A B-29 Superfortress, Mig-17s, a P-51 Gunfighter, parachute performers,
a mini jet…the list goes on and on. The fifth Great Bend Airfest is shaping out
to be one of the best airshows in the region. 

As the September event is just over
two months away, Great Bend Municipal Airport Manager Martin Miller said city
staff is preparing to make sure everything runs smoothly for the three-day
event.


"We have to worry about parking, crowd control, insurance, rental cars, tents, programs, Porta-potty, water and earplugs for people that need it and food vendors," said Miller.

With the event, Sept. 20-22, expected to cost an approximate $370,000, the City of Great Bend
is accepting corporate and individual sponsorships.

"We have a dream team with all the guys that are coming," said Miller. "There is a lot more than just these guys coming here. Christina Hayes (Community Coordinator) has a big portion of that."

Tickets for Airfest will go on

In May, the Great Bend City Council moved to send a rezoning request on
Baker Avenue back to the Planning Commission for reconsideration. Property owner
Jack Manases wants to rezone the real estate at 1620 Baker from R-2
(two-family) to C-2 (general commercial).

The council was leery about spot-zoning a parcel surrounded by residential
properties. Great Bend Assistant City Administrator Logan Burns said after the Planning
Commission originally recommended the rezoning, they have since suggested
denial of the request.


"This did go back to the Planning Commission at the June 24 meeting due to those concerns of a commercial zoning in a residential area," said Burns. "After discussion among the Planning Commission, they ultimately did recommend denial of the rezoning request with a motion of 4-to-2."

Manases planned to park his trailers and equipment inside the lot and then put
an 8' tall, screened fence around the property. The issue came up about
the size of the lot being unbuildable. Being 37.5' wide, the width of any
building that could be built would only be 12.5' due to setback ordinances.


The council voted 6-0 to deny the rezoning request.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend council denies rezoning of Baker Ave. property

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) updates its West Nile Virus dashboard each Friday during surveillance season, which is July through September. Though West Nile cases in Kansas remain limited this year, and there have been no reported cases in Barton County, all of Central Kansas is still listed by KDHE in the highest-risk category. Barton County Health Department Nurse Sarah Schridde said there are ways to mitigate those risks.

"There's no vaccine to prevent West Nile so the best way is to protect yourself from mosquito bites," she said. "You can use things like insect repellent with DEET, wear light-colored clothing, and long-sleeved shirts and pants. You can take steps to control mosquitoes indoors and outdoors such as emptying standing water."

In 2023, Kansas saw 46 neuroinvasive instances of the virus and 20 non-neuroinvasive cases. Four deaths were recorded statewide. The North Central region that features 18 counties, including Barton, had five total West Nile cases last year and zero deaths. Health Department Nurse Christina Delgadillo said it's important to stay on top of the virus.

"Some of the symptoms that can present can be fevers, as well as headaches, neck stiffness, disorientation, and muscle weakness, but there are several that do not even develop symptoms if they are infected with this," she said.

Just two cases have been confirmed in Kansas as of last week. Anyone who believes they may have West Nile Virus can consult their physician, who may diagnose the virus based on signs or symptoms or confirm the virus with a blood or spinal fluid test. Confirmed cases are updated on KDHE's West Nile dashboard weekly.

Citizens were able to get to know the candidates who are running for four local positions at the candidate forum at the Great Bend Senior Center on Thursday, July 18. The League of Women Voters (LWV) of Great Bend- Barton County invited eight candidates to participate. 

Candidates introduced themselves and answered two pre-determined questions each.&nbsp;

When last year’s budget was published for Barton Community College, the college
anticipated finishing the year with a deficit of $1.1 million. As the fiscal
year ended June 30, Barton ended with a deficit of $227,865.


Barton Vice President of Administration Mark Dean said tuition and enrollment
numbers are trending in the right direction and expenditures were slightly
under the budgeted amount.


"Expenditures are up from what we spent last year; however, we should be at 100% right now because we ended the year," said Dean. "We ended up being at about 98% on our expenditures. We came in lower than what we expected."

Barton college ends school year with $227,000 deficit

In 2022, a record 1,084 cyclists were killed in crashes with vehicles, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Tens of thousands more riders are injured each year while on their bicycles. That makes bicycle safety all the more important. Katelyn Sigler, educator at the Barton County Health Department, said Be Well Barton County is hosting a Bike Rodeo at Central Baptist Church, 3301 Lakin Ave. in Great Bend, on Saturday, July 20.

"It's just going to be from 8-9 a.m.," she said. "We'll be giving away bike helmets and the Pilot Club will be there to fit them. We're giving away two bikes and one strider bike. Plus, it's a great chance to learn all about bike safety."

Simple things like wearing a helmet, wearing bright colors, and riding a correctly-sized bicycle can increase safety. Children ages 5-12 are encouraged to bring their bicycles to Saturday's event to practice skills to become better cyclists and avoid typical crashes. Katelyn Sigler, educator at the Barton County Health Department, said Be Well Barton County is hosting a Bike Rodeo at Central Baptist Church, 3301 Lakin Ave. in Great Bend, on Saturday, July 20."It's just going to be from 8-9 a.m.," she said. "We'll be giving away bike helmets and the Pilot Club will be there to fit them. We're giving away two bikes and one strider bike. Plus, it's a great chance to learn all about bike safety."Simple things like wearing a helmet, wearing bright colors, and riding a correctly-sized bicycle can increase safety. Children ages 5-12 are encouraged to bring their bicycles to Saturday's event to practice skills to become better cyclists and avoid typical crashes. Bobby Murphy is hitting the ground running in USD 112. The new Central Plains superintendent was hired in January but officially took over the job on July 1. The district is hosting an informational meeting about future childcare opportunities on Tuesday, July 23 at 7 p.m. at the Holyrood American Legion, 416 N. Main St.

