The election season is coming fast. To prepare the League of Women Voters of Great Bend- Barton County is partnering with the Great Bend Senior Center and the Chamber of Commerce. The team is arranging a platform for contested races for the Aug. 6, 2024, Primary election. Both forums will take place at the Great Bend Senior Center on 2005 Kansas Ave. in Great Bend. Doors will open at 6:30 pm and the forums will start at 7 pm.

July 18 is the date for the Barton County candidates’ forum. Eight (8) candidates are running for four positions: County Clerk, County Register of Deeds, City Counsel/Ward 1, and the Ellinwood Hospital District.

July 25 is the date for the Federal/State candidates’ forum. Twelve (12) candidates are running for five positions: Congress/District 1, State Senate/District 33, State House of Representatives/District 112 &amp; District 113, and District Judge/District 20.

The public is welcome to attend, listen to the candidates' responses to pre-determined questions, and visit with them when the questions are concluded. Light refreshments will be served.

Taylen Morales is not your typical football kicker. Entering his junior year at Hoisington High School, Morales wrestled in the state tournament in February and medaled in the pole vault at the state track and field meet in May. His attention has again turned to his other sport: football. Morales recently attended the Kohl's Kicking Camp in Littleton, Colo. As one of the top three kickers at that camp, he's been invited to a national kicking showcase in Gatlinburg, Tenn. where he can demonstrate his talents to recruiters from around the world.

"I ended up doing pretty well if they decided to invite me to Tennessee," Morales said. "It was a surprise because I didn't know until they told me to stay after the last day."

Morales played soccer before playing in the Pride of Kansas Football League. Handling kicking duties was a natural transition.

"I kicked one day and my coach had me play it," said Morales. "When I started kicking, it just carried throughout, and I ended up becoming better than I thought I would."

Morales made 36 of his 42 point-after attempts last season, and was 44 of 49 the year before that. He booted through a 38-yard field goal as a freshman. With Hoisington's high-powered offense putting plenty of points on the board, Morales averaged 45 yards a kick on 60 kickoffs in last year's state runner-up season. He also had 42 tackles for the Cardinal defense and ran the ball 27 times for 182 yards. The National Invitational Scholarship Camp in Tennessee July 20-21 will be all about the kicking.

"I'm looking to show that I've improved and that I'm good enough to maybe be in the eyes of some colleges," Morales said. "That's kind of my main goal."

Three former Kohl's kickers were selected in the most recent NFL Draft, and 36 of the last 46 drafted specialists over the past decade have been Kohl's kickers, including Chief's kicker Harrison Butker and former Colts kicker Pat McAfee.

With the addition of the Ninja Course and rock wall, you can make the
argument that the My Backyard Playground is the premiere playground in Great
Bend. 

Positioned next to the Activity Center on 18th Street, the
playground has no restroom facility during the evening hours and weekends when the
Activity Center is closed. Great Bend Recreation Commission Executive Director
Chris Umphres said the Rec has tried a portable toilet onsite but are moving
forward with getting bids to install a permanent restroom facility at the playground.


"We want it metal wrapped or painted to match the building," said Umphres. "There will be a drinking fountain off to the side of that as well. We have the fountain in the back of the playground but this will add another up front, maybe eliminating the traffic coming in and out of the Activity Center for a drink."

The Great Bend Rec Board approved a motion to get bid specifications from
contractors for a 10' x 20' restroom. The facility will include heat for
the winter but no air conditioning.


The restroom is proposed to be located on the southwest corner of the lot as
you first walk into the playground.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Have you ever been curious about canning meat? Is it safe? How do I do it safely? Why would I want to can meat?

Canning is a great method to preserve and extend shelf life for many types of foods, including meat products. Using safe preparation and storage practices allows for anyone to store nutritious, high-quality protein.

Before joining K-State Research and Extension I had done a little canning but mostly just trying to preserve garden produce. After taking a professional development canning class specifically for Extension Agents, I learned even more about canning and also how to can meat. I found canning meat a great skill to have in the kitchen. Why? You may ask…..

Well, canning meat can be an easy way to get supper on the table. As a busy, working wife and mother I’m often struggling at the end of the day to come up with yet another meal my family will eat. I’m tired and hungry. I need something fast and easy! When you have canned meat on the shelf, all you have to do is open the can, warm it up and add some vegetables or grains to make a fast meal.

Canning meat can also be healthy. Sometimes, when you purchase canned meat there maybe be unwanted ingredients. When you preserve the meat yourself you know exactly what is in there and can control the amount of ingredients you want in your food, for example, the amount of salt.

