NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee quarterback Ryan Tannehill practiced in a limited fashion Friday, and coach Mike Vrabel said the veteran likely will be a game-time decision Sunday night when the Titans visit the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Titans (5-2) listed Tannehill as questionable and still have a walk-through Saturday before flying to Kansas City. Tannehill was questionable a week ago before being ruled out ahead of Tennessee's flight to Houston where rookie Malik Willis got his first NFL start.

Tennessee has an extra seven hours with the Sunday night kickoff against the Chiefs (5-2), which could be an advantage.

Tannehill sprained his right ankle in a win Oct. 23 over Indianapolis and left the stadium that day in a walking boot. He missed last week’s 17-10 win in Houston, snapping the 11-year veteran's 49-game start streak for Tennessee.

The veteran said Wednesday his mobility while dealing with the pain would be the deciding factor.

With Tannehill staying in Nashville, Willis threw only 10 passes for 55 yards in his NFL debut while being sacked three times. The Titans won by handing off 32 times to two-time NFL rushing champ Derrick Henry, the most carries by a running back in a game this season.

The Titans will be without starting safety Amani Hooker (left shoulder) and fullback Tory Carter (neck).

Jeffery Simmons, a 2021 Pro Bowl defensive tackle, is questionable with a sprained left ankle after not practicing all week. Outside linebacker Bud Dupree is questionable after being added to the injury report with an illness. Defensive lineman Kevin Strong (ankle) also is questionable.

No. 13 K-State ready to face Texas as Big 12 race heats up

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes rarely says the wrong thing when he stands at the podium. He is poised and polished, in victory or defeat, and has carried himself in that professional manner since he joined the Kansas City Chiefs.

So it speaks volumes of the lasting impression that&nbsp;the Titans' 27-3 rout&nbsp;of the Chiefs last season had on him when the Pro Bowl quarterback was asked about it this week: “We weren't ready,” Mahomes replied, “and they beat our (butt).”

Only he used a three-letter word for derrière rather than a four-letter one.

That's about as close as you'll get to Mahomes cursing in public.

“They have that mentality that they're going to come in and win,” Mahomes continued, by way of an explanation, “and a lot of times in this league, when you don't have the confidence coming in, you're going to lose. But when you have a team that is as confident as you, it's going to be a battle.”

The Titans (5-2) have every reason to be confident as they visit Kansas City (5-2) for a Sunday night showdown between divisional leaders. They've won five of the past six in the series, including a wild-card playoff game, though the one defeat happened to come in the AFC championship game and sent the Chiefs to the Super Bowl.

In any case, the Titans also roll into Arrowhead Stadium&nbsp;having won five straight&nbsp;after an 0-2 start.

“It's tough. It's a fun place to play. It’s an atmosphere that you dream about when you’re a kid, going into a rowdy road environment. That is exactly it,” said Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who hopes to return after missing last week's win over Houston with an ankle injury. “They love football. They’re loud. They’re into it the whole game.”

There are plenty of familiar faces from the last time the teams met in Kansas City for that AFC title game; Mahomes and Tannehill are two of them. Another is Titans running back Derrick Henry, who just&nbsp;gashed the Texans for 219 yards&nbsp;and two touchdowns last week. He was held to 69 yards rushing by Kansas City on Jan. 19, 2020.

“There are going to be things that you’re going to do to try and stop him. I think the whole NFL has tried that somewhere,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who is 20-3 when his teams are coming off a bye. “He’s a great player, and you’re not going to stop him on every play. You just want to get the numbers up where it’s a reasonable number of stops.”

The Chiefs did that pretty well last year, too, holding Henry to 86 yards rushing.

It didn't matter. They still lost in a blowout in Nashville that Mahomes and Co. remember to this day.

“You watch that on film and see how you played, it wasn't just them beating us,” Mahomes said. “We played bad and they just put it down on us at the end of the day. We have to understand they're going to be ready to go.”

WHERE THERE'S A WILL(IS), THERE'S A WAY

If Tannehill isn't available, the Titans would start third-round pick Malik Willis for the second straight game. Willis was 6 of 10 for 55 yards with an interception last week against the Texans.

