Kansas State University extension specialists and agricultural agents and local conservation district representatives will host a field day focused on controlling woody encroachment and other brush management techniques.

This free event, beginning at 10:30 a.m. on November 6, will offer expert advice to the public about how to use chemical and mechanical treatments to combat the spread of invasive trees and brush. It will be hosted at the Robin Kohls Ranch, and a free lunch will be provided to participants.

Organizers say managing the spread of trees on grassland is essential.

“We know that Kansas is losing a lot of acres of grassland and pasture to the spread of trees and other brush,” said Stacie Minson, K-State Research and Extension watershed specialist. “The economic loss for landowners and producers means learning these key land management strategies will be really beneficial now, and into the future.”

The program will include other topics as well, including the use of alternative watering systems for livestock, winter cow nutrition, and other water quality concerns. Minson said that this is especially relevant, as the day’s discussion will help the public learn more about how to improve water quality in Kanopolis Reservoir, which is the oldest reservoir in the state of Kansas.

The field day is sponsored by Big Creek Middle Smoky Hill River Watersheds, Midway Extension District, Ellsworth County Conservation District and Natural Resource Conservation Service in Ellsworth. Speakers from K-State will include experts on soil science, cropping systems, and watershed management.

K-State experts to host field day about brush management in Ellsworth

A lot-tie agreement is being presented to the Great Bend City Council on Monday, Oct. 21. 

The Planning Commission considered the idea to allow for a property owner to merge smaller lots into a larger lot for zoning purposes. A lot-tie agreement would be carried out by the property owner whereby the owner agrees that the described lots and/or parcels shall be held under the same ownership and not sold separately unless approved by the city.

The City of Great Bend has many pieces of property at are owned contiguously by the citizens of Great Bend, and many are not combined. The merger of lots would allow for property owners to merge the smaller lots into a larger lot and allow them to add buildable area to their property.

Many times, in the past, the bank/mortgage company would not allow the parcels to be combined because of a lien on the property. This ordinance would allow the Inspections Department to issue a permit for building and zoning purposes after a lot-tie agreement was carried out.&nbsp;

Inspections have allowed the combining of lots in the past, but this would give the city a cleaner process to move forward with. Contiguous lots within the zoning district and not separated by a street or an alley, may be combined to create a larger lot. No lot-tie agreement shall be effective unless it is approved by the secretary of the Planning Commission similar to how the city treats lot-splits currently.

The lot-tie agreement shall not create a through lot that has more than three street frontages and does not increase a lot with a width or area greater than 200 percent of the average lot width or average.

A motion will be presented at Monday's meeting to adopt the new ordinance. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Great Bend to consider ordinance to merge property lots

Holy Family fifth grader Chase Perry makes it a general rule to be kind and respectful to everyone. That positive attitude has now come full circle as Chase is the second winner selected in Eagle Media's 2024-25 Make a Difference Contest. His good deeds came near and far from home.

"This summer, I gave food to homeless people in Honolulu, Hawaii while we were on vacation," he said, "and I had to jump in and save a boy in the pool last year."

As a winner in the Make a Difference Contest, Chase was handed a Great Bend Chamber gift certificate worth $100. His Holy Family teacher, Joan Henning, also received $100. She said Chase is a well-read student with a creative mind, and it comes as no surprise he would be recognized for making a difference.

"He's very kind to the other classmates and is always attentive to their needs," she said. "I can understand why he had some nice things to write about making a difference because he definitely does in our classroom, too."

Chase is the son of Jason Perry and Kelsey Sciacca. 

Make a Difference Contest forms were distributed to Barton County elementary schools in August. Eligible students can enter the contest by filling out the form and stating how they are making a difference in the world around them. Winners are randomly selected with the student winning a $100 chamber certificate and the nominating teacher winning $100. New winners will be drawn each month through May.

The winning student will also get a visit from Eagle Media staff and be featured on a radio news broadcast. This year's contest is powered by the following sponsors:

More recently, former President Trump made alarming comments about “enemies within” that hint at the use of military force against his political opponents, while Vice President Harris is struggling with a reticence among men of color to vote for her. Despite all this, the election itself may come down to a far more traditional, pocketbook issue.

