KANSAS CITY, Mo (AP)
— Lane Thomas opened the game with a home run, Corey Dickerson’s
three-run shot highlighted an eight-run sixth inning and Luis Garcia
had six hits as the Washington Nationals outslugged the Kansas City
Royals 12-10. The eight-run inning was the largest scoring inning in
Nationals’ history and came against Kansas City’s Jordan Lyles
and Josh Staumont. Garcia and Joey Meneses also drove in runs in the
sixth, and teammate Jeimer Candelario added a two-RBI triple in the
eighth. Patrick Corbin (4-5) worked 6 1/3 inning, allowing six runs,
seven hits, four walks with six strikeouts.

DENVER (AP) —
Francisco Lindor homered and drove in four runs, leading Max Scherzer
and the New York Mets past the Colorado Rockies 5-2 on Friday night. 
Brandon Nimmo
tripled twice, walked three times and scored three runs during a
perfect night at the plate for the Mets, who have won seven of nine
following a 6-16 skid. Nimmo, who grew up in Wyoming about two hours
from Coors Field, played in front of 100 family members and friends.
They saw him become the first player in franchise history to have two
triples and three walks in one game. Scherzer (4-2)
struck out eight in seven innings of one-run ball. Adam Ottavino got
two outs against his former team for his fifth save, aided by Nolan
Jones’ baserunning blunder in the ninth.

CLEVELAND (AP) —
Shane Bieber worked into the seventh inning and got another win over
the NL Central as Amed Rosario’s three-run double sent the
Cleveland Guardians to a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Bieber
didn’t have his best stuff but the right-hander limited the
Cardinals to two sacrifice flies before a pair of two-out walks got
him into trouble in the seventh. Bieber allowed two runs and five
hits in 6 2/3 innings before being pulled. He’s 9-1 in his career
against NL Central teams. Emmanuel Clase gave up a run in the ninth
before closing it out for his MLB-leading 17th save. The Guardians
have played 23 one-run games, most in the majors.

ARLINGTON, Texas
(AP) — Kaelen Culpepper went 4 for 5 with five RBIs — including a
three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning — and German
Fajardo allowed five hits over 7 1/3 innings to help Kansas State
beat Kansas 7-1 in an elimination game at the Big 12 Tournament. No.
5 seed Kansas State plays fourth-seeded TCU — which beat the
Wildcats 16-3 in the tournament’s opening game — in the
semifinals. Nick Goodwin led off the bottom of the second inning with
a walk and Brady Day followed with a single before Culpepper hit a
shot to left that made it 3-0. Fajardo had a season-high nine
strikeouts. Jake English went 2 for 3 with a solo homer in the third
for No. 8 seed Kansas.

ARLINGTON, Texas
(AP) — David Mendham hit a three-run home run to spark a five-run
second inning and Oklahoma State defeated Oklahoma 8-3 to advance to
the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament. The top-seeded Cowboys
(39-17) move on to play Texas Tech on Saturday. Mendham, the No. 8
hitter, finished with three hits — also driving in two runs with a
seventh-inning single for Oklahoma State. Roc Riggio used a single
and a sacrifice fly to drive in a pair. Leadoff batter John Spikerman
had two hits and drove in two runs for No. 7 seed Oklahoma (31-26).

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) —
Haley Lee’s grand slam helped Oklahoma claim a historic win. The
Sooners matched the longest win streak ever in Division I softball.
Oklahoma claimed its 47th straight victory by defeating Clemson 9-2
in super regional play. The Sooners tied Arizona’s run that started
in 1996 and stretched into the 1997 season. Oklahoma needs one more
win to have the record to itself and clinch a berth in the Women's
College World Series. Oklahoma State and Florida State clinched World
Series berths with wins.

STILLWATER, Okla.
(AP) — Kiley Noami went 3 for 3 with a double, home run and four
RBIs, Kelly Maxwell retired the first 19 batters she faced in a
two-hitter and No. 6 national seed Oklahoma State beat Oregon 9-0 to
sweep the best-of-three Stillwater Super Regional and advance to the
Women’s College World Series. Oklahoma State, which beat the Ducks
8-1 in Game 1, has clinched a berth in its 15th WCWS, including four
straight. Rachel Becker led off the game with a double to left and
scored when Naomi hit a single to center that made it 1-0 in the top
of the first and Maxwell had a perfect game through 6 1/3 innings
before Allee Bunker’s single up the middle in the seventh.

