Most of the 30
automatic qualifiers and 34 at-large picks for the NCAA baseball
tournament will be determined in this week's conference tournaments.

Penn and Army became
the first two qualifiers Monday. The Quakers won the Ivy League with
a 16-3 victory over Princeton and Army beat Bucknell 21-6 to win the
Patriot League.

The 16 NCAA regional
hosts will be announced Sunday and the rest of the 64-team field next
Monday. The College World Series is June 16 through June 25 or 26 in
Omaha, Nebraska.

helped the Golden Eagles to 37 wins with a staff that lost 12
pitchers from last season. Berry is 519-272-1 in 14 seasons at

Conference tournaments to set stage for NCAA baseball regionals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Javier Báez hit a bases-clearing double in the 10th inning for his third hit of the night to lift the Detroit Tigers to an 8-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game series Monday night.

“It's the best feeling in the world,” Báez said in an on-field interview after the game. “I'm just happy that I got good contact.”

Báez had three hits in the game, but the first two combined for an exit velocity of about 112 mph and didn't leave the infield. His third hit was a line drive over the left-fielder's head.

“He probably got the softest hits tonight and he probably got the hardest hit tonight,” Detroit manager AJ Hinch said. “I'll take them both.”

Matt Vierling had three hits, including a home run, and four RBIs for the Tigers.

Alex Lange (2-0) earned the victory with two hitless innings of relief. Jose Cisnero picked up his first save.

“I think (Lange) was excellent tonight,” Hinch said. “We talk to him over and over about the back end of the game. He can't just wait on the last three outs and a clean inning all the time. These were clean innings, but he's going to need to be ready in the eighth. Tonight we needed him to pitch in a different part of the game.”

Scott Barlow (1-3) allowed Báez's winning hit and took the loss.

“(The bullpen) kept us in the game," Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. "They didn’t give up a run until the 10th inning. So, we couldn’t have asked for anything more.”

Neither starter was effective. Detroit's Michael Lorenzen gave up five runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings. Brady Singer allowed five runs and seven hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings. Singer came into the game with a 6-0 record with a 2.44 ERA in 10 career starts against the Tigers.

Detroit batters walked 10 times, the first time the Tigers had eight or more walks in consecutive games since June 13-14, 2016.

The Tigers got three runs in the first inning without much solid contact. Zach McKinstry led off with a single in the hole at second. With one out, Báez singled over first base and Spencer Torkelson walked. Singer then walked Akil Baddoo on four pitches to send home the first run. Vierling lined a single through the hole at short for two more runs.

The Royals wasted no time in getting back into the game. Vinnie Pasquantino launched a 424-foot, two-run home run and Salvador Perez followed with a 419-foot shot to tie the score before Lorenzen recorded the first out. It was the first time this year the Royals hit back-to-back home runs.

Vierling then put the Tigers back in front with a two-run home run in the third, giving him four RBIs on the night.

“I feel good (and) relaxed,” Vierling said. “Hitting is up and down sometimes. I feel like I'm seeing it well. I really like my approach right now. I'm just trying to stay with that as much as possible.”

Jackie Bradley Jr. hit his first homer as a Royal to tie the game in the fifth. Nicky Lopez tripled leading off the inning before Bradley hit it into the Tigers bullpen in left. Bradley snapped an 0-for-26 skid.

Royals IF Nicky Lopez returned from rehab assignment at Triple-A Omaha and was reinstated from IL. He has been out since May 2 with an emergency appendectomy. In a corresponding move, IF/OF Hunter Dozier was designated for assignment. Dozier was hitting .183 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 29 games this season.

The Tigers and Royals will play the second game of a three-game series. The Tigers will send LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (4-3, 2.06 ERA) to the mound. The Royals have not announced a starter.

It's a big deal to make it to the Class 5-1A State Swim and Dive Championships. It's an even bigger deal to make the finals as one of the top-16 teams in preliminary action. A pair of Great Bend relays swam on the final day of the season Saturday in Topeka.

