The Barton Community College Foundation honored Earl and Judy Fox as the 2023 recipients of the Distinguished Service Award (DSA) Friday, May 12 at the commencement ceremony in the Barton Gymnasium. The Distinguished Service Award was created in 1981 to recognize individuals that have shown genuine regard for and performed outstanding service to Barton Community College.

Earl and Judy have been a part of the Barton family since 1969, when the college opened. They have had three seats reserved at the gym to watch games and events throughout the years, and over decades of support, they’ve been to hundreds of basketball games, theatre productions, concerts, and other events.

What started as a love of Cougar sports blossomed into a love of all things Barton, as Judy took classes and completed the elementary education program at the age of 37, saying, “It was a God thing” that she had that chance to go into a field she loved.

After her retirement as a teacher in Great Bend, Judy served with distinction on the Foundation Board of Directors for four terms over 12 years and retired from the board last year. She is most proud of the scholarships offered to students and the projects the Foundation supports that help leverage support from others and inspire generosity.

“Scholarships from the Foundation are available to everybody,” she said. “Anyone who wants to go to Barton is eligible for help. We meet students where they are interested and help them achieve their dreams. I loved all of my time on the board; the dedicated and thoughtful decisions we made truly made a difference in so many lives.”

Over the years, the Foxes have watched students come and go, and for Earl, seeing that each and every student was welcomed and cared for as family here makes all the difference. He has also been a volunteer and donor to the Foundation for many years, even though he will claim he was just supporting Judy’s efforts.

&nbsp;“Students are not a number at Barton; they can’t get lost,” he said. “It’s not a giant lecture hall where the teacher doesn’t know your name.”

The Foxes have been staunch supporters of Barton and the Foundation for so long that they can’t think of a single activity or any one thing that draws them to Barton. They have a long list of favorite memories. They often share stories of these memories, attend events like the Big Benefit Auction, watch the new programs be created, and existing programs grow and love to see the unique Faculty Mini-Grant projects. Judy has a goal to start an endowment through the Foundation eventually.

“We just love Great Bend,” she said. “We love Barton. I can’t think of any place I’d rather be.”

The couple has lived in Great Bend for 61 years and has a daughter, Cindi, who lives in Pittsburg, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a son, Kenny, who passed in 1991. Earl is originally from St. John, and Judy is from Casper, Wyo.

The couples’ support of Barton and the Foundation has earned them the distinct honor of receiving the Distinguished Service Award. Throughout the years, Judy and Earl’s service has made an indelible mark on programs throughout the college, across our campuses, and on the lives of thousands. The Foundation is honored to recognize them.

The Great Bend Fire Department was asked by the Great Bend Police Department if they could assist with a vehicle recovery from Veterans Lake. At approximately 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, members of the Fire Department dive rescue team arrived at the boat ramp, deployed divers and successfully located the vehicle.

The gentleman in the vehicle parked on the ramp to walk on the new dock late last night.  The car did not appear to be put into park and rolled down the ramp and into the water after he got out.

A cable from a tow truck was attached to the vehicle and the vehicle was removed from the water. Assisting the GBFD dive team on scene was the&nbsp; Police Department and Larry Marshall from Marshall’s Towing.

Vehicle recovered out of Vets Lake in Great Bend

One of just 32 stops for The Wall That Heals this year, Great Bend said goodbye to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial replica Sunday afternoon. The Wall heads north to Rhinelander, Wisc., but not before servings its duty in front of many guests and volunteers. Susan Foss with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, was impressed with Great Bend's response to The Wall.

"I just feel like this community has been extra special," she said. "They have all come and showed support, from the children to the volunteers to the attendees, to just everybody has been amazing and overly supportive. Not one slot went unfilled."

The Wall That Heals Arrived in Great Bend Tuesday afternoon. Elementary students from various schools in Claflin, Great Bend and Hoisington greeted the wall with American flags as it was escorted through town. Two cranes with large American flags greeted the escort as it entered downtown Great Bend. Members of Great Bend High School's strength and conditioning classes were among the volunteers to set up the wall last Wednesday, and volunteers remained at the exhibit 24/7 throughout its three days at Al Burns Memorial Field.

