MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Micha Peavy scored a career-high 26 points and Jameer Nelson Jr. hit a fadeaway 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left to lift TCU to a 75-72 win over Kansas State on Saturday. Peavy scored 17 points in the second half for TCU, including 11 in an 20-2 run to take a 10-point lead with seven minutes remaining before the Wildcats worked their way back into the tie. Emanuel Miller, TCU’s leading scorer this season, didn’t have a first-half point but finished with 10. Tylor Perry scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half to lead the Wildcats, making all 12 of his free throws.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Keshon Gilbert had 24 points and eight rebounds to lead No. 10 Iowa State past Texas Tech 82-74 on Saturday. Curtis Jones contributed 12 points for Iowa State, which has won all 15 of its home games this season. Tamin Lipsey and Milan Momcilovic each added 10 points. The Cyclones scored 28 points off of turnovers. Joe Toussaint led the Red Raiders with 16 points. Iowa State visits No. 3 Houston on Monday night with an outright conference lead on the line. The Cyclones and Cougars are currently co-leaders.

HOUSTON (AP) — L.J. Cryer scored a season-high 26 points, Jamal Shead had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 3 Houston beat Texas 82-61 for the Cougars’ third straight win. Cryer and Shead combined to score 23 first half points on 8-of-15 shooting as Houston built a 40-27 halftime lead. Cryer was 6 of 9 on 3-pointers. Houston, which has won 19 straight home games, was a No. 1 seed and the third overall team in the NCAA Tournament selection committee’s reveal of the potential top 16 teams earlier Saturday. Dylan Disu had 16 points and seven rebounds and Chendall Weaver added 11 points for Texas.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Dan Skillings Jr. had 15 points and eight rebounds, Simas Lukosius made a key layup with 11 seconds left and Cincinnati defeated UCF 76-74. Cincinnati led by 14 points early in the second half before the Knights rallied and got within 61-59 with a little less than five minutes left and eventually tied it on Darius Johnson’s three-point play with 1:54 remaining. A UCF turnover gave Cincinnati possession with 38 seconds left with a one-point lead. Lukosius then made a layup for a three-point lead with 11 seconds remaining. Skillings missed two free throws with five seconds left and, up by three, the Bearcats fouled UCF’s Marchelus Avery. He made the first free throw, missed the second intentionally and despite gathering the rebound couldn’t get off a shot as time expired.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Freshman Ja’Kobe Walter scored 23 points to lead No. 12 Baylor over West Virginia 94-81. Six Baylor players scored in double figures. Jayden Nunn added 20 points for the Bears. Nunn led a second-half outside shooting barrage after the Bears dominated from inside in the first half. The Bears led by 22 points in the second half and have won five of their last six. RaeQuan Battle led West Virginia with 25 points and Jesse Edwards added 21. The Mountaineers have lost a season-high four straight and fell into a last-place tie in the Big 12 with Oklahoma State.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Freshman Jamyron Keller scored 22 points in his first start to help Oklahoma State beat No. 19 BYU 93-83 on Saturday. Brandon Garrison added 21 points and Quion Williams had 15 for the Cowboys (11-14, 3-9 Big 12), who shot 50% from 3-point range (11 of 22) while limiting their opponent to 8-of-35 shooting from beyond the arc (22.9%). Foussey Traore scored 17 points and Trevin Knell had 16 to lead BYU (18-7, 6-6), which came into the game leading the nation in made 3-pointers.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Jaelyn Glenn’s layup with 2 seconds left lifted No. 7 Kansas State to a 60-58 victory over UCF Saturday afternoon. Glenn caught a three-quarter court pass from Serena Sundell after UCF tied it. Gregory led Kansas State (22-4, 11-3 Big 12) with 19 points. Eliza Maupin had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Sundell and Zyanna Walker had 10 points each. UCF (12-12, 3-11 Big 12) was led by Kaitlin Peterson with 26 points. Mya Burns added 10 points.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Stephen Curry was on a roll — and it was barely enough to beat Sabrina Ionescu. And fittingly, he won by three. The Golden State star and NBA’s all-time 3-point king beat Ionescu 29-26 in the Steph vs. Sabrina competition at All-Star Saturday night, the first such him-vs.-her event of its kind at the league’s weekend showcase.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Mac McClung has won his second straight NBA Slam Dunk Contest by grabbing the ball out of Shaquille O’Neal’s hands and leaping over him to draw five perfect scores on his final attempt. McClung finished with 98.8 points on his final two dunks, one point ahead of Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown. McClung became the sixth player to win the contest twice and the first to do it in back-to-back seasons since Zach LaVine in 2015 and 2016. Earlier on All-Star Saturday night in Indianapolis, Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard became the eighth player to win a second 3-point contest and the first to do it in consecutive years since Jason Kapono in 2007 and 2008. Team Pacers won the skills challenge in a tiebreaker.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — The Hall of Fame basketball coach Lefty Driesell has died. His family says Driesell died Saturday at his home in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Driesell’s folksy drawl belied a fiery on-court demeanor. He rebuilt struggling programs and won 786 games over parts of five decades. He was the first to win more than 100 games at four Division I schools. Driesell put Maryland on college basketball’s map and was the coach there when Len Bias fatally overdosed. He also coached at Davidson, James Madison and Georgia State. Charles “Lefty” Driesell was 92.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Patrick Cantlay still has the lead in the Genesis Invitational. It's just not as large as he might have hoped. Cantlay made a soft bogey on the second-easiest hole at Riviera. He shot a 70 and his lead is down to two shots over Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris. He'll play the final round with Schauffele, his best friend in golf. They have been partners 23 times in various team events. They have been paired together 20 times on the PGA Tour. And they have played close to 100 practice rounds. At stake is $4 million to the winner.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City was at its highest moment of community pride, celebrating a Super Bowl win, when it experienced one of 21st-century American culture’s most traumatic events — a public mass shooting. By the time it was over, one woman was dead and nearly two dozen other Chiefs fans were wounded. Police now blame a dispute between several people. On Friday, two juveniles were charged with gun-related and resisting arrest charges. Additional charges are expected in Wednesday's post-rally shooting. While it lasted only moments, it has left a knocked-back community struggling to make sense of how something so positive could turn so quickly into something so terrifying and sad.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — After a dismal showing in time trials for Sunday’s season-opening Daytona 500, the Toyota camp roared back and swept the two 150-mile qualifying races that set the field for “The Great American Race.” The wins by Tyler Reddick and Christopher Bell marked the first sweep of the Daytona qualifying races for Toyota since 2014 and have given the automaker hope of a fourth Daytona 500 win. Joey Logano of Team Penske starts on the pole in the first time a Roger Penske car will lead the field to green at the Daytona 500. Rain is expected Sunday and could disrupt the event.