MIAMI (AP) — The
Boston Celtics are halfway to history, and that alone has gotten them
entry into a very small club. Of the first 150 teams that trailed a
best-of-seven series 3-0 in NBA history, just 14 of them found a way
to extend the matchup to Game 6. Most are usually eliminated by now.
Not the Celtics. They have cut the deficit in the Eastern Conference
finals against the Miami Heat to 3-2. They trail the series yet
seeming to have all the momentum going into Game 6 in Miami on
Saturday night.

LAS VEGAS (AP) —
Alec Martinez was part of the 2014 Los Angeles Kings team that erased
a 3-0 first-round series deficit and beat Joe Pavelski and the San
Jose Sharks in Game 7. Pavelski and coach Pete DeBoer were the
centerpiece of a Sharks comeback from 3-1 down in the opening round
of the 2019 playoffs to knock off the Vegas Golden Knights. And now,
the Dallas Stars are trying to repeat history trailing 3-1 entering
Game 5 of the Western final on Saturday at Vegas.

FORT WORTH, Texas
(AP) — There will be no weekend party at the Colonial for Michael
Block. The club pro from California who finished tied for 15th at the
PGA Championship was 15 over par over a grueling 36 holes at
Colonial. He was exhausted but thankful after the wild ride of the
past week. His 4-over 74 on Friday was seven strokes better than his
opening round in the Charles Schwab Challenge, where he got a late
sponsor's exemption after Oak Hill. He also has an exemption to play
in the RBC Canadian Open in two weeks. So the Block party's not
completely over yet.

CARSON CITY, Nev.
(AP) — The Oakland Athletics are asking Nevada for $380 million for
a 30,000 seat, $1.5 billion retractable roof stadium on the Las Vegas
Strip. A bill introduced Friday in the Nevada Legislature details the
long-awaited financing plan. Lawmakers have a little more than a week
to consider the plan before they adjourn June 5. The bulk of Nevada's
contribution would come from $180 million in transferable tax credits
from the state and $120 million in county bonds, which can vary based
on interest rate returns. The plan doesn't directly raise taxes,
meaning it needs a simple majority vote in the Senate and Assembly,
not two-thirds approval.

(AP) — Brayden Taylor drove in three runs and scored four times and
TCU blew open a close game with a five-run sixth inning to defeat
Kansas 14-4 in eight innings in a winners bracket game of the Big 12
Tournament. Taylor, who had four hits, ripped his 21st home run in
the sixth inning and reached 60 RBIs for the season with the two-run
shot. No. 4 seed TCU advances to the final round of the upper bracket
of the double-elimination tournament and will face either No. 8
Kansas or No. 5 Kansas State on Saturday. Luke Savage got the win
after allowing three hits and one run in 3 1/3 innings of middle
relief.

ARLINGTON, Texas
(AP) — Ty Ruhl and Tyson Neighbors combined for a two-hitter and
Kansas State eliminated top-seeded Texas 6-0 in the Big 12
Tournament. Kansas State (34-23) plays in another elimination game on
Friday. Texas (38-20) was the first team eliminated from the
tournament. Dom Hughes went 3 for 4, including an RBI single in the
first inning to give Kansas State a 1-0 lead that would hold until a
five-run seventh. Kansas State chased starter Lebarron Johnson after
leading off the seventh with a single. The Wildcats scored five runs
with the bases loaded — two on walks. Nick Goodwin hit his two-run
double off the third Texas pitcher of the inning.

ARLINGTON, Texas
(AP) — Kevin Bazzell delivered a two-out walk-off single in the
ninth inning, lifting Texas Tech to a 10-9 victory over Oklahoma in
the Big 12 Tournament. The Red Raiders scored three runs in the ninth
to defeat the Sooners on a night when the TTU pitching staff issued
nine walks, threw three wild pitches and hit one batter. Bazzell’s
winning hit was set up by consecutive RBI-singles from Tracer Lopez
and Nolen Hester. After Hester’s hit, Gage Harrelson kept the
inning alive with a single and Bazzell followed with his only hit in
five at-bats. Josh Sanders pitched three perfect innings for the win.

ARLINGTON, Texas
(AP) — Roc Riggio hit a go-ahead single in the eighth inning and
Oklahoma State edged West Virginia 3-2 in the Big 12 Tournament to
give coach Josh Holliday his 400th career victory. Oklahoma State
(38-17) plays in another must-win game on Friday. West Virginia
(39-18) became the second top-three seed to be eliminated from the
tournament after No. 1 Texas lost earlier. Oklahoma State sophomore
Juaron Watts-Brown struck out the first two batters of the ninth
inning before West Virginia loaded the bases after two hit batters
and a double. Watts-Brown ended it with his seventh strikeout in
three innings to get his sixth win of the season.

