Competing for the first time in over two-months, the Barton Community College women's bowling team opened the 2024 portion of the season with hardware following its' third place and runner-up finishes at the SWIBC V and SWIBC VI held this past weekend at the Plano Super Bowl in Plano, TX.

Entered as the lone two-year program, the Cougars opened the weekend with a third place outing in the SWIBC V consisting of five team games and 10 baker rounds for a 5,989-pin count. Returning 12-hours later for Sunday's SWIBC VI which featured seven individual games, Barton bettered their placing with a runner-up finish destroying 6,308 pins edging out third place Texas A&amp;M University's 5,888.

Claiming the team title both days was Division I powerhouse Wichita State University carding team scores of 7,295 and 7,597.

Chailyn Scott guided the Cougars individually turning in the 8th best score in the 46-participant field knocking down 992 pins. Averaging a team best 198.4 single game score over her five rolled games, the freshman tallied the highest game on the squad with a fifth round 232 following her fourth game 218.

Joining Scott inside the top-10 was Jasmine Bridges' 10th place 904 pin count as the freshman turned in a pair of 200-plus games with an opening 213 and fourth game 204 total for a 180.8 average.

Fielding a second team, Barton's junior varsity group fabricated a pair of top-20 performances led by Charlee Bitler's 17th placing 838 pin accumulation and Cassidy Eschliman's 19th best total of 824.

Olivia Oliver's 25th finish of 775 led a five pack of Cougars with Morgan Kolanek 26th (767), Allyson Heidenreich 27th (753), Jaden Rabe 28th (746) and Alexandra Coykendall's 29th (744).

Rolling the same lineup out for Sunday's SWIBC VI, Oliver paced Barton earning a 9th place performance destroying 1,412 pins over seven rolled games. Averaging 201.7 per 10-frames, Oliver topped the 200-mark in three of her seven games tossed with scores of 224, 222 and 221.

Heidenreich rounded out the Cougars' top-10 placings with the 10th highest pin mark 1,325. The sophomore posted a pair of 200-plus scores tying Oliver for the Cougars highest individual 224 game.

For the second consecutive day, Bridges finished inside the top-15 bookending the 13th highest pin accumulation of 1,299 for Barton's lone top-15 placer over the two days of competition.

Concluding her home state return, Kolanek powered the Cougars JV team with a 17th place 1,199 seven game total besting her prior day finish by nine spots.

Cassidy Goans made the biggest improvement for the JV squad finishing 13-spots higher earning a 22nd placing with a pin count 1,143.

The Cougars will have a week off before traveling east for the Wildcat Challenge held February 3rd-4th at the Royal Crest Lanes in Lawrence, KS.

Barton Women's Bowling captures pair of top-3 finishes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Everyone seems to keep waiting for the problems that have plagued the Kansas City Chiefs all season to be their downfall.

The dropped passes. The turnovers. The penalties.

But one thing has yet to fail them: their defense. It showed up again in Sunday night's 27-24 victory in Buffalo, which sent the Chiefs to their sixth consecutive AFC championship game. It kept the Bills out of the end zone in the closing minutes and, when Tyler Bass missed a potential tying field goal wide right, Kansas City was on to the next round in Baltimore.

"The defense really picked it up that second half, and really put it down, even to the last drive where they had to kick that field goal,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday. “I thought that was big. They said: ‘Enough is enough. We can’t let them score.'”

The defense has said that a lot this season.

The Chiefs have held their opponent to 24 points or fewer in 18 of 19 games, the best defensive run since the famed “Legion of Boom” in Seattle during the 2013 season. That group, led by Bobby Wagner, Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman, led the league in points, yards and just about every other relevant defensive statistic, and proceeded to stuff the Broncos in the Super Bowl.

“For three quarters offensively, we were moving the ball up and down the field, but we got shut down in the fourth quarter,” said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has never lost in the divisional round. “I went over to the defense and told them: ‘Y’all shut it down and we’ll win this football game. We’ll get to the AFC championship game.”

