For the first time since 2002, the Barton Community College men's basketball team is now the nation's top ranked team as the Cougars have moved up a spot in the latest and final regular season NJCAA Division I poll.

Victors of 17 straight, Barton is 26-1 on the season in replacing South Plains College as the Texans were knocked from the unbeaten Thursday 76-69 at Howard College in slipping to 26-1.

Most recently the Cougars survived its own threat to derail its win streak by surviving 70-68 as Mozae Downing-Rivers' short jumper with 2.3 seconds provided the final difference maker hosting Garden City Community College.

Barton received ten of the fourteen first place votes in the poll for 346 points with South Plains garnering the other four top spot votes in sliding to second with 340 points. A distant third with 314 points was the one spot move up by Triton College followed by the three spot climb of Salt Lake Community College (307 points) and Vincennes University (295 points). Joining South Plains in taking a hit last week, Daytona State College fell from third to seventh while Mineral Area College also dropped out of the top five to the eighth spot of the poll.

Fellow Region VI members Cowley College, who has the lone victory over Barton this season, moved up one spot to 11th with Saturday's home opponent Hutchinson Community College staying steady at No. 15 while Butler Community College falls out of the poll.

Two games up with three to play in the conference standings at 20-1, Barton has one regular season home contest left in between a pair of road contests in the hunt for its first conference title since the 2008-09 season.

The Cougars' quest with the bullseye attached begins on Wednesday in a 7:30 p.m. tip at Dodge City Community College, a contest if victorious would secure at least a share of the title.

Looming next is Saturday's 7:30 p.m. hosting of the Blue Dragons on "Pink Out Night" with sophomore recognition taking place in between the women's and men's contests.

Barton will then close out the regular season Tuesday, March 5th, at Colby Community College before having a week's wait until hosting a second round Region VI playoff contest on March 12.

Beginning the '02-03 season as the nation's top ranked preseason team, the Cougars held the ranking through the first ten games of the year until being knocked off 100-98 in double overtimes by Neosho County Community College on November 30 in the Cougar Booster Club/Walnut Bowl Classic.

Hutchinson stays No. 1 in NJCAA Women's Poll

Now it’s Houston’s turn at the top of The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll. The Cougars moved to No. 1 for the first time this season in Monday’s latest poll. They climbed one spot to end reigning national champion Connecticut’s six-week stay there. Houston became the fifth team to hold the top spot this season after an overtime win at Baylor. Purdue was No. 2 while UConn fell to third. The poll's new additions included South Florida at No. 25 for that program's first-ever appearance. No. 22 Utah State and No. 23 Gonzaga rejoined the poll.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Freshman S'Mya Nichols scored 22 points to lead Kansas to a 58-55 win over No. 10 Kansas State on Sunday.

Taiyanna Jackson added 11 points and Holly Kersgieter scored 10 for Kansas (16-11, 9-7 Big 12), which closed out the victory with an 11-4 run and improved to 6-1 in its last seven games.

“This is the best memory I have of Allen Fieldhouse,” Kersgieter, a super senior, said of her final game against rival Kansas State. “Whether you’re playing for a championship, or whatever, having a home rivalry game against the top-10 team at a crucial moment in the season, I thought to myself, ‘This is the best moment.’”

Kansas coach Brandon Schneider, who is in his ninth season at Kansas, agreed.

“Obviously winning the NIT championship was great last year, but this team is fighting for an NCAA Tournament berth," he said. "I think a top-10 win late in the year is one of those that you add to the resume.”

Ayoka Lee scored 14 points and Taryn Sides added 11 for Kansas State (23-5, 12-4), which has gone 3-4 in its last seven games.

“I thought Kansas outplayed us down the stretch in a tight ballgame all the way around,” Kansas State coach Jeff Mittie said. “They executed their stuff better than we did. They did a real good job of disrupting some things for us. And we didn’t play with as much poise as we needed to play with.”

Mittie said Lee is still working her way back into game shape after missing multiple games with injuries.

“She hasn’t had a lot of reps,” he said. “It wasn’t the type of injury that you’re able to get a lot of reps on. I think it’s going to take her a couple of weeks to get the feel around the rim.”

Kansas State held a 51-47 advantage before Kansas started its closing run. Nichols used a spin move for an open layup to tie the game at 51 with 3:31 left.

