The National Federation of State High School Associations and ADVANCE, powered by Anomaly and TeamAltemus, have partnered to address Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) with a new, free course by the NFHS Learning Center that details the expectations and realities of NIL in the current interscholastic landscape.

Since July 1, 2021, at which time college student-athletes could officially profit from their name, image and likeness, the topic of NIL has remained at the forefront of discussion for interscholastic athletics and activities. The NFHS and ADVANCE designed the “Name, Image and Likeness” course to not only define NIL, but to also provide examples of how it can be leveraged by high school students, identify misconceptions that various stakeholders have about NIL, and highlight aspects that students and families should consider when interested in pursuing NIL opportunities.

“The NFHS Learning Center is excited to bring increased awareness of name, image and likeness to the interscholastic community and beyond,” said Dan Schuster, NFHS director of educational services. “We believe that this course will help people better understand what NIL is, and, maybe more importantly, what it is not.”

The “Name, Image and Likeness” course suggests ways in which student-athletes can leverage NIL to promote their own identity via a brand or business. The course also addresses intellectual property such as shirts, flyers and artwork, which belong to the student-athlete who is promoting his or her own identity. Permitted profit from NIL is absent of promotion of direct competition or performance. In addition to providing other examples of ways to leverage NIL, the course explores differences in NIL and “Pay-for-Play,” a forbidden practice that occurs when a student-athlete earns money for competing.

The launch of “Name, Image and Likeness” coincides with the unveiling of a new user experience that Schuster said will “better showcase” the NFHS Learning Center’s accredited content. It features improved navigation, resources, transcripts, higher quality videos and a larger screen.

“The upgrades to course-taking will enhance the experience and better showcase the high-quality accredited content to learners across the country,” Schuster said.

The NFHS Learning Center’s development of the course took place in concert with ADVANCE, the contributor of the course’s content. ADVANCE provides comprehensive advisory and strategic NIL solutions that educate, empower and equip all stakeholders in the collegiate and high school athletics ecosystem. Its work with NIL curriculum development includes in-depth evaluation and collaborative solutions designed to maximize on-campus resources, knowledge, athlete instruction and live data.

Although some states currently permit NIL participation for student-athletes, the rules may not be the same in each. Many states continue to work through NIL legislation and proposals, while others do not permit NIL involvement. NIL participants are encouraged to review the policies of their state, league or school before engaging in any form of NIL compensation.

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has made its first change of the season to its “Sunday Night Football” schedule by moving the Nov. 20 game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers into prime time.

The game between the AFC West rivals will kick off at 8:20 p.m. EST on NBC with the matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers moving to 4:25 p.m. EST on CBS.

The Chargers will appear on Sunday night in consecutive weeks. They will travel to San Francisco to take on the 49ers in prime time on Sunday. The Bolts are also scheduled to host the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night on Jan. 1 in Week 17.

The Chiefs will be making their third of four scheduled Sunday night appearances. They defeated Tampa Bay on Oct. 2 and Tennessee in overtime this past Sunday. Kansas City is also scheduled to play Denver under the lights on Dec. 11.

NFL flexes Week 11 Chiefs-Chargers matchup to prime time

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Keyontae Johnson scored 13 points in his first real action since collapsing during a game nearly two years ago, and Kansas State opened the season under new coach Jerome Tang with a 93-59 romp over UT Rio Grande Valley on Monday night.

Nae’Qwan Tomlin and Markquis Nowell led the Wildcats with 14 points apiece.

Tang took over the Wildcats' program after serving as an assistant to Scott Drew at Baylor from 2003-22.

Johnson, the Southeastern Conference's preseason player of the year in 2020, transferred to Kansas State this summer after four years at Florida. He spent the past two recovering from a suspected heart condition that caused him to crash to the floor while coming out of a timeout during a game in December 2020.

Johnson received medical clearance to play at Kansas State, something that wasn't going to happen at Florida.

Johnson spent most of the past two seasons cheering on teammates from the bench as he remained enrolled in school and on scholarship.

He did take the court for a ceremonial few dribbles and a farewell on senior night against Kentucky in March.

But he was full go Monday night and hit three 3-pointers in the lopsided opener.

Nowell sank all three of his 3s and added seven assists and four steals for the Wildcats, who made 12 of 27 from beyond the arc (44.4%). Tomlin added a team-high eight rebounds.

Abayomi Iyiola finished with 12 points, while fellow reserves Ismael Massoud and Desi Sills scored 10 each.