The Chiefs still had issues Sunday night — Mecole Hardman fumbled a ball out of the end zone for a late touchback, which could have cost dearly. But with their defense playing so well, and just two wins away from another Super Bowl ring, perhaps they simply can overcome the problems that have followed Kansas City throughout the season.

“Nothing comes easy, man,” said defensive tackle Chris Jones, who could be headed to free agency and would love a third ring before that happens. “It took a lot of commitment from a lot of guys in order to be successful.”

Harrison Butker has been as automatic as kickers can be this season. He's made 14 straight field goals, going 6 for 6 in two playoff games. Butker's value was underscored Saturday night, when the Packers missed a tying field goal in the final minutes of their loss to San Francisco, and again Sunday, when the Bills missed one that would have tied their game.

The Chiefs have been among the NFL's best against the pass all season, but they have been susceptible to the run. The Bills ran for 182 yards on 39 carries Sunday night, helping them dictate the tempo of the game. And given that QB Josh Allen ran for 72 yards and two scores, that doesn't bode well with the Ravens' Lamar Jackson on deck.

Isiah Pacheco touched the ball only 16 times but turned that into 111 yards and a go-ahead touchdown. He also had a battering run on first down in the final minute that allowed the Chiefs to run out the clock on the win. Pacheco dealt with a shoulder injury midway through the season but has been at his best down the stretch and into the playoffs.

One week after his effort was questioned in the Chiefs' wild-card win over the Dolphins, Hardman fumbled through the end zone, which could have come back to bite them. Can the Chiefs trust him to play mistake-free going forward?

The Chiefs played most of the way without safety Mike Edwards (concussion) and linebacker Willie Gay Jr. (neck), while LG Joe Thuney was expected to have an MRI on Monday for a pectoral injury. Rookie safety Chamarri Conner played well when Edwards went down, and Nick Allegretti did a fine job as a fill-in guard. But the Chiefs planned to use Gay to spy on Allen, who gouged them with his feet, and will likely have him in the same role against Jackson this week.

6 — The number of seasons that Mahomes has been the starter, and the number of consecutive years that he has led Kansas City to the AFC title game. The previous five were at Arrowhead Stadium while this one will take place in Baltimore.

The Chiefs have not played a road conference championship game since Jan. 23, 1994, when they lost 30-13 in Buffalo. They won two conference title games on the road before that, though, beating the Bills in 1967 and the Raiders in 1970.

Hitting the lanes for the first time in over two-months, the Barton Community College men's bowling teams turned in a fourth place and 10th place finish this past weekend at the SWIBC V and SWIBC VI held at the Plano Super Bowl in Plano, TX.

Competing as the lone two-year program, the Cougars recorded a fourth place 6,638 pin count over five individual games and 10 bakers in Saturday's SWIBC V. Returning 12-hours later Barton dropped six spots finishing 10th in Sunday's seven team game SWIBC VI with 6,302 tipped down pins.

Securing both team crowns was four-year powerhouse Wichita State University turning in scores of 7,707 and 8,254.

Directing Barton was Carter Lambeth's 21st placing in the 126-participant field. Lambeth demolished 1,027 pins over five individual games with a trio of games topping the 200-mark with rounds of 207, 227 and 225 to help finish with an average 10-frame score of 205.4.

Falling just outside the top-30 was Torrey Lindsay constructing a 31st tournament total 982. The freshman joined Lambeth as the lone Cougar surpassing the 200-point total with games of 221, 206 and 205.

Called upon off the bench, Caleb Murphy entered blazing chalking up the team's highest single game score of 250 in the first of his three tossed games.

Chris O'Connor guided the Barton JV team with a 37th finish and five game total 965 pins while Landon Wareman posted the highest single game of 230 in the first of his five bowled games.

