The college football rankings are in for a shakeup after a historic weekend for the Associated Press Top 25. Five of the top seven teams, including No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Notre Dame, lost on the same day for the first time since the poll began in 1936. Miami, now 6-0, is set to take the top spot after a double-overtime win against Florida State. Ohio State, BYU, Mississippi, and Texas Tech are also eyeing promotions. The big question is how far Georgia, Notre Dame and Indiana will fall after their close losses.
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Notre Dame might have deserved one more play at the end of its game at BYU. Florida State was furious over how referees saw its two Hail Mary completions for would-have-been touchdowns in double overtime against Miami. And once again, end-of-game officiating was under fire. Dramatic — and sometimes controversial — endings were the story of a wild college football Saturday, with late-game calls deciding some outcomes and potentially even having an effect on how the College Football Playoff shapes up a couple months from now.
ATLANTA (AP) — Chicago quarterback Caleb Williams is active and expected to start for the Bears against the Atlanta Falcons after missing three games with a right hamstring injury. Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. also is active and expected to start after leaving last week’s 30-23 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens with a rib injury. Penix suffered the rib injury in the fourth quarter and Tua Tagovailoa threw an interception in overtime to end the game. Williams and Penix were listed as having full participation in practice this week. Williams expressed confidence on Thursday he would be ready to start against Atlanta.
PROVO, Utah (AP) — Bear Bachmeier threw a go-ahead touchdown pass with 1:47 left and then No. 8 BYU stopped No. 2 Notre Dame at the goal line to preserve a riveting 28-24 victory. The Fighting Irish’s last chance to win the game, an incomplete pass in the end zone from inside the 10-yard line with time running down, shouldn’t have been the final play, according to the Big 12. The conference says "it was determined that time remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground." The thriller capped a wild Saturday in which five of the top 8 teams in the AP Top 25 lost on the same regular-season day for the first time, per Sportradar.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Quarterback Jalen Hurts was placed on injured reserve Saturday, two days after the Philadelphia Eagles revealed he has a blood clot in his calf. Hurts was initially ruled out Thursday for the Eagles' upcoming game against Carolina. The Eagles said then that Hurts was injured when he took a cleat to his calf area on Oct. 4 against the Los Angeles Rams. Hurts informed the medical staff of the injury after practice on Oct. 8. The Super Bowl 59 MVP was back at practice the next day before the team left for London to play Jacksonville.
College football has never experienced a Saturday like this. Five of the top seven teams in the AP Top 25 lost on the same day in the regular season for the first time in history. The last time anything even remotely close happened was on Jan. 2, 1989, according to Sportradar. Shakeup Saturday was driven by the Southeastern Conference, with No. 1 Georgia, No. 6 Alabama and No. 7 Texas going down as touchdown or more favorites. No. 2 Notre Dame (at No. 8 BYU) and fifth-ranked Indiana (against No. 4 Ohio State) also lost. The chaos cleared a path for No. 3 Miami to take over the top poll spot.
Manchester City fans have revived the club's 1980s craze of bringing inflatable bananas to matches. It comes with the club in the eye of a storm after being found guilty of large-scale financial misconduct in one of the biggest scandals in English soccer history. The fans are responding to a grave situation with defiance and even some humor, with the blow-up fruit a symbol of it all. It harks back to a time when City had a striker called Imre Varadi who was a fans’ favorite and got the affectionate nickname “Imre Banana” from supporters. That's believed to be the reason why fans started turning up for City games with large, inflatable bananas to lighten the mood amid tough times.
BRIGHTON, England (AP) — Diego Gomez did a Beckham by scoring a goal from the halfway line in the Premier League in Brighton's 5-0 win over Crystal Palace. The Paraguay international collected the ball just inside his own half and advanced just into Palace’s half before launching a 50-meter shot over goalkeeper Walter Benitez and into the net for a spectacular goal in the seventh minute of the match at Amex Stadium. Gomez's goal revived memories of a strike from a similar range from David Beckham when playing for Manchester United against Wimbledon on the opening day of the 1996-97 Premier League season. It is one of English soccer’s most famous goals and thrust Beckham into the spotlight.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Cam Boozer finds himself in an unfamiliar space as he embarks on the NBA career he has prepared for his entire life. He’s on his own. Father Carlos, a two-time NBA All-Star and 13-year veteran, is just a phone call or text away. The biggest difference for Cam on the court and in daily life is twin brother Cadyn isn’t in Memphis with him. Cayden stayed in college at Duke when Can decided to enter the NBA draft. The Grizzlies are hoping the AP men's college basketball player of the year can help kick-start their latest rebuilding project.
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump says he plans to close a historic golf course in the nation's capital for 15 months and redevelop it despite an ongoing court challenge to his renovation plans. Trump posted on social media about his plans to have the East Potomac Golf Course close starting Nov. 15 to make it, in his words, “one of the Best and Most Spectacular Golf Courses anywhere.” But a judge last week ordered a halt to his redevelopment plans until at least Oct. 26. The judge scolded the government for starting a large-scale tree removal at the course over a holiday weekend while providing little notice to the court or those trying to stop the golf makeover.