Justin Johnson totaled 20 points to lead the Vaqueros. Freshman Adante' Holiman came off the bench to score 13.

The Wildcats scored 31 points off 26 Vaquero turnovers. UTRGV struggled from 3-point range, making 4 of 15.

stage of the season since 2010, when teams averaged 21.7 points per
game. Scoring is down a staggering 3.5 points per game from this
point two years ago when offenses peaked in partly empty stadiums due
to the pandemic, and 1.6 points per game from last season.

were swayed by a 2010 meeting in Paris between then-French president
Nicolas Sarkozy and FIFA vice president Michel Platini. The
86-year-old Blatter spoke with a Swiss newspaper group. It was his
first major interview since being acquitted with Platini in July of
financial misconduct at FIFA.

Tuesday on Sports Day

LAWRENCE, Kan. – After combining for 334 yards of offense on Saturday, sophomore Devin Neal has been named the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

Neal rushed for 224 yards and had 110 yards through the air in Kansas’ 37-16 victory over No. 18 Oklahoma State. Neal became the first Jayhawk in school history with 200+ rushing yards and 100+ receiving yards in a game, while his 334 combined yards are the most since 1991, when Tony Sands combined for 398 yards (396 rush, 2 receiving) against Missouri.

From Lawrence, Kansas, Neal rushed a career-high 32 times for 224 yards, including a 31 yard rushing touchdown against Oklahoma State. Neal added six receptions for 110 yards through the air.

Neal’s Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honor is the second of the season for the Jayhawks, after Jalon Daniels was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19. Kansas now has two Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in school history.

Kansas’ Lonnie Phelps was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 5, followed by Cobee Bryant being named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 12.

Kansas’ 37-16 win over No. 18 Oklahoma State made the Jayhawks bowl eligible for the first time since 2008, while it was the Jayhawks’ first win over a ranked opponent since 2010 (Georgia Tech).

Kansas (6-3, 3-3 Big 12) will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 12 when they take on Texas Tech (4-5, 2-4 Big 12) in Lubbock. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. CT.

Devin Neal Named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nick Bolton is supposed to be thinking about the next defensive series when he's on the sideline, especially considering the Kansas City Chiefs linebacker is responsible for making sure his guys are lined up properly on the field.

Even for Bolton, though, it is hard to keep his eyes off Patrick Mahomes.

His latest did-you-see-that performance came Sunday night against the Tennessee Titans, when he set franchise records for completions (43) and attempts (68) while throwing for 446 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

But it was his sheer willpower that lifted the Chiefs from a 17-9 deficit to a 20-17 overtime victory.

There was the third-and-17 play that broke down, when Mahomes scrambled seemingly eight different directions before he was wrestled down after a 20-yard gain. The third-and-9 play, when the Chiefs needed a touchdown with just over four minutes to go, and Mahomes took off to his right and bulldozed his way into the end zone.

And the tying 2-point try, when the Titans knew he'd have the ball in his hands and Mahomes converted anyway.

“We kind of get spoiled watching greatness every week,” Bolton said with a smile. “I was proud of him.”

The Chiefs (6-2) certainly needed him, just as they have all season. Mahomes led them from behind to beat the Chargers, threw three TD passes in a win over Tampa Bay and led a late 75-yard touchdown drive to put away the Raiders.

Even when he's gotten very little help, Mahomes has been able to make more magic.

It's been the one constant for Kansas City this season.

“We had like, 90 plays, and at the end of the 90 plays he’s running around like it’s play 3,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of Mahomes' latest starring turn against Tennessee, “and he’s still able to throw the football and control the huddle and do all the things that you’re supposed to do.”

The Chiefs gained 164 yards on their last two scoring drives. Mahomes accounted for 124 through the air and 36 on the ground — all but 4 of them — despite relentless pressure from the Tennessee defense.

Yes, Reid was quick to compliment the Kansas City defense, which kept his team in the game long enough for Mahomes to make those late plays. And he knows full well that his quarterback is going to need more help going forward.

Still, the performance by Mahomes on Sunday night provided another memorable chapter in another season full of them.

“He's Pat," Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman said, “and Pat is going to be Pat.”

The Chiefs defense held the Titans to 38 yards total offense in the second half, and more importantly, shut down Derrick Henry. He rumbled for nearly 100 in the first half, but gained just 22 yards on seven carries after the break.

That's more like what the Chiefs expect from what had been the league's No. 3 rush defense this season.

