Take a break from the Kansas heat and join Kansas Wheat at High Plains Journal’s Sorghum U/Wheat U event on Tuesday, August 13, at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Wichita.&nbsp;

“Kansas Wheat looks forward to Sorghum U/Wheat U each year as an educational event designed to help producers make their operations more efficient, effective and profitable,” said Kansas Wheat CEO Justin Gilpin. “Through breakout sessions and producer panels, the event addresses current challenges and trends in technology, management practices and marketing. All attendees will head home with information they can immediately put into practice.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The free, one-day event starts with breakfast sandwiches, coffee and a producer panel discussion featuring sorghum and wheat producers, including Kansas Association of Wheat Growers' Vice President, Chris Tanner, from Norton.&nbsp;

Breakout sessions throughout the day will provide additional opportunities for producers to hear the latest in wheat research, technology and management recommendations. Dalton Henry, vice president of trade policy with U.S. Wheat Associates, will discuss changes in wheat seed technology and policy implications for global trade. Romulo Lollato, K-State Research and Extension wheat and forage specialist will provide a rundown of this year’s wheat harvest and varietal and practice considerations as Kansas farmers prepare to plant wheat this fall.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kelsey Andersen Onofre, assistant professor of plant pathology in K-State's College of Agriculture, will provide updates on the diseases that impacted the 2024 wheat crop. She will also discuss the need for disease management following spring and summer rains, especially the need to control volunteer wheat early and throughout the fall to prevent Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV) infections in the following wheat crop.&nbsp;

Additional breakout sessions will cover topics specific to sorghum, including how to manage sorghum fertility to maximize profitability, the National Sorghum Producers climate-smart sustainability program and emerging markets.&nbsp;

During a complimentary lunch, keynote speaker Matt Hines, a licensed commodity broker and risk management consultant with Lowen &amp; Associates, will provide a market outlook for the wheat and sorghum markets. Kansas Wheat and Kansas Grain Sorghum will also provide updates on the top issues each commodity is working to address at the regional, state and national levels.&nbsp;

drought monitor report as of Tuesday, July 16 shows a little backsliding with a
slight increase in abnormally dry conditions.&nbsp;
Barton County and the area is unchanged, even with the high temperatures
earlier in the week.&nbsp; The six to ten-day
outlook (July 23 to 27) indicates a 40 to 50% chance of leaning below normal
temperatures and leaning 33 to 40% chance above normal for precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (July 25 to
31) indicates normal to leaning to slightly above normal for temperatures and
normal precipitation.&nbsp; Temperatures in
the upper 80s to low 90s is perfect for crops.&nbsp;
Hopefully the rain will materialize.&nbsp;
Developing corn ears and soybeans especially need moisture.&nbsp; 

Last
week we briefly discussed how agriculture transitioned to reliance on
pesticides, the problems it presented, and how we have evolved in the last
fifty years to a concept termed Integrated Pest Management (IPM).&nbsp; Today, what is IPM and what does it entail?

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; First,
IPM doesn’t eliminate pesticides from control practices.&nbsp; It may or may not involve “organic” farming
which has a separate set of conditions.&nbsp;
Organic farming has its own set of pesticides but they again have a set
of definitions to qualify as pesticides for use in organic operations.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Naturally
there are many definitions of IPM.&nbsp; The
UN Food and Agriculture Organization definition states it’s "the careful
consideration of all available pest control techniques and subsequent
integration of appropriate measures that discourage the development of pest
populations and keep pesticides and other interventions to levels that are
economically justified and reduce or minimize risks to human health and the environment.
There are several keys here: IPM examines all possible control measures to
determine the most effective and environmentally sound method or methods; while
total pest control would be great, the goal is suppression below economically
significant levels; to protect human health along with the overall environment,
not just the farm itself.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; IPM
considers nonchemical and chemical control options.&nbsp; The control measure or measures considered
should be effective with no or minimal risk to the environment. &nbsp;It has to make sense from an economic
standpoint for the producer and the public at large.&nbsp; In other words, IPM should consider the
overall economic effect, not just for the producer.&nbsp; And at the least maintain the overall
environment, if not improve it. &nbsp;Normally, it involves a combination of methods
with long-term goal, when done properly, that can overtime and with proper
management, can decrease many pest pressures and lessen the need for chemical
control.

