Georgia received 62 of 63 first-place votes from the media panel in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank. No. 2 Ohio State got the other first-place vote. Michigan moved up a spot to No. 3 and TCU jumped three spots to its highest ranking since late in the 2017 season. AP Top 25 Poll - K-State drops to No. 23

The season may not have ended the way the Great Bend volleyball team would have liked - a first-round loss in a tough sub-state that featured two teams ranked in Class 5A. But three players received all-Western Athletic Conference&nbsp; honors, and senior Valarie Luna was named WAC Player of the Year.

Luna led the Lady Panther attack this year with 196 kills, but it was her defense that earned her recognition. Her 100 blocks were second-highest in Class 5A, just five blocks from the classification lead. Along with her Player of the Year honor, Luna was also named to the all-WAC first team.

Senior Rylie Duvall also earned first-team honors. She was second on the team with 188 kills and also provided 128 digs. Junior Sadie Spray earned second-team honors after dishing out 683 assists. Spray was also second on the team with 65 blocks, third on the team with 220 digs, and third on the squad with 31 ace services.

Other WAC first-teamers include Liberal's Lizzy Cisneros and Rylie Hallman, Carly Lang from Hays, and Piper Harris from Garden City. All are seniors except the sophomore Harris. Liberal coach Katie Garcia was named WAC Coach of the Year.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Two weeks ago, Texas let a game against Oklahoma State slip away in the fourth quarter.

The Longhorns weren't about to let it happen again.

After riding Bijan Robinson to a 31-10 halftime lead at Kansas State, then watching the No. 13 Wildcats come roaring back down the stretch, the Longhorns' defense stepped up one last time. Keondre Coburn stripped Adrian Martinez near midfield with 34 seconds to go, Jaylan Ford pounced on the loose ball and Texas escaped with a 34-27 victory Saturday night.

“We just understood that we're not going to lose again on the road. That's when the fight came out,” said Robinson, who ran for 209 yards and a score. “The defense came up clutch. They understood that they had to put the game on their backs and they had to stop them and execute and that's what they did.”

Quinn Ewers threw for 197 yards with two TD passes to Xavier Worthy, and Roschon Johnson added a TD run for the Longhorns (6-3, 4-2 Big 12), who control their own destiny in the race for the Big 12 title game.

They begin a three-game finishing gauntlet against No. 7 TCU next week before games against Kansas and Baylor.

“I told the guys, ‘We're not done. We have more work,'” Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian said. “We have a great opportunity ahead of us in this entire month of November. What you do in November is what everybody remembers.”

Martinez threw for 329 yards and two TDs, but he also threw an interception that turned into a Texas touchdown and had the fumble the clinched the game. Deuce Vaughn had 73 yards rushing along with 86 yards and a touchdown receiving.

"The guys stayed in the fight," said Wildcats coach Chris Klieman, whose team hasn't beaten Texas since 2016. “When you are down that big at halftime, a lot of things can go wrong. It's a credit to the character and leadership in that room.”

The momentum swung to Texas on the fourth play of the game, when Kansas State's Julius Brents earned a questionable targeting penalty, taking the Wildcats' best cover cornerback off the field for the rest of the game.

The Longhorns proceeded to reel off three straight touchdown drives, all going eight plays and 75 yards. Robinson capped the first with a 36-yard run, Johnson finished the second from nine yards out, and Worthy capitalized on Brents' absence by hauling in the first of his two TDs to give the Longhorns a 21-10 lead.

The only time Kansas State (6-3, 4-2) got off the field came when Johnson fumbled at the end of a 37-yard gain. But the Wildcats promptly punted away, Texas added a field goal, and then Martinez was picked off in the closing minutes to set up Worthy's second touchdown reception and extend the lead to 31-10 at the break.

The Longhorns had 352 yards of offense by that point against a Kansas State defense that limited Oklahoma State to 217 total in a 48-0 win last week. Robinson had bullied his way for 161 on the ground, the best half of his career.

“Bijan Robinson, period,” Klieman said. “I think he's one of the best running backs in college football for a reason.”

Kansas State mounted a second-half comeback, and it was that struggling defense that jump-started it. Josh Hayes popped another fumble loose and, after a series of penalties, Martinez scored from a yard out to make it 31-17.

Martinez then hit Kade Warner from 25 yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it a touchdown game.

Texas and Kansas State promptly traded field goals, but the Wildcats' kick came after a time-consuming drive that drained more than 6 minutes off the clock. It got them within 34-27 but with just 4:26 left in the game.