“We talked about the defense that we wanted to be when we first went into training camp and in the first half were not that defense,” Chiefs safety Justin Reid said. “So we came together at halftime, really dug our heels in, talked about coming together. Nobody needed to go out and play any hero ball, we just need to come out and take care of our one-eleventh, trust your teammates to take care of their job next to you and you do your job in front of you.”

The reason Mahomes threw the ball nearly 70 times was that they almost entirely abandoned the run. Mahomes had six carries for 63 yards on scrambles, but the rest of the Chiefs combined to run 13 times for 14 yards.

It was only the latest example of a run game that has been inconsistent this season.

“We can do a little bit better up front," Reid said. "We can be a little more patient at the running back position, and as coaches we can always dial up different things, you know, and try to figure out something that might fit a little bit better.”

JuJu Smith-Schuster followed up his big game against San Francisco, when he had seven catches for 124 yards and a score, by hauling in 10 catches for 88 yards. He has become Mahomes' most reliable target besides Travis Kelce this season.

Just about everyone in the Kansas City backfield has struggled at some point this season. And everyone did against the Titans. Isiah Pacheco ran five times for 5 yards, Clyde Edwards-Helaire four times for 5 yards and Jerick McKinnon three times for 4 yards.

The Chiefs dealt with a rash of injuries early in the season, but they are as healthy as they've been since camp. Tight end Blake Bell could be back from injured reserve soon, and right tackle Lucas Niang is finally off the PUP list.

Chiefs marvel at Mahomes yet realize he can't do it alone

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Nae'Qwan Tomlin and Markquis Nowell scored 14 points apiece and Kansas State opened the season under new coach Jerome Tang with a 93-59 romp over UT Rio Grande Valley on Monday night.

Tang took over the Wildcats' program after serving as an assistant to Scott Drew at Baylor from 2003-2022.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — There was a moment just before halftime Monday night when Kansas forward Jalen Wilson watched an Omaha player bury a 3-pointer at the buzzer, and he looked over at the bench expecting to catch Bill Self's wrath.

Self was serving the first game in a school-imposed four-game suspension, along with assistant Kurtis Townsend, so Wilson and the rest of the Jayhawks got a reprieve from one of their coach's pet peeves. The buzzer-beater hardly mattered in the end, either, as No. 5 Kansas began its national title defense with an 89-64 rout of the Mavericks.

“One thing about our team, no matter what year it's been, we always step up no matter when we have adversity,” said Wilson, who had 19 points and 11 rebounds. “We came together. We wanted to set the tone for the year. And we have the greatest coaching staff in America. It doesn't matter who is out there leading us.”

In this case it was Norm Roberts, one of Self's longtime assistants and the former St. John's head coach, calling the shots.

Self and Townsend were suspended last week as part of the fallout from a 2017 federal investigation into college basketball corruption. The case against Kansas has been mired in an independent review process for years, so the school self-imposed the penalties rather than continue waiting for a resolution.

“It was a lot of fun. The arena has a lot of energy,” Roberts said. “Our guys felt that energy and pushed us forward.”

Despite returning only two starters from the team that rallied to beat North Carolina in the national championship game, the new-look Jayhawks built a double-digit lead by the midway point of the first half and never looked back.

Gradey Dick poured in 23 points in his debut. Bobby Pettiford Jr. added 13 points, Dajuan Harris had 11 points and eight assists, and Texas Tech transfer Kevin McCullar Jr. scored 10 as the Jayhawks won their 50th straight home opener.

Jaeden Marshall scored 13 points and Luke Jungers had 12 for the Mavericks.

“We're a young basketball team in a place like this, and it kind of caught up to us,” first-year Omaha coach Chris Crutchfield said. “The pace caught up to us and no doubt the physicality caught up to us.”

Wilson, who declared for the NBA draft before returning to school, showed he can go from being a talented role player to an unequivocal leader. He drained three early 3-pointers, kept getting easy baskets by cutting to the rim, and was just as good at the defensive end, where he made every shot difficult for the undersized Mavericks.

Meanwhile, Dick lived up to the expectations that come with being a five-star and top-20 national prospect. The rangy forward from Kansas prep powerhouse Sunrise Christian Academy knocked down his first two 3-pointers and, like Wilson, showed a natural ability to get easy baskets at the rim.

“I grew up dreaming about this night,” Dick said, “and watching guys before me and wanting to be in their shoes.”

The Mavericks, picked to finish second-to-last in the Summit League, did their best to hang around into the second half, and they even closed to 50-43 on a 3-pointer from Jungers with 16:52 left.

