Tabor and Friends claim KCAC Baseball and Softball Championships

Day three of the NJCAA Division I National Tennis Championships took out two more of the 11th ranked Barton Community College women's tennis team members as Angelina Gnezdilova stands as the lone survivor headed into day four in Tucson, Arizona.

Gnezdilova, who dropped her opening No. 1 flight match on Saturday, had a day of rest from singles play on Sunday before getting back to the swing of things today. Beginning her Consolation side of the bracket bright and early this morning, the 12th ranked Cougar dispatched Tanyaradzwa Kaome of Mississippi Gulf Coast 8-3 in the Quarterfinals. Returning to the court early afternoon, Gnezdilova again won by the same 8-3 commanding score over Laura Coulome of Eastern Arizona College to earn her second straight Consolation Finals berth as last year she rolled to the No. 4 flight back draw title. Standing in her way of a second title is Italia Jones of Wallace State as the two will tangle at 9:30 a.m. central time on Tuesday.

Clara Penido and Azul Barrios were Barton's last survivors of the Championship side of the bracket as each won two matches headed into today's Quarterfinals.

Pulling off a No. 2 flight national ranking upset on Sunday, 36th ranked and 8th seeded Penido's second bid to end a competitor's season was handled by Destinee Martins of Tyler Junior College as the top seed and nationally 2nd ranked Apache marched on to the Semifinals with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Barrios was looking for revenge in the No. 4 flight, matching up against Region VI foe Saara Kunkunova of Cowley College who defeated the Cougar in three sets back on April 12. However in Monday's desert plains it wasn't Barrios' day as the 3rd seed and 30th nationally ranked Tiger advanced to the Semifinals with twin 6-2 set victories.

As a team, Barton's strong start atop the standings slipped to tenth after day two and will conclude its final day on Tuesday in hopes of its second straight top ten national finish.

Barton's Gnezdilova wins pair advancing to Consolation Finals at NJCAA Tennis Championships

BALTIMORE (AP) — Tyler Wells pitched six strong innings to earn his first victory of the season and the Baltimore Orioles used a six-run fifth inning Monday afternoon to surge past the Kansas City Royals 6-1.

Baltimore has won four of five for the first time this season and finished its homestand 6-4. Kansas City fell to a season-high eight games under .500.

The game was a makeup of Saturday’s postponed game to cap a rain-altered series. Friday’s game was washed out and made up as part of a doubleheader the teams split Sunday.

Wells (1-2) allowed Ryan O’Hearn’s two-out RBI single in the first, but cruised through the rest of his start. He retired 16 of the last 19 batters he faced and struck out three in the longest outing of his major-league career.

The 27-year-old right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019 and missed all of the 2019 and 2020 seasons, then pitched out of the Orioles’ bullpen as a Rule 5 pick last season. He made his sixth start Monday and threw 54 strikes among his career-high 75 pitches.

“Knowing they don’t strike out a lot, it’s really just kind of making sure I’m mixing up my pitches well, not trying to strike guys out, trying to get quick outs,” Wells said. “We have a whole infield and outfield for that.”

Kansas City has dropped seven of its past nine games and scored just 22 runs in that span. The Royals were 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position Monday.

“We have to figure out how to put crooked numbers together by just stacking hits on top of each other,” Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said. “They’re just hard to come by right now.”

The Orioles had only four hits in their fifth-inning rally against Royals starter Carlos Hernández (0-2). A walk, Anthony Bemboom’s double and Jorge Mateo’s RBI single tied it with one out. Bemboom came around when catcher MJ Melendez’s errant throw on Mateo’s steal of second sailed into center field.

Hernández was on the verge of escaping further damage when he struck out Cedric Mullins. But Trey Mancini singled in Mateo, and Hernández issued a walk and hit a batter before his wild pitch scored Mancini. Ryan Mountcastle then lined a single to score two more runs.

“That inning was a keep-the-line-moving type of attitude,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said.