Barton Co. currently unable to process motor vehicle transactions

Last month during the state legislature’s special budget session, one contentious issue in the budget bill was doubling the state’s childcare tax credit.&nbsp;

Rep. Mark Steffen (R-Hutchinson) made comments saying the tax credit served as an “incentive” for mothers to enter the workforce and weaken “traditional families”.&nbsp;

Justifiably, he was blasted by colleagues on both sides of the aisle.&nbsp;

Taking such an opposition to the childcare tax credit is not only “offensive”(as stated by Senate President Ty Masterson (R-Andover)), it ignores the hard reality that&nbsp; Kansas families face.&nbsp;

A shortage of childcare has continued to drive up costs. 104 of the state’s 105 counties have a higher demand than availability. The supply and demand issue raises childcare costs and prices families — especially mothers as women often make lower wages than men — out of the workforce.&nbsp;

Infant care costs are 28.4% higher than full-time college tuition at an in-state public university, and childcare costs for kids under the age of four are about equal to full-time public university tuition costs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Infant care is approximately 12.3% higher than Kansas’ average rent costs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas’ childcare costs as a percentage of workers’ salary is one of the highest in the country.&nbsp;

According to MIT’s <a href="https://livingwage.mit.edu/states/20" target="_blank">Living Wage Calculator</a>, an average single adult Kansan with one child would need to make $34.03 per hour to earn a living wage.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A living wage is defined as the amount a worker needs to make to meet their basic needs — food, childcare, healthcare, housing, transportation, taxes, and other essential items like clothing, personal care items, and broadband.&nbsp;

A household with two working adults and one child would need both adults to make at least $19.29/hour to meet their basic needs.&nbsp;

Steffen’s ideal two adult, one child household where only one adult earns an income would need to earn $33.72/hour, even while spending $0 on childcare.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to the Kansas Department of Labor’s <a href="https://www.klic.dol.ks.gov/vosnet/analyzer/resultsNew.aspx?enc=dTkmvkgGEL2blQpjB3ZCAerz8ejCpEVgtZZJ82GDP5c=" target="_blank">Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics</a> (OEWS) report from 2023, the median wage of Kansas workers (both hourly and salaried) across all industries was $21.76 per hour.&nbsp;&nbsp;

75% of all workers made less than $31.09/hour, per OEWS.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In other words, more than three-quarters of Kansas workers don’t make enough income to afford their basic needs in a two-adult single-income household with one child.&nbsp;

The data is clear: a vast majority of Kansas families do not make enough money to meet their basic needs, with or without having to pay for childcare.&nbsp;

Childcare is not a luxury for Kansas families. It’s a necessity.&nbsp;

Steffen’s remarks highlight a troubling disconnect from the economic realities facing Kansans.&nbsp;&nbsp;

By dismissing childcare tax credits as an incentive that could supposedly undermine “traditional families”, he not only ignored the overwhelming financial strain that childcare costs impose on households across the state but also neglected the critical role that affordable childcare plays in enabling parents — especially mothers — to participate fully in the workforce and public life.&nbsp;

Thankfully for Kansas families, the proposal to double the childcare tax credit ultimately passed with bipartisan support as part of the larger tax bill.&nbsp;

The state childcare credit is now 50% of the comparable federal credit, adding some relief for many families across the state.&nbsp;

A few political candidates who were invited to attend Thursday's League of Women Voters - Barton County forum at the Great Bend Senior Center were unable to attend in person. That was not the case for the Barton County Register of Deeds office as candidates Glennda French and Susan Williams were both present to answer two questions each. The second question pertained to how the office can make records accessible to the public. The incumbent French answered first.

"Since taking office, I have added an online document service," she said. "By accessing the portal through the Barton County website, our public records are available through e-search. This allows researchers the ability to access our documents remotely, saving them time of travel to our office."

Williams, a former deputy clerk, agreed the technology is a step in the right direction. She believes it will create more time for staff to work with the public.

"That's what I want to focus on is the people and really educating the public," Williams said. "The attorneys, and the real estate agents, most of them already know how to do research. If we can spend more one-on-one time with them, building them up and teaching them a skill, then everybody is going to benefit from that."

Thursday's forum was for local candidates. A similar forum scheduled for 7 p.m. on July 25 will feature candidates for state and federal offices.

Barton Register of Deeds candidates attend League of Women Voters forum

More than 12,000 students aspiring for careers in healthcare from around the world converged in Houston, Texas on June 26-29 for the HOSA Future Health Professionals International Leadership Conference. Six Great Bend High School students qualified for the international competition, and five students attended. Seniors Eliana Teri and Cailyn Murphy placed eighth out of 88 teams competing in the medical innovation category. Sophomore Cara Murphy was also part of the team but could not attend the international conference.

"Our device is a medical ID bracelet with seizure medication inside for someone with epilepsy," Teri explained. "It triples as an emergency medical administration device, emergency seizure plan, and instructions for use."

The device looks like a normal bracelet with a dangling charm that includes a QR code. The code can be scanned for instructions on how to administer the medicine and the patient's relevant medical history. Teri and Murphy entered the medical innovation category for the first time this year and looked at a problem in reverse to come up with a solution. With their Med-Dazzle bracelet, any adult can administer potentially life-saving medication.

