CLEVELAND (AP) — Ryan Yarbrough completed a journey he never expected to take.

Two months after suffering facial fractures when he was struck by a 106 mph line drive, Yarbrough returned to the mound Sunday and helped the struggling Kansas City Royals to a 4-1 win over Cleveland that felt extra special.

“More than I could have dreamed of,” Yarbrough said.

With his wife, daughter and other family members at Progressive Field, Yarbrough (2-4), who didn't know what the future held when he was smashed by the liner from Oakland's Ryan Noda on May 7, pitched six solid innings as the Royals ended a six-game skid.

Yarbrough's statistical line was less important than him returning from a frightening moment that could have ended his career.

“I have an understanding of what happened and coming back from it and what could have been and how lucky and blessed I am,” said the 31-year-old left-hander. “It’s just been great and the amount of support from the guys, especially after the game. It's been great.”

Yarbrough's return was a huge boost for the Royals, who haven't had much to celebrate so far this season.

“Incredible," said center fielder Kyle Isbel, who homered and made a game-saving catch in the ninth for Kansas City. "That’s not just a baseball injury. That’s life. Seeing him walk into the dugout today, the energy he had was really incredible and it really sparked the dugout.”

Yarbrough said the quick response by Kansas City's medical personnel played an important role in his recovery. He feels lucky that he didn't need stitches or surgeries.

Once his facial bones healed, Yarbrough was determined to get back quickly.

"I don’t think anybody knew what the time frame was going to be or how long it was going to be,” he said. “It was just kind of a waiting game. Extremely blessed.”

After his first pitch, Yarbrough let his instincts take over.

“It was great. I felt like I’ve been able to soak it in the last couple days and really just try to think about it as going to back to work as much as possible," he said.

Carlos Hernández pitched two scoreless innings and Scott Barlow finished up for his 11th save, but not without some nervous moments.

Barlow gave up a pair of two-out singles in the ninth before Myles Straw sent a pitch toward the gap in right center. But Isbel got a nice jump and raced to his left before making his diving grab as Kansas City avoided a winless road trip.

“I just put my head down and ran to the spot,” Isbel said. "I stayed aggressive the whole time and I knew I could get to it.”

Michael Massey hit a two-run triple in Kansas City's three-run sixth off Shane Bieber (5-6), who came in 6-0 in 14 career starts against the Royals. The right-hander allowed four runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Kansas City staggered into the All-Star break at 26-65 — the second-most losses before the break in franchise history.

Cleveland reached the season's unofficial midpoint in first place in the AL Central and at .500 (45-45) or better for the seventh year in a row.

It's not certain how much longer Bieber will be around.

The Guardians will consider trading the 2020 Cy Young Award winner, who is only under contractual control through next season, before the Aug. 1 deadline. Cleveland could be enticed to move the 28-year-old for the right package to help them this season or in the future.

Isbel led off the fifth with his second homer, a shot over the wall in right-center, to tie it 1-1.

Bieber then hurt himself by hitting Perez — with an 0-2 pitch — and Kansas City's All-Star catcher scored on Fermin's double. After Isbel singled, Massey made it 4-1 by pulling his two-out triple into the right-field corner.

Kansas City's Nicky Lopez made his MLB debut in the outfield and had one of the game's biggest plays.

Lopez threw out Cleveland's Amed Rosario trying to go from first to third in the sixth inning. Rosario was initially ruled safe, but the Royals won the replay challenge.

“I knew they might be a little aggressive knowing it was my first time in the outfield in professional baseball,” said Lopez, who has played shortstop, second and third.

Lopez, who hadn't played the outfield in a game since high school, has been shagging flies over the past two weeks so he'd be ready to play if needed.

Royals: OF Edward Oliveras (oblique strain) was placed on the 10-day injured list but mostly to insure Kansas City was at full strength for the series finale. Manager Matt Quartaro called Oliveras' injury “extremely mild.” He was scratched from Saturday's lineup with back tightness.

Guardians: 1B Josh Bell (knee soreness) was held out of the starting lineup after fouling a ball off his knee in Saturday's win. He pinch-hit in the seventh and grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Royals: It won't get any easier for Kansas City, which will return from the break to host AL East-leading Tampa Bay. RHP Alec Marsh (0-2, 7.00 ERA) will start the series opener against Rays RHP Tyler Glasnow (2-3, 4.10).

