All Taylor Sharkey can do now is share the love of her son with those around her. Kanyn Sharkey's unexpected death from medication complications last December not only stripped the one-year-old of his future, but also shattered Taylor's dream of being a mother. Taylor has used memorials made in Kanyn's name to purchase a climbing wall at the Brit Spaugh Zoo in Great Bend, and she recently teamed up with the Otis Fire Department for a new playset to be installed soon at the city park in Otis.

"I wanted to do something big that would be a good, heartfelt memorial for Kanyn so he would be remembered forever," Taylor said. "I had big dreams and aspirations since he was such a big and wild spirit. With everybody's help and donations, this has made that dream come true for me."

The new playground, for toddlers aged 2-5, is designed for an area 27 x 30 feet and will include a climbing wall and slide. Taylor's father, Mike, is a former fire chief in Otis and has been active with the department for nearly two decades. The Sharkey's have worked with city officials as the project will involve relocating a current swing set and adding additional lighting and cameras in the park.

Kanyn had a knack for climbing anything and everything. Taylor had a recliner by the window and the one-year-old was known to climb to the top to look out the window. Once, she thought it was safe to take a quick shower. She emerged to find Kanyn had climbed the Christmas tree. His proclivity for climbing earned him the nickname "Mountain Goat."

"He was absolutely feral," Taylor said. "He was as feral as they came. He was so full life, love, and energy. There were absolutely no bad days with that little guy. He climbed everything. There was nothing that didn't get climbed on in my house."

Taylor has been a vocal force about the struggles of losing a child on social media. The community response has been a large one. Friends and strangers have dropped off stuffed animals with soundbars featuring recordings of Kanyn's laugh, pictures, and wind chimes. Someone made a stuffed mountain goat out Kanyn's clothes. Another sewed remnants of one of Kanyn's blankets into a new blanket as a birthday gift for Taylor.

"I'm very thankful, grateful, and fortunate to have all the love and support I have from everybody," said Taylor. "There are people I didn't talk to for years who now check in on me once a week, once a month. There's one gal who sends me cards at least twice a month. I can't even articulate how much support there has been, and the heartfelt, genuine, customized gifts people have come up with. The amount of support is amazing."

Taylor, who lives in Otis, hopes to have a dedication ceremony for the new playground once it is installed so she can see the joy and memory of Kanyn with other families. She hopes to have the playground installed by Thanksgiving.

Barton County’s “All Out Fall Mixer” held in Great Bend.

Young Professionals, FUEL stands for focus, unite, elevate and lead. Great Bend
Chamber of Commerce Director Megan Barfield said the event kicks off at 5 p.m.
at Animal Medical Center.


"AMC is ready to open up their barn doors and have a great party," said Barfield. "There is going to be steak being grilled, lots of cool prizes and beverages. That will be a good time."

Along with raffles prizes and food, there is a good chance the Kansas State
University football game will be showing.

The weather on Saturday felt more like August, but that was perfectly fine for Rosewood Rodeo riders and their horses. They handled it like champions, having participated in Rosewood Equine Therapy Classes all summer long. Regardless of near-record high temperatures in the 90s, the 20th Annual Rosewood Rodeo went off without a hitch, during the event, held at Barton County Fair Grounds Expo III Arena on Oct. 5.

“I was happy to have the heat,” said Rosewood Ranch Manager Eric Hammond. “A cool snap would have given our horses more energy. When they have cool weather, especially in the morning, they tend to be more exuberant. As it turned out, things went really well. The horses did their jobs, and all of our riders and horse handlers did phenomenal and seemed to work in unison. It’s like we’ve been doing this for 20 years.”

Thirty-four equine therapy riders displayed their horsemanship skills at this year’s Rodeo; skills they developed throughout the year by participating in equine therapy at Rosewood Ranch. Located five miles north of Pawnee Rock, Rosewood Ranch exists to help people with developmental disabilities. The Rodeo is the grand day annually that equine therapy participants get to showcase their abilities to family, friends and community members.

