Barton grad Emmy Kempke of Ellsworth attended Barton in 2018 and since graduating has flourished in her career and is now a Senior Staff Accountant at Adams Brown in downtown Wichita on the firm’s healthcare team, which is one of the nation’s largest CPA and professional services firms.

Kempke was also a student associate for Adams Brown during her time at Barton, which helped her realize that is what she truly wanted to do.

“I wanted to become an accountant because early on, I had teachers and mentors who saw something in me that I hadn’t yet recognized in myself,” she said. “As I continued studying accounting, I realized I wanted to stick with it because it challenges my brain in ways I enjoy. It’s the perfect blend of working with numbers and working with people.”

Kempke learned much more than academics as part of her college experience.

“One word that best captures my experience at Barton is ‘transformative,’” she said. “My time there wasn’t just about gaining academic knowledge; it was where I truly began to grow into the kind of professional I aspired to be. I developed critical thinking and communication skills, learned how to work effectively with others, and started to gain confidence in my career path.”

A large part of her success after college was due to a well-rounded classroom curriculum.

“Outside of lectures, the program at Barton helped prepare me for the workforce by building a lot of practical, real-world skills through team-based assignments, problem-solving activities, and group discussions,” she said. “I was regularly put in situations that helped strengthen my communication, collaboration, and time management skills.”

Kempke said that while the curriculum and academic strategy were vital, the people implementing those elements were just as vital.

“I was incredibly fortunate to learn from some of the best instructors and other staff members during my time at Barton,” she said. “They were supportive both inside and outside the classroom, encouraging, approachable, and willing to go the extra mile.”

Being involved in accounting, Kempke also realized that Barton was a wise choice in terms of fiscal responsibility.

Barton was a great financial option for me because I was able to earn enough scholarships and grants to fully cover my first two years of college, including tuition, room and board, and even books,” she said. “That level of support allowed me to focus completely on my education without the added stress of debt or expenses. It also gave me the opportunity to save money to fund the remainder of my undergraduate degree. Choosing Barton made a huge financial difference and set me up for long-term success.”

Kempke said she encourages anyone considering Barton, a career in accounting, or any related business field to apply.

“I would absolutely recommend the Barton to anyone considering a career in accounting,” &nbsp;she said. “The education I received there laid a solid foundation and gave me a real head start when I transferred to complete my undergraduate degree. Barton student climbs the ranks to become senior accountant

A new government report ranked the states on energy spending, and Kansas is No. 19. The Energy Information Administration added up the total amount of money spent by end users on petroleum, electricity, natural gas and other fuels. In the year 2023, the most expensive energy states were Alaska, Wyoming and North Dakota. Alaska residents spent an average of $12,000 each that year. Florida residents enjoyed the lowest energy expenses at about $3,700. Kansans spent more than $5,000. Kansas operators discovered five new oil fields in Kansas in June and July. That's 14 new fields so far this year. The Kansas Geological Society recognized two new fields in Gove County, and one each in Graham, Logan and Sheridan counties.

Regulators okayed 20 new drilling locations in Kansas last week, with five new permits in Western Kansas and 15 east of Wichita. Three of those are in Haskell County.&nbsp; At 478 permits so far this year, down from 664 last year at this time.

Operators in The Sunflower State completed nine wells last week. Five are east of Wichita and four are in Western Kansas, including two wells in Barton County and one in Finney County. Independent Oil and Gas Service reports 801 completed wells so far this year, compared to 901 a year ago.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is up 13 percent from a week ago, but down five percent from a month ago, and down 34 percent from a year ago. The tally west of Wichita this week is up two rigs to eleven.

The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes shows a decline of three gas rigs but an increase of one rig drilling for oil.&nbsp; The total in Texas is up one; North Dakota and Louisiana are each down one.

Media analysis of crude oil prices is all over the map. So are prices, but its a smaller map.&nbsp; Crude traders shrugged off "Russia supply fears" on Monday thanks to "India tariff uncertainty" on Tuesday. NYMEX crude settled more than a dollar higher Monday, but held underneath a $65 ceiling established three weeks ago. Prices cascaded on Tuesday dropping two percent by lunchtime. Prices this month started within striking distance of $70 a barrel, but by the second week in August had dipped below $65 a barrel, where they remained for the last 16 trading sessions. Prices were flirting with p $65 in New York after the holiday break on Tuesday.