Guardians: Cleveland will open the unofficial second half on the road in Texas for three games against the Rangers (July 14-16) with RHP Aaron Civale (3-2, 2.56) starting the opener.

AUSTIN, Texas - Four student-athletes representing the Fort Hays
State men's track and field team were named to the 2022-23 College
Sports Communicators Academic All-America Teams, announced Thursday
(June 29) by the national organization. Hayden Albright and Ryan
Stanley were first team Academic All-America selections, while Ethan
Lang earned a spot on the second team and Xavier Robinson was
listed on the third team.


Robinson is a two-time All-MIAA honoree, one-time MIAA champion and
one-time All-American. He competed at three different NCAA DII
national championships while earning 21.5 points at the conference
championships during his career. He ranks first at FHSU during the
DII era in the indoor triple jump. The Hoisington, Kan. native earned
a pair of MIAA Scholar-Athlete Awards in his career at FHSU. Robinson
graduated cum laude with a degree in finance this spring with a GPA
of 3.77.

Hoisington's Xavier Robinson one of four Tigers Named Academic All-Americans

SEATTLE (AP) — Jacob Misiorowski’s first pitch was 101 mph at the top of the strike zone. And from there the Milwaukee prospect just kept throwing faster.

A 21-year-old right-hander with just 10 months of professional experience was the most impressive of the 17 young pitchers in Major League Baseball's annual All-Star Futures Game. He reached 100 mph with 10 of 18 pitches and topped out at 102.4 mph while striking out the side in a one-hit fourth.

“It's what I do. It's what I throw,” the 6-foot-7 pitcher said with a wide smile after the National League's 5-0 win Saturday, both pleased with and embarrassed at the attention.

His senior season at Grain Valley High School in Grain Valley, Missouri, was canceled because of the coronavirus in 2020. Originally intending to go to Oklahoma State, he instead went to Crowder College in Neosho, Missouri, pitched in two games in 2021 and then became a redshirt.

After he went 10-0 with 136 strikeouts in 76 innings for the National Junior College Athletic Association team last year, Milwaukee took him with the 63rd pick in the amateur draft. He signed for a $2.35 million bonus, more than double the $1,131,500 slot value.

Misiorowski began his professional career with two starts for Class A Carolina last September and went 1-1 with a 3.04 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings in nine starts for the Mudcats this year. He earned a promotion to High-A Wisconsin on June 6 and is 1-0 with a 1.83 ERA in five starts with his new club, striking out 24 in 19 2/3 innings.

“Pound the zone and throw the ball as hard as I can,” he said.

Misiorowski thinks his average velocity is 97-98 mph. He's not exactly sure.

“You can't turn around and look at the number that's being flashed up there,” he said.

With his mom, dad, girlfriend and some family friends on hand to watch at T-Mobile Park, Misiorowski struck out Oakland's Lawrence Butler on a curveball that just missed the inside corner. After starting Detroit’s Colt Keith with a 102.4 mph pitch that was outside, Misiorowski gave up a flared single to right on a curve.

Oakland's Tyler Soderstrom, the 26th overall pick in 2020, swung past three straight pitches, and Detroit's Justyn-Henry Malloy also struck out swinging.

“Everyone throws hard now. 102's definitely a little harder than most guys,” Soderstrom said. “He threw the lights out.”

Misiorowski questioned MLB Statcast, which said he threw four fastballs, five curves, seven sinkers and two cutters.

“It's fastball, curveball, slider and a changeup,” he said.

Still growing into his body, Misiorowski is at an age where pitchers can get stronger and throw harder.

“He'll probably maintain around 102,” Soderstrom said. “It's kind of hard to throw harder than that. He's going to have a big career, for sure.”

Players can quickly move from the Futures Game to the big leagues. Elly De La Cruz, Corbin Carroll, Gunnar Henderson, Francisco Álvarez, Anthony Volpe and Jordan Walker were among the players in last year's game at Dodger Stadium.

“You realize that they're right there where you're at, so you could get there, too,” Misiorowski said.

Pitch, Hit, and Run winners announced by Great Bend Rec

Bob Huggins says he never resigned as West Virginia's basketball coach following a drunken-driving arrest and wants his job back, according to a letter from his attorney to the university.

Huggins' Cleveland-based attorney, David A. Campbell, wrote to the university Friday that Huggins “never signed a resignation letter and never communicated a resignation to anyone at WVU,” according to the letter, which was obtained by The Associated Press on Saturday.

