Scott Barlow got Christian Walker to hit into a game-ending groundout
with runners on second and third, and the Kansas City Royals beat the
Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 for just their second win in 11 games. Brady
Singer rebounded from three poor starts and the Royals tied their
season high with 14 hits. Every starter except Franmil Reyes had at
least one hit for the Royals. Kansas City is 6-18, including 5-6 on
the road but just 1-12 at Kauffman Stadium. Corbin Carroll was a home
run shy of the cycle for Arizona and stole two bases.

Blake Sabol hit a game-ending two-run homer in the ninth inning, and
the San Francisco Giants rallied past the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4.
With two outs and a runner on second, Sabol sent Ryan Helsley’s 1-2
offering over the wall in center field for his first career walk-off
homer. Helsley blew his third save of the year. San Francisco trailed
4-2 entering the ninth. Joc Pederson reached on a fielding error by
second baseman Tommy Edman, and Mike Yastrzemski followed with an RBI
double to bring the Giants within one. Sean Hjelle pitched a
scoreless ninth for the win. The Giants have won four straight.

Charlie Blackmon homered and drove in two runs, Brenton Doyle had his
first three major league hits and the Colorado Rockies beat the
Cleveland Guardians 5-1 on Tuesday night to clinch their first series
win this season. Blackmon hit his 40th leadoff homer on the second
pitch of the game and had an RBI double off Peyton Battenfield (0-2)
in a three-run second that built a 4-0 lead. He ranks ninth on the
career leadoff homer list, four behind Brady Anderson. Kris Bryant
singled Blackmon home, allowing him to tie Hall of Famer Larry Walker
for second in Rockies history with 892 runs.

streak with 21. The 1886 Detroit Wolverines had an 18-game stretch,

the game between the MLB-best Rays and the defending World Series

Commissioner Roger Goodell will step to the podium on Thursday on a
giant stage in front of Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, to
announce the No. 1 pick. It'll make it the ninth draft since it left
New York, and the event is becoming a major boon for the league,
teams and host cities. So far, the draft has been held in Chicago,
Philadelphia, Dallas, Nashville, Cleveland and Las Vegas. Detroit is
up in 2024. The Chiefs just celebrated another Super Bowl ring with a
parade, and will welcome even more fans to the draft and events being
held at Union Station and the National WWI Museum and Memorial.

— Carolina Panthers coach Frank Reich says he and general manager
Scott Fitterer have reached an agreement on which quarterback the
team will take with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. But Reich says
the team won’t say who that is until Thursday night, when the draft
begins. The Panthers are choosing between Alabama’s Bryce Young,
Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s
Anthony Richardson in an effort to upgrade a quarterback position
that has been in transition for the last five seasons. Fitterer said
last week he had waited to ask Reich who he preferred at No. 1 so
that nothing would cloud either decision maker’s judgement.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J.
(AP) — The Jets' deal to acquire Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay
Packers is a franchise-altering move that brings the four-time NFL
MVP to a team that has the league’s longest postseason drought at
12 years. General manager Joe Douglas called it an “honor” to
have a player of Rodgers’ caliber to want to play for the franchise
and credited the culture coach Robert Saleh has cultivated during his
two-plus seasons with the team. Douglas said there are still details
that need to be finalized before the deal is completed. But Douglas
said it is a "historic trade for this franchise.”

Lawmakers in Arkansas, Texas and elsewhere are working to remove
barriers between college athletes trying to cash in on their fame and
the schools for which they play. The latest legislative maneuvering
paves the way for schools and their fundraising arms to be directly
involved in securing and paying for their athletes’ name, image and
likeness deals. These amended laws are also trying to shield athletic
departments from NCAA enforcement. Meanwhile, college athletic
administrators are discovering the benefits of moving NIL activities
in-house.

in the final three minutes, but could never convert. Durant made a
layup to push Phoenix’s lead to 134-130 and then made two free
throws to put the Suns up six with 31.3 seconds left. The Suns play
the Denver Nuggets in the second round. Game 1 is on Saturday in
Denver.

