The Zarah Apartments project is an adaptive reuse and historic preservation project that will create twenty four (24) new apartment units in the historic Zarah Hotel, right on the courthouse square in downtown Great Bend. 

With a coffee shop and a brand new restaurant on the first floor of the Zarah building, a six screen movie theater and a microbrewery just down the block, and a beautiful courthouse square/green space right across the street, the quality of life afforded to future residents of the Zarah Apartments will rival that of any downtown housing development in the entire state of Kansas.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Great Bend downtown apartment project receives $1.4 million in funds

Things were going well for Kanopolis Drive In Owner Josh Webb. Then big winds moved through on Dec. 15, 2021. The storm damaged the equipment, and Webb wondered if the drive-in would ever be open again. After using the 2022 season for repairs, Webb is happy to announce the big screen will again be lit up starting May 5.

"During the windstorm, we had our doubts just because the straight-line wind was coming directly out of the west, and our screen faces due west," he said. "When that storm came through, it came directly from Hays and Russell, and it hit the screen pretty square. We were seeing pieces of the fence flying by, and other parts of peoples' sheds and garages were flying by as well."

Webb said the facility had a good nine or 10-year run after he purchased it. Upon surveying the damage after the storm, he realized a reopening was possible. The Drive In is now digital, and the AM pole speakers have been fully replaced by FM sound through the radio.

"I grew up here in Kanopolis," Webb said. "When we bought it, it had been closed for about five years. I didn't want to see it deteriorate and fall down the rest of the way. Back then, it was 35mm. We ran on 35mm for two years, which was neat, then we got it converted to digital. We've seen a lot of people just happy you can park in your car, you can sit in your back chairs and look at the screen, and you're outside."

 The Kanopolis Drive In season begins Friday, May 5, and runs through Labor Day. The drive-in offers full concessions, and will offer a double feature every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with new movies every week or every other week.

Choosing to have the new walking and fishing bridge installed
professionally, instead of in-house, not only saved the City of Great Bend time
but it also means the bridge is ready for use at Veterans Lake. In March, the
Great Bend City Council approved the $158,555 purchase of a 230' bridge
installed by EZ Docks. 

Public Lands Director Scott Keeler said the railing on the
new bridge makes it easier for fishermen. "The rails are a different system," said Keeler. "They have knock-downs that lower down to about two feet tall. Younger fishermen or someone in a wheelchair has better access to get a fish in or out after they do catch one." 
The new bridge also includes a section that is wider to allow fishermen to sit
down without blocking traffic walking across. 
The bridge replaces the old wooden bridge that was installed around 2000 and
was starting to deteriorate. Great Bend has Federal Emergency Management Agency
reimbursement money from previous flooding and wind storms. Along with FEMA and
State of Kansas reimbursement funds, the city’s 15% of the project is
$23,783.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

New bridge at Vets Lake more fisherman friendly

At approximately 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, April 13, the Great Bend Fire Department responded to the 300 block of north US 281 Highway for the report of a grass fire. Upon arrival, GBFD units found a grass fire that had spread to a large group of trees and one structure with another residence being threatened by the fast spreading fire. The structure that burned was being lived in at the time. 

With the winds blowing 25-30 mph, gusting to 40 mph, additional resources were requested from Ellinwood Fire, Hoisington Fire and Albert Fire to assist with extinguishing the fire. Great Bend Fire would like to also acknowledge the Barton County Sheriff’s Office for providing traffic control, Barton County 911 and Barton County Road and Bridge for providing manpower and heavy equipment. 

GBFD units remained on scene throughout the night to monitor the area and extinguish any areas that reignited. The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time.

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (4/13)

Only around one-third of those who served in the Vietnam War are still living today. That's why, about a year ago, Larry Parsons, chairperson for the Wall That Heals/Great Bend Leadership Committee, decided to take action. The Wall That Heals will be arriving in Great Bend in less than a month, and Parsons shared details about the event at Wednesday's Barton County Commission meeting.

"When I first applied to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, I set four goals," he said. "They were to assist the Vietnam veterans in their healing process, recognize the families, educate the public, educate our youth, and to promote Great  Bend and Barton County."

The Wall That Heals is a three-fourths replica of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. On Sunday, May 7, the wall will be dismantled in Kyle, Texas, then transported 10 hours north to Claflin. On May 9, an escort group of 40-80 motorcyclists will escort the 53-foot, 70,000-pound trailer to Hoisington, then down 281 Highway to Great Bend.