Mixing up the lineup in Sunday's SWIBC-VI, Murphy joined the varsity team to lead the squad with a 1,368 five game 36th placing. The sophomore averaged a team best 195.4 per 10-frames exceeding 200 in four of his seven bowled games with scores of 203, 201, 215 and 204.

Lambeth slipped just outside the top-50 rolling a 51st best seven game 1,289 while Lindsay fell three spots back with a 1,248 and team top game 245.

Bowling in just two games in Saturday's tournament, Cooper Holloway steered the Cougars JV team with a 41st finish and pin count of 1,353 besting his previous day's placing by 65 spots. The sophomore also manufactured the JV teams' highest individual game of 235.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) —
Legislators in Jackson County, Missouri, voted Monday to override the
veto of Jackson County Executive Frank White and place the renewal of
a sales tax on the April ballot to help fund a new ballpark for the
Kansas City Royals.


The tax of three-eighth of a
cent, which is used under the current lease agreement for stadium
upkeep at the Truman Sports Complex, also would help pay for future
renovations to Arrowhead Stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs.


As recently as last week, it
appeared there would not be enough votes to override the veto. But
legislators Jalen Anderson and Sean Smith changed their minds after
an outpouring of public pressure, and after continued negotiations
with the teams, and the result was a 7-2 vote in favor of advancing
the proposal to the April 2 ballot.


“I am grateful that so many
of my colleagues joined me in voting the overturn,” said Jackson
County legislator DaRon McGee, who called White's decision to veto
the proposal “tone deaf" by taking away the rights of voters
to make their own decisions.


White was a five-time All-Star
for the Royals and is a member of their Hall of Fame.


“Thanks to overwhelming
support from our citizens, including business, labor, nonprofit and
other community organizations, we prevailed, and can now proceed to
do the important work ahead,” McGee said. “There is much work to
do so that the voters are fully informed before the April election. I
join my colleagues in saying we are prepared to do that work.”


Legislators initially voted
8-1 to approve ballot language for the tax, but White said in vetoing
it that “it’s not a good deal for taxpayers” because it did not
provide enough assurance of the franchises’ commitment to the
county.


The Royals and Chiefs released
a joint statement after White’s veto that said they respected his
authority but that “we will continue working with the legislators
to ensure that this ordinance is on the ballot.” The teams also
ramped up their social and traditional media campaigns for public
support, and they had support of many commerce groups and labor
unions.


“We took an important step
forward today,” the teams said in a statement Monday. “We thank
Jackson County legislators for their attention and care in this
matter. We look forward to continuing to work with them and enabling
the voters to decide on extending the longstanding partnership
between the county and our teams on April 2.”


The Royals had been weighing
competing offers from Jackson County and Clay County, which sits just
across the Missouri River, for locations for their new ballpark. They
intended to make their decision in September but pushed it back
indefinitely, and only in recent weeks have said they plan to build
in Jackson County.


They still have not decided on
a site, though. The initial plan was to build in an area known as the
East Village, but they are also considering a location closer to the
Power &amp; Light District, where there are existing shops and
restaurants.

County legislators override executive, ensuring a vote for potential KC stadium funding

The Big 12 can make an
argument as college basketball's best conference the past few years,
with two national champions in three years and multiple teams making
the NCAA Tournament each season.


Even with TCU dropping out,
the Big 12 led the way in this week's AP Top 25 with seven ranked
teams, led by No. 4 Houston and No. 7 Kansas.


“This league is brutal,”
Houston coach Kelvin Sampson said.


Kansas (15-3, 3-2) dropped
four spots in this week's poll after a road loss to West Virginia.
The Jayhawks bounced back with a five-point win over Cincinnati on
Monday night, improving to 102-16 following a loss under Bill Self
(since 2003-04)


Next up for Kansas is No. 23
Iowa State on Saturday.