"Our board of education and our administrative teams, as well as other community organizations in Holyrood and Claflin, know how important this childcare component is for retaining young families in these rural communities, but also enticing new families as well," Murphy said. "We have this at the top of our list moving forward as something that we really find as a high need for our community."

Murphy and retired USD 112 Superintendent Bill Lowry were among a group that began looking at the possibility of providing childcare last spring. The hope is to provide up to 20 childcare slots at a location in Holyrood.

"Our hope is that we can have something open for our communities late summer or early fall," said Murphy. "We're just going to discuss the path moving forward and what our community members can do to help us along the way. We're still in the application and licensure process, but we're hopeful we can have two childcare group homes open really early fall or late summer to provide, hopefully, 10 slots each."

The district continues to work with the childcare licensing department in Barton County as well as community members and organizations within the district to finalize the project. The exact number of childcare slots will not be known until licensing and inspections are complete.

USD 112 hosting childcare meeting July 23 in Holyrood

Ready or not it’s time to start planning the fall vegetable garden. Fall gardens may face additional pressures of pests and heat, but the flavor that comes from these late season crops are often better. Fall planting requires attention to the number of days to harvest as well as the crops’ tolerance to frost. Crops may be direct seeded or transplanted into the garden. Growing transplants is a good choice when the temperature is too warm for starting seeds in the ground, if you have grow lights and space available for starting them indoors.

When seeding crops directly into the garden, plant slightly deeper than recommended in the spring to take advantage of the cooler soil temperatures and moisture available. Water more frequently to prevent the seeds from drying out. Overhead watering often causes soil to crust, making it more difficult for young, tender plants to emerge. Prevent this by applying a light sprinkling of vermiculite or compost over the row after seeding or use a soaker hose or drip irrigation right next to the row to allow water to slowly seep into the ground.

Plant potatoes if you can find seed stock or have saved seed potatoes. Do not use

freshly dug potatoes as they have a built-in dormancy that will prevent growth. Also, grocery store potatoes are often treated so they don’t sprout.

Cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower can be started from seed at this time. Choose a protected place where the soil can be kept moist and rabbits will not bother them. This will not be where they will grow the entire season but these crops will be transplanted about mid-August.

Seed spinach and long-season maturing lettuce. Leaf lettuce will be seeded later.

Transplant cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower to their final location.

Seed radishes and leaf lettuce. No need to fertilize before planting. Side-dress two weeks after transplanting or four weeks after sowing seed by applying 2 tablespoons of a 16-0-0 or 1 tablespoon of a 27-3-3, 30-3-4 fertilizer, or something similar per plant.

BOOR: Fall gardening

The City of Great Bend Public Lands Department announced that the pump at the splash pad at Veterans Memorial Park has been successfully replaced. The splash pad will be open again starting today, July 18.

The city apologizes for any inconvenience; the splash pad is a new favorite summer activity, and the maintenance team has worked to replace the pump and ensure it is fully operational and safe for use.

The splash pad operates daily from 11 a.m. -8 p.m. and is a free, fun and refreshing way to beat the summer heat. The City of Great Bend invites residents and visitors to enjoy the splash pad and the other amenities at Veterans Memorial Park.&nbsp;

Splash pad in Great Bend fixed and open again

Dozens of community members gathered inside the new
14,000-square-facility on the campus of Barton Community College Wednesday
afternoon. The official grand opening and dedication took place for the
Agriculture and Transportation Complex with remarks from multiple officials and
a handful of ribbon cuttings.


Barton Dean of Workforce Training Dr. Kathy Kottas said the college is grateful
for everyone that had a part in the project.


"It had long been a dream of the agriculture team at Barton to have a teaching farm," said Kottas. "This dream included support to many areas in the agriculture arena. With a funding opportunity through the Kansas Department of Commerce, we were able to make this dream come true."

The facility will house a Top Tech Program to provide training to become Case
New Holland technicians. Along with the program, the complex will provide space
for agriculture business management, crop protection and commercial driver’s
license (CDL) programs.


Case New Holland Training Development and Delivery Manager James Meyers was
thankful for the expansion of a partnership with the college that started in the
1990s.


"This is a beautiful facility that Barton Community College has put together to help train technicians for the local dealers," said Meyers. "One thing I've noticed while being here just over an hour is the excitement of everybody that was involved. It's a great thing to see. From the agriculture standpoint, it's going to help the local community tremendously."

In 2022, Barton received a $1.85 million matching grant from the State of
Kansas. The Barton Foundation was able to raise the matching funds for the
facility that will be available for classes this fall.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Thursday's weather

The second Saturday in August is always booked for Great Bend's final
summer bash, Party in the Park. A staple during the day-long festival at
Veterans Memorial Park is the mud volleyball tournament. 

With the addition of
the splash pad this spring, the mud volleyball tournament is being moved to the
Great Bend Fairgrounds (Great Bend Expo Complex grounds), west of town. Great Bend Community Coordinator
Christina Hayes said the north side of Vets Park will now fill up with new events.


"We're going to be adding a significant number of vendors to that area where mud volleyball was," said Hayes. "The Police Department will be having their dunk tank. We're adding Midwest Elite Wrestling Exhibition. They're actually bringing a ring to do some wrestling. The car show will add some extra entertainment as well."

Fair Board to keep the mud pits permanent to host a tournament during the Barton
County Fair in the future.
Party in the Park is Aug. 10 with musical acts from The Taylor