The riders represented a gamut of experience, from Josh Trimmer recognized for having participated in every Rosewood Rodeo held, to Trace Ritterhouse competing in his very first one. They were joined by fellow participants Crystal Alkire, Pam Babcock, Robin Bethel, Stacy Buchwald, Keith Boyer, Darren Brown, Vance Cornwell, Chris Devine, Jason Ehrentraut, Jonathan Folkerts, Codie Hardie, Taylor Hertach, Johnathan Howe, DJ Johnson, Shaun Ledesma, Tyler Michaelis, John Reynolds, Tori Rose, Andy Schultz, Abbey Stanley, Debbie Wasinger, Jim West, and Jim Wonsetler.

In addition to the adult riders, Rosewood’s youth riders, involved in the Children’s Equine Therapy Program, participated in a trail pattern event at the beginning of the Rodeo. At the end of each of their rides, the youth riders received a ribbon for their participation and they were photographed with their award. Youth riders participating in this year’s Rodeo were Faith Schneweis-Trickey, Parker Laviolette, Collin Duncan, Landon Titsworth, and Martin Trego, competing in his first rodeo.

Therapy horses participating in this year’s Rodeo were Jordan, Harriet, Colonel, and MR. Red. All of them have at least three years of Rosewood Rodeo experience.

“Thinking about 20 years of Rodeo, you start to reminisce and remember all the horses and riders we’ve had participate over those years, said Hammond. “All the original horses we started with are no longer with us, and we’ve gone through a couple of sets of horses in some cases, so that provides perspective for how long we’ve been holding this event.”

This year, Rosewood’s Percheron wagon team of Dixie and Dolly made an appearance during the grand entry. The Honorable Kansas Supreme Court Justice Dan Biles provided the invocation during the Rodeo grand entry ceremony, which began the day’s events. During his invocation, Biles stated, “We come in the spirit of fellowship, family and community, as we support our friends and loved ones in this demonstration of all they have accomplished in their lives. They have worked hard and we recognize that work by being here for them.”

Other events throughout the day added to the Rodeo experience. They included two performances by the award winning all-female “The American Dream” horse-riding drill team. The Administration Team won a staff competition against the Day Services and Residential Teams. A silent auction of items donated by local businesses was held to raise money, with proceeds from the auction going to Rosewood’s Roots and Wings Foundation. And a tack shop also provided items for sale, selling items made by Rosewood clients who work at Rosewood Studio and Retail locations. A photo booth, games and activities entertained children throughout the day. A pulled pork lunch, along with a variety of concession items, was available for purchase during the Rodeo.

Immediately following the Rodeo, awards were presented. Kaleb Nixon earned the medal for “Best Cowboy Spirit;”&nbsp;Cole Morin&nbsp;was named “Most Improved Rider;” and Trace Ritterouse won the “Most Inspirational Leader” award.

Ribbons were presented to participants for Trails, along with Barrel and Horsemanship events. The clients competed in three levels, depending on their riding ability: rider with lead and side-walker, rider with lead, and independent rider.

During the awards ceremony, high point and reserve awards were presented to Horse Show participants. The adult therapy riders were recognized in front of their peers and spectators for earning the most points in their respective categories during Horse Show Days at Rosewood Ranch throughout this year. Sashes were awarded to winners, representing three divisions in the categories of trail and horsemanship. Awards were also presented for showmanship.

Winners in each respective category were: High Point Trail – Johnathan Howe, Kaleb Nixon, Crystal Alkire; Reserve Trail – John Reynolds, Keith Boyer, Cole Morin; High Point Horsemanship – Tori Rose, Pam Babcock, Shaun Ledesma; Reserve Horsemanship – Vance Cornwell, Jim West, Jim Wonsetler; High Point Showmanship – Shaun Ledesma; and Reserve Showmanship – Josh Trimmer.

Nearly 50 people helped at this year’s event, which was organized by the Rosewood Rodeo Committee, led by Rodeo chairman Anna Hammond.

“Every Rosewood Rodeo has been special in its own way, but this one, commemorating 20 years of equine therapy for our riders and their families, was extra special,” said Rosewood CEO Tammy Hammond. “You never know what you’ll get from year to year, everything from freezing weather to summer temperatures. But you can always count on amazing volunteers who give up their Saturday to create this remarkable day, from the horse handlers to the volunteers who work the tack shop, concessions, silent auction and children’s activities. We’re so thankful to everyone who contributes in making this day possible, including the riders, along with their family and friends who come out to support our event each year.”