DENVER (AP) — The
top-seeded Denver Nuggets eliminated the Minnesota Timberwolves with
a 112-109 win in Game 5 of their playoff series at Ball Arena on
Tuesday night. The Nuggets got a triple-double from Nikola Jokic and
35 points from Jamal Murray to hand Michael Malone his 25th playoff
win as Denver's head coach. That surpasses the 24 wins Doug Moe won
in the playoffs with the Nuggets. The Wolves were led by Anthony
Edwards' 29 points, but his 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have
sent the game into overtime hit the back of the iron.

BOSTON (AP) — Trae
Young had 38 points and drained a go-ahead 3-pointer from beyond the
top of the key with 2.8 seconds left to help the Atlanta Hawks cap a
late comeback and beat the Boston Celtics 119-117. The victory trims
Boston’s lead in the first-round playoff series to 3-2 and sends
the teams back to Atlanta for Game 6 on Thursday. John Collins added
22 points for Atlanta, who played without Dejounte Murray, who was
suspended for one game for bumping official Gediminas Petraitis with
his chest while walking off the court after the end of Game 4. Jaylen
Brown scored 35 points and Jayson Tatum added 19 for the Celtics, who
were outscored 37-25 in the fourth quarter.

Milwaukee Bucks, Memphis Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavaliers are hoping
there’s truly no place like home. The teams that earned home-court
advantage risk having their seasons end Wednesday night on their home
floors in the first round of the NBA playoffs. Only Sacramento is
guaranteed of playing on among the four Game 5s on tap Wednesday
night. Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said they just have to go home
and win a game. The Bucks are trying to avoid becoming the fourth No.
1 overall seed in the NBA playoffs since 1984 to go out in Round 1.
Memphis will lean on the NBA's best home record to stay alive against

The throwing group from the 3rd ranked Barton Community College men's track and field team dominated the competition this past weekend at the John Jacobs Invitational hosted by the University of Oklahoma.

The trio of Christopher Crawford, Brandon Lloyd, and Christopher Young earned a combined six Top-5 finishes in their events at the Jacobs Track Complex, making a pair of program impacts along the way.

In Friday's shot put, the Cougars went 3-4-5 in the event led by Crawford's personal best 18.02m (59-01.50) to better his program 8th furthest mark by four inches. Already in the sixth slot on the program list, Young finished fourth at 17.91m (58-09.25) with Lloyd, who has the program's fifth all-time throw, placed 5th in the competition at 16.54m (54-03.25).

On Saturday the trio made program impacts in taking the top three spots of the discus competition. Young earned the Jacobs title unleashing a personal best 56.47m (185-03) mark for a program 6th best ever throw. Lloyd, who set the program record last year at the same competition, finished runner-up on what would be a program seventh best throw of 55.88m (183-04) while Crawford, who has the third furthest throw in history, placed third on Saturday marking a 53.41m (175-02).

Young and Crawford also competed in the Friday's hammer throw, 13th Young placing 13th on a 50.37m (165-03) throw with Crawford in 15th on a personal best 47.78m (156-09), coming up just shy of national qualifying standards.

Despite the less than ideal weather conditions, on the track Barton was nearly as dominant in the short distances, including a pair of runner-up placings.

A mere .008 seconds provided the difference in the 100m leaving Almond Small's 10.489 in the runner-up position. Aaron Charles placed 5th at 10.67, Malachi Carter in 11th at 10.94, Marlon Wordlow's personal fastest 11.04 coming in 14th, and Noah Kincade's 11.47 edging out Jaden Wiley's personal best by .002 seconds for the 23rd position.

The Cougars also had good showing in the 110m Hurdles led by Devoy Pinnock runner-up 14.59 time with Jalen McGee (14.71) and Jeramiah Martin (14.83) crossing in the 4th and 5th placing. Clocking new personal bests, Jayden Singleton's 15.18 and Carlos Bell's 15.89 placed 10th and 14th respectively.

Revon Williams, who placed 5th in the 400m (48.74) joined forces with Martin, Small, and Charles in finishing 2nd in the 4x100m relay at 40.59.