Ezequiel Tovar singled through a five-man infield during a
ninth-inning storm, lifting Colorado over the Miami Marlins 7-6
Thursday after the Rockies wasted a four-run lead in the top of the
inning. Colorado took a 6-2 lead with four runs in the eighth, but
Jorge Soler and pinch-hitter Garrett Cooper hit two-run homers on
curveballs from Pierce Johnson in the ninth. Huascar Brazobán (0-1)
walked Kris Bryant and Elias Díaz on four pitches each starting the
bottom half, retired Randal Grichuk on a flyout and after getting
ahead of Ryan McMahon 0-2, threw four straight balls that loaded the

After an RBI-single by Nunez and a run-scoring groundout by Bowen, Taylor homered to right field. Fontenelle capped the inning by scoring on a fielder's choice. Fontenelle finished with three runs scored and an RBI.

TCU added a run in the seventh and three in the eighth to invoke the run rule.

Luke Savage (3-3) got the win after allowing three hits and one run in 3 1/3 innings of middle relief. Hunter Cranton (3-4) took the loss.

Clinching their second consecutive KJCCC West Title, the 6th ranked Barton Community College Baseball team was recognized Tuesday afternoon with the Cougars netting the Jayhawk West Coach of the Year award with nine members joining the KJCCC West team and two landing on the All-Region VI team announced Tuesday afternoon.

Finishing with the program's best single season record of 51-10 and top mark in the Jayhawk West at 26-6, Head Coach Brent Biggs was tabbed the KJCCC West Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season and third time in his nine-year career. Not dropping a series for the second straight year, Biggs, and his Cougars surpassed the 40-win mark for the fourth time in his tenure while concluding the regular season ranked 6th nationally.

Middle infielder Ricardo Sanchez and outfielder Riley Silva headlined the nine individuals with First Team All-KJCCC West and All-Region VI Second Team honors. Balanced up and down the lineup all season long four of the selections came on the second-team list outfielder Robby Bolin, utility Quinton Robertson and starting pitchers David Stuart and Tegan Cain. First baseman Dryden Howse and reliever Hunter Jones concluded the selections with All-Jayhawk West honorable mentions nods.

Kansas State pitchers combine for 2-hitter, eliminate Texas

The Barton Community College men's track and field team exceeded their No. 4 ranking in bringing home a 3rd place trophy Saturday at the 2023 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Championships in Hobbs, New Mexico.

Barton finished in the solid bronze position with 79.50 points, 20.5 points behind the shared title of host New Mexico Junior College and South Plains College while Iowa Western Community College was 24 points behind the Cougars in 4th place overall.

The Cougars had fifteen scoring performances in the three days of action while posting 15 personal and/or season bests, to go along with, five impacts on the storied Barton all-time top ten lists.

A trio of throwers compiled 57 of Barton's points, winning three of the four events including two coming from freshman Christopher Young on Saturday by winning the morning's javelin (63.96m, 209-10) before heading to the pit in capturing the shot put with a program 3rd best 18.63m, 61-01.50) dent in the ground.

Sophomore Brandon Lloyd was the big story in the first two days of competition, breaking the program, national meet, and NJCAA record in the discus with a 65.32 (214-04) distance. Lloyd marked five of his six discus throws over the 55m mark but his third toss shattered records in leading a 1-3-6 Barton finish in the event. (*bettered the Championship meet record set in 2021 by over seven feet and reset the 1995 national overall record by nearly four feet).

Lloyd's impact wasn't the only one felt in the discus on the program's all-time list as Lloyd replaced Christopher Crawford atop the chart while Young, who was second on the list, slid down to third despite a personal best 59.68m (195-10) in placing third on the national stage. Crawford, whose 59.93m throw at the Region VI Championships two weeks ago put him temporary at the top, placed 6th on Friday with a 58.31m (191-04) mark.

The Cougar men's first points came in Thursday's hammer throw with Young leading Barton's trio with a 3rd place 55.88m (183-04) throw. Lloyd added two points to Young's six by placing seventh overall at 50.40m (165-04) while Crawford came up seven inches shy of points with a 9th place finish at 50.07m (164-03).

Almond Small's six points led Barton's eleven points in the sprints. Placing 5th in the 200m in 20.70, Small bettered his program 5th best time in the in the prelims by clocking a 20.29. Already having the program's 11th fastest 100m time (10.10), Small clocked a 10.21 in the prelims before a 10.46 final time to place 7th overall.