Sunday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

The Class 5A wrestling super-regional in Arkansas City Friday and Saturday may have been the toughest in the state. The 18-team field included eight of the top teams in the classification, including top-ranked Goddard and seventh-ranked Great Bend. Those two teams finished atop the regional. Goddard scored 207.5 points for the title and Great Bend edged fourth-ranked Andover 163.5-161.5 for second. Junior Jace Schartz won a regional title and 10 Panthers qualified for next week's state tournament.

Schartz's road to the title was not an easy one. He opened with a pair of decisions, including a 13-7 win against fourth-ranked Elijah Means of Bishop Carroll to reach the finals. There, he needed an ultimate tie break to get by top-ranked Kade Smith of Hutchinson. Schartz picked up a late escape point to force overtime, then hung on from the top position to win 3-2.

"I got my shot," Schartz said. "I was thinking fireman's, fireman's but he knew it was coming. He had the long arm brace on so I couldn't grip his elbow. I thought, forget it, we're going to stop shooting and take it to double-overtime."

In the tie break, Smith took the down position and just needed an escape to advance. Neither wrestler had been able to ride the other for more than 10 seconds.

"You have to stay tight-waist. I wasn't really hard on the tight waist, and when it came to the third overtime, I knew we had to ride tight tight waist. You've got to be mean with the tight waist. You want to make it where they can't breathe."

Two of the top seeds in the other half of the bracket, including third-ranked Josh Berlin of Maize South, were knocked out before the finals. Schartz was able to pin Goddard junior Eastyn Vieyra for the title. He takes a 35-7 record to state.

Senior Kaiden Hoffman dropped to No. 6 at 132 pounds heading into a tough bracket but still pulled out a third-place finish to qualify. He pinned his first opponent and won a 7-5 decision over Goddard to reach the semifinals Friday evening. Top-ranked Luke Potter of Andover was able to defeat Hoffman 7-4 on his way to the title. Hoffman pinned his final two opponents, including fourth-ranked Julian Glover of Salina Central in the consolation finals. Hoffman takes a 32-8 record to Park City.

