Community Coordinator Christina Hayes said that begins with a noon deadline for the Explore Great Bend contest.

"Of course, it's the last day to participate in the $1,000 to Explore Great Bend," she said. "You can go register to win in each of the participating stores. That's also on Black Friday. As we encourage you to shop local first, we ask that go register to win but also see what our wonderful stores have to offer."

The contest began Nov. 4 with the chance to register on each Saturday and Black Friday only. Three winners will be selected for prizes of $1,000, $500, and $250, and winners must be present after the parade Saturday evening to win.

Dilly &amp; Doc Creative Studio will hold its pop-up market at 1119 Main Street and the neighboring bingo building from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. There are at least 250 boxes for the famous Great Bend Cookie Contest. Due to demand, the price has increased from $5 to $10. Participants can register for a prize to be given away by each participating business. Boxes and bracelets can be purchased at Rosewood Furniture Gallery, 16th and Main in downtown Great Bend. That contest runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

The Home for the Holidays Lighted Parade begins at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and will travel down Main Street to Jack Kilby Square. Mayor Cody Schmidt and Santa will light the Christmas tree at 6:15, and Santa will be available at his house beginning at 6:30 p.m. There will be lots of free food and refreshments and more ways to win.

"As the cookie contest winners are being announced, we will have a fun little game where we go randomly up to people and we ask them what the next line of a Christmas carol is," Hayes said. "We've done this before randomly at a festival, and people do not know the words!"

Progress continues on the new Ellinwood Hospital &amp; Clinic on the west edge of the city. Ellinwood Hospital Foundation Director Kristy Rupe said much of the work on the outside is done ahead of the cold months but plenty of work will be going on inside. While construction continues, the foundation is gearing up for its biggest fundraiser of the year: the Annual Christmas Gala on Saturday, Dec. 9 at the St. Joseph Parish Center in Ellinwood.

"Doors open at 5:30," Rupe said. "There's a nice social hour. The silent auctions are going to be going all through the evening. We're shaking it up a bit. It's going to be an open bar. It's a full-course catered meal."

The fan-favorite honey-pecan chicken returns for dinner at 7, and there will be live music during the meal as Ellinwood High School's Mystic Blues perform. Mike Niedens will begin the live auction at 8 p.m. Along with the silent and live auction, the foundation is selling $5 raffle tickets for a gift card bouquet worth approximately $500 in gift cards. Mistletoe Money also returns as a fan favorite.

"We only have 50 tickets we're selling of those," said Rupe. "If we call your number, one of 50, you get $500 to spend during the live auction."

Tickets on sale for Ellinwood Hospital Foundation's Annual Christmas Gala

Travis Straub's Vocational Technology Club (VTC) at Great Bend High School was on its way to being an electric car powerhouse. The Panthers won state championships in 2018 and 2019, and then-student Tristen Milligan had rewired the car for a successful 2020 season. Then COVID-19 hit. With two years of no racing, Straub lost all of his racers and all of his students with the ability to train future students. This year, 13 GBHS students have joined the after-school club to restart the program.

"I was starting from scratch," Straub said. "I'm basically trying to train multiple kids how this thing goes together, how you take it back apart, figure out the brake system, the electrical system, and also on race day, how to race and how to prepare for the race."

Straub, the woodworking instructor at GBHS, started the VTC in 2006. Wheatland Electric had used students to build a car and asked Straub to build and race electric cars against other schools. A new car can take hundreds of hours to build from scratch, and the club purchased its current car from La Crosse High School and rewired it.

Schools compete in a practice-type race each fall against about a dozen Kansas teams, as well as cars from Missouri and Nebraska. Straub took six of his club members to Frontier Park in Hays for this autumn's race. That track features mostly smooth asphalt and charts in at just longer than a mile. The team that completes the most laps in an hour wins. Sophomore Josh Manning did the driving.

"It's pretty fun," he said. "You don't realize how quick you're going in the car. I was told after the race I did 45 or 46 laps. It didn't feel like that. It felt like I did 10 or 20."

Much preparation goes into each race. The team members scout the track for potholes and tricky turns. They spread out during the race as a makeshift pit crew with Straub patrolling in his golf cart should an emergency arise.

"We have to get the batteries in," said Straub. "We're also charging the batteries before the race. We're checking every nut and bolt to make sure everything is tight."