India is reportedly curbing its sanctioned oil purchases from Iran and Russia, but China insists it will always ensure its energy supply in ways that serve its national interest.&nbsp; The foreign ministry posted on social media that it won't respond to what it called coercion and pressuring, but will instead firmly defend its sovereignty, security and development interests.

Reuters reports that oil shipments to China from Saudi Arabia are set to fall next month, down from a more than two-year high this month, after the state oil firm raised prices. Saudi Aramco will ship about 43 million barrels or 1.43 million barrels per day to China in September, down from 1.65 million in August.

The government reports lower pre-Labor Day gasoline prices than last year. EIA said the national average of $3.15 per gallon last week was 5% (or 17 cents per gallon) lower than at the same time last year. The government expects that to drop another 35 cents by December, driven by continuing growth in crude supplies.

The government American natural gas consumption is near an all-time high and will likely set a record this year. The Energy Information Administration predicts natural gas consumption will rise one percent to a record 91.4 billion cubic feet per day this year, then dip slightly next year.

Smoky Hills PBS, Great Bend partners announce series 'Growing Together'

The facelift of the Great Bend High School gymnasium continues. Last summer, district staff covered much of the lower portion of the gym with a coat of bright white paint and new lettering. This summer, staff moved upstairs to paint underneath the bleachers and on the stairs.

"I think it's added some life to the gym," said GBHS Activities Director Matt Westerhaus. "It's a great gym. There are not many gyms like that in Kansas that are built like that these days. There's just a lot of nostalgia, and it's just a great place to play with a lot of history. I think what we've done is just enhanced and upgraded the gym in terms of color scheme."

The goal is to get rid of as much of the old tan color as possible. Gray paint was added beneath the bleachers and on the stairs, and the stair fronts were accented in black.

"You don't want to detract or take away from the gym in any way, shape, or form, so anything we can do to enhance that gymnasium for our players, students, community, the fan experience, it's something you always have discussions about," Westerhaus said. "Hopefully, it's been well-received, and I think it has been. From the people we walk in, when they see that gym, they always have rave reviews and great things to say about it."

One portion of the gym that will remain tan is the ceiling, at least for the time being. Covering that part of the facility would be a large project, and USD 428 is still weighing its options.

"We may try to tackle that at a later time," said Westerhaus. "If you look at Barton County, they went with a black ceiling and we've seen some other places that have gone to a black ceiling. I think it really sets off everything. That would be down the road."

The Lady Panther volleyball team opens its season this Thursday at Garden City. The varsity will host a dual in the newly-painted gym for the first time on Oct. 2, with the varsity tournament following on Oct. 4.

The city of Great Bend hired Addison Crites to assist with the city's ability to communicate with citizens. Tuesday night, the public relations director addressed the city council for the first time to seek funds and approval for switching the city's website to a new provider. The body voted 7-0 to approve the move from Civic Plus to Revize, a firm that has helped create more than 3,600 government-related websites in its 26 years of business.

"I had an individual meeting, along with a staff webinar with an account manager from Revise a few weeks ago, to make sure our concerns and questions were made known before we seriously considered the decision," Crites said. "The largest benefit of making the change is the amount we will save annually, while still retaining the same day-to-day features we currently use."

The initial start-up cost of moving to the Revize platform is $20,060, with an annual fee of $7,990, which is half the amount the city currently pays to Civic Plus. Crites has also talked with city officials in Gardner and Winfield, which also utilize the Revize platform, and both cities have been pleased with the user-friendliness and customer service.

"Some other benefits of switching over include a fresh, new look to our web, as well as being more user-friendly, which has been a recurring complaint about our website from both city employees and citizens," Crites said.

The city's current contract with Civic Plus ends May 31, 2026. Crites said the transition to Revize should take 24-30 weeks, and the city will maintain its current web address. City Administrator Logan Burns told the council that Civic Plus has increased its rates each year. Crites said the city of Winfield has used the Revize platform for eight years without price increases.

The city also approved an add-on feature for American Disabilities Act compliance. An April 2024 ruling by the Department of Justice requires all city web content must be made available for citizens with disabilities. Cities with fewer than 50,000 residents must be compliant by April 26, 2027.

Councilmembers asked several questions about the switch. Crites said the Revize platform will feature most of the options currently offered by Civic Plus, including the ability to post council meetings and agendas and city ordinances. Revize offers a transfer feature for other items the city may wish to keep. Civic Plus currently offers a Request Tracker for citizen complaints. Crites said it may look a little different, but Revize offers a similar feature.