Third-ranked Cooper Liles battled through a tough 150-pound bracket for third place. The senior pinned his first two opponents before getting pinned by second-ranked Brady Duling of Bishop Carroll in the semifinals. Liles needed a total of 78 seconds to pin his final two opponents, including fifth-ranked Abram Owings of Salina Central in the consolation finals. Liles heads to state with a 26-3 record.

Fourth-ranked sophomore Trenton Kern had to contend with some top competition for third place at 190 pounds. After a bye, Kern lost an 8-7 to fifth-ranked Steel Shomacher in the quarters. Top-ranked Omari Elias of Kapaun awaited the winner. Kern dominated his way through the back side with a tech fall, a quick pin, and a forfeit against third-ranked Tate Hutchinson of Andover on the consolation semis. Kern avenged the earlier loss by pinning Schomaker for third place. He takes a 30-6 record to Hartman Arena.

Sixth-ranked Aiden Davidson also navigated his way through a tough bracket for third at 165 pounds. The junior opened with a 6-0 decision before getting pinned by Andover. Davidson advanced to the consolation finals with a pin and two decisions on the back side. He won a 6-1 decision over fifth-ranked Johnny Rigler for third place. Davidson heads to state with a 23-6 record.

Hayden Kelly finished third at 138 pounds to punch his ticket to Hartman Arena. The sophomore opened with a 5-4 decision against Hutchinson before getting tech-falled by second-ranked and eventual champion Adam Maki of Andover in round two. Kelly won four-straight decisions on the back side to capture third, including a 2-1 thriller against sixth-ranked Nate Barron of Newton in the consolation finals. Kelly takes a 26-11 record to state.

Fifth-ranked Triston Tomlinson finished fourth to qualify for state at 120 pounds. After a bye, he was pinned by fourth-ranked Conner Landers of Bishop Carroll. Tomlinson pinned his next two opponents in short order to secure a spot at state. He advanced to the consolation finals with a forfeit win, then lost a 6-5 sudden-victory match to Ark City junior Carlos Leyva. Tomlinson takes a 23-16 record to state.

Senior Matthew Johnson dropped out of the rankings at 215 pounds heading into regionals but qualified for state with a fifth-place finish Saturday. He pinned his first two opponents to reach the semifinals opposite second-ranked Dai'Mont Mucker of Valley Center. Mucker won 9-3 and pinned his opponent in the finals. With a spot at state secured, Johnson lost a 7-6 decision to fourth-ranked Marcel Gonzalez of Newton. Johnson pinned his Eisenhower opponent for fifth to improve his record to 28-12.

Junior Michael Montoya placed seventh at 165 pounds to earn a spot at state. He pinned his first opponent before being tech-falled by fifth-ranked Tristen Ring of Andover in round two. Montoya won a 4-2 decision against Kapaun to secure a spot at state, lost a decision to Bishop Carroll, then defeated his Ark City opponent 5-0 in the seventh-place match. Montoya heads to Park City with a 24-16 record.

Freshman Hayden Liles grabbed the eighth-place and final qualifying spot at 126 pounds. He pinned his first opponent only to get pinned by second-ranked Jase Adams of Salina Central. Liles pinned his next opponent to secure a spot at state. He lost his final two matches to drop to eighth with a 22-15 overall record.

Brody Schoebelen came up a win shy of state at 285 pounds. He was upset in round one by the eventual sixth-place finisher from Salina Central. Schnoebelen stayed alive with a pin against Topeka West but bowed out a round early with a loss to Salina South.

Alexis Reyes lost both of his matches at 106 pounds in a bracket that included two of the top-three wrestlers. Ambrose Kramer went 0-2 in a 113-pound bracket that featured four ranked wrestlers.

This year's Class 5A and 6A boys' and girls' state wrestling championships will be held at Park City's Hartman Arena Feb. 22-24.