The Wildcats stuffed Robinson on third down to get the ball back, and Martinez quickly moved them to midfield. But after converting fourth down with a pass to Vaughn with 34 seconds to go, the senior quarterback — getting the start over Will Howard, who had been dynamic last week against the Cowboys — fumbled the ball away.

“We had a chance to win it in the fourth quarter,” Klieman said. “We just made too many mistakes.”

Texas lost a pair of fumbles and failed to convert on fourth down, but otherwise the offense was nearly unstoppable in the first half. In the second, the Longhorns managed to make just enough to plays to keep Kansas State at bay.

Kansas State made far too many mistakes, beginning with the Brents penalty and personal fouls on center Hayden Gillum and linebacker Daniel Green. The Wildcats finished with nine penalties for 85 yards in an uncharacteristic performance by one of the better disciplined teams in the Big 12.

The Longhorns plays No. 7 TCU next Saturday night.

The Wildcats head to Baylor the same night.

Robinson stars as Texas holds off No. 13 K-State, 34-27

Saturday the 15th ranked Barton Community College women's soccer punched the program's first national tournament bid by advancing 5-4 in a shootout over 4th ranked Butler Community College

Winning the program's first Region VI and Plains District title, next up is a trip to Evans, Georgia, for the NJCAA Division I National Tournament held November 13-19.  The Cougars, now 16-3-2, will most likely be joined by Butler at the tournament in an at-large berth as the high ranking Grizzlies now stands at 18-2-2.

On a cold and breezy night at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, the West Champion Cougars and the East Champion Grizzlies went toe-to-toe throughout the evening, each scoring a goal in the two halves to force extra time.

Barton controlled most of the first golden goal including a pair of near misses but true to the evening's battle, Butler assumed most of the advantage in the second period in also just missing the space between the pipes.

The 110 minutes of gridlock sent the teams to the PK line with the top seeded Grizzlies having first opportunity.

Nia Baker picked up where she left from Thursday's Barton shootout advancement in the semifinals, rejecting the Grizzlies' Kim McAlpine with Nina Norshie, who put the Cougars up 2-1 in second half action, netted Barton's first tally.

Madeline Boman opened up round two with a score and was followed by net tender Kyrah Klumpp giving Butler even more inspiration. Rejecting not one but two of Ivanna Faria's shots after having to redo the first save due to leaving her line early, Klumpp redeemed herself coming up with an equally great save to the opposite post.

In round three the Grizzlies' Brooklyn Hunter put the Grizzlies up again but Aya Saiki answered on her attempt closing out the three rounds at 2 apiece.

Round four produced dual net shakers, Kenzee Godwin for the Grizzlies with Rin Sato connecting for the women in blue for the lead.

Tied into the final round, Brooke Sullivan's attempt sailed high of the crossbar leaving one more net shaker for Barton's advancement.  Natalia Baltodano was next up in the fifth spot of the lineup, calmly getting into position before striking and finding the twine with the concluding tally sending the program to nationals for the first time in history.

Barton got on the board first in the 17th minute of the contest as Faria settled Norshie's pass just inside the eight to strike near post past a sprawling Klumpp for her 7th of the season.

Twelve minutes later the Grizzlies produced the equalizer from the back side of the eight with Yossi Villagrana putting away Joy Ngibuini's cross.

Butler held a slight first half shot advantage at 5-4 with each team sending two shots between the pipes.

Fifteen minutes into the second frame, Norshie provided a highlight chip shot over Klumpp from 15-yards out, racing past the Butler defense to finish off Saiki's dump into the eighteen for her 43rd of the year.

Nine minutes later the nation's leading scorer nearly gave the Cougars a two-goal cushion on a near identical play from the opposite side of the box but the left footed shot sailed the crossbar.

A well executed play helped the Grizzlies tie it up six minutes later as Hunter's pin-point through ball reached Godwin breaking into the eighteen to beat Baker 1v1 to far post with 21:09 remaining.

Final statistics had the teams as close as the battle on the field, Butler leading 12-11 in shots with each goalie coming up with four saves.

Barton women claim program's first district title in shootout fashion

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Devin Neal ran for 224 yards and a touchdown and had 110 receiving yards, leading Kansas past No. 18 Oklahoma State 37-16 on Saturday.

The Jayhawks (6-3, 3-3 Big 12 Conference) are bowl eligible for the first time since 2008 when they beat Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl.