The Chiefs sent third- and sixth-round picks to the Giants&nbsp;last week for Kadarius Toney, a former first-round pick who had struggled to stay healthy in New York. Toney not only gives the Chiefs a potential game-breaking playmaker at wide receiver, he also can help out in the punt return game, where rookie Skyy Moore has struggled with muffed punts.

“It feels good to be wanted by a team,” said Toney, who has recovered from a pair of hamstring injuries. “I felt like this was a great opportunity for everybody. Fresh start for me, step into the AFC and show what I can do over here.”

The Chiefs will be playing the first of two games without defensive end Frank Clark,&nbsp;who was suspended&nbsp;for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. That could mean more pass-rushing opportunities for Carlos Dunlap, who has two sacks this season and needs two more to reach 100 for his career.

“I've had a couple games now with a chance for it,” Dunlap said. “Want to get that done so I can get over that hump.”

Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie should play for the first time since hurting his hamstring in the opener in Arizona. The first-round pick could have played the past two games, but Kansas City opted to play it safe and wait out the bye week.

The Titans and Chiefs are tied for the second-best record in the AFC behind the Bills, who have beaten them both. That means the game could have playoff implications, such as where the teams would play if they meet again.

“I just focus on ways that we think we can beat the Chiefs and how we can prepare. All that stuff really takes care of itself,” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said. “The preparation, how we get ready and how we ultimately play, not what could be or what might happen down the road.”

Titans visit Chiefs in latest showdown of AFC heavyweights

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy watched from the sideline as Spencer Sanders, his star quarterback, was tackled hard enough on his shoulder during a loss to Kansas State to end up in the injury tent.

Three weeks earlier against TCU, the Jayhawks lost quarterback Jalon Daniels when he was tackled hard on his shoulder, forcing them to turn to Jason Bean with mixed results during what has become a three-game losing streak.

Gundy said Sanders would mostly rest this week, rather than practice like usual, but “he's doing good” and the No. 18 Cowboys are going to “try to get him back and get him going, just like we've been doing.” Meanwhile, Leipold said Daniels practiced during the Jayhawks' bye week, raising hopes that his dual-threat dynamo would face Oklahoma State.

“He's doing some things,” Leipold said without elaborating. “We'll see.”

Even after he was held to 147 yards passing in a 48-0 loss last week to the Wildcats, the versatile Sanders remains second in the Big 12 in yards and touchdowns through the air. He is also second among Big 12 quarterbacks with 343 yards rushing.

If he can't go, the Cowboys (6-2, 3-2 Big 12) would turn to Gundy's son, Gunnar, who finished out the game last Saturday.

“Hopefully Spencer will play," Mike Gundy said, “because obviously that's a different level. But if (not), then we go through the path that maybe you're talking about and we figure it out, we go play and see where it goes.”

The Jayhawks (5-3, 2-3) would stick with Bean if Daniels is unable to play. But while they are similar in style, Daniels is completing a higher percentage of his passes, running for more yards per carry, and he's thrown 11 touchdown passes against one interception while Bean has thrown nine touchdown passes and three interceptions.

“All of our guys practice the same way, practice the same plays. Very similar to Kansas,” Gundy said. "You look at the games that the other quarterback played in, just recently, they’re running the same plays and we run the same plays.”

The week off could also help the Jayhawks get dynamic defensive back Cobee Bryant back from an ankle injury that he sustained against Oklahoma on Oct. 15. He has two interceptions, including one he returned 86 yards for a touchdown.

Gundy blamed some of the Cowboys' struggles at Kansas State on some changes in practice that he made to deal with a rash of injuries. He didn't describe them in detail, but Gundy said practice would be back to normal this week.

“There’s a lot of different ways to handle this as a coach, different philosophies," he said, "but one consistent philosophy for most coaches is when you show up Saturday you want to have as many guys as you can have. I was a little more concerned than maybe should have been about where we were at from an injury standpoint.”

Deondre Jackson had six carries for 20 yards against the Wildcats, the most work the Texas A&amp;M transfer has had since he arrived at Oklahoma State. Or in his college career, for that matter — he had four carries over the past three seasons.

“It was certainly something we can work with," Gundy said.