The Cyclones (14-4, 3-2) moved
up a spot in this week's AP Top 25 after losing to BYU and beating
TCU last week. Iowa State plays at Big 12 co-leader Kansas State on
Wednesday before heading to Allen Fieldhouse, where the Jayhawks
needed a last-second shot to beat the Cyclones last season.


Houston (16-2, 3-2) bounced
back from consecutive losses with lopsided wins over No. 20 Texas
Tech and Central Florida last week.


The Cougars face a difficult
week with games at No. 21 BYU on Tuesday and at home against Kansas
State on Saturday. Houston leads the nation in scoring defense at
51.0 points per game and is sixth in steals at 10.6.


The Cougars' D will certainly
be tested in Provo.

The Big 12 can make an
argument as college basketball's best conference the past few years,
with two national champions in three years and multiple teams making
the NCAA Tournament each season.
This season has been no
different.
Even with TCU dropping out,
the Big 12 led the way in this week's AP Top 25 with seven ranked
teams, led by No. 4 Houston and No. 7 Kansas.
“This league is brutal,”
Houston coach Kelvin Sampson said.
Kansas (15-3, 3-2) dropped
four spots in this week's poll after a road loss to West Virginia.
The Jayhawks bounced back with a five-point win over Cincinnati on
Monday night, improving to 102-16 following a loss under Bill Self
(since 2003-04)
Next up for Kansas is No. 23
Iowa State on Saturday.
The Cyclones (14-4, 3-2) moved
up a spot in this week's AP Top 25 after losing to BYU and beating
TCU last week. Iowa State plays at Big 12 co-leader Kansas State on
Wednesday before heading to Allen Fieldhouse, where the Jayhawks
needed a last-second shot to beat the Cyclones last season.
Houston (16-2, 3-2) bounced
back from consecutive losses with lopsided wins over No. 20 Texas
Tech and Central Florida last week.
The Cougars face a difficult
week with games at No. 21 BYU on Tuesday and at home against Kansas
State on Saturday. Houston leads the nation in scoring defense at

Big 12 faces another barrage of big games this week

The Panther swim team was supposed to open 2024 with a meet in Derby on Jan. 16. Winter weather halted that event so the swimmers had to wait until Monday's home meet to bring in the New Year. Great Bend scored 287 points for fourth place out of five teams. Manhattan scored 578 points for the win, followed by Garden City with 487 points.

The 200 medley relay team of Andrew McQuade, Matthew Williams, Kasey Kennedy, and Adam Hall finished third in 2:06.19, less than three seconds behind the silver.

Kennedy placed third in the 50-yard free in 25.21 to miss the silver by half a second and miss the state consideration time by 0.63 seconds. Kennedy placed fourth in the 100-yard breast in 1:14.20, four seconds off the bronze-medal pace. Hall finished seventh in the race in 26.65. Hall also placed seventh in the 100-yard free in 1:01.49 to miss the bronze by just more than a second.

McQuade finished fifth in the 500-yard free in 7:12.74 to miss the bronze by 35 seconds. Jordan Sander followed him in 7:20.97 for sixth. Sander placed seventh in the 200-yard free in 2:32.47, 18 seconds behind the bronze. Joshua Sharpe placed 10th in 2:51.23. Williams finished seventh in the 200-yard IM in 3:04.34 to miss the bronze by 22 seconds. Kale Mermis placed eighth in 3:07.31, and AJ Thurman hit the way in 3:28.50 for 10th. Mermis placed seventh in the 100-yard back in 1:26.69, 12 seconds behind the bronze.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Johnny Furphy sent his parents back home to Australia with quite the lasting impression of their son in Allen Fieldhouse.

The freshman guard had career-highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds, hitting a key 3-pointer down the stretch, and helped No. 7 Kansas overcome a sluggish night from the rest of its starters in a 74-69 victory over Cincinnati on Monday night.