Hernández allowed six runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out two.

Royals: Kansas City placed OF Edward Olivares (right quad strain) on the 10-day injured list and recalled C Sebastian Rivero from Double-A Northwest Arkansas. Rivero had served as the 27th man during Sunday’s doubleheader.

Orioles: Mountcastle was in the lineup as the designated hitter after rolling an ankle while stealing second base in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader. “Watching that again, it didn’t look good,” Hyde said. “We dodged a bullet there.”

Overall, day two action at the Reffkin Tennis Center left the Cougars with the pair of Quarterfinal berths while three seasons ended on the court with another three ending due to injury defaults. Top flight competitor Angelina Gnezdilova had the day off, set to resume Monday at 9:30 a.m. in the Consolation Quarterfinal round.

Penido, 36th nationally ranked and the No. 2 flight 8th seed, pulled off an upset according to the national rankings in defeating 26th ranked Viktoriia Fedorva of Collin College 6-4 and 6-2. Next up is a Monday, 9:30 a.m. Quarterfinal bout against top seeded and 2nd ranked Destinee Martins of Tyler Junior College.

Seeded 6th in the No. 4 flight, Barrios dispatched Sarah Forsyth from State College of Florida 6-4 and 6-2. Like Penido, Barrios will also begin her Monday Quarterfinal match at 9:30 a.m., but will do so against a familiar fellow Region VI member, 3rd seeded and 30th ranked Saara Kunkunova of Cowley College. The national stage tangle will be a rematch of their epic April 12 three set battle, splitting the first two sets as Kunkunova took the first set 7-5 and Barrios claiming the second 6-2, with Kunkunova prevailing 10-7 for the victory.

Paula Curci took the lone loss on the court, falling 6-2, 6-2 to 7th seeded Marija Ristanovic of Weatherford College to end her singles play for the season.

Other losses on the court to end the season in the Round of 16 came in doubles play. The No. 1 flight tandem of Gnezdilova/Penido fell 6-4, 6-2 to 3rd seeded and 3rd ranked Valeriia Cherfus/Naomi McKenzie of St. Petersburg College with the No. 2 flight duo of Barrios/Curci lost by the same 6-4, 6-2 scores to 5th seeded and 14th ranked Mariia Koroleva/Camila Neyra of Cowley College.

Malena Hernandez and Jacie Roth both defaulted from their 3rd and 6th flight Round of 16 matches respectively, to then also have to withdrawal from their No. 3 flight doubles.

The Barton Community College softball team's postseason run came to an end with a pair of losses Saturday at the Region VI Tournament held at Legends Park in Dodge City, KS.

Coming off an 11-9 offensive shootout victory Friday over Garden City, the Cougar bats would be silenced to just two runs and seven hits in their pair of games on Saturday.

Held to just one hit in the opener falling to the elimination side of the bracket dropping a five inning 10-0 result to 6th ranked Butler Community College, the Barton sticks continued to search for the key knock just 20-minutes later manufacturing just two runs on six hits falling on the short end 3-2, to Colby Community College closing the 2022 campaign at 25-22.&nbsp;

Barton Softball concludes season in day two of Region VI Tournament

BALTIMORE (AP) — Bruce Zimmermann threw six effective innings and Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 to earn a doubleheader split on Sunday.

The Royals won the opener 6-4 when Michael Taylor hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth after a pair of two-out Baltimore errors.

In the second game, Zimmermann (2-1) allowed two runs and five hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

“That’s the No. 1 goal for all of the starters is to have a quality start, try to go six innings, and try to take the pressure off the bullpen every single night,” Zimmermann said. “I’m feeling really good about being able to go six innings today.”

The Orioles pounced early, scoring three runs in the first off Daniel Lynch (2-2) on a passed ball, an RBI single by Ryan Mountcastle and a sacrifice fly by Ramón Urías.

The Royals pulled to within 3-1 when Hunter Dozier hit a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Whit Merrifield.