Barton stays in-state for its next meet competing April 29nd in Lawrence at the Rock Chalk Classic hosted by the University of Kansas.

After the Lady Redskins scored five runs in the fourth and fifth innings of Monday's single varsity softball game against Great Bend, the drive was looking a little longer. The Lady Panthers answered with a run in the sixth, and freshman Katherine Mazouch doubled and circled the bases as part of a five-run seventh to steal an 8-7 win. Great Bend moves to 7-6 on the season.

That single run in the sixth proved to be a big one. Mazouch came up big late with a two-out single in that frame. She came around to score on a double from Kamryn Koelsch.

Paige Thexton opened the seventh with a single. She was thrown out on a fielder's choice off the bat of Rylee Prilling, but that allowed Prilling to stay on the basepath. She came around to score on an RBI-groundout from Analiz Rivas. DeShawnna Bryant and Rylie Duvall followed with singles, then Denver Ringo was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. That's when Mazouch cleared the bases with a hit to center field and a pair of errors for an 8-6 Lady Panther lead.

Liberal threatened in its final at bat, scoring on a passed ball to get within one before Braelyn Turner provided the final strikeout of the game with the tying run still at third base.

Mazouch and Bryant each provided three hits in the win. Mazouch had the double, driving in four and scoring once. Bryant tripled and scored twice. Thexton singled and doubled with an RBI.

Thexton pitched the first three innings, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out two. The Panthers led 2-1 when she left the game. McCauley pitched into the seventh inning, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with a strikeout in her 3.2 innings of work. Turner recorded the final out.&nbsp;

The Lady Panthers are scheduled for single JV and varsity games against Garden City Tuesday, weather permitting.

The nation's 2nd ranked Barton Community College women's track and field team competed this past weekend in less than ideal weather conditions at the John Jacobs Invitational hosted by the University of Oklahoma in Norman.

Although not reaching the national berth time, Karina Herrera withstood the conditions to post her second straight improvement in the 1500m by clocking a personal best 5:35.28 in finishing 26th in the event.

Impending weather affects Barton Baseball and Softball schedules

PHOENIX (AP) — Nick Ahmed took a healthy swing in the eighth inning, but was a little off on his timing. The ball squirted off the end of his bat, rolling slowly up the first base line.

That gave Christian Walker time to sprint home with the decisive run for Arizona.

It was far from a classic, but these are the kind of games the Diamondbacks have lost for years. Now a few of them — including Monday night's 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals — are starting to go their way.

“We're not going to score 10 every game or throw a no-hitter,” Walker said. “So to win these tweeners, where we feel we have a chance to win, but it's a matter of executing and holding them off one more inning, for me, these are the games when you look back and you're proud of the season, these are the wins that need to happen.”

Ahmed — who was pinch-hitting — brought home Walker with his one-out roller off reliever Aroldis Chapman (0-1) that was essentially a swinging bunt. First baseman Vinnie Pasquantino tried to get Walker at home, but the throw was late.

“That ball — you can’t plan for that,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “I thought Vinnie made a nice attempt.”

The NL West-leading D-backs improved to 13-11. The Royals have lost nine of their last 10 and fell to 5-18.

Arizona lefty Andrew Chafin (2-0) got the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out Salvador Perez and Franmil Reyes to end the game. The veteran reliever threw 35 pitches, a long outing by his standards.

“The adrenaline of the game is going to help push through any issues,” Chafin said. “Just taking it one pitch at a time and doing everything I can to get the job done.”

Edward Olivares hit a solo homer in the first to give the Royals an early lead, but the Diamondbacks built a 4-2 advantage by the fourth, scoring two runs in both the second and third off Kansas City starter Brad Keller.

Keller struggled to throw strikes, giving up four runs in four innings on four hits and six walks. He threw 95 pitches.

“He just didn't have his normal command,” Quatraro said.

Arizona's Tommy Henry threw 4 1/3 innings in his first start of the season, giving up three runs on four hits and four walks. The left-hander was called up from Triple-A to take the rotation spot of four-time All-Star Madison Bumgarner, who was designated for assignment last week.