Participants enjoy hot time at 20th Annual Rosewood Rodeo

Recently, Fort Larned National Historic Site reduced the park’s deferred maintenance backlog using funding available to National Park Service units through the Great American Outdoor Act (GAOA) Legacy Restoration Fund.

These funds supported the replacement of aging roof surfaces, tuck pointing of historic stone masonry, window and door repairs, and the painting of wood features. This additional funding source also supported the completion of structural repairs to two porches. &nbsp;The historic structures whose preservation was made possible with these funds includes the Quarter Master, Commissary/Arsenal buildings and the Commanding Officers’ Quarters. Overall, thirteen thousand square feet of fire-retardant cedar shingles were replaced, thirty-three windows and twelve doors were repaired, and fifteen thousand square feet of wood surfaces were painted.

These preservation efforts were led by the&nbsp;GAOA funded&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://larnedks.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=30074656a4186239d3a4e3291&amp;id=835bd59a51&amp;e=faef22bc3e">Maintenance Action Team</a>&nbsp;(MAT),&nbsp;comprised of skilled craftspeople&nbsp;from the National Park Service&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://larnedks.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=30074656a4186239d3a4e3291&amp;id=10b6a7d00a&amp;e=faef22bc3e">Historic Preservation Training Center</a>&nbsp;(HPTC). They were also supported by&nbsp;an enthusiastic youth crew from the&nbsp;Student Conservation Association (SCA). HPTC recruits, trains, and employs people in traditional historic restoration and preservation techniques and trades. Several geographically based&nbsp;MATs travel to national parks to train and work alongside park staff to complete small, but critical, maintenance rehabilitation and repair projects on historic structures.

“We are grateful for the expertise that the MAT team brought to Fort Larned.&nbsp; With their skill and the funding available from GAOA, Fort Larned’s historic structures are well preserved and continue to tell the fascinating story of this 1860s army post,” said acting Superintendent Cassie Branstetter.

MATs enable the National Park Service to complete projects that require knowledge and competency in traditional trades in a consistent and cost-effective manner.&nbsp;They also serve as a beacon for traditional trade skills, allowing younger generations to learn and appreciate the importance of preserving our architectural heritage.

Infrastructure funding from GAOA is part of a concerted effort to address the extensive deferred maintenance and repair backlog in national parks. Supported by revenue from energy development, GAOA's Legacy Restoration Fund provides up to $1.3 billion per year for five years to the National Park Service. These funds make significant enhancements in national parks, ensure their preservation, and provide opportunities for recreation, education, and enjoyment for current and future visitors.

Speaker to present about online safety at Holy Family School

The fall migration is in its early stages and wildlife officials are already on the lookout for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Manager Jason Wagner tested 80 teal ducks on Sept. 14 for opening day of duck season and just two tested positive. That's a big improvement from a year ago.

"We tested about 50 of them on opening day of teal season last year and I think over half of them were positive," he said. "That shows a pretty good variance."

HPAI was a big concern for poultry farmers around the Midwest last winter. Several dozen dead snow geese could be spotted at the Bottoms last year, particularly in Pool 1A. Last December, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported 21 outbreaks of HPAI in Kansas since the start of the outbreak in 2022.

"Last year, we had a bunch of snow geese die off because of avian influenza," Wagner said. "They're a little bit more susceptible to it, but last year I never noticed any big die-off or numbers of ducks dying. They're more of a carrier for it, it seems like."

Wagner said it is important that poultry farmers change their shoes after walking around Cheyenne Bottoms or Veterans Lake before walking around their own birds. HPAI is often transmitted through the feces of wild birds.

Lower rates of avian flu found at Cheyenne Bottoms ahead of fall migration

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and every year pink ribbons intertwine throughout the media. These small symbols represent the big issue of breast cancer and those affected by the disease. And there’s good reason to raise awareness as breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the U.S. In fact, one in eight women will have breast cancer at some point. In Kansas, it’s the top diagnosed invasive cancer.

The statistics are high. What would you do if you knew your chances of developing breast cancer were increased?

Your lifestyle can play a large role in overall health, and specifically, there are ways to take action to reduce your risk of breast cancer:

· Achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight in the upper body is shown to increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer.

· Breastfeed. It’s not always possible for moms to breastfeed, but for those who can, it can offer some protection against cancer.

