LAWRENCE, Kan. – Big 12 television partners ESPN and FOX announced their early season selections on Thursday, locking in the first three games of the season for Kansas Football.

The Jayhawks will open the season on Sept. 2 against Tennessee Tech at 7 p.m., CT on Big 12 Now. Kansas will hit the road the following week to open Big 12 play against West Virginia with that game set to start at 6 p.m., ET/5 CT on Big 12 Now.

The time and television plans for the Houston matchup on Sept. 17 is also finalized, with that matchup scheduled for 3 p.m., CT on ESPNU.

The 2022 schedule was previously announced for Kansas, but the times and television plans had yet to be announced. Times and television information for the remaining nine games will be announced on a week-by-week basis during the season.

In addition, this season will mark the debut of the new Touchdown Club, which features multiple premium seating options.

Times and Television Information Announced for First 3 Games of Season

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Cole Johnson scored on a squeeze bunt by Josh Nicoloff in the 11th inning and seventh-seeded Kansas State stayed alive in the Big 12 Tournament with a 6-5 victory over second-seeded Texas Tech on Friday night.

Johnson opened the inning by reaching second base when Easton Murrell dropped his fly ball in the corner, just fair, as he approached the wall. A sacrifice bunt by Kaelen Culpepper put Johnson on third, with the perfectly executed bunt coming on a 1-0 pitch.

First baseman Dylan Phillips came on to pitch a perfect ninth with two strikeouts for his eighth save.

Kansas State had tied the game in the top of the ninth on a two-out, bases-loaded wild pitch. The Wildcats were 0 for 24 when trailing after eight innings.

The Red Raiders (37-20) beat K-State (29-28) 5-3 to open the tournament before losing to Oklahoma. The Wildcats now face the third-seeded Sooners on Saturday, needing two wins to make the championship game.

K-State jumped on top with three runs in the second inning with Nick Goodwin hitting a solo home run and Justin Mitchell a two-run single.

A three-run sixth put Texas Tech on top with Ty Coleman’s two-run double the big hit.

After the Wildcats tied the game in the seventh, Dillon Carter followed Parker Kelly’s double to make it 5-4 for Texas Tech.

K-State eliminates Texas Tech 6-5 in 11 with squeeze bunt

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jorge Polanco homered in a four-run first inning and Carlos Correa hit a go-ahead homer in the fourth to power the Minnesota Twins to a 10-7 win over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

Minnesota had a season-high 15 hits. Polanco’s first inning two-run homer was his fifth of the season and it came in his first at-bat after missing three games with an ankle injury. Correa’s solo home run was his third of the season and broke a 4-4 tie in the fourth inning to give the Twins a lead they never relinquished.

Every batter from both teams reached base at least once.

“We’re going to hit some balls out of the ballpark, we know that,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “But if you can’t have those types of at-bats like we had today, getting some baserunners, forcing the action a little, making the other team uncomfortable ... you’re going to end up real hit or miss. You’re going to end up winning a few games with some big swings and you’re going to end up coming up short most of the time.”

Bobby Witt Jr. finished a double shy of the cycle for the Royals, who have lost seven of eight. He singled in the first, hit a two-run triple in the third and added a solo homer in the seventh for his sixth of the season. In his bid to complete the cycle, he flew out to right field in the eighth inning with two runners on base.

“Special, to have that kind of day,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said of Witt. “He showed a little bit of everything with the opposite field power, with obviously the way that he runs, almost saw one of the best defensive plays of the year. ... He really had a good night.”

Minnesota starter Bailey Ober pitched three innings, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five. The Twins used seven relievers to close out the final six innings. Trevor Megill (1-1) was credited with the win, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Emilio Pagán got the final out for his seventh save.

Kansas City starter Brad Keller (1-5) gave up six runs and 11 hits in four innings. MJ Melendez also homered for the Royals, who fought back down four runs after the first inning.

Witt’s triple scored a pair of runs and Hunter Dozier added an RBI single in the third inning. Nicky Lopez singled home a run to tie it in the fourth. Lopez finished 3 for 3 with a walk.

The game didn’t remain tied for long. Correa’s home run and a sacrifice fly from Trevor Larnach in the bottom of the fourth gave the Twins a two-run lead that was cut to one with Witt’s home run.

The Twins added four runs in the eighth inning on Gio Urshela’s second RBI single of the night, Nick Gordon’s two-run double and Luis Arraez’s RBI single. Gordon finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

Melendez’s solo home run and Emmanuel Rivera’s RBI double cut the Royals’ deficit to three in the ninth. But Pagán came in and struck out Lopez to end the game.