The Royals cut the D-backs' lead to 4-3 in the fifth on Perez's RBI double and then tied the game in the eighth on Kyle Isbel's RBI single. Pasquantino had a three-hit night while Michael Massey and Perez both had two hits.

Arizona's Geraldo Perdomo and Pavin Smith also had two hits.

Royals: Reyes was reinstated from the paternity list. INF Nate Eaton was sent to Triple-A Omaha.

Diamondbacks: To make room for Henry on the roster, RHP Drey Jameson was optioned to Triple-A Reno. ... Walker was out of the starting lineup for a second straight game after getting hit by a pitch on the left forearm Saturday. He pinch-hit in the eighth and walked.

The three-game series continues Tuesday. The Royals will send RHP Brady Singer (1-2, 8.14 ERA) to the mound against RHP Ryne Nelson (1-0, 4.91).

scattered six hits and struck out four in his fifth career complete
game and first since 2018 with Baltimore. His only other major league
shutout was a four-hitter for Tampa Bay against Oakland in August
2012. It was the third complete game in the majors this season.
Yankees ace Gerrit Cole and Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara each
tossed a shutout against Minnesota this month. Cobb walked one and
threw 70 of his 109 pitches for strikes as San Francisco won its
third straight game.

Austin Gomber bounced back from a hideous start to get his first win,
Jurickson Profar drove in three runs and the Colorado Rockies won for
just the second time in 13 games, beating the Cleveland Guardians 6-0
on Monday night. Gomber (1-4) held the Guardians to three singles —
all by Steven Kwan — in five scoreless innings. The left-hander was
pounded for nine runs and nine hits in just two innings in a loss to
Pittsburgh on April 19.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
(AP) — Rookie Taj Bradley won his third consecutive start to begin
his big league career and the Tampa Bay Rays set a modern era MLB
record with their 14th consecutive home win to begin a season, 8-3
over the Houston Astros. Tampa Bay had shared the mark dating to 1901
with the 2009 Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rays are 20-3 overall. Only
the 1911 Detroit Tigers and 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers had better starts
at 21-2 since 1901. Bradley allowed three runs and four hits with six
strikeouts and no walks in five innings. Alex Bregman and Jeremy Peña
homered for the Astros.

for the Buffaloes, which was highlighted by his 98-yard touchdown. A
day later, Lemonious-Craig decided to depart the program that Coach

the others to announce on social media they will enter the portal are

Monday on Sports Day (Watch)

Sending seven to the Region VI title matches, the 7th ranked Barton Community College men's tennis team finished runner-up Saturday at the two-day Region VI Championships held at Great Bend's Schartz Tennis Courts in Veteran's Memorial Park.

The Cougars accumulated 8 points to finish ahead of 6th ranked Pratt's 5 points to avenge the Beavers' regular season 5-4 win over Barton. Top-ranked Cowley College swept all nine events in claiming its second consecutive region crown with short-handed 15th-ranked Seward County rounding out the four-team region with .5 points.

Cowley earned their title sweeping most of their matches in dominating fashion, the exceptions coming in a pair of matchups with the Cougars in being pushed on the scoreboard.

<a href="https://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mten/2022-23/bios/kalaba_barnabas_nhqi">Barnabas Kalaba</a>&nbsp;registered the lone three-set match score against the Tigers, taking the first set 6-4 over Hanamichi Carvajal but the nation's 19th-ranked player responded with 6-2, 6-1 set wins for the No. 4 flight victory. Seeded second in the flight, Kalaba had to survive his own three-set threat in Friday's action versus Pratt's Vitor Goncalves, winning the first set 6-3 but dropping the second 3-6 before advancing to the finals with another 6-3 set win.

In the top flight of singles play, 15th-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mten/2022-23/bios/campos_gustavo_oua2">Gustavo Campos</a>&nbsp;rolled in Friday's action 6-1, 6-2 over Pratt's 33rd-ranked Dante Despontin setting up a Saturday tangle with the nation's top player Takeshi Taco. Falling 8-6 in the first set tiebreak, Campos had serve at 5-5 in the second but Taco held strong in winning the next two games for a 7-5 title sweep.