Larry Parsons, chairperson for the Leadership Committee, helped bring The Wall to Great Bend. Foss said there are usually 30-36 stops each year, and there's a lot of coordination for each community on the tour.

"It usually takes about a year," she said. "There's an application entry timeframe, then you have to fill all the necessary paperwork out, then you go through interview processes. Then there's a lot of internal dialogue and trying to map out the trip."

The Wall That Heals features the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. It spent two weeks in Texas before coming to Great Bend, and will now spend two weeks in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (5/15)

The tradition of Hoisington athletics dates past 2010, but over the span
of the last 13 years fans have seen hundreds of great athletes compete on the
artificial turf and track. While the Hoisington school district will replace
the turf and track this summer, USD 431 Superintendent Patrick Crowdis said
anyone will have a chance to purchase a part of the old turf as a piece of
memorabilia. 

There will 1'-x-1' squares to be sold over the
Labor Day weekend celebration, and much larger rolls of turf will be cut and rolled
up at the beginning of summer. These rolls will be 7.5' wide and the width
of the football field. "These rolls will take some heavy equipment to get and load up," said Crowdis. "We want people to commit to it. When the company heads out with whatever is left over, whatever is setting there...we can't just throw that away in the landfill. They have people contracted to take that extra turf."

"They'll come to regrade just a little bit to make sure the drainage is as good as it was before, make some minor upgrades and then get the track and turf back in before the start of football season."

Citizen Kathryn Schaffner spoke before the Great Bend City Council
Monday and told the board that a police officer stopped by her house on
Broadway Avenue and told her she needed to get rid of her backyard chickens or
she would receive a Class B misdemeanor. Schaffner said there are areas in the city
ordinance that state how backyard hens can be allowed within city limits. "Every city official I communicated with, and it was numerous, agreed that the city ordinance is unclear," said Schaffner. "Law-abiding citizens that read the code prior to purchasing their chickens are being threatened with removal of chickens or misdemeanors equivalent to a DUI (driving under the influence)." 
Along with Schaffner, five other audience members spoke Monday night in defense
of allowing chickens on the owner’s premises.

Councilmember Jolene Biggs said
she heard from constituents that did not want chickens within city limits and
suggested that the city attorney write an ordinance to ban chickens in town. "People let their cats and dogs run at large...that's not common sense," said Biggs. "People let all kinds of things happen. Even though many people would do exactly what the rules say, there are many people that do not. I certainly don't want chickens running loose in the house next to me and having to call all the time to get that taken care of." 
Schaffner stated the code that law enforcement and animal control cite to say
chickens are illegal within city limits does not clearly deny backyard
chickens. Schaffner also claimed the local Tractor Supply store reported
between 100 and 150 Great Bend residents purchased a minimum of four chickens
this year, meaning a minimum of 400 to 600 chickens bought from Tractor
Supply in Great Bend. 
The city council will discuss the ordinance at their next meeting in June.&nbsp; &nbsp;

RUSELL COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a driver who was allegedly impaired and driving far over the speed limit on Mother's Day.

Just after 10a.m. Sunday, Troopers clocked a vehicle traveling on Interstate 70 in Russell County at 110mph, according to a media release.

KHP conducted a traffic stop near Center Township, 193rd Street and determined the driver identified as 41-year-old Carie M. Ketterer-Schaefer of Wentzville, Missouri, was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. She was arrested and booked into the Russell Co. Jail on a requested charges of DUI.&nbsp;

Where do cultural norms originate and are they good for people? That's one take on a protest scheduled for Great Bend Tuesday afternoon. Next Level Intactivism has teamed up with Bloodstained Men, a traveling protest group, to warn about the dangers of genital cutting. The Bloodstained Men will be stationed at 10th and McKinley wearing their trademark outfits from 2-4 p.m.