To level the playing field, the cars must transport 180 pounds. For a lightweight like Manning, that meant placing a 35-pound weight on the front of the car, more weight in the back, and some ankle weights spread around inside the car.

The real racing season takes place in the spring with a series of three races. The best finishes, two out of those three, will go on to compete for a state championship. Teams must also write a paper about the history and evolution of their car.

Juniors Alex Allen and Matthew Williams have been instrumental in keeping the current car up and running. Both plan to use the knowledge gained from the club down the road.

"I want to get some sort of degree in engineering, cars, and such, and one day I hope to be a mechanic," said Allen, "so I figured this would be a good way to learn a little bit of that."

"I want to go into some type of engineering degree, and I figured this was a good way to get it kickstarted," Williams said.

As one might expect in a race, there are always issues. In the fall run in Hays, a Kansas City team rolled up on the back of the Great Bend car. "They can take a hit," said Williams. "During the race, a car came up and hit the back of the tire and made it all wonky. It continued to run another 20 laps without any problems."

Straub selects the race-day driver off experience and other qualifiers, but each member of the team has driven the car in practice runs at the skate park.

"Of course, it broke down during the practice race, which was a good thing, actually, instead of being the actual race," Straub said. "We were able to do some problem-solving while we were there and see what was going on."

Using aerodynamics and just three wheels instead of four to minimize ground resistance, the current car has gone a maximum of 53 laps on a course with a max speed of over 40 miles per hour.

"We've had this car up to 43 miles an hour, depending on how it's geared and the type of track we're running," said Straub. "When you're three inches off the ground, you feel like you're doing 90.

"That's one of the amazing things about this. These are bicycle parts we're putting on a vehicle that weighs a couple hundred pounds going up to 40 miles per hour. Bicycles aren't designed to do that at at that kind of weight and speed. We're pushing the limits on bicycle parts."

GBHS Vocational Tech Club gearing up for spring race season

3A, 2A, 1A &amp; 6-Player will kickoff at Noon.

KSHSAA announces time changes for Saturday Championship games due to weather

With a perfect 12-0 record heading into Saturday's Class 2A State Championship Football game in Salina, Hoisington High School Coach Zach Baird has relied on a number of kids to make plays this season. The biggest constant all year has been senior quarterback Tony Moore. Also a member of the Cardinal varsity baseball and basketball teams for three years, Moore is cementing an even bigger legacy on the gridiron.

"Most of my athleticism probably came from my parents and my grandma," he said. "My grandma says I actually got all my athleticism from her. My dad played football at K-State, and my family has been really athletic on my mom's side at whatever they do."

Moore's transition to quarterback may be an improbable one. He played on the offensive line as a seventh grader, then moved to the backfield in the eighth grade.

"It was a complete change of pace in the game," he said. "I wouldn't change it for the world, but in my opinion, I think O-line is way harder than what I have to do now. Those guys have a lot to do. Even back in middle school, it was a lot for me to comprehend. They're a big asset of the game and they do a lot for us. I think they're probably the most important part of the team."

The 2021 Cardinal football team finished the season at 8-2. Moore saw limited time under center as a sophomore, completing his one pass for 23 yards and rushing for 479 yards and three touchdowns on 40 carries. But he suffered a big setback in a 36-6 Homecoming win against Minneapolis in week five of the season.

"We were running our rocket toss to the right," he recalled. There was a lot of open space so I started really running hard, and some guy hip-drop tackled me. Something just popped. I didn't really recognize it until after the game. I couldn't bend my knee."

Moore has recovered from the meniscus tear and other injuries. In 2022, he quarterbacked the Cardinals to an 8-3 season. He threw for 656 yards on 37-of-61 passing with 11 touchdowns and two interceptions. He also led the team with 992 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 89 carries. His two interceptions on defense tied for the team lead, and his 42 tackles were fourth on the squad.

Then came his historic senior season. Moore is the first Cardinal quarterback in well over a decade to throw for more than 1,000 yards. He led the top offense in Class 2A, and Hoisington reached the state championship game by defeating two of the other four undefeated teams left in the classification.

Of course, we wanted to win a state championship. You can say it out loud, but to actually go ahead and go do it is a whole other thing."

Moore has completed 66 of his 113 pass attempts this season for 1,453 yards with 19 touchdowns and two interceptions. That brings his two-year total to 2,109 passing yards with 30 touchdowns to just four picks. He's rushed for another 838 yards and eight touchdowns this season.