“We knew exactly what we were getting from her as a player, in terms of her skill level and our versatility,” Schneider said of his freshman star. “But until you start working with the player, you see the poise and composure and that side of it. I think she is far beyond her years of experience.”

Kersgieter hit a mid-range jumper to give Kansas the lead with 2:43 remaining. After Serena Sundell hit one of two free throws, Nichols scored to make it a three-point game, 55-52, with 2:03 remaining.

Sundell missed a contested layup on the next possession, and Kersgieter hit two free throws to give Kansas a five-point lead and added another to push the advantage to six points at 58-52 with 24.8 seconds left.

Sides hit a 3-pointer that pulled the Wildcats within 58-55, but her 3-point try at the buzzer bounced off the rim.

“I was thinking, ‘Stay out,’” Schneider said with a laugh. “It's like rooting against a putt.”

The third quarter ended with the Wildcats clinging to a 43-42 lead after the teams traded buckets most of the period. Nichols scored seven of Kansas' 14 points in the third quarter.

Kansas State: The Wildcats will be tough to stop once Ayoka Lee is at full strength. Lee is working into shape after missing multiple games due to injury.

— Caitlin Clark scored 24 points on the way to her 16th career
triple-double, Hannah Stuelke added 20 and No. 4 Iowa defeated
Illinois 101-85. Clark had 15 rebounds and 10 assists for her
Division I-leading fifth triple-double of the season as Iowa bounced
back from a loss to No. 14 Indiana. Clark, the nation’s leading
scorer at 32.1 points per game, went 6 of 18 from the field,
including 5 of 14 in 3-pointers. Makira Cook led Illinois with 26
points.

been suspended for one game for instigating an on-court altercation
that happened during the Heat-Pelicans game on Friday night. Miami’s
Thomas Bryant and New Orleans’ Jose Alvarado were both handed
three-game suspensions for fighting and leaving the bench area.
Miami’s Nikola Jovic also got a one-game suspension for leaving the
bench area and entering the altercation.

video surfaced Sunday that appeared to show 2015 NFL Most Valuable
Player Cam Newton being involved in a scuffle at a 7-on-7 youth
football tournament in Atlanta. The video shows Newton, wearing one
of his custom-made hats, being shoved by three people near the top of
a set of steps before the altercation moves toward a fence line. The
video lasts less than 30 seconds before the altercation is broken up
by a policeman and event security at the WeBall Sports x DynastyU 7v7
tournament at B.E.S.T. Academy. Newton, the No. 1 overall pick in
2011 out of Auburn, does not appear to throw any punches in the
video, although there is one punch thrown in his direction. It’s
unclear if the punch landed on the former quarterback.

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) —
Daniel Suarez edged Ryan Blaney and Kyle Busch in a three-wide finish
to win a crashed-filled NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor
Speedway. Busch, who won the Trucks race on Saturday, moved to the
middle between Blaney, the 2023 Cup Series champion, and Suarez to
set the stage for the dramatic finish. Suarez earned his second
career Cup Series win in his Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet. Blaney was
second, only three one-thousands of a second behind. Busch was third.
A massive pileup of at least 16 cars on the race’s second lap set
the pace for a procession of wrecks.

VALLARTA, Mexico
(AP) — Jake Knapp has won the Mexico Open, and it wasn't easy until
the end. Knapp had a four-shot lead going into the final round. That
was cut in half in three holes and gone after seven holes. But the
29-year-old rookie from UCLA never lost the lead. He hit only two
fairways and leaned on a short game that carried him to a 71. He won
by two shots over Sami Valimaki. The victory gives Knapp a spot in
the Masters and the PGA Championship. He also gets into the remaining
five signature events with a $20 million purse.

Cody Bellinger is going back to the Chicago Cubs, agreeing to an $80
million, three-year contract, according to a person familiar with the
deal. The slugger can opt out of the deal after each of the first two
years. The person confirmed the agreement to The Associated Press on
condition of anonymity because it was pending a physical. Bellinger’s
return would be a big win for the Cubs, who waited into spring
training as the center fielder explored his options in free agency.
He hit a career-best .307 with 26 homers, 97 RBIs and 20 steals in
130 games for Chicago in 2023.