When preserving meat you can use inexpensive cuts of meat and they turn out tender and tasty! Canning can be a way to save money on your animal-based protein. Yes, there is some expense if needing to purchase equipment but hopefully those will be one-time expense that you can use for many years.

Next, canning may be another way to store food. Are you running out of freezer space? This can be a great way to free up that space by canning your meat.

Do you hunt or fish? You can also can game meat and fish! Canning wild game and fish is another way to preserve your protein well past the hunting and fishing season.

Finally, making it a social affair and doing with other people such as family and friends can make the work turn into a fun day. This can also help to minimize costs if you are able to preserve food with others. I always say, “Canning is like exercise, it is much more fun doing with others!”

If you are curious and would like to learn more, Karen Blakeslee, K-State Research and Extension Rapid Response Coordinator and food scientist will be in Hays to hold a meat canning workshop on August 7, 2024 from 1-5pm at the First United Methodist Church, 305 W. 7th St. We will preserve beef and chicken at the workshop, using both raw and hot pack methods. All supplies will be provided. Karen will include

information on the science and history behind food preservation, safe pressure canning of all types of meat, and tips on freezing and dehydrating. Cost: $35

The care team at Convenient Care Walk-In Clinic at St. Rose Medical Pavilion in Great Bend welcomes Whitney Hickert, family practice-certified advanced practice registered nurse, to The University of Kansas Health System.

Hickert earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Tabor College in Kansas, and her Master of Science in Nursing, Nurse Practitioner, at Spring Arbor University in Spring Arbor, Michigan.

She enjoys family practice and walk-in care because it allows her to work with people of all ages and treat a broad array of health concerns.

Nurse practitioner joins convenient care team in Great Bend

Barton Community College Vice President of Administration Mark Dean
presented two budget options at Tuesday’s Board of Trustees study session. The
biggest difference between the two was that one provided a 5% increase to the
salary budget to keep up with the market value and the other increases the
salary budget by 2.5%. 

Last year, the board approved a budget that anticipated
collecting $506,000 more in tax dollars. For the 2025 budget, both options
intend to remain revenue neutral, meaning the college will collect the same
amount of tax dollars. 

Despite a budget that plans for a $394,823 deficit, Dean
recommended the budget containing a 5% bump in the salary fund.


"How long did we fight to get our employees to market value?" asked Dean. "A long time. We had 68 fulltime positions open in May of 2022. We had six or seven the following May after the board pulled everything up to market value. It was a huge step to do that. We're going to be playing catchup next year. We're going to see positions that are going to be sitting out there unfilled. That's my opinion."

By meeting the Revenue Neutral Rate (RNR), Barton anticipates collecting
$9,574,623 in tax dollars in the 2025 budget with a 28.634 mill levy. 

In order
to provide the 5% salary budget increase, the budget option includes a
reduction of 11 fulltime positions and approximately $650,000 in operational
budget reductions.


"I asked for positions to begin with," said Dean. "Some departments said absolutely not, we can't give up a position but we can give up this much in operational budget. We cut out some of their professional development. We cut out student employment for a portion of that."

Along with local tax dollars, the fiscal year 2025 budget anticipates revenue
of $12 million from tuition and $10 million in state aid.


The trustees will approve a budget at the next meeting on July 23.&nbsp;

 </figure>By meeting the Revenue Neutral Rate (RNR), Barton anticipates collecting
$9,574,623 in tax dollars in the 2025 budget with a 28.634 mill levy. In order
to provide the 5% salary budget increase, the budget option includes a
reduction of 11 fulltime positions and approximately $650,000 in operational
budget reductions.
"I asked for positions to begin with," said Dean. "Some departments said absolutely not, we can't give up a position but we can give up this much in operational budget. We cut out some of their professional development. We cut out student employment for a portion of that."Along with local tax dollars, the fiscal year 2025 budget anticipates revenue
of $12 million from tuition and $10 million in state aid.

Barton CC intends to remain revenue neutral, not raising taxes

This is day 13 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

With harvest down to the final few days, this will be the last report for the 2024 Kansas wheat harvest. Rain delays continue to stretch out the season, but producers welcome the moisture as they turn their attention to planting fall crops and managing the weeds coming up rapidly in wheat stubble.