“I was happy with the way we fought in that game,” Baldelli said. “It was a game we could have lost. I know we ended up winning by a little bit, and put 10 on the board, or whatever it was. But that’s a game that could have easily gone in the wrong direction and there was a toughness level from our guys that was good tonight.”

“He’s probably one of the better players I’ve ever seen, just how explosive he is. And he’s a great kid, too, on top of that. You hate to see those guys that are uber athletes and they’re not good people. He’s as good as it comes and it’s easy to root for people like that.” — Lopez on Witt.

The Twins placed OF Gilberto Celestino on the COVID-19 Injured List on Friday. He is experiencing “mild symptoms,” Baldelli said.

Celestino has played in 31 games for the Twins this season, hitting .324 (24-for-74) with four doubles, four RBIs, 10 runs scored, seven walks and a .398 on-base percentage.

Royals: Matheny said C Salvador Perez is now “day-to-day” with a left thumb strain after his stint on the 10-day IL ended Friday. Perez joined the Royals in Minneapolis on Thursday and has participated in both batting and catching drills. Perez injured the thumb while batting on May 17 against the Chicago White Sox.

Twins: LHP Danny Coulombe returned from his rehab assignment and was reinstated from the 15-day IL on Friday. He took Celestino’s spot on the 26-man roster. Coulombe missed the Twins’ last 15 games with left hip impingement, and appeared in two games on rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul.

Coulombe faced five batters in relief Friday and allowed one run on two hits and two walks. He retired one batter.

Royals: RHP Brady Singer (1-0, 1.83) will start against the Twins on Saturday. Singer has not allowed a run in either of his two starts this season, the latest coming against Minnesota last Sunday.

Twins: Minnesota will counter with RHP Chris Archer (0-1, 3.86). Archer pitched four innings in his last start, allowing one run on three hits to the Detroit Tigers.

2-1A State Baseball Tournament Scores and Schedule

The Barton Community College track and field program picked up a pair of post-season regional awards and All-America honors distributed by the U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following the conclusion of the outdoor season.

Headlining the post-season honors were Central Region Female Field Athlete of the Year Nia Robinson, along with Emmanuel Dixon voted the Central Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year.

Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches prior to the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track &amp; Field Championships this past weekend. Only those individuals from USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for awards.

Robinson went into the national meet having posted the top marks in both the long jump (6.40m, 21-00.00) and triple jump (12.87m, 42-02.75), as well as, was second ranked in the high jump. The sophomore from Lucea, Jamaica, won all three events at the 2022 Region VI Championships as her 30 points earned the High Point Athlete of the Meet award.

Already owning the program long jump record of 6.56m (21-06.25) set last season, Robinson recently marked the program's 5th best triple jump (12.87m, 42-02.75) and 3rd best high jump (1.80m, 5-10.75) at the Region VI Championships.

Although this year's national meet didn't turn out as expected, Robinson still brought home a third place medal in the long jump and a national runner-up silver in the high jump.

The 2022 outdoor award chalks up stellar career of USTFCCC outdoor Awards as the University of South Florida signee earned two National Athlete of the Week in becoming one of five Barton women and the second two-time winner in women's program history.

In his first season as assistant coach, Dixon primarily instructed the sprint and hurdles, six of his Cougars in the top-3 spots of the Central Region in individual events, plus two top-2 relay spots. Two of his athletes, Ashantae Harvey and Lashanna Graham, lead the 400m and 400m hurdles, respectively, and were members on the nation's leading 4×400m squad as well. Dixon was earlier named the Men's Assistant Coach of the Region VI Outdoor Championships and joins fellow assistant coach James Isaac's indoor honor giving the Cougars a sweep of the region women's coaching staff distinction from the track and field season.

In other coaching awards given out by USTFCCCA, Barton's wide stretch of former athletes and coaches dotted the end of the season honors. Headlining the list was former Cougar standout Tabarie Henry, now at New Mexico Junior College, being named the National Women's Assistant Coach of the Year to add to his West Region Assistant Coach of the Year award. Former Barton coach Keith Blackwill, now into his 16th year leading the New Mexico JC program, was named the West Region's Women's Head Coach of the Year. Former Barton thrower Glenwood Edwards Jr. was named the Central Region's Men's Assistant Coach of the Year in his 5th season at Region VI member Cowley College while former track standout Shellene Williams-Davis earned the Midwest Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year in her 10th season as Associate Head Coach at Iowa Western Community College.