The bronze Jackie Robinson cleats that were left behind when a statue of the first player to break Major League Baseball’s color barrier was stolen from a Kansas park are being donated to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

Thieves cut the statue off at its ankles last month, leaving only the feet behind at McAdams Park in Wichita. About 600 children play there in a youth baseball league called League 42. It is named after Robinson’ s uniform number with the Brooklyn Dodgers, with whom he broke the major leagues’ color barrier in 1947.

Bob Lutz, executive director of the Little League nonprofit that commissioned the sculpture, said the museum in Kansas City, Missouri, was “enthusiastic” about incorporating the cleats into its display on Robinson.

The display also includes a damaged plaque honoring Robinson. The sign was erected in 2001 outside the birthplace of Robinson near Cairo, Georgia. Community members there discovered last year that someone had shot the plaque multiple times.

“It’s kind of sad in its own way, that we’re building this little shrine of Jackie Robinson stuff that has been defaced or damaged,” said Bob Kendrick, the president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. “But it gives us an opportunity to speak to who he was, the characteristics and value of what he represented, even in the face of adversity. And that message really never goes out of style.”

Robinson played for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues before joining the Brooklyn Dodgers, paving the way for generations of Black American ballplayers. He’s considered not only a sports legend but also a civil rights icon. Robinson died in 1972.

Fire crews found burned remnants of his statue five days after the theft while responding to a trash can fire at another park about 7 miles (11.27 kilometers) away. One man was charged this month in the theft. Police said there was no evidence it was a hate-motivated crime, but rather the intent was to sell the metal for scrap.

Donations poured in after the theft, totaling around $300,000, Lutz said. The amount includes a $100,000 gift from Major League Baseball.

Lutz, whose friend, the artist John Parsons, made the statue before his death, said the mold is still viable and anticipated that a replacement can be erected within a matter of months. He estimated it would cost around $45,000 to replace the statue itself. While there also will be security and lighting expenses, that leaves lots of extra money that can be used to enhance some of the league's programming and facilities, Lutz said.

“It’s just amazing how many people are interested in this story,” Lutz said.

The Barton Community College softball team opened its conference season Saturday with 9-3 and 7-4 victories at Dodge City Community College.

The Cougars put three on the board in their first at-bat in leading throughout, tacking on another trio of tallies before clinching the opener with two more crossers in the seventh.

Barton again struck first in the backend of the doubleheader, putting two on the board in the first two frames then adding another pair in the fourth before turning back a Dodge City threat late to secure the sweep.

Snapping a three-game slide, Barton improves to 4-6 on the season while Dodge City remains winless at 0-12.

Next up is a Thursday twin bill at 15th ranked Butler Community College slated for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.

The Cougars pounded out 25 hits in the double dip, five each coming from Chloe Enslinger and Allyson McDougal including the pair of freshmen's first collegiate home runs.

Enslinger did most of her damage in the opener going 4-of-5 with 3 RBIs, pushing across Barton's first run on a single before leading off the third inning with the squad's first fence clearer of the season launching a 3-2 count, 8th pitch of the at-bat out to center field. Enslinger would later follow McDougal's RBI hit in the seventh with her third connection closing out the scoring.

Going 2-of-5 in the opener, McDougal moved up the lineup to the two-hole to collect base knocks on her first two at-bats to later drive a 1-0 pitch deep past the left field fence for her collegiate first staking Barton out to a 7-2 lead.

Barton's three doubles on the afternoon came in the nightcap, one coming from Laci Dryden leading off the two-run fourth frame as Mikaila Herring's first of two doubles putting the Cougars out to a 2-0 first inning lead.

Cougar Softball opens conference play with sweep at Dodge City

The Barton Community College baseball team dropped both ends of Saturday's doubleheader at Kansas City Kansas Community College 9-5 and 9-3 at the KCKCC Baseball Complex.

Dropping the three-game weekend set, the Cougars fall to 6-4 overall while the Blue Devils improved to 8-2 on the season.

Barton will return home to open a seven game homestand beginning Tuesday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader against the junior varsity squad of Kansas Wesleyan University before hosting a three-game weekend set against North Iowa Area Community College set for Friday and Saturday.

Piecing a two-out rally together in the top of the first, Owen Clyne's two-run triple and Kyler Horsman's RBI single gifted Barton a 3-0 lead.