The last time Americans experienced high inflation was in the 1970s. Many older Americans have forgotten, while many younger Americans were not around to experience it. Should the Fed keep going and fight inflation even harder– perhaps even starting a cycle of deflation? If they did, the result could be traumatic. When the Fed finally&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.federalreservehistory.org/essays/great-inflation">brought inflation to heel in the early 1980s</a>, interest rates were far higher than they are now, unemployment was in the double digits, and the<a target="_blank" href="https://www.iowapbs.org/iowapathways/mypath/2422/farm-crisis-1980s">&nbsp;farm economy was absolutely devastated</a>. By contrast,<a target="_blank" href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/LNS14000024">&nbsp;today’s unemployment rates</a>&nbsp;are historically low.

Americans are also, specifically concerned about housing. Post-pandemic&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.goldmansachs.com/insights/articles/us-house-prices-are-forecast-to-rise-more-than-4-percent-next-year">demand for housing is surging</a>, but supply is not keeping up. Loosening up building restrictions and zoning codes seem like good answers, but the American system of government throws up a roadblock:&nbsp; state laws– including here in Kansas– delegate most of these regulations to local governments, creating a patchwork of codes and zoning laws that builders and rehabbers must navigate in order to create and rehabilitate more housing. The recent&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://johnsoncountypost.com/2023/10/05/prairie-village-housing-timeline-214778/">rejection of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in Prairie Village</a>, and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kshb.com/news/local-news/lenexa-city-council-votes-down-controversial-proposal-for-homeless-shelter-in-city">denial of rezoning for a homeless shelter in Lenexa</a>, are both examples of the Not In My Backyard (NIMBY) politics that keeps housing choices limited. In addition, when developers do move in, they often prefer to build upscale apartments or large, single-family units in exclusive neighborhoods where the profit margin is greatest, doing little to relieve the shortage of&nbsp;affordable&nbsp;homes.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://immigrationforum.org/article/immigrant-construction-workers-in-the-united-states/">current anti-immigration political climate also contributes to the problem</a>&nbsp;by threatening to limit the number of workers in the construction industry. If Trump is elected and proceeds with plans for mass deportations, the problem will only worsen. Of course, immigrants need homes, too, but research shows that they contribute far more to&nbsp;lowering&nbsp;the cost of housing by working in construction, than they contribute to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/jd-vance-debate-immigration-housing-prices-real-estate-federal-reserve/#:~:text=Still%2C%20there%20is%20some%20evidence,but%20although%20a%20small%20one.">raising it through increased demand.</a>&nbsp;

Insight Kansas: What is really going on with inflation?

The fourth-annual event is set for Saturday, Nov. 16, at Brit Spaugh Park near the Zoo. Those who bring two non-perishable food items will not only support Sunflower individuals with special needs, they will help add to the shelves of the Community Food Bank of Barton County.

“This is a great opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities and delays, while providing nourishment for those who need a helping hand,” said Cody Harris, Sunflower director of Planned Giving and Community Support. “The Turkey Trot has been popular for the last three years and we hope for a good turnout this time around too.”

The early-bird-registration deadline is Oct. 31; the fee for the 5K race is $30 and Fun Run Race is $25. Both are $5 more after the deadline. Early registrants will receive T-shirts; after Oct. 31, shirts are available while supplies last.

Registration at the event begins at 9:30 a.m. The 5K starts at 10:30 a.m. and the Fun Run one-mile race a few minutes later. It all begins and ends at Brit Spaugh Park.

Those who have donations for the food bank will be entered into a drawing for a Garmin watch.

Age divisions for the 5K are: up to 14; 15-24; 25-34; 35-44; 45-54; and 55 and older. Medals go to the top three finishers in each division.

The overall male and female winners receive a turkey. Fun run participants earn ribbons.

“This event promises to be a lot of fun,” Harris commented. “You can walk, run or trot for children and adults who rely on Sunflower’s many programs and services, as well as those who need our local food bank.

“We encourage local and area residents to mark this on their calendars. From waffles to snickerdoodles to pet treats, the 2024 recipe book from the Kansas Wheat Commission has something for everyone to try and enjoy. This year’s edition holds extra significance as each recipe celebrates the legacies of two home baking industry leaders - Sharon Davis and Charlene Patton - who dedicated their careers to bringing the joy of baking into countless homes and classrooms.&nbsp;

“This year’s recipe book recognizes the years of service of Sharon and Charlene as they move on to their next set of adventures,” said Cindy Falk, Kansas Wheat nutrition educator and co-director of the National Festival of Breads. “Join us in thanking these wheat industry leaders for their tireless efforts to educate all ages about wheat foods and home baking by ordering a recipe book and trying one of their favorite recipes.”