Tyler Nevin added an RBI single in the fourth that boosted the Orioles’ lead to 4-1. Dozier cut the margin to 4-2 with a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Keegan Akin pitched two scoreless innings for the Orioles and Dillon Tate closed out the ninth to pick up his first save and fourth of his career.

Orioles outfielder Austin Hays went 5 for 7 over the two games and leads the team with nine multi-hit games.

“When he swings at strikes, he hits the ball,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “Right now, I feel like he’s a little more patient, he’s getting in good counts and he’s taking some walks. He’s not trying to do too much.”

In the opener with the score 4-all, Jorge Lopez (3-2) retired the first two batters in the ninth. Nicky Lopez then reached when second baseman Rougned Odor misplayed a sharp grounder and took third on a wild pickoff throw by the Orioles reliever.

Taylor’s single put the Royals ahead and Salvador Perez provided an insurance run with another RBI single off Cionel Pérez.

Kansas City manager Mike Matheny recorded his 700th career win in the majors with the Royals and St. Louis.

“It’s pretty cool,” Matheny said. “I like it.”

Jordan Lyles allowed three earned runs and seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk over 71/3 innings for the Orioles. It was Lyle’s deepest start since May 15, 2018, and he is the first Orioles pitcher to throw seven innings this season.

Taylor Clarke (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless eighth, and Scott Barlow earned his second save after standing two runners.

Royals starter Zack Greinke allowed two runs on a season-high 10 hits with three strikeouts and no walks over 5/2/3 innings.

“I just tried to make pitches,” Greinke said. “I kept thinking when guys were on base, ‘Don’t make a mistake now.’ Keep making pitches and it won’t be that bad.”

A female fan got a nice Mother’s Day present when she was able to make a one-handed snag on the ground-rule double by Baltimore’s Cedric Mullins. She received a round of high-fives, including one from her daughter.

Royals: RF Edward Olivares had to leave the first game with a right quad strain and did not play in the nightcap.

Orioles: OF Tyler Nevin (right groin) was back in the lineup for the second game.

Royals: Carlos Hernandez (0-1, 6.00 ERA) took the loss in a 3-0 setback to the New York Yankees in his last outing. He allowed three runs (two earned) with four hits, five walks and three strikeouts in four innings.

Orioles: Since allowing four runs in his first start, Orioles starter Tyler Wells (0-1, 4.50 ERA) has not given up any more than two runs in his next four appearances (16.1 innings).

Byron slid into the wall and Logano went on to his first win of the season and first at the track. Byron finished 13th and wasn’t happy with Logano’s late-race tactic, calling him an idiot.

POTOMAC, Md. (AP) — Max Homa played solid, steady golf during a week of cold, wet conditions and a back-and-forth Sunday duel with Keegan Bradley. He closed with a 2-under 68 for a two-shot victory in the Wells Fargo Championship. The 31-year-old Homa finished at 8-under 272 at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. He won for the fourth time overall, third in 15 months and second since he gave up his popular podcast. Bradley started the day with the lead, gave it away and took it back before Homa moved ahead for good on the back nine. He closed with a 72 to finish two shots back, tied with Cameron Young and Matt Fitzpatrick.

Butler runs the table to win Region VI Softball Championship


The Barton Baseball Cougars went into their weekend series with the
Colby Trojans needing two wins to clinch the regular season Jayhawk
West regular season championship. They took care of that with a home
sweep of the Trojans on Friday. Saturday they traveled to Colby to
wrap up the series and split the double header to end the season with
a record of 35-19 and a 24-8 conference mark.

Colby won game one
7-3 before the Cougars bounced back to win game two 6-5.

The Jayhawk West
title was the program’s 10th overall and first since
2018 when Barton reached the Junior College World Series for the
first time in school history.

