Society rewards a lot of people with things like fortune and fame. Often overlooked are those who make the biggest differences in everyday life. Eagle Media is trying to change that. Beginning Sept. 1, anyone can visit Great Bend Post.com and nominate a school hero, presented by OPI. The winner will be selected on the fourth Tuesday of each month, and Eagle Media's Director of Promotions Becca said that lucky winner will receive $500.

"We're doing something brand new this year: it's nominate a school hero," she said. "Nominations will start being accepted on the form on Sept. 1. Now is the time to recognize those who go above and beyond. You can nominate a school hero."

The rules are simple. Eligible heroes must work at a Barton County school. Anyone can nominate the hero. Tell us their name, what they do, and why they deserve to win.

"Admins, teachers, paras, coaches, maintenance staff, cafeteria workers - anyone is accepted," Becca said. "Again, you have to go to Great Bend Post.com, click on the contest tab, and check out Who is Your School Hero."

The Great Bend Rec's adult coed softball season came to a close on Friday, Aug. 22 at the Great Bend Sports Complex. The league jumped from four teams in 2024 to eight in 2025.&nbsp; 

After a 7-game regular season, the league was split into an open championship bracket and a recreational championship bracket.

La Pasadita Carniceria won the adult coed slow pitch softball open bracket championship. Javier Chavez was the team manager, and they defeated GMS Motors in the finals.

Los Illegals won the adult coed&nbsp; slow pitch softball recreational championship bracket. Hector Dominguez was the team manager, and they defeated Encounter Church's Holy Hitters in the finals.

Paintings, photographs, and sculptures by area artists will be on display when the Shafer Gallery hosts the opening reception for the annual Friends and Acquaintances Community Art Exhibit, which will feature a special collection by Mary Kottmann, from 4-6 p.m. Sept. 12.

Gallery Director Alyssa Bliven said the show is presented in conjunction with the Barton Arts Council and will be on display through Oct. 31. The reception will feature food, drinks, and artist talks.

“Mary is a local creator known for her paintings and mixed media collages,” she said. “She has been a steady presence in our gallery and community and is an active member of the international group Society of Layerists in Multi-Media (SLMM) and the local group Artists At Large (AAL). Alongside Mary’s work, the exhibition showcases a vibrant mix of local artists as well as artists from across the region who have participated in past gallery exhibitions.”

This exhibit also serves as the setting of the annual Bill McKown Masquerade Ball, which is a true celebration of the community nature of not only this exhibit, but the gallery overall. The ball is for ages 21 and up only. RSVP is required. The event will feature live music from Little Big Band, food, wine, and a costume contest. Visitors can also vote for the People’s Choice Award winner.

Shafer Gallery to host opening reception for “Friends and Acquaintances” exhibit

Nearly one year ago, the Barton Community College Board of Trustees approved a series of renovations at the Kirkman Center on the campus. The renovation would be paid through private dollars and would not exceed $3 million. Barton Athletic Director Trevor Rolfs updated Cougar fans on the project's progress with his appearance on 1590 KVGB/95.5 FM's "Sports Day" program Friday.

"We're just so excited about the changes that are coming and that have been made and that were so necessary," he said. "It's going to positively impact so many student athletes, the fan experience, the community - all of those who visit Barton Community College, with that facility being the front door to so much of campus life."

Fall sports are already underway at the college. The Cougar volleyball team calls the Kirkman Center home, and Barton will play the front end of its schedule on the road as Mammoth Construction finishes up the renovation with a deadline of early October.

"They've been really good about working with us, allowing the teams to still utilize the facility for practices," Rolfs said. "We're certainly hoping by (Oct. 4), everything will be far enough along, from a safety standpoint, that we can have our first home volleyball match in there on Oct. 4."

From there, the Cougars will play eight of their final nine matches of the regular season at home. Full completion of the renovation is slated for Nov. 1, ahead of the winter basketball season.

"If you've been coming to that gym regularly for the last 5, 10, or 40 years, you really won't think you're in the same building when you come in after that Nov. 1 completion date," said Rolfs.