The two women retired earlier this year from their roles as leaders in the Home Baking Association. Their contributions to the world of baking are immense, from educating families and classrooms to inspiring a love for wheat foods across generations. The recipes included in the 2024 recipe book provide a glimpse into their careers and baking traditions. Now, I’m thankful to share some of my personal recipes from those years.”

Charlene noted that her love for baking was instilled by her mother and grandmothers and has been passed down to her daughters and grandchildren. A few years ago, a pair of Great Bend Halloween traditions joined to create one big event. The Downtown Halloween Trick-or-Treat Event, presented by Great Bend Kiwanis, returns on Saturday, Oct. 26. The community trunk-or-treat at the end of the parade is sponsored by local churches. Kiwanis member Amanda Urban said the fun begins at 11 a.m. that day.

"It starts at Jack Kilby Square, then it heads north down to 16th," she said. "It crosses over, heading south then, all the way to 12th Street, crossing over and heading north again and coming back down Main Street. We do hang a right there on Lakin and go down to the end of the block."

The walking parade ends at Rosewood Winery at Lakin and Kansas, then the trick-or-treaters cross the street for the trunk-or-treat. Urban thanked the many businesses and churches that make the event possible.

"Then we have others that are coming down that, if their business isn't on Main Street, they will come down and set up a booth," she said. "Also, the police department, they're sending a crew there to help us patrol the cross walks and are probably giving out candy. The Barton County Sheriff's Office got ahold me me today. They're going to come down and give out candy."

Great Bend Fire/EMS will also join the parade route and hand out candy. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.

Cool-season forages require annual fertilization for optimum production. Fall is a good time to plan on fertilizing cool-season improved pasture or hayfields of perennial grasses such as smooth brome. Particular attention must be paid to nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and pH. Ideally a soil sample should be taken before-hand to know how much of each nutrient you need. If you need information on how to take correct soil samples for bromegrass contact your local Extension Office. We have soil probes you can check out to do it as well.

Balanced fertility is essential. For example, adding nitrogen will not produce optimum yields if phosphorus is low. Soils low in phosphate limit plant and root growth. Fertilizer should be applied by broadcasting in the fall or before spring growth begins.

Nitrogen Source - nitrogen management is critical for optimum smooth brome production. Several nitrogen sources are available—liquid nitrogen solutions, urea, ammonium nitrate, and anhydrous ammonia. Anhydrous ammonia is not extensively used on permanent pastures because application is difficult. Nitrogen source research generally has shown little difference among sources under most conditions. When urea fertilizers—including liquid nitrogen—are applied to moist soils covered with grass residue, an enzyme called urease can break down the urea to ammonia, which is lost to the air. This can occur fairly rapidly when moist conditions are followed by warm temperatures, and rapid drying occurs without rain to move the urea into the soil. If urea is applied from November through February, volatilization loss should be minimal.

Application Timing - when brome is grazed or hayed in the fall, the yearly nitrogen application should be split. If adequate soil moisture is available for good growth in late August and early September, apply all phosphorus and potassium indicated by a soil test plus half of the nitrogen recommended per acre. Then before the soil freezes in November or December, apply the remainder of the nitrogen recommended for haying or grazing. Split or late fall applications generally initiate earlier green-up in the spring.

Eagle Media's news week in review

Back in the day, Kevin Lockwood enjoyed tinkering with Chevy Camaros but soon realized he wanted to combine his interest in vehicle restoration with his passion for local history.

	One result is the nearly complete restoration of an Oshkosh 4-wheel- drive snowblower. But this isn’t just any old snowblower.

	“It was at our Great Bend Army Air Field for its entire working life,” said Lockwood, Great Bend. “It came here during World War II when the air base opened in 1943.

	“It was extremely cold with lots of snow that winter of 1943-44 and air crews needed to keep runways clear for takeoffs and landings.”

	The air base was a site for pilot training on the B-29 bomber.

	Lockwood bought the machine from the City of Great Bend at a surplus auction around the year 2000. It weighs 7-and-a-quarter tons and is equipped with a SNOGO attachment.