Winning a state title will require a win against the other unbeaten team left in Class 2A. Nehama Central enters Saturday's game as the defending 2A champion. The Thunder have excelled on both sides of the ball, allowing just six points in the first nine weeks of the season. Sophomore quarterback Carter Hajek has rushed for 2,165 yards and 39 touchdowns, and thrown for 931 yards with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions.

"We're going to have to be pretty good," Moore said. "We're going to have to play offensively like we did against Southeast of Saline because these guys are obviously good. It's the last two teams in 2A. We're going to have to execute and be able to make plays with and without the ball. Our dudes are just going to have to be better than their dudes."

 </figure>By MIKE COURSON Great Bend PostWith a perfect 12-0 record heading into Saturday's Class 2A State Championship Football game in Salina, Hoisington High School Coach Zach Baird has relied on a number of kids to make plays this season. The biggest constant all year has been senior quarterback Tony Moore. Also a member of the Cardinal varsity baseball and basketball teams for three years, Moore is cementing an even bigger legacy on the gridiron."Most of my athleticism probably came from my parents and my grandma," he said. "My grandma says I actually got all my athleticism from her. My dad played football at K-State, and my family has been really athletic on my mom's side at whatever they do."Moore's transition to quarterback may be an improbable one. He played on the offensive line as a seventh grader, then moved to the backfield in the eighth grade.<figure>

 </figure>"It was a complete change of pace in the game," he said. "I wouldn't change it for the world, but in my opinion, I think O-line is way harder than what I have to do now. Those guys have a lot to do. Even back in middle school, it was a lot for me to comprehend. They're a big asset of the game and they do a lot for us. I think they're probably the most important part of the team."The 2021 Cardinal football team finished the season at 8-2. Moore saw limited time under center as a sophomore, completing his one pass for 23 yards and rushing for 479 yards and three touchdowns on 40 carries. But he suffered a big setback in a 36-6 Homecoming win against Minneapolis in week five of the season."We were running our rocket toss to the right," he recalled. There was a lot of open space so I started really running hard, and some guy hip-drop tackled me. Something just popped. I didn't really recognize it until after the game. I couldn't bend my knee."Moore has recovered from the meniscus tear and other injuries. In 2022, he quarterbacked the Cardinals to an 8-3 season. He threw for 656 yards on 37-of-61 passing with 11 touchdowns and two interceptions. He also led the team with 992 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 89 carries. His two interceptions on defense tied for the team lead, and his 42 tackles were fourth on the squad.Then came his historic senior season. Moore is the first Cardinal quarterback in well over a decade to throw for more than 1,000 yards. place or getting scheduled again. One of the big events for children is Santa’s
Workshop, hosted by the Great Bend Recreation Commission. Rec staff and other
volunteers transform the City Auditorium, 1214 Stone Street, into the North
Pole and provide plenty of activities, games and giveaways.

"We are bringing Happy Faces Entertainment from Kansas City," said Fitzpatrick. They'll have a gentleman walking around performing comedian-like entertainment. Also, Olaf will be walking around."

Santa’s Workshop will take place on Dec. 4 from 6 p.m. - 8
p.m. and marks the 27th year for the event. Fitzpatrick starts organizing
the event in June and collects 10,000 pieces of candy, 700 sugar cookies from
Dillons, 700 balloons and roughly 900 “fish pond” gifts to hand out.

Auditorium the Sunday before the event. Great Bend High School students assist

Larned Chamber giving away 'Hams for the Holidays'

For the last couple of years, the City of Great Bend has been approving
a contract with their veterinarian used for the animals at the Great Bend Brit
Spaugh Zoo. Dr. Mike Malone, with Animal Care Hospital, has handled the zoo’s
vet needs for 43 years. 

Knowing that Malone is considering retiring in the near
future, City Administrator Brandon Anderson recommended a one-year contract for
Malone’s services at the zoo.


"I do think Dr. Malone has done a good job and stayed within the budget," said Anderson. "I know this is an item in the future we probably need to figure out a better way of sourcing this out, possibly hire a contract vet or bidding this out. I would definitely want to look to bid this out in a longer-term situation."

Anderson reached out to another local veterinarian whom mentioned his vets
could also handle the work. The Great Bend City Council approved the one-year
contract agreement with Malone. 

Zoo Curator Ashley Burdick said both Malone and Dr.
Jackie Corhert have a great relationship with zoo staff and the animals.