The project officially started in 2019 but has seen delays with the COVID pandemic and fundraising issues. The project will create additional staff offices, improve the spectator experience, and fix outdated areas of the Kirkman Center. The renovation will also feature a new Hall of Fame room and Cougar Den on the south end of the gym, locker room renovations, and updated concession stands. Rolfs called it a necessary part of the school's growth.

"In 1996, which is the last time any brick-and-mortar construction was done for an athletic department side of things, was when Kirkman was instructed," he said. "At that time, we had 13 programs and like 236 student athletes. Now, we have 23 programs and more than 400 students connected with athletic programming. We ran out of space in a lot of ways."

Rolfs said the current weight room is able to accommodate all 23 programs, though it is designed to serve half that many athletes. After the indoor project is completed, college officials will look to add more space to the campus to better serve students and athletes, and to aid the school with recruiting.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) will host five public meetings this fall to share information on proposed state park fee changes and hear directly from Kansans. These town hall-style meetings will provide the public with an opportunity to learn about the proposed changes, ask questions, and provide feedback. Fees remain unchanged at this time; any adjustments will require a vote of approval by the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission before they are implemented.

“Utility and operational costs for our state parks have risen nearly 45 percent since 2016,” said Conner O’Flannagan, KDWP State Parks Director. “These proposed changes are necessary to ensure our parks remain safe, well-maintained, and accessible to all Kansans, both now and for future generations.”

KDWP to host public meetings on proposed state park fee changes

Barton Community College’s 17th annual Wounded Warrior Golf Scramble, which benefits wounded soldiers from Fort Riley, is set for Sept. 20.

The Wounded Warrior Golf Scramble is an opportunity to support our Soldiers and thank them for their dedicated service to our country.

Shotgun start is set for 9:30 a.m. at the Rolling Meadows Golf Course in Junction City. Standard four-person golf scramble rules apply.

Individual golfers not on a team will receive assistance in joining teams still being formed. Members of the Barton men’s and women’s golf teams will be available to join any team that needs extra players.

The entry fee is $70 per person, which includes the day of golfing, a cart, a meal, and participation gifts. The tournament is limited to the first 22 teams to sign up.

In 2016, the Kansas Legislature passed Senate Bill 367 to reform the juvenile justice system. Marissa Woodmansee, director of Juvenile Services in the 20th Judicial District, said the numbers are starting to show the impact of that legislation.

"We probably still average the same amount of intakes because that's always the front door," she said. "But at that time, we also were in a place where we had out-of-home placements for our juvenile offender population and intensive probation. At that time, before diversions were mandated by the state, our intensive-supervised probation numbers were probably about 75-100."

There have been 436 juvenile intakes this year and 530 last year. Woodmansee said that figure typically remains static at around 500 annually. The difference is where kids go once they are in the program. With the help of 161 diversions this year, where the offender typically pays a fine and meets certain requirements to avoid criminal prosecution, intensive probation has fallen to just 26 cases.

"This is what some of that reform was intended to do," Woodmansee said. "Giving us the additional funds within our community to create programs that work for us, that was the intent behind some of that reform."

More programs are in the way. Barton County is a pilot site of the Stepping Up for Youth Initiative, which kicked off in April. Working alongside stakeholders like area mental health professionals, education and law enforcement officials, and the Barton County Commission, the program is designed to identify and address behavioral-health issues that are best treated outside the justice system.

Not a second-class city, but a city of the second class. Great Bend falls in the middle of the three classes set forth in Kansas Statutes Chapter 14. The classification helps define a city's structure and regulations. City Attorney Allen Glendenning recently appeared on 1590 KGVB/95.5 FM's "City Edition" show to explain the differences in classification.

"By and large, if you have a population of 15,000 or more, you're going to be a city of the first class," he said. "If your population is between 2,000 and 15,000, you're a city of the second class. If your population is under 2,000, you're a city of the third class."

Typically, cities of the second class, including Great Bend, are governed in the mayor-council format. As attorney for a city of the second class, Glendenning estimates that around two-thirds of his job is providing legal counsel to the city, and about one-third is prosecuting crimes.

"Some of the larger cities in Kansas, particularly up in the northeast around the Kansas City-area - Overland Park and those kind - they actually have an in-house law firm," Glendenning said. "Some of them have multiple lawyers, then they break down the various tasks like advising the police department, the street department, and different departments."

