Acclaimed composer, virtuoso pianist and inspirational speaker Eric Genuis will be performing a sweep of concerts through central and western Kansas from Sept. 20 to 22.

Genuis will be performing Concerts of Hope for prisoners at Ellsworth and Norton Correctional Facilities. He will be performing for students at Sacred Heart Junior and Senior High School in Salina as well as at Thomas More Prep-Marian Junior and Senior High Schools and Holy Family Elementary School in Hays. Parents are encouraged to attend the school concerts as Genuis talks to the students in a humorous manner about the music they listen to and how to enjoy the classical genre.

Two public concerts will be performed. The first will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 at Marymount Properties, 2030 E. Iron, Salina. The second will be held at 7 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine, Hays.

Genuis, along with world-class violinist, a cello player and vocalist, perform all original music that gives rise to a unique musical experience with universal appeal. Genuis shares his gift of music with what he calls, “the forgotten,” prisoners, memory care facilities and PTSD veterans.

“What a pleasure to listen to not only a world class pianist and composer, but an artist whose music translates beyond its genre to lift the audience to belief and hope in the power of the human spirit, said actor Jim Caviezel. “I have been honored to be present at several of Eric’s concerts, every time with a unique audience nuance. Those present felt the power of Eric’s music, and his words clearly elevated people.

There will be a freewill offering at Genuis’ public concerts to help pay his travel expenses and to allow him to continue to perform his Concerts of Hope, which is a 503(c)3 organization.

Composer, pianist, inspirational speaker to perform western Kan. concerts

By GLENN BRUNKOW Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher Tuesday I was hauling hay; it was my fifth or sixth load of the day, and I had been hauling hay for the better part of a week. It was probably all too routine. I was making the left-hand turn off of the highway onto the county road. I looked back in my rearview mirror and did not see anyone before I started to turn. That was when I saw the Subaru had decided to pass me at that very point. Thankfully, nothing more happened than the driver squealing their brakes and shaking their fist at me, but it could have been much worse. Over the past couple of months, I have had a couple of friends who have had worse experiences sharing the highways with other motorists. Thankfully, none of them were seriously hurt, but the damage to farm equipment was not something they had planned to deal with, I am sure. Let me be the first to say I was not without fault. Upon inspection, I learned my left-turn signal was not working. However, if I remember my driver’s ed classes right, it is not permissible to pass on a double yellow line or at an intersection. Along with that, following so close to a trailer that the driver in front of you cannot see you is not good either. My point is all drivers need to share the road, and those roads are starting to get even more crowded with slow moving ag equipment as harvest starts. As ag producers we need to make sure our equipment has working lights and turn signals. We need to be aware of who is around us on the roads and have a plan of action that assumes other drivers will not do the right thing. If at all possible, move equipment at times when the road is less crowded. If you are driving during harvest, please, give the equipment plenty of room. Stay far enough back to see the rearview mirrors of the vehicle ahead of you because that will mean they can also see you. Farm equipment moves slowly so take that into account as you approach. You will close the gap much faster than you may realize. Please, never pass near an intersection, many times our turn signals don’t work. Yes, farm equipment will slow your drive down, again, please take a deep breath. Don’t be in such a rush that you pass in a bad place or at the wrong time. That farmer is growing the food you are rushing home to put on your table. I got lucky, and I am using that fortunate moment as a reminder to be more vigilant when I am on the road. It only takes a second, a blink for things to go bad. Take the time to slow down, make the right decisions and be courteous. We are all in this together, we have to share the same road, let’s all be safe and make sure we make it home.

Vilsack Previews Climate&nbsp;Grant Funding at Farm Progress Show USDA Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced three recipients for USDA’s Partnerships for Climate Smart Commodities Program at the Farm Progress show in Iowa this week. Among the awardees were projects based on Iowa, Missouri and South Dakota. The rest of the awards will be announced on September 13. Thompson Outlines Farm Bill Timeline He'd Pursue as House Ag Chairman House Agriculture Committee Republican leader Rep. Glenn "GT" Thompson spoke this week at the Farm Progress Show in Iowa, highlighting his priority areas if Republicans take over the House and he becomes committee chairman. This includes starting farm bill hearings as early as January and the hope to have a funding allocation from the Budget Committee by the summer. Ellis County fire crews responded to a pair of grass fires
this week.

The first fire was reported just before 6 p.m. Tuesday near Saline
River Road and Cathedral Avenue.