“I'm really proud of our guys and our staff,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “To be able to do something like this is pretty special.”

Kansas’ ground game led the way with 351 yards as a team with Neal setting career highs in both rushing and receiving yards against the Cowboys (6-3, 3-3).

“That's what makes it more special,” Neal said about growing up in Lawrence just a few miles away from the stadium. “When I did commit there was a lot of people that asked me why I would waste my career there.

"Looking back now, to be able to do what we've done it's pretty special. It just means a lot more to me especially just because I grew up here just two miles way from campus.”

Jason Bean was efficient in the air, too. He went 18-for-23 passing for 203 yards with two touchdowns while rushing for a 72-yard touchdown.

Neal and Bean combined for 237 yards on the ground in the first half with two touchdowns. Bean gained 93 yards on four carries while Neal had six catches.

“The performance of Devin Neal was just outstanding,” Leipold said. "We had talked about how we needed him to have one of those games, and he answered that. "

Kansas benefited from Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders not playing, with freshman Garrett Rangel throwing interceptions on the Cowboys' first two drives. Rangel went 27 of 40 for 304 yards and two touchdowns.

Bryan Green had nine catches for 105 yards for Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma State had four turnovers, which resulted in 14 points for Kansas.

“Obviously turnovers made it difficult for us today,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. “We have to be able to defend the rush on defense and keep working on trying to run the ball a little better on offense.”

The Cowboys scored a touchdown with 10 minutes left in the second quarter, their first points in 83 game minutes spanning over their last three. It was an 8-yard touchdown pass by Rangel to Stephon Johnson.

Oklahoma State: Without Sanders, the Cowboys offense struggled. They were outscored by a combined 85-16 by Kansas State and Kansas in their last two games.

Kansas: Now being bowl eligible, the pressure is off this team that won their first five games. If the Jayhawks win out and get some help, they could find themselves in the Big 12 Championship game.

Oklahoma State heads home to host Iowa State on Saturday.

Kansas travels to Texas Tech on Saturday.

Dekkers, who finished 24-of-36 passing for 219 yards, engineered an 8-play, 94-yard drive that helped Iowa State seize control early in the fourth quarter. Virginia hasn’t won an NCAA Tournament game since its 2019 national title and failed to even make the field last season.

The return of five starters should enable the Cavaliers to change that trend.

“This probably is the oldest team maybe that I’ve had,” coach Tony Bennett said as he enters his 14th season at Virginia.

Virginia is 18th in the Associated Press preseason Top 25, making the Cavaliers the highest-ranked team that isn’t coming off an NCAA Tournament berth.

The Cavaliers went 21-14 and reached the NIT quarterfinals last season. That followed a 2020-21 season in which Virginia earned a No. 4 seed in its region but lost to Ohio in the opening round of the tournament.

Virginia has the pieces in place to make a deeper run this season.

The Cavaliers return three double-digit scorers from last season in preseason second-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection Jayden Gardner (15.3), Armaan Franklin (11.1) and Kihei Clark (10.0). Clark and Gardner are graduate students, while Franklin is a senior.

Virginia also brought in Ohio transfer Ben Vander Plas, who had 14.2 points and 6.8 rebounds for his former school last season. Vander Plas scored 17 points in Ohio’s NCAA Tournament upset of Virginia two seasons ago.

“Last year our depth wasn’t great and we probably didn’t shoot the ball at the level we needed to, so we tried to improve in those areas,” Bennett said. “But experience is golden, I think, in college basketball. And we have that.”

Some other programs that have reason to believe they can get back into the NCAA Tournament in March after failing to make it last season:

2021-22 record: 24-11 (14-4 Atlantic 10); NIT second round

Notes: Dayton is ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 for just the third time in program history. The Flyers return all five starters, including 2022 Atlantic 10 rookie of the year DaRon Holmes II. Dayton failed to reach the NCAA Tournament despite beating eventual national champion Kansas during the year.

Florida State had advanced to at least the Sweet 16 in three straight NCAA Tournaments before struggling through a disappointing 2021-22 season. The Seminoles return their top two scorers from last season in Caleb Mills (12.7) and Matthew Cleveland (11.5). They also brought in three top-100 recruits, though 6-11 freshman center Baba Miller will miss the first 16 games of the season for a travel payment that was ruled an NCAA violation.