Glendenning said in Great Bend's governing format, most decision-making is supposed to be conducted out in the open. The city council makes most of the decisions. The mayor oversees affairs of the city, appoints officers, and runs council meetings. The mayor can vote when there is a tie on regulation motions and resolutions, to get a necessary majority to pass a regular ordinance, and on first instance on charter order.

Regular ordinances are routine matters and require a majority of the entire elected body to pass, not just those present and voting. Charter ordinances come from the Kansas Constitution, which says cities can opt out of a state statute as long as that statute is not a state-wide concern and not applicable to all cities. Those require a two-thirds majority to pass. Glendenning said examples of charter ordinances in Great Bend include court costs to help offset incarceration fees and guest taxes.

What inspires me, as the president of Fort Hays State University, is the impact of our students, faculty, and staff. What I love about Elle Hutchinson’s story is how it embodies the essential traits we relish at FHSU. Elle is a determined contender, an inspired innovator, and a caring individual. Elle’s journey in higher education has been nothing short of remarkable.

Elle shared that Fort Hays State University (FHSU) was the perfect fit for her when choosing a university. Growing up near Hays and engaging with FHSU alumni allowed her to appreciate the institution's value. Elle shared with me that the decision was ultimately grounded in affordability, the transferability of her credits from Barton Community College (BCC), and her desire to remain close to family.

Elle graduated with her associate’s degree from BCC, graduating with highest honors, just a week before she walked across the stage at Great Bend High School, a unique achievement that pushed the boundaries of what she thought was possible.

Like FHSU, BCC is very student-focused. When the leadership at BCC learned about Elle pursuing her high school diploma and her associate's degree simultaneously, they worked with Elle to create and promote a program designed to facilitate an academic pathway for other high school students. That spirit of innovation, of always blazing a new path, is precisely what FHSU is all about.

The challenge of pursuing two degrees simultaneously truly motivated Elle. She wanted to challenge herself, push beyond conventional boundaries, and set an exemplary trajectory for her educational experience. Hearing how other high school students benefited from the initiative Elle helped establish strengthened her resolve and motivated her to keep moving forward.

Managing coursework from two institutions (Great Bend High School and BCC) came with several obstacles. “I encountered skepticism from peers and guidance counselors who doubted my ability to succeed. However, this motivated me to seek assistance from those who believed in my potential. I found that surrounding myself with encouraging support systems was crucial.”

Maintaining balance among the demands of work, academics, and personal life is another skill Elle developed. Balancing her commitments meant focusing weekdays primarily on work and studies. This sometimes involved finding creative ways to integrate schoolwork into her social time, ensuring she could enjoy life while fulfilling her responsibilities. Through it all, Elle’s priority was always to remain close to family and friends.

Elle carried that philosophy with her to FHSU, where she served on the Student Government Association, holding several leadership roles, and as a student assistant in the Office of Student Fiscal Services. While at FHSU, she majored in Business Education – Corporate Communications. She chose this major for its versatility in the real world, plus its helpfulness in pursuing a legal career.

“Law has long been a field I aspired to enter, primarily due to its versatility and my passion for helping others. An attorney can do almost anything; they are not confined to just practicing law. Additionally, there is a lot of variety within the practice of law,” Elle shared

Elle is interested in agricultural law. Last summer, she interned at Bauer &amp; Pike Law Firm in Great Bend, which solidified her interest in the legal field and introduced her to the complexity and balance built into our legal system. She also benefited greatly from this real-world learning experience and from the dedicated mentorship she received.

Another pivotal experience for Elle was her employment as a student worker in the Student Fiscal Services office at FHSU. “I engaged with a team that shared professional guidance, and we became lifelong friends.” Working in Student Fiscal Services opened Ellie’s eyes to the available financial resources available to help keep the Fort Hays State experience affordable. She learned about many different scholarships that helped reduce the cost of tuition for her at FHSU. She also gained a heightened awareness of the financial resources that exist to make the next step in her academic career, law school, more affordable.