"They kind of have a little gimmick, said Intactivist Daniel Rold. "It's the bloodstained suit. What is it, it's a white outfit and they have red on the crotches. It's attention-grabbing, but it also indicates the wound that's inside our pants. We can't see it. This is part of the reason our culture is so lacking in education or awareness about this."

The group looks to bring awareness to genital cutting,&nbsp;which has lifelong implications for children who are too young to give consent to the surgery. The group stresses the evolutionary importance of the male anatomy and how altering it to meet cultural norms can have many unwanted side effects. 

"It's found in 5,488 mammal species, and they all live just fine with all their genitalia," Rold said. "If your rat and your hamster has a prepuce, then why can't a baby?"

The Great Bend stop Tuesday afternoon is one of 13 days the group has planned as part of the 2023 Great Plains Circumcision Crisis Protests. Other nearby stops include Hays, Dodge City, Garden City, and Wichita.

USD 428 school board special meeting agenda (5/16)

On Saturday, May 13 at approximately 9:37 p.m., officers with the Great Bend Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 2600 block of Washington Street for a traffic infraction. During the traffic stop, K9 Menta was utilized to conduct a free air sniff, where she alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics. 

Officers located several different illegal narcotics including marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine and non-prescribed prescription medications. The driver of the vehicle, Stephen Sprague, age 47, was placed under arrest for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of marijuana, possession of controlled substances, possession of opiates and possession of drug paraphernalia. Sprague was transported to the Barton County Jail where he was booked in lieu of a $300,000 bond.

Drug arrest made after traffic stop in Great Bend

Governor Laura Kelly announced that $30 million has been awarded to 18 recipients developing and improving tourism sites statewide. Funding was made available through the State Park Revitalization &amp; Investment in Notable Tourism (SPRINT) program launched by the Department of Commerce earlier this year. Included in the list is the Wilson Czech Opera House Corporation for $100,000. The funds will be used to get the fence down and become a notable tourist destination and drive additional traffic into Wilson.

Community leaders established a $600,000 goal to restore the Wilson Czech Opera House following a 2009 fire. The renovation will turn the opera house into an open-air theatre.

“A thriving tourism sector is critical for the Kansas economy,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“These grants enhance attractions that draw visitors to the state and showcase what makes Kansas a great place to live, work, and raise a family.”

The funds were designated by the Strengthening People and Revitalizing Kansas (SPARK) Executive Committee and approved by the State Finance Council to support capital projects that spur regional economic development in the tourism industry, one of the most affected industries by COVID-19.

“Increasing the appeal of our state parks and other tourist attractions will have a notable impact on local communities as well as the entire Kansas economy,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “The SPRINT awards support major projects that will attract new visitors across the state.”

Visitor spending, which generates a total annual economic impact of $11.2 billion in Kansas, has yet to return fully to pre-pandemic levels.

“Tourism is an important aspect of the Kansas economy, a sector in which 85,000 Kansans already are employed,”&nbsp;Senate President Ty Masterson said. “From parks to other attractions, Kansas has so much to offer those traveling and seeking to learn more about our state. The SPRINT grants will help ensure they remain vibrant for decades to come.”

SPRINT applications included investments in state parks, museums, convention and visitor bureaus, conference centers, performing arts centers, entertainment venues, and other tourism-focused businesses and tourism agencies. Recipients will use funds towards infrastructure enhancements, renovation and repair of facilities, general construction, public land development, recruitment costs for permanent and semi-permanent exhibits, and costs for national museum affiliation. Awardees will have two years to complete their projects and utilize all awarded funds.

“Our attractions and outdoor recreational opportunities benefit residents and visitors alike,”&nbsp;House Speaker Daniel Hawkins said. “The SPARK Committee wanted to enhance these sites and improve the quality of life in nearby towns and cities.”

Wilson Czech Opera House receives $100K to improve site

Five Barton instructors earned the Distinguished Instructor Award (DIA) for the 2022-2023 academic year for their outstanding efforts in the classroom and received their awards at Barton’s commencement ceremony Friday evening in the Barton Gymnasium.