Moisture over the weekend continues to prevent harvest from wrapping up in northwest Kansas, but no one is complaining about the beneficial moisture for fall crops, according to Jeanne Falk Jones, Multi-County agronomist with the Northwest Research-Extension Center in Colby.&nbsp;

Area producers started test cutting after Father’s Day and harvest kicked into full gear the following weekend. The end of harvest is now in sight - maybe three days more if the skies stay clear. This last push feels more like last year’s harvest - foggy mornings and tough wheat that can’t be cut until late in the day.&nbsp;

Yields are all over the board - from 20 to 100 bushels per acre - across the northwest region, not surprising given the challenges to get stands established last fall. Weather during the grain fill period was much more favorable with moisture, fewer triple-digit days and especially cooler night temperatures.&nbsp;

As a result, Falk-Jones reported average test weights between 58 to 62 pounds per bushel and proteins between 9 and 11.5 percent, depending on field fertility and conditions during grain fill.&nbsp;

“Everybody is pleasantly surprised on how good our wheat has been,” she said, adding that the wheat looked pretty tough for the majority of the growing season. “Now, not every field has been that way.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Falk-Jones did investigate a fair amount of wheat disease this year, including Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus, Triticum mosaic and High Plains disease, all of which are transmitted by the wheat curl mite. She sent several samples off to the diagnostic labs in Manhattan to determine which virus was on the rise after seeing the characteristic yellow leaves in fields planted to varieties with decent resistance to WSMV. The result was a bit of uptake in Triticum mosaic. The earlier the infection of viral disease, the more impacts on yields, but a good number of fields already had yield potential set when symptoms showed at heading.&nbsp;

She attributes the uptick in disease pressure to severe hail last year after kernels were formed. As a result, there were more shattered kernels in the field and continual flushes of volunteer wheat after catching little rain showers. While folks tried hard to control volunteer wheat, even kernels left in wheels tracks were enough to harbor the disease vector - wheat curl mites - over the fall.

In Sherman County, Brian Linin has about five or six days left to cut near Goodland, after starting harvest on June 26 - three to five days earlier than normal and three weeks earlier than last year.&nbsp;

Expectations were low after the wheat did not have good stand last fall, thinking this year would be a repeat of the last. Blowing fields this spring added to the anticipated disappointment. Linin noted he went ahead and applied fungicide and did not see a lot of rust or Wheat Streak Mosaic virus, but controlling volunteer wheat will be essential to prevent the spread into next year’s crop.&nbsp;

While the cooler days and nights during grainfill helped the wheat do better than expected, this year will still be about 20 percent below an average yield. Linin reported yields on dryland wheat ranging from 30 to 70 bushels per acre, with most in the 40s. Test weights were averaging 58.5 to 59 pounds per bushel, but this weekend’s rain may cause them to lose a bit. Protein ranges from 12 to 14 percent.&nbsp;

“Growing wheat has a lot of value for our farm,” Linin said. “Wheat stubble once again has proven its value. Not only is wheat a good cash crop, if you are able to get a good price with forward contracting, but the importance of the stubble to plant into makes such a huge difference on fall crops. There are a lot of factors that going into profitability.”

In Smith County in north-central Kansas, Bryce Wiehl finished wheat harvest near Smith Center on Monday, July 8, after a week-long weather delay on his last 100 acres. He’s not complaining about the rain, which will benefit double-cropped soybeans on all his now-harvested wheat fields.

The wet conditions are in stark contrast to how the growing season started last fall, when Wiehl harvested bone-dry soybeans last September and October then drilled wheat in an absolute desert. The good fields were barely 50 percent up when the area had a rare rain in December that brought 1.5 to 1.75 inches of moisture. The wheat had snow on it through most of the winter, emerging from dormancy in February. Wiehl noted he had more moisture this past winter than the last seven years.

After starting on Monday, June 24, harvest is above average with a final farm yield of 65 bushels per acre and average test weights of 58 to 59 pounds per bushel. He noted other producers reported test weights clear up to 63 to 64 pounds per bushel.

Last year, his wheat averaged seven bushels per acre, well behind the 38 to 39 bushel-per-acre average he aims for with wheat behind soybeans. While the moisture and the bushels are welcome, the commodity prices are half what they were, driven more by investment funds than fundamentals.

“It was a wheat year; we caught early spring rains, and the wheat will do what it will do,” he said. “But it looked like a total train wreck in the fall.”

