The 4th ranked Barton Community College volleyball team stepped out of conference play Wednesday night hosting the varsity reserve squad from McPherson College.
The Cougars swept the Bulldogs on the evening, breaking the first set's 9th tie in closing out the opener winning 5-of-6 points for a 25-20 score before utilizing a 9-0 come-from-behind spurt in an eventual 25-22 second set victory. Barton put the wraps on its night by doubling up the Bulldogs 12-6 early on in riding out a 25-17 win capping its three-match homestand.
Improving to 12-0 on the season, Barton next heads to Sterling, Colorado, for the two-day Sheila Worley Tournament. The Cougars open play Friday at 10:30 a.m. against Laramie County Community College before taking on 13th ranked Odessa College in the 6:00 p.m. match. On Saturday, Barton hits the court at 1:00 p.m. against 10th ranked Indian Hills Community College followed by a 6:00 p.m. fellow Cougar tangle with 17th ranked Western Nebraska Community College.
Three Cougars recorded eight or more kills on the balanced .247 attack evening, Phoebe Reyes leading the way with 9 kills on a .450 efficiency. Mya Thompson recorded 8 kills on a .273 attack while Anna Wierzbicki hit .400 on the night with 8 kills and a team high tying 2 blocks.
Trailing 17-14 in the second set, the Cougars' 9-0 run was highlighted by Mina Kaneko's four service aces along with a Reyes kill. Kaneko led Barton's 13 service aces with six total on the night, to go along with, a team high 12 digs.
Setters Elena Stankovic and Maurin Reyes put up 17 and 16 assists each respectively while also combing for five aces, two from Stankovic and three from Reyes.