Barton faculty recognized with Distinguished Instructor Awards

You don’t have to go to faraway countries – Greece, Cyprus or France – to benefit from a popular style of eating.

In fact, Sharolyn Jackson says the Mediterranean diet is more a concept than a place.

“It really is an eating style that can have any flavor profile ” said Jackson, the state leader of K-State Research and Extension’s popular Walk Kansas program, a team-based challenge that encourages people to walk, jog, run, bike, swim and move however they want to live more healthfully.

As part of this year’s Walk Kansas, which wraps ups up May 20, K-State Research and Extension offered a six-week pilot course on eating the Mediterranean way.

“The Med way is just healthy eating,” Jackson said. “But there are a lot of reasons why people feel kind of stuck when it comes to healthy eating. They think that it’s too hard, or too confusing. They get a lot of mixed messages from different places. And then they have this idea that it’s too expensive. They think it doesn’t taste good…or they don’t have enough time to prepare foods or plan what they’re going to eat. And maybe they have limited cooking skills.”

Instead, the Mediterranean eating style can be simple, and summarized in seven steps:

· Change your protein. Choose white meat poultry, like chicken and turkey, and lean cuts of meat. Eat fish and seafood at least 2-3 times per week. Replace some of the meat in your diet with plant proteins. Eat red meat less often and choose leaner cuts. Eliminate processed meats or greatly limit them.

· Swap your fats. Instead of butter, use olive oil or canola oil for cooking foods. Don’t eliminate fats; just choose better ones.

· Eat more vegetables. Three cups of vegetables, per day, are recommended. Choose dark greens, and a variety of colors.

· Eat more fruits. Get at least two servings/cups of fruit per day. Choose a variety of colors and include berries often.

· Snack on nuts and seeds. Stick to about three ounces – about three small handfuls – so that you’re not over-doing it on the calories. Avoid nuts and seeds that are candied, honey roasted or high in salt.

· Choose whole grains. Choose whole grains like oatmeal, quinoa, brown rice, popcorn and whole grain bread and pasta. Look for the word “whole” as the first item on the ingredient list.

· Rethink your sweets. Limit intake to no more than three servings per week of high-sugar foods and drinks. Fruit is a good substitute for high-sugar desserts.

These recommendations, don’t need to be abrupt changes. Move yourself slowly away (from your current eating habits) so that you feel like you’re not being deprived, but rather working toward making it a habit.

These recommendations come from a curriculum titled, Med Instead of meds, developed by North Carolina state professor and registered dietitian nutritionist Carolyn Dunn. Additional resources are available online at https://medinsteadofmeds.com.

Up to two-thirds of chronic diseases – like diabetes and heart disease – can be prevented by lifestyle changes, specifically diet and exercise. Research has shown the connection between lifestyle and chronic disease for some time, and it’s provided insight into some of the ways to move people in the right direction for making those lifestyle changes.

