Star players tend to gain headlines. Role players are appreciated by hardcore fans. Coaches are the face of a program. But what about everyone else behind making a team successful?
Student managers are often in charge of the most important parts of making a team game-ready, handling equipment, game balls, uniforms, and more. Hoisington senior manager Logan Wagner says, talking about his weekly routine, the job is more complex than people might think.
"Day-to-day basis, practices. Mondays we just put jerseys away from Friday night, and get JV out if they have home games. We have two managers go to JV every week basically. Tuesdays. We all get our own practice schedule. We set the clock. Which, practice starts different times on different days. 3:50, we have to make sure the clock is set at 60 minutes right as 3:50 hits.
"We all have our own jobs. I kind of just boss everybody around. Whatever needs to be done. Getting things out, supervising. Wednesdays, Same deal. Thursdays are a little bit different.
Hoisington travels to play Garden Plain on Friday. No music, no clock, just because it's a shorter practice. And then Friday's gameday. Away games are a lot more chaotic. We have a lot shorter time to get everything loaded on away games than we do home game."
Hoisington will play one more of those road games on Friday, October 23rd, as they travel to take on Garden Plain in the regular season finale.
