A tradition for many around the state of Kansas it to begin the New Year with a little exercise. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has several first-day hiking events planned for Monday, Jan. 1.

Glen Elder State Park between Cawker City and Glen Elder will host a hike from 9 a.m. to noon. The 3-mile hike begins at the Waconda Trail. A 2-mile walk at the Flint Hills Trail-Council Grove Trailhead goes from 9-11 a.m. The walk at Webster State Park northwest of Plainville runs from 10 a.m. to noon. A limited number of T-shirts are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, and hot chocolate and hot dogs will be provided after the hike. Lake Milford near Manhattan will host a 2.18-mile walk from 1-3p.m. That event takes place on the Crystal Trail.
