Great Bend senior Morgan Beckwith closed out her prep cross country career strong with a 29th-place performance at the Class 5A State Championships in October. Wednesday, she signed a letter of intent to continue her running career at Fort Hays State University next year.

Beckwith finished in 21:43 and ran 67th at the state meet at Rim Rock Farm her junior year. She cut her 5K time to 20:12.17 for a personal best at Lake Barton at the regional meet this October, then followed that up with a 20:06 and the 29th-place finish at Rim Rock this year.

Beckwith debuted strong as a freshman, finishing 30th at the state championships, held in Augusta that year, in 20:44. She placed seventh in the 3200m run at last May's regional track meet in Maize to miss state by three spots.

Great Bend's Beckwith inks with Fort Hays State

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs could be getting injured linebacker Nick Bolton back just in time after they lost his replacement, Drue Tranquill, and several other key players to injuries during last week's loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Tranquill was still in the concussion protocol on Wednesday, when the Chiefs resumed preparation for Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills.

But coach Andy Reid said that Bolton would continue to practice after they opened the 21-day window in which they must decide whether to activate him or put him on season-ending injured reserve.

Bolton has been out since having surgery for a dislocated wrist sustained during a Week 7 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Nick is a great player, a significant impact player,” Chiefs defensive end Mike Danna said. “Just having his presence back there is going to be huge for us.”

The Chiefs also lost starting safety Bryan Cook to what appeared to be a significant ankle injury in Green Bay, though most of the tests on it have revealed encouraging results. Reid called it “a sprain” and said that he was still being evaluated.

Mike Edwards and rookie Chamarri Conner are likely to replace Cook in the lineup.

On the opposite side of the ball, the Chiefs are preparing to play without left tackle Donovan Smith because of a neck stinger, and they are unsure whether running back Isiah Pacheco will be available because of a bruised shoulder.

Pacheco ran 18 times for 110 yards and a touchdown against the Packers. If he is unable to play against the Bills, the Chiefs would lean on Clyde Edwards-Helaire and potentially Jerick McKinnon, who returned to practice Wednesday after a groin injury.

Wanya Morris, a third-round pick in April's draft, played well in Smith's place against the Packers. He had been earning a few spot reps even before the injury, and that left him prepared to take over when Smith had to leave the game.

“Your preparation should never change,” Morris said Wednesday. “I just have to make sure I'm focused on the details.”

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes certainly has faith in his backup blindside protector.

“He's played well. If you watch the tape, he's done a great job in the run game and the pass game,” Mahomes said, “and I think now it's about getting him prepared for a great defensive line. As far as playing the position, he's done a good job.”

domestic violence against the mother of his children, who is

NASHVILLE, Tenn.
(AP) — The Kansas City Royals have swapped pitchers with the
Astros, sending right-hander Dylan Coleman to Houston in exchange for
minor league right-hander Carlos Mateo. The Royals announced the
trade Wednesday during the winter meetings. Mateo puts the Royals’
reserve list at 39. He turns 20 on Dec. 16. Mateo played seven games
in the Gulf Coast League this year where he struck out 12 in 8 2/3
innings. Mateo made his professional debut with the Dominican Summer
League Astros Orange in 2022. Coleman is 27 and played with Kansas
City over parts of three seasons.

NEW YORK (AP) —
The New York Yankees have acquired All-Star slugger Juan Soto in a
blockbuster trade with the cost-cutting San Diego Padres. San Diego
received right-handed pitchers Michael King, Jhony Brito, Randy
Vásquez and Drew Thorpe along with catcher Kyle Higashioka. In
addition to Soto, the Yankees get Gold Glove center fielder Trent
Grisham. It’s the second blockbuster deal involving the 25-year-old
Soto in less than two years. The three-time All-Star has one season
of team control left and is likely to get a salary around $32 million
after batting .275 with 35 homers, 109 RBIs and a .930 OPS in his
only full season with the Padres. San Diego acquired Soto from
Washington on Aug. 2, 2022, after he turned down a $440 million,
15-year offer from the Nationals.

PHOENIX (AP) — The
Arizona Diamondbacks and pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez have agreed to an
$80 million, four-year contract, according to a person with direct
knowledge of the deal. The person spoke to The Associated Press on
condition of anonymity Wednesday night because the team had not
announced the move. Rodriguez gives the National League champions
another quality starter for their rotation. The 30-year-old
left-hander spent the past two seasons with the Detroit Tigers and
went 13-9 with a 3.30 ERA in 2023. He spent his first six seasons
with the Boston Red Sox and had his best year in 2019, going 19-6
with a 3.81 ERA in 34 starts.