The wall will then make a tour around Great Bend, going around the 281 Bypass to 10th Street. On its way to Main Street, Riley Elementary students will greet the wall with a decorated fence. Parsons said the wall has been greeted by lines a mile long and hopes to see a healthy throng of patriots in the Great Bend downtown area as the wall travels north down Main Street.

Park Elementary students will greet the wall as it passes by Dillons. The escort will continue north to 24th Street, then head west past Jefferson Elementary, where students will be waiting with flags. The parade will travel all the way down 24th to K-96 Highway before making a pair of left turns to arrive at its destination at Al Burns Field in Veterans Memorial Park.

The Wall That Heals will be on display 24/7 in Great Bend from May 11-14. Given the graduations that weekend and Mother's Day that Sunday, Parsons said many volunteers are still needed for set up, to staff the exhibit, and dismantle the wall that Sunday at 2 p.m.

"They will send along two people with them that are professionals," he said. "They will take charge once they get here. They will do the volunteer training. They will tell us where to set it for sure. They will make any changes."

An opening ceremony will be held on the morning of Thursday, May 11. Kansas Secretary of State and Great Bend native Scott Schwab will deliver a short speech, and approximately 600 Great Bend High School social studies students will be present at 9 a.m. to fulfill the exhibit's educational requirements. 

Parsons said the Wall That Heals is the largest traveling wall in the nation, and the only one to also feature a mobile education center. Other wall-host sites have drawn as many as 17,000 visitors.

The local Wall That Heals stop will also honor six local Vietnam veterans who died in the war. Private First Class Edward Lloyd Saenz was killed in action on Oct. 2, 1968, at the age of 20. Parsons presented a shadowbox to the Saenz family during Wednesday's commission meeting. Edward's brother, Chris, reminded everyone the Wall That Heals needs to be staffed 24/7, and would make a great volunteer project for local civic groups.&nbsp;

Just before 7 p.m., a large fire was reported approximately one mile north of JUCO Road between N. Washington Ave. and 281 Highway. The Great Bend Fire Department is receiving mutual aid from Hoisington, Albert, and Ellinwood departments.&nbsp;

N. Washington Ave. is closed at JUCO Road while crews battle the fire.

🎥 Fire crews battling blaze north of Great Bend

Easter egg hunts are an exciting part of the spring holiday that provide fun and excitement for children, but for young people with visual impairments, these contests are more challenging to enjoy. Barton at Fort Leavenworth Music Instructor Colvin Hooser decided to do his part to make sure children with visual impairments can also enjoy Easter by building “Awesome Eggs” that emit sounds.

“My wife has been a teacher of the visually impaired for over 20 years, and in 2016, we saw a news story about the Missouri Bomb Squad building beeping Easter eggs for children with visual impairments, but there were no instructions as to how to do it,” he said. &nbsp;“Several years ago, I remembered the video and set out to find out how to build these beeping Easter eggs.&nbsp; I found one article on how to build them, and we went from there. I acquired my electronics-building skills from years of working in the music industry and installing and repairing instrument electronics.”

Hooser said the eggs are about $14 per egg if purchased online. He has a group of Army veteran friends that help him build the eggs for about $5 a piece, and they donate them to individual families that have been identified through teachers of the visually impaired from around the area. Hooser covers the cost for materials out of his own pocket.

“Easter egg hunts were a big part of my family’s celebrations,” he said. “Once I realized people with visual impairments are excluded from participating in that activity, I wanted to change that.”

Barton music instructor creates egg hunt for visually impaired

As the weather warms up, it is the perfect time to get outside and spend some time with your children or grandchildren. Time spent outside is good not only for your children’s ability to be physically active it is also valuable for their minds, as well. There are many benefits when adults spend time with children, and being outside makes the time even better. Shared experiences strengthen the bond between parents and children and improve the children’s emotional health which in turns encourages nurturing parent behaviors. There is something about the change in season and the fresh air that is good for everyone’s mental and physical health. Besides the environment, there is typically movement involved with being outdoors that is also good for physical and mental health.

So many things are happening outside this time of the year. Trees are growing, plants are no longer dormant, there are insects everywhere and other parts of the natural environment are starting to emerge. Getting outside is a really good opportunity to spend time with your family just having a good time. There can be so many good lessons in getting outside to explore nature and learn about science. Kids are instinctively attracted to nature study.

Outside play is usually less structured which allows for children to explore things they like to do as well as be creative. Unplanned activity gives your children an opportunity to lead the play. They are continually being told what to do and how to do it, so going outside opens up the possibilities for them to engage in self-directed play. Let them choose what they’re going to do. That’s really empowering for them. Following a child’s lead during play helps them respond better when you need to them to follow your directions.

