Witt leads Royals against the Red Sox after 4-hit outing

(AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. had four hits, Kris Bubic pitched seven
innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 10-0 to
complete a four-game series sweep. Salvador Perez had three RBIs as
the Royals posted their sixth consecutive win. Jonathan India had two
hits, two RBIs and scored three times. Bubic allowed six hits, struck
out seven and walked one. Chris Stratton and Steven Cruz each got
three outs for the Royals, finishing a six-hitter. Kansas City scored
its first six runs on two-out hits.

PITTSBURGH (AP) —
The Pittsburgh Pirates have fired manager Derek Shelton following a
rocky opening month to the season that saw Pittsburgh quickly slip
into last place in the NL Central. General manager Ben Cherington
made the announcement. Bench coach Don Kelly will take over for
Shelton. The decision comes with Pittsburgh riding a seven-game
losing streak that dropped its record to 12-26. Shelton, hired by
Cherington in November 2019 as part of a franchise-wide reset by
owner Bob Nutting, went 306-440 in five-plus seasons with the
Pirates.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) —
Julius Randle had 24 points and 11 assists to lead the Minnesota
Timberwolves through another uneven performance, this time
capitalizing on Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry’s absence
in a 117-93 victory that tied the second-round series at one game
apiece. Anthony Edwards finished with 20 points after an injury scare
as the Wolves more than tripled their 3-point output from their Game
1 loss when Curry suffered the left hamstring strain. The injury will
likely sideline Curry at least until next week. Jonathan Kuminga had
18 points and Trayce Jackson-Davis had 15 points for the Warriors off
the bench.

Leon Draisaitl took a pass from Connor McDavid and scored off the
rush at 15:20 of overtime to give the Edmonton Oilers a 5-4 victory
over the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday night and a 2-0 lead in the
second-round series. After failing to capitalize on a five-minute
power play when Vegas defenseman Nicolas Roy was assessed a major
penalty for cross-checking 5:37 into overtime, the Oilers didn’t
waste the opportunity later when the NHL’s most dynamic offensive
duo combined for the winner. Vasily Podkolzin, Jake Walman, Darnell
Nurse and Evander Kane also scored for the Oilers, and Viktor
Arvidsson and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each had two assists. Calvin
Pickard made 28 saves. Game 3 is Saturday night in Edmonton.

— Joel Quenneville is returning to the NHL with the Anaheim Ducks
for his first head coaching job since the second-winningest coach in
league history resigned and was banned from the league for his
handling of a sexual assault scandal. The 66-year-old Quenneville was
hired by Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek for his first coaching job
since his resignation from the Florida Panthers 3 1/2 years ago in
the wake of his handling of the sexual assault scandal during his
tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks. Before his departure, Quenneville
spent parts of 25 NHL seasons behind the benches of St. Louis,
Colorado, Chicago and Florida.

Life has certainly become more stressful and challenging since that infamous month of March of 2020 when a never-imagined pandemic brought everyone to their knees.

While the panic eventually subsided and slowly but surely life resumed, the effects of the shutdown continue to persist today. The pandemic and many events that followed certainly have challenged the mental wellness of millions of people across the globe.

Fortunately, high school sports and performing arts activities have been an elixir for the 12 million-plus students involved in these programs annually. Additionally, ensuring the mental wellness of participants in high school activities is of utmost importance. 

The month of May can be particularly stressful for high school student-athletes – from seniors graduating and facing a future beyond high school, to the pressure to succeed in state championships, to the outside influence of social media and other factors. 

During the month of May, which is designated Mental Health Awareness Month, high school coaches and administrators should take extra time to be aware of potential symptoms of students struggling with their physical and mental health. 

The NFHS is continuing its #WeSeeYou campaign, which is designed to empower coaches to be able to assist students who are dealing with mental health challenges. The goal is to create a culture of caring in school communities where everyone feels seen and supported, especially high school students.