"People with epilepsy, their medication isn't always right next to them when they need it," Murphy said. "Anyone can have a seizure at any time. Having that medication on their wrist, something that snaps open like a glow stick, it's super simple and easy to find. You scan a QR code and it's right there."

Teri and Murphy both joined HOSA as freshmen, and  both will graduate from GBHS in 2025. Murphy plans to attend Kansas State University or Wichita State University to study nursing. Teri also plans to remain in-state and study a subject in the medical field. They also want to continue to perfect the Med-Dazzle.

"We plan on working on stuff in the background, coming up with a 3-D printed prototype instead of just pieces you can get at the hardware store and throw together," said Murphy. "We want to make a real, solid prototype and keep working with patents."

The Med-Dazzle was designed by the girls specifically to address epilepsy patients, but Teri said the bracelet could have a much longer reach into the medical world.

"Realistically, it could be used for any medication that is administered through the mouth," she said. "We hope to make a pump that can be used for nasal medications."

The international conference in Houston was a great way for the students to network with other medical professionals, including a judge who builds medical devices and an intern who works behind the scenes to create medical devices.

"It was very helpful for us to know the next steps we need to take," said Teri.

Teri and Murphy qualified for the international conference by placing first at a state competition held at Kansas State University. The competition includes a visual demonstration of the project and then a short presentation. In Houston, the girls first made the first cut to the final 35 teams, then made the final cut to 10 teams. As top-10 finishers, they received finalist pins, certificates, and were recognized in an awards ceremony.

Being young innovators, the girls also want to protect their idea. They are already taking steps to do just that.

"At the conference, we had a display time for an hour where the public could come and view the presentations," Teri said. "During that, a lot of people took pictures of our project so we were worried someone might steal it. Hopefully, once we get it notarized, if someone does steal it, we can come back and say it was our idea first."

Two years ago, Teri and Murphy competed in a different category at the international competition in Nashville. Other GBHS students competing in Houston this year were Jasmine Figueroa and Jackson Trudeau in community awareness, and Bella Long in National Geographic ATC-Biology. The HOSA club at GBHS is sponsored by Joseph Bliven.

Med-Dazzling: GBHS students earn recognition for medical innovation

NESS COUNTY—A Kansas man died in an accident just before 2p.m. Saturday in Ness County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Chevy Silverado driven by Sidney Osborne, 70, Brownell, was westbound on Kansas 4 approximately two miles east of Kansas 247.

The pickup traveled left of center, crossed the eastbound lane into the south ditch and struck a 2022 Ram 1500 driven by Joseph D&nbsp;Vasquez, 62, Hoisington, on the driver's side front corner. The impact caused the Ram&nbsp; to roll.

Vasquez was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Fitzgerald Funeral Home. EMS transported Osborne to Grisell Memorial Hospital.&nbsp; Both driers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

She has so many positive attributes as our County Clerk – she truly understands that she works for the residents of our County and no one else. Also, she has never and would never use her public position for personal gain as some politicians have done. She simply loves her job and loves working for the public. 

She has a professional understanding and commitment to conducting secure and accurate elections, maintaining current and accurate Voter registration. Bev personally audits all 22 Barton County Townships as well as managing the County Budget. She graciously helps our Townships with their budgets, certifies all of Barton County’s Municipality budgets, provides the required financial reports to the State of Kansas and so much more.

She has served Barton County constituents for over 34 years. During her employment with Barton County she has worked for Communications 911, County Attorney’s Office, Public Works, County Engineer/Emergency Management, Records Dept, and lastly, she’s been in the County Clerks Office for eleven years. She had one of the best mentors (Donna Zimmerman) this county has ever seen.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep pets away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. Spaces left for Santa Fe Trail summer camp

Students from Barton’s chapter of HOSA (Future Health Professionals) joined about 12,500 students in Houston, Texas earlier this summer at the 2024 International Leadership Conference (ILC), where they competed against students from all 50 states as well as students from China, American Samoa, South Korea, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Barton HOSA Advisor Karen Gunther said the heart of the ILC is the International Competitive Events Program, a showcase where HOSA members display their knowledge in both college and career readiness.

“These exceptional HOSA members have earned their place by excelling at district, regional, state, and national levels, with over 600 health professionals serving as judges to evaluate their mastery of industry-aligned concepts and skills,” she said. “Barton HOSA would like to thank everyone&nbsp;for their support, and we are very proud of not only the Barton students but all the students across the organization.”

All four of the students attending were recognized on stage at the Grand Awards Ceremony Saturday evening as top ten competitors in their individual events.

Valeria Gallardo placed first overall in the Phlebotomy competition, receiving a gold medal and gift basket from the event sponsoring organization, which included a voucher for a free certification exam.

Kaden Baird placed third in the Medical Assisting competition, receiving the bronze medal.

Brianna Auker was recognized in the top five in Clinical Lab Science.

Hannah Dapogny was recognized in the top five for Nurse Assisting.

