PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Rory McIlroy has won The Players Championship in a three-hole playoff against J.J. Spaun that lacked any real drama. McIlroy blasted a drive down the 16th fairway to set up a birdie. And then Spaun sailed over the island green on the par-3 17th and into the water for a triple bogey. McIlroy is the eighth multiple winner of the PGA Tour's premier championship. It's also the first time in his career he has won twice early in the season before the Masters. It was the first Monday finish in three years because of a four-hour rain delay on Sunday.

The Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to four-year extensions with receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, assuring that Joe Burrow will have his top two targets with him for some time. A person familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press that Chase will become the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, earning $161 million, including $112 million guaranteed. That surpasses the $40 million per year average by Cleveland pass rusher Myles Garrett. Higgins will get $115 million. The Bengals placed the franchise tag on Higgins, but were hopeful of getting a new deal done. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the move.

There was concern that attendance and overall interest in women’s college basketball would drop this year with the departure of Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and other stars for the WNBA. Both took a dip -- but only a dip. With JuJu Watkins and Paige Bueckers among those leading the way, attendance across the country was just short of last season’s record numbers. More networks showed more games on TV this season and ratings were strong heading into March Madness.

Auburn is the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, with Duke, Houston and Florida joining the Tigers on the No. 1 line in the March Madness bracket. The NCAA selection committee favored the regular-season champs of the record-setting Southeastern Conference despite three losses in their last four games, along with a loss to Duke back in December. A record-setting 14 teams from the SEC made the tournament.

Umea and Turbine Potsdam, European champions only 20 years ago, are among the unfashionable relics of yesteryear who know they can no longer compete. But they seem OK with that and are adjusting to a new reality in a changing financial landscape as women's soccer grows. Umea sporting director Jorgen Crovin says “I’m not in the least envious because these clubs are at a different level than we can ever achieve now.”

UCLA is the top overall seed in the women’s NCAA Tournament. The Bruins were joined by South Carolina, Southern California and Texas as No. 1 seeds that the NCAA revealed Sunday night. It’s the first time in school history that the Bruins are the top team in the tournament. They had two losses on the season, both of which came to the Trojans.

Congratulations to the 12 teams left in the chase for the women’s Division I national championship. Wait. We mean 68, right? Not really. Technically, yes, there are 68 teams in the women’s tournament field, but history tells us that only 12 have a chance to be the last team standing in Tampa in a few weeks at the Final Four. Since the NCAA women’s tournament was born in 1982, there have been 32 No. 1 seeds that have gone on to win the national championship, along with seven No. 2 seeds and three No. 3 seeds. That’s it. No other seeds need apply.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Caitlin Clark drew lots of eyeballs to women’s basketball when she led Iowa to consecutive national-championship games. She also attracted a lot of bettors who otherwise might have put their money elsewhere. Clark is starring for the WNBA’s Indiana Fever. But her impact is still being felt in women’s college basketball. BetMGM Sportsbook said it received 35% more money being bet on the sport this season, 39% more female bettors and 32% more customers regardless of gender. The NCAA Tournament begins this week.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Doc Rivers says he saw star potential in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander while coaching him as a rookie before the Los Angeles Clippers traded him to Oklahoma City. But the veteran coach concedes that Gilgeous-Alexander has drastically outperformed those expectations. Rivers was speaking before his Milwaukee Bucks lost 121-105 to Gilgeous-Alexander's Thunder on Sunday. Rivers said that "I don’t think anyone can honestly say they knew he was going to be this special.” Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging an NBA-leading 33 points and has scored at least 20 points in 62 consecutive games.

KJ Lewis added 15 points and Henri Veesaar scored eight of his 10 in the closing minutes for the Wildcats, who will play No. 2 Houston for the title on Saturday night. Kevin Overton had 20 points and Christian Anderson scored 19 for the Red Raiders, who played without Chance McMillian and Darrion Williams because of injuries, and then watched star forward JT Toppin throw up in the arena tunnel. Toppin finished with 11 points in 25 minutes.

Big 12 Semifinal recap, Championship Set

In a dogfight double-overtime semifinal at the Class 4A State Basketball Championship, the McPherson Bullpups take out the previously undefeated No. 1 Ottawa Cyclones with a 52-50 victory on Friday at the Tony's Pizza Events Center in Salina.

An extremely competitive game, McPherson held a narrow 29-28 lead at halftime. Ottawa surged in the third quarter, at one point led by seven, but McPherson rallied to tie the game. Both teams were strategic in the final quarter and the first overtime, both focused on clock management and defense. With neither side able to score in the first over time the game proceeded into a second overtime. In the final moments, McPherson senior Gabe Pyle executed a spin move and made a shot at the buzzer.

With the win the Bullpups head to their 3rd straight title game appearance and aim to score a 15th state title.

The championship game will be held at 4PM at the Tony's Pizza Events Center in Salina.

In a heart stopping boys quarterfinal matchup at the Class 1A Division I State Basketball Championship, the Central Plains Oilers edged out the Frankfort Wildcats with a final OT score of 54-44.

The game, held at Dodge City's United Wireless Arena, saw both teams battling fiercely for a spot in the semifinals. Brodie Crites led the Oilers with 21 points, Camden Stiles with 15 and Aiden Hekele with 11. Central Plains entered the tournament with a 18-4 record, while Frankfort stood at 18-6.

Central Plains will advance to face Olpe High School in the semifinals scheduled for Friday, March 14 at 4PM.&nbsp;

WASHINGTON (AP) — John Feinstein, one of the country's foremost sports writers and the author of numerous bestselling books, including the groundbreaking “A Season on the Brink” about college basketball coach&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bob-knight-death-indiana-army-college-basketball-c29a7cb601f64e9181564037e8c78758">Bob Knight</a>, died unexpectedly Thursday. Feinstein was 69.