Staying focused on her academic and career goals often required establishing a balance in the demands for her time to ensure she still maintained a social life, which always remained important to her. “I believe that healthy interaction with friends can enhance productivity. Though I prioritized homework, I ensured that I scheduled social activities to maintain my mental health. This kept me motivated. There were many times when I had to make a tough decision to stay in and study rather than go out. You have to be willing to make sacrifices.”

Elle credits her achievements to her family. “They supported me through the good, the bad, and the ugly. I cannot imagine trying to do all of this without such amazing parents, support systems, and role models.”

Elle credits her remarkable success to her father, Shawn Hutchinson; her mother, Jamie Hutchinson; her BCC advisor, Karen Kratzer; the student fiscal services staff; and Dr. Wendy Rohleder-Sook, FHSU chairman of the department of communication studies, law, and political science. She is also grateful for the mentorship of Judge Charles Pike (Great Bend Municipal judge) and Julie Carroll, attorneys at the Bauer and Pike Law firm, where she interned last summer.

With her current studies completed, including a FHSU bachelor's degree earned with honors, she is taking a gap year before pursuing law school. In the interim, she is working in her family-owned small business, Satellite Pros &amp; Central Plains Security, and has recently accepted a position as a media consultant for Barton County.

As we celebrate Elle’s achievements, let us also recognize the spirit of those who support our students, from faculty to family. Together, we forge paths for the future, inspired by stories like Elle’s that remind us of the impact we can have in our communities. 

Here’s to Elle and all our students who strive for greatness, shaped by their experiences and determination, while driven to serve the greater good!

Life on the farm has never been easy. Long hours, unpredictable weather and volatile markets are part of the job, but in recent years, wheat growers and farmers across the country have faced a wave of challenges that go beyond the fields. Rising debt, shrinking margins and isolation have placed enormous strain on rural families. Tragically, farm organizations, including the National Association of Wheat Growers, have reported an increase in suicides among producers, often younger growers without the financial cushion to withstand the hardships of modern agriculture.

Farming is more than an occupation; it is a way of life. But it is also one of the most stressful professions in America. Studies show suicide rates among farmers are two to five times higher than the national average. At the same time, rural communities often lack adequate mental health services, leaving producers to carry their burdens alone.

National surveys reveal that three out of four rural adults believe reducing stigma around mental health is critical. Yet cultural barriers, especially the perception that asking for help is a weakness, continue to silence conversations. For too long, resilience has been defined only as pushing through. True resilience also means recognizing when support is needed.

Building Awareness and Reducing Stigma

Farm groups, nonprofits and mental health advocates are working to break that silence. Campaigns like Farm State of Mind from the American Farm Bureau Federation, Rural Minds and Stigma-Free Mental Health are providing resources tailored to the agricultural community. These efforts emphasize that seeking help is not a failure but an act of strength.

“Your wellness is a key to your farm’s wellness; stress management is a business strategy,” said Sarah Gideon, executive director of Health Innovations Network of Kansas Inc. “More than ever before, we have to look out for one another, to have those hard conversations when we notice changes in our friends and community members.”

Gideon added that resources are available locally, regionally and across the state, and no one should feel they have to manage alone.

Social media has become a valuable tool in spreading the message. Simple posts reminding neighbors that help is just a call away through the 988 Suicide &amp; Crisis Lifeline, or pointing to resources from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, make a difference in connecting farmers to support.

For farmers and rural residents, support is closer than it may seem. The following organizations and programs offer confidential assistance, education and crisis intervention:

Every conversation helps. Whether it is checking in on a neighbor, sharing resources online or reminding a friend they are not alone, small actions can save lives. Reducing stigma and building awareness is a community effort and one that rural America cannot afford to ignore.

Farming will always come with challenges, but no one should have to carry the weight of those challenges alone. As Gideon put it, “If you don’t ask the hard questions, who will?”

“It is a huge accomplishment to have existed for 85 years!” reflects Bowers, emphasizing the significance of the club’s longevity. Luerman adds that this milestone “means that Kiwanis Club has made a memorable impact on our community.”The club’s mission remains as relevant today as it was at its founding. “Our mission is to make the world a better place one community and one child at a time,” explains Bowers. “We are focused on projects that support the youth.” This focus translates into substantial financial support, with the club contributing over $10,000 annually to youth activities, events, and play equipment, according to Luerman.