The 200-medley relay team of senior Elly Somers, junior Emilee Hall, and sophomores Josephine Mazouch and Clarise Snapp twice set school records in the event this year. The girls were sitting No. 11 after Friday's preliminary. The Lady Panthers moved up a spot Saturday, finishing 10th in 2:00.11 to miss the final state medal by just over three seconds.

Great Bend also gained a position in the 400-free relay after a 14th-place finish in prelims Friday. The team of Somers, Hall, Mazouch, and freshman Braylee Carp placed 13th in 4:04.78 to miss the final state medal by 10 seconds.

Those were the only two finals events for Great Bend.&nbsp; Hall just missed the finals in the 100-back. Her time of 1:06.07 was good enough for 18th, just 0.62 seconds behind the last finals qualifier. Snapp finished 24th in the 100-breast in 1:21.14. Andover took the final qualifying spot in that race in 1:15.41.

Somers finished 21st in the 100-butterfly in 1:07.38. Bishop Carroll swam a 1:05.84 for the final spot in the finals. Mazouch placed 19th in the 100-free in 58.90, missing the finals by 0.55 seconds.

The 200-free relay team of Hall, Somers, Mazouch, and Sydney Kruckenberg disqualified.

Monday on Sports Day

CHICAGO (AP) — Luis Robert Jr. homered, Lance Lynn pitched six effective innings and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 on Sunday for a three-game series sweep.

Romy González went 3 for 3, including two-run triple that put the White Sox ahead for good as the Chicago won for the fifth time in six games. The White Sox also improved to 12-8 since an ugly 10-game slide.

Lynn (3-5) allowed two runs and four hits in his second straight win. The right-hander struck out six and walked two.

Lynn tossed the sixth straight quality start for the South Siders, whose rotation seems to be coalescing.

“The starters as a whole are doing what we're capable of,” Lynn said. “If we do what we're supposed to, it puts the bullpen in a good spot and you've seen them really take off too.”

Lynn kept dealing after giving up Michael Massey's deep two-run homer in the second that put the Royals ahead 2-0. Massey has three homers this year — all against Chicago.

“He just settled in and does what he does," manager Pedro Grifol said. “He just keeps us in games and knows who to navigate through that lineup three times.”

Kansas City finished with just four hits as three Chicago relievers closed it out, with Joe Kelly pitching a perfect ninth for his first save. The last-place Royals have dropped seven of nine.

Royals right-hander Carlos Hernández pitched the first two innings, retiring his six batters and striking out the first three. Max Castillo (0-1) then allowed five runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.

“(Hernández) was throwing the ball really well, challenged hitters and has really good stuff,” said Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said, who has no plans to stretch out Hernández beyond being an opener or reliever.

Robert hit a solo drive in the fourth for his 13th homer, and Chicago went ahead to stay with three runs in the fifth.

With one out and runners on second and third, González tripled to the base of the wall in right.

— Brooks Koepka is a major champion again. Gone are those injuries
that led to doubt whether he was still part of golf's elite. Koepka
won the PGA Championship at Oak Hill by closing with a 67 and winning

won the PGA Championship three times. And it was his fifth major
title. Only 14 players have won more. It was the first major by a LIV
Golf player since the Saudi-funded league began nearly a year ago.

N.C. (AP) — Kyle Larson turned in a dominating effort to win his
third All-Star race and earn $1 million in the Cup Series’ return

times. Jimmie Johnson has the most with four victories, while Larson,
Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt have three. Larson is the first to win
the All-Star race at three different tracks. He has won in Charlotte
in 2019 and Texas in 2021. Bubba Wallace finished second in the
200-lap non-points exhibition race, followed by Tyler Reddick, Chase

Alex Palou will lead the field to green in the Indianapolis 500 after
the young Spaniard put together the fastest four-lap pole run in
history Sunday. He edged Rinus VeeKay and Felix Rosenqvist and gave
Chip Ganassi Racing its third pole in a row. Palou whipped four laps
around the historic 2.5-mile speedway at an average of 234.217 mph.
That was a mere 0.007 mph faster than VeeKay, who still gave Ed
Carpenter Racing a front-row starting spot for the ninth time in the
last 11 years. Palou surpassed the record pole run of 234.046 mph
that Ganassi teammate Scott Dixon put up last year. It also was the
second-fastest qualifying effort, trailing only Arie Luyendyk’s
236.986, which he set the day after pole qualifying in 1996.