Fortunately, over time, the stigma associated with addressing mental health has lessened. In many ways, most people at one time or another have felt the pressures of life and wondered how to keep going. It is OK to need – and ask for – help.

Mental health is defined as a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to the community.

Following are a few tips for leaders in schools to help high school students facing even more challenges during this busy month:

Acknowledge and connect with all students. Everyone wants to be seen by someone who matters to them – parent, teacher, coach.

Be sure to see students for who they really are, not who they may appear to be on social media.

Create a culture where everyone is looking out for each other.

Realize how important your influence may be in the lives of students.  

While most high school students will not experience a mental health crisis, many are facing stressors and challenges they have never faced before. It is the job of everyone involved in the lives of these students – parents, coaches, teachers, administrators – to offer support and guidance.

One new resource offered by the NFHS is a free online course on the NFHS Learning Center (www.NFHSLearn.com) entitled “Coaching Mental Wellness.” The course was created to help coaches support students with issues they are facing on and off the fields and courts. The course highlights various strategies to deal with mental health issues in a positive manner.

The course begins with a framework for wellness, which discusses the importance of nutrition, sleep and exercise. The materials suggest that when sleep is disrupted by a busy schedule, stress or illness, it can have a negative impact on mood, energy and the ability to get things done.

Another chapter offers ways that coaches can help students who are dealing with mental health challenges, including expressing concern, listening, being available and understanding the struggles with anxiety. The course offers strategies to help students who are dealing with depression, including empathy, discussing the issues, writing a new script and replacing negative thoughts with positive ones.

Openly talking about mental health struggles and sharing personal experiences helps to normalize the issue and encourages more people to seek support. Let’s be open to everyone around us who may need help and support.

In many ways, most people at one time or another have felt the pressures of life and wondered how to keep going. It is OK to need – and ask for – help.Mental health is defined as a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to the community.Following are a few tips for leaders in schools to help high school students facing even more challenges during this busy month:Acknowledge and connect with all students. Everyone wants to be seen by someone who matters to them – parent, teacher, coach.Be sure to see students for who they really are, not who they may appear to be on social media.Create a culture where everyone is looking out for each other.Realize how important your influence may be in the lives of students. While most high school students will not experience a mental health crisis, many are facing stressors and challenges they have never faced before. It is the job of everyone involved in the lives of these students – parents, coaches, teachers, administrators – to offer support and guidance.One new resource offered by the NFHS is a free online course on the NFHS Learning Center (www.NFHSLearn.com) entitled “Coaching Mental Wellness.” The course was created to help coaches support students with issues they are facing on and off the fields and courts. The course highlights various strategies to deal with mental health issues in a positive manner.The course begins with a framework for wellness, which discusses the importance of nutrition, sleep and exercise. The materials suggest that when sleep is disrupted by a busy schedule, stress or illness, it can have a negative impact on mood, energy and the ability to get things done.Another chapter offers ways that coaches can help students who are dealing with mental health challenges, including expressing concern, listening, being available and understanding the struggles with anxiety. The awards, which were voted on by each of the league head coaches, include four individuals from two different conference institutions bringing home major accolades.

Major award winners from the 2025 regular season are Most Valuable Player Maria Avendano Fori of Garden City, Pitcher of the Year Meliea Ingram of Barton, Newcomer of the Year Daryelin Rivas Chavez of Garden City, and Coach of the Year Carson DuBose of Barton.

Hitting a staggering .581 in conference play with a 1.070 slugging percentage, Chavez struck out only three times in 154 plate appearances and saw 63 of her hits go for extra bases. Her 146 total bases rank 13th nationally while also ranking in the top 20 in home runs and stolen bases.

DuBose named KJCAA Coach of the Year, Ingram Pitcher of the Year

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. hit a two-run homer to give Michael Wacha all the support he needed as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-1 on Wednesday night.

It was the third straight quality start for Wacha (2-4), who allowed just three hits in seven innings, walked one and struck out five.

The Royals, who won for the 14th time in their last 16 games, lead the majors with 18 quality starts.