According to Ellis County Assistant Fire Chief Lyle Pantle, when crews arrived on scene they found approximately 500-yard-long fire line
and burnt pasture. Crews were able to get the fire under control just before 8
p.m. and stayed on scene mopping up and returned to the station at
approximately 8:40 p.m.

Pantle said approximately 50 acres of pasture and open land
were burned in the fire. 

At approximately 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, Company 5 was called to
the 2400 block of East Seventh Street for a grass fire.

Pantle said the grass fire spread to a tree row and wood
pile. Crews put out the fire and returned to the station at approximately 4:10
p.m. 

A cause of the fire could not be determined.

The Hays area is more than 7 inches inches behind average precipitation year to date, according to the K-State Research Center in Hays.

Barton's Fine and Performing Arts Department will join forces with the Shafer Art Gallery to present the Faculty Recital &amp; Exhibition Sept. 15 at 4:30 p.m. in the Shafer Gallery. Admission is free.

Instructor of Dance &amp; Fine and Performing Arts Coordinator Danika Bielek said the show is special because it's a collaborative event. “Many of Barton's performing art and visual art faculty from multiple campuses have teamed up to present their work for the public and the setting of the Gallery is so lovely and inspiring,” she said. “Our college’s artistic faculty are respected as fine instructors. We wanted to highlight how they are also accomplished artists and performers as well.” The event will feature veteran as well as newly hired fine and performing arts instructors.

Performers include Keyboard Instructor Dr. Alejandro Avila, Director of Choral Activities Dr. Eric Foley, Adjunct Music Instructor Colvin Hoosier, Adjunct Music Instructor Grant Mathews, Director of Instrumental Activities Jamie Minneman, Director of Theatrical Activities Dan Williams, and Bielek.

Artists on display will include Art Instructor Bill Forst, Art Instructor Aimee Hanson, Adjunct Instructor of Drawing &amp; Painting Magdalene Jacobson, Art Instructor Philip, and Williams. Bielek said many of the pieces in the recital will include multiple faculty members supporting each other. “Whether in movement, music or visual art, the Faculty Recital and Exhibition will represent a harmonious start to the fall semester,” she said. Haley Gleason, advanced practice registered nurse, is eager to share information about the long list of women’s healthcare services at Pawnee Valley Medical Associates (PVMA) during the annual Women’s Expo.

The event is set for 3:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27 at the Great Bend Events Center, 3111 10th. Admission is free.

“We will talk about a variety of topics at our Expo booth and be happy to answer visitors’ questions,” Gleason said.

Women’s health services include: gynecological care; birth control; 3-D mammograms; pelvic pain; testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases; help with urinary incontinence; and care for mental-health issues, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

“We are happy to talk about these issues and answer questions,” Gleason said. “You can count on friendly faces and valuable information at our booth.”

Gleason sees patients at the PVMA clinic, 713 11th in Larned; it is part of Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, 923 Carroll.

“While I specialize in family medicine, I do have a comprehensive background in women’s healthcare,” she commented. “I love to care for women of all ages.”

Pawnee Valley to share healthcare services at Women’s Expo

Wheatland Electric Cooperative, Inc. announced that its Sharing Success Fund, managed by the Scott Community Foundation, has awarded a $1,000 grant to Great Bend Alive.

Great Bend Alive, Inc. is a non-profit offshoot of Great Bend Economic Development, created to bring more quality-of-life amenities to downtown Great Bend. One of the groups more popular events is the Friday night entertainment district on Forest Avenue which takes place on the final Friday of each month April through November.

The Scott Community Foundation began formally accepting applications for grants from the Wheatland Electric Sharing Success Fund from community-based organizations on December 1, 2012. Wheatland Electric and CoBank have each contributed $10,000 again this year to the fund. The program will continue to run until the funds are exhausted. Since 2012, the Sharing Success Fund has made $125,000 available to community-based organizations and projects across Wheatland’s service territory.

Great Bend mural project receives $1,000 grant from Wheatland Electric

Pavement surface improvements to a section of K-96 Highway in Great Bend
will take place next spring. 
The Great Bend City Council approved a $573,578 bid Tuesday night for a mill
and overlay of K-96, between 10th Street and 24th Street. 
Assistant City Engineer Hitha Kadiyala told the council the
majority of the project is funded by the state through the City Connecting Link
Improvement Program (CCLIP). "Venture Corporation was the only bid we received for $573,578," said Kadiyala. "This grant project is 90% state funded and 10% city funded." 
The city’s 10% portion of the project came out to $57,357.80. Funding will come
from the Kansas Department of Transportation Grants Fund which if funded by the
federal fund exchange program with the state.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