BALTIMORE (AP) —
Bob Baffert’s National Treasure has won the Preakness Stakes, hours
after another of the Hall of Famer's horses was euthanized on the
track with a racing injury. The sport was already facing questions
after a tumultuous leadup to the Kentucky Derby that included seven
horses dying of various causes over a 10-day span at Churchill Downs.
Derby winner Mage finished third in the Preakness. His defeat means
there will not be a Triple Crown winner for a fifth consecutive year.
Blazing Sevens finished second by a head. Baffert won the Preakness

Monday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

After surviving one elimination game of the Region VI/Plains District Tournament on Friday evening, the 6th ranked Barton Community College baseball team saw its historic season come to an end Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium.

Holding a 2-1 lead heading into the seventh inning, Kansas City Kansas erupted for seven runs in the final three innings as the Cougars fell 8-2.

Recording the most wins in program single season history, the Cougars finished the 2023 season with an impressive mark of 51-10 while KCK improved to 39-22 before falling to Cowley in the nightcap 4-1.

Trailing 1-0 through one inning, Barton struck for the tying run just two hitters in as a leadoff plunking to Henry Hayman and wild pitch advanced Hayman into scoring position with Grant Nottlemann distributing out one of his two hits on the afternoon to draw even, 1-1.

Locked in a pitcher's duel with Blue Devils Alan Mercado making his first start of the season and Cougar starter Aidan Sowers, the score would stand at 1-all over the next two frames. 

Making just his fifth start of the season and second start since April 3rd, Sowers escaped his biggest trouble of the day in the fifth, recording his biggest of his six strikeouts leaving the bases loaded following a two-out single, walk and hit-by-pitch.

Riding the momentum into the home fifth, Barton grasped their final lead of the day and season, 2-1 on Ayden Blachowicz go-ahead run producing groundout scoring Riley Silva's leadoff single, advance to third off Robby Bolin's perfectly executed hit-and-run.

Getting the opening two outs in the top of the seventh, Blue Devils Jett Buck would send all momentum to the KCK dugout providing the first of five hits over the final three frames providing the tying run with a solo home run to left field.

Following a quiet home seventh, KCK took the lead for good as a leadoff single, walk, and 1-out walk loaded the bases with the go-ahead and eventual winning run crossing off Matthew Buffington's sacrifice fly.

KCK put the game out of reach in the ninth sending all nine to the plate and scoring five times highlighted behind Christian Ammann's three-run home run.

Held hitless since the sixth inning, Jaden Wiley tried to piece one final rally attempt with a two-out single in the ninth before a fielder's choice ended it.

Sowers earned a no-decision working six strong innings yielding three hits, one run, walking three and striking out six. Bryan Bartels tossed an inning allowing one run off one hit. Reece Hemmerling (6-2) suffered the loss pitching 1/3 inning. Hunter Jones went 2/3 innings with Kade Walker operating the final inning.

Nottlemann furnished two of the Cougars eight hits turning in a 2-of-4 day with an RBI. Quinton Robertson produced the lone extra base hit for Barton with a leadoff double in the fourth. Bolin, Silva, Wiley, Ricardo Sanchez, Dryden Howse concluded the Cougar hits each with a single.

6th ranked Barton Baseball has historic season end in Plains District Tournament

STILLWATER, Okla. – No. 21 Wichita State saw one of the best seasons in school history come to a close one game shy of the NCAA Stillwater Regional final. The Shockers dropped games to No. 6 Oklahoma State (6-0) and Nebraska (9-8) in nine innings.

Wichita State (44-12) came up two wins shy of the school mark for victories set in 2005 with 46. The Shockers made their third straight NCAA regional appearance and were ranked inside the Top 20 for the first time in program history.

Seniors Sydney McKinney, Zoe Jones and Lauren Mills played the final game of their collegiate careers. McKinney departs Wichita State as the greatest softball player to ever put on the Black &amp; Yellow, and possibly one of the greatest hitters in NCAA history.