The Cowboys are a game behind Kansas State and two back of TCU in the Big 12, and having lost to both, their hopes of playing in the conference title game would likely be dashed by another loss. Kansas is still trying to win a sixth game and become bowl-eligible for the first time since 2008.

The Jayhawks return home for the first time in nearly a month, and much has changed: They were 5-0 heading into their last home game and have now lost three straight, including two on the road. But Leipold is hopeful fans, who had sold out their previous three home games, turn out in big numbers once again on Saturday.

(WATCH) Friday on Sports Day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals had qualified candidates to become their next manager already in the organization, including one hired by the Chicago White Sox just this week. Yet their six-person committee that waded through the options came to the conclusion that an outside voice was necessary.

It wound up belonging to Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro.

The Royals formally introduced Quatraro as their new manager during a news conference Thursday at Kauffman Stadium. With his wife and two boys watching, Quatraro slipped a white No. 33 jersey over a neatly pressed shirt and gold tie, shook hands with general manager J.J. Picollo and proceeded to lay out a vision for turning around a club that won the World Series a mere seven years ago but quickly returned to irrelevance.

“I've been really fortunate to be around good coaches and people that mentored me,” said Quatraro, who also worked alongside Terry Francona in Cleveland. “As excited as I am to be named the manager, I'm even more excited to jump into the process. I'm extremely process-oriented, and the process we all envision here is building a championship environment that brings the Royals back to the top tier of baseball, and be that way year after year.”

There already are some building blocks in place.

Quatraro is in the process of calling current players, and the first two were longtime catcher Salvador Perez and up-and-coming star Bobby Witt Jr. Perez represents the past and present of the organization, one of the stars of that 2015 title team, while Witt represents the future as one of the best rookies in baseball this past season.

Quatraro will lean on those two, along with a bevy of young position players that made their big league debuts last season, to quickly improve on a 65-97 finish and once again help the Royals play meaningful baseball past June.

“There were some real similarities this year — certain points in the year — they were running out seven rookies in the lineup, and we had a similar stretch in Tampa this year,” Quatraro said. “That's challenging to grow in that environment.”

Yet the Rays have done it year after year, first with Joe Maddon calling the shots and the past eight seasons with Kevin Cash in charge. Tampa Bay, a small-market franchise with limited resources — in other words, a club like the Royals — has managed to reach the playoffs each of the past four years with a trip to the World Series in 2020.

That track record is one of the reasons Picollo chose Quatraro over Royals bench coach Pedro Grifol, who was hired to manage the White Sox, and internal candidates Vance Wilson and Scott Thorman.

“It kind of pains me to say that because I've been very intentional in hiring people internally,” said Picollo, a longtime Royals front-office executive who was put in charge of baseball operations when Dayton Moore was fired late in the season.

“You want your minor league staff to feel like there’s going to be opportunity for them to reach the major leagues in whatever position it is,” Picollo said. “So we did have good internal candidates. They all interviewed very well. You know, they all have different strengths. But after we got through that initial work, our committee of people felt like we needed at this time a little outside influence, fresh thoughts, challenge us professionally as well. And I know Matt will do that.”

The Royals intended to keep most of their hitting staff in place, though that may change depending upon whom Grifol hires in Chicago. But the previous pitching staff already had been let go, so Quatraro — working with Picollo — must not only hire a pitching coach but build out an entire pitching program that spans the organization.

In fact, when Quatraro was asked Thursday what the biggest common denominator in the success of Cleveland and Tampa Bay has been over the years, his one-word reply was: “Pitching.”

“There's a tremendous amount of talent on this pitching staff now. I've talked to a handful of guys already,” Quatraro said. “I can't tell you exactly what the process has been, but what I'm looking for now moving forward is maximizing their potential through tweaks in approach pitch usage. The talent is clearly there.”

Yet for whatever reason, the Royals have continually failed to maximize it. Top prospects have flamed out in the minors, and many that have reached the big leagues have initially struggled only to flourish with other organizations.

One thing is certain: The Royals believe Quatraro is the right choice to change that narrative.