The White Sox got a run in the ninth off Carlos Estévez on a single by Luis Robert, but left the tying run stranded at third. Estévez allowed one run and three hits, but struck out two, including Josh Rojas for the final out to earn his 11th save.

Both starting pitchers were effective early on a damp, cool night. With a mist falling and game-time temperatures in the low 60s, Wacha and Cannon each threw four scoreless innings.

But while Wacha threw up another zero in the top of the fifth, Cannon ran into trouble in the bottom of the inning. Luke Maile led off with a single and, with two outs, Witt hit his fifth homer of the season to left field.

The Golden State Warriors are planning to play without Stephen Curry
for at least the next three games of their second-round series

school recruits who were promised spots that were later rescinded and
would last for as long as those players are eligible in college.

two orthopedic surgeons that he'll never be able to return to playing

retire from the game." Rising played parts of four seasons at
Utah between 2020 and 2024. The 2022 season was his best. The
Ventura, California, native passed for 3,034 yards and 26 touchdowns

The NHL team in Salt
Lake City is now known as the Utah Mammoth. Owners Ryan and Ashley
Smith unveiled the franchise’s permanent name Wednesday after more
than a year of fan input and voting. Mammoth replaces the inaugural
season placeholder name Utah Hockey Club, which was also one of the
three finalists, along with Outlaws. Yeti was taken out of
consideration when the cooler company bearing that name could not
come to a copyright agreement with Utah ownership. The Mammoth are

The 2nd ranked Barton Community College women's track and field team won five events over three days resulting in a runner-up placing at the 2025 Region 6 Outdoor Championships held at Coffeyville's Veterans Memorial Stadium.

For the second straight year, the Cougars won the meet's opening event before adding four more golds as part of their 17 scoring performances in compiling a solid second place total of 122 points. Cloud County captured nine events in winning the team crown with 197 points as Hutchinson finished in third on 95 points.

Adding three new qualifiers to its list, Barton will have over thirty entries for the season finale NJCAA Division I Championships held May 15-17 at Hutchinson's Gowans Stadium.

Cedricka Williams accounted for 22 of the Cougars' points in being named the Field Athlete of the Meet, the second consecutive year the program has won the award.

Williams fell short of breaking her national record discus mark for the third straight meet but still set a facility record of 52.99m, 173-10 leading a Barton 1-2-3 finish in the event. Ivanilda Semedo, who already owns the program's second furthest throw, placed runner-up at 49.19m (161-04) with Zadie Mackey in third at 43.42m (142-05).

The sophomore standout was also one of three new qualifying performances for the squad, competing in the javelin for the first time, staking a third place 39.66m (130-01) qualifying mark. Joining Mackey as already qualified in the hammer throw as well, Williams added another six points for the squad by placing third at 47.73m (156-0) with Mackey in the fifth spot at 45.07m (147-1).

Winning six of the seven heptathlon events, Alexia Walker won the program's second straight multi-event Region title in accumulating a program 10th most 4814 points for a 394 point victory. The freshman posted four personal best efforts along the way including a national qualifying long jump mark, won the 200m leg of the two-day competition in her first time running the distance, then capped off her title with a two second cushion in the final 800m run.

Two days later, Walker also competed in the 400m hurdles for the first time by punching another national qualifying ticket in finishing fifth at 1:05.10.

An additional pair of Barton's titles came in the hurdle events, Natasha Fox winning the 400m version in 1:00.82 as Kialia Claiborne's 1:03.49 time finished fourth ahead of Walker.

On the 100m track, Asharria Ulett clocked a 13.68 in the hurdle prelims with an even better personal best 13.66 for Region champion honors while in the straight sprint, Keliza Smith's 11.46 placed third as six of the eight placers set a facility record. Making just her first start in the event of her sophomore season in the day's prior preliminary round, Smith blazed the track in 11.25 to improve her program's 5th fastest all-time clocking. Kayda Austin qualified for finals on a 11.75 time but sat out for the final round with Kennidra Spigner's 11.98 finishing 13th.