2021-22 record: 20-15 (11-9 Pac-12); NIT second round

Notes: Will Richardson is back after scoring 14.7 points per game and earning second-team all-Pac-12 honors last season. Other returning starters include Quincy Guerrier and N’Faly Dante. The Ducks are hoping that experience helps them avoid a repeat of their late slide from last year, when they dropped eight of their final 12 games.

2021-22 record: 23-12 (12-6 Atlantic 10); NIT first round

Notes: Yuri Collins led all Division I players with 7.9 assists per game and can distribute to a couple of talented scorers. Gibson Jimerson ranked third in the Atlantic 10 with 16.3 points per game last season. Saint Louis also welcomes back Javonte Perkins, who had 17.1 points per game in 2020-21 before missing last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

TIPOFF: These teams seek NCAA bids they didn't get last year

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee quarterback Ryan Tannehill practiced in a limited fashion Friday, and coach Mike Vrabel said the veteran likely will be a game-time decision Sunday night when the Titans visit the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Titans (5-2) listed Tannehill as questionable and still have a walk-through Saturday before flying to Kansas City. Tannehill was questionable a week ago before being ruled out ahead of Tennessee's flight to Houston where rookie Malik Willis got his first NFL start.

Tennessee has an extra seven hours with the Sunday night kickoff against the Chiefs (5-2), which could be an advantage.

Tannehill sprained his right ankle in a win Oct. 23 over Indianapolis and left the stadium that day in a walking boot. He missed last week’s 17-10 win in Houston, snapping the 11-year veteran's 49-game start streak for Tennessee.

The veteran said Wednesday his mobility while dealing with the pain would be the deciding factor.

With Tannehill staying in Nashville, Willis threw only 10 passes for 55 yards in his NFL debut while being sacked three times. The Titans won by handing off 32 times to two-time NFL rushing champ Derrick Henry, the most carries by a running back in a game this season.

The Titans will be without starting safety Amani Hooker (left shoulder) and fullback Tory Carter (neck).

Jeffery Simmons, a 2021 Pro Bowl defensive tackle, is questionable with a sprained left ankle after not practicing all week. Outside linebacker Bud Dupree is questionable after being added to the injury report with an illness. Defensive lineman Kevin Strong (ankle) also is questionable.

No. 13 K-State ready to face Texas as Big 12 race heats up

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes rarely says the wrong thing when he stands at the podium. He is poised and polished, in victory or defeat, and has carried himself in that professional manner since he joined the Kansas City Chiefs.

So it speaks volumes of the lasting impression that&nbsp;the Titans' 27-3 rout&nbsp;of the Chiefs last season had on him when the Pro Bowl quarterback was asked about it this week: “We weren't ready,” Mahomes replied, “and they beat our (butt).”

Only he used a three-letter word for derrière rather than a four-letter one.

That's about as close as you'll get to Mahomes cursing in public.

“They have that mentality that they're going to come in and win,” Mahomes continued, by way of an explanation, “and a lot of times in this league, when you don't have the confidence coming in, you're going to lose. But when you have a team that is as confident as you, it's going to be a battle.”

The Titans (5-2) have every reason to be confident as they visit Kansas City (5-2) for a Sunday night showdown between divisional leaders. They've won five of the past six in the series, including a wild-card playoff game, though the one defeat happened to come in the AFC championship game and sent the Chiefs to the Super Bowl.

In any case, the Titans also roll into Arrowhead Stadium&nbsp;having won five straight&nbsp;after an 0-2 start.

“It's tough. It's a fun place to play. It’s an atmosphere that you dream about when you’re a kid, going into a rowdy road environment. That is exactly it,” said Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who hopes to return after missing last week's win over Houston with an ankle injury. “They love football. They’re loud. They’re into it the whole game.”

There are plenty of familiar faces from the last time the teams met in Kansas City for that AFC title game; Mahomes and Tannehill are two of them. Another is Titans running back Derrick Henry, who just&nbsp;gashed the Texans for 219 yards&nbsp;and two touchdowns last week. He was held to 69 yards rushing by Kansas City on Jan. 19, 2020.

“There are going to be things that you’re going to do to try and stop him. I think the whole NFL has tried that somewhere,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who is 20-3 when his teams are coming off a bye. “He’s a great player, and you’re not going to stop him on every play. You just want to get the numbers up where it’s a reasonable number of stops.”

The Chiefs did that pretty well last year, too, holding Henry to 86 yards rushing.

It didn't matter. They still lost in a blowout in Nashville that Mahomes and Co. remember to this day.