He died of natural causes at his brother's home in McLean, Virginia, according to Robert Feinstein, who said he discovered John's body.

John Feinstein was a full-time reporter for The Washington Post from 1977 to 1991, a commentator for outlets such as ESPN and the Golf Channel and a voter for more than 20 years in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">AP Top 25</a>&nbsp;men's college basketball poll. He remained with the Post as a contributing columnist, and he also hosted satellite radio programs on SiriusXM.

“He was very passionate about things,” Robert Feinstein said in a telephone interview. “People either loved him or hated him — and equally strongly.”

John Feinstein — always a storyteller, whether via the written word or when chatting with other journalists in an arena's media room or press box — was working until the time of his death. He was in Washington this week to cover the Atlantic 10 Tournament, and he&nbsp;<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2025/03/13/tom-izzo-michigan-state/">filed a column for the Post</a>&nbsp;about Michigan State coach Tom Izzo that appeared online Thursday.

Feinstein was comfortable writing about an array of sports, including golf and tennis, but he was known most for his connection to college basketball because of “A Season on the Brink.” He took a leave of absence from the Post in 1985 to embed with Knight's Indiana team, and the book highlighted the author's flair for the dramatic and ability to capture his subjects' personalities.

Knight's reputation for having a hot temper was well-established by then, and Feinstein brought it to life. Feinstein also effectively portrayed the personal relationships Knight had with his players, which alternated between warm and abusive.

Feinstein went on to write more than 40 books, including “A Good Walk Spoiled” (1995), about professional golf, and “A Civil War” (1996), about the Army-Navy football game. After that book's publication, he worked for many years as a radio commentator for Navy football.

“The Ancient Eight,” about Ivy League football, was published last year. Feinstein also wrote sports novels aimed at younger readers.

In addition to Robert, John Feinstein is survived by his wife, Christine, daughters Brigid and Jayne, and son Danny, as well as a sister, Margaret.

PITTSBURG — Pittsburg State University Vice President for Athletics &amp; Recreation&nbsp;<a href="https://pittstategorillas.com/staff-directory/jim-johnson/17">Jim Johnson</a>&nbsp;announced today (Mar. 13) that Megan Besecker has been hired as the Gorillas head volleyball coach.

Besecker becomes the 12th&nbsp;head coach in program history. She succeeds Jen Gomez who resigned from the position earlier this week to become the Athletics &amp; Activities Director at Pittsburg High School. Gomez had served as Pitt State's head coach for nine seasons, from 2016-2024.

"I am extremely excited and honored for the opportunity to join the Pitt State family," Besecker said. Besecker comes to Pittsburg State after serving the past two seasons as head coach at Barton Community College in Great Bend, where she guided the Cougars to back-to-back Kansas Jayhawk Conference titles and a fourth-place finish at the 2024 NJCAA National Tournament.

Overall, Besecker compiled a 58-10 (.853) record at Barton, including a 33-4 mark this past fall. She was selected the KJCCC and the AVCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year, while also garnering the AVCA's 30 Under 30 Award recognition in 2024. During her two-year tenure at Barton, Besecker coached one All-American, two KJCCC Player of the Year honorees, a KJCCC Freshman of the Year and seven first-team All-Conference honorees.

Prior to Barton, Besecker served as an assistant coach at Florida SouthWestern College for one season, helping head coach Thais Baziquetto-Allen lead the Bucs to a 27-1 record and the NJCAA Division I National Championship in 2022. Florida SouthWestern captured Suncoast Conference and FCSAA State Championships along the way. She helped coach the 2022 NJCAA and AVCA National Player of the Year in Barbara Koehler.

Besecker also served as an assistant coach at MIAA rival Emporia State University in 2021 after spending the 2019 and 2020 seasons as head coach in her hometown at Liberal (Kan.) High School.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for Pittsburg State University to embrace and welcome one of the rising stars in the intercollegiate volleyball coaching ranks into the Gorillas family," Johnson said. TOKYO (AP) — Hundreds of fans at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport lined up 10 deep and hoping to catch a glimpse of Shohei Ohtani as he arrived. But they saw nothing of the Los Angeles Dodgers superstar. What they saw was a 40-meter-long temporary white wall to shield the players in case they came through the arrival area. The Chicago Cubs exited the same way when they arrived late Wednesday night. But the players didn’t make it to the arrival area, apparently taking an escape route.

The Los Angles Rams cut Super Bowl 56 MVP Cooper Kupp after being unable to find a trade partner for their former No. 1 wide receiver. The Rams moved on from the 2021 AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year at the start of the league year. Kupp announced last month that the Rams were trying to trade him despite his desire to remain with the team. But with him being owed $20 million this season, no other team was willing to make a trade.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota has fired coach Ben Johnson after four years of repeatedly rebuilding rosters at his alma mater. Johnson had two seasons remaining on his contract, which calls for a $2.92 million buyout. His annual salary was $1.95 million, the lowest in the 18-team league. The Gophers finished 15-17 after losing to Northwestern in the first round of the conference tournament. Athletic director Mark Coyle announced his decision after a late-night meeting with Johnson upon the team’s return from Indianapolis. Minnesota went 56-71 under the 44-year-old Johnson, including 22-57 in league play.

Mercedes, which has a new driver lineup this year that sees rookie prospect Andrea Kimi Antonelli join George Russell, is hoping to emerge from its recent lean spell in F1 that has seen it score just five wins from the last three seasons, four of which came in 2024. But while Verstappen was reportedly on Mercedes’ shopping list last year as a top-gun replacement for its then-outgoing star Lewis Hamilton, Silver Arrows’ team boss Wolff says extending Russell’s contract beyond 2025 is the priority.