The 6th-ranked Barton Community College women's tennis team placed third Saturday at the two-day Region VI Championships held at Great Bend's Schartz Tennis Courts in Veteran's Memorial Park.

The nation's second-ranked Cowley Tiger squad won six of the nine events in capturing the team title with 15 points while 25th-ranked Pratt was shutout in the point-earning system.

Tsiang's title highlights Region VI tennis tourney for No. 6 Barton

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes made a bold promise to Chiefs president Mark Donovan at one point last season, knowing full well that the NFL draft would be coming to Kansas City for the first time the last weekend in April.

“I was going to make sure they say ‘World Champion Kansas City Chiefs’ whenever they announce our pick,” Mahomes said, “and I held my word to that, and I don’t know it’s ever been able to be said in the host city.”

Get ready for what could be a long party next Thursday night at Union Station.

The same place where the Chiefs ended their Super Bowl victory parade in February is the site of the draft, and the Chiefs are picking last in the first round after winning their third Lombardi Trophy. So unless they trade up — always possible given their aggressive general manager, Brett Veach — the Chiefs won't be on the clock until the sun has long set.

It remains to be seen who will be left with a first-round grade from Veach by that point.

Or even what position the Chiefs will attack.

The Chiefs need help at offensive tackle and wide receiver, two positions that were hit hard by departures in free agency.

“I think when you have the GM blue book it kind of says, ‘Smart in free agency and build through the draft,’ Veach said, “and I think I’ve learned over the years as you have more and more success that becomes more difficult.”

In free agency, players cost more. In the draft, the Chiefs tend to pick near the end of each round.

Yet they struck it rich in last year's draft. Defensive back Trent McDuffie and defensive end George Karlaftis, both first-round picks, became linchpins of the defense alongside cornerbacks Josh Williams and Jaylen Watson. Second-round pick Skyy Moore had a crucial punt return in the Super Bowl, while seventh-round pick Isiah Pacheco led the Chiefs in rushing.

"We really had to slam dunk this thing from start to finish," Veach said, “and it was one of those years a GM dreams of.”

Who are the Chiefs dreaming about this year with 10 picks overall?

If they address the offensive line with the No. 31 pick, Ohio State's Dawand Jones and Oklahoma's Anton Harrison are possibilities. The Chiefs have done plenty of work on Boston College wide receiver Zay Flowers if they go that route. And pass rushers such as Kansas State's Felix Anudike-Uzomah and Notre Dame's Isaiah Foskey could be available there.

“We always try to stick to best available. It's probably a cookie-cutter line all GMs use,” Veach said, before acknowledging: “It does become difficult sometimes when you have certain position groups that are really deep, because you do think, ‘Maybe he’s a little higher in value but there’s depth in that position, so maybe you can get something similar.’ So, it’s just working the board and really trusting your guys at the end of the day.”

The teams combined for just eight hits in the opener with the Cougars being shutout for the first time since the 2021 when they fell to Butler Community College 6-0. In the nightcap the offensive woes lingered with Barton unable to produce the key hit stranding 13 runners and leaving the bases loaded in the seventh and ninth.

Despite dropping their first doubleheader and settling their first series split of the season, the Cougars remain atop the Jayhawk West standings with a mark of 19-5 and overall record of 40-7 while the victories keep the T-Birds in a fourth place tie in league play at 15-9 and 30-17 overall.

5th ranked Barton Baseball drops road doubleheader to Cloud County

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Taylor Ward, Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani hit consecutive homers in the sixth inning, and the Los Angeles Angels hung on for a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

Trout also had two doubles for the Angels, who managed only one hit in the first five innings against Jordan Lyles (0-4) before the heart of their order unloaded on the Kansas City starter during a nine-pitch span.

Ward’s drive into the short left-field porch was followed by Trout’s fifth homer of the year and Ohtani’s 415-foot blast to center for his own fifth homer. Los Angeles hadn’t hit back-to-back-to-back homers since June 8, 2019.

“It was good to see some quality at-bats, and obviously Shohei hitting a homer,” Trout said. “We gave Hunter Renfroe a little stuff because he couldn’t hit a homer (after the three straight). No, it’s all fun to get a good pitch to hit and put the barrel on it.”