Barton's men placed 3rd at the National Championships, finishing among the top three for the fifth straight year at the national meet as the women were two points shy of hardware in a 4th place showing marking the fifth straight season of placing in the top five.

The Cougars compiled a meet third best 41 All-America awards by virtue of finishing among the top-8 in an event, including as a member of a relay team, at the 2022 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Outdoor Track &amp; Field Championships.

The Barton women accumulated 90 points at Nationals twenty-four All-America performances between twelve Cougars led by the trio of awards earned by Lashanna Graham and Ashantae Harvey and Kelsie Murrell-Ross' national title.

Barton's Robinson and Dixon earn Regional track and field honors

ARLINGTON, Texas – Blake Adams struck out nine, Dominic Johnson homered and K-State ousted West Virginia 8-5 in an elimination game Thursday afternoon at the 2022 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship at Globe Life Field.

K-State (28-28) scored in six different innings, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. Dylan Phillips registered three hits in a 3-for-5 day with two runs batted in to lead eight different Wildcats with a base hit.

"Life in the losing bracket is a tough, tough life to live," said head coach Pete Hughes. "We hadn't been playing well but our kids are resilient, and I thought they came out with a lot of energy against a team that has been playing well. It's important for us to jump out and get the lead early and we haven't done that in a while. It begins and ends with a solid start and good starting pitching which we got from Blake today."  

Adams pitched into the seventh inning, as he retired nine straight and 12 of 13 batters at one point. Adams struck out five over the first two innings and finished the day with four earned runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings.

"They got to me early last week and I had to change a few things and really focus on getting the ball down which was a big key today," Adams said. "I left a few pitches up and this is a team that makes you pay for it, and they made me pay for it last week. I was building off last week's learning experience to come in with some momentum. I started making pitches in the third inning and getting ahead of batters which was key."

Adams took the mound with a two-run lead, as Johnson kickstarted his offense with a single to begin the game. Nick Goodwin drove him in with a one-out double and Phillips tallied his first RBI single a batter later.

In relief of Adams, Ty Ruhl and Phillips held the Mountaineers (33-22) without a hit over the day's final 2 1/3 innings. Phillips moved from first base to the mound in the ninth, inheriting two baserunners, and retired all three he faced for his team-high seventh save.

West Virginia erased the Wildcats' three-run lead with three runs in the third inning, as four consecutive Mountaineers reached base with two outs. McGwire Holbrook, Braden Barry and Dayne Leonard rattled off consecutive run-scoring singles off Adams to even the score.

The game remained tied until Justin Mitchell delivered a go-ahead, two-out single in the fifth. Phillips, who began the frame with a single, came around to score on Mitchell's first of two hits.

The Cats expanded their lead an inning later, as Johnson led off the sixth with his 12th home run of the season. Cash Rugely followed with a single and later scampered home on a two-out single from Phillips.

In the seventh, Rugely drew his second bases-loaded walk of the game, staking K-State with a 7-3 advantage.

After WVU got one run back in the bottom of the seventh, Josh Nicoloff started the ninth with a double. Nicoloff moved to third on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Mitchell and a batter later, raced home on a squeeze play executed by Raphael Pelletier.

"We just played West Virginia last weekend and our guys know how explosive that offense can be," Hughes added. "They can put a five spot up on you in a heartbeat. You saw in the third inning today that they were going first to third on us for 20 minutes. I think it was fresh in our guys' heads, you can't build a big enough lead against West Virginia, a national tournament team."

K-State laid down a season-high four sacrifice bunts in the game.

The Wildcats stranded 11 baserunners in the game, including eight from the second though the fourth innings. K-State left the bases loaded in the second, finishing 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

The win snapped a five-game losing skid and was K-State's first against WVU this season. The Wildcats advance to Friday action at the Big 12 Championship for the second straight season.

Adams, K-State Knock Out West Virginia 8-5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Whit Merrifield drove in two runs with a double and scored on Bobby Witt Jr.’s double, as the Kansas City Royals rallied for three runs in the eighth inning and beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2 Thursday night.

Josh Staumont (2-1) worked a scoreless inning and picked up the win. Scott Barlow escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and stranded two on base in the ninth to earn his fifth save as the Royals snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Devin Smeltzer pitched seven scoreless innings for the Twins before Tyler Duffey (2-3) let the lead slip away in the eighth. Emmanuel Rivera singled with one out and moved to second on Ryan O’Hearn’s two-out, pinch-hit single. Merrifield then lined a double into the gap in right-center to tie the score at 2. After Andrew Benintendi walked, Witt doubled to left-center, scoring Merrifield with the go-ahead run.