In southwest Kansas, wheat harvest is 98 percent complete in Finney County, down to the last few mud holes, according to Jeff Boyd, CEO/general manager of Garden City Co-op.&nbsp;Wheat harvest started earlier than the normal on June 20 this year, meaning many folks were finished up and able to enjoy the July 4th holiday weekend.&nbsp;

The wheat came in dry this year with moisture at 9 to 13 percent, solid test weights between 60 and 62 pounds per bushel and average protein for the area. Yields were all over the place depending on cropping rotation. Wheat after fallow did really well, thanks to the additional moisture, while wheat planted after corn or milo was not as good. Irrigated and dryland yields were comparable.&nbsp;

“No year is the same and that keeps getting reiterated,” he said. “The volatility we see goes from one extreme to the other.”&nbsp;

Taking out the last couple drought years, Boyd reported the cooperative’s overall take is back up to the five and 10-year average. In general, folks are surprised and happy with their harvest, although he noted some area producers were hit by hailstorms.&nbsp;

“It wasn’t until that wheat was really drying down that it really started to look good,” Boyd said. “That wheat in the field just looked thicker the more mature it got.”&nbsp;

The draw area for Garden City Co-op extends down to Hooker, Oklahoma, where substantial five to 10 inches of rain will continue to affect test weights and delay harvest, but Boyd said no one is going to scare the rain away.&nbsp;

As harvest finishes, he noted the next priority for producers is going to be managing the weeds coming in fast into the wheat stubble. For the elevator, Boyd explained that with a thin international market, domestic mills in Kansas and California are driving the final destination for those bushels - along with increasing demand from the wheat gluten plants in Phillipsburg and Russell.

Look for a final round-up and quality reports as the data is crunched from the 2024 wheat harvest. Producers are also encouraged to start controlling weeds and volunteer wheat now as the much-appreciated moisture will bring plenty of green to harbor wheat curl mites – the vector that will foster WSMV infections next harvest.

Final Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

With the start of the 2024-25 school year and prep sports season just around the corner, USD 428 Great Bend was still without an athletic trainer heading into Monday's board of education meeting. Ryan Zink announced he was stepping down from the role after 13 years in April 2023, and Cole Gormley served in the role last year before announcing his resignation in April. Superintendent Khris Thexton laid out a new contract with Advanced Therapy &amp; Sports Medicine in Great Bend to provide athletic trainer services for the next five years.

"We have had Advanced Therapy in the past," he said. "They've always been very supportive of the district. Honestly, between Kevyn Soupiset and Dr. (Jon) Pike, they're roaming the sidelines or in the stands at any major event we have going on so they're always available."

Dr. Soupiset has 25 years of experience in physical therapy and sports medicine, including 15-plus years of volunteering, assisting, or consulting with previous athletic trainers at Great Bend High School. While the trainer portion of the dilemma is solved, GBHS will still have to outsource its sports medicine program to Barton Community College.  

"We've gotten a lot of kids in the healthcare facility out of that program," said Board Member Randy Wetzel. "We needed to find a way to get it back."

USD 428 will pay Advanced Therapy &amp; Sports Medicine $25,000 each year for a total of 1,000 hours of work. Any time worked in excess of 1,000 hours will be paid at $30 an hour. The district will continue its search for a full-time trainer and teacher.

The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansas4-h.org/">Kansas 4-H Youth Development program</a>&nbsp;has recognized more than two dozen youth as state project award winners.

Sarah Maass, state leader for the Kansas 4-H program, said “being a state project winner indicates prior excellence and points to (youth’s) future potential.”

“Youth must display leadership skills and hearts for service by organizing events like community service projects, project meetings to share their expertise with younger 4-H members, and other unique efforts,” Maass said.

One state winner is selected yearly from the senior division (ages 14-18) in 27 project categories. Kansas 4-H youth submit a project report form, a summary of their work in a certain project.

Maass notes that in addition to learning new project skills, these youth must also demonstrate growth and strength in leadership, organization, civic engagement, and communication within the project.

Barton Co. 4-H student among state project award winners

Having the full summer to complete a mural inside the Great Bend
City Auditorium, artist Anna Popp decided three weeks inside the auditorium
during the summer heat was long enough to complete one of her largest murals.
Patrons walking into the auditorium on Stone Street can see the completed mural
on the east wall above the seating.


"Obviously there is the sports aspect, but the Great Bend Recreation Commission has a bunch of classes that are not sports related," said Popp. "So I collaged a bunch of figures into it, some playing sports, one was painting, one was cooking and one doing yoga. I went with a more abstract, blocky background."

Popp, a 2021 graduate from Great Bend High School, is entering her senior year
at the University of Kansas this fall.


"I have a program on my iPad," said Popp. "I can take a picture of a wall and then I'll draw everything on there. I'll work from that small version. Where an inch by an inch would go to a foot by a foot."

Growing up, Popp worked for the Great Bend Rec at the city
pool and volunteered as a coach.


Popp added she is working on paintings at Park Elementary School and an
interactive wall at Eisenhower Elementary School. She also has plans to paint a
mural for Nex-Tech on Main Street.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;