That's when the Jayhawks turned up their defense, got into transition and began hitting 3s.

They rolled off 10 straight points to restore their cushion, then went on another 15-point run a few minutes later, turning a 68-55 lead into an 83-55 advantage and allowing Roberts to empty the bench down the stretch.

Kansas got off to a slow start against Pittsburg State in its exhibition game, and it had plenty of sluggish moments through the first 25 minutes against the Mavericks. No. 5 Kansas opens with 89-64 rout of Omaha without Self

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Craig Porter Jr. scored 16 of his career-high 22 points in the first half, and new-look Wichita State opened its new season with a 79-55 win over Central Arkansas on Monday night at Charles Koch Arena.

10 of the 12 players that checked in for WSU (1-0) did so for the first time in a Shocker uniform, setting a school record for most debuts. The old mark of nine was established during the 1979 and 2018 openers.

Porter – one of just two holdovers from last year's active roster – looked like an entirely different player, as well, hunting shots and more-often-than-not sinking them. He went 9-of-11 from the field and added four assists and three steals.

Monday marked the first time in 45 career games at WSU that Porter has finished alone atop the team scoring chart.

The Shockers scored the game's first 11 points and mounted another 20-2 run just before halftime to take a 41-21 advantage into the locker room. They led by as many as 28 down the stretch.

Quincy Ballard supplied 10 of WSU's 38 bench points on 4-of-5 shooting and blocked a pair of shots.

Camren Hunter and Johannes Kirisipuu scored 13-each for Central Arkansas (0-1), which made just 4-of-30 threes and finished the night at 30.1 percent from the field.

WSU shot 43.8 percent, sinking 6-of-21 threes. The Shockers outscored the visitors 17-7 at the foul line and won the turnover (10-14) and rebounding battles (47-42).

WSU's 10 newcomers (eight transfer and two redshirts) also set a school record for most collective points in an opener with 54. A group of nine debutants that included Antoine Carr, Cliff Levingston and Randy Smithson combined to set the old mark of 50 points in the 1979 opener. Markis McDuffie, Landry Shamet and Antoine Grady headlined a group that tied that mark in 2015.

UCA ranked 12th nationally in tempo in 2021-22 and had designs on pushing the pace again on Monday night. The Shockers instead committed just 10 turnovers and their 13.3 turnover percentage was their fifth lowest in 51 games under Isaac Brown.

Porter has blocked at least one shot in each of his last seven games.

Porter had 16 points at halftime and sank a three just over a minute into the second half to best his previous career scoring high (18 vs. Tulane on Jan. 12, 2022).

The Shockers are 1-0 for the 28th time in 30 seasons. They've won all three season openers under Brown.

WSU has won 26 of its last 27 home openers.

The Shockers took a 2-0 lead in the all-time series with Central Arkansas. They also defeated the Bears in December, 2019.

The Barton Community College wrestling team opened the 2022-23 campaign Sunday at the Dan Harris Open held in Bonner Springs, Kansas.

Competing against a loaded field consisting of NCAA Division II, NAIA and other NJCAA programs, the Cougars would conclude the day with a 6-12 record battling in six of the possible 10 weight classes.

NJCAA National Qualifier from a season ago, Dawson Chavez would pace the Barton six pack with a 4-2 record before bowing out in the consolation quarterfinals. Chavez would open his season with a second period fall over Nolan Saale of Central Missouri following an opening round bye. Dropping his second bout in a 14-6 major decision to Central Oklahoma's Gabe Johnson, the sophomore recovered stringing three straight victories on the backside with a fall, tech fall and decision until his day ended in a 6-0 major decision to unattached Cason Lindsey.

Cohen Suchy and Keondre Bonner were the other lone Cougars to post victories. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes was probably having flashbacks Sunday night to his days at Texas Tech, when he would scramble around like a kid playing sandlot football while routinely throwing the ball 60-plus times in a game.

The Chiefs needed all of it — every run, every throw, every yard — to rally past the Tennessee Titans.

Mahomes finished 43 of 68 for 446 yards and a touchdown, and he ran for the tying score and 2-point conversion late in the fourth quarter, before Harrison Butker atoned for two earlier misses by drilling the go-ahead field goal in overtime and lifting the Chiefs to the 20-17 victory.

“I did not know I threw that many,” Mahomes said with a smile, “but yeah, Texas Tech, I threw a couple, so I'm able to do it.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid improved to 21-3 coming off a bye by beating a franchise that has long been his nemesis. He was just 2-9 against the Titans — heck, Reid has three wins against the Chiefs — including a 27-3 loss in Nashville last year.