The senior pinned his first two opponents before getting pinned by second-ranked Brady Duling of Bishop Carroll in the semifinals. Liles needed a total of 78 seconds to pin his final two opponents, including fifth-ranked Abram Owings of Salina Central in the consolation finals. Liles heads to state with a 26-3 record.Fourth-ranked sophomore Trenton Kern had to contend with some top competition for third place at 190 pounds. After a bye, Kern lost an 8-7 to fifth-ranked Steel Shomacher in the quarters. Top-ranked Omari Elias of Kapaun awaited the winner. Kern dominated his way through the back side with a tech fall, a quick pin, and a forfeit against third-ranked Tate Hutchinson of Andover on the consolation semis. Kern avenged the earlier loss by pinning Schomaker for third place. He takes a 30-6 record to Hartman Arena.Sixth-ranked Aiden Davidson also navigated his way through a tough bracket for third at 165 pounds. With a spot at state secured, Johnson lost a 7-6 decision to fourth-ranked Marcel Gonzalez of Newton. Johnson pinned his Eisenhower opponent for fifth to improve his record to 28-12.Junior Michael Montoya placed seventh at 165 pounds to earn a spot at state. He pinned his first opponent before being tech-falled by fifth-ranked Tristen Ring of Andover in round two. Montoya won a 4-2 decision against Kapaun to secure a spot at state, lost a decision to Bishop Carroll, then defeated his Ark City opponent 5-0 in the seventh-place match. Montoya heads to Park City with a 24-16 record.Freshman Hayden Liles grabbed the eighth-place and final qualifying spot at 126 pounds. He pinned his first opponent only to get pinned by second-ranked Jase Adams of Salina Central. Liles pinned his next opponent to secure a spot at state. He lost his final two matches to drop to eighth with a 22-15 overall record.Brody Schoebelen came up a win shy of state at 285 pounds. He was upset in round one by the eventual sixth-place finisher from Salina Central. Schnoebelen stayed alive with a pin against Topeka West but bowed out a round early with a loss to Salina South.Alexis Reyes lost both of his matches at 106 pounds in a bracket that included two of the top-three wrestlers. Ambrose Kramer went 0-2 in a 113-pound bracket that featured four ranked wrestlers.This year's Class 5A and 6A boys' and girls' state wrestling championships will be held at Park City's Hartman Arena Feb. 22-24.

Schartz wins regional title; 10 Panther wrestlers head to state

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson delivered his usual dominant performance and Kevin McCullar pushed Kansas over the top.

Dickinson had 20 points and 16 rebounds, McCullar made key contributions in his return from a knee injury, and the sixth-ranked Jayhawks rallied to beat No. 25 Oklahoma 67-57 on Saturday.

McCullar was back after missing two games, including a 79-50 loss to Texas Tech on Monday. The Big 12's leading scorer finished with 10 points and eight rebounds in 35 minutes.

“I thought he was definitely out of sorts, out of rhythm,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “But he played within himself. We don’t win the game unless he plays.”

Johnny Furphy had 15 points, nine rebounds and three steals and Dajuan Harris had 11 points, seven assists and no turnovers for the Jayhawks (20-6, 8-5 Big 12).

Dickinson, a 7-foot-2 center, ranks second in the Big 12 in scoring and first in rebounding. He had 24 points and 14 rebounds in the first matchup between the teams — a 78-66 win for Kansas at home on Jan. 13.

This time, he made 9 of 16 field goals and had four assists.

“Hunter was Hunter," Oklahoma coach Porter Moser said. "He’s just a load.”

Kansas now has won the last seven meetings with Oklahoma.

Jalon Moore had 17 points and Javian McCollum added 15 for the Sooners (18-8, 6-7). Otega Oweh, the team's No. 2 scorer with 12.3 points per game, finished with three points on 1-for-7 shooting.

Oklahoma was missing two of its top reserves. John Hugley IV, a 6-foot-10, 275-pound forward/center, was out with a knee injury, while Rivaldo Soares, a 6-6 guard, was out with a left ankle injury.

Kansas trailed for much of the game but took a 49-46 lead on a 3-pointer by McCullar with about nine minutes remaining. The Jayhawks pushed their lead to 60-50 on a layup by Harris and controlled the game from there.

The crowd was energetic from the start. Though the home fans were loud, a significant group of Kansas fans made the trip and were heard from when the Jayhawks made big plays.

A 3-pointer by McCollum gave Oklahoma a 23-16 lead in the first half, and another 3 by McCollum put the Sooners up 28-18. Oklahoma pushed the lead to 11 late in the half. Kansas surged, but Oklahoma still led 34-29 at halftime behind 13 points from Moore.

Oklahoma made just 4 of 22 field goals, including 1 of 11 3-pointers, in the second half. Self said the team changed its ball screen coverage at halftime, and the players executed it well.