As you drive around the county, you might notice that many trees are look like we are already in fall though summer is still here. Leaves of area Elm Trees have turned brown, and some may be falling off, giving them a sickly appearance. In many cases, the reason for this is, Elm Leaf Beetles feasting on their leaves. Elm Leaf Beetles are a yearly concern when the second generation hatches about Mid-July. This year is no exception.&nbsp;

Elm Leaf Beetles are a yearly nuisance pest that feed on Elm leaves. The small Green and yellow striped adults can be troublesome in homes during the fall and spring as they overwinter in houses. Adult Beetles become active when the new leaves on Elms emerge in the spring. They feed on the new foliage and the females lay their eggs in early May. Larva emerge and start feeding on the underside of leaves for two to three weeks, and then drop to the ground to pupate on the soil surface, or stay in the tree to pupate in the cracks of the bark. Most of the time this first generation goes unnoticed because of small numbers, and the tree producing new foliage to replace what leaves had been lost.&nbsp;

The second generation is where most of the damage is observed. The massive populations of beetles feeding on the leaves are what give the tree a burnt or brown appearance. This is when most people become alarmed and may notice the beetles all over their trees, or the yellow or yellow brown pupae in the cracks of the tree. Most of the time, although surprising to find, and disconcerting to see your tree looking brown early in the season, the trees is still alive and will leaf out just fine the following season.&nbsp;

Treatment for the beetles is usually not recommended. Most large healthy trees can withstand late season defoliation, and if anyone in the area also has beetles, then they are likely to come back to your tree. If you do want to treat, time and chemical sprays to coincide with egg hatch in either mid-May for the first generation, or early to mid-July for the second generation. Often a single application made to control the first generation is all that is required. There are several effective sprays on the market labeled for use in the control of Elm Beetles. Please make sure that you follow all directions on the container. &nbsp;

The city has plans to fog on the following dates: Sept. 8, Sept. 15, Sept. 22 and Sept. 29. Spraying will start at 8 p.m. and finish by midnight. 

The public is encouraged to take precautions to limit exposure to themselves, especially those with medical issues, and pets.

Great Bend adds four more dates for mosquito spraying

She's been doing the work, now she has the official title. In May of this year, Jennifer Hamby was named the Barton County Landfill Interim Director. At Wednesday's commission meeting, she was formally named director. During the weekly meeting, the commission also passed on a county-wide burn ban due to recent rains. County Emergency Risk Manager Amy Miller presented on the burn ban.

"I talked with Luke McCormick, fire chief of Great Bend yesterday," she said. "He said the fire chiefs would like to withdraw their request for a resolution at this time. Great Bend had not quite two inches of rain Thursday night, and that extended out to a large portion of the county. He'd spoken, from what I understood, with other fire chiefs. They said they'd be willing to work with putting it off and hopefully receiving more rain this weekend."

Commissioner Kirby Krier warned that much of the county remains very dry. Forecasts for the area indicate a 20-percent chance of rain Friday, increasing to a 40-percent chance Saturday. High temperatures are expected to dip into the mid-70s by Sunday.

The commission voted to approve Hamby as Barton County Landfill director. Hamby has been employed at the landfill since 2013, and was named interim director after Phil Hathcock moved out of state after serving as director for the previous eight years. Hamby thanked the commission for the opportunity.

"I really appreciate the opportunity to serve in this role," she said. "I look forward to working with you guys and the community to make the best possible decisions for the future of that landfill. I'm really excited."  

Hamby received her Manager of Landfill Operations certification through the Solid Waste Association of North America in 2019.

Growing up as kids, Taylor and Nick Reed played “cops and robbers” just like
millions of children did at a young age. With that said, the Reed brothers were slightly
more authentic than other make believers. 
 
“Our dad was a Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputy when we were kids,” said
Taylor Reed. “I remember dad would come home and bring us old cop equipment
like holsters, uniforms, vest covers and hats. Most of our equipment was real
when we were playing.” 
 
The Reed brothers’ dad, Kyle, is still in law enforcement, part of the
Ellinwood Police Department. Watching and idolizing their dad growing up, both
Taylor and Nick are now members of the Great Bend Police Department. 
 
“We grew up around it,” said Nick Reed. “30-plus years in law enforcement. It
rubs off on the children. We’d play cops and robbers, running around the
neighborhood…even getting stopped by cops a few times.” 
 
Playing with the neighbor kids, Taylor and Nick’s younger sister Elle would
typically be the brothers’ “bad guy.” 
 
