NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees slugger Aaron Judge hit his 50th homer of the season on Sunday, connecting in the first inning against the Colorado Rockies. Then he connected for No. 51 in the seventh in a 10-3 victory. Judge drove a 0-2 changeup from Austin Gomber into the visiting bullpen in left-center to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. It was his 18th homer in the first this season, matching Alex Rodriguez in 2001 for the major league record. Judge joined Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire and Babe Ruth as the only players in major league history with three 50-homer seasons. He also became the first player with three 50-homer seasons in the first nine years of his career.
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) — Lydia Ko covered her face with her hands and cried tears of joy. An Olympic gold medal. Entry into the Hall of Fame. And now another major championship title — at the home of golf, no less. Summers don’t come much better than that. Ko completed what she described as a “Cinderella-like story” by breaking free from a logjam of world-class talent to win the Women’s British Open by two strokes at St. Andrews on Sunday, securing a third major title — and a first in eight years. Just two weeks ago, the 27-year-old New Zealander took gold at the Olympic Games in Paris.
DENVER (AP) — Zach Wilson and Jarrett Stidham both made strong closing cases for surviving roster cuts after losing out to rookie Bo Nix in the Denver Broncos’ latest quarterback competition. Stidham directed an efficient touchdown drive Sunday in his only possession and Wilson drove Denver on four scoring drives as the Broncos wrapped up a perfect preseason with a 38-12 walloping of the Arizona Cardinals. In his most extensive action this summer, Wilson jumpstarted a touchdown drive with a 21-yard scramble and threw a 46-yard TD on a frozen rope of a pass to Brandon Johnson with a beaten defensive back cutting across his path and he sped into the end zone.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — Lathan Norton was sick and didn’t play on Saturday at the Little League World Series. But on Sunday he scored the winning run in the championship. Lathan raced home from second base on an overthrow at first as Lake Mary, Florida, rallied to beat Taiwan 2-1 in eight innings and claim the title. Taiwan clung to a 1-0 lead from the first inning until Florida’s last at-bat. The Southeast region representatives outhit Taiwan and had a runner on third in three separate innings, but couldn’t get a run across.
CHORZOW, Poland (AP) — Armand Duplantis has broken the world record in the pole vault again, this time clearing 6.26 meters in a Diamond League meet in Poland on Sunday. Duplantis, the Louisiana-born 24-year-old who competes for his mother’s native Sweden, added another centimeter to his world record in Chorzow. It’s the third time this year that he has set a world record. He did so in the recent Olympic Games in Paris, clearing 6.25 meters after clinching the gold medal. Duplantis, who is widely known as “Mondo,” has now broken the world record 10 times in his career — each time by one centimeter.