"There's Dr. Malone and also Dr. Jackie Corhert comes out a lot too," said Burdick. "With the Clouded Leopards, we had an injury where the female was pulling out sutures. Dr. Jackie came in at 2 a.m. and helped us do a surgery. We do really love them. They do a great job."

The 2024 budget allocates $110,000 to medical and lab services at the zoo.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Now through Dec. 3, people can tour the decorated Christmas Windows in downtown Great Bend and vote for their favorite. In its fourth season, the Christmas Window Decorating Contest is offering $500 for the “People’s Choice Award.”

Ballots and a voting box are available in front of Rosewood Foundation Office, 1213 Main Street, Great Bend, adjacent to Rosewood Bargain Barn. Voters must sign a confidential ballot, allowing one vote per person. The request by organizers is to “Keep it Fun and Fair!”

Boundaries for the window-decorating contest cover 10th to 18th Streets, and from Williams to Kansas Streets in Great Bend. There are 20 windows to vote on this season, all of them marked by a “Christmas Window Decorating Contest” sign in the window. The window locations are also listed on the backs of the voting ballots.

As with the past three holiday seasons, an anonymous donor is providing $3,000 in prize money to promote the Christmas Window Decorating Contest in downtown Great Bend. The first two categories of “Best Window Awards” will be selected by a panel of decorating professionals. “Judges 1st Place” will receive $1,500, and “Judges 2nd Place” will receive $1,000. The third prize of $500 is the “People’s Choice” award, which allows the public to choose their ‘Best Christmas Window’ by popular vote.

Christmas Window Decorating Contest winners will be announced on Dec. 5.

Great Bend Christmas Window Contest voting through Dec. 3

The Central Kansas Christian Basketball League (CKCBL) launched its first basketball season with four committed teams. The four teams that have joined the league are Central Kansas Christian Academy (CKCA), Holy Family, Chase, and Stafford. There are 14 total regular season games that will be conducted between the four teams, and the season will conclude with an end-of-season tournament hosted at CKCA on December 9th and 10th.

“We are beyond blessed and grateful for this vision to finally come to light,” said CKCBL President and CKCA Head Coach, Ethan Thomas. “My wife, Ashlie, and I have a huge passion for sports and wanted to bring our love of basketball to a younger age group. We see the need in our community for our youth to be involved in sports at a younger age, not only to keep them active and grow their skills at an earlier age, but also to direct and guide them in making good decisions and being accountable to their teammates, coaches, and school.”

A total of 21 local sponsors donated to this season’s league. Businesses or individual donors were able to select between three different package levels.&nbsp;

“We are absolutely thrilled at the amount of support that the community has already shown toward the league,” Thomas said. “To see the community and our sponsors jump on board with this idea and being willing to support and cheer us on is a feeling we cannot quite describe. We cannot thank everyone enough for their time, donations, and prayers to help us get this league up and going.”

The CKCBL is made up of four teams this season, with other teams and schools already in contact wanting to learn more about next year’s league. Holy Family and CKCA played a total of five games last year and added Chase and Stafford to the list of this season’s teams. The team and league representatives include:

Each game will be formatted with 4 six-minute quarters and other standard rules that would be followed by in middle school and high school sports. Some game formatting accommodations have been adapted for the “B” teams. Weekday games will tip off at 4:30 PM, and weekend games are broken out into AM and PM games to accommodate multiple teams playing on the same day. Weekend AM games will tip-off at 9:00 AM and PM games will tip-off at 2:00 PM. All hosting teams will provide concession stands, with profits going toward their team Booster Club. Cheerleading is also an option for each school if desired.

“There are so many life objectives that our athletes can take away from this league,” Thomas said. “They will be working on the fundamentals of basketball and cheer, getting the live playing time that they typically wouldn’t be getting until middle school, working on team building and communication skills, building confidence within themselves, and most importantly we get the opportunity to tell all of these children about Jesus Christ.”