 </figure>You don’t have to go to faraway countries – Greece, Cyprus or France – to benefit from a popular style of eating.In fact, Sharolyn Jackson says the Mediterranean diet is more a concept than a place.“It really is an eating style that can have any flavor profile ” said Jackson, the state leader of K-State Research and Extension’s popular Walk Kansas program, a team-based challenge that encourages people to walk, jog, run, bike, swim and move however they want to live more healthfully.As part of this year’s Walk Kansas, which wraps ups up May 20, K-State Research and Extension offered a six-week pilot course on eating the Mediterranean way.“The Med way is just healthy eating,” Jackson said. “But there are a lot of reasons why people feel kind of stuck when it comes to healthy eating. They think that it’s too hard, or too confusing. They get a lot of mixed messages from different places. And then they have this idea that it’s too expensive. They think it doesn’t taste good…or they don’t have enough time to prepare foods or plan what they’re going to eat. And maybe they have limited cooking skills.”Instead, the Mediterranean eating style can be simple, and summarized in seven steps:· Change your protein. Choose white meat poultry, like chicken and turkey, and lean cuts of meat. Eat fish and seafood at least 2-3 times per week. Replace some of the meat in your diet with plant proteins. Eat red meat less often and choose leaner cuts. Eliminate processed meats or greatly limit them.· Swap your fats. Instead of butter, use olive oil or canola oil for cooking foods. Don’t eliminate fats; just choose better ones.· Eat more vegetables. Three cups of vegetables, per day, are recommended. Choose dark greens, and a variety of colors.· Eat more fruits. Get at least two servings/cups of fruit per day. Choose a variety of colors and include berries often.· Snack on nuts and seeds. Stick to about three ounces – about three small handfuls – so that you’re not over-doing it on the calories. Avoid nuts and seeds that are candied, honey roasted or high in salt.· Choose whole grains. Choose whole grains like oatmeal, quinoa, brown rice, popcorn and whole grain bread and pasta. Look for the word “whole” as the first item on the ingredient list.· Rethink your sweets. Limit intake to no more than three servings per week of high-sugar foods and drinks. Fruit is a good substitute for high-sugar desserts.These recommendations, don’t need to be abrupt changes. Move yourself slowly away (from your current eating habits) so that you feel like you’re not being deprived, but rather working toward making it a habit.These recommendations come from a curriculum titled, Med Instead of meds, developed by North Carolina state professor and registered dietitian nutritionist Carolyn Dunn. Additional resources are available online at https://medinsteadofmeds.com.Up to two-thirds of chronic diseases – like diabetes and heart disease – can be prevented by lifestyle changes, specifically diet and exercise. New mural for north side of Great Bend Chamber office

The state of Kansas has not voted for a Democratic presidential nominee since 1964. Since then, the Republican-favored margins are often quite sound. Joe Biden's 42 percent of the popular vote in the 2020 General Election marked the highest total for a Democratic candidate since 2008.

Still, the democratic process is important. In April, Gov. Laura Kelly signed a bill that schedules a presidential primary for March 19, 2024. Kansas has not held a presidential primary since 1992, leaving it up to the parties to determine which candidate would appear on the ballot for the General Election. The new primary election will feature races for the Democratic, Republican, and Libertarian parties.

Barton County Clerk Bev Schmeidler said there are still a lot of questions about the presidential preference primary, which could cost Barton County some $40,000. 

"The two major political parties must provide written notice prior to Dec. 1 of decision not to participate in the primary," she said. "So, they could opt out of having it."

With the primary, each county would pay costs for voting materials, election workers, and the use of some polling places. State-wide, officials have estimated the primary could cost between $4 million and $5 million. The state does plan to reimburse counties for direct expenses associated with the primary. Election officials in Barton County will also have to contend with hosting the election at a new location.

"With the courthouse being displaced, elections may be a little bit more challenging being out of our normal environment," Schmeidler said. "We're going to have to make due in a temporary location for our early voting."

In the last presidential preference primary in 1992, there were 47 total candidates. To get on the primary ballot in 2024, candidates would have to pay a $10,000 filing fee or secure 5,000 signatures from registered voters. 

Barton County may also have an additional election pertaining to the USD 112 Central Plains school district disorganization petition that was filed in Ellsworth County on May 9. That election, which would apply only to residents in that district, could be included in the Aug. 1 primary, if there is a primary election for local city and school races. No date has yet been set for that vote. The deadline to file as a candidate ahead of the primary is noon on June 1.

The splash pad opens Monday and the pool will follow suit in less than two
weeks in Hoisington. The city’s $3 million project constructed a splash pad,
along with a new pool last summer at Bicentennial Park.

Jonathan Mitchell said the splash pad opens Monday, May 15 and the pool will
open its gates May 27 with new features. "We have a new parking lot," said Mitchell. "It will be concrete so you don't have to worry about falling in the dirt parking lot. It's ADA accessible. We'll have handicap stalls and a ramp instead of the stairs we had last year." 
Last year, Hoisington struggled to find lifeguards, but this summer there
are 15 lifeguards hired and two new managers. The city is also offering season
pool passes to individuals or families who are not provided free admission to
the pool. A pass is $50 for an individual and $100 for a family pass. If interested, contact the city office at 620-653-4125.