“You hope to have that big hit — that’s the thing that’s eluded us more than anything else. But (Merrifield) comes through there,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “Then Bobby ... just shortens up, doesn’t try to do too much, just uses the middle of the field and the next thing you know, we’ve got an opportunity to walk away with a win.”

The Twins tried to rally in their half of the eighth, loading the bases on singles by Gary Sánchez, Gio Urshela and Luis Arraez with no outs. But Barlow came on to strike out the next two batters and retired Max Kepler on a soft grounder to first base, leaving the bases loaded.

Minnesota put runners on the corners with two outs in the ninth as well, but Witt made a nice play on Urshela’s hard-hit grounder for the final out.

Barlow threw a season-high 41 pitches to earn the six-out save. He got plenty help from his catcher, rookie MJ Melendez, who blocked four pitches in the dirt in the eighth inning, all with the tying run on third base.

“To be able to get through that, Scotty’s got to make great pitches, but he’s also got to have a lot of faith in MJ,” Matheny said. “And MJ did a phenomenal job keeping the ball in front and giving Scott confidence because he has to be able to do that.”

Smeltzer handcuffed the Royals all night, relying mostly on a mix of fastballs and changeups. He allowed two hits and walked one while striking out six. He was starting in place of Joe Ryan, who was added to the COVID-19 IL on Wednesday. In his most recent appearance, Smeltzer held the Royals to one run over 5 1/3 innings in a 6-4 Twins victory on May 20.

“I don’t know if you can go out there and pitch much better than he did,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He did a very, very nice job in every way. The opposition looked uncomfortable in a lot of at-bats. He kept them off-balance nicely and missed a few bats as well. Everything we could ask for from him.”

Meanwhile, Royals starter Daniel Lynch also kept the Twins in check, giving up two earned runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.

The Twins got on the board in the second inning on Ryan Jeffers’ RBI single. They added their second run in the fourth when Jose Miranda doubled and came around on a two-out single by Gilberto Celestino.

Kansas City’s Brewer Hicklin made his major league debut on Thursday, batting ninth and playing center field. He was hitting .266 with five home runs and 24 RBIs in 42 games at Triple-A Omaha this year.

Hicklin struck out looking in his first two at-bats against Smeltzer and was replaced by a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.

Friday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State director of athletics Curtis Hammeke has announced the hiring of Justin Wichert as the 16th head baseball coach at FHSU.

"I am both grateful and excited for the opportunity to lead the Tiger baseball program," said Wichert. "I want to thank Curtis Hammeke and everyone involved in allowing me to become part of the FHSU Athletics family.

"We will work relentlessly to build the program and its culture, both on and off the field. Our team will show up everyday with energy, passion, dedication, determination and pride."

Wichert comes to Hays after a four-season stint as head coach at Trinidad State College in Trinidad, Colo. The Stillwater, Okla. native led the Trojans to a record of 112-83 from 2019 until 2022, including two trips to the postseason. His squad reached the Region IX title game this last season and hosted the 2019 regional tournament before playing in the district tournament that year. The Trojans won the Empire Conference Championship in Wichert's first year at the helm.

"We believe Coach Wichert's character traits, work ethic and coaching background align well with the type of leadership needed for our baseball program," said Hammeke. "His passion for coaching and developing young men on and off the field will be felt by all associated with the program."

The Trojans posted a 44-17 record this past season while ranking third in NJCAA Division I with a team batting average of .388. His players earned nine All-Region IX honors in 2022, including Pitcher of the Year Isaac Gallegos and Freshman of the Year Benji Suave.

Wichert's squad earned recognition as an NJCAA Academic Team of the Year in 2020 and 2021 while 19 individuals earned NJCAA All-Academic Honors (three 1st team, 10 2nd team, six 3rd team).

Before starting his head coaching career at TSC, Wichert served four years as assistant coach at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith (2015-18). The Lions won a DII-era-record 35 games in 2017 before finishing runner-up in the NCAA DII South Central Regional that same season.

No stranger to the MIAA, Wichert previously coached at Pittsburg State University in 2013. As pitching coach, he helped the Gorilla staff post its best ERA in 15 years that season. Before that he served three seasons as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Northeastern Oklahoma A&amp;M (2010-12). Wichert helped the Golden Norsemen to a pair of conference championships (2010 Bi-State Champions, 2012 OCAC Champions) and a Region II runner-up finish in 2011 while coaching All-American pitcher Keaton Hernandez.