MILWAUKEE (AP) —
Tyler Kolek had 28 points, eight rebounds and six assists as No. 8
Marquette drubbed No. 12 Texas 86-65 in the Big East-Big 12 Battle.

five arenas: the courts, Congress, state legislatures, conferences
and the NCAA. Some in college sports wonder how Baker's proposal will
be received by those who believe college athletes should have
employee status and others worry if schools will sponsor fewer teams.

a new proposal by the head of the largest college sports governing
body in the United States aims to change that. NCAA President Charlie
Baker earlier this week sent a letter to Division I members

at least $30,000 each in a trust fund. Baker’s idea is an
aggressive first step toward what could be a revolutionary change.

count of wire fraud and one count of illegal monetary transaction in
documents filed in U.S. District Court in Jacksonville. He is accused
of using the money to buy vehicles, a condominium, a designer watch,
cryptocurrency and other items.

A statement from K-State Athletic Director Gene Taylor released late Wednesday said, “We have heard the concerns and the questions from K-State fans and friends around Nae’Qwan Tomlin’s indefinite suspension from the men’s basketball team."

“Situations like these are difficult. We know you want answers, but federal privacy laws largely prohibit the University and K-State Athletics from publicly discussing specific information around circumstances like this. Those laws are in place to protect our student-athletes, and more specifically in this instance, to protect Nae’Qwan as he is working through a process designed to support him and lift him out of a difficult time."

"Allowing for that space and time is critical, but in today’s digital age, that unfortunately can lead to the spread of rumors and misinformation — and in this case, much of the information on social media is incorrect."

“I have been monitoring this situation and overseeing Nae’Qwan’s suspension with Coach Tang’s involvement. While we cannot share the specifics that have led to this outcome due to the reasons stated above, K-State Athletics can now share that Nae’Qwan Tomlin will no longer be able to continue with the K-State men’s basketball team."

"This decision was not made lightly by me, but it is the decision warranted by the circumstances that brought it to bear," according to Taylor.

Just before 2a.m. October 29, <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/43e99053-dc8f-48ea-9281-3a6e500b27d7">police arrested 22-year-old Nae'Qwan Tommy Nicholas Tomlin at Tubby's Sports Bar</a>, 1127 Moro Street in Manhattan, according to the <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/583e809f-4962-48ec-a53e-f6b724db00bb">Riley County Police Department arrest report</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tomlin&nbsp;averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds and started all 36 games for the Wildcats last season.

The Kansas Wesleyan basketball teams will hit the road tonight for the first of two final regular season games in 2023.

The Coyotes will square off with Ottawa on Tuesday evening before returning to Salina to face Saint Mary on Saturday.

The Series On the women's side the Coyotes have won eight of the last ten meetings with Ottawa. KWU won both regular season match-ups last season, 72-55 on December 7 at home; and 70-68 on February 4 in Ottawa. Ottawa won the KCAC quarterfinal match-up 74-70. KWU is 46-45 all-time against Ottawa.

KWU Basketball Travels to Ottawa for Doubleheader on KINA

The Panther swimmers returned to the friendly confines of Barton Community College Tuesday. Several Great Bend swimmers cracked the top-10 in their respective events. Garden City won the invited with 476 points, followed by Hutchinson with 397 points, Hays with 351 points, and Great Bend with 212 points.

Junior Jordan Sander placed fourth in the 500 free in 7:36.22 to miss the bronze by 28 seconds. Hutchinson's Logan Most, a 16th-place finisher at state, won the race by 49 seconds in 5:59. Great Bend senior Andrew McQuade placed fifth in 7:51.34. McQuade also placed seventh in the 200 free in 2:48.09, 25 seconds from the bronze. 

Senior Joshua Sharpe had a fourth-place finish in the 100 back in 1:25.68, missing the bronze in a photo finish by just 0.2 seconds. Freshman Kale Mermis placed 10th in 1:34.78.

The 400 free relay team of Sander, Joshua Sharpe, Mermis, and junior AJ Thurman, placed sixth in 5:22.24, 36 seconds behind the bronze winners from Hays. The 200 free relay of McQuade, seniors Adam Hall and Kasey Kennedy, and junior Matthew Williams finished fourth in 1:54.30, just 1.14 seconds behind third-place Garden City. 