The letter threatens a lawsuit if Huggins isn’t reinstated. Huggins’ demands were first reported by West Virginia network MetroNews.

Huggins was charged with driving under the influence in Pittsburgh on June 16. A breath test determined Huggins’ blood-alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit. His resignation was announced by the university the following night. A week later, assistant coach Josh Eilert was promoted to interim head coach for the 2023-24 season.

Campbell’s letter said the university announced Huggins’ resignation “based on a text message from Coach Huggins’ wife” to Steve Uryasz, West Virginia’s deputy athletic director.

The university responded to Campbell in a letter Saturday that read, in part: “We are frankly confused by the allegations within the letter.”

WVU said Huggins met with his players and members of the basketball staff on June 17 “to announce that he would no longer be coaching the team.” It said Huggins “clearly” communicated his resignation and retirement in writing and that “both parties have reasonably relied on that resignation and retirement notification in a number of ways since then.”

The university provided The AP with a copy of a notice sent by Huggins' wife, June, that same day. It read: “Please accept this correspondence as my formal notice of resignation as WVU Head Basketball Coach and as notice of my retirement from West Virginia University, effective immediately.”

The notice was sent from an email address associated with June Huggins, with a signature indicating it was sent via iPhone. It was sent to Uryasz's email address and did not appear to be a text message, as Campbell claimed.

West Virginia athletic director Wren Baker responded an hour later by writing, “We accept your resignation and wish you the best in retirement. We appreciate your many years of dedication to WVU.”

Less than an hour after that, the university released two statements. One announced Huggins' resignation.

The other was titled “A Message from Bob Huggins to the WVU Community” and began, “Today, I have submitted a letter to President Gordon Gee and Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker informing them of my resignation and intention to retire as head men’s basketball coach at West Virginia University effective immediately.”

The resignation was announced a month after the university gave Huggins a three-game suspension for using an anti-gay slur while also denigrating Catholics during a radio interview.

Several of Huggins' players have already entered the transfer portal, and some have found new teams.

Campbell said Huggins’ contract required the coach to send a notice in writing by registered or certified mail to the athletic director and university general counsel.

Despite the threat of a lawsuit, Campbell’s letter said Huggins “does not desire litigation. Rather, he is simply looking for the correction of a clear breach of his employment agreement with WVU.”

The 69-year-old Huggins was the third-winningest coach all-time in Division I with 935 victories, trailing only Mike Krzyzewski of Duke (1,202) and Jim Boeheim of Syracuse (1,015), both of whom are retired.

Unlike the others, Huggins did not win a national title. He took Cincinnati to the Final Four in 1992 and West Virginia in 2010. Huggins entered the Basketball Hall of Fame last September. In 41 seasons, his teams went to 25 NCAA Tournaments and finished ranked in the AP top 10 seven times. The Mountaineers made 11 NCAA Tournament appearances under Huggins.

Hataoka. The 24-year-old from Japan shot a 66 in the wind at Pebble
Beach to take a one-shot lead over Allisen Corpuz. Not only was that
the best score of the championship, Hataoka was nearly nine shots
better than the field average. She went from six shots behind to one
shot ahead in pursuit of his first major. Corpuz caught a bad lie on
her last hole for a bogey and a 71. She will try to join Michelle Wie

Chase Elliott says he can’t rely on repeating last summer’s
success, starting with his home track at Atlanta Motor Speedway, as
his path to NASCAR’s playoffs. Elliott, the 2020 Cup Series
champion, has endured too much adversity in 2023 to assume he’ll
extend his streak of seven consecutive appearances in the playoffs.
Elliott enters the Atlanta race Sunday night only 24th in the Cup

CLEVELAND (AP) — Aaron Civale struck out a season-high nine over seven innings and Josh Bell hit a two-run homer, sending the Cleveland Guardians to a 3-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

Civale (3-2) allowed two hits and did not walk a batter while throwing 100 pitches, 70 for strikes. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 2.56 in his seventh start since missing two months with a strained left oblique.

“Aaron was lights out with nine punchies, only two hits,” Bell said. “When we get an outing like that with our bullpen, we should win. Once we get going and things click, we’ll be all right.”

Trevor Stephan worked the eighth and Emmanuel Clase picked up his 25th save, wrapping up the two-hitter. Cleveland (44-44) won its second straight and improved to .500 for the first time since April 28, when it was 13-13.

“The last couple of times out, Aaron is commanding so well and he’s been throwing strikes, it’s fun to watch,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said. “He was working so fast tonight. Heck, everybody was.”