Play is truly the work of early childhood. For children, they’re completely learning about their world through play. They are learning cause and effect – they are beginning to understand what happens if I do ‘this’, which builds their self-esteem. Children learn they can make things happen by exploring their world. It can be simple things, such as throwing rocks or drawing in the mud. Being outdoors is an easy way for children to learn they can make things happen. Parents can provide materials for play such as water, sand, chalk, outdoor paint, balls and bubbles.

Outdoor play provides an array of benefits for children’s development. Large motor skills are strengthened as well as coordination and balance. Having a regular outside time during the day teaches children about routines and can they learn to anticipate the enjoyment of outside time. Finally, when exploring the outdoors children can have an opportunity to strengthen their social skills and make new friends. Being outside usually makes everyone feel better after the long cold winter. The sun and wind feel good but at the end of the day everyone is tired which leads to a good night’s rest. Time spent outside benefits everyone physically and mentally and is good stress relief!

The Great Bend Recreation Commission, in partnership with Barton
Community College, dove into their first eSports tournament in late March.

GBRC Director Chris Umphres said there were 24 participants
in their first tournament, with half of the players being college-aged. "They actually mixed all of them together, so the little kids were able to play against college kids," said Umphres. "It'll be nice if we can get a little bit more, we can separate them. It was a Rocket League game, so it's basically a soccer ball getting kicked around with a car. Parents were there cheering on the kids. It was pretty cool." 
At February’s Great Bend Rec board meeting, the commission discussed purchasing
seven PlayStation 5 consoles and several television monitors to host tournaments
and leagues. 
The 2022-2023 school year marked the third season that Barton Community College

RUSSELL — At 9 p.m. Wednesday, the Russell Fire Department was dispatched to 930 N. Lincoln — the “old lumber yard” — for a report of a structure fire, according to a media release. Crews arriving on scene observed a large vehicle storage shed on fire on the south side of the property. Crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly once access was gained. The structure sustained significant damage and most of the contents on the west side of the building are a complete loss. Two vehicles were stored on the east side of the structure, and both received minimal damage, mainly from smoke and heat. The railroad tracks that run along the south side of the property also had service suspended for an hour as crews had to use the ladder truck from across the tracks to provide water and aerial operations. This was due to the limited access that the property provided at the time of the fire.&nbsp; Crews remained on scene for two hours performing overhaul and checking for fire extension. The Russell Police Department, Russell Electric Department, Russell County 911 and Russell County EMS all assisted during the incident.

The Great Bend Police Department responded near the Central Kansas Dream Center, in the 2100 block of Broadway Avenue, Thursday afternoon to an armed suicidal subject.

"The subject was taken into custody without incident," said Bieberle. "We're seeking further medical attention for him."

🎤City Edition: Community Coordinator Christina Hayes

For one Great Bend family, excellence in spelling is a tradition. Following in the footsteps of his two older sisters, Christian Garcia claimed top honors at the Barton County Spelling Bee in February and advanced to the Sunflower State Spelling Bee held at Newman University on March 25. The competition involved 86 spellers from across the state and lasted 13 rounds. Garcia made it to the fourth round and placed 37th. 

Jazmin Garcia was the first sibling to win the Barton County Spelling Bee in 2014, followed by Jacklyn&nbsp;in 2019 and 2021. 

“Spelling is something we’ve practiced together,” said Jacklyn Garcia. “At home, I took on the role of&nbsp;‘pronouncer’ and would randomly select a word off the list and ask Christian to spell it. It’s really cool to see&nbsp;the names of all three of us on the spelling bee winner list. It’s okay if you don’t win, going to the state bee, in itself, is a grand accomplishment.”&nbsp;

All the Garcia siblings attended Riley Elementary School where Christian is now in the 5th grade with his twin sister, Jennifer. Jacklyn is a sophomore at Great Bend High School and Jazmin graduated from GBHS in 2020. 

Tyler Nolte, from Nemaha County, was named the 2023 Sunflower State Spelling Bee Champion and will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee this summer in Washington, D.C. The Scripps National Spelling Bee states that the purpose of the bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. 

The Barton County Spelling Bee is organized by the Kiwanis Club of Great Bend.&nbsp;

PAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement officers in Pawnee County had a surprise during a traffic stop Wednesday.

According to a social media report from Great Ben Police, both of department's K9 teams assisted in an enforcement activity in Pawnee Co. During the course of the enforcement, Officer Taylor Reed conducted a traffic stop for a minor violation. 