“We made a pretty significant change, and it’s really not that subtle," he said. “It’s pretty significant. And the guys didn’t screw it up.”

Even with that, the Sooners still had a chance. But they were outrebounded 22-13 in the second half.

“We felt if we took care of the ball, we rebounded and he knocked down a couple of shots in the second half, it’s a different game," Moser said.

Kansas: The Jayhawks needed this one after the embarrassing loss to Texas Tech. They locked the Sooners down and outrebounded them 40-29. Self said the team isn't in the position it hoped to be in, but they still are in a good spot heading down the stretch.

Oklahoma: It would have been a great win for the Sooners, but they went cold, as they have at times this season. Their scrappiness and energy couldn't overcome Kansas' talent or their lack of depth.

No. 6 Kansas tops No. 25 Oklahoma 67-57

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Micha Peavy scored a career-high 26 points and Jameer Nelson Jr. hit a fadeaway 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left to lift TCU to a 75-72 win over Kansas State on Saturday.

Nelson was called for a foul as Kansas State (15-10, 5-7 Big 12) was trying to inbound the ball with 15.6 seconds left. That allowed the Wildcats to tie the game on two Cam Carter free throws. Nelson redeemed himself with a heavily contested shot and the Wildcats' length-of-the-court heave bounced off the backboard.

Peavy scored 17 points in the second half for TCU (18-7, 7-5), including 11 in an 20-2 run to take a 10-point lead with seven minutes remaining before the Wildcats worked their way back into the tie on Carter's free throws.

Emanuel Miller, TCU's leading scorer this season, didn't have a first-half point but finished with 10.

Tylor Perry scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half to lead the Wildcats, making all 12 of his free throws, 10 in the second half. David N'Guessan added 12 points and Arthur Kaluma 11. Kansas State outshot TCU at 48% but made just 1 of 15 from the arc with the Horned Frogs doubling up Kansas State on the offensive boards 14-7 for 20 second-chance points.

The Wildcats finished the first half on a 12-5 run for a 28-24 lead.

Teams combined for 59 free throws. TCU was 21 of 30 and Kansas State 25 of 29.

Treneese Hamilton and Sanae Hassnaoui of the 3rd ranked Barton Community College track and field program have been named the KJCCC's Week Five Women's Field and Track Athletes of the Week following performances this past weekend at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Hamilton not only competed in a pair of events but posted personal bests in each while bettering her program top ten standing to earn her second KJCCC honor of the season.

Taking over the top spot on the shot put national leaderboard, Hamilton improved her program 6th spot standing with a 15.33m (50-03.50) mark and held steady at the second best national weight throw distance in an improved 17.01m (55-9-75) mark to move up a spot to 7th on the program top ten list.

Breaking the mile run program record and posting the NJCAA's second fastest time earned Hassnaoui her first KJCCC honor despite earning the national distinction in week two of the season.

The freshman continued her assault against times posted by the best of the best in program history, this past week clocking a 4:47.99 stoppage in just her second attempt of the event in taking over the top spot.

Hassnaoui's time broke a 31-year program record held by Janice Turner's 1993 best time of 4:49.62 set during her NJCAA Championship title run and is second all-time on the NJCAA performance list.

Hassnaoui also has the program's 6th best 800m time of 2:10.75 to sit third nationally and 6th on the program 1000m chart clocking of 2:56.76 to currently ranked 2nd best this season.

Barton women sweep conference track and field's week five awards

The Kansas Wesleyan basketball teams will return to Salina on Saturday night in search of big bounce-back wins over the Moundbuilders of Southwestern

WBB: Kansas Wesleyan (13-11, 11-7) vs. SW College (0-23, 0-19)

It has been all KWU of late against Southwestern, the Coyotes winning the last 11 games. They defeated the Moundbuilders 81-68 in the first meeting January 3 in Winfield and have a 24-17 lead in the series since January 2006.

The Moundbuilders entered the week seeking their first victory of the season. They lost to Bethel 81-54 Saturday in North Newton and 85-72 to Oklahoma&nbsp;Wesleyan&nbsp;last Wednesday in Winfield.

Southwestern averages 57 points and allows 79. The Moundbuilders are shooting 32 percent overall, 25.7 percent from long distance, are being outrebounded by 8.1 per game and average 20 turnovers. 