The game was completed in 1 hour and 51 minutes, making it the shortest nine-inning contest in the history of Progressive Field, which opened in 1994.

Bell’s blast onto the home run porch in left came off Royals starter Daniel Lynch (2-4) and extended the Guardians’ lead to 3-0 in the fourth. Josh Naylor singled home Amed Rosario in the first, then singled and scored on Bell’s ninth homer of the year.

Naylor and Bell are responsible for 35.7% of Cleveland’s RBIs, the most by a duo in the majors. Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor of the Mets are second at 30.7%.

Bobby Witt Jr. doubled in the fourth, MJ Melendez doubled in the fifth and Maikel Garcia walked in the ninth for Kansas City’s only baserunners.

“I’m trying to make sure that I’m focused and have conviction with each pitch,” Civale said. “After my injuries the past few years, I need to give it my best effort because I know I have to make the most of it.”

The Royals are 0-5 on their seven-game trip, totaling 26 hits while being outscored 31-8. Lynch gave up three runs and six hits in six innings.

Civale struck out Salvador Perez and Nick Pratto in all six of their plate appearances. Pratto was caught looking all three times, the last of which caused his frustration to surface. He was ejected by plate umpire Brennan Miller.

“Nick took it a little too far, but I understand because our guys aren’t getting results,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “Sometimes, it feels like it’s you against the world and I think that’s what’s happening.”

Royals third baseman Maikel Garcia fouled a pitch off the right side of his face in the fourth, but remained in the game.

Guardians C Bo Naylor received one-on-one instruction from hitting coach Chris Valaika before the game and was not in the lineup.

The rookie and younger brother of Josh Naylor is batting .149 with 18 strikeouts in 47 at-bats since he was recalled on June 17 from Triple-A Columbus.

UNDATED (AP) — The rapidly expanding landscape of nonprofit, donor-backed collectives paying college athletes to promote charities has been hit with a potentially seismic disruption.

A recent 12-page memo from the Internal Revenue Service determined that, in many cases, such collectives may not qualify as tax-exempt if their main purpose is paying players instead of supporting charitable works.

If the collectives aren’t tax-exempt, the donations they collect that are used to pay quarterbacks, point guards and pitchers may not be, either.

“There’s a high likelihood we will cease operations, within the next period of months,” said Gary Marcinick, founder of the Cohension Foundation, a collective formed to connect Ohio State athletes with charities for name, image and likeness (NIL) promotional deals. “In our space, we are donor driven …. It’s not only a game changer, it’s a game ender, I think, in the vast majority of cases.”

The collectives were born out of the massive change that hit college sports in 2021 when athletes were allowed to earn money in ways that had been prohibited for decades.

Some collectives — and there are dozens of them — are set up as for-profit entities that help connect athletes with endorsement deals as the new market swelled into the millions and NIL became a recruiting tool. Opendorse, a company that partners with schools to help initiate, track and monitor NIL deals, projected nearly $1.2 billion flowing through the industry in 2023.

The nonprofit model was an attractive option for some donors and entrepreneurs, who tout such things as appearances at sports camps and fund-raisers and social media promotions for select charities. There are an estimated 80 such collectives.

Charities gained exposure from star athletes who earned money. And donors got the promise of a tax-deductible donation.

According to the IRS, those collectives already granted tax-exempt status don’t lose it as a result of the June 9 memo. But it does lay out new guidelines for how they are expected to operate if they want to keep it.

“These collectives may face future examinations or enforcement action by the IRS,” the agency said without elaboration.

“The big question is whether this memo will spook donors enough that they will no longer want to donate to nonprofit collectives, and schools enough that they tell donors not to donate to them,” said Mit Winter, a sports law attorney in Kansas City, Missouri, who tracks issues in the college athlete marketplace.

Congress has also been watching. A bipartisan bill filed in 2022 would limit tax deductions for bankrolling nonprofit NIL collectives, but it has yet to pass.

The IRS was granting tax-exempt status to collectives for more than a year before issuing the memo that determined, in many cases, paying players isn’t merely incidental to the charitable cause but “is the very justification for the organization’s existence.”

“The only question was to what extent would the IRS would put its thumb on the scales. It was pretty clear many of these organizations were pushing the boundaries,” said Brian Mittendorf, an accounting professor at Ohio State with a concentration on nonprofits.