It was only the second win for Kansas City (6-2) in its last seven games against the Titans.

“You have to be able to win a game like that," Reid said, “where everything isn't just perfect, and your emotions are up and down and you have to fight through. We were so close on so many plays. Step up and let's go.”

Things were spiraling toward another disappointment the way Derrick Henry was chewing up yardage against the Kansas City defense, and the way the Titans (5-3) were shutting down Mahomes and Co. into the fourth quarter.

Indeed, the Chiefs were trailing 17-9 and time was running out when they took over at their own 7-yard line. But in vintage Mahomes fashion, he willed his team downfield. His 20-yard scramble on third-and-17 kept the drive going, and his third-and-9 touchdown scramble along with his 2-point conversion run knotted the game with 2:56 to go.

After the Chiefs won the overtime coin toss, the Titans nearly stopped them, only for Noah Gray to make a nifty third-down catch. Then, Mahomes hit JuJu Smith-Schuster on fourth down to keep the drive alive — and the clock moving.

Butker drilled his 28-yarder to give Kansas City the lead with 4:04 left in overtime.

The Chiefs proceeded to stuff Henry, then sacked Titans rookie Malik Willis on back-to-back plays, before batting down his fourth-down throw to end the game and send fireworks flying into the sky above Arrowhead Stadium.

“When you get to those end of the game situations,” Mahomes said, “you have to try to go out there and make it happen.”

Henry finished with 115 yards rushing and two touchdowns for the Titans. But he didn't get a whole lot of help from Willis, who got his second start in place of the injured Ryan Tannehill, and was just 5 of 16 for 80 yards.

“I'm very disappointed. I feel terrible for the players,” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said. “They compete, and put so much into this, and play through pain and discomfort and any situation. I'm lucky to coach them. They fight.”

The Chiefs figured the best way to shut down Henry, who had run for 219 yards and two touchdowns last week against Houston, was to keep him off the field. They opened the game with a 15-play march that took up 8 1/2 minutes and ended in a field goal, then forced a punt and went 79 yards with Mahomes finding Hardman for the touchdown.

All told, the Chiefs held the ball nearly 13 of the 15 minutes in the first quarter.

The Titans finally got going in the second, and it was Willis using his legs to get Kansas City off balance. The fleet-footed rookie twice scrambled for good yardage before Henry turned a direct snap into a 4-yard TD run.

After forcing a punt, Henry went to work again. He slipped through the line untouched and was finally dragged down 56 yards later. Then, the 247-pound running back pounded into the end zone to give the Titans a 14-9 lead.

It was Henry's 74th career touchdown run, moving him past Earl Campbell for the most in franchise history.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, were incapable of running the ball. And with the Titans no longer worried about stopping the rush, they began to relentlessly pressure Mahomes. Denico Autry's first sack forced a punt, then his second on third-and-1 near midfield prevented Kansas City from getting points just before halftime.

The Titans eventually extended the lead when Mahomes was picked off by rookie Roger McCreary, setting up Randy Bullock's 44-yard field goal. But their own offense started to fizzle, and despite Butker's missed field goal — he also missed an earlier extra point — the Chiefs managed to get the late touchdown they needed to force overtime.

“It was a struggle,” Reid said. “We were up and down and the guys hung together.”

Tannehill was limited in practice Wednesday and Friday but did not practice at all Thursday and was questionable for the game. He tried warming up but never planted his ailing ankle before walking off the field with Tennessee coach Mike Vrabel about two hours before kickoff. He was made inactive 30 minutes later.

Titans: FS Josh Thompson left in the second half with a knee injury. LB Bud Dupree left with a hip injury.

Chiefs: CB Jaylen Watson landed awkwardly on his neck in the first half, though he eventually returned to the game.

The Titans return home to face Denver on Sunday.

Mahomes helps Chiefs rally past Titans 20-17 in overtime

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — There will be something missing from what should have been a festive occasion Monday night at Kansas, when the No. 5 Jayhawks celebrate their latest national championship before opening the new season against Omaha.

Rather than following his team to the court for pregame introductions, Self will probably be sitting at home, forced to watch on TV while beginning a four-game suspension. Kansas officials imposed the punishment on its coach and assistant Kurtis Townsend as part of the fallout of a lengthy FBI investigation into college basketball corruption.

Norm Roberts, who spent six seasons as the head coach at St. John's, will serve as the acting coach.