Senior forward Christy Wiebe leads the team in scoring (11.2 points) and rebounding (8.7). Freshman guard Kennedy Ford is next on the scoring list (9.4). Sophomore guard Macey Pond had 18 points in the first game against KWU.

Cevin Clark had 22 points, Mason Thiessen 21, and Jarvin Jennings 19 in the first game against KWU. Southwestern trailed 57-46 at halftime but made it close the second half.

Clark, a senior guard, leads the NAIA in scoring with a 27.1 average while shooting 48.4 percent from the field, 37.4 percent from long distance, and 85.4 percent from the foul line. He scored 19 against OKWU, 29 against Bethel and has tallied 30 or more seven times this season. Junior guard Justin DeMaria averages 12.5 points and junior guard Andrew O'Brien 10.4. The Moundbuilders average 89.5 points and outrebound their opponents by 12 per game.

The Barton Community College softball team split its Friday contests at Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa by taking the opener 9-2 but dropping the finale in nine innings 12-11.

The Cougars led throughout game one by scoring three in the third and putting the game out of reach with a 5-run seventh frame while holding the Mavericks to just five hits.

With both teams playing through mid-30 degree temperatures and sustained 15mph north winds, game two was a seesaw affair including a combined six runs in the seventh and three in the ninth as NOC-Tonkawa salvaged the doubleheader.

Now 2-4 on the year, Barton continues the travel south down I-35 for a Saturday 1:00 p.m. twin bill at Northern Oklahoma College-Enid.

Barton pounded out a combined 29 hits on the day led by Lani Dryden's 6-of-7 out of the No. 9 hole of the lineup and Chloe Enslinger's 6-of-10 with four runs batted in. Ally Lawrence also contributed four RBI including her first collegiate double driving in a pair getting the Cougars out front 3-0 in game one.

expects to be a nine-race schedule this season. He’s co-owner now
of Legacy Motor Club and, in his second season, switched the team
from Chevrolet to Toyota. But the Toyota’s lacked speed in
Wednesday night time trials and Johnson failed to earn a guaranteed
spot in what will be his 21st Daytona 500. It meant that he had to
beat J.J. Yeley in the first of two qualifying races Thursday night
at Daytona International Speedway.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) —
Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says he will retire when his
current term ends in January 2029. Speaking at a spring training news
conference, Manfred noted he will be 70 years old and been
commissioner for 14 years when his term ends on Jan. 25, 2029. The
65-year-old succeeded Bud Selig in January 2015 and was given a
five-year term. Owners voted in November 2018 to offer Manfred a new
deal through the 2024 season, then voted last July to approve his
latest term.

CARSON, Calif. (AP)
— U.S. women’s national team captain Lindsey Horan apologized
Thursday for recent comments in which she said American soccer fans
“aren’t smart” and they “don’t know the game.” Speaking
on a conference call with reporters ahead of the first CONCACAF
Women’s Gold Cup, Horan said her remarks were “poorly expressed.”
Horan said she had reflected on the remarks and the reaction to them.
In addition to apologizing, Horan emphasized the appreciation both
she and the rest of the team have for the fans.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Addy Brown and Audi Crooks each scored 20 points as Iowa State knocked off No. 7 Kansas State 96-93 in double overtime on Wednesday night.

The Cyclones (14-9, 8-5 Big 12) made 10 straight free throws in the final 36 seconds of the second overtime period, including Brown's four makes.

“You can't get knocked down,” Brown said. “We didn't get knocked down tonight. We went four rounds.”

Ayoka Lee and Serena Sundell both scored 20 points for Kansas State (21-4, 10-3).

The contest featured 13 lead changes, which ended when Hannah Belanger's two free throws gave Iowa State an 88-87 lead with 35.3 second remaining in the second overtime. Brown added two with 19 seconds left.

“We needed this,” Crooks said. “It's a nice little notch under our belt. Just some reassurance that the work we're doing, our preparation, isn't for nothing.”

There were seven lead changes in the final seven minutes of regulation, before the score was deadlocked at 70 with 52 seconds remaining.

Brown's two free throws pulled Iowa State even, 72-72, with 10.6 seconds remaining in regulation.

Lee forced the second overtime with a hook shot at the buzzer to make it 80-80.

“I thought our fight at the end of the game was good,” Kansas State coach Jeff Mittie said. “I thought we did a decent job of extending that game. They just didn't miss any free throws.”