Now they begin their
quest for another trip to Grand Junction as they begin the Region VI
playoffs at home Wednesday in game one of a best of three series
against Labette with a 1:00 p.m. game at Lawson-Biggs Field. Game two
will also be a 1:00 p.m. with game three if necessary starting at the
same time Friday.

Labette finished 8th
in the Jayhawk East and will come to Great Bend with a record of
16-24.

If the Cougars can
take care of the Cardinals, they would advance to the NJCAA Plains
District Tournament starting May, 17 at Kansas State’s Tointon
Family Stadium.

The 11th Barton Community College women's tennis team got off to a great start on the first day of the NJCAA Division I National Tennis Championships, winning seven of its eight matches Saturday at the Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Arizona.

Sweeping all three doubles matches, the Cougars won five of their six singles matches in receiving one first round bye.

Barton Women's Tennis nearly flawless on opening day of NJCAA Championships

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Wilmer Flores hit a grand slam in the first inning and matched his career high with six RBIs as the San Francisco Giants snapped out of their offensive funk and beat the St. Louis Cardinals 13-7 to end a five-game losing streak. On a day the Giants honored former catcher Buster Posey in a pregame ceremony, Mauricio Dubón and Darin Ruf also homered. Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina reached 1,000 career RBIs. Dylan Carlson added a three-run homer, but St. Louis committed three errors and ended its three-game winning streak.

BALTIMORE (AP) — A second straight game between the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals has been postponed because of rain. The teams also had a game Friday night called off, one of six games around the major leagues that were rained out that night. That was the most in a day because of inclement weather since 2018. This is Kansas City’s only scheduled visit to Baltimore this season. The Royals and Orioles will try to play a straight doubleheader Sunday, then another game Monday afternoon on what was a mutual off day.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — College sports leaders visited Capitol Hill, asking lawmakers to consider rules to govern name, image and likeness money for college athletes. Greg Sankey of the SEC and George Kliavkoff of the Pac-12 were scheduled to meet with lawmakers on both sides of aisle. The NCAA is trying to clarify existing rules to prevent boosters from being involved in recruiting. College sports leaders are skeptical about the NCAA's ability to crack down in so-called collectives founded by wealthy boosters.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Golden State Warriors have rebounded from their Game 2 loss by blowing out the Memphis Grizzlies, 142-112. Golden State actually trailed by seven at halftime before torching Memphis for 78 points the rest of the way, giving the Warriors a 2-1 lead in the NBA's Western Conference semifinals. Steph Curry dropped in 30 points in 35 minutes, while fellow Splash Brother Klay Thompson had 21 points and nine rebounds. Jordan Poole chipped in 27 points off the bench.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee has a 2-1 series lead in the NBA's Eastern Conference semifinals after Giannis Antetokounmpo made the go-ahead basket with 44.3 seconds left before the Bucks hung on for a 103-101 win over the Celtics. Antetokounmpo finished with 42 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists, while Jrue Holiday provided 25 points. The Celtics missed three putbacks in the final 4.6 and had a potential tying bucket waved off because it came after the final horn.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Rich Strike came charging up the rail to overtake the leaders in the closing strides for a stunning 80-1 upset in the Kentucky Derby. Jockey Sonny Leon guided Rich Strike from well back in the 20-horse field to run by 4-1 favorite Epicenter and Zandon at Churchill Downs. Rich Strike wasn’t even in the Derby field until Friday when Ethereal Road was scratched. Rich Strike triggered the second-biggest upset in the race’s 148-year history, paying $163.60 to win.

BALTIMORE -- The Royals will now have three off-days to gear up for the upcoming stretch in the schedule that has them playing 19 games in 17 days this month.

Saturday’s game against the Orioles at Camden Yards was postponed because of steady rains all night, and it will be made up on Monday at 11:05 a.m. CT, which was a mutual off-day for both clubs. Monday’s game will come after a single-admission doubleheader on Sunday (12:35 p.m CT), making up Friday’s postponement.