“When we announced this deal earlier in the week,” Royals principle owner John Sherman said Thursday, “I traded text messages with Matt to congratulate him, and he thanked me for the confidence we have shown in him. And I would turn that around and say, ‘Thank you for having the confidence in the Kansas City Royals.’”

on two years of probation and fined it $5,000, but spared the school
major penalties from NCAA allegations leveled in the aftermath of a
federal investigation of corruption in college basketball. The
Independent Accountability Resolution Process also declined to
penalize former Cardinals coach Rick Pitino. Chris Mack, Pitino’s
successor who was fired in January, also was not penalized for
additional allegations announced last year by the NCAA. Former
Cardinals assistant coaches Jordan Fair and Kenny Johnson received
two-year show-cause orders for Level I violations.

Justin Verlander overcame an early jolt to grit out the World Series

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Will Howard could have sulked when he lost the starting quarterback job at Kansas State to Adrian Martinez, the transfer from Nebraska who had never thrown a pass for the Wildcats. Howard could have put his name in the transfer portal and looked for playing time at another school.

But then he wouldn't have found himself in the unlikeliest of spots last Saturday night, getting carried off the field by delirious teammates and fans after a 48-0 rout of then-No. 9 Oklahoma State.

Howard threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns without an interception, sending the No. 13 Wildcats (6-2, 3-2) soaring up the AP poll and keeping them a game back of TCU in the Big 12 title race.

“Football is a game, it's truly all up here,” Howard said, pointing at his head, “especially at the quarterback position. I've learned a lot of things — what to do, what not to do. And all the other games I played in 2020 and 2021, all those struggles and hardships I had, helped this to happen and helped the success we're having right now."

It's created a predicament at Kansas State, though. Martinez was only ruled out against Oklahoma State about 30 minutes before kickoff, and there's a chance he could be recovered enough from a knee injury to play against Texas on Saturday.

Do the Wildcats go back to their starter or keep riding Howard's hot hand against the Longhorns?

“We'll find out how the week goes," Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said Tuesday. "I don't have the answer.”

The Longhorns (5-3, 3-2), meanwhile, are coming off their bye with some quarterback issues of their own.

Quinn Ewers was just 19 of 49 for 319 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions against the Cowboys two weeks ago, badly overthrowing wide receivers while Texas was blowing the lead in a 41-34 loss. Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian said he never considered pulling Ewers for Hudson Card, but another poor performance could change his mind.

“Sometimes you have to learn it the hard way, playing quarterback: When we win, you probably get too much credit, and when we lose, you probably get too much blame, and you have to be careful to ride that emotional rollercoaster,” Sarkisian said. “Keep the noise quiet and know that myself, the coaching staff, the team is in the foxhole with him, and we’ll go to battle with him every day, and I think that’s the approach he’s had and will continue to have.”

One factor in whether Howard or Martinez will play going forward is the redshirt status of Howard, who has now played in two of the four games he would be allowed while maintaining his year of eligibility.

“That's definitely a consideration,” Howard said. “It's something we still need to talk about, something we're still deciding on, but you know, obviously the mission is the mission: focus on winning and going as far as we can this year.”

Kansas State debuted at No. 13 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, the first time the Wildcats have been in the poll since Week 11 of the 2019 season. Texas came in at 24th.

Texas running back Bijan Robinson leads the Big 12 with 920 yards rushing, and Kansas State counterpart Deuce Vaughn is second with 902. And wouldn't you know it? The two have become good friends away from the field.

“I actually talked to him this past weekend. He wished me luck against Oklahoma state, we texted after the game,” Vaughn said. “This is already Year 3 that we're playing. It's going to be fun to compete against each other one more time.”

The Wildcats are averaging 228 yards rushing per game, putting them just outside of the top 10 nationally. But they'll be facing one of the best run defenses in the nation in Texas, which is holding opponents to 3.32 yards per carry.

Sarkisian was recruited to Kansas State by Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder out of El Camino College, but he ultimately went to BYU. Coincidentally, the Cougars played the Wildcats in the Cotton Bowl in his final game as their quarterback.

“I went back there as a coach with USC. I’ve been there a couple of times,” Sarkisian said. “Great environment.”