Kevin McCullar Jr. added 20 points despite struggling with his shot, KJ Adams Jr. had 11 points and Hunter Dickinson overcame some foul trouble to score 10 for the Jayhawks (16-3, 4-2), who bounced back nicely from a road loss at West Virginia.

“This was their first home game,” Furphy said of his parents, “so I was happy they could experience that. I've been telling them a lot about Allen Fieldhouse. I'm happy they got to see a win.”

The cold-shooting Bearcats (13-6, 2-4), wrapping up a stretch of six straight against ranked teams, got within 64-57 when Day Day Thomas ended their 6-plus minute field-goal drought with just over 2 1/2 minutes to play. But at the other end, Furphy hit his 3-pointer from the wing as the shot clock expired, and the Jayhawks were able to hang on from there.

“You had some good looks, some blown possessions, and you're still right there. That's the hard part to swallow,” said Cincinnati coach Will Wade, whose team had 16 turnovers and went 3 for 18 from the 3-point arc.

Dan Skillings Jr. led the Bearcats with 16 points. Leading scorer Viktor Lakhin was held to seven on 1-for-6 shooting.

The Bearcats and Jayhawks were meeting for the first time since a top-five showdown in 1996, and they were playing at Allen Fieldhouse for the first time since 1967, when Kansas exacted a bit of revenge for a home loss five years earlier.

Like so many teams unaccustomed to the Phog, Cincinnati was rattled in the opening minutes. Kansas sprinted out to a 12-point lead and Wade was forced to call timeout to keep the game from getting away from his Bearcats.

Cincinnati slowly drew even, though, and briefly took the lead before going to halftime 35-all.

“We have a resilient bunch,” Wade said. “We don't pout. We don't put our heads down.”

McCullar continued to struggle from the field, where he finished 5 for 17, and Dickinson had to sit long stretches after picking up his fourth foul with more than 10 minutes to go. But the Bearcats continued to be bitterly cold from the 3-point arc, where Simas Lukosius was 0 for 6 and nobody else was a whole lot better, and that prevented them from ever taking control.

That came back to haunt Cincinnati when the Jayhawks pulled away in the closing minutes.

“They got a goose egg other than Skillings shooting the ball from the arc, and those were all in the first half,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. “We were probably lucky on some of them, but we did a decent job defensively, and that was a big part of the game.”

Kansas retired the No. 33 jersey of Bill “Skinny” Johnson during a halftime ceremony. He was an All-American in 1933 under coach Phog Allen, and led the Jayhawks to three consecutive conference titles. Johnson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1977, three years before his death.

Kansas visits No. 23 Iowa State on Saturday.

With Baylor trying for a game-tying shot at the end, Jaelyn Glenn blocked a game-ending 3-point attempt by Dre’Una Edwards. with Travis Kelce — the tight end whose romance with Taylor Swift

Barton Softball picked 4th in Jayhawk West

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Larry Zimmer, the longtime radio voice for University of Colorado football and basketball who also called Denver Broncos games, died Saturday. He was 88.

The school announced his death before the third-ranked Colorado women’s team hosted No. 6 Southern California on Sunday. A moment of silence was held before the game.

Zimmer had been hospitalized for the last 10 days in Lakewood, Colorado. He received numerous visitors and text messages from the university and the Broncos before his death.

Zimmer spent seven decades in broadcasting since his college days at the University of Missouri. He called 486 football games at Colorado (22 bowl games) and 525 men’s basketball games. He also worked 536 preseason, regular season and postseason games with the Broncos, including four Super Bowls.

In addition, he was on the microphone for football games at the University of Michigan (51 games) and Colorado State (34).

“His voice was synonymous with our athletic program and he was most beloved by our coaches, players and fans,” Colorado athletic director Rick George said in a statement. “He is truly a part of our overall athletic history.”