Because of his job, it was always hit and miss if their dad would be around on
holidays or the kids’ sporting events. 
 
“He would always have the radio on,” said Taylor Reed. “When he was at your
sporting events, he would sometimes have to leave with lights and sirens on because
something was going on. Now we’re living that. It’s kind of all we know.”

Both Nick and Taylor acknowledged that even with the wild schedule, it never
stopped their dad from being a great father and role model. Their father’s
profession remained an interest in both of their lives growing up, beginning with older brother, Taylor. Taylor started working at the jail for the Sheriff’s Office in 2014 and
transferred to the police department in 2017. 
 
“Being a police officer is something I’ve always wanted to do,” said Taylor
Reed. “I feel like I’m living the dream. I’m a K-9 officer. This is one of the
few jobs out there that you see the impact you’re making on the community.” 
 
Prior to joining the police department, Nick was loading boxes for UPS and
coaching football in Hoisington. One night at a restaurant eating a steak,
Great Bend Police Chief Steve Haulmark approached Nick in 2021. 
 
“Chief Haulmark happened to be at the restaurant and came up to me,” said Nick Reed.
“He said ‘I want you to apply for the police department.’” 
 
The GBPD and city policy on nepotism changed shortly after Haulmark approached
Nick. Nick became the first officer hired under Haulmark. 
 
“My dad has been in law enforcement so long, he’s been giving me tips,” said
Taylor Reed. “I learn from him and I learn from my mistakes. Nick gets the tips
from my dad and me. I’m telling you now, Nick is going to be a better cop than
me or my dad.” 
 
“I’ve been blessed to have such great role models to help me progress in my career
so far,” said Nick Reed. 
 
Working with the K-9, Taylor’s schedule typically staggers both day and night shift
at the Great Bend Police Department. Because of his role with K-9 Menta, Taylor usually works with Nick every day. 
 
“Coming from when we were two feet tall to now, working together, it’s surreal,”
said Nick Reed. 
 
“The chemistry that we have working together is unreal,” said Taylor Reed. “I
know what he’s going to do and he knows what I’m going to do.” 
 
Behind closed doors, during down time, each brother has his fun poking at the
other or jokingly starting an argument. 
 
“He’ll be typing up something, and I’ll just be messing with him,” joked Nick
Reed. “Just to get a quick reaction from him.” 
 
That’s brothers being brothers behind closed doors. Out in the public and on
duty, both realize there is a job to do. 
 
“Taylor is fearless,” said Nick Reed. “It does not matter what he’s going to
throw himself at. He’s right there and is going to get the job done.” 
 
“Nick is a sponge,” said Taylor Reed. “He sits back and watches, doesn’t give
his opinion and then he acts. He learns from everything. He has a huge head
start.”

Wednesday's Weather

Following four separate executive sessions Tuesday, totaling 95 minutes, the
Great Bend City Council agreed to give City Administrator Kendal Francis a 2%
pay increase. 
The initial executive session was slated for 30 minutes, but the council
returned to extend the session 30 minutes, again for 20 minutes and finally a
15-minute session. Francis was included in the final two sessions. 
Mayor Cody Schmidt made the brief announcement as the council returned the
final time from executive session. 
"I look for a motion to approve giving City Administrator Kendal Francis a two percent raise," said Schmidt.

The city council voted 6-0 in favor of the raise. Francis’ current
contract is scheduled through Aug. 5, 2023. Last December, Francis’ contract was extended to 2023 and was also given a 2%
raise at that time. 
Francis was hired in 2018 after serving as city administrator in Coffeyville.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend City Administrator given 2% pay raise

Freddie Thomas was back in Barton County District Court Tuesday morning for sentencing. 

A Barton County jury convicted Thomas of Voluntary Manslaughter in June following a seven-day jury trial. Sentencing was originally set in August but continued at the request of the State of Kansas for additional time to review the defendant’s motion for probation.

Thomas had no prior criminal history and was assigned the lowest possible criminal history score in the Kansas sentencing grid. 

For a severity level 3 felony offense, and the lowest criminal history score, Thomas’s presumed statutory sentence called for 59 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections and that he serve the sentence without first getting probation.

Thomas was convicted of shooting and killing Jeremy Saldana on Sept. 11, 2015. Thomas claimed self-defense after the altercation in the front yard of a Great Bend residence. District Court Judge Ron Svaty, who has since retired, ruled in Thomas' favor.