Krystin Nelson had two of Wichita State's five hits. Zoe Jones, Sami Hood and Bailey Urban all had a hit apiece.

Alex Aguilar (15-3) allowed four runs on five hits in the start and Alison Cooper came out of the bullpen to throw 2.0 innings of relief.

Oklahoma State manufactured a run on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first following a Rachel Becker leadoff double.

After scoreless second and third innings, Oklahoma State extended its lead in the fourth behind three runs on four hits.

Wichita State threatened in the top of the fifth, loading the bases on singles from Hood and Nelson and a Taylor Sedlacek walk, but for the second time McKinney was robbed of a hit by the third baseman, snagging a screaming line drive to end the inning.

The Cowgirls tacked on an insurance run in the fifth and sixth to go up 6-0.

In what turned out to be the final game of McKinney's illustrious career, the All-American went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and three runs scored. Lauren Mills broke out of a slump with two home runs, a double and three RBI.

Lauren Lucas drove in a pair of runs to go with a double, Krystin Nelson homered, Addison Barnard had an RBI double and Sami Hood singled to round out the Shocker hitters.

Following a McKinney leadoff double, Addison Barnard sac bunt and a Nebraska wild pitch, Wichita State grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

In the top of the second, Mills unleashed a month and a half's worth of frustration on a 1-0 pitch. The senior crushed a solo home run over the batter's eye in center to put the Shockers in front, 2-0. Mills hadn't hit a home run since March 25 at UCF.

After Nebraska cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third behind a double and RBI single, Mills went back to work in the top of the fourth. She launched her second homer of the night, this one a laser to right.

Again, the Huskers came back with a run to make it 3-2 on an RBI groundout in the home half of the fourth. Just like Nebraska, Wichita State had its own response in the way of a leadoff solo home run from Nelson in the top of the fifth. It marked Nelson's first homer of the season and only second of her career.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, a solo home run cut it to 4-3. Looking for some insurance runs in the top of the seventh, Wichita State got two on Barnard's RBI double and Lucas' RBI groundout.

Needing only three outs, Wichita State went into the bottom of the seventh leading 6-3. Sandwiched in between two groundouts, a double kept the Huskers hopes alive. They would proceed to hit a two-run home run and an RBI single to tie the game at 6-6, sending the game to extras.

Both teams would put multiple baserunners on in the eighth, but neither team scored any runs.

The ninth inning would open with a McKinney single and immediately turn into a run on Lucas' RBI double down the left field line. After a Jones single, Mills put the Shockers up 8-6 on an RBI double.

Down to their final three outs, the Huskers punched back with a leadoff home run. Following a groundout, Nebraska tied the game at 8-8 after a single, walk and double. With two in scoring position, Katelyn Caneda walked it off on a grounder to second, as the runner on third beat the throw from Hood at second.

Shockers’ Season Ends in Stillwater

CHICAGO (AP) —
Jake Burger hit a three-run double in the sixth inning, helping Lucas
Giolito and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on
Saturday.

Yoán Moncada had
two RBIs as Chicago won for the fourth time in five games. Andrew
Benintendi and Luis Robert Jr. each scored two runs.

Burger has hit
safely in six games since returning from a strained left oblique,
going 11 for 22 with three homers and nine RBIs. He came through
again in this one, breaking open a tight game.

“For me, it's just
controlling everything and slowing the game down,” Burger said. “I
feel like I did that in the last at-bat real well."

With Chicago ahead
2-1, its first three batters reached in the sixth before Royals
starter Jordan Lyles was replaced by Jose Cuas. Benintendi walked and
Robert reached on catcher interference before Moncada walked.

After Andrew Vaughn
struck out swinging, Burger hit a liner into the gap in right-center.
Burger’s clutch swing gave the White Sox a 5-1 lead.

“It's a one-run
game and you've got to have some extra focus, especially in that
situation,” Burger said. “Fortunately I got the right pitch and
drove the ball to right-center.”