· Minimize post-menopausal hormone treatment. Follow the advice of your healthcare provider, but understand the risks of hormone replacement therapy.

· Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Good nutrition protects against cancer at the cellular level. Look for antioxidant-rich foods like berries, spinach, walnuts, and green tea.

· Get enough physical activity. Studies show that women who exercise four or more hours per week have a lower risk of breast cancer than less active women.

Like all diseases, some risk factors, such as genetic makeup and family history, are uncontrollable. In this case, embracing a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk is especially important. Along with this, regular breast exams can be lifesaving. In fact, women aged 45-54 should get a mammogram every year.

Unfortunately, breast cancer is common, and you likely know someone who has been diagnosed with the disease. But with advances in research and early detection, there are more survivors of breast cancer every year.

So, continue to spread awareness and proudly wear pink. Support those who battle breast cancer, and encourage healthy behaviors to reduce your risk. With conscious efforts, together we can help to make breast cancer less common in years to come.

In September, the Great Bend Recreation Commission Board approved a bid
from Athco to resurface the rubber pad at the My Backyard Playground. The bid
was not to exceed $20,000 to patch holes and add a half inch of surfacing to the
playground outside of the Activity Center on 18th Street.

Rec Executive Director Chris Umphres said adding surfacing in a new area
brought an extra cost for the preparation work.


"That would get that peninsula area of mulch right by drums and pavilion," said Umphres. "It'll clean that up. If we're going to do it, we might as well do it right. The patches are falling apart. We got our use out of that."

The Great Bend Rec Board approved the change order from Athco for a total bill
of $22,463.

With an empty canvas, some people see things that other people do not. Hoisington resident Deb Reif takes that canvas and turns it into something beautiful.

Hoisington Public Library, 169 S. Walnut, has a display of her artwork, ranging from acrylic to charcoal, pencil drawings, and Zen Tangles.

Reif is a life-long resident of Hoisington. Mac and Mayette Keith, her parents, moved to Hoisington in 1945 because her father got a job with the railroad.

The artist has one particular painting that hung in her parent’s house and now hangs in her house, and one day, will hang in her son Shane’s house. The Keiths didn’t have any wedding photos as the photographer failed to produce any from the ceremony when they married mid-twentieth century. Mac was sent to World War II shortly after the wedding. So, Reif gathered old photos and drew a charcoal portrait of their wedding day for their 50th wedding anniversary.

“They didn’t know in advance,” Reif said. “I know they appreciated it, although my mother didn’t think it looked like her.”

Reif started art in high school with teacher Jordan Murray, who motivated her more than anybody to pursue her talent. She still stays in touch with him.

“I learned art from him,“ Reif said. “Ninety percent of what I know I learned from him.”

A senior art student, Reif even did some painting restoration. As a teacher, Reif feels Murray touched her life forever.

Her skill at art became well-known in Hoisington, and for many years, Reif painted windows all over Hoisington, mixing powered tempura paint with water. She started with a witch at Halloween, and moved on to Christmas murals.

“It’s a lot easier now,” she said. Acrylic paint comes in so many colors and is surprisingly easy to get off with a bit of window spray and scraper

She also gave private lessons and still stays in touch with some of the students.

Reif planned to be an art teacher and went to Barton for a couple of years. Life intervened and now art is her hobby.

What she enjoys most is, “the peace that comes with art is very relaxing and fun.”

Besides art, the Reif family is known throughout the area for their work with Kans for Kids. The organization started in October 1994 by her and her husband Duane’s children, Sarah and Shane in 1994. The project was to help with the medical expenses of their 10-month-old cousin, Katie. The project continued and has assisted 45 children, according to the Kans for Kids website.

Hoisington's Reif turns an empty canvas into art

Trick-or-treaters in Barton County will have many options again this Halloween. Great Bend's Downtown Halloween Trick or Treat Event presented by the local Kiwanis Club, is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ellinwood and Hoisington will feature Trunk-or-Treat events on Halloween. Ellinwood Community Church Councilmember Nancy Baird said the Ellinwood event begins at 6 p.m. and runs until approximately 7:15 p.m. or until candy runs out so it's best to arrive early.

"We love to see everyone come out in costume," she said. "It's just a really safe environment because there are no cars that are able to go through. Last year, I think we had about 350 kids in attendance so that's what we're planning for again this year."