	The truck sat in the back of Lockwood’s shop for years and restoration began in 2022.

	“That’s when we turned the first wrench and started to take it apart,” recalled Lockwood who co-owns Parts Inc. with his brother, Kenton. “It was complete but, obviously, in a state of deterioration.

	“Nevertheless, it was drivable and had brakes. The wood in the cab was rotten and had to be replaced with the help of a carpenter. We assessed both engines and took them apart to check that they were mechanically sound.”

	Currently, Lockwood needs a few small components to finish the cab. But what he really has his eye out for is a SNOGO TU3 radiator from Dubuque, Ia.

“I have this passion for wrenching on vehicles and making things operate, while combining the history with the hands-on work,” Lockwood noted. “This machine has a tangible link to our county.

	“I have a personal, sentimental purpose because of Great Bend,” he continued. “I want to bring to light this important part of World War II history. Even if you aren’t interested in history, this creates conversation about the air base.”

	While some people realize the air field was a B-29 training ground, they may not be aware that about 6,500 soldiers, nurses, other hospital staff and support crews were assigned to the air base.

“There was the air field and a hospital here and these people came to Great Bend to serve their country,” Lockwood explained, noting some even made their homes here after the war.

At the recent Great Bend Airfest where the snowblower was on display, “there were more than a few eyebrows raised when people read the plaque that summarizes the machine’s history,” Lockwood said. “It is highly unusual to know the pedigree of something like this. It is the lone surviving vehicle associated with the air field.”

	Once the restoration is fully complete, the truck could be available to the City in the event of a major snow storm. And Lockwood knows exactly who would operate it.

	If a major snowstorm should hit Great Bend, Terra Sanders will most likely be in the driver’s seat to complement the City’s other snow removal efforts. She has decades of experience in her position as Operator II for Great Bend Airport where she has served the community for 32 years.

Sanders is the last person to operate the snowblower before the city sold it to Lockwood.

	Because she is the go-to person for the truck, Lockwood named it after her. “Miss Terra” graces the driver’s side door.

	“This means a lot to me,” Sanders said. “It is the biggest honor I have working for the City.”

	The namesake recalls that she was 19 years old when she signed on with the City. Within a couple of hours of joining the Airport staff, Sanders was running a loader during a blizzard.

	“This gives me a sense of pride,” she commented. “It was great starting out when I was younger and now, after all these years, I still love the job and the old snowblower. When I drove it from storage to the Airfest and back I heard someone say ‘can her smile get any bigger?’”

	Sanders also noted that she is “just in awe” at the extent of the truck’s restoration. “Kevin and his crew did an amazing job on this massive machine. It has the capacity to take on a 6-foot-by-6-foot snowbank. It would annihilate it – turn it to powder.

	“I am ready to operate it again anytime a big snowstorm comes along.”

 </figure>Back in the day, Kevin Lockwood enjoyed tinkering with Chevy Camaros but soon realized he wanted to combine his interest in vehicle restoration with his passion for local history.	One result is the nearly complete restoration of an Oshkosh 4-wheel- drive snowblower. But this isn’t just any old snowblower.	“It was at our Great Bend Army Air Field for its entire working life,” said Lockwood, Great Bend. “It came here during World War II when the air base opened in 1943.	“It was extremely cold with lots of snow that winter of 1943-44 and air crews needed to keep runways clear for takeoffs and landings.”	The air base was a site for pilot training on the B-29 bomber.<figure>

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Kia Rio driven by William K. Selfridge, 44, Hoisington, was westbound on U.S. 281 four miles west of Hoisington.&nbsp;

The Kia struck the trailer of an eastbound 2004 Chevy Silverado driven by Rodney B.&nbsp;Furrow, 65, Ellinwood, who was attempting to make a turn northbound onto U.S. 281 from Kansas 4.

EMS transported Selfridge&nbsp;Clara Barton Medical Center. Furrow was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The Barton Community College Theatre Department will hold auditions for its spring production of the new musical “Sing, Sing Blues,” by Barton Psychology Instructor Eric Smith at 2 p.m. Nov. 2 and 3 in the Fine Arts Auditorium, and all roles and technical positions will be cast on those two days.

The story centers around a group of men housed in the historic&nbsp;Sing Sing prison in New York.&nbsp; Roles will include the six inmates and four of their wives.&nbsp; Anyone 18 and over will be considered.&nbsp; Those auditioning do not need to prepare anything but will need to dress comfortably to move and dance.