Kennedy finished fifth in the 50 free in 25.92 to miss the bronze by just half a second. Hall hit the wall in 26.97 for 10th. Williams placed seventh in the 100 breast in 1:29.03, just nine seconds behind the bronze. Mermis placed seventh in the 100 butterfly in 1:43.33, 20 seconds off the bronze. Hall finished ninth in the 100 free in 1:05.20. Four swimmers finished under a minute in that race.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self is always reluctant to describe a game as a “trap," because he doesn't believe it gives the opposition the credit it deserves — especially when the opponent pushes the Jayhawks right down to the wire.

Kevin McCullar Jr. had a career-high 25 points, KJ Adams scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, and the Jayhawks needed both of them to make some big plays down the stretch to hold on for a scrappy 88-69 win over the Roos.

The Jayhawks were coming off a thrilling, down-to-the wire win over fifth-ranked UConn on Friday night, one made even more emotionally draining by the recent passing of Adams’ mother, Yvonne. And they have another high-profile showdown coming up Saturday, when their longtime and bitter rival Missouri returns to Allen Fieldhouse.

“We executed when we needed to and did the things we need to do to win," Self said, "and pull ahead at the end, so there were some positive takeaways from it. But we have to be a heck of a lot better than we were tonight.”

Hunter Dickinson added 14 and 11 rebounds for the Jayhawks (8-1), who led by eight with 3 1/2 minutes left before scoring 10 straight to put the game away. Johnny Furphy had a couple of late baskets and finished with 10 points.

“We had to come out and handle business,” said McCullar, who also had six rebounds and five assists. “Take care of the ball, play the right way, get great shots. We had to get stops late in the game. That's what we ended up doing.”

Cameron Faas and Khristion Courseault scored 18 points apiece to lead the Roos (6-3). Anderson Kopp had 15.

“They've got a great program, and we have a great program, but we are just on different levels,” Roos coach Marvin Menzies said. "We’ve been building and they’ve been built.”

The Jayhawks initially looked as if they carried the momentum from their win over the Huskies into Tuesday night. They opened on a 14-4 run, followed with a 15-3 charge fueled by easy transition buckets, and they eventually built a 31-11 lead.

Undaunted, the Roos responded by outscoring their mighty neighbor to the west 19-14 heading to the break, then kept coming in the second half. And the most fight Kansas showed for long stretches came from Dickinson, their 7-foot-2 standout, when he had enough of Allen David Mukeba leaning on him and gave the Roos' forward a two-handed shove to the floor.

The Jayhawks eventually pushed their lead to 75-57 with just under five minutes left, but the Roos scored 10 unanswered points on just three trips down the floor, forcing Self to call two timeouts in rapid succession.

It was after the second one that Kansas scored 10 consecutive points to lock up the win.

“We totally screwed up the game,” Self said. “I think they went on a 10-0 run in like, 45 seconds or something, but we totally screwed that up, and put them in a position where they could definitely make us sweat.”

Kansas City is 0-28 against ranked opponents and winless in nine tries against the Jayhawks, but it should be emboldened by playing one of the nation's top teams tight most of the game when Summit League play begins.

Kansas has shown a troubling propensity for playing down to the opposition this season. The Jayhawks similarly struggled to a 71-63 win over Eastern Illinois last week, when they were coming off the Maui Invitational with UConn on the horizon.

Kansas City plays Lindenwood, which moved up to Division I last year, on Saturday.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Arthur Kaluma scored 26 points, Tylor Perry hit a step-back 3-pointer to cap the scoring with 3.9 seconds left and Kansas State beat Villanova 72-71 in overtime Tuesday night in the Big 12/BIG EAST Battle.

Kansas State (7-2) has won four games in the row, the last three in OT.

Jordan Longino kicked it out to Eric Dixon for a wide-open 3-pointer to give Villanova a four-point lead with 1:20 to play. David N'Guessar made a layup on the other end 32 seconds later before Longino missed a contested pull-up jumper with 25 seconds remaining. Tylor Perry — who had been 1 of 9 from behind the arc to that point — hit a step-back 3 to make it 72-71.

Longino, who led Villanova with 16 points, tried to get to the basket but time expired before he got off a shot. TJ Bamba scored 15 points and Burton added 12 points and 11 rebounds — his second double-double this season. Dixon finished with 11 points and Hakim Hart 10.