“Norm and I have been together off-and-on since ‘95," Self said, "and he’ll probably be a voice that the players probably enjoy and respect hearing far more than they have been hearing.

“I think it's something (where) hopefully we can become more mature," he added, "and if that's the case, it's still not good by any stretch. But I have to own it, though, and our players have to make the most of it, and I believe they will.”

Self was allowed to coach the Jayhawks in their lone exhibition, when they overcame a sluggish start against Division II Pittsburg State in a 94-63 win. And the terms of the school-administered suspension allow him to coach the Jayhawks any day but game day, which means the Hall of Fame coach will still largely determine the game plan.

He just won't be on the sidelines against Omaha, North Dakota State and Southern Utah or a showdown against seventh-ranked Duke in the Champions Classic next week in Indianapolis.

Self and Townsend will be back on the bench to face North Carolina State at the Battle 4 Atlantis on Nov. 23.

“Norm will go into the game knowing who the first big off the bench is, who the first guard off the bench is. He knows what plays we'll script,” Self said, “but he'll be in charge. He will be in charge. I'll be at practice, but everything that happens after 12 a.m., that's going to be Norm's call. And as a coach, you really hope nothing happens after 12 a.m.”

Jeremy Case, who helped the Jayhawks win the 2008 national title, will be alongside Roberts on the bench. The Jayhawks also can use Joe Dooley, a longtime assistant and now director of student-athlete development, and Brady Morningstar, a former player who usually serves as the video coordinator, as fill-in coaches on game day.

Still, it's hard to substitute for a two-time national champion coach who's won more than 81% of his games at Kansas.

“Norm will do a great job. The guy has been a head coach in the Big East,” Self said. “We've been together a long time, and there's a correlation in us being successful and who your coaches are, and we've had the best staff. I don't know anybody can compare the staff we've had over time, and Norm has been a huge part of that.”

The suspensions, along with a series of recruiting penalties, were punishment for an infractions case that stems from a federal investigation in 2017 that led to the conviction of a shoe company executive, a middleman who worked with them and several assistant coaches. It involved Kansas along with Arizona, LSU, Louisville and North Carolina State.

When it came to the Jayhawks, the issue was whether representatives of apparel company Adidas were acting as boosters — the school contends they were not — when they arranged payments to prospective recruits. Kansas never disputed that the payments were made, only that it had any knowledge the inducements were happening.

The school asked that the case be decided by the Independent Accountability Resolution Process, which was created to handle particularly complex cases and acts outside the purview of the NCAA. But the soon-to-be disbanded panel has been painfully slow in its work, and it remains unclear when — or even if — there will ever be a conclusion.

“I don't understand all the nuances that go on,” Self said, “and to be real candid with you, if I don't understand it, it's hard for anyone else to understand it, because I'm right in the middle of it.”

Rather than wait out the process, Kansas imposed penalties last week in a gesture it hopes will mitigate any additional punishment. Self will sit out the next four games — an important developmental period for his young team — and put his trust in Roberts, who hasn't been a head coach since he was fired by St. John's in 2010.

The Bulldogs had their strongest support of the season after manhandling Tennessee in a 1-2 matchup. Georgia received 62 of 63 first-place votes from the media panel in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank. No. 2 Ohio State got the other first-place vote. Michigan moved up a spot to No. 3 and TCU jumped three spots to its highest ranking since late in the 2017 season. No. 5 Tennessee fell three spots after losing on the road to the defending national champions.

AP Top 25 Poll - K-State drops to No. 23

The season may not have ended the way the Great Bend volleyball team would have liked - a first-round loss in a tough sub-state that featured two teams ranked in Class 5A. But three players received all-Western Athletic Conference&nbsp; honors, and senior Valarie Luna was named WAC Player of the Year.

Luna led the Lady Panther attack this year with 196 kills, but it was her defense that earned her recognition. Her 100 blocks were second-highest in Class 5A, just five blocks from the classification lead. Along with her Player of the Year honor, Luna was also named to the all-WAC first team.

Senior Rylie Duvall also earned first-team honors. She was second on the team with 188 kills and also provided 128 digs. Junior Sadie Spray earned second-team honors after dishing out 683 assists. Spray was also second on the team with 65 blocks, third on the team with 220 digs, and third on the squad with 31 ace services.

Other WAC first-teamers include Liberal's Lizzy Cisneros and Rylie Hallman, Carly Lang from Hays, and Piper Harris from Garden City. All are seniors except the sophomore Harris. Liberal coach Katie Garcia was named WAC Coach of the Year.