Royals PPD in Baltimore on Saturday; makeup Monday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have an idea when it comes to their expectations for their first-round draft picks, defensive back Trent McDuffie and defensive end George Karlaftis, at their rookie minicamp this weekend.

The same goes for the rest of their draft class, most of whom they scouted and interviewed on numerous occasions.

But there also are some intriguing rookies who were not selected in last week’s draft that could carve out a roster spot with the defending AFC West champions, beginning with Clemson wide receiver Justyn Ross, a once-budding star whose career was threatened by a congenital spine disorder that ultimately required surgery.

“Like a lot of these guys,” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said, “whether you’re a first-round pick or second-round pick, you’ve got to come in here and learn the playbook. You’ve got to have confidence in the coaching staff to execute your assignments. You have to have the confidence in Pat (Mahomes) for him to trust you to execute your assignment, and if he can do that, I’d say talent-wise, as long as he stays healthy, he’ll have a shot.”

Ross should have had more than a shot; he should have been a first-round pick in his own right.

The tall, lanky wide receiver rose to stardom as a freshman when he helped the Tigers win the national championship, catching 301 yards worth of passes and four TD throws in wins over Notre Dame and Alabama. And he followed up with a sophomore season in which he had 865 yards receiving and eight touchdowns.

Then came the hit from a linebacker two years ago that left Ross feeling tingling in his arms.

He was taken for tests to his spine and neck, which is required by the program for any such injury, and thought nothing more of it. In fact, Ross was feeling good enough a couple days later to return to practice. But the tests revealed something entirely unexpected — a condition called Klippel-Feil syndrome that causes the fusion of spinal bones.

Several surgeons said Ross would never play football again, but he refused to accept their opinions. Eventually, he got in touch with spinal specialist Dr. David Okonkwo at the University of Pittsburgh. It was Okonkwo, who is also the Steelers’ neurosurgeon, who performed a surgery in June 2020 that removed a disc to free up space in the spinal cord.

Even after the procedure, Ross wasn’t sure football was still in the cards. He had to wait for the bones to heal, sitting out the entire 2021 season. It took almost a year after the surgery before he was cleared to play.

Ross wound up catching 46 passes for 514 yards and three touchdowns last season.

Those are numbers that would usually get a player drafted. But along with his spinal condition, Ross dealt with a foot injury last season, then tested poorly at the Clemson pro day, causing many teams to take him off their board entirely.

Veach has a good working relationship with Ross’ agent, Tory Dandy, who also represents former Chiefs wide receiver Sammy Watkins. The two stayed in touch as the draft went on, and when nobody selected Ross, the Chiefs offered him a free-agent deal that was too good to pass up: Not only would he get to catch passes from Mahomes in a pass-happy offense, Ross has a good shot to make the team given the status of the wide receiver corps.

The Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill before the draft, and they lost Byron Pringle and Demarcus Robinson in free agency. And while they drafted Skyy Moore in the second round and signed veterans JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in free agency, there remains an opportunity for Ross to earn a spot on the roster as a rookie.

“I know our docs at (The University of Kansas Health System) spent a lot of time talking to the experts that dealt with Justyn, and he’s cleared,” Veach said. “I think really when you take away the neck situation, and again, our docs did a great job of exhausting all of the information, I think for me it’s a little easier on how I operate.”

There are plenty of undrafted free agents in a similar situation as Ross this weekend, trying to earn a coveted spot on a team that has hosted four consecutive AFC championship games. But few offer the proven ability at a position of need for a team that continues to have Super Bowl aspirations heading into next season.

“It’s really a combination of talent, being smart, staying on top of the training – and that means when you’re away from the facility, too,” Veach said. “Like a lot of these young guys, if he does those things, given the talent that he has, he should be able to come here and potentially contribute.”

Clemson’s Justyn Ross aims to earn roster spot with Chiefs

The Barton Community College softball team rallied from a three run deficit with a nine run fifth inning before holding on for a 11-9 opening round victory over Garden City Community College in the Region VI Tournament held at Dodge City's Legend Park.