Transforming the Community Through Action

Over the decades, the Kiwanis Club of Great Bend has left its mark on the community through numerous projects that enhance quality of life for residents. Among their most visible contributions are the walking trail, playground, and splash pad shelter at Veterans Park. The club is also working on a new shade shelter at the recently rehabilitated Heizer Park.

Beyond infrastructure improvements, the club maintains a robust calendar of community events. They organize an annual spelling bee, Easter egg hunt, and Halloween costume exchange and parade. During the holiday season, the club demonstrates its commitment to addressing food insecurity by delivering 50 food boxes every December.Luerman particularly values the spelling bee, sharing, “My favorite activity is the spelling bee. I am just amazed how gifted our spellers we have in our community.”

Local leaders reflect on nearly a century of making a difference in Great Bend

The task is now upon Barton County elementary school students. Eagle Media in Great Bend is upping the stakes in its Make a Difference Contest, presented by OPI. Can the students up their game by making a difference in the community? Becca, Eagle's Director of Promotions, explains what the contest is all about. 

"It's for Barton County students in grades K-6," she said. "They are able to let us know how they make a difference, whether that's doing the dishes for their parents, helping their teacher in the classroom, or even picking up trash outside in the community. We want to know how you make a difference."

Last year's contest featured a monthly winner from September through May. Each student received $100, and their teacher also received a $100 gift card. This year, Eagle Media will recognize one student each week. That student will receive $100 and a certificate from OPI, as well as various goodies from other sponsors in the contest. But that's only part of the fun.

"Out of that list, we're going to have a monthly winner," Becca said. "The monthly winner is actually going to win an additional $100. They're also going to receive a really cool backpack filled with swag from all of our sponsors. Also, with the monthly winner, the teacher is going to win $100, too."

Students must fill out contest forms by themselves, though a parent will need to sign the form. The forms can be returned to the student's school or dropped off at the Eagle Media Center at 12th and Baker in Great Bend. Entries for the contest are being accepted now through May.

Carrie Minton has worn many hats in her time at Great Bend High School: student, athlete, coach, teacher, Panther Mom. She has spent more than half of her life in some role at the school. Now, she's adjusting to a new position at the school after taking on the job of assistant principal effective Aug. 1. 

"I'm excited about having a different role within the school," she said. "The opportunity to get outside of the classroom, but yet still be very involved with all the students, is probably what I'm looking forward to the most."

Minton graduated from Great Bend High School before earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska-Kearney. She later earned a master's degree in education administration from Fort Hays State University. She returned home to Great Bend, where she immediately began teaching and coaching at the high school. Now entering her 26th year in education, all but four of those years have been at GBHS.

Minton was an assistant basketball and softball coach from 1999-2004, then served as head basketball coach from 2012-2020. She has been the head softball coach since 2010. Her 2024 Lady Panther squad advanced to state for the first time in nine years, and her 2025 squad missed state by a single run. Minton will especially miss that group of young ladies as Shawn Behr was hired to lead the team in 2026.

"They've done some really fantastic things and created a lot of excitement over the last couple of years," said Minton. "Knowing I was going to be taking a step back from that part of it was pretty difficult, but I was pretty confident they would be able to find somebody to lead the program."

Minton will replace Kip Wilson in her new role and join Principal Brock Funke and Assistant Principal Dustin Klassen on the administrative team. Minton's focus will be on disciplinary issues for junior and senior classes, as well as overseeing the vocational classes and the English Department.

She will not be alone in her new role. Minton currently has two kids of her own at the school in Daxton, a senior, and Mikala, a sophomore. Daxton is entering his third year as starting quarterback for the football team, and has also helped the Panther basketball and baseball teams to state tournaments. Mikala played in the state volleyball tournament and ran state track as a freshman.

"It just gives me a different perspective on their daily lives here at the high school," Carrie said. "When I was in the classroom, they'd stop by periodically throughout the day. Now, I have the opportunity to see them multiple times. I'll get to enjoy all of their activities, especially the spring sports. The fall and winter weren't major factors, but in the spring, it will be nice to get to go watch and support them."