The speed trio also competed in the 200m, Smith's 23.75 and Austin's 23.93 qualifying for but sitting out the final round with Kennidra Spigner in the 16th spot at 24.95.

Barton's other gold came in Saturday's triple jump as freshman Celine Riddle followed her indoor title with the outdoor crown at 11.99m (39-04.00) after failing to post a mark a day prior in the long jump to defend her indoor championship.

Both of Barton's relays came up shy in their respective races, the 4x100m crew of Smith, Austin, Ulett, and Spigner just .03secs out of the top spot at 46.06 as the 4x400m crew of Narissa McPherson, Shone Walters, Claiborne, and Fox were one of two teams breaking the facility record in settling for second pace on a 3:44.23 time.

Williams' top field award helps lead 2nd ranked Barton women to runner-up placing at Region 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt singled with the bases loaded to cap a crazy rally in the bottom of the ninth as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3 on Tuesday night.

It was the second walk-off hit of Witt's career, following a game-ending grand slam in 2023.

Mark Canha coaxed a walk off Cam Boozer (0-3) to lead off the ninth. Drew Waters hit a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mlb.com/video/cam-booser-in-play-no-out-to-drew-waters?partnerId=web_video-playback-page_video-share">popup that went off second baseman Chase Meidroth's head</a>&nbsp;into right field, but Michael A. Taylor's throw was wide at second. Freddy Fermin bunted for a hit to load the bases. After Kyle Isbel popped out, Jonathan India drove in the tying run with a fielder's choice and Witt followed with a single to center.

Taylor Clarke (1-0) earned the win in relief.

The White Sox got on the board first with an RBI single from Brooks Baldwin in the fourth, scoring Matt Thaiss.

Thaiss led off the sixth with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. He went to third on a ground out and scored when Vaughn's grounder went under the glove of third baseman Jonathan India for an error.

Isbel led off the bottom of the sixth with a line drive home run that just cleared the fence in right center.

The White Sox added a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Josh Rojas to make it 3-1.

Salvador Perez had a double in the eighth, scoring Vinnie Pasquantino, to pull the Royals within one.

The Royals had first and second with one out, trailing 2-1 in the seventh. However, reliever Steven Wilson got Fermin to foul out and then retired Isbel on a fielder's choice to end the inning.

The White Sox have lost nine straight at Kauffman Stadium, their most ever in Kansas City.

Witt has RBI single in 9th to rally Royals to 4-3 win over White Sox

Making a somewhat surprising challenge for the title, the 9th ranked Barton Community College men's track and field team led the 2025 Region 6 Outdoor Championships with two events remaining in settling for second place.

Five individual titles among the Cougars' 21 scoring performances over two days of competition at Coffeyville's Veterans Memorial Stadium compiled 127 points for a solid runner-up team placing. Hutchinson, who overtook the Cougars with twelve points in the second to last event of the 5000m, won the program's first title since 2013 on an accumulated 135 points as Coffeyville's 84 points was enough for a third placing.

Adding a pair of new national qualifiers among its 8 personal and/or season bests, Barton will have over twenty entries for the season finale NJCAA Division I Championships held May 15-17 at Hutchinson's Gowans Stadium.

Seventy-four of the Cougars' points came in the field events, Trevon Hamer's pair of golds in the long jump and triple jump leading to a 31-point performance earning the Men's High Point Athlete of the Meet with Ricardo Hayles being named the Field Athlete of the Meet behind a gold and silver performance in the throws.

Placing runner-up in the long jump of the indoor season, Hamer soared to the outdoor title on a 7.52m (24-08.25) mark then followed on Saturday with the triple jump crown at 16.03m (52-07.25).

In addition to his jumping titles, Hamer also contributed 11 points on the track beginning with Barton's runner-up 4x100m tandem of Aragorn Straker, Joshua Mascall, and Wanyae Belle in clocking a 40.16. Running third leg during the 4x400m relay squad with Keadro Gordon, Belle, then handing off to Corlando Chambers, Hamer and the Cougars with the title out of reach cruised to a 6th place finish at 3:21.55.