Great Bend playoff football game time change

It only took a few seconds for Rachel Kennedy to grab her phone after she left the checkout line at the sporting-goods store, where she had just finished buying a new glove, pants, belt, cleats and the rest of the equipment for her son, Liam's, upcoming baseball season.

“I texted his dad and asked him, ‘Did we really spend $350 on all this last year?’" Kennedy said.

Sticker shock in youth sports is nothing new, but the onslaught of double-digit inflation across America this year has added a costly wrinkle on the path to the ballparks, swimming pools and dance studios across America. It has forced some families, like Kennedy's, to scale back the number of seasons, or leagues, or sports that their kids can play in any given year, while motivating league organizers to become more creative in devising ways to keep prices down and participation up.

Recent studies, conducted before inflation began impacting daily life across America, showed families spent around $700 a year on kids' sports, with travel and equipment accounting for the biggest portion of the expense.

Everyone from football coaches to swim-meet coordinators are struggling to to find less-expensive ways of keeping families coming through the doors. Costs of uniforms and equipment, along with facility rental, are shooting up — all products of the onslaught of supply-chain issues, hard-to-find staff, lack of coaches and rising gas and travel costs that were exacerbated, or sometimes caused, by the COVID-19 pandemic that disrupted and sometimes canceled seasons altogether. The annual inflation rate for the 12 months ending in September was 8.2%.

Kennedy, who lives in Monroe, Ohio, and describes her family as “on the lower end of middle class,” opted Liam out of summer and fall ball, not so much because of the fees to join the leagues but because “those don't include all the equipment you need.”

“And gas prices have gotten to the point where we don't have the bandwidth to drive one or two hours away” for the full slate of weekend games and tournaments that dot the typical youth baseball schedule each season. The Kennedys rarely stayed the night in hotels for multi-day tournaments.

A study published by The Aspen Institute that was conducted before COVID-19 said on average across all sports, parents already spent more each year on travel ($196 per child, per sport) than any other facet of the sport: equipment, lessons, registration, etc. A number of reports say hotel prices in some cities are around 30% higher than last year, and about the same amount higher than in 2019, before the start of the pandemic.

At the venues, it costs more to hire umpires to call the games, groundskeepers to keep fields ready, janitors to clean indoor venues and coaches to run practices. Even sports that are traditionally on the less-expensive end of the spectrum are running into issues.

“You talk to people and you say ‘What do you mean you get $28 an hour to be a lifeguard?'” said Steve Roush, a former leader in the Olympic world who now serves as executive director of Southern California Swimming, which sanctions meets across one of America's most expensive regions. “The going rate has just gone through the roof, and that's if you can find somebody at all. And that accounts for part of the big gap” in prices for swimming meets today versus three years ago.

One Denver-area dance studio director, who did not want her name used because of the competitive nature of her business, said she started looking for new uniform suppliers as a way of keeping costs down for families. Some destinations for the two out-of-state competitions that are typical in a given season have been shifted to cities that have more — and, so, less expensive — flight options. Some of those teams only make a third trip, this one to a major competition, if it receives a “paid” invitation.

“The cost is just so much to ask them to travel a third time,” the director said. “And oftentimes you don’t know that you’re getting that bid until February or March and you have to turn around and travel to it in April, and that turnaround just makes it very hard from an expense standpoint."

At stake is the future of a youth-sports industry that generated around $20 billion, according to one estimate, before COVID-19 sharply curtailed spending in 2020.

Also, inflation is giving some families a chance to revisit an issue that first came up when COVID-19 more or less canceled all youth leagues for a year or more.

“There was some optimism that maybe families would be like, 'OK, let's maybe have a more balanced approach to how we're going to participate in sports,'" said Jennifer Agans, an assistant professor at Penn State who studies the impact of youth sports. “But until this economic wave, everyone was so excited to go back to normal that we forgot the lessons we learned from slowing our lives down. Maybe this gives another chance to reevaluate that.”

It's a choice not everyone wants to make, but still one that is being imposed more on people in the middle and lower class. Another Aspen Institute report from before the pandemic concluded children from low-income families were half as likely to play sports as kids from upper-income families.