The driver was 28-year-old Rudy Ford, a defensive back with the Green Bay Packers. The seven year NFL veteran played college football at Auburn, according<a href="https://www.packers.com/team/players-roster/rudy-ford-2/"> to his Packer bio.</a>

"This interaction went great, but it makes you think. We have over 18,000 cars a day drive down 10th St in Great Bend. Good, bad or otherwise, you just don’t know who is passing through our communities."

Barton Community College to hold accreditation celebration

While the dry conditions continue, Great Bend Code Enforcement
Supervisor Art Keffer reminds all citizens that lawn maintenance needs to start
becoming a priority again. The overgrown vegetation ordinance states any grass that
is nine inches or higher is noncompliant…that includes weeds. "This year with the dryness, it might be more of a problem with the weeds and not just the grass," said Keffer. "Weeds love little water and can still grow well. Your yard might not look too bad, but there might be some areas of the yard that will cause you some problems." 
If citizens violate the overgrown vegetation ordinance, the property owner will
receive one letter per calendar year from the City of Great Bend. From the time
the owner receives the letter, they have 10 days to take care of the problem.
If not taken care during that time, the city has the right to mow the yard and
charge the owner for the service. 
Keffer said citizens can file complaints of overgrown vegetation by calling the
Code Enforcement office or submitting the complaint online. "There is an email program where you can email anonymously," said Keffer. "It doesn't have your name on it. We don't know who you are. We'll go out and look at those properties and see if there's something that needs to be addressed."

Supervisor Art Keffer reminds all citizens that lawn maintenance needs to start
becoming a priority again. The overgrown vegetation ordinance states any grass that
is nine inches or higher is noncompliant…that includes weeds. "This year with the dryness, it might be more of a problem with the weeds and not just the grass," said Keffer. "Weeds love little water and can still grow well. Your yard might not look too bad, but there might be some areas of the yard that will cause you some problems." 
If citizens violate the overgrown vegetation ordinance, the property owner will
receive one letter per calendar year from the City of Great Bend. From the time
the owner receives the letter, they have 10 days to take care of the problem.
If not taken care during that time, the city has the right to mow the yard and
charge the owner for the service. 
Keffer said citizens can file complaints of overgrown vegetation by calling the
Code Enforcement office or submitting the complaint online. "There is an email program where you can email anonymously," said Keffer. "It doesn't have your name on it. We don't know who you are. We'll go out and look at those properties and see if there's something that needs to be addressed."

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (4/12)

An era is coming to a close at Ellinwood High School. The group of seniors that helped the Eagle basketball team to a 76-15 record over the last four seasons will graduate next month. Wednesday morning, head coach Derek Joiner told his team he would not be back to coach next winter. Pending board approval, Joiner said he plans to coach girls' basketball at Ellinwood Middle School next year.

"I wasn't planning on leaving this soon, but the middle school girls' position opened up," he said. "Next year, my daughters will be in eighth, sixth, and fifth grade. When I saw that open, that's when communications started with administration. You spend a lot of time in coaching with practice, games, and preparation. I just have a certain pocket of time when my kids will be full of activities. This just gives me an opportunity to still serve and coach but also spend time with my girls."

The Ellinwood native graduated from EHS in 1998. After playing tennis for two years at Barton Community College, he headed to Stillwater, Okla., where he was a student manager and graduated assistant for Eddie Sutton and the Oklahoma State University basketball team. He returned to Kansas, becoming an assistant coach at Pittsburg State for six years. Upon returning home, he spent three seasons as a volunteer assistant coach to Craig Fletchall at Barton and coached at Ellinwood Middle School for a year.

Joiner took over a struggling Eagle basketball team nine years ago. EHS posted a 56-136 record in the nine years prior to his takeover, and the Eagles had just two winning seasons out of 18 before Joiner was named head coach. Joiner closes out his tenure with a 118-81 record, including a 24-0 run in the Central Prairie League over the past three seasons.

"It was a lot of fun just to bring some excitement back to the community," he said. "Obviously, having good players is what did it. People want to come watch good players. They don't really care about coming to watch the coach. We had really good players, and it was a lot of fun. We opened up the old gym back up. That was a neat thing this past year, and we had a lot of people at the ballgames there."

Joiner said leaving behind the people who have helped build the program is the hardest part about leaving, but believes the new coach is stepping into an established program.

"Our JV has been 12-2 for the last four years," Joiner said. "Our middle school was in the league championship game for six straight years before this past season. I'm not leaving when all the talent runs dry. I'm happy about leaving it in really good shape to the next guy."