Holding a 3-2 lead through three innings, Barton stretched the lead back to three runs in the top of the fourth as Cooper Tabor strung the first of three straight two-out singles setting up RBIs by Robby Bolin and Grant Nottlemann making it 5-2.

The tide shifted in the home fifth as a trio of walks, three hit-by-pitches and three errors accounted for a six run KCK inning and 8-5 deficit.

Bradley Feezer (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season going 3.0-innings and allowed one hit, six-runs, two earned with a walk and three strikeouts.

Kaluma was one of five players to score in double-figure for Kansas State, which had lost seven of its last eight games. (AP) — Darius Johnson had 16 points and five assists, Jaylin Sellers scored 15 points and UCF held No. 23 Texas Tech without a field goal for more than nine minutes in the second half en route to a 75-61 victory. MLBPA executive director Tony Clark said on Saturday that pitchers around the league are concerned about injuries now that the pitch clock is moving from 20 seconds to 18 seconds with men on base in 2024. The pitch clock will stay at 15 seconds with no one on base. MLB introduced a new rules package last season that radically cut game times by about 25 minutes, which was the quickest games have been played since 1984. MLB still wants to shave a few more minutes off game times, cutting the pitch clock even more for the upcoming season.

Bieniemy, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs, spent the past season in Washington. He wasn’t retained by new Commanders coach Dan Quinn, who replaced Ron Rivera. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson scored 20 points, KJ Adams had 16 and No. 9 Kansas beat Texas 86-67 on Saturday night.

All five Kansas starters scored in double figures as Johnny Furphy contributed 16, Dajuan Harris had 14 and Nicolas Timberlake scored 13.

“Games like this where we come out really good and stay even keeled are nice," Adams said. "It’s always a good time beating my hometown team, it’s definitely fun, but hopefully we get to play them again.”

Kansas (21-6, 9-5 Big 12) separated midway through the first half with a 12-0 run to take a 28-15 lead which was highlighted by two jams. Furphy back cut on a defender and threw it down between two Longhorns which started the run.

Two minutes later, Timberlake leaped over Dylan Disu for an alley-oop slam from Harris on a two-on-one fast break. The crowd erupted and Kansas used that momentum to distance themselves and take a 45-25 lead at halftime.

“He was really good today and hit some big shots and that alley-oop was massive," Furphy said about Timberlake.

The Jayhawks outscored Texas 52-34 in the paint, which led to Kansas shooting 32 of 52 or 62% from the field. Texas shot 26 of 62 or 42% from the field.

“We played great in the first half, we were terrific, bench was good and starters were great," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "When the ball moves like that and we guard like that, you’ll be in a favorable position, especially when you’re at home.”

Texas (17-10, 6-8) was led by Tyrese Hunter and Dillon Mitchell with 12 points each.

“I give Kansas a lot of credit tonight because they played at a very elite level," Texas coach Rodney Terry said. "They were ready to play and I didn’t do a great job of having my guys ready to play as far as what it takes to play at a place like this.”

The Jayhawks' Kevin McCullar Jr. missed the game due to a lingering knee injury. Before the game, Self said McCullar is considered “week to week.” He has missed four Big 12 games this season.

“My concern is if he will play again this season,” Self said. “I'd like to have him for the postseason. I'm hoping we have him back, but I'm not thinking it's going to be tomorrow or Monday.”

Texas: Poor shooting early haunted the Longhorns and they are now in a tie for ninth in the Big 12.

Kansas: Several dunks and a behind-the-back pass for a layup by Elmarko Jackson showcased an impressive first half from the Jayhawks. They showed that when they are hitting on all cylinders, they are as good as anyone in the country.

Texas: Travels to No. 23 Texas Tech on Tuesday night.

The Cougars managed to tie the game at 28 with 6:35 left in the half, but never took a lead. The Wildcats led 42-38 at the break, helped by Kaluma's 16 points and six rebounds. Perry added 10 points.

BYU was slowed by 40.8% (29 for 71) shooting overall, including 20% (6 for 30) from 3-point distance.

BYU: Like a lot of teams in the Big 12, BYU struggles on the road. The Cougars fell to 2-6 in conference road games.

Kansas State: Even with the victory, the Wildcats need a late-season run to earn a return to the NCAA Tournament.