During the summers, Wichert coached with the Laramie Colts of the Mountain Collegiate Baseball League (2009), Weyburn Beavers of the Western Major Baseball League (2010) and with the Myrtle Beach Shore Eagles (2012).

Several of Wichert's former players were either drafted or signed with big league organizations, including MLB All-Star Blake Treinen and current minor leaguers Jake Jewell and Logan Allen.

A right-handed pitcher in his playing days, Wichert played two seasons at Cowley Community College in 2002-03 before he was drafted in the 44th round of the 2003 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres. He then went on to pitch at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. from 2004-06, earning second team all-conference accolades in 2004 while helping the Cardinals to a program-record 47 wins that year.

He then played two seasons at the professional level after graduating, spending the 2006 season with the Kansas City (Kan.) T-Bones and the 2007 season with the Port Charlotte (Fla.) Redfish. While playing professional baseball he played under many great managers including Cecil Fielder, Jackie Hernandez and Al Gallagher.

Wichert earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from William Jewell in 2006 before completing a master's degree in Health, Human Performance and Recreation from Pittsburg State in 2012. He and his wife, Susie, have three children.

Justin Wichert Selected as Next Fort Hays State Baseball Coach

Four members from the Barton Community College softball team earned Division I All-KJCCC and All-Region VI post-season honors.

Teegan Krol and Jaysa Anderson headlined the selections with first team honors, Sydni Williams landing on the second team, and Kayden Smith garnering honorable mention distinction.

Teegan Krol – First Team, First Base

Krol not only led the team in home runs but also the KJCCC and Region VI with 13 home runs, finishing with 14 on the season tying for the sixth most single season fence clearers in program history. Batting .358, Krol drove in a team high 52 runs behind a .752 slugging percentage and a squad second best 12 doubles.

The lone sophomore receiving post-season awards, the native of Hutchinson, Kansas, completed her Barton career with 22 home runs to rank fourth most in program history, 90 runs batted in for 5th most, and landing in the top ten drawing 36 walks in her two years.

Defensively Krol was equally solid at the first base bag with a .980 fielding percentage in committing just four errors in 198 total chances.

Jaysa Anderson – First Team, Outfielder

Battling with Krol for the team lead in multiple categories early in the season, the freshman rose to the top of Barton's stats as a mainstay in the No. 4 spot of the Cougar lineup. Batting .407 overall, the Andale, Kansas, native was an even better .416 in conference play.

Despite missing three games due to injury late in the season, Anderson finished second on the squad with 55 hits, a .467 on-base percentage, and six stolen bases. Anderson also finished third on the team with 35 runs batted in and drawing 15 walks while defensively holding down right field on a .864 fielding percentage with just six errors.

Sydni Williams – Second Team, Designated Player

Williams gave the Cougars value by fielding various positions and pitching to earn second team accolades. Third on the team with a .377 batting average, Williams also improved throughout her freshman campaign including in conference play to lead Barton with a league 8th best .442 average. The Wichita, Kansas, native also led the team's main lineup players with 25 walks helping compile a .467 on-base percentage, driving in a squad second best 48 runs on 9 home runs with a third most hits (52) and runs scored (41).

In the lineup mostly as the designated player, Williams also spent time in the field at the hot corners and in the center circle making 17 appearances, recording a 2-2 record with a save in striking out 29 batters in 33.1 innings while walking just five.

Kayden Smith – Honorable Mention, 3rd Base

The third Barton freshman to receive accolades, Smith quickly moved up in the lineup into the leadoff position for most of the season. The native of Topeka, Kansas, batted .366 with a .418 on-base percentage on a team leading 59 hits with 11 doubles, a pair of triples, and 5 home runs.

Barton tied for the third spot of the conference standings at 18-14, concluding the 2022 campaign at 25-22 overall.

Barton Softball earns four post-season honors

After two years of pandemic-related shutdowns and delays, all spring sports state championships are back on schedule across the country, including some storied track and field meets.

More than two million students are involved in the traditional spring sports of track and field, baseball, softball and lacrosse, along with other sports and performing arts programs – the first opportunities for full-scale participation in some states since 2019.  

Outdoor track and field is the top combined participatory sport at the high school level, with 605,354 boys and 488,267 girls involved in the sport rich in state championship history. Several state associations are into their second century of state meets in track and field, and competition – and attendance – is off to a great start.