Along with the competitive events, students were able to participate in many break-out sessions, attend the Vendor EXPO, and visit the Johnson Space Center (NASA).

Gunther attended the conference as an International Competitive Event team member and helped organize and prepare the over 90 competitive events for more than 12,000 middle school, high school, and college competitors.

HOSA is a global, student-led organization recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services. The group’s mission is to empower members to become leaders in the global health community through education, collaboration, and experience. HOSA actively promotes career opportunities in the health industry and aims to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.

Barton healthcare students place in international HOSA competition

On Thursday, July 18, a Barton County jury convicted Joseph Wayne Cruse of nine Jessica’s Law sex offenses, and three additional counts of aggravated intimidation of a witness, for crimes committed over the span of seven years. 

Jury selection began on Monday, July 15. The State of Kansas presented evidence over three days. The defense did not present any evidence. The jury heard closing arguments on July 18 and began deliberations just after 10 a.m.. The jury reached a verdict around 3 p.m. 

Following the jury’s verdict, District Court Judge Steve Johnson revoked the defendant’s bond and addressed his obligation to register as a sex offender. Sentencing in this matter will be scheduled at a later date. 

Each Jessica’s Law conviction carries a presumed life sentence with a mandatory 25 years before possible parole.

The specific convictions include: Five counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, three counts of aggravated intimidation of witness, one count of aggravated criminal sodomy, two counts of rape and one count of attempted aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

Tickets for the Barton Foundation’s 45th Annual Big Benefit Auction, the Sapphire anniversary of the event, are available through Aug. 12. The auction will take place on Aug. 24.

Tickets are $50 each or $400 per table of eight. Seating is limited, and no tickets will be sold at the door, so those interested are encouraged to reserve their tickets early. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. at the Great Bend Events Center for the silent auction. Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m., and complimentary beer will be available until the live auction starts later in the evening. This year’s auction is underwritten by UMB Wealth Management, Craig &amp; Jolene Biggs, Nex-Tech, Spectrum CPA Partners LLC, and Edward Jones advisors Jim Armatys, Todd Armatys, Jim Vopat, and Kris Sundahl.

The auction includes items at all price points and features great merchandise, event tickets, and travel packages. Live auction items include VIP tickets to the Price Is Right, Broadway shows, a Mexican resort vacation, a barbeque dinner for 20 at Dry Lake Brewing, concert and sports tickets, and more.&nbsp;Also included in the evening is the Golden Ticket drawing, where attendees can purchase one of 125 chances to win $1,000 to spend the night of the event in the auctions.

Donations are now being accepted for the live and silent auctions at the 19th annual Sunflower Diversified Services Charity Gala.

The event is scheduled for 5:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Columbus Club, 723 Main, Great Bend.

Sunflower serves children and adults with special needs in central Kansas.

“We encourage Sunflower supporters to contribute items for our auctions,” said Cody Harris, director of planned giving and community support. “The items can be big or small, or anything in between, so that we cater to everyone’s budget.”

Anyone who registers for the event before Aug. 30 will pay the early-bird price of $90 for an individual or $700 for a table for eight. After that date the charge is $100 for an individual or $800 for a table of eight.

In addition to the auctions, “Punch Your Luck,” gun raffles and other games of chance also are on the agenda.

The Band Bartlett of Hays will entertain throughout the evening and dinner will be a whole hog. Adult beverages will be available.

Brian Bellendir is the auctioneer and Scott Donovan will emcee.

“The Gala has a long history of being entertaining, as well as educational,” Harris commented. “Attendees will enjoy a fun evening and have the chance to learn more about the people we serve and the many programs we offer to them.

“Sunflower individuals rely on the community’s generosity to provide many services that are not covered by tax dollars,” he continued. “Those who participate in the Gala always come away knowing that their contributions make a real difference in the lives of their neighbors in central Kansas.”

Sunflower Gala set for Sept. 28; auction items requested

Clara Barton Medical Center announced a new partnership with Holistic Pain Management (HPM), aimed at providing advanced pain management services to our community. This collaboration will bring&nbsp; pain relief treatments to patients in Hoisington and the surrounding areas, eliminating the need for long drives to receive care.

HPM works directly with the staff at Clara Barton Medical Center, along with the patient’s primary care provider, to offer advanced pain management treatments, including nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablations, and other types of injections. They treat various painful medical conditions such as back and neck pain, spine injuries, knee and shoulder pain, headaches, sports and work-related injuries, inflammation, and arthritis, among many others.

"Our goal is to reduce pain and improve function in patients suffering from chronic pain, particularly those living in rural areas," said Ryan Shedd, CEO of HPM. “We are on a mission to make it easier and faster for folks to find relief.”

Previously, patients often had to wait months for an appointment, but with the introduction of HPM's services, they will now be seen much sooner.