The Methodist Church started the tradition in Ellinwood, and now the Ellinwood Community Church, 701 N. Fritz, is hosting its second annual event. Organizations like Upward Bound and clubs from Ellinwood High School are joining the fun this year. Free hot chocolate and hot dogs will be provided to trick-or-treaters.

"What's great is we have a huge parking lot to accommodate a lot of fun trunks," Baird said. "Typically, Ellinwood EMS and Ellinwood Fire Department join in on the fun with firetrucks and an ambulance, which is a treat for the kids."

The Farmhouse in Hoisington is hosting a Trunk-or Treat on Main Street there from 6-8 p.m. on Halloween. Trick-or-treaters can vote on the top trunks with cash prizes awarded to the top three participants. First Street Church of God in Hoisington, 601 E. 1st Street, will host a non-scary event beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 31 with train rides, candied apples, hot chocolate, and more.

Great Bend High School will host its Haunted High event from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25. Trick-or-treating for all ages starts at the east two doors at GBHS. The Drama Club will have its haunted hallway for those looking for an extra fright.

Barton Community College will host its Haunting on the Hill from 3-6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26. The Victorian Halloween celebration will feature free games, performances, art-making, face painting, and more. There will also be a Victorian-horror haunted house for ages 10 and older with a $5 entry fee.

Great Bend's holiday parade theme and details

Staff at Lincoln Elementary in Great Bend recently found an unwanted guest lurking in the walls of the nurse's office bathroom. During Monday's USD 428 Board of Education meeting, Assistant Superintendent John Popp sought approval from the board to move ahead with repairs.

"We started digging into it and discovered there was a water pipe that's been leaking for an undetermined amount of time behind the wall in Lincoln Elementary," he said. "There was mold behind the cabinet."

The leak involved clean water, not sewer water, and had drained near the bottom of the wall and was therefore never visible to staff. Magna Dry was hired to dry and clean the area. The board approved a bid from Brentwood Builders for $34,107.91 to complete the repairs.

"Our insurance deductible on water damage is $50,000," Popp said. "Thirty-four thousand dollars is the total cost, so we will be paying for that whole thing. We did turn it into insurance because that allows us move forward with the repairs right away."

Popp said the goal is to get the restroom working soon but the entire project may take several months to complete.

Wall repairs underway after leak at Lincoln School in Great Bend

Parched soil and warmer-than-average temperatures, combined with low prices, have dampened the hopes of Kansas producers who are dusting in their wheat crop. The climatic conditions don’t provide much hope for a change in the weather through the winter, leaving growers praying for spring showers.&nbsp;

“Last year, the state of Kansas planted 7.6 million acres of wheat. Early indications point towards this year being similar to slightly lower due to the challenging dry conditions and low cash prices,” said Justin Gilpin, Kansas Wheat CEO. “The dry fall has sped up fall harvest, extending the window for double-crop wheat behind corn and soybeans. Even if that is just for ground cover, it is going to need some fall moisture for any hope of establishment. “

Kansas producers have planted 52 percent of winter wheat acres, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending October 6, 2024. That planting progress is on pace with last year and the five-year average. Emergence was rated at 21 percent, near 24 percent both last year and on average.&nbsp;

Jason Ochs, who farms near Syracuse in Hamilton County, reported that they received moisture two to three weeks ago and all the wheat has emerged and has very good stands. Acres in the area appear to be pretty consistent with last year. However, it’s been hot, 80 to 95 degrees in October, and dry, so it’s going backwards fast.

“The wheat is coming on way too strong, in my opinion,” he said.

Temperatures that are 10 to 15 degrees warmer than average are a big concern. In addition to agronomic concerns about the wheat crop’s emergence, which is dependent on temperature, these higher-than-normal temperatures have additional impacts on the stressors for an emerging wheat crop.&nbsp;

“Temperatures are obviously warmer, so we have a higher moisture demand,” said Chip Redmond, K-State assistant meteorologist and Kansas Mesonet Manager. “We still have active growth in summer grasses and trees and that depletes overall residual soil moisture. With a late freeze, then we see an increase in insect stress because we’re not able to kill the pests off, force hibernation or help them migrate south out of the area. That increased stress leads to more damage potential as well.”&nbsp;

Insects were a major factor in the delay in planting in Barton County for Dean Stoskopf, who farms near Hoisington.&nbsp;

“We held off planting for several weeks because there was a high number of grasshoppers and armyworms,” he said. “That, with the hot, dry weather, has not made for the best planting conditions. In early planted wheat, folks used insecticides to try and suppress that pressure, but the extremely high number of grasshoppers would try and clean out fields as soon as it emerged where they did not.”