"Dancing with the Cougars" returns this year with another dance workshop featuring Latin dance styles at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 12 in Studio 34, and all proceeds go to support Barton Dance Theatre's trip to dance in New York City in January.

This one-time class will include the basics for popular dances such as salsa, merengue, mambo, and cha-cha.&nbsp; Barton Dance Instructor Danika Bielek will teach the class with the students from Barton Dance Theatre.

“Latin dances are expressive, rhythmic, and so much fun,” she said. “They can be danced with or without a partner. It’s a type of dancing where the whole body is dancing and connecting to the music. Usually, people came out of Latin dance class smiling and feeling invigorated.”

&nbsp;With dove season kicking off Monday, hunters should consider the many fields on Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) Wildlife Areas that are managed for dove hunting. Each year, KDWP staff plant and prepare fields with sunflowers, wheat stubble, and other food sources to attract doves and provide hunters with safe and quality hunting experiences.

To help hunters find these areas more easily, KDWP offers an interactive mapping tool that shows dove field locations, site details, and any special regulations hunters should know before heading afield.

“This popular mapping feature is a great way to start scouting for dove hunting on public lands,” said Tom Bidrowski, KDWP migratory game bird program manager. “We encourage hunters to use it to explore new areas, plan safe and enjoyable hunts, and make the most of the season.”

The 2025 migratory dove hunting season in Kansas runs from September 1 through November 29 and includes mourning and white-winged doves. Exotic doves – Eurasian collared and ringed turtle doves – may be taken year-round. Hunters may keep a daily bag limit of up to 15 migratory doves total, which can be mourning and white-winged doves in any combination. There is no limit on Eurasian collared or ringed turtle doves, but any taken in addition to the migratory dove daily bag limit must have a fully feathered wing attached for identification while in transport. The possession limit for migratory doves is 45.

Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks dove fields offer public hunting opportunities

Established in 2009, Cattle Feeders Hall of Fame honors the visionary men and women who have made lasting contributions to the industry. This year, the late Glenn A. Mull is one of five finalists for the 2026 class. Below is his biography from the contest:

Mull was destined to make his mark on the cattle and farming industry. He spent his formative years working on his parents’ farm, learning the values and integrity of the business instilled in his dad, Keith Mull. In the fall of 1969, Glenn began pursuing his higher education at Kansas State University in Manhattan.

Following Glenn’s graduation from the College of Business in 1973, Glenn and his wife, Elaine, began their lifelong adventure in the countryside of Pawnee County in Central Kansas. It is here where Glenn became a partner with his dad and the family owned feedyard (in Pawnee Rock) transitioned into commercial cattle feeding business, known as Mull Farms and Feeding, Inc. To that, over the years four more feedyards were created, with Kansas locations in: Haviland, Mentor (Smoky Hill Feeders), Kinsley and Fellsburg. Total feedyard and growing capacities were approximately 30,000 head.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sadly, Glenn and three other family members perished in a plane crash in Bellevue, Tenn., on Feb. 3, 2014. They were on their way to attend the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Conference in Nashville. Glenn is survived by two grown children and six grandchildren.

With the Labor Day holiday on Monday, the Great Bend City Council has moved its meeting to tonight at 6:30 p.m. at city hall. Action will be limited with just one item on the agenda.

City Administrator Logan Burns will provide an update on matters taking place across the city, and he will also update the council on abatements in the city.

The lone agenda item pertains to the city's website. In August, Revize, a government website agency, approached the city to discuss the benefits of what its platform offers. The city could receive a substantially cheaper deal through Revize while retaining the same features it currently uses through Civic Plus.

The initial startup cost with Revize is $20,060 with an annual cost of $7,990, which is half the amount currently paid to Civic Plus. The city will have the option of adding on a WCAF Scan and Remediation ADA service, which is recommended after an April 2024 Department of Justice ruling requiring state and local goverment websites be accessible to people with disabilities. Municipalities with populations under 50,000 must meet the requirement by April 26, 2007. The Revize contract includes a free redesign every four years.

Public Relations Director Addison Crites will present the agenda item to the council with the recommendation to approve a contract with Revize not to exceed $28,050.