Ohtani had two hits and two RBIs, and Ward scored two runs in the Angels’ second victory in five games. All three home-run hitters appeared to be revitalized after recent tough stretches on offense.

“We look at (Trout and Ohtani) like they’re Superman, and they’re human,” Angels manager Phil Nevin said. “They get tired. The last two nights, that’s the Mike we know. His bat has been flying through the zone.”

MJ Melendez, Vinnie Pasquantino and Bobby Witt Jr. connected for the Royals, who opened their 10-game trip by losing two of three in Anaheim. Kansas City has lost eight of nine and 11 of 13.

Lyles yielded four hits over six innings with five strikeouts.

“I know at least two of (the Angels’ homers) were off-speed pitches, and two of them were also two-strike pitches, so you give them credit,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “They put good swings on pitches when they were behind in the count. Those are three really good hitters, and Jordan did a heck of a job limiting the damage over six innings. You’re facing three of the best hitters in the game there, and that’s what they do.”

Reid Detmers yielded seven hits while pitching into the sixth for the Angels. Austin Warren (1-0) gave up Witt’s homer in the seventh during his second appearance of the season, and Carlos Estévez got his third save with a six-pitch ninth inning.

Melendez homered in the first, but Ward scored on Ohtani’s flyout later in the inning after advancing on Trout’s double.

Pasquantino delivered his fourth homer in the top of the sixth before the Angels’ barrage.

Ward had been in a 2-for-27 skid before his homer. He didn’t start Saturday night for the first time this season.

“It was a pretty cool moment, and definitely a difference-maker,” Ward said. “Definitely boosts your confidence a little bit.”

(AP) — Taylor Ward, Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani hit consecutive homers in the sixth inning, and the Los Angeles Angels hung on for a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.Trout also had two doubles for the Angels, who managed only one hit in the first five innings against Jordan Lyles (0-4) before the heart of their order unloaded on the Kansas City starter during a nine-pitch span.Ward’s drive into the short left-field porch was followed by Trout’s fifth homer of the year and Ohtani’s 415-foot blast to center for his own fifth homer. Los Angeles hadn’t hit back-to-back-to-back homers since June 8, 2019.“It was good to see some quality at-bats, and obviously Shohei hitting a homer,” Trout said. “We gave Hunter Renfroe a little stuff because he couldn’t hit a homer (after the three straight). No, it’s all fun to get a good pitch to hit and put the barrel on it.”Ohtani had two hits and two RBIs, and Ward scored two runs in the Angels’ second victory in five games. Back-to-back-to-back homers too much for Royals

Big things continue to happen for the Lady Panther swim team. Great Bend placed third out of 11 teams in action Friday in Salina, but a new school record was set in the 200 medley relay, and two more state qualifying times were reached.

The 200-yard medley team of Emilee Hall, Clarise Snapp, Elly Somers, and Josephine Mazouch qualified for state in the first meet of the season and came up three seconds shy of the GBHS record. The girls finished third in Friday's race, but their time of 2:00.81 broke the school record of 2:00.92 set in 2016.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team was flirting with a state qualification time in recent meets. Friday, the team of Mazouch, Somers, Hall, and Kamryn Johns finished third in 4:04.08 to miss the silver by five seconds, but qualify for state by seven seconds.

Somers finished second in the 200-yard IM in 2:30.52. She missed the gold by 12 seconds but qualified for state by 1.08 seconds. Ally Howard swam seventh in the race in 2:50.08. Somers also swam a state consideration time in the 100-yard butterfly with a fifth-place finish in 1:09.17. The qualification time is 1:07.61, and the race featured four state qualifiers.

Hall came in two seconds under state qualification time in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing second in 1:05.71 to miss the gold by four seconds. Hall and Mazouch swam second and third, respectively, behind a state qualifier in the 50-yard freestyle. Hall's time of 27.26, and Mazouch's time of 27.30, come up just shy of the qualification time of 26.83 but are both consideration times. Mazouch missed state qualification in the 100-yard free by just 0.37 seconds with the silver medal in 59.81.