After a rapid drop in temperature from warm fall weather in Kansas, trees are keeping their leaves longer. Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini said this is called marcescence. &nbsp;

“Marcescence is defined by leaves that wither but do not detach from the plant,” Domenghini said. “When the temperature drops quickly, as we have experienced this fall, many trees didn’t have time to develop an abscission layer at the base of each leaf. The abscission layer is what separates the leaf from the tree and prompts it to fall to the ground.”&nbsp;

Marcescence doesn’t harm the tree but may indicate the tree has some damage. The temperature change can affect the tissues beneath the bark, causing the tree to not receive adequate food necessary for survival.&nbsp;

The xylem — the structure in the tree that carries water from the soil throughout the plant — is not damaged and will help the tree continue to maintain life, Domenghini adds. &nbsp;

“If you are seeing trees with marcescence, nothing needs to be done now except prevent further stress,” she said.&nbsp;

Domenghini recommends further preventing stress by keeping the soil moist around trees entering winter. &nbsp;

“Without knowing the extent of the damage to the tree tissue, it is impossible to know what the end result will be, but if only a small portion of the tissue was killed the tree may still recover,” she said. “Trees with excessive internal damage will typically show symptoms the summer after the damage occurred.”&nbsp;

BOOR: Tending to trees going into winter

The Great Bend City Council approved the public hearings for three unsafe
and dangerous structures at Monday’s meeting. The building inspector wrote
letters outlining safety concerns on each of the properties. 

Great Bend
Assistant City Administrator Logan Burns presented the first structure at 750
Jefferson Street, the old Price Trucking building.


"The overhead door opening where the jam is broken out from the block," said Burns. "The roof structure is open. There are broken windows. You'll see that areas are deteriorating and allow moisture to get inside, and that's only going to get worse."

Also included on the list was 1622 19th Street. The 19th
Street property has a detached garage with overhead door damage and roof
structure exposure. Finally, the structure at 2421 12th Street
showed leaning walls, deteriorating materials and roof exposure.


Public hearing dates for all three properties were set for Jan. 15,
2024 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. Owners have until then to repair the structures
or make their case to the governing body before the council votes to demolish
the buildings.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Unsafe structures on 12th, 19th and Jefferson streets in Great Bend

Central Kansas Christian Academy, a nonprofit Christian school in Great Bend, is announcing a Legacy Campaign encouraging donors to invest in the next generation.

“We are excited about what God has done and look forward to our future here at CKCA,” Principal Sherry Pruter said.

Parent Mallory Damon said, “I believe it was God’s hand that brought my son to this school,” Damon said. “God knew that this could lead to building a solid church foundation.”

This Legacy fund helps bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of providing a Christ-centered education. The school is launching this Legacy Campaign to help provide scholarships, increase security measures, support programs, and provide additional teacher training. 

The goal is to raise $100,000 for the fund before Jan. 1, 2024. Sponsors donating $100 or more will be honored on the CKCA Donor Wall.

Central KS Christian Academy launches Legacy Campaign

While construction was going on this summer on the new Great Bend
Justice Center, the expected move-in date for the police department and
municipal court staff was sometime in September. An open house ceremony was
originally scheduled for early October and then rescheduled to Oct. 20 in order for the nearly $9 million facility to be complete. 

More than a month
has passed since the open house and yet the police department has yet to move
into their new home. City Administrator Brandon Anderson said the vestibule doors
need to be fixed and there is a drainage issue on the north side of the
building located at the intersection of 12th Street and Baker
Avenue.


"That's the area where there's the most handicap parking to the public, so that's a concern," said Anderson. "We've had conversations back and forth. We've had an independent surveyor come in and run some points for our architect. They're trying to turn that around as soon as possible."

The City of Great Bend has worked with GLMV Architecture and McCownGordon Construction on the project.

Anderson noted getting this project completed has been itching at him for a
while and they have pressed the contractor and architect to finish the final
exterior punch list. Anderson was hopeful the issues would be resolved by
Nov. 27.


"Obviously, all of us want to get moved in to that nice facility, but we want to make sure it's functionable before we turn it over from the contractor," said Anderson.

The 20,100-square-foot facility is mostly being paid for by the .10% sales tax
increase approved in 2021.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Issues keep Great Bend Police from moving into new facility

Barton County announced Wednesday morning that Marissa Woodmansee will serve as interim director of Central Kansas Community Corrections.&nbsp;

"We appreciate her willingness to take on this role and have full confidence that she will do a great job in this transition period," said County Administrator Matt Patzner.

The move comes after the county confirmed that Director Amy Boxberger and another CKCC employee were no longer county employees. Woodmansee is the current director at Juvenile Services.

Central Kansas Community Corrections serves the 20th Judicial District in Barton, Ellsworth, Rice, Russell, and Stafford counties.