Chambers and Gordon helped the Cougars to a Friday relay title, teaming with Jasiah Clapp and Simeon Adams to post a facility record and program's 6th fastest 4x800 time of 7:37.10.

Hayles' 18 of Barton's 54 points in the throws came on a discus winning and facility record 55.10m (180-09) mark joined by a runner-up shot put throw of 16.06m (52-08.25). The discus title was the program's second straight Region crown.

In addition to Hayles' discus title, Jaylon Calder took the third spot at 46.90m (153-10) with DeAndre Bristol in fourth at 43.92m (144-01). In the shot put, the Cougars also posted three scoring performances, Calder's 15.42m (50-07.25) placing 3rd behind Hayles with Bristol in 6th on a personal best 14.18m (46.06.25) mark.

Bristol contributed an additional ten points, placing runner-up in the javelin on a personal best 61.17m (200-08) mark with a 7th place finish in the hammer throw on another personal best of 46.26m (151-09). Boris Peranovic led the Cougars in the hammer by exceeding his personal best by over seven feet for a 52.78m (173-02) mark with Barker giving Barton its third best effort in the event by marking a 43.50m (142-08) to place 13th.

Belle led the Cougars on the track, adding to his relay contributions with a 200m title run of 20.77 and a 3rd placing in the 100m on a personal best 10.20 in being joined by Perrion Williams' best time of 10.27 for 6th place as new national qualifiers. Straker, who just missed out on the 100m finals by .003 of a second with a 10.55 time, clocked a 200m preliminary round 21.11 but pulled up late in the finals to still finish fourth.

Barton grabbed another eight points in the 800m, Gordon's 5th place time of 1:54.32, less than a second ahead of Chambers' 1:55.13 as Clapp secured the final 8th spot at 1:56.03.

 </figure>By TODD MOORE Barton Sports InfoMaking a somewhat surprising challenge for the title, the 9th ranked Barton Community College men's track and field team led the 2025 Region 6 Outdoor Championships with two events remaining in settling for second place.Five individual titles among the Cougars' 21 scoring performances over two days of competition at Coffeyville's Veterans Memorial Stadium compiled 127 points for a solid runner-up team placing. Hutchinson, who overtook the Cougars with twelve points in the second to last event of the 5000m, won the program's first title since 2013 on an accumulated 135 points as Coffeyville's 84 points was enough for a third placing.Adding a pair of new national qualifiers among its 8 personal and/or season bests, Barton will have over twenty entries for the season finale NJCAA Division I Championships held May 15-17 at Hutchinson's Gowans Stadium.Seventy-four of the Cougars' points came in the field events, Trevon Hamer's pair of golds in the long jump and triple jump leading to a 31-point performance earning the Men's High Point Athlete of the Meet with Ricardo Hayles being named the Field Athlete of the Meet behind a gold and silver performance in the throws.Placing runner-up in the long jump of the indoor season, Hamer soared to the outdoor title on a 7.52m (24-08.25) mark then followed on Saturday with the triple jump crown at 16.03m (52-07.25).In addition to his jumping titles, Hamer also contributed 11 points on the track beginning with Barton's runner-up 4x100m tandem of Aragorn Straker, Joshua Mascall, and Wanyae Belle in clocking a 40.16. Running third leg during the 4x400m relay squad with Keadro Gordon, Belle, then handing off to Corlando Chambers, Hamer and the Cougars with the title out of reach cruised to a 6th place finish at 3:21.55.Chambers and Gordon helped the Cougars to a Friday relay title, teaming with Jasiah Clapp and Simeon Adams to post a facility record and program's 6th fastest 4x800 time of 7:37.10.Hayles' 18 of Barton's 54 points in the throws came on a discus winning and facility record 55.10m (180-09) mark joined by a runner-up shot put throw of 16.06m (52-08.25). The discus title was the program's second straight Region crown.In addition to Hayles' discus title, Jaylon Calder took the third spot at 46.90m (153-10) with DeAndre Bristol in fourth at 43.92m (144-01). In the shot put, the Cougars also posted three scoring performances, Calder's 15.42m (50-07.25) placing 3rd behind Hayles with Bristol in 6th on a personal best 14.18m (46.06.25) mark.Bristol contributed an additional ten points, placing runner-up in the javelin on a personal best 61.17m (200-08) mark with a 7th place finish in the hammer throw on another personal best of 46.26m (151-09). Boris Peranovic led the Cougars in the hammer by exceeding his personal best by over seven feet for a 52.78m (173-02) mark with Barker giving Barton its third best effort in the event by marking a 43.50m (142-08) to place 13th.Belle led the Cougars on the track, adding to his relay contributions with a 200m title run of 20.77 and a 3rd placing in the 100m on a personal best 10.20 in being joined by Perrion Williams' best time of 10.27 for 6th place as new national qualifiers. 9th ranked Barton men challenge for Region 6 Track and Field title