In Iowa, where its first state high school track meet was held in 1906, a record three-day attendance of 39,415 was set last weekend in Des Moines as the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union staged another successful event.

In a state that has produced many record track performances since conducting its first boys state meet in 1911, the Texas University Interscholastic League completed another outstanding event May 12-14. Flower Mound High School took home top honors as the Class 6A girls champion, led by distance runner Natalie Cook who won both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

Four states with even longer track and field histories are set to begin state meets in the coming days. This weekend, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) will stage its 102nd State Track Meet after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

In a meet that annually draws more than 20,000 spectators to Buchanan High School in Clovis, the CIF State Track Meet has produced a Who’s Who of competitors over the years, including Allyson Felix, Florence Griffith-Joyner, Misty May-Treanor, Bobby Bonds, Lynn Swann, Reggie Bush and many others.

In a meet that began in 1908, the Ohio High School Athletic Association will hold its 114th Boys State Track Meet, as well as its 47th Girls State Meet June 3-4 at Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus.

However, the true granddaddies of high school track and field are Wisconsin and Illinois. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, after being shutout in 2020 and delayed to nearly July last year, will hold its 126th State Track Meet June 3-4 in La Crosse.

 In Illinois, where the first state track meet was contested in 1893, the Illinois High School Association will conduct its three-day event later this week at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Beyond opportunities for participation in state meets, the spring sports of baseball and softball have provided one individual and one team a chance to overcome adversity and challenges.

Easton Arendt has not let his disability of only two fingers on his left hand keep him from succeeding in high school baseball. The sophomore pitcher at De Pere High School in Wisconsin recently led De Pere to a 4-0 shutout victory with 12 strikeouts. In an article on the WFRV-TV (Green Bay) website, Arendt had the following comments:

”Early on, I would think to myself having this disability, I wouldn’t be able to do the things other people can. Then I got the mindset of working twice as hard as everybody else on the field or in any sport that I’m playing. Early on in my grade school days, there were times that I didn’t fit in with the other guys or classmates that I had, but that made me want to work even harder and prove to them that I can do the things that I can do. I used to view it as a disability, but now that I’m at this level, I use it as just a hand. I want to make kids that may have the same effect or something a little bit different to know that they can succeed.”

More than 360,000 girls are involved in fast-pitch softball across the country, but no team has won fewer games and yet learned more life lessons than Pasadena (California) Marshall High School.

In an article by Bill Plaschke in the Los Angeles Times, this incredible team, which recently completed an 0-18 season and has won only one non-forfeited game in three years, has truly demonstrated that high school sports is indeed much more than the final score. It is much more than winning games and championships. No, high school sports is about “improving each day,” about “showing up every day,” about “forming bonds, creating friendships, growing together,” about “laughing together, sweating together, playing hard together,” as some of the players shared.      

We salute high school coaches and athletic directors across the country who have been instrumental in making sure student-athletes are involved in spring sports and performing arts.

&nbsp; ARLINGTON, Texas – No. 2 seed Texas Tech (37-18) defeated No. 7 seed Kansas State (27-28), 5-3, in the third game of the 2022 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at Globe Life Field. The Red Raiders have won three consecutive opening-round games at the Championship. &nbsp; Kurt Wilson scored on a pitching error during the bottom of the second inning to put Texas Tech on the board first. Parker Kelly singled to left field, bringing in Hudson White. After a Kansas State error on second, Kelly stole third and rounded the corner for home to give the Red Raiders an early 3-0 lead over the Wildcats. After three innings with no runs from both teams, Dillon Carter tripled to left-center to break the streak, notching two RBIs and increasing the Red Raider lead to 5-0 to conclude the sixth. Kansas State started its own scoring momentum when Cole Johnson singled to left center, bringing in Dylan Phillips to put the Wildcats on the board in the seventh. Kaelen Culpepper doubled to right field allowing two more Wildcats to cross the plate, cutting the Texas Tech lead to 5-3 at the end of the seventh. Connor McCullough (L, 3-4) pitched six innings giving up five runs (three earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts for the Wildcats. He was relieved by Blake Corsentino who pitched two innings, gave up no hits or runs and threw five strikeouts. Mason Molina (W, 2-5) pitched 6.2 innings giving up three hits, three runs and tossed 10 strikeouts for the Red Raiders. The freshman set career highs in innings pitched and strikeouts thrown before being relieved by Andrew Devine.