Also in the record book with a program 5th best 400m time (45.61), Elijah Mosley earned Barton five points with a 4th placing in a slightly slower 45.68 clocking.

Mosley and Small helped led the relay teams to a pair of 4th place finishes in season best times. Joined by Aaron Charles and Jayden Singleton for the 4x100m in a 39.77 time, the duo were joined by Revon Williams and Fabian Campbell in clocking a 3:08.62 four trips around the oval time.

Jalen McGee tied a season best and just missed a pair of other bests in his three jumping events. Placing 10th in Thursday's long jump (7.32m, 24-00.25) to miss by a half inch, McGee tied his season best with a 2.02m (6-07.50) high jump to place 7th before coming up two inches shy of a triple jump best with a 9th placing and just 1.5 inches from earning points.

The 2023 All-Region VI Baseball Selections Announced

The Barton Community College women's track and field team put up twenty personal and/or season best efforts this past week to bring home 3rd place hardware from Hobbs, New Mexico, at the 2023 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Championships.

The 2nd ranked Cougars going into the meet had twenty-one scoring performances in the three days of action, compiling 92.50 balanced points on the scoreboard to better South Plains College's 82 points for the final hardware. Host New Mexico Junior College piled up 130.50 points for the title with Region VI member Cloud County Community College 8.5 points ahead of Barton with 101 points for the team runner-up.

Barton won two individual titles, none more exciting than the oval hand-offs as the Cougars' tandem of Antiana Walsh, Oarabile Tshosa, Danae Nembhard, and Naiya Morgan not only won the event in 44.15 seconds but recorded the storied program's 5th fastest time ever.

Tshosa and Morgan earned the Cougars 14 more points in the sprints with Dy'Mond Wiley clocking a season best 55.92 in the 400m for an 8th place finish.

Already having the program's 5th fastest 100m time (11.26), Tshosa took 4th in 11.62 with Morgan placing 7th on a 11.74 personal best non-wind aided time.

In the 200m both made program impacts in the preliminary round, Tshosa clocking a 23.22 in moving into the 6th slot of the all-time list while Morgan jumped into the 4th spot of the historical list with a blazing 23.13 time. The duos weren't able to repeat the time in the following day's finals, Tshosa timing a 23.38 in finishing 3rd while Morgan clocked a 23.99 in placing 8th.

Walsh had two of the Cougars' new personal or season bests, clocking a 11.61 in the 100m to finish 10th with a 23.66 line crossing for 12th in the 200m.

Two more bests occurred in the 100m hurdles, the program's 6th spot holder Danae Nembhard just missing her previous fastest 13.44 with a season best 13.51 to place third with Kay-Lagay Clarke clocking a best 13.93 in prelims before placing 6th on a eyelash slower 13.97 finals time.

The throwing group led Barton's points with 31, fourteen coming from Kelsie Murrell-Ross including the shot put title on Saturday. Third on the program all-time list (16.08m, 52-09.25), Murrell-Ross defended her outdoor title with a 15.49m (50-09.75) dent in the ground while Treneese Hamilton, who has the program's 5th furthest throw ever (14.89m, 48-10.25), grabbing the 4th spot on her fifth throw of the day at 14.11m (46-03.50). Also on the program's discus all-time chart in the 6th slot (48.78m, 160-00), Murrell-Ross marked a 45.66m (149-10) on Friday for a 5th placing.

Hamilton earned eleven points in closing out her freshman campaign, adding to her shot put performance with a 5th place javelin finish at 42.12m (138-02), two feet behind her program 10th best throw, and a personal best 46.04m (151-01) hammer throw in placing 7th overall.

Efe Latham, who owns the program's 8th best hammer throw, missed her season and career best by one inch in placing third with a 50.50m (165-08) mark. Latham would also place 10th in the javelin (35.92m, 117-10) and 12th in the shot put (12.27m, 40-03.00) to wind up her Barton career.

On Friday the grueling heptathlon wrapped up with another 8 points going on the Barton total. Ana Couto had a pair of event runner-ups (100m hurdles and shot put) to finish 4th with 4972 points while Kayleigh Prentiss had three personal bests in compiling 4395 for 6th place of the fourteen entry field.

Barton gained another 17.5 points in the jumps beginning in day one's long jump as Jazmine Williamson edged out Brittania Ingram's personal best for 3rd place by two inches on a 5.99m (19-07.75) splash in the sand as Clarke was less than three inches from points on a 10th place 5.64m (18-06.00) mark.