Giolito (3-3)
permitted one run and six hits in six innings. The right-hander has a
2.66 ERA his last eight starts.

“For me it's all
about taking it one pitch at a time, executing and working well with
Seby (catcher Zavala) on sequencing,” Giolito said.

Salvador Pérez hit
his 10th homer in Kansas City's sixth loss in eight games. Pérez
finished with three hits, including a double, off Giolito.

“With Salvy, he's
owned me over the course of my career,” Gioloto said,. “Some days
it's like I strike him out out two or three times in three at-bats.
Other days it's like homer, double, double. Today was one of those
days.”

Pérez was a lone
bright spot for the last-place Royals.

“He's a good
ballplayer man," Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “It's
no accident he's been doing this for 12-13 years.”

Royals right-hander
Jordan Lyles (0-8) was charged with five runs, four earned, and four
hits in five-plus innings.

Pérez drove a 3-2
slider just over the fence in left-center in the first for Kansas
City

But the White Sox
responded with two runs in the bottom half.

After Benintendi

Liam Hendriks, who is recovering from stage-4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma,
is expected to throw another live batting practice session, possibly
when the team is in Cleveland for a three-game series that starts

— The PGA Championship was plenty tough at rainy Oak Hill and so
was Brooks Koepka. He shot 66 and has a one-shot lead over Viktor
Hovland and Corey Conners going into the final round. Koepka had the
low score for the second straight round. He still needed some help
from Conners. The Canadian lost the lead when his bunker shot on the
16th plugged into the lip and led to double bogey. This is the second
straight major Koepka has the 54-hole lead. He lost it at the Masters
when he played it safe. He says he won't do that again.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) —
Arrow McLaren Racing paced the first day of qualifying for the
Indianapolis 500 by placing all four of its cars in the fast 12
shootout for the pole on Sunday. Felix Rosenqvist posted the
third-fastest qualifying effort in Indianapolis Motor Speedway
history to close the day atop the speed chart. He bumped McLaren
teammate Alexander Rossi from the top spot. Chevrolet had three of
the fastest four cars and landed eight in Sunday’s shootout. The
four entries from Chip Ganassi Racing will represent Honda in the
top-12 shootout Sunday. Rahal Letterman Lanigan had a terrible day
and three of its cars will battle Sunday to avoid being bumped from

Sunday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

Brandon Lloyd&nbsp;of the 4th&nbsp;ranked Barton Community College men's track and field team broke two records Friday during day two action of the 2023 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Championships in Hobbs, New Mexico.

The sophomore from Clarendon, Jamaica, marked five of his six discus throws over the 55m mark but his third toss shattered two records in leading a 1-3-6 Barton finish in the event.

Marking a 65.32m (214-04) distance, Lloyd bettered the Championship meet record set in 2021 by over seven feet and reset the 1995 national overall record by nearly four feet.

Lloyd's impact wasn't the only one felt in the event on the program's all-time list as Lloyd replaced&nbsp;Christopher Crawford&nbsp;atop the chart while&nbsp;Christopher Young, who was second on the list, slid down to third despite a personal best 59.68m (195-10) in placing third on the national stage.&nbsp; Crawford, whose 59.93m throw at the Region VI Championships two weeks ago put him temporary at the top, placed 6th&nbsp;on Friday with a 58.31m (191-04) mark.

The Cougars also saw a trio of program top ten impacts in the 200m preliminary rounds:&nbsp;Naiya Morgan&nbsp;(23.13) for 4th&nbsp;fastest all-time,&nbsp;Oarabile Tshosa&nbsp;(23.22) for 7th&nbsp;fastest, and&nbsp;Almond Small&nbsp;(20.29) for 5th&nbsp;fastest in men's program history.

Barton concluded day two with a lot of points still to be had in Saturday's finals, standing in 2nd&nbsp;on the women's side with 31.50 points, 23.5 behind Cloud County, while the Cougar men are in 4th&nbsp;with 28.50 points in trailing South Plains' leading 51 points.