Snapp picked up the lone Panther gold on the day in the 100-yard breast, winning by a quarter of a second in 1:19.61. She easily beat the state consideration time and is less than two seconds from the qualifying mark.

Freshman Braylee Carper finished seventh in the 200-yard free in 2:23.61 to miss the bronze by 10 seconds. That race featured two state qualifiers. The 200-yard free relay team of Snapp, Sydney Kruckenberg, Ellie Lutt, and Alyvia Mingenback placed seventh in 2:05.82 to miss the bronze by seven seconds.

Lady Panther relay team breaks school record in Salina

Collegiate bowlers do it a little differently. Not under the banner of the NCAA, the national championships are instead handed out through the Intercollegiate Singles Championships (ISC) that feature the top 24 male and female bowlers from across the country. Great Bend's Paige Wagner, now a freshman at Wichita State University, was part of that field this weekend in Las Vegas. Saturday evening, she won the national title. The championship will be nationally televised on a delayed broadcast Tuesday, April 25 on CBS Sports.

All 24 competitors bowled six games to determine seeding. Wagner bowled well enough to earn the No. 8 seed and a first-round bye in the championship bracket, which she opened with a&nbsp;709-534 win against the No. 24 seed. Wagner would have faced the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals, but that bowler was defeated in her first series. Wagner capitalized, taking down the No. 16 seed 668-603.

The format changed to single games for the semifinals and championship matches. Wagner escaped the No. 12 seed in the semifinals 235-226, then defeated the No. 14 seed 211-203 for the national title.

This year's championships were held at the USBC Bowling Plaza at South Point Hotel, Casino &amp; Spa in Las Vegas. Wagner was a two-time regional champion and state runner-up for Great Bend. Her 289 single game at state her junior year is the single-high record at GBHS.

Great Bend's Wagner wins collegiate bowling national title

A few individual golds were not enough to push the Panther track and field team to the top of the standings Friday in Buhler. Hutchinson and Buhler dominated the meet with 114 and 107 points, respectively. Great bend scored 79 points to finish a single point behind Andover Central in fifth.

Senior Kaiden Esfeld ran 10 seconds off his recent school-record time but still won the 1600m run by three seconds in 4:30.34. Esfeld led 5A in that event heading into Friday, and ranked No. 5 in the 5A 800m run. He just missed his season best there Friday but still won by three seconds in 2:00.64.

Senior Madison Regehr had the better hurdle times entering the meet, but Andover Central's Landon Kitterman won the 110s in 15.37, followed by Regehr in 15.52 for the silver. Buhler senior Myles Frederick needed his best 300m time of the season to beat Regehr by just 0.04 seconds in 40.64. Regehr still ranks No. 3 in Class 5A.

Senior Cayden Scheuerman made the 100m dash finals against tough competition. He finished seventh in 11.40 to miss the bronze by a quarter of a second. He moved up to fourth in the 200m dash in 23.49, just 0.09 seconds behind the bronze.

Senior Skyler McMullen added a foot to his season best in the pole vault at 11-0 but still finished seventh in a tough field. Maddox Spray cleared 5-6 in the high jump for sixth.

Senior Mathew Moeder finished second in the javelin on a throw of 158-5 to miss the gold by nearly six feet. Junior Matthew Johnson placed fifth at 144-10, easily his best throw of the season. Moeder placed third in the shot on a toss of 43-1 to miss the silver by more than four feet. Hutchinson took the top-three spots in the discus, led by a throw of 132-8. Panther senior Danny Nieto placed sixth at 118-6.

Dodge City and Great Bend 4x400 relay teams were separated by just 0.31 seconds Friday. Great Bend won the silver in 3:29.53, the No. 6 time in 5A. The Panther 4x800 team posted its best time of the season to place fourth in 8:31.79. Great Bend ranks No. 12 in 5A. The 4x100 team ranks No. 16 in 5A and just missed its best time of the season to place fourth in 44.66.