The case was appealed, where the Kansas Court of Appeals ruled the case should proceed to a jury trial. The jury was in favor of a conviction of one count of voluntary manslaughter on June 23, 2022.

On Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022, Thomas, through his attorney, Donald E. Anderson, filed a motion with the court asking that Thomas be granted probation instead of prison. After hearing the arguments of counsel on the request for probation, District Court Judge Carey Hipp denied Thomas’ request for probation and ordered him to serve 59 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections.

2015 Great Bend homicide suspect sentenced to 59 months

Tuesday night, Great Bend Fire Chief Luke McCormick took time during the
Great Bend City Council meeting to recognize fire department staff that responded
to a challenging scene in August. 
On Aug. 23, ambulance personnel was dispatched to Fuller
Industries to respond to an industrial accident. McCormick was pleased with his
team’s response to help the severely injured employee at Fuller. 
"As part of that response, quick action and medical care, the outcome made a huge difference on an individual in our community," said McCormick. 
53-year-old Leo Sobba was transported to The University of Kansas Health System
– Great Bend Campus by ambulance. 
Along with Great Bend Fire Department ambulance personnel, the Great Bend
Police Department and Barton County Sheriff’s Office responded.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

At this time, the Commission will be asked to declare a temporary burn ban until conditions improve.

&nbsp; &nbsp;B. SOLID WASTE: Appointment of Director: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Matt Patzner, Director of Operations, will provide details. Earlier this year, the County advertised for the position of Solid Waste Director. Work generally includes management of Landfill operations to include budget development, staff management and operational control. After accepting applications and doing interviews, Jennifer Hamby, who has been serving in the position of Interim Director, was appointed to the position.

&nbsp; &nbsp;C. FAÇADE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT: Extending the Grant Term – The Gallery: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Loretta K. Miller, The Gallery, located at 2019 and 2021 Forest Avenue, Great Bend, will provide details. During the September 21, 2021, Commission Meeting, Miller was allocated a total of $23,370.33 for two façade improvement projects. Contactor issues have caused the projects to be delayed. The Commission will be asked to extend the grant period to June 30, 2023.

&nbsp; &nbsp;D. FAÇADE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT: Extending the Grant Term – B&amp;H Development, LLC: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Mr. Patzner will provide details. During the September 21, 2021, Commission Meeting, B&amp;H Development, Great Bend Coffee and Yours Truly, 2015 and 2017 Lakin, Great Bend, was allocated a total of $20,000.00 for a façade improvement project. STAFFORD COUNTY—Three adults and 3 juveniles were injured in an accident just after 9:30a.m. Tuesday in Stafford County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 GMC Sierra driven by James Lee Estes, 47, Castle Rock, Colorado, was westbound on U.S. 50 three miles south and two miles east of St. John.

The pickup traveled left of center and struck an eastbound 2011 Dodge Charger driven by Juan Carlos&nbsp;Gonzalez-Saldana, 36, Dodge City, head-on.&nbsp;

EMS transported Estes to the Stafford County Hospital and Gonzalez-Saldana to a Via Christi in Wichita.&nbsp;

EMS also&nbsp; transported two passengers in the Dodge Lucia Velez, 41 and a 15-year-old girl both from Dodge City to the hospital in Pratt.

Two additional passengers, a 5-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, both from Dodge City were transported to Wesley Medical Center. The 5, 12 and 15-year-old children were not properly restrained, according to the KHP.&nbsp; The agency did not have seat belt usage information for Gonzalez-Saldana.

3 adults, 3 children hospitalized after Stafford Co. head-on crash

Last month, United Way of Central Kansas announced it was working with the Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University to gather information from residents of Barton and Pawnee counties to better understand local needs and prioritize the services provided by its 22 community partners. On Tuesday, UWCK Director Charell Owings announced about half the desired number of surveys had been completed.

“We are happy with the number of responses we have received and have high hopes that we can reach the 1,000 responses we would like to have to ensure a useful set of data," she said. "This is a great opportunity for each person in our community to have a say in where resources are most needed. The survey only takes five minutes but could have a lasting impact on the community.”&nbsp;

United Way of Central Kansas will use the survey data to partner with additional key stakeholders and other non-profits to inform priorities and utilize the results as a resource for program development, funding, and partnership engagement. This work is currently underway in collaboration with The University of Kansas Health System who will use this data, along with their own research and focus groups, to determine how the community can collaborate to improve health and social care.

Those who complete the survey can enter a drawing to win one of six gift cards ranging from $50 to $100. Dillons and Casey’s General Store donated the gift cards. The survey link will be live until September 16th.