Stoskopf is about two-thirds done planting wheat, around 10 days behind average pace. Elsewhere in the county, some folks are done and others have barely started. That includes folks who are double-cropping behind soybeans and continuing to wait for moisture. Overall, acreage is steady compared to previous years.

Redmond noted a cooler period coming next week around October 14 or 15 could bring brief freezing conditions that would help with that pressure and bring in some cloud cover and maybe a couple of sprinkles to the far edges of the state. Still, those showers would be an anomaly, and he does not forecast any real moisture through the end of October. Additionally, opportunities for moisture appear limited even into the early winter months.&nbsp;

“And as we go into a period where we don’t get much precipitation - winters are when we climatologically average the least amount of moisture - we are unlikely going to recharge soil moisture for potentially the next three or four months,” he said. “We are definitely started to get concerned, not only on the agriculture side but also on the public water side, with drought expansion likely to continue with above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation.”&nbsp;

This extension of drought conditions is driven by a combination of factors, namely the transition from El Niño to La Niña and the ongoing negative Pacific Decadal Oscillation. The El Niño Southern Oscillation, which is characterized by water temperatures in the East Equatorial Pacific, was warmer than normal last winter, in an El Nino status. This often means moisture for Kansas - like that observed last spring.&nbsp;

Redmond noted that those timely spring showers helped recharge soil moisture when and where they came. Now, however, those supplies are running low. NASS reported that, as of the week ending October 6, there is no surplus topsoil moisture with overall supplies rated at 25 percent very short, 24 percent short and 28 percent adequate. The same is true with subsoil moisture with no surplus, 23 percent very short, 48 percent short and 29 percent adequate.&nbsp;

Tanner Brown from Colby in Thomas County was waiting for the rain three weeks ago before starting to plant wheat, but they didn’t get much, so they started dusting it in. They’ve finished all the dryland wheat, but very little has emerged, and when you dig down, most hasn’t even sprouted. He expects acres in the area to be consistent with last year, but he has seen some wheat stubble going back into wheat and some fields with harvested corn stalks going into wheat, which is a bit surprising because of the continued dry conditions.

Those dry conditions are expected to continue in the near term, according to Redmond. El Niño waned with cooling water over the early summer with “neutral conditions” now observed.&nbsp; A transition into La Niña, cooler than normal waters in the same east Pacific region, is expected into the early winter. This usually signals dry conditions for Kansas and the central and southern United States. This La Niña period, however, is expected to not be as potent as previous episodes.&nbsp;

“But thankfully, La Niña is going to be weak and rather short-lived, expected to wane as we get into the spring and return to neutral conditions,” Redmond said. “So that’s good for us, meaning that maybe these conditions will be short-term in the climate realm. It’ll only be four or five months instead of years.”&nbsp;

While the weak La Niña event is expected to be short-lived, Redmond is more concerned with the negative Pacific Decadal Oscillation, which has persisted for 10 years. This means that waters in the north central Pacific Ocean are warmer than normal with cooler conditions in the eastern extent of the north Pacific, which will likely contribute to warm and dry conditions throughout the winter. His only hope - a strong typhoon forms in the far West Pacific, amplifies the jet stream and brings moisture back to the Midwest.&nbsp;

But until the pattern breaks down, there will not be a change to the warm, dry weather in the forecast. Still, Kansas producers will continue to meet these challenges the same way they always have - rely on proven genetics and agronomic practices, dust in the crop and pray for rain.&nbsp;