Kennedy said she has long been fortunate to have a supportive family — including grandparents who chip in to defray some costs of Liam's baseball. But some things had to go. A spot on a travel team can reach up to $1,200, and that's before equipment and travel, “and we just don't have that kind of money,” Kennedy said.

Still, Liam loves baseball and sitting it out altogether wasn't a real choice.

“It's the whole parental, ‘I’ll go hungry to make sure my kids get what they need' situation,'” Kennedy said. “So if I give up my Starbucks, or some little extras for me, then it's worth it to make sure he gets to play. But it's certainly not getting any less expensive."

Inflation puts tighter squeeze on already pricey kids sports

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs expect to have newly acquired wide receiver Kadarius Toney on the field Sunday night when they face the Tennessee Titans in what could become a pivotal game in the race for AFC playoff seeding.

They also plan to have first-round draft pick Trent McDuffie back at cornerback following his hamstring injury.

The Chiefs acquired Toney last week from the New York Giants for third- and sixth-round picks in next year's draft, hoping to upgrade a wide receiver room that has produced mixed results this season. They also wanted another wide receiver who will be under contract next season, when players such as JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman are free agents.

“Right now I haven't any expectations. I just want to come in and do what's asked of me,” Toney said Wednesday. “I've always been a smart player, but I feel like I'm grasping (the playbook) gradually, and whatever I pick up they give me more.”

Toney, who was drafted in the first round by the Giants last year, has struggled through injuries and appeared in just 12 of a possible 24 games. He hurt his right hamstring in training camp, tweaked the injury in Week 2 against Carolina, then he hurt his left hamstring earlier this month, which are a big reason he has two catches for no yards this season.

Toney professed himself healthy now, though, and the Chiefs (5-2) think his speed and elusiveness will fit seamlessly within an offense that was humming before his arrival. They're coming off a 44-23 rout of the 49ers before their bye week.

“It's about getting on the same page, at the end of the day,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “Our offense is a hard offense to learn. You don't want to overwhelm guys and get them in there where they can't function. But at the same time, you want to give them some chances. So we'll bring him in so he can go out there and be a factor for us on the field.”

The Chiefs were interested in Toney prior to the 2021 draft, but they didn't have a first-round pick and the Giants snapped him up 20th overall. And they tried to get Toney again this past offseason, when they signed Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in free agency in a bid to replace the production they traded away with Tyreek Hill.

General manager Brett Veach finally got him last Thursday, swinging the trade well before this week's deadline in the hopes that Toney could get up to speed during the Chiefs bye week in time to play against the Titans.

It helps that Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was a longtime assistant in Kansas City.

“We'll try to work him in. He's a smart kid,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “He's been with us a couple of days. We've had a chance to talk to him. He picks things up fairly easy. He was with Kafka, too, so a little bit of the plays, the terminology — a little bit is familiar with him. He has a foundation.”

Meanwhile, the Chiefs anticipate having McDuffie on the field for the first time since the season opener at Arizona. He's been eligible to come back the past two games, but the Chiefs decided to play it safe and wait until after the bye.

They traded cornerback Rashad Fenton to the Falcons for a conditional pick on Tuesday to create roster space for him.

“We try to keep open communication with these guys, see what they're feeling,” Reid said. “Their coaches know them; see what their coach sees, talk with the players, see how he feels, and obviously the medical staff and trainers. And when it was all said and done, we said,' You know what? He needs a little more time.' But we know he wants to play.”

McDuffie will finally get that opportunity again Sunday night against the Titans.