Now 25-20 on the season, the fourth seeded Cougars advance to Saturday's 12:00 p.m. semifinal against top seed and 6th ranked Butler Community College. Fifth seeded Garden City slides to 22-31 in dropping to the Saturday 10:00 a.m. elimination game against eight seed Northwest Kansas Technical College. The victor of the Barton-Butler game will play at 4:00 p.m. winner's bracket finals while the loser slips to the 2:00 p.m. elimination game against the victor of third seeded Colby and seventh seeded Dodge City.

The Cougars utilized all five pitchers with Jessica Morgan's 4.2 innings getting the win improving to 12-7 but the big story in the circle was Elizabeth Horsch closing out the game. Inheriting a runner at second base following the Broncbusters rolling with momentum having scored four runs on no outs, Horsch got the final three outs getting help from the Cougar defense including Halie Stoneking's snaring the final out at the left field fence to earn her first collegiate save.

Garden City put three runs on the board in the opening frame to chase starter Kayla Beers from the game as Morgan came in inducing a fielder's choice and strikeout to escape further damage.

Stoneking led off the home half with her 8th home run of the season as the Cougars would load and strand the bases full after Kayden Smith and Jaysa Anderson singles followed by Teegan Krol's two out walk.

The Broncbusters got the run back in the third, a leadoff double scoring after a sacrifice bunt and RBI single. Looking to add more to their lead in the fifth by loading the bases with no outs, Morgan and the Cougar defense executed three consecutive fielder's choices to get out of the jam.

Trailing by three in the home half of the fifth, the Cougars erupted as all nine players scored a run in the frame to seize a 10-4 lead.

Stoneking began the fun with a leadoff walk before enjoying a trot around the bags on Smith's 5th big fly of the season. Anderson made her return from a two-game hiatus due to injury picking up two hits in the frame, one of those a double to join Sydni Williams' walk in scoring on Krol's double. Adreanna Lance followed with an RBI double and after Ireland Cotton's reach on error, Lexi Dryden concluded Barton's six runs with no outs driving in a run on a single. Smith drove in the eighth run of the frame on a RBI double with Williams' sac fly closing out the big inning producing inning.

The teams traded runs in the sixth, the Broncbusters' leadoff double scoring on a one-out double with the Cougars answering in the home half as Krol's single and Lance's walk began the frame with Dryden delivering an RBI double.

Garden City made things interesting down six to the final seventh inning, beginning with an Allana Neilsen solo home run to begin the at-bat. Julia Carey, who took over in the circle in the sixth, had trouble slowing down the Broncbusters as a walk, single, and consecutive doubles produced four runs to chase her from the contest with Horsch taking over. Inheriting the runner at second with no outs, Horsch induced a fly out and ground out before Stoneking's catch at the fence sealed the game.

The Barton Community College baseball team had plenty to celebrate Friday afternoon in the final home regular season games at Lawson-Biggs Field as the Cougars took care of home turf earning a 6-5 and 18-10 doubleheader sweep over Colby Community College clinching the program's 10th Jayhawk West crown.

Exploding for four doubles and four runs in the third inning, Barton withstood a late Trojan charge as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bartonsports.com/sports/bsb/2021-22/bios/redeker_logan_ecmg">Logan Redeker</a>&nbsp;secured his first collegiate save stranding the tying run at second locking down a 6-5 win in the opener. In the nightcap, the Cougars overcame a pair of six run deficits with back-to-back six run frames cruising to the 18-10 twin bill sweep.

Securing its' first title since the 2018 season, the Cougars sit at 23-7 in the KJCCC and 38-15 overall while Colby slips to 20-10 in the Jayhaw West and 34-18 on the season. The teams will conclude the 2022 regular season Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader from Colby's Memorial Field.

