the fear of cyanide toxicity.&nbsp;