KANSAS CITY, Mo.
(AP) — Bobby Witt singled with the bases loaded to cap a crazy
rally in the bottom of the ninth as the Kansas City Royals beat the
Chicago White Sox 4-3. It was the second walk-off hit of Witt’s
career, following a game-ending grand slam in 2023. Mark Canha coaxed
a walk off Cam Boozer (0-3) to lead off the ninth. Drew Waters hit a
popup that went off second baseman Chase Meidroth’s head into right
field, but Michael A. Taylor’s throw was wide at second. Freddy
Fermin bunted for a hit to load the bases. After Kyle Isbel popped
out, Jonathan India drove in the tying run with a fielder’s choice
and Witt followed with a single to center. Taylor Clarke (1-0) earned
the win in relief.

ST. LOUIS (AP) —
Alec Burleson hit a two-run double, Matthew Liberatore struck out
eight in a season-high seven innings and the St. Louis Cardinals beat
the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1. Liberatore (3-3) allowed one run on three
hits and three walks as the Cardinals won a season-high fourth game
in a row. Gordon Graceffo earned his first career save. Paul Skenes
(3-4) allowed two runs on three hits in six innings, striking out six
and walking four as Pittsburgh lost its sixth straight game and for
the ninth time in its last 10 games. Skenes fell to 0-4 in five
career starts against St. Louis.

IRVING, Texas (AP) —
Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark has received a three-year contract
extension through 2030. ESPN first reported the Big 12 board of
directors agreed to extend his original five-year contract, which was
set to expire in 2027. Yormark was CEO of the Roc Nation
entertainment company when he was hired to take over for Bob Bowlsby
in 2022. Yormark landed a six-year television contract valued at
$2.28 billion and shepherded the move of Colorado, Arizona, Arizona
State and Utah to the Big 12 following the disintegration of the
Pac-12.

Scott Frost received
a five-year, $22.1 million contract upon his return to UCF and will
have it automatically extended a year if the Knights appear in a bowl
this season. An executive summary of Frost’s contract was obtained
by The Associated Press through an open records request. UCF rehired
Frost in December after Gus Malzahn left after four seasons to become
offensive coordinator at Florida State. Frost had his first head
coaching job at UCF in 2016 and left for Nebraska after two seasons.
He is set to make $3.9 million this year.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) —
Golden State star Stephen Curry was sidelined by a strained left
hamstring early in the second quarter at Minnesota and the Warriors
were bracing for an extended absence of their sharpshooting leader
after opening the series by beating the Timberwolves 99-88. Curry
will have an MRI exam. His status is day to day, but coach Steve Kerr
acknowledged it’s unlikely he’ll be available to play in Game 2.
Curry grabbed at the back of his left leg after hitting a 14-foot
floater and immediately headed back to the locker room. He had 13
points in 13 minutes on 5-for-9 shooting.