Great Bend boys finish fifth at Buhler track meet

Even with some tough competition, the Great Bend girls were able to dominate Friday's track invitational in Buhler. The Lady Panthers used a team effort to score 151 points. The host Crusaders finished second with 98 points.

Great Bend took the top-three spots in the high jump. Valarie Luna won the gold at 5-4, followed by Cassie Ellegood at a career-best 5-2, and Sadie Spray at 5-0 for the bronze.

The 800m runners also had a big day with the medal sweep. Eliana Beckham posted the fifth-fastest 5A time with the win in 2:23.78. Freshman Sienna Smith followed in 2:32.47 for the silver, and Ellegood held on by a third of a second in 2:34.22 for the bronze.

Junior Addy Nicholson ran her best mile time of the season last Friday at home. In Buhler, she shed several seconds from that time for the silver in 5:26.21, four seconds from the win. Nicholson moves to No. 9 in 5A. Nicholson posted the No. 7 5A time in the 3200m run for the win by 12 seconds in 12:01.23. Marissa Boone ran fifth in 12:30.54.

Hutchinson senior Annalissa Cullens posted the seventh-fastest 100m hurdle time ever in Kansas to win in 14.05. Panther junior Makenzie Premer ran fifth in 16.81, and senior Hailey Peterson finished seventh in 17.62. Cullens also ran her best 300m hurdle time of the season to lead the state in 45.15. Spray picked up the silver in 47.17, followed by Premer in third in 47.79. Peterson ran her best time of the season to place eighth in 50.97. Premer and Spray rank No. 2 and 3, respectively, in 5A this spring.

Cullens was also a factor in the 100m dash, winning in 12.45. Luna finished second in 12.79, barely missing her No. 15 time in 5A this spring. Sophomore Kara Feist finished second in the 200m dash in 27.86 to miss the gold by three-quarters of a second. Daizy Gomez ran her best 400m time of the season for the bronze in 64.59 to miss the silver by two seconds.

Freshman Kimberly Hofflinger placed third in the discus on a throw of 111-8 to miss the silver by more than four feet. Rylie Duvall finished behind her at 110-1 for fourth. Freshman Allie Gerhart led the shot put throwers in eighth with a throw of 32-3, just an inch out of seventh. Kyndall Blessing placed ninth at 30-10.

Great Bend's relay teams continue to do well. The 4x400 team ran four seconds off its 5A-best time but won by eight seconds in 4:13.22. The 4x800 squad ran well off its No. 6 time in 5A, but still won the race Friday by eight seconds in 10:23.06. The 4x100 team placed fourth in 51.93 to miss the bronze by nearly half a second.

Back in the field, Blessing won the javelin bronze on a throw of 115-4. Macy Nachtigal placed fifth at 110-0. Katie Kuhlman saw some tough competition in the pole vault where she placed seventh at 8-0. Andover Central senior Reagan Housley took the 5A lead by three inches with the win at 11-10.

Lady Panthers dominate Buhler track invite

The trek west proved to be worth it Friday for the Panther baseball team. Following a pair of impressive wins against Class 4A teams McPherson and Rose Hill on Tuesday, Great Bend opened Friday's doubleheader against Garden City with a 17-4 win, then closed out the Buffaloes 4-3 in the late game.&nbsp;

Despite the score, Garden City actually led most of the game in game one. Great Bend struck first in the second inning, but the Buffs plated three runs in the second and led 4-3 heading into the sixth. That's when the Panthers opened up the bats for a 14-run frame.

Panther pitching was solid all game with just two hits allowed. Hunter Herrman pitched the first 3.1 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three. Only one of his four runs were earned. Tyler Stuhlsatz allowed one hit and an unearned run with a pair of strikeouts in the final 2.2 innings.

Great Bend piled up 16 hits in the win. Carson Umphres tripled, singled twice, and walked, driving in a run and scoring three times. Stuhlsatz singled three times, and Ian Premer tripled and singled to finish with four RBIs and a pair of runs. Edwin Chavez and Bradley Hopkins each doubled and singled, and Chavez drove in four and scored twice. Hopkins also walked twice. Trenton Kern singled twice and accounted for four runs.