The teams will conclude the 2022 regular season Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader from Colby's Memorial Field.<a href="https://www.bartonsports.com/sports/bsb/2021-22/bios/rodgers_alex_ddl0">Alex Rodgers</a>&nbsp;led the offense out of the leadoff spot slashing .875 on the afternoon going 7-for-8 from the dish driving in five runs, scoring seven times and swiping five bags extending his program single season runs (105) and steals (54) records.<a href="https://www.bartonsports.com/sports/bsb/2021-22/bios/sanchez_ricardo_5e5l">Ricardo Sanchez</a>&nbsp;drove in a team high six runs becoming the school's new single season RBIs record holder with 84 while the freshman concluded the day 3-for-8 lacing a triple and pair of doubles extending his program's two-bag single season record to 34.<a href="https://www.bartonsports.com/sports/bsb/2021-22/bios/nieves_joel_gpgu">Joel Nieves</a>&nbsp;pieced together a second team best average of .833 concluding the day 5-for-6 out of the nine spot driving in one and crossing the plate four times.

BALTIMORE -- It’ll be double the fun on Mother’s Day.

Rain washed away the Orioles’ series opener against the Royals at Camden Yards on Friday, and the game will be made up on Sunday as a traditional (single-admission) doubleheader starting at 12:35 p.m. CT. 

The start time for Game 2 on Sunday will be dependent on the finish of Game 1.

For the Orioles, the washed-away game on Friday will push back their pitching plans; Jordan Lyles will now start Saturday’s game and a combination of Tyler Wells and Bruce Zimmermann will start on Sunday, order to be determined.

Carlos Hernández will start for the Royals on Saturday, with Daniel Lynch and Zack Greinke going on Sunday.

It's a 5:30 p.m. broadcast Saturday night on KVGB.

Royals-O's rained out Friday; twin bill Sunday

The Barton Community College Athletic Department celebrated Wednesday night the 2021-22 seasons with its end-of-the-year celebration. Held annually in conjunction with its partnership with the Cougar Booster Club, the Department recognized and celebrated the accomplishments of its teams and individual student-athletes.

Following a brief welcome, Master of Ceremony and Athletic Director Trevor Rolfs introduced special guest Iris Jenkins. A long-time employee of Great Wester Dining, the College's food service provider, Jenkins was greeted to the stage by a rousing standing ovation by the over 300 in attendance in response to her friendship and "mom" relationship to the students. Jenkins retires from GWD next week to begin a new chapter in Oklahoma closer to family.

On behalf of the Cougar Booster Club, Rolfs presented the current vice president of the club Janice Link with the Booster of the Year award in recognition of her active involvement and support of the Club's mission and to the athletic department throughout the year.

Nominated and voted upon by coaches and staff, the athletic department also recognized its individual achievements by student-athletes. Earning the student-athlete of the year awards were volleyball's Mylena Testoni recognized for her second consecutive first team All-American selection and program record book impact, and baseball's Alex Rodgers as the program's stolen base record holder continues his assault in other all-time best categories.

Inspirational athletes nominated and voted upon in respect for their stories-behind-the-story rising to accomplish collegiate achievements were awarded to volleyball's Tasiah Nunnery and men's swimming's Josias Solarte.

Rolfs also made the announcement and recognition of a pair of student-athletes being selected as Barton Outstanding Graduates, Jaycee Patton of the softball team and Tom Gehring of the men's golf team. Both will participate and have roles at the College's 52nd Annual Commencement held at 7:00 p.m., May 13, at the Barton Gymnasium.

Also honored throughout the event were the many "behind the scenes" personnel of staff, faculty, facilities, team managers, and the athletic training staff aiding in the care of student-athletes. Recognized from the Athletic Training department, Brogan Buckhalter earned top honors as Most Outstanding Student Athletic Trainer for his work and leadership within the baseball program. Additional honors distributed were: Shelby Sibley, top sophomore student; Emma Sanders, top freshman student; Anthony Twiggs, most improved sophomore; and Alicia Enriquez, most improved freshman.