I just want to come in and do what's asked of me,” Toney said Wednesday. “I've always been a smart player, but I feel like I'm grasping (the playbook) gradually, and whatever I pick up they give me more.”Toney, who was drafted in the first round by the Giants last year, has struggled through injuries and appeared in just 12 of a possible 24 games. He hurt his right hamstring in training camp, tweaked the injury in Week 2 against Carolina, then he hurt his left hamstring earlier this month, which are a big reason he has two catches for no yards this season.Toney professed himself healthy now, though, and the Chiefs (5-2) think his speed and elusiveness will fit seamlessly within an offense that was humming before his arrival. They're coming off a 44-23 rout of the 49ers before their bye week.“It's about getting on the same page, at the end of the day,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “Our offense is a hard offense to learn. You don't want to overwhelm guys and get them in there where they can't function. But at the same time, you want to give them some chances. So we'll bring him in so he can go out there and be a factor for us on the field.”The Chiefs were interested in Toney prior to the 2021 draft, but they didn't have a first-round pick and the Giants snapped him up 20th overall. And they tried to get Toney again this past offseason, when they signed Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in free agency in a bid to replace the production they traded away with Tyreek Hill.General manager Brett Veach finally got him last Thursday, swinging the trade well before this week's deadline in the hopes that Toney could get up to speed during the Chiefs bye week in time to play against the Titans.It helps that Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was a longtime assistant in Kansas City.“We'll try to work him in. He's a smart kid,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “He's been with us a couple of days. We've had a chance to talk to him. He picks things up fairly easy. He was with Kafka, too, so a little bit of the plays, the terminology — a little bit is familiar with him. He has a foundation.”Meanwhile, the Chiefs anticipate having McDuffie on the field for the first time since the season opener at Arizona. He's been eligible to come back the past two games, but the Chiefs decided to play it safe and wait until after the bye.They traded cornerback Rashad Fenton to the Falcons for a conditional pick on Tuesday to create roster space for him.“We try to keep open communication with these guys, see what they're feeling,” Reid said. “Their coaches know them; see what their coach sees, talk with the players, see how he feels, and obviously the medical staff and trainers. And when it was all said and done, we said,' You know what? He needs a little more time.' The Barton Community College men's swimming and diving team performed sensational over the weekend at the Kansas Collegiate Showdown hosted at the Haysville Natatorium.

Vogt da Silva notched his hardware in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.03), 1000-yard freestyle (10:10.20), 1650-yard freestyle (17:18.13) and 400-yard medley (4:24.37) while McCabe collected his victories in the 100-yard freestyle (48.30), 200-yard medley (2:00.97), 100-yard butterfly (52.69) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.99).Jethro Irvine, Dominik Strba and Louis Milczynski joined Vogt da Silva and McCabe picking-up a pair of first place finishes. Irvine securing his top two times in the 50-yard freestyle (23.68) and 100-yard medley (54.25) with Strba collecting his pair in the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.18) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.95) while Milczynski rounded out the multi individual winners in the 50-yard freestyle (21.93) and 100-yard freestyle (48.58).Brody Feist had the biggest impact of the weekend resetting the program's record book in the 1-meter dive with a score of 152.35.Also joining Feist with individual golds was Jonathan Beers in the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.74) and Cooper Cole's 50-yard breaststroke (27.33).The Cougars swept the relay events claiming all four in the 400-yard freestyle (3:18.38), 200-yard medley (1:38.01), 800-yard freestyle (7:21.53) and 200-yard freestyle (1:26.67).Barton concludes its' four weekend stretch Friday and Saturday at the UNK Invitational held in Kearney, Nebraska.Barton WomenThe Barton Community College women's swimming and diving team pieced together its' most successful weekend of the early season at the Kansas Collegiate Showdown hosted at the Haysville Natatorium.Battling as the lone two-year program, the Cougars pieced together 11 titles in the 29 events competing against Sterling College and the University of Saint Mary.Freshman Rachel Sims highlighted the weekend claiming one of the six individual golds for Barton while rewriting her earlier season's program record in the 1-meter dive with a score of 208.00.Vali Bequette notched the shortest race of the weekend capturing the always-exciting 50-yard freestyle (27.26) while Linda Franco also added a gold in the thrilling 100-yard freestyle (57.23).The Cougars swept the 200-yard events with Olivia Kerr touching the wall the fastest in the medley (2:22.04) and Silvana Jacquez Viveros in the backstroke (2:14.95).Dominique Cos rounded out the individual awards with a gold in the 400-yard medley (5:05.51).Barton was perfect in all five-relay events claiming the 400-yard medley (4:16.66), 400-yard freestyle (3:53.06), 200-yard medley (1:56.93), 200-yard freestyle (1:43.73) and 800-yard freestyle (8:50.70).Barton concludes its' four weekend stretch Friday and Saturday at the UNK Invitational held in Kearney, Nebraska.