“We all hit some big ones down the stretch,” Crooks said. "We practice them, so coach (Bill) Fennelly says ‘We’re going to take time out for this, so you better get to the hoop and get to the line.'"

Lee, a 6-foot-6 All-American, returned to the Kansas State lineup after missing six games following ankle surgery.

“You could see the rust on her early,” Mittie said. “She's not had a lot of practice time, either. We had to wait until it healed. I kept asking her if she was okay to keep going, because the plan wasn't to play her that amount.”

Mittie expected to use Lee 20-25 minutes. She played 33.

Despite Lee's return, the Cyclones jumped to an early lead.

Belanger, Kelsey Joens and Nyamer Diew each hit 3-pointers as Iowa State put together a 12-0 run and built a 19-8 lead. The margin grew to 39-26 in the second quarter.

The Cyclones had lost four of their previous five games.

“We've been wobbling here a little bit, struggling on the road,” Fennelly said. “You're just looking for something positive. When the season is over, we'll look back and go ‘Did this turn the season, did it really matter?’”

Kansas State began Wednesday a game behind No. 23 Oklahoma in the Big 12 standings. The Sooners improved to 12-1 in league with an 84-73 win over No. 21 Baylor on Wednesday, putting the Wildcats two games back in the conference title chase.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.
(AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl celebration has become
the latest backdrop for a mass shooting as gunfire sent fans
scrambling for cover and left 21 people wounded and one woman dead.
At least eight children are among those who were shot. Wednesday’s
shooting outside the city's historic Union Station happened despite
the presence of more than 800 police officers on hand for the parade.
Police say three people were taken into custody and firearms were
recovered. But no details have been given about those who were
detained or possible motive.

among those shot. Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said he was with
coach Andy Reid and other coaches and staff members at the time of
the shooting. Burkholder said the team was on buses returning to
Arrowhead Stadium.

received a contract extension less than a week after earning his
fourth Super Bowl ring. The Chiefs announced Spagnuolo’s extension
on X, formerly known as Twitter, before the parade celebrating their
latest Super Bowl title. The announcement didn’t reveal the terms
of the deal. Kansas City’s 25-22 overtime victory over the San
Francisco 49ers on Sunday made Spagnuolo the first coordinator on
either side of the ball to win four Super Bowl titles. He already was
the first coordinator to win a Super Bowl with two different
franchises. He was the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator
during their 2007 Super Bowl championship season.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce says he went too far when
he bumped into coach Andy Reid and screamed at him during the Super
Bowl. Kelce addressed the situation on New Heights, his podcast with
his brother, longtime Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce. During
the second quarter of the game on Sunday, Kansas City quarterback
Patrick Mahomes completed a long pass to Mecole Hardman and Reid took
Kelce out of the game for the next play. The play resulted in a
fumble by Isiah Pacheco that San Francisco recovered, setting Travis
Kelce off. Jason Kelce says his brother “crossed a line.”

SANTA CLARA, Calif.
(AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have fired defensive coordinator
Steve Wilks three days after losing the Super Bowl to the Kansas City
Chiefs. Coach Kyle Shanahan announced the decision to move on after
one season with Wilks in charge of the defense. Shanahan called it a
“really tough decision” but says he wants to find a coordinator
who was a better scheme fit for the talent on San Francisco’s
defense. The Niners struggled on defense in the playoffs and allowed
four straight scoring drives to end their Super Bowl loss against
Kansas City.

Addy Brown and Audi Crooks each scored 20 points as Iowa State
knocked off No. 7 Kansas State 96-93 in double overtime on Wednesday
night. The Cyclones made 10 straight free throws in the final 36
seconds of the second overtime, including Brown’s four makes. Ayoka
Lee and Serena Sundell both scored 20 points for Kansas State. The
contest featured 13 lead changes.

FLORENCE, S.C. (AP)
— Long before Iowa star Caitlin Clark hit her first long-range
three, Pearl Moore set a scoring standard for women’s basketball
that has stood for 45 years. At tiny Francis Marion college, Moore
piled up 4,061 points from 1975 to 1979. It remains the overall
record in women's college basketball. It is unlikely to fall this
season even if Clark and the Hawkeyes make a deep postseason run.
Moore says she enjoys watching Clark and is happy she is about to
become the all-time scorer in records kept by the NCAA. Moore's
record came before the NCAA took over women's basketball.