CLEVELAND (AP) —
Tyrese Haliburton made a 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds remaining and the
Indiana Pacers scored the final eight points in 47.9 seconds to stun
the short handed and top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers 120-119 to take a
2-0 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinals series. Haliburton
scored 11 of his 19 points in the final 12 minutes. Donovan Mitchell
scored 48 points for Cleveland, who were missing three key players,
including two starters. Myles Turner and Aaron Nesmith led Indiana
with 23 points apiece. It's the first time the Pacers won the first
two games of a playoff series on the road since 1994 against Orlando.

WASHINGTON (AP) —
Jaccob Slavin scored in overtime, Frederik Andersen made 13 saves in
his return from injury and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the
Washington Capitals 2-1 in Game 1 of their second-round playoff
series. Logan Stankoven started the comeback with his goal midway
through the third period off a turnover. After failing to score on a
power play late in regulation, Slavin scored 3:06 into OT from just
inside the blue line to give Carolina the series lead.

LAS VEGAS (AP) —
Zach Hyman scored from just above the right circle with 3:02 left to
put Edmonton ahead for good, and the Oilers rallied yet again this
postseason to beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 in Game 1 of the
second-round series. The Oilers, who came back from 2-0 down, set an
NHL record with their fifth consecutive playoff comeback victory.
Vegas, which had just seven shots on goal over the final two periods,
lost a playoff game in regulation after leading by at least two goals
for the first time. The Golden Knights are 47-4 overall in the
postseason with such leads. Game 2 is Thursday night in Las Vegas.
Leon Draisaitl had a goal and an assist for the Oilers, and Corey
Perry and Connor Brown also scored. Mark Stone scored twice for
Vegas.

PITTSBURGH (AP) —
Baseball players from major leaguers to Little Leaguers are using
sliding mitts as a form of self-expression, even if at some levels,
they're not needed at all. The padded gloves are designed to protect
a player's hand when they slide headfirst to reach for a base. The
equipment was first introduced by former major leaguer Scott
Podsednik in the late 2000s. The market has exploded in the last 16
years, with millions of mitts being sold each season to players at
all levels in a wide array of colors and designs. At the youth
levels, it's all about fashion over function. Most leagues ban or
limit headfirst slides for players 12 and under. That hasn't stopped
them from being in heavy demand anyway.

Wednesday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

By BILL FAFLIC KSHSAA Executive DirectorWhen students are involved in education-based activities, they are better! We all know the connection with peers, with coaches and sponsors, and to the community support their academic success as well as their physical health and mental wellness. However, can some students take it too far and be doing too much? Earlier in April, I listened intently to the doctors, athletic trainers, school nurses and school leaders serving on the KSHSAA Sports Medicine Academy as they talked about a significant concern becoming more prevalent in their work with students. That topic is burnout. While the discussion was focused on supporting the many students who experience overuse injury, it also included students who have lost the love of the game. It was reported:Over 50% of high school athletes report training related injuries which contribute to mental and physical exhaustion which can lead to burnout.Teenagers who overtrain are also at a higher risk of eating disorders and sleep problems.36% of high school student-athletes report feeling burned out because they feel pressure to succeed from their coaches and parents.30-40% of young athletes experience burnout at some point in their sports careers and 70% of kids drop out of organized sports by age 13.Overtraining and burnout are linked to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.While I support the notion of learning to work hard to achieve at the highest level, many of our students are exhausted. We need to teach our students to work smarter, not necessarily more! As we prepare for summer, which has been transformed from an opportunity for students and coaches to recharge and pursue options not possible during the school year, into a fight for more training and more competition. Is it too much?The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends students not spend more than 5 days a week playing or practicing one sport and 2-3 months per year of no organized sports. The KSHSAA SMAC suggested a general rule of thumb for a student is for the maximum hours of training, practice and competition per week to not exceed the age of the student or 16 hours per week (whichever is less).As you head to summer, I encourage you to lead the discussion on how less can be more.