On Friday Williamson gained Barton another 4.5 points in just missing a personal best height with a 1.70m (5-07) high jump with Clarke closing out the points in Saturday's triple jump on a personal best 12.24m (40-02.00) to place 7th.

In the meet's final event, the 4x400m tandem couldn't repeat its season best 3:44.20 preliminary time from a day earlier as Morgan, Walsh, Tshosa, and Wiley crossed in 7th place at 3:47.09.

Barton women's track and field takes 3rd at Nationals

Patrick Mahomes would rather win Super Bowls than a contest to make the most money.

That doesn't mean the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback hasn't seen what's been happening across the NFL.

Mahomes signed a 10-year, $450 million extension in 2020 that set the bar for quarterbacks, but it already has been surpassed several times over. The Eagles' Jalen Hurts signed a five-year, $255 million deal April 17 that briefly made him the NFL's highest-paid player, until Lamar Jackson signed a five-year, $260 million deal with the Ravens a mere 10 days later.

That immediately raised the question about whether Mahomes would want to redo his contract.

“Me, my agent and the team always keep open communication, and we always try to do whatever is best for the team, and obviously I want to do what is best for me as well,” Mahomes said after a voluntary workout Wednesday at the team's facility. "But I've always said I'm about legacy and winning rings more than making money at this moment.

“I know we keep communication. We see what's going on around the league," he continued, "but at the same time, I'll never do anything that will hurt us from keeping the great players around me. It's about teetering on that line.”

Still, the deal Mahomes signed just three years ago already has slipped to seventh in terms of annual value, behind far less accomplished QBs such as the Broncos' Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray of the Cardinals and the Browns' Deshaun Watson.

“Everybody wants to get paid a lot of money when they think they're the best at their craft,” Mahomes said. “But when you look at the greats, they find that sweet spot where they make a lot of money but they keep great players around them.”

Mahomes is coming off perhaps the best year of his career, throwing for a league-leading 5,250 yards and 41 touchdowns with only 12 interceptions. He was chosen for his fifth straight Pro Bowl, voted the AP's player of the year for the second time and, in February, helped Kansas City rally in the second half for a Super Bowl victory over Hurts and the Eagles.

Given those accomplishments, it's hardly surprising that many are curious whether another contract is in the works, especially with Joe Burrow of the Bengals expected to reset the market with a new contract before the start of the season.

“You just want to not hurt other quarterbacks when their contracts come up,” Mahomes said. “You want to keep pushing but it's not about being the highest-paid guy. It's not about making a ton of money. I've made enough money where I'll be set for life. But at the same time, you have to find that line where you're making good money and keeping great players around you.”

Mahomes spent the first part of the offseason program working out with wide receivers and tight ends at his home in Texas, but he was back at the Chiefs training facility this week for the start of more structured voluntary workouts.

In between, Mahomes jetted his way to the Met Gala, the Kentucky Derby andt the Formula One race in Miami.

“I always wanted to go to the Kentucky Derby but I wanted to go after we won the Super Bowl, and in 2019, we had COVID happening," Mahomes said. “It's just picking and choosing what you can do, but now we're back in football and locking down and getting your body in the right spot. I have a few more trips but I've kind of settled down this offseason.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he had no reason to believe Mahomes wouldn't be there.

“He's all in and going after it,” Reid said Wednesday, “and he challenges himself and he challenges those around him to be great, on both sides of the ball. Everything is alive out there and moving fast and as a head coach, I appreciate that.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pinch-hitter Zack Short hit a three-run homer to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 6-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

Riley Greene also homered, doubled and scored twice for the Tigers in the game that was delayed 29 minutes by rain.

“Any time you leave a place having won a series on the road, it’s loud in the clubhouse,” Detroit manager AJ Hinch said with a smile. “It’ll be loud on the plane, even though it’s late.”

Greene led off the sixth with a double and went to third on an infield single by Matt Vierling. Short drove them both home with the first pinch-hit home run of his career, a 416-foot shot to left field off Josh Taylor (1-2).

“I faced that guy last month a few times (in Triple-A),” Short said. “I wasn't really expecting one pitch or another, but I saw it early. All we needed was something into the outfield and I put my best swing on it.”

Will Vest (1-0) retired all four hitters he faced, striking out two. Alex Lange picked up his ninth save in 10 tries.