Kaluma made 10 of 13 from the field, grabbed nine rebounds and had four assists for Kansas State and Cam Carter scored 10 of his 16 in the second half. Perry had 10 points, on 4-of-12 shooting, with six assists for Kansas State.

Burton hit two free throws early in overtime to make it 65-63 and give Villanova (6-4) its first lead since midway through the first half.

NCAA President Charlie Baker says he wants the association to create
a new tier of Division I athletics where highly resourced schools
would be required to offer at least half their athletes a payment of
at least $30,000 per year. Baker also proposed allowing all Division
I schools to offer unlimited educational benefits and enter into
name, image and likeness partnerships with athletes. Baker sent a
letter to more than 350 Division I schools. He says the disparity in
resources between the wealthiest schools and other D-I members is
standing in the way of reforming college athletics.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says he sees football becoming a
global sport within the next decade and that his league is at the
forefront of that effort. That includes adding another international
market next year for the regular-season schedule. Brazil and Spain

officials from Las Vegas teams and events to promote the Super Bowl,
which will be played at Allegiant Stadium on Feb. 11. He said the
league’s championship game will return to Las Vegas many times

injuries, his future in Anaheim remains an annual topic of debate due

No. 19 North Carolina State to face Kansas State in Pop-Tarts Bowl

LAS VEGAS (AP) — NCAA President Charlie Baker announced Tuesday that he wants the organization to create a new tier of Division I athletics where schools with the most resources can offer unlimited educational benefits, enter into name, image and likeness partnerships with athletes and directly pay them through a trust fund.

In a letter sent to more than 350 Division I schools, Baker said the disparity in resources between the wealthiest schools in the Football Bowl Subdivision and other DI members — along with the hundreds of Division II and III schools — is creating “a new series of challenges.”

“The challenges are competitive as well as financial and are complicated further by the intersection of name, image and likeness opportunities for student-athletes and the arrival of the Transfer Portal,” Baker wrote.

Division I is currently divided into the FBS and FCS (Football Championship Subdivision). Baker's proposal is aimed at creating a new subdivision where schools in the so-called Power Five conferences — the Big Ten, Southeastern Conference, Big 12, Atlantic Coast Conference and Pac-12 — can operate.

Conference realignment starting in 2024 will move the Pac-12 out of that group.

Baker noted that athletic budgets in Division I range from $5 million and $250 million annually, with 59 schools spending over $100 million annually and another 32 spending over $50 million. He said 259 Division I schools, however, spend less than $50 million on their athletic programs.

Baker said the difference in the way schools that participate in revenue-generating college sports operate and the vast majority of college sports is complicating attempts to modernize the collegiate sports model.

“The contextual environment is equally challenging, as the courts and other public entities continue to debate reform measures that in many cases would seriously damage parts or all of college athletics,” he wrote.

Baker and college sports leaders have been pleading with Congress to help the NCAA with a federal law to regulate the way athletes can be paid for NIL deals. Baker, a former Massachusetts governor, took over the NCAA job in March.

The NCAA is also facing a new round of legal threats that could force its members to share some of the billions in revenue generated by major college football and basketball, along with giving athletes employees status. One antitrust case working its way through federal court could cost the NCAA billions in damages.

Baker called on NCAA member schools to create a framework to make what he called “fundamental changes.”

“First, we should make it possible for all Division I colleges and universities to offer student-athletes any level of enhanced educational benefits they deem appropriate. Second, rules should change for any Division I school, at their choice, to enter into name, image and likeness licensing opportunities with their student-athletes,” he wrote. “These two changes will enhance the financial opportunities available to all Division I student-athletes.”

Baker said the changes would help level the playing field between men's and women's athletics by forcing schools to abide by gender equity regulations as they invest.

He said schools in a new tier of Division I should be allowed, while staying compliant with Title IX, to “invest at least $30,000 per year into an enhanced educational trust fund for at least half of the institution’s eligible student-athletes.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs could put the blame for their loss in Green Bay on Sunday night on a whole lot of people.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love, who outplayed league MVP Patrick Mahomes. The Green Bay wide receivers, who made all the plays that Kansas City's group has failed to make so much of the season.

And yes, the officials, whose questionable decisions in the final few minutes — including two pass interference penalties that were not called — might very well have altered the outcome.

Yet the Chiefs,&nbsp;whose 27-19 loss&nbsp;was their third in the past five weeks, have enough championship pedigree to carry most of the blame on their own shoulders.