Zimmer was hired in 1971 by KOA sports director Bob Martin to be the play-by-play person for Colorado football games and to serve as the color commentator for the Broncos. Zimmer also had a stint as the voice for the Denver Rockets, who were members of the American Basketball Association, and the Colorado Caribous of the North American Soccer League.

In the middle of the 2014 season, Zimmer experienced health issues and was hospitalized for five months. He returned in 2015 for what was his final season. His last home game was on his 80th birthday against Southern California, where he was honored in a pregame ceremony.

“There was only one guy in the country who sounded like him and when you heard him, you knew it was a CU or Bronco game,” said Alfred Williams, a standout at Colorado from 1987-90 who also played for the Broncos.

Born on Nov. 13, 1935, in New Orleans, Zimmer attended LSU before he transferred to Missouri and earned a degree in journalism in 1957. He broke into the business by broadcasting high school football and basketball games in Columbia, Missouri, and Lawton, Oklahoma.

Another week and more impacts on the program record book resulting from the Barton Community College track and field program competing at the Washburn Rust Buster in Topeka, Kansas.

The Cougars created four changes to the men's and women's top ten list in the indoor season opener last week and now add three more plus a meet record from week two action.

In addition to the program impacts, the Cougars chalked up nine more national qualifying performances and eleven personal or season bests in the one day meet.

Last week the men produced the eye catching performances but the second week of the season in a field of over 1000 entrants, it was the Barton women's meet to shine.

Coming away with three individual titles and a runner-up within their ten Top-10 placings, the women added seven national tickets and two program list etchings.

Freshman Sanae Hassnaoui followed her impressive collegiate debut in not only adding another event to her national trip, but winning the mile run by fourteen seconds in the 104 competitor field in a program second best time of 4:51.25.

New weight throw national qualifier Cedricka Williams also made a program impact with a 16.83m (55-02.75) mark for 8th best in history in joining reigning KJCCC Field Athlete of the Week Treneese Hamilton who met qualifying standards last week and finished 10th this week on a lesser 15.44m (50-08.00) mark.

Hamilton also has her ticket punched from last week's shot put competition as this week's event added two more Cougars to the list as Ivanilda Semedo recorded a personal best 13.25m (43-05.75) heave in placing 5th overall out of 74 competitors with Williams garnering another ticket with a personal best 12.31m (40-04.75) mark to place 12th.

Barton's two other individual titles also punched national tickets. Chloe Perryman's personal best 7.63 beat the 66-entry 60m field with Keliza Smith, who also qualified in the short track sprint event last week, bettered the 43-entry 400m participants with a 55.98 time.

Kay-Lagay Clarke, who also qualified last week in the 60m hurdles, bettered her time to 8.85 in placing 4th and additionally added the triple jump to her national list with a runner-up placing 11.56m (37-11.25) mark.

On the men's side the Cougars picked up an additional pair of qualifying tickets, to go along with a meet record and individual title in their ten Top-10 placings.

One of the highlights again came from freshman Hamza Belkhalfi in putting his name on the Barton record book for the second consecutive week. Recording a program 4th best 1000m time last week, Belkhalfi etched his name in the mile run 8th slot this week with a 4:16.23 clocking to place 8th in the 103 competitor field.

Last week's conference and national field athlete of the week Christopher Young reset his meet record in the shot put by raising the bar to 18.08m (59-04.00) for the title of the 50-man field. Fellow national qualifiers Christopher Crawford placed 3rd (15.95m, 52-04.00) with Ricardo Hayles (15.60m, 51-02.25) in sixth place.

In addition to Belkhalfi's new qualifying ticket, the Cougars also picked up its second entry in the 60m hurdles. Bryce Southerland, who qualified last week, placed 5th on Saturday with an 8.36 in the finals after clocking an 8.15 in the prelims. Southerland was joined in the 8th placing by sophomore Jeramiah Martin's season best 8.16 to book his second straight indoor national trip in the event.

The Cougars' next meet is Friday in the two-day New Mexico Team Open held in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