“The IRS memo put a line in the sand,” Mittendorf said. “Paying college athletes is not a charitable purpose. Paying an athlete and doing some charitable work on the side, is also not a charitable purpose.”

The IRS warning should not have come as a surprise, said Jason Belzer, founder of Student Athlete NIL, which operates several commercial collectives for schools across the country.

“All of these nonprofits were paid solely for paying student athletes, not for doing the charitable work,” Belzer said. “That’s racketeering.”

The NCAA has raised concerns about the collectives, but the federal government is a different story when it comes to enforcing rules that have been somewhat murky when it comes to athlete compensation.

“The IRS,” Belzer said, “is not the NCAA.”

Eventually, annual financial disclosures required by state and federal regulators will show how much money is collected, spent and to whom. Because these organizations are so new, many of those records haven’t been filed yet.

Marcinick said Cohesion has partnered nearly 80 Buckeyes athletes from multiple sports for NIL deals totaling more than $1.5 million. Partner charities include the Ronald McDonald House, Special Olympics, an area food bank and drug and emotional abuse support groups.

“Unfortunately, there are bad actors out there. They have used (non-profit status) as a way to harvest donations that have nothing to do with a charitable purpose,” Marcinick said. “We’re a good actor …We’re paying the price for others.”

On June 9, Ohio State’s all-Big Ten defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau hosted a football camp for about 80 children backed by the Boys &amp; Girls Club of Central Ohio and the Lindy Infante Foundation, which helps local nonprofits create and improve youth sports programs.

“He talked to the kids, went to every station, signed autographs,” said foundation President Stephanie Infante, calling the IRS memo potentially “devastating” if it effectively ends partnerships like that one.

“It was such a great day and great event,” Infante said. “Nonprofits struggle as it is. To be able to interact and get involved with athletes who are reaching out … It’s been such a great opportunity for athletes to get involved in their community.”

Not everyone is ready to back out of the marketplace.

The Texas One Fund, a multi-pronged collective that includes the Horns With Heart program and its promise of $50,000 for scholarship offensive linemen, intends to keep doing business as usual. The Texas One Fund has long had a disclaimer that a donation could be tax deductable but advice should be sought from a tax attorney.

Texas One Fund will show any nervous donors the group’s March 2022 IRS letter granting nonprofit status, said Patrick Smith, the collective’s president.

“All we can do is continue to perform the mission of our (non-profit),” he said. “If that whole thing is disallowed. It would be sad for the charities we are helping out.”

Texas One Fund also has a new connection with the university that should help keep the money flowing in. Starting July 1, donors can earn loyalty points with the school-affiliated Longhorn Foundation for season-ticket selections and upgrades.

“I don’t know what effect the memo will have on NIL giving,” Smith said. “Whether it’s a (nonprofit) or not, money is still going to flow to college athletes.”

IRS throws a chill into collectives paying college athletes while claiming nonprofit status

NEW YORK (AP) — Owners of teams in two of the Oakland Athletics' former cities will help evaluate whether the franchise should move to Las Vegas.

Philadelphia Phillies chief executive officer John Middleton and Kansas City Royals CEO John Sherman will serve on Major League Baseball's relocation committee, a person familiar with their appointment told The Associated Press on Friday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement was made.

They join Milwaukee Brewers chairman Mark Attanasio, picked last month by baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred to chair the relocation committee. That group will evaluate the team's application, define the new operating territory and television territory, then make a recommendation to Manfred and the eight-man executive council. The council formulates a recommendation to all 30 clubs, which must approve the move by at least three-quarters vote.

There has been no announced timetable for MLB to consider a relocation.

Oakland's lease at the Coliseum expires after the 2024 season and the A's, who have the worst record, lowest attendance and smallest payroll in the major leagues, say they hope to move to a new ballpark in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas would become the fourth home for a franchise that started in Philadelphia from 1901-54, moved to Kansas City for 13 seasons and arrived in Oakland for 1968.

Nevada's Legislature approved providing $380 million in public financing for a proposed $1.5 billion, 30,000-seat ballpark with a retractable roof on the Tropicana hotel site of the Las Vegas Strip. The new venue would be close to Allegiant Stadium, where the NFL’s Oakland Raiders moved to in 2020, and T-Mobile Arena, where the current Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights started play in 2017 as an expansion team.

Since the Washington Senators became the Texas Rangers for 1972, the only team to relocate has been the Montreal Expos, who became the Washington Nationals in 2005.
