The Lady Panther volleyball team continued its hot streak to open the 2024 season with a pair of wins in Dodge City Tuesday. Great Bend opened with a 25-7, 25-18 win against Guymon (Okla.), then defeated the host Red Demons 25-11, 25-23.
The Lady Panthers saw a balanced attack against Guymon with freshman Mikala Minton leading the offense with eight kills. Senior Cassie Ellegood added six kills, and senior Kara Feist and sophomore Kya Behr each put down five balls. Great Bend served up 11 aces in the win, led by three from senior Adelyn Irwin and two each from Ellegood, Behr, and junior Ava Kaiser. Behr finished with 23 of the team's 27 assists. Feist and freshman Micah Ellegood led the defense at the net with a pair of blocks each. Kaiser paced the back row with six digs, followed by four from sophomore Alex Mayers.
Cassie Ellegood had a big finale at the net with 10 kills against Dodge City. Behr and Feist combined for 13 more kills. Behr had two of the team's four ace serves in the match and served up 19 assists. Feist did her work defensively at the net with three blocks, followed by two from Cassie Ellegood. Minton had a busy match in the back row with 10 digs, followed by nine from Mayers, six from Kaiser, and five from Behr.
Great Bend moves to 4-0 on the season with the last three wins coming in straight sets. The Lady Panthers will see tough competition Saturday in the Riley County tournament.