 </figure>Parched soil and warmer-than-average temperatures, combined with low prices, have dampened the hopes of Kansas producers who are dusting in their wheat crop. The climatic conditions don’t provide much hope for a change in the weather through the winter, leaving growers praying for spring showers.&nbsp;“Last year, the state of Kansas planted 7.6 million acres of wheat. Early indications point towards this year being similar to slightly lower due to the challenging dry conditions and low cash prices,” said Justin Gilpin, Kansas Wheat CEO. “The dry fall has sped up fall harvest, extending the window for double-crop wheat behind corn and soybeans. Even if that is just for ground cover, it is going to need some fall moisture for any hope of establishment. “Kansas producers have planted 52 percent of winter wheat acres, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending October 6, 2024. That planting progress is on pace with last year and the five-year average. Emergence was rated at 21 percent, near 24 percent both last year and on average.&nbsp;Jason Ochs, who farms near Syracuse in Hamilton County, reported that they received moisture two to three weeks ago and all the wheat has emerged and has very good stands. Acres in the area appear to be pretty consistent with last year. However, it’s been hot, 80 to 95 degrees in October, and dry, so it’s going backwards fast.“The wheat is coming on way too strong, in my opinion,” he said.Temperatures that are 10 to 15 degrees warmer than average are a big concern. In addition to agronomic concerns about the wheat crop’s emergence, which is dependent on temperature, these higher-than-normal temperatures have additional impacts on the stressors for an emerging wheat crop.&nbsp;“Temperatures are obviously warmer, so we have a higher moisture demand,” said Chip Redmond, K-State assistant meteorologist and Kansas Mesonet Manager. “We still have active growth in summer grasses and trees and that depletes overall residual soil moisture. With a late freeze, then we see an increase in insect stress because we’re not able to kill the pests off, force hibernation or help them migrate south out of the area. That increased stress leads to more damage potential as well.”&nbsp;Insects were a major factor in the delay in planting in Barton County for Dean Stoskopf, who farms near Hoisington.&nbsp;“We held off planting for several weeks because there was a high number of grasshoppers and armyworms,” he said. “That, with the hot, dry weather, has not made for the best planting conditions. In early planted wheat, folks used insecticides to try and suppress that pressure, but the extremely high number of grasshoppers would try and clean out fields as soon as it emerged where they did not.”Stoskopf is about two-thirds done planting wheat, around 10 days behind average pace. Elsewhere in the county, some folks are done and others have barely started. That includes folks who are double-cropping behind soybeans and continuing to wait for moisture. Overall, acreage is steady compared to previous years.Redmond noted a cooler period coming next week around October 14 or 15 could bring brief freezing conditions that would help with that pressure and bring in some cloud cover and maybe a couple of sprinkles to the far edges of the state. Still, those showers would be an anomaly, and he does not forecast any real moisture through the end of October. Additionally, opportunities for moisture appear limited even into the early winter months.&nbsp;“And as we go into a period where we don’t get much precipitation - winters are when we climatologically average the least amount of moisture - we are unlikely going to recharge soil moisture for potentially the next three or four months,” he said. “We are definitely started to get concerned, not only on the agriculture side but also on the public water side, with drought expansion likely to continue with above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation.”&nbsp;This extension of drought conditions is driven by a combination of factors, namely the transition from El Niño to La Niña and the ongoing negative Pacific Decadal Oscillation. The El Niño Southern Oscillation, which is characterized by water temperatures in the East Equatorial Pacific, was warmer than normal last winter, in an El Nino status. This often means moisture for Kansas - like that observed last spring.&nbsp;Redmond noted that those timely spring showers helped recharge soil moisture when and where they came. Now, however, those supplies are running low. NASS reported that, as of the week ending October 6, there is no surplus topsoil moisture with overall supplies rated at 25 percent very short, 24 percent short and 28 percent adequate. The same is true with subsoil moisture with no surplus, 23 percent very short, 48 percent short and 29 percent adequate.&nbsp;Tanner Brown from Colby in Thomas County was waiting for the rain three weeks ago before starting to plant wheat, but they didn’t get much, so they started dusting it in. They’ve finished all the dryland wheat, but very little has emerged, and when you dig down, most hasn’t even sprouted. The Great Bend Recreation Commission Board did not miss a beat after
September’s meeting when board member Jessica Milsap announced she was moving
to Wichita and would no longer be able to serve on the board. The Great Bend
Rec introduced Amanda Staab as Milsap’s replacement the following month at Monday’s meeting.


"I said real early on, when I spoke with the mayor, I'm not hear to shake things up or change things," said Staab. "I truly want to invest in the community. The Rec has always been near and dear to my heart. I'm looking forward to it."