Both starting pitchers were effective, even though they didn't stick around very long. Matthew Boyd allowed one run on three hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out six. Zach Greinke gave up one run on four hits in five innings, walking one and striking out five.

They were sharp early. Greinke didn't allow his first hit until the fourth inning, while Boyd allowed only one hit in his first three innings.

“It was a good day,” Boyd said. “We built off what we've been doing. We got ahead in counts. I would have liked to put guys away a little faster, but we kept it close in the inning when they had some baserunners.”

When Greinke finally gave up a hit, Greene made sure it counted. He launched a 440-foot blast into the fountains in right-center field, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

“I tried to throw it more inside,” Greinke said of the pitch Greene hit out. “It ended up being more middle, middle up. It definitely wasn’t right where I wanted to throw it, but there are some spots I would have been more upset with than where it ended up. But, he hit it pretty good, so, obviously, not too good of a spot.”

The Royals tied it in the bottom of the inning on an RBI fielder's choice by MJ Melendez. They stranded runners at third base in the fourth and fifth innings.

The Royals got a run in the seventh on Vinnie Pasquantino's two-out RBI single, but the Tigers answered that with a pair in the eighth. Jonathan Schoop's two-out, two-run double drove home Spencer Torkelson and Short. The Royals added a run in the eighth on a single by Melendez and a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Witt Jr.

Tigers: Return to Detroit, where they will open a four-game series with the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. The White Sox will send RHP Lucas Giolito (3-3, 3.63 ERA) to the mound to face Alex Faedo (0-2, 4.60 ERA).

Gurriel had four hits, Sandy Alcantara limited Colorado to two runs
in six innings and the Miami Marlins beat the Rockies 10-2 on
Wednesday night to snap a three-game losing streak. Alcantara (2-5)

season, striking out three and allowing his second-fewest runs this

preliminary agreement between his office, legislative leaders in the
state and the Oakland Athletics for a stadium funding plan. It comes

will contribute to a $1.5 billion ballpark in Las Vegas. The
preliminary agreement indicates a funding bill could come to the
Nevada Legislature in the coming days. It still needs approval from
both the Senate and Assembly, with less than two weeks until the
session ends. The A’s have been looking for years for a home to
replace Oakland Coliseum, where the team has played since arriving
from Kansas City for the 1968 season.

More than half of the respondents to an NCAA-commissioned survey of 18- to 22-year-olds acknowledged placing sports wagers, with two-thirds of those who live on college campuses saying they engage in betting.

The NCAA announced the results Wednesday, less than a month after the baseball coach at Alabama and athletes at Iowa and Iowa State were found to have made sports wagers in violation of NCAA rules.

The purpose of the survey was to explore the prevalence of sports wagering behaviors. The Boston-based polling firm Opinion Diagnostics conducted the online survey last month and received 3,527 responses. The pool was almost evenly divided between college students and young adults not attending college.

The NCAA said it would commission an athlete-only survey this fall.

The growth of online betting platforms and gambling operator advertising prompted the survey, NCAA President Charlie Baker said.

“We needed a new baseline so we can better understand what student-athletes are experiencing on their campuses and among their peers so we can best help them deal with the potentially disruptive dynamic of legal sports betting,” Baker said.

“Sports betting has increased interest in sports of all kinds, including college sports, which is great for our fans, but the NCAA and everyone from coaches to athletics department staff and college presidents must better understand what impact sports betting may have on student-athletes," he said.

The survey found 58% of respondents acknowledged having made at least one sports wager, and 67% of students living on campuses said they are bettors and tend to bet at a higher frequency.

Some 41% of responding college students who wager on sports have placed a bet on their school’s teams and 35% have used a student bookmaker.

Among all respondents, 30% said their typical single wager was between $10 and $20, and 6% reported having lost more than $500 on sports betting in a single day.

Mobile apps were the preferred choice for making wagers, with 28% choosing that method. Live in-game betting is the most popular type of bet for those that use betting apps or visit in-person sportsbooks.

With the win over No. 13 Texas, the eighth-seeded Jayhawks (25-30) will now play TCU at 4 p.m., on Thursday in a winner’s bracket game, with the winner advancing to Saturday’s semifinals. Wednesday’s win marked KU’s first Big 12 Tournament win since a 15-14 win over Kansas State in 11 innings in 2019 and its first win over a No. 1 seed in the tournament since a 2018 win over Texas.

“I’m super proud of the effort of our guys today,” Coach Dan Fitzgerald said. “We fought all year. We have a really cohesive, together group and they’ve been awesome since August.