Mahomes threw an interception late in the game, they still were flagged five times for 50 yards as penalties continued to be a problem, and they went just 2 for 4 when they reached the red zone.

Fix those problems&nbsp;and those questionable decisions by referee Brad Allen's crew might not have made a difference.

“You try to learn from it, learn from your mistakes and get better. That’s all you can do. That’s win or lose,” said Mahomes, who was just 21 of 33 for 210 yards with a touchdown and that pick.

“We haven’t dealt with a ton of losing here, but everything is out in front of you. We can still win a division, but it’s going to take us getting better and better each and every week.”

Yet as much as Mahomes wanted to immediately turn his attention to next Sunday's game against Buffalo, it is almost impossible not to reflect on just how costly the Chiefs' loss in Green Bay turned out to be Sunday night.

First, there are the standings: Kansas City is 8-4 and a game behind Baltimore and Miami, and a half-game behind Jacksonville as it prepared to play Cincinnati on Monday night, which means the Chiefs have ground to make up for the No. 1 seed.

Second, there were the injuries: The Chiefs lost linebacker Drue Tranquill to a concussion. He already was replacing the injured Nick Bolton, while starting safety Bryan Cook had to be carted off the field with an ankle injury.

“We understand everything we want is still ahead of us,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said. "I got the five-minute rule: You've got five minutes to complain, you’ve got five minutes to get it all out. We’ve got an important game coming next week to Arrowhead, so watch film, see what we can get better at and let’s take this week in practice.”

The Chiefs ran for 148 yards, and Isiah Pacheco had 18 carries for 110 and a score before he got thrown out of the game for throwing a punch. If the Chiefs are ever going to loosen up opposing defenses downfield, they need to prove they can run the ball. They have only topped 100 yards as a team twice in the past eight games.

Turnovers and penalties. The ability of wide receivers to get open. Basically, the same things Kansas City has struggled with going back to a season-opening loss to Detroit. Mahomes is on pace to throw 14 interceptions, the most of his career, while his QB rating is tracking to be the worst of his six years as a starter.

LB Jack Cochrane, a former undrafted free agent from FCS school South Dakota, was thrown into the spotlight when Tranquill — already the backup at their position — was placed in the concussion protocol. Cochrane responded with seven tackles, including two for a loss, and did an admirable job keeping the defense properly lined up.

The Chiefs hoped WR Skyy Moore would take a step forward in Year 2 after coming on strong down the stretch of his rookie season. Instead, Moore had one catch for 5 yards Sunday night, ran the route on which Mahomes was picked, and has offered very little help on offense or special teams all season.

The injuries to Tranquill and Cook could keep them out for a while, but the Chiefs think Bolton could return this week, and that would at least help one of their positions. Bolton (wrist surgery) practiced last week, but remained on injured reserve.

0 — The number of misses K Harrison Butker has this season. The only kickers with perfect regular seasons on PATs and field goals are Gary Anderson in 1998 and Mike Vanderjagt in 2003. Butker has made 23 consecutive field goals, tying his own club record set in 2017, and his 13 games without a missed field goal is tied for the Chiefs record.

The Chiefs may be struggling but they are far from desperate. That might better describe the Bills, who visit Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday coming off a bye. They are 6-6 and outside the playoffs with five games left in the regular season.

time the Huskies were ranked this low was the second poll of the

which were negative. Lawrence completed 22 of 29 passes for 259 yards

(AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs once again pointed at themselves for
their 27-19 loss at Green Bay on Sunday night. Patrick Mahomes threw
another interception in crunch time, the Chiefs were again penalized
at inopportune moments, and they were just 2 for 4 in the red zone
against the Packers. Throw in some questionable decisions by referee
Brad Allen's crew and the Chiefs lost for the third time in the past
five weeks. Now, the defending Super Bowl champs are a game behind
Baltimore and Miami, and a half-game behind Jacksonville as it
prepared to play Cincinnati on Monday night, in the race for the No.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett is out indefinitely
after undergoing surgery for a high right ankle sprain. Pickett had
the procedure done less than 24 hours after a 24-10 loss to Arizona.
Pickett was injured in the second quarter when Cardinals defensive
end Jonathan Ledbetter fell on his at the end of a 2-yard scramble.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Mitch Trubisky will start for
Pittsburgh when the Steelers host New England on Thursday.