On the women's side, the 2nd&nbsp;ranked Cougars' first eight points came in Thursday's hammer throw.&nbsp;Efe Latham&nbsp;just missed a personal best on a 50.50m (165-08) throw for 3rd&nbsp;place with&nbsp;Treneese Hamilton&nbsp;finishing 7th, also on a personal best throw marking at 46.04m (151-01).

Barton gained another 11 points in the later long jump,&nbsp;Jazmine Williamson&nbsp;edging out&nbsp;Brittania Ingram&nbsp;for 3rd&nbsp;place by two inches on a 5.99m (19-07.75) splash in the sand.&nbsp; On Friday Williamson gained Barton another 4.5 points in just missing a personal best height with a 1.70m (5-07) high jump.

On Friday the grueling heptathlon wrapped up with another 8 points going on the Barton total.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ana Couto&nbsp;had a pair of event runner-ups (100m hurdles and shot put) to finish 4th&nbsp;with 4972 points while&nbsp;Kayleigh Prentiss&nbsp;compiled 4395 for 6th&nbsp;place of the fourteen entry field.

The Cougar men's first points came in Thursday's hammer throw with Young leading Barton's trio of throwers with a 3rd&nbsp;place 55.88m (183-04) throw.&nbsp; Lloyd added two points to Young's six by placing seventh overall at 50.40m (165-04) while Crawford came up seven inches shy of points with a 9th&nbsp;place finish at 50.07m (164-03).

Jalen McGee, who placed 10th&nbsp;in Thursday's long jump (7.32m, 24-00.25), wrapped up Barton's two-day scoring with a tie for 7th&nbsp;place for 1.5 points in the high jump by tying a season best 2.02m (6-07.25) height.

Inclement weather to end each of the first two days has created an extra exciting timed finals for Barton's 4x100m relays, 400m hurdles, 400m dash entrants, and the Championships' always exciting final men's 4x400m relay.&nbsp; Friday night's women's discus was also postponed, set for a 3:00 p.m. Saturday start.

Barton had a number of athletes survive prelims and advancing to prelims.

Lloyd breaks national record at NJCAA Championships

CHICAGO (AP) — Michael Kopech almost nailed the batter with the game’s first pitch. After that, he was just about perfect.

Kopech gave up one hit over a career-high eight innings, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 2-0 on Friday night.

Kopech simply toyed with the Royals as the White Sox opened a weekend series between teams with two of the majors’ worst records on a winning note. The hard-throwing right-hander struck out a season-high 10 on 98 pitches, and bounced back from a loss to Houston and won for the second time in three starts.

Kopech (2-4) nearly hit Bobby Witt Jr. in the head with the game’s first pitch, but got him to ground out on a 3-1 fastball. He retired the the first 16 batters before giving up a bloop single to Michael Massey, who was erased on a double play. Massey also broke up a no-hit bid by the Padres’ Michael Wacha on Monday at San Diego when he lined a single leading off the eighth.

“I knew that it was in the works,” Kopech said. “I wasn’t really focused on it. And fortunately, (after) that happened, I was able to go right back to work because I wasn’t focused on it. I missed my location, he got a hit. That’s part of the game.”

The Royals did not get another runner. Kopech lobbied to go the distance after breezing through the eighth.

Manager Pedro Grifol said he would have kept him in if the no-hitter was intact. Instead, Kendall Graveman worked the ninth for his third save, getting Jackie Bradley Jr. on a fly to deep center to end the game.

“Almost just grabbed my glove and ran out there and waved off Graveman,” Kopech said. “I understand. I had a lot of rest coming up to this one but we are back on five days now and working over 100 pitches is hard to bounce back from.”

Manager Pedro Grifol said Hendriks threw about 20 pitches and “felt good.” But he also said several times there’s still no timetable on a return and that the organization will determine the next step. ... C Yasmani Grandal (right hamstring) was out of the lineup and might be again on Saturday. Grifol said he was available to pinch hit or catch if needed. Grandal was the DH against Cleveland on Thursday after leaving Wednesday’s game.UP NEXTRHP Lucas Giolito (2-3, 3.86 ERA) looks to continue a solid run for Chicago, while Kansas City RHP Jordan Lyles (0-7, 7.14) seeks his first win.