There will be multiple showings Feb. 20-23. TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.3% in September. This is unchanged from 3.3% in August and an increase from 2.6% in September 2023.

“The Kansas unemployment rate held steady at 3.3% in September,” said labor economist, Emilie Doerksen. “The labor force participation rate was also unchanged over the month at 66.2%, significantly higher than the U.S. rate of 62.7%.”

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 2,700 from August. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 800 over the month, mwhile government increased by 1,900.

The unemployment rate in Barton County dropped from 3.7 percent in August to 3.3 percent in September.&nbsp;The jobless rate is also down significantly in Russell, Ellsworth and Pawnee counties.&nbsp;

Since September 2023 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 19,200. This change is due to an

increase of 16,500 private sector jobs and an increase of 2,700 government jobs.

The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) recognized 243 public school districts and eight private systems through the 2024 Kansans Can Star Recognition Program that has been in place since the 2019-20 school year.

Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson announced the recipients of this year’s awards during the Kansas State Board of Education’s October meeting. The recipients will also be announced and celebrated at KSDE’s annual conference, Great Ideas in Education: Lighting the Path Forward, Oct. 23-25, in Wichita.

The program honors districts and systems for excelling in outcomes established around the vision for education in the state – Kansas leads the world in the success of each student.

The vision was announced in 2015 by the Kansas State Board of Education and KSDE. A new accreditation model, Kansas Education Systems Accreditation (KESA), was announced shortly after. KESA accredits at the system level to create systemic change among school buildings in a district. The second iteration of the accreditation system, KESA 2.0, is in full implementation as of the start of the 2024-25 school year.

The Kansans Can Star Recognition Program is designed to support the KESA process by providing a level of recognition that helps districts identify where they want to focus their improvement efforts.

The program recognizes district achievement in eight areas, which are broken into quantitative and qualitative measures. Districts must apply for recognition in the qualitative measures area.

District recognition in the quantitative measures area is automatically calculated by KSDE based on collected district data. No application is necessary.

Districts can receive gold, silver, bronze or copper stars in the quantitative measure areas of:

The Commissioner’s Award recognizes districts that outperform their predicted postsecondary effectiveness rate above a .40 standard deviation.

A district’s predicted postsecondary effectiveness rate factors in the degree to which identified risk factors known to depress effectiveness rates, such as poverty, chronic absenteeism and student mobility, are present in a district’s student population.

Districts that outperform their predictive rate by .4-.99 standard deviation receive the&nbsp;Commissioner’s Award. There were 44 districts/systems that achieved this award for 2024.

Districts that outperform their predictive rate by 1-1.99 standard deviations receive the&nbsp;Commissioner’s Award with Honors. There were 32 districts that achieved this award for 2024.

There were 44 districts/systems that achieved this award for 2024.Districts that outperform their predictive rate by 1-1.99 standard deviations receive the&nbsp;Commissioner’s Award with Honors. There were 32 districts that achieved this award for 2024.Districts that outperform their predictive rate by 2 or more standard deviations receive the&nbsp;Commissioner’s Award with Highest Distinction. Local school districts recognized for excelling in state's vision

The city-wide cleanup in Great Bend has been a resounding success in its first two years. Residents got rid of 235 tons of tires in the first two years and filled 51 commercial-sized dumpsters the first year. The nine-day cleanup returns this Saturday at Sunflower Diversified Services, 5606 10th Street, but City Administrator Logan Burns said there are changes this year.

"The biggest thing this year is we're not going to be taking any tires just because of the huge expense that did have," he said. "We feel like we're at a point where we'll probably stop that for a couple of years and see where that leads us. The other thing is making sure we don't have any construction waste or any household hazardous waste as well."

Items accepted this year include refuse, metal, mattresses, and appliances. Recyclable items may be dropped off at Sunflower.

"Sunflower Diversified is going to be taking all of their usual items with office paper, magazines, newspapers, corrugated cardboard, tin cans, plastic bottles, plastic milk jugs, aluminum cans, and glass bottles," Burns said. "But then we'll have dumpsters for metal, mattresses, and appliances as well."

The cleanup will run from Oct. 19 through Oct. 27. The site will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the first Saturday (Oct. 19), from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays, and from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. City staff will again be present to assist with unloading.