“You watch that on film and see how you played, it wasn't just them beating us,” Mahomes said. “We played bad and they just put it down on us at the end of the day. We have to understand they're going to be ready to go.”

WHERE THERE'S A WILL(IS), THERE'S A WAY

If Tannehill isn't available, the Titans would start third-round pick Malik Willis for the second straight game. Willis was 6 of 10 for 55 yards with an interception last week against the Texans.

The Chiefs sent third- and sixth-round picks to the Giants&nbsp;last week for Kadarius Toney, a former first-round pick who had struggled to stay healthy in New York. Toney not only gives the Chiefs a potential game-breaking playmaker at wide receiver, he also can help out in the punt return game, where rookie Skyy Moore has struggled with muffed punts.

“It feels good to be wanted by a team,” said Toney, who has recovered from a pair of hamstring injuries. “I felt like this was a great opportunity for everybody. Fresh start for me, step into the AFC and show what I can do over here.”

The Chiefs will be playing the first of two games without defensive end Frank Clark,&nbsp;who was suspended&nbsp;for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. That could mean more pass-rushing opportunities for Carlos Dunlap, who has two sacks this season and needs two more to reach 100 for his career.

“I've had a couple games now with a chance for it,” Dunlap said. “Want to get that done so I can get over that hump.”

Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie should play for the first time since hurting his hamstring in the opener in Arizona. The first-round pick could have played the past two games, but Kansas City opted to play it safe and wait out the bye week.

The Titans and Chiefs are tied for the second-best record in the AFC behind the Bills, who have beaten them both. That means the game could have playoff implications, such as where the teams would play if they meet again.

“I just focus on ways that we think we can beat the Chiefs and how we can prepare. All that stuff really takes care of itself,” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said. “The preparation, how we get ready and how we ultimately play, not what could be or what might happen down the road.”

Three weeks earlier against TCU, the Jayhawks lost quarterback Jalon Daniels when he was tackled hard on his shoulder, forcing them to turn to Jason Bean with mixed results during what has become a three-game losing streak.

Gundy said Sanders would mostly rest this week, rather than practice like usual, but “he's doing good” and the No. 18 Cowboys are going to “try to get him back and get him going, just like we've been doing.” Meanwhile, Leipold said Daniels practiced during the Jayhawks' bye week, raising hopes that his dual-threat dynamo would face Oklahoma State.

“He's doing some things,” Leipold said without elaborating. “We'll see.”

Even after he was held to 147 yards passing in a 48-0 loss last week to the Wildcats, the versatile Sanders remains second in the Big 12 in yards and touchdowns through the air. He is also second among Big 12 quarterbacks with 343 yards rushing.

If he can't go, the Cowboys (6-2, 3-2 Big 12) would turn to Gundy's son, Gunnar, who finished out the game last Saturday.

The week off could also help the Jayhawks get dynamic defensive back Cobee Bryant back from an ankle injury that he sustained against Oklahoma on Oct. 15. He has two interceptions, including one he returned 86 yards for a touchdown.

Gundy blamed some of the Cowboys' struggles at Kansas State on some changes in practice that he made to deal with a rash of injuries. He didn't describe them in detail, but Gundy said practice would be back to normal this week.

“There’s a lot of different ways to handle this as a coach, different philosophies," he said, "but one consistent philosophy for most coaches is when you show up Saturday you want to have as many guys as you can have. I was a little more concerned than maybe should have been about where we were at from an injury standpoint.”

Deondre Jackson had six carries for 20 yards against the Wildcats, the most work the Texas A&amp;M transfer has had since he arrived at Oklahoma State. Or in his college career, for that matter — he had four carries over the past three seasons.

“It was certainly something we can work with," Gundy said.

The Cowboys are a game behind Kansas State and two back of TCU in the Big 12, and having lost to both, their hopes of playing in the conference title game would likely be dashed by another loss. Kansas is still trying to win a sixth game and become bowl-eligible for the first time since 2008.

The Jayhawks return home for the first time in nearly a month, and much has changed: They were 5-0 heading into their last home game and have now lost three straight, including two on the road. But Leipold is hopeful fans, who had sold out their previous three home games, turn out in big numbers once again on Saturday.

“I hope the future of this program and as we continue to work to build winning consistently in this program, that it’s not undefeated records that get us to fill this place,” Leipold said. "Because that’d be a lot of non-filled stadiums across college football, and I still hope that people are excited and though the wins of late haven’t been there.”