Ashton Ensley of Great Bend, Kayden Smith of Topeka, and Keeley Wolf of Hoisington were named Barton Community College’s 2023 Outstanding Graduates. Vice President of Student Services Angie Maddy recognized them as part of Barton’s commencement on Friday.

Ensley completed his associate in science degree.&nbsp; He is the son of Trae Ensley of Great Bend and Dawn Richardson of Lawrence. Ensley was a member of the Barton eSports team and holds a piece of three NJCAAE national championships because of his career with Barton. He is one of the only three-time Academic All-Americans in NJCAAE history. In addition to his eSports success, he was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society at Barton as well.&nbsp;

Smith completed her associate in arts degree. She is the daughter of Courtney and Kye Smith of Topeka. During her Barton career, Kayden was a member of the softball team, participated in Christian Challenge, and served on the leadership board for Community Student Organization/SPARK. She will transfer to Emporia State University and continue her education in the field of criminal justice.&nbsp; Her long-term educational and career plans are to complete a master’s degree and eventually work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.&nbsp;

Wolf completed her associate in science degree.&nbsp; She is the daughter of Jamie Wolf of Great Bend and the late Shane Wolf.&nbsp; During her Barton career, she was a member of the 2023 Region VI Champion women’s basketball team and participated in the STEM Buddies Program. She will continue her education at Fort Hays State University and work toward her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Her future career goals include becoming a kindergarten teacher and a basketball coach.

The saying “April showers bring May flowers” is what runs through my mind every spring. It’s a saying that has held true for almost every year I have lived on our Kansas farm.&nbsp; &nbsp; Like clockwork, the crocus and daffodils are the first to appear followed by my tulips, lilacs and peonies. Add in the fruit trees blooming and you have a beautiful spring floral assortment.&nbsp; &nbsp; Generally, by the time my peonies and lilacs bloom, I can’t help but attempt to capture the aromas and beauty by arranging cuttings of these flowers into a table-top display to be enjoyed in my kitchen as a precursor of June’s wheat harvest. &nbsp; However, this year’s blooms never went on display to be enjoyed at my kitchen table. The sweet smells from one of my lilacs have been enjoyed only when I walk up to the bush and bring my nose close to the smaller-than-normal white blooms. &nbsp; I’m still waiting on my peonies to appear. Like normal, the plant has grown and buds have formed; but as I’ve kept watch over this plant anticipating its May bloom, I’ve been left wondering if we’ve somehow missed the last step and the flowers will not come this year. &nbsp; Perhaps it is just a little late to bloom this year, but I can’t help but wonder if the delay of my peonies and stunted lilacs are signs of what our wheat harvest will look like. &nbsp; It’s no secret that we experienced an incredibly dry 2022. The drought stressed our crops, stressed our water sources and stressed us. We had hoped for a wet winter, but instead it remained mild. It feels as if the first five months of 2023 is a continuation of last year’s drought.&nbsp; &nbsp; The ponds in our pastures, which would normally be filled by now, are totally dry. We’ve been watching our wheat slowly grow. We hesitated to begin the spring planting of our fall crops in hopes it would rain; and when we did begin planting, we planted the seeds deeper than we’ve ever planted them to ensure they had some moisture to begin their growth.&nbsp; &nbsp; My husband has always half-joked that when a farmer prays for rain, there’s more people praying for the opposite. He’s probably right. After all, people have parades, picnics, car shows, golf outings, garage sales, field trips and weekend plans that call for nice, sunny days to be enjoyed in the spring.&nbsp; &nbsp; Even though my prayers for rain might be outnumbered, I will continue to pray for it multiple times daily.&nbsp; &nbsp; I generally keep my daily prayers between God and myself, but like many other farmers, I’m openly calling for others to join me in our request. &nbsp; Please Lord, let it rain.