GEARY COUNTY—Three people were injured in an accident just after 4:30p.m. Monday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Riley N.&nbsp;Brungardt, 24, Hoisington, was eastbound on Interstate 70 near Moritz Road. The driver lost control of the SUV in heavy rain.&nbsp;

The Jeep struck a 2024 Buick Encore driven by Tammy Bevan-Tyler, 63, Overland Park, who was parked on the South shoulder of I-70.&nbsp; The impact pushed the Buick forward into a 2019 Ford Ranger driven by Jake A. Sobonilla, 24, Fort Riley, who was also parked on the south shoulder. 

EMS transported Brungardt to&nbsp;Stormont Vail Health - Flint Hills Campus. Bevan-Tyler and a passenger in the Buick had minor injuries and were not transported. Sobonilla was not injured. All four were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Barton Co. woman hospitalized after 3-vehicle crash in heavy rain

Two Juvenile Services (JS) staff members recently came back to the office “fired up” because of a training event that offered ideas for a relatively new program, as well as for one of their long-time practices.

Mike Daniel and Ryan Lichter, JS assistant directors, attended the sessions at the Restorative Justice Authority in Pittsburg, Kan.

The training focused on their mentoring program and motivational- interviewing techniques.

“We started our mentoring program about six months ago, with basically nothing,” Daniel said. “It has been steadily growing but this recent training allows us to substantially enhance the program.

“We wanted to learn about how other agencies were developing their mentoring programs. I am glad we discovered we are on the right track. Now we have more knowledge; we are fired up.”

Mentoring young people can cover just about any topic, with the most common being school, homelife and employment.

“Sometimes we just hang out with them, maybe even drive around town a little or play disc golf,” Daniel commented. “These simple activities offer a number of ways to start conversations.

“We also do some cognitive work with kids to help them make better decisions.”

This often involves a “what if” scenario. For example, when a young person is asked: what will happen if you drink alcohol? Answers could be: have an accident; police involvement; and a penalty for breaking curfew.

“We ask them to play the tape forward,” Daniel summarized.

Daniel and his colleagues also try to determine what triggered a bad decision. For instance, the trigger can result from a young person feeling powerless, disrespected, ignored, unloved or manipulated.

He is confident the mentoring program will succeed because of “really good support” from his JS colleagues, as well as from judges, attorneys and others.

Ryan Lichter When Ryan Lichter and other JS staff members talk with clients, the goal is to “get them to open up a bit more, get them to take responsibility for their actions.”

The best way to start the conversation is with open-ended questions or comments; closed-ended questions oftentimes yield one-word answers.

For example, if a young person is asked ‘how’s your day going?’ the answer might be ‘okay.’

“But when I say ‘tell me about your day’ I get them to open up a little bit,” Lichter said. “Then I ask them to elaborate. This, along with positive feedback from me, can result in more of a give-and-take.

“We use this motivational-interview practice with kids and their families,” he continued. “When we can get them talking, we can find out what we are missing that we need to know. This is an important tool that may help them change negative behavior.”

Another main goal is to use client visits as a “prime opportunity to educate young people about figuring out their own solutions. Sometimes they reach that ‘aha moment’. This is what we want. Figuring things out on their own leads to the best results. Maybe they won’t need us as much or not at all.”

More information Young people participate in JS programs after they have committed low- or high-level crimes, or because of behavioral problems.

Programs include Juvenile Intake &amp; Assessment, Immediate Intervention, Intensive Supervised Probation and/or Community Case Management, depending on individual circumstances.

Lichter and Daniel expressed their appreciation to the Restorative Justice Authority for the special training in a relaxed atmosphere.

The RJA’s mission is to improve public safety, enhance clients’ and families’ accountability, and improve the client’s ability to live responsibly and productively through community-based programs.

Daniel and Lichter also noted the RJA helped them with information about documentation, orientation forms, and policies and procedures.

“They also are available to us anytime we have questions,” Lichter said. “We really appreciate their time and expertise.”

Barton Community College’s Early Childhood Education Program will host a free family event, “Wheels and Squeals,” from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 20 in the Case New Holland Parking Lot and Building, which is located at the northeast corner of the college’s campus.

The event will feature hands-on activities, including a “Touch-a-Truck” experience where children can explore large vehicles such as tractors, community booths, arts and crafts, and more.

Barton Instructor and Coordinator of Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education KellyAnn Bonnell said she was excited to celebrate young children and their families.

&nbsp;“We wanted to create an event that included numerous hands-on, collaborative activities that encourage play and exploration,” she said. “It’s also a great opportunity to focus attention on the needs of our youngest learners and their families.”
